Kyoto Higashiyama Hanatōro

Early — Mid-March

Hanatōro (花灯路) is a 10-day long illumination that takes place in Kyoto’s Higashiyama in March and Arashiyama in December. The event, which translates as “Flower and Light Road”, sees thousands of small lanterns displayed on the roadside and around the local temples, which often extend their opening times for the light up. The illuminations start at 6:00pm and last until 9:30pm.

Hi. Hope you are well. Was Higashiyama Hanatoro cancelled this year? I haven't seen any videos or photos at all. Also did Gion Higashi not take part in Heian Jingu Reitaisai Hono Buyo? I've only seen videos of Gion Kobu, Pontocho and Miyagawacho from this event but not Gion HIgashi. Thank you :)

Yes, there was no Higashiyama Hanatoro this year. Supposedly Gion Higashi took part in Reitaisai festival, but I haven't seen any pictures either ^^;

Yasaka Lighttrails 八坂レザービーム by Patrick Vierthaler Via Flickr: A classic motive in the historic preserved area around Kiyomizu-temple and Yasaka-jinja. The pagoda is known as "Yasaka Pagoda", but actually is part of a temple called Houkan-ji 法観寺. Once in a year - a few weeks before the cherry blossom season kicks in - the pagoda and its surrounding are lit up for two weeks, with lots of lanterns on the street. 東山花灯路にて

Festivals in Japanese culture

Note: I picked specifically Winter festivals as I found them the most interesting.

The Sapporo snow festival revolves around snow sculptures which can get as tall as buildings. It started in 1950 and is still on going. At night the sculptures are illuminated. Otaru lanterns is an event near the festival place, lanterns are placed in snow which makes it glow. 

The Chichibu Night Festival. Every year on the 2nd and 3rd of December. Chichibu Night Festival is considered one of Japan’s top three festivals to feature floats. Its floats are ornately decorated with lanterns, tapestries and gilded wood carvings and are accompanied by drum and flute music. The floats are multiple tons heavy. These floats are pulled to the city hall where they start the fireworks. You can buy multiple festival foods. The festival ends at 10 pm so everyone can catch the latest train back to Tokyo. 

Hanatoro, a light festival in Kyoto. Lanterns along the streets and multiple shows all thru out the city. Different Districts hold it in different months, Higashiyama District of Kyoto in March and the Arashiyama district of Kyoto in December. During the March Hanatoro the streets of Kyoto’s historic Higashiyama District are lined by more than 2400 lanterns that stretch from Shorenin all the way to Kiyomizudera.

Hibiki gives a slight laugh. “Yeah, that was really interesting. I’ve been to the snow festival in Sapporo, my parents were from Kitohiroshima so I remember it from when I was younger. It’s gorgeous. The others are definitely on my bucket list.”

Starting from the top is Kikutsuru-san, Kikumaru-san, Kikune-san, and then Kikushino-san. They all look very beautiful!
