An uninspired walk in uninspiring weather.

Today I nearly had to force myself to go outside. After yesterday's Foehn-storm it was not really advisable to go exploring in the woods, so I decided to take a walk along the river.

The trail along the river is not the most riveting trail even in spring, but right now it is downright drairy. The shrubbery separating the trail from the river is naked and looks dead, and the fields on the other side of the trail are empty.

Add the overcast sky, and the vibe was very November-y.

Walked distance: 11,3 km / 7 miles

Elevation gain: 165m / 540 ft (nearly none)

More pics and videos of our adventures last weekend... At Point Lobos we were able to do some whale watching with some binoculars, borrowed from the ranger station! Matt and I each saw the whale spout water into the air and dive back down with a tale flip!!! Next time, I want to view whales on a boat tour so we can be closer up! We were also able to see some seals in the wild! They were so cute! Yesterday, I went on my first hike since fracturing my wrist. I'm not sure my body was ready for a conditioning hike after sitting on my bum for 6 weeks. After the first mile, I realized how out of shape I was; my plan from here on out was to turn around early. I was feeling like absolute crap, like I was going to vomit, like I couldn't walk 300 feet without stopping again. I stopped to turn around probably 10 times, but convinced myself each time that I would go a bit further before throwing in the towel. Drank some more water and pressed on. After passing Snag Flat, I no longer provided myself with a choice. I didn't come all the way here to turn around. I found a (slow) pace for myself and went on with more drive, embracing the suffering. I eventually made it up in 2:15, only 15 minutes longer than my goal. This hike meant a lot of things to me: my recovery drawing ever closer (cast is off in 3 days!), the start of my training for the big season ahead, and telling that "give up" voice in the back of my head to shove it. Here's to the start of a great season. I finally made it to my #hike4 #52HikeChallenge (at Mount Si)

last week i was rained out and was not able to go hiking. this weekend looked the same, as it had snowed in the morning. but it became clear and c and i decided to do an easy 2.6 mile hike through forest park. forest park is a massive park within the city of portland with various hiking trails. we decided to do the dogwood - wild cherry loop. the first half was muddy and was a challenge to go downwards with ruby who is excited to move forward and smell. her mindset is basically, “we have to go here and then here and sniff and come on keep moving mom and things to smell.” it can be frustrating at times. on the second half, she was much better. she didn’t do that bad with other dogs or people either the entire hike. and we saw some owners who kept their dogs on leashes which pleased us. we are definitely going to be exploring more of the park this year. and we’re sure ruby will be pleased.
