okay what i meant when i said that even the copious amounts of blood didn't satiate me in particular is that the dead wife/nemesis thing was never something i was eager to see explored, just because i think it's something a lot of male characters get? to go through? the ooh i'm so tortured someone took something from me and now i can't help but turn into a monster while i'm on this quest for revenge and being smothered by grief ough i might kill them even or others in gruesome ways and then realize i'm still just as empty
because, i think men often feel the role they must take on as a man or as a father (especially the latter) is a burden, a huge one, where they aren't allowed to sit back or let go or forgive to their own and everyone else's detriment.. and i understand why there is demand for the same type of stories or story elements or arcs, and why they work, and this same overall theme can be present in a story where it's dealt with in an interesting way or where there's love and care involved in the writing process and the characters don't feel like "man pain machine #48" and "generic sensitive character who will cradle mr. man pain's bloody face in their hands (when we want to end this arc and show how good and lovable he actually is)"....
idk i'm just saying it's not even a specific problem i have with male characters that avenge their families or seem like they're defined by anger or by a traumatic event, i do think it can be written lazily and that we've seen it so many times it's a bit worn-out now, but i wouldn't be quick to generalize. it's just that, since we've seen this before (and that's partly why they poked a bit of fun at themselves when in rickmurai jack, rick's dead wife backstory was revealed).. to me it's one of the least interesting aspects of rick? and yet it's clearly important to the writers and they felt they had to tackle this part of his character, really emphasize his unfinished business, or treat it like something that must have a conclusion
for me though, rick's brand of fucked up and evil wasn't compelling because something deeply fucked up happened to him and there's a lot to deal with there and that's cool, it was more compelling to me (iirc) Before knowing much about his past. tbh. i recognized him already, he felt real, his worst side was familiar because a man doesn't need a whole event to become controlling and cruel when dealing with his family... social norms and umm systems sort of already operate within the framework of the patriarchy, i think it's built into our collective ideas of society, concepts of gender and family and the rules those come with.. i liked that about rick, that why he was an asshole wasn't detailed, there was no easy explanation for the way that he was, he just was. and every time they chose to drive home that rick's defined by losing his original family to his own alternate self and that he was still chasing this one guy, it was like, well i thought there were so many other components as well to why he turned out to be who he is. i liked it more when it was mundane, because that's what i see around me, that abuse is rather mundane. and i'm much more interested in the harm he's directly inflicted on his current family and how his past might affect his current life, what might haunt him. so i guess i never wanted prime to be taken care of, each week i find myself thinking that i just want it to be rick and morty and their messed up little relationship up close and personal again

Unpopular opinion but I like that they didn’t give Lloyd a villain arc. I would’ve been down for it but I support the final decision. It’s more real, more humanizing. Sure, he could’ve snapped and taken over the world, but that not Lloyd. He’s been fighting to evade that destiny since s1.
He was the son of the dark lord, he was abandoned by his mother and left at an evil orphanage, where he was an outcast. He was pushed aside again, bullied, he sought Allie’s and they betrayed him, each more painful than the last. Then he finds out that he has to fight his father, and he does it, and he wins.
He was thought to be destined to destroy the world back in s3 (the whole “Golden Master” shabang), and even back then his friends didn’t believe he was capable of that, because he’s overcome too much to fall that far. Because he’s grown so much, that’s not who he is, nor who he ever was. Even back when he was a primary antagonist, he was just a kid, overwhelmingly hurt and abandoned again and again.
He was repeatedly held as the most powerful elemental master (and just person) in s4, but that never manifested itself in greed or selfishness. When others desired his destiny in s5 is when he learned to let go of the notion that every battle had to be his, that he can rely on and trust his loved ones. When he was formally named the ninja’s master in s7, he got caught up in the fear of what he could do wrong before he realized that he needed to trust himself and his friends. When he thought said friends were dead and he was powerless in s9 it broke him, but not to the point of rage or greed or desperation, but to feeling aimless. Without the family he’s found himself, what does he have left? Nothing to fight for, no one to fight with. This is the pattern we see throughout the following seasons. There’s no greed or desperation, he’s just a kid trying to keep his family whole and make the world a safer place. He’s sick of losing people, to death or to darkness. He’s no longer afraid of loss, he’s too acquainted with it for that dread to be anything more, but he’s terrified of being the reason, of losing himself.
Lloyd has been angry and tired and distraught and selfish, but he keeps himself anchored in his family. After all he’s learned, endured, and conquered, the only thing he has left to fear is himself, and he’s not about to lose that fight, not after all this time.

not to shill for tumblr or be a mobile user on main but i do just wanna point out i think the response to the dashboard clown thing is a little disproportionate, all things considered
like if you just dont like the show thats fine but the way some of these posts are worded very weirdly and acting like its somehow way worse than.....literally any of the other ads? like yea tumblr is a company and not your friend, netflix is unethical and sucks. but like. are we pretending tumblr hasnt had ads for like. horrible fad diets and the fucking trump coin and god knows what else but like this really isnt worse than like. the fact that ppl with strobing triggers are constantly endangered by the ads on this site.
and maybe its super bad on desktop or something but so far this ad campaign has actually been one of the less obtrusive ones vs their other ads, imo. I dont think ive really seen them in between the posts on my dashboard? (hard to tell bc I try to automatically ignore those anyway) but like it feels like most of this ad campaign has been. a little fictional character at the top of the dashboard. and like. a separate dashboard "tab".....that i dont have to look at, and i dont. and its fine. i barely even noticed it. i probably wouldnt have thought twice about it if everyone hadnt started complaining about it. if tumblr wants to do more ads that are just dashboard tabs that I dont actually have to look at and arent interrupting my main dash i think im fine with that actually. like. obviously no advertisements are better than ads but like i dont have a particular problem with the structure or honestly even the content of this ad. its for a show that i might be intrigued to watch honestly. but its also not being targeted to me personally based on data harvesting its just blanket targeting to everyone.
again, id prefer no ads, but if we're going have them: i would actually prefer it be for things i might be interested in, but without the data harvesting to do it. if i HAVE to see ads, this is a way that i dont mind as much.
