How to Plant and Grow Honeywort, a Pollinator Favorite
In my garden travels around the world, I am always looking for new and different plants. After a recent visit to Sissinghurst, I observed a plant that I really wanted to try at home, having never seen it before. Beautiful in flower, the foliage is quite attractive too. Cerinthe planted at Sissinghurst in the UK Cerinthe major atropurpurea , featured at Sissinghurst Castle in England, is…

23 May 2023
It’s been a couple weeks, so let’s do a backyard check-in.
The climbing rose is still going strong, the foxglove is in full bloom halfway up the spear now, and the red yarrow has buds. I did some companion planting this past weekend, so you can see marigolds around the base of the rose, and nasturtiums in the front of the milkweed in the oak barrel. There’s chives behind the milkweed, but you can’t really see them.
Tumblr media
No new blooms here yet. The hibiscus is growing to the left of the new trellis, but its flowers are late summer. And the new trellis is to support the rapid growth of the honeysuckle and give them something else to grow up as it continues to expand. Still no flowers 😞
Tumblr media
The spike speedwell (purple spikes) and yarrow (flat yellows) are both blooming now. That’s the portulaca in the front left pot doing its afternoon bloom. I’m really happy with how tall and full the Joe Pye weed is already (between the beehouse and birdbath. And you can’t see it, but I think the moonvine seeds I planted have started at the base of the trellis.
Tumblr media
The front is messy with all of bulbs, but they’ll get cut back at the end of the month. The rue is flowering (small yellow flowers) and the meadowsweet is about to (the tall plant just in front of the black elderberry lace).
I cut back the asters by about a third to encourage them to be bushier so they won’t flop as much when they bloom this fall.
You can see one of the two hollyhocks at the far right in the back (the other is hidden on the other side of the elderberry). It hasn’t grown much, but it’s not yellowing like the one I planted last year, so I’ll take it.
And look how big the perennial sunflower is behind my evergreen!

Rhea, Mother of the Gods
Fumigation from Aromatics.
Daughter of great Protogonus, divine,
illustrious Rhea, to my pray'r incline,
Who driv'st thy holy car with speed along,
drawn by fierce lions, terrible and strong.
Mother of Zeus, whose mighty arm can wield
th' avenging bolt, and shake the dreadful shield.
Drum-beating, frantic, of a splendid mien,
brass-sounding, honor'd, Kronos' blessed queen.
Thou joy'st in mountains and tumultuous fight,
and mankind's horrid howlings, thee delight.
War's parent, mighty, of majestic frame,
deceitful saviour, liberating dame.
Mother of Gods and men, from whom the earth
and lofty heav'ns derive their glorious birth;
Th' ætherial gales, the deeply spreading sea
goddess ærial form'd, proceed from thee.
Come, pleas'd with wand'rings, blessed and divine,
with peace attended on our labours shine;
Bring rich abundance, and wherever found
drive dire disease, to earth's remotest bound.
Orphic Hymn to Rhea, trans. Taylor
Rhea is the Titaness of generation, the eternal flow of the generations, comfort, and ease. Flow in this instance was blood from menstrual cycles, fluids from birth, and milk, all substances that represent fertility in some sort of sense.
Rhea was often associated with Kybele due to their similar roles. Ancient texts sometimes associated her to Kybele despite the matron being an Anatolian Goddess.
Rhea was the wife to Kronos, Titan of Time, and Mother to the Gods Pluto, Poseidon, Hera, Hestia, Demeter, and Zeus.
Rhea is associated with the clashing of cymbals from the story of Zeus, where he was hidden on the island of Crete as an infant. The clashing of cymbals is the dancing of the Kouretes (Curetes), which were assigned by Rhea to protect her son.
"...For a long time steep Ida booms its clanging noise so the wordless infant may wail safely. Shields or empty helmets are pounded with sticks, the Curetes' or Corybantes' task. The truth hid. The ancient event's copied today: her acolytes shake brass and rumbling hides. They hammer cymbals, not helmets, and drums, not shields; the flute makes Phrygian tunes as before."
Ovid, Fasti 4. 197 ff (trans.Boyle)
"Scatter the scents I prescribe [to attract bees to a man-made hive] – bruised balm, and the honeywort's lowly herb; raise a tinkling sound, and shake the Mighty Mother's cymbals round about. Of themselves they settle on the scented resting places; of themselves, after their wont, will hide far within their cradling cells."
Virgil, Georgics 4. 62 ff (trans. Fairclough)
Rhea is associated with lions due to her husband turning the Kouretes into lions upon finding them.
"The Kouretes were the nurses of the infant Zeus, the mighty son of Kronos, what time Rhea concealed his birth and carried away the newly-born child from Kronos, his sire implacable, and placed him in the vales of Krete. And when [Kronos] the son of Ouranos beheld the lusty young child he transformed the first glorious guardians of Zeus and in vengeance made the Kouretes wild beasts. By the devising of the god Kronos they exchanged their human shape and put upon them the form of Lions."
Oppian, Cynegetica 3. 7 ff (trans. Mair)
Rhea does not have many notable stories to bear other than the story of her Deceit against Kronos. She is noted briefly in other stories such as the Birth of Apollon, where she helped bathe him, and Kronos' affair with Philrya, where she caught them and Kronos ran.

🍆 for vivi and tiare beloveds… 🥦🍋 for joy cuz i think it will be fun :3 🍒 FOR HONEY!!
also ily =3=
[oc asks]
MANYYYY LETS GO
🍆 How are they used by others? How easily are they tricked into things? + 📜
lord. what if you were born in a family of backstabbers. what if you knew from the moment you could make sense of it that the lady of the house wanted you dead. what if you knew it's always only a matter of circumstance, of you being at the right place at the right time, and then they could do it. viadera is never gonna be trusting.
+ 👑
THE THING WITH THEM HAS ALWAYS BEEN. THEY JUST SUCCUMB TO PEER PRESSURE SOOOO EASILY. if something is up They'll Know It. what they do about it depends on how it will affect their public image whether it's as resident hotgirl or coolest punk in school or ice hearted genius fencer lately. this has led to unnumerable bad decisions the best of which is acting as though they don't need friends (they do 👍)
🍒 Who is your OC’s perfect companion? + 🍯
both of the people she's been/about to be in a long relationship with are prettyboys with long pointy ears.... and adding two other people she liked that's 3/4 that had long flowing hair... but u__u one thing i've thought about before is she really can't handle people that are too pensive and melancholic. she needs NOISE and CHATTER and LAUGHTER back in her life‼‼‼‼‼
🍋 What is their kryptonite/ultimate weakness? + 🦢
was actually thinking about this this morning but. that soft spot for kids really is there. It's something I'm not sure she realizes but it definitely is a thing and will def affect her actions going forward in this arc... if we end up choosing between making sure all the disappeared children are returned safely or like, giving chase to the knights? it might be a hard choice. For something lighter: she's a night owl and hates getting sunlight in her eyes, and most importantly having to wake up early.
🥦 What do they hate about humanity/their species?
DAMNNN well 🗿🗿🗿... I dont think shes ever minded looking Strange, which is the thing that shows the most... it's all about having powers that could be exploited by others. It's why I think in the end cleric works much better than warlock for her- it's about there not being any expectation of having to give something back.

Honeywort is very easy to grow here in our region from seed and it reproduces very easily like borage does. We feed hummingbirds all year with this flower and it is especially important in winter season to sustain our bees and birds. Plant of the Day
Wednesday 19 May 2021
Here the yellow flowered Cerinthe minor (lesser honeywort) is flowering together with the more dramatic Cerinthe major 'Purpurascens' (honeywort) with blue-green leaves and tubular purple flowers with purple bracts. These hardy annuals will self-seed making them great for filling gaps in borders early in the season, while the flowers are popular with the bees.

01 June 2023 (backdated) (2 of 2)
That’s not trash in the first shot, that’s me covering up bits of grass poking through the newspapers. So much new planting space this fall!
Back bed: the rose seems just about done with blooming, which seems a change from last year. The red yarrow is getting close to blooming (in front of oak barrel). You can’t see them, but the nasturtiums in the barrel have their first buds too.
Tumblr media
Flower buds on the honeysuckle!
Tumblr media
Main bed, right side.
Not much movement here. The lavender is about to bloom on the right. No cosmos yet from the seeds I scattered in the big open area in the middle.
Tumblr media
Main bed - left side
One of the hollyhock’s leaves has turned yellow (against the fence in the back). I’m hoping for the best. The asters are bushing out after their haircut. The rue in front of them has been blooming away (yellow flowers). Behind the aster is the meadowsweet finally open (white-pink flowers). All along the front you can see the poppies and the euphorbia coming up.
The small dark red plant is the cardinal flower (later summer bloom). The plant with red stems next to the purple spike speedwell is the gaura about to bloom.
Tumblr media
Poppy!

And along the very front, the honeywort has sprouted!
