You had just finished setting the table with your younger sister whilst your dad worked on getting the food ready when a knock on the door echoed throughout the cabin. The three of you froze, heads shooting up, wide eyes flickering between one another in confusion.
Typically, you would have recognised that knock anywhere, but the months of keeping your sister hidden from the outside world and not letting anyone other than yourself or your dad into the house made you all instinctively alert.
You wrap an arm around Eleven, pulling her protectively into your side as your dad slowly places down the bowl he was holding, making his way from behind the counter towards the front door, fists clenched tightly by his sides.
“Hey, uh, it’s Steve. Am I early?”
Your shoulders instantly relax at the familiar voice, Eleven releasing her tight hold around your waist as she feels the tension leave your body. She looks up at you in surprise and you give her a comforting grin in response, pressing a kiss to her growing hair before heading in the direction of the front door.
However, you pause as you realise that your dad has already beaten you to it. He gives you a smug smirk, ushering you away and signalling that he’ll take care of it and you give him a stern look in response, meaning ‘play nice’.
He rolls his eyes and nods, holding his hands up in defence before turning towards the door. He carefully turns all of the locks, puffs his chest out and swings the door open to reveal your visibly nervous boyfriend, clutching a small bunch of nearly dead flowers in his sweaty hands. He smiles sheepishly at your dad, trying to discreetly wipe his hands off on his jeans.
“Hopper” He nods, before his eyes widen. “I mean Chief-I mean Mr Hopper-I mean sir-I..uh-” He stutters, face turning a light pink. Your dad cuts him off with a laugh disguised as a cough.
“Hopper’s fine, kid” He looks your boyfriend up and down, face emotionless and moves to the side, gesturing for him to come inside.
The brunette gulps and walks inside, stumbling slightly over his feet. El comes to stand beside you, arm returning around your waist. You glance down at her, holding back a laugh at the look of amusement on her face.
“Dinner will be ready shortly,” your dad announces after doing a quick check of the surroundings outside and relocking the door. “If you’ll excuse me.”
Steve nods quickly as Hopper turns, returning to the kitchen, busying himself with cutting up some vegetables for the coming meal. You watch as your boyfriend takes a deep, shaky breath, muttering inaudibly to himself before turning around, starting slightly once he realises he has an audience. His face instantly lights up and relaxes once he registers your warm, welcoming features looking back at him, making his way towards you quickly. God you looked gorgeous.
Your smile widens as he comes closer, blushing as he leans in to shyly peck your cheek before smiling nervously down at Eleven. He clears his throat before hurrying to separate the almost forgotten flowers in his hands into two bunches before holding them out in front of you and El.
“I-uh-I got these for you. Both of you.” He clarifies, smiling gently at you and your sister.
You feel your heart turn to mush at the adorable boy in front of you, taking the first bunch of flowers with a grateful smile. You look towards El, who’s staring wide-eyed up at Steve. You nudge her gently, nodding your head towards the flowers. She takes them carefully, looking down at them in awe before raising her head with a small smile.
“Thank you” She whispers sheepishly, before running over to the kitchen to show Hop.
You look at Steve with a wide grin, his face mirroring your own. You check that your dad’s attention is wholly captured by your sister’s excited presentation of her flowers before reaching over and putting your arms around his shoulders, kissing him quickly.
“You’re too cute!” You gush, squishing his reddening cheeks affectionately. He chuckles at your antics, before his face turns serious.
“Your dad doesn’t like me..” He murmurs, sadness pooling in his brown eyes. You cup his face in your hands, pouting at him before giving him a comforting smile.
“He does.” You reassure, “He’s just protective. They both are” You mumble, looking over to your dad and sister in the kitchen area. You turn your attention back to Steve, who’s looking at you with so much love in his eyes you think you could cry. “Besides, with the amount of times you’ve saved my life over the past two years, there’s no way either of them could hate you.”
He opens his mouth to argue but you pull away from him as you spot your dad walking towards the table with El right behind him, both carrying full plates of food for the four of you. You take Steve’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze and guide him over to the table.
Hopper and El are already sitting down beside each other, and you move to take the seat across from El before an arm stops you. Steve scrambles to pull your chair out for you, making you giggle softly at his gentlemanly behaviour as you sit down. He takes his place beside you, wiping his clammy hands off again.
You place a hand over his bouncing knee, making him turn his head towards you. You give his knee a squeeze, smiling reassuringly at him. Your dad watches the interaction carefully, the corner of his lips twitching upwards at the sight of his love-struck teen. But he would never let you see that. He clears his throat, catching both of your attentions, and motions towards the food.
“It all looks delicious” Steve praises, afraid to look your dad directly in the eye so opts to turning to Eleven instead. “Did you help make all of this?” he asks, mock surprise in his tone.
Eleven grins and nods, appreciative of her help being recognised, eyes flickering over to you. You wink at her, causing her to let out a giggle.
“Let’s eat, shall we?” Your dad’s tone is harsh and you look at him in shock, raising your eyebrows scoldingly at him. He shrugs his shoulders in response, attention turning to Steve.
“So, Steven,” he begins, tone menacing and face dead serious. “What are your intentions with my eldest daughter?”
“Dad!” You scold, eyebrows knitted in anger.
“Yeah, what are your intentions with my sister?” El mimics, arms crossed over her chest. Your head snaps to your little sister, eyes widening.
“Eleven!” You expect this from your dad, but he’s dragged her into this too?
Steve places a hand over yours, calming you instantly.
“It’s okay” He soothes, before staring directly at Hopper, hand still holding yours.
“Sir, I love your daughter.” He starts, causing you to look over at him in shock. You’d said it to each other before, but the declaration in front of your family surprised you. “All of my intentions are good, I can promise you that. My only goal in our relationship is to make her happy every chance I can get and I know how lucky I am to have her. I would never dream of hurting her and I know we haven’t really talked about it before, but I can’t imagine my future without her in it.” He finishes his speech, now looking at you.
Your eyes are full of tears, your face sporting a wide grin as you gaze at him in awe. You turn to your dad, surprised to see a wide smile on his face too. Glancing at El, her face mirrors his and they look at each other and nod.
He turns back to Steve, holding his hand out over the table. Steve looks at it in surprise, before composing himself and taking it in a firm grip.
“That was a test.” He says. “We wanted to make sure you were good enough for our girl. And now that we see that you are..” He trails off, letting go of his hand and looking down at El with a smile.
“Welcome to our family!” She exclaims, grinning.
Steve looks like he’s about to burst into tears as he looks at you, you squeezing his hand tightly as your expression mirrors his own. You know how much those four little words mean to him, what with his own family being so absent in his life. You turn to your family with a teary laugh.
“Thank you” Steve chokes out, covering his shaky voice with a cough.
Hopper nods with a knowing smile, before gesturing to the food.
“Well, we didn’t slave away in the kitchen all afternoon for this to go to waste. Eat up.” He jokes, nudging his shoulder against El’s. The table erupts into laughter as the four of you dig into your meals, your hand still clutched tightly in Steve’s own.
The remainder of the night is less awkward than the start. The conversation between the four of you flows easily and by the end of the night, you are all laughing together and sharing stories, your dad telling Steve your most embarrassing moments growing up, much to your dismay. Eleven had quickly warmed up to Steve and stayed glued to his side for most of the night, much to your delight.
When it was eventually time for Steve to bid goodnight to you all, your dad gave him an approving pat on the back and thanked him for looking after you when he couldn’t. As Steve made his way to the door, El wrapped him in a warm embrace, making him stumble before returning the embrace with a chuckle. You watched them with watery eyes and a wide smile, thankful that she felt so comfortable around him.
“I’ll walk you out.” You offer as El releases him, ruffling her hair as she walks back past you to join your dad in the living room. You grab a coat from the rack by the door, helping Steve with the many locks before following him out onto the porch.
Your eyes scan the surroundings out of habit before settling on your boyfriend’s glowing features once satisfied that it was safe. You grin at him, shuffling over to wrap your arms around his waist, nestling your head against his warm chest as his arms come up to cocoon you in his embrace. He sighs against your head, chest vibrating with a chuckle as he reaches up to cup your face in his warm hands, proceeding to litter every inch of your face with sloppy kisses.
“Thank you.” he begins, pulling back to smile lovingly at you. “Not just for tonight, but for everything. For choosing me to love and to bring into your family. You’ll never know how thankful I am.”
Your heart warms at his words, shaking your head and cupping his face in your colder hands. “It’s me who should be thanking you. Most people would not be able to handle all of this,” you say, gesturing to the empty space surrounding you and the cabin you call home. “But you don’t even bat an eyelid. And how sweet you were with El...I just-I really love you. So much.”
His smile widens at your words, repeating them back to you without hesitation. He leans in, relieved at finally being able to give you a proper kiss before he is cut off by a loud knock on the glass beside you. Your heads snap to the window and are met with the disapproving glares of your dad and sister, shaking their heads at Steve and waiting until he steps hurriedly back from you before lowering the curtain with matching smirks.
“I guess that’s my cue.” Steve chuckles, hand coming up to rub the back of his neck. “I’ll call you as soon as I’m home.”
You nod, ignoring the fact that your family is probably still watching and rushing over to give him a soft kiss. You smile sheepishly when you pull back for air, chuckling at the expression on Steve’s face. “Sorry. Couldn’t help myself. I’ll be waiting for your call, Stevie.”
He laughs, giving you a mock salute before making his way off of the porch and back towards his car, parked discreetly off to the side of the cabin. You wait until he is safely inside and driving away before heading back through the cabin door and bolting it again. You roll your eyes at the pointed look from your dad and join your sister on the couch, wrapping her into your embrace as your dad chooses a movie for you to watch. You loved your little family to pieces and it made you so happy to know that Steve was welcomed into it with open arms.

“I don’t think I can go through this again... Once was enough, but twice? No, no, no.”
Hopper was strewn across the couch, arms over his head and legs splayed out. He slumped over like he was tired of carrying the world’s weight on his shoulders.
“Can’t do what, Hop?” Joyce questioned, replacing the clothes in the dryer with the clothes in the washing machine. “Let your kid grow up?”
“Grow- Hold on, you’re on her side?”
Joyce rolled her eyes, starting the dryer and bringing her laundry basket over to the table to fold the clothes. “There are no sides.”
“No, no, you are. You’re on her side.”
“Okay, fine. I’m on your teenage daughter’s side, who has done nothing wrong.”
“Nothing wrong-?” Hopper sat up, ignoring the instant head rush that followed. “Joyce, she had a boy in her room - a boy - and if I hadn’t gotten there when I did, who knows what would have happened? I swear, it’s Mike all over again.”
Joyce tossed a pair of mismatched socks on the table, resisting the urge to roll her eyes again. She loves the man, but he constantly pushes her buttons. “I mean, she is at that age. It was only a matter of time before she got curious and started exploring her sexual-”
“Joyce!” Hopper groaned, covering his face with his palms as though that would prevent his ears from hearing her words. “Why the hell would you say that? You know something I don’t?”
She shot him an annoyed look, not withholding her eye-rolling. Heaving a sigh, Joyce turned to her laundry, taking note to sew the hole in Will’s shirt.
“She’s almost an adult. Do you expect her not to know or be interested in those things?” She refrained from using the forbidden ‘S’ word to prevent Hopper freaking out. Again.
“No! What kind of question even is that? What? Do you expect Jonathan and Will to be doing those things?” He threw his hands in the air, returning Joyce’s annoyed look.
“Will, no. Jonathan, yes. I mean, c’mon, Hopper, you saying you weren’t like that when you were their age?”
The man could only grumble. Joyce was right. While he was significantly older, he hadn’t refined much since his teenage days. The problem was that even though he was as wild and free as ever, that didn’t mean he wanted to imagine or see his kids doing the same. The thought was grossly unfathomable to him.
Joyce sighed as she cast a glance at Hopper. She could see his inner turmoil, and although his reaction was overly exaggerated, she offered him some solace.
“Look, Y/N is a good girl. I’m sure nothing is or was going on. It’s likely just what she said - they were playing around. Kids do that, you know. If you can somehow pull your head out of your ass, you’ll see why she didn’t tell you about him.” As Joyce was speaking, Hopper opened his mouth to spew what she knew were more excuses. She held her hand up, effectively shutting his mouth.
“You don't even know the boy. He’s sweet, and he seems to care about Y/N a lot. That should make you happy.”
It did. Hopper wouldn’t admit it aloud, but he was glad that the little punk treated his daughter well, even if the man thought the boy had other intentions.
Joyce snapped as an idea came to mind. She turned to Hopper with a coy grin, and he didn’t like where she was headed. “Dinner. We’ll have dinner. And if you decide you still don’t like it, fine. But you have to try at least.”
After a few contemplative minutes, Hopper begrudgingly resigned, sinking further into the couch. “Fine. Dinner it is.”
——
You don't think you’ve ever seen Eddie so skittish. His eyes were wide and alert, and he constantly looked over his shoulder so he would be prepared if your crazy dad came charging at him again.
“D-Dinner?” Eddie sputtered over his words. “You want me to go to dinner with you and your dad? Your dad tried to kill me!”
The nearby patrons of the cafeteria stopped talking after Eddie's outburst, turning their full attention to you two. You smiled sheepishly, waving a hand dismissively. You were granted a reprieve when someone yelled across the cafeteria, and all staring was redirected.
You sighed, turning back to Eddie. “Look, I know my dad was…”
“Crazy, insane, deranged? Murderous, maybe?”
You grinned at Eddie's interruption. While you felt bad, seeing him so frantic was adorable. You hid your amusement behind your hand, clearing your throat and trying to get back to the issue. “You’re right. He was a bit murderous, but if he got to know you, he would love you.”
Eddie sent you a skeptical look, and you adjusted your words. “Love might be a bit strong, but he would definitely like you. I’m sure. I like you, and I happen to have very great judgment.”
“That’s debatable.” Mike interrupted as he plopped down in the seat next to you.
You rolled your eyes, “Funny. Don’t think I asked for your opinion.”
“No, what’s funny is how Hopper tried to kill Eddie.” The boy opened a can of Coke, and the sizzling annoyed you just as much as he did. “He was like, ‘I'm going to kill you for dating my daughter’.”
Mike’s impression of Hopper wasn’t that far off, but his levity of the situation deterred your endeavors of convincing Eddie to come to dinner. Eddie was back on alert, not that he’d ever stopped being overly cautious.
“Dating?” Gareth asked as he and the rest of the crew joined the party. To say that you wanted you and Eddie to be alone was understated. “Congrats, guys. I didn’t even know.”
“Thanks, man. Just let me know if you see a man about yea high with a murderous look in his eyes.”
“Context, please.”
“Can we just leave it alone? Yes, Eddie and I are dating. No, you will not get any context.” You quickly shut down the impending questions that would follow once you and Eddie started explaining.
You don’t think Eddie was paying much attention to the conversation anyway. He resorted to virtually sitting in your seat, hoping you might save him if your dad came around. You wanted to reassure him by explaining that even though your dad was homicidal the first time they met, he wouldn’t actually kill him. But, as you thought about it, you honestly didn’t put a thing past your dad. It is Hopper you're talking about.
You overheard Dustin asking how nobody caught on to you two dating because he caught on after the first few times you hung out together. You couldn’t help but agree silently. You and Eddie had not been subtle about liking each other at all.
Pushing the conversation to the back of your mind, you rekindled the one with Eddie. “He said he’d give you a chance, and, believe it or not, my dad hardly goes back on his word.”
Those were the wrong choice of words, it seemed, with how Eddie finally stopped glancing at all the available exits for his escape plan and whipped his head around to look at you with widened eyes.
He was progressively looking like a deer in headlights the more he thought about being brutally murdered by the chief of police. “So, he was, like, serious? About, you know, killing me?”
“Eddie, he never said he was going to kill you.” He didn't exactly say the words, but his actions proved otherwise. You didn't voice those thoughts, though.
Sighing, you grabbed Eddie’s hand. “I really like you, and it would take so much more than my, like you said, deranged dad to change that. And you totally don’t have to go if you don’t want to, but I want my dad to see you the way I do.”
Your words seemed to do the trick. Eddie laughed, and his grin resulted in one of your own. “Could’ve just told me you were obsessed with me, sweetheart.”
You rolled your eyes, pushing him away from you, “Shut it, Munson.” Pursing your lips to hide your smile, you squeezed his hand, “So... dinner?”
Eddie leaned his head back, hair sweeping behind his shoulders. He hummed before sitting up and wrapping an arm around you. “Dinner.” He held up a finger before you could thank him. “But only because I feel bad you’re terribly infatuated with me.”
“I hate you.”
“You love me.”
“Aww, aren’t you guys cute?”
“Shut up, Mike,” both of you groaned, resulting in laughter from the group.
——
You think that inviting Eddie to dinner was a grave mistake. Hopper had been staring Eddie down the entire time, which made for an awkward conversation.
Just when you were about to ask your dad to stop terrorizing your boyfriend, he stabbed a fork in his mashed potatoes. “So, Munson, what are your intentions with my daughter?”
“Dad!” You groaned, sending him an annoyed look.
“What? It’s a simple question. It shouldn’t be too difficult for him to answer. Or maybe it is with all those extra years in school.” He grumbled the last words under his breath, and you were so close to giving him a big piece of your mind when Eddie replied.
“It’s fine, Y/N. And, uh, sir, I have no ‘intentions’ with your daughter. I just think she’s really cool, and she’s such an amazing person. So, yeah,” Eddie glanced over at you, offering a grin. “No intentions, but I really like her, sir.”
You took a sip of water, hoping the coolness would diminish the heat that swarmed your face at his compliments. Eddie was never one to shy away from telling you how he felt, but your heart skipped a beat or two faster with how he looked at you.
Eddie’s response was a good one, and there was nothing Hopper could say as much as he tried, so he only grumbled as he ate his potatoes.
The conversation went back to normal - talk about school, the new mall they were building, blah, blah, blah. Then it took a surprising turn.
Jonathan was pretty quiet during the entire span of dinner, scarfing down as much food as he could. You knew it was due to the hefty amount of purple palm tree delight Argyle left him with on his last visit.
That’s what led to him speaking. “Hey, Eddie…” Jonathan squinted as if he wasn’t sure Eddie was the one sitting in front of him. Eddie hummed, and Jonathan nodded, convinced that Eddie was indeed sitting in front of him.
“You still, uh, you still coming on the trip with us, man?”
Eddie’s head shot up so quickly you would think he got whiplash. His mouth opened and closed like a fish. You sent a wild look to Jonathan, waving your hands to get him to stop talking.
You hadn’t exactly meant for it to be a secret; you just never got around to telling your dad about it. And, in light of recent events, you decided it was best to wait until things blew over, but Jonathan seemed intent on ruining that plan.
Mike raised an eyebrow at your frantic movements, and you coughed, reaching for your water when Joyce sent you a concerned look. It seemed you weren’t transparent enough because Jonathan continued, despite your attempts at diffusing the situation.
“This chicken is so good, Joyce,” was said as you picked at the piece to prove your point.
“You know,” Jonathan blinked slowly, mistaking Eddie's nonresponse as confusion. “To the Cali trip. I talked to my man, Argyle, and he can’t wait to meet you, you know, thinks you’re pretty rad.”
The silence that followed was loud, terribly so. Your fork was lifted halfway to your mouth with the chicken you suddenly didn’t have an appetite for anymore.
Mike’s expression developed into shock and slight amusement, which pissed you off, but it wasn’t the time to reprimand him. Will’s widened eyes caught your gaze, sharing your mortification. Joyce looked like she might be close to laughing with how her lips rolled together. You wanted to be annoyed, but honestly, you can’t fault her.
And El, not knowing why the table’s facial expressions ranged from mortified to humorous, tilted her head in confusion. Her brows furrowed, and you made a special note to start explaining things more. She was lost most of the time, and it’s your job as her big sister to direct her on the right path. That’s something you’ll worry about later, though.
Meanwhile, Eddie looked like he might shit a brick - a perfectly rectangular one. You’re sure you look the same.
And Jonathan, the cause of the array of facial charades, was just as confused as El until it settled in. You wonder if some genetic thing makes the Byers form similar expressions. His face morphed into shock, like the rest of the crowd. The next he made was guilty, and you’re so glad he feels that way about the mess he created. His shaggy hair flipped around as he turned to you. You could barely understand the words he tried to mouth, but they were apropos of the situation, like ‘I’m so sorry.’
He should be.
A harsh clang of silverware on the table made everyone jump, removing them from their stupor. You don’t know how you or anyone else could have forgotten about Hopper. You slowly dragged your eyes over to your dad, and his expression exceeded all your expectations of what it would be. It’s comical and terrifying, and the way Eddie’s face paled, you think he might have actually shit that brick.
Hopper’s face was red, resembling the color of the salad bowl. Like the first unpleasant time he met Eddie, literal steam came from his ears and nose, nostrils flaring as he gripped the table.
You were trying to think of anything that could appease the situation. You screwed up. Majorly. Totally. Tragically. Your heart attempted to flee your chest cavity in hopes of escaping what appeared to be a perfectly disastrous situation.
“What. The. Hell?!” Hopper’s words came out in disgruntled anger, interrupting your meticulous planning, and you wished you hadn't tried to introduce the two. After all, you are the daughter of a cop, and this cop is notorious for taking things over the top.
“Dad, wait, I can explain-” The words tumbled out of your mouth before you thought of an actual explanation.
“Oh, you sure can, missy. Please tell me why you not only lied about who was going on the trip, but you were going to sneak off with him and do god knows what.”
You blubbered over your words as you twisted your fingers. You knew your dad had a temper, that much was evident when he tried to attack Eddie, but this was worse. You hated when he was mad, even more so when he directed it toward you.
“What, you have nothing to say? Go on, tell me! Tell me why my daughter has become someone completely different since meeting this freak!”
Any thought of not talking back in fear of making your dad angrier disappeared. You could handle him being mad at you - you didn’t like it, but it was tolerable. What you refused to tolerate was him treating Eddie like shit.
Standing up, you slammed your hands down on the table, rattling the silverware and the people at the table. You weren’t known for your outbursts so seeing you in this state was surprising to everyone, even your dad, who raised an eyebrow.
“You do not get to talk to him like that. God, Dad, you wanna know why I didn’t tell you? I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d do this - overreact.”
Hopper’s eyes widened, and he stood as well. “You think this is overreacting? Oh, trust me, you haven’t seen overreacting yet.”
“Don’t you hear yourself, Dad? You haven’t even given him a chance, and yet, somehow, your mind is all made up. Do you see the problem there?”
Out of the corner of your eye, you could see everyone itching to get away from the table, and honestly, you wished you could do the same. But instead, here you were, arguing with your dad about your boyfriend while said boyfriend was sitting next to you, looking petrified.
Hopper sighed frustratedly, dragging a hand down his reddened face. “No, Y/N, the problem is with him. I don’t want my daughter dating someone one step away from being his dad-”
Eddie stood up this time, and all eyes shot to him. He cleared his throat, “You know what, I think I’m gonna go. The food was great, Mrs. Byers, but I have a chemistry test tomorrow. And, well, I wanna pass, so yeah.”
“Ed-” You felt terrible. You wanted this dinner and practically forced him to come even though he was reluctant, and now he was leaving early because your dad couldn’t keep his so wrong opinions about Eddie to himself.
“It’s okay, really,” Eddie grinned at you, trying to show that he wasn’t affected as you were. He whispered the last words, “Hey, at least I know what it’s like dating the daughter of a cop.”
His reassurances did little to reassure you. So, when he left, and everyone at the table was trying to make it seem like they weren’t there, you turned to your dad. There was so much you wanted to say to him. You would have told him how much of a literal asshole he was.
But all you could say was, “You didn’t even try, Dad. You said you would.”
With that, you walked off, following after Eddie, hoping your dad hadn’t ruined your relationship with the one person you didn’t want to lose.
The front door slammed shut, and Hopper had half a mind to tell you to come back inside, but he kept it to himself. It was tense then, and Joyce, who needed to have a lengthy chat with Hopper, told the kids to give them some space.
They hurried away, mumbling, "I have to use the bathroom anyway," and "do you guys wanna play video games?"
Once the table was clear, Joyce turned to Hopper, awaiting an explanation. Hopper plopped down in his chair, covering his face with his hands as he groaned vehemently.
“Do you see what I mean? And she says that I’m overreacting.”
Joyce’s muted response prompted the angry man to remove his hands from his face and send her an inquisitive eyebrow raise. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“C’mon, Hop, do I really have to say anything?”
“So you agree? I mean, I can’t be the only way that sees a major problem with-”
“Jesus, Hopper, are you serious?” Joyce furrowed her eyebrows as she glared at the man sitting next to her. She had put up with his initial disinterest in Eddie because most dads are like that, but she was annoyed now with him actively being an asshole.
“Look, I get it, she’s your daughter, but you’re going to ruin your relationship with her if you continue acting like this.” Hopper opened his mouth to no doubt spout a series of excuses when Joyce held up a hand, signaling him to shut up. “Do you really want to know why Y/N didn’t tell you? She was scared, Hop. Scared of how you might react because she likes a boy you wouldn’t give a first chance. And she hid it because she didn’t want to disappoint you.”
“But, Joyce-”
“No buts, Hop. Eddie, who is very sweet, by the way, hasn’t done anything wrong. You’re letting your judgment get in the way and doing the same thing you did with El to Y/N, and you saw how that worked out. So, you tell me, what is your problem?”
Hopper didn’t answer the question everyone was asking, instead sulking in his seat like a petulant child. He pulled out a cigarette and didn’t even bother to light it, just letting it hang between his pouting lips.
Joyce shook her head, crossing her arms, “We can sit here all night until you fess up, or you can just pull your head out of your stubborn ass and tell me what’s going on.”
The man rubbed his forehead, sitting up in his chair and hanging his head low. He stared at the chip in the floorboards before heaving a dreary sigh. “She’s my girl, Joyce. She’s my little girl, and yeah, maybe I was overreacting-”
“You think?” Hopper didn’t even have the energy to roll his eyes.
“Just- look, I know that she’s getting older. They’re both getting older. But she’s my girl, Joyce, my little girl. What if she gets older and she-” Hopper choked on his words. “What if she gets older and forgets all about her old man?”
“Hop…” Joyce sighed. “Our kids - they’re gonna get older. We can’t change that. But if there’s one thing I know about Y/N," she ducked her head to meet his eyes. “She is never going to forget her dad... as long he stops acting like an asshole.”
Hopper chuckled, wiping a stray tear from his face, “Yeah, you’re right.”
“Give him a chance, Hopper. He makes her happy.”
“Okay,” he resigned. He lit his cigarette, furrowing his brows, “How come you’re always right? Is it like a woman’s intuition thing?”
“No, you’re just a moron most of the time.”
——
“So,” Eddie inquired as he tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, “Got a place in mind?”
After storming out the front door, you made your way to Eddie’s van, thankful it was still there. You thought he would be long gone after your dad practically bit his head off, but no. He had just started his vehicle and was contemplating if this time Hopper would actually kill him when the passenger side door flung open.
“Please don’t kill me!” The words were frenzied as Eddie squeezed his eyes shut and held his hands in front of him as if that would protect him from Hopper’s rage.
You grabbed his hands, laughing as you slid into the van. “Wasn’t planning on it.”
“I don’t know. Anywhere with you is good.”
“M’kay, how about…” He hummed before taking a right turn to a lookout point. “Here?”
“Here’s good.”
For the first time, the air was awkward between you two. You didn’t like it, but you didn’t know what to say. What do you say to someone after your dad was an asshole to them during dinner and then proceeded to call them a freak more than once?
Eddie’s “so…” was said simultaneously with your “I’m so sorry.”
You made eye contact, and he let out a laugh you couldn’t help but copy. “Sorry,” he said after catching his breath, “you can go first.”
“My dad,” you started, looking away from him and instead focusing on the view outside. “My dad was an asshole to you, and I know that I can’t make up for that, but I am so sorry, Eddie. Believe me, if I knew he would act that way, I would have never pushed for dinner.”
“Y/N-”
You shook your head, forcing yourself to make eye contact so he could see your genuineness. “No, Eddie. He said some really hurtful things, and I’m really sorry. And, uh, I would totally understand if you, I don’t know, didn’t want to be with me anymore because, well, who wants to deal with a dad like mine.”
“Do you-” Eddie leaned forward, resting his arms on the steering wheel. “You don’t actually think I want that… right?”
You shrugged, toying with a stray thread on the hem of your shirt. “I would understand if you did.”
“Okay, let’s correct that, yeah? I definitely don’t want to break up. I wasn’t lying when I said all that to your dad.”
You stammered, trying to list all the possibilities why Eddie not wanting to be with you was reasonable. All of which included your dad.
“I thought it was pretty hot, honestly.”
You raised an eyebrow, finally directing your gaze to him. He smiled sheepishly again, embarrassed. “Your dad is… he’s a work of art, but that has nothing to do with you. And I mean, the way you stood up to him - highly doubt anyone in their right mind would do that - I don’t know, it was interesting seeing you riled up over little ole me.”
“Pretty hot or interesting? Gotta pick, Munson.” You cracked a grin at the red tint that rose to his cheeks
“Hot,” he nodded, certain of his answer. “Definitely hot.”
Then the air was back to normal, and it felt good to breathe it in. You tutted and shook your head, “Who’s obsessed with who, now?”
“Oh, I’ve always been obsessed with you, sweetheart. You’re just in denial about being obsessed with me.”
You could only roll your eyes, turning to face the door so he wouldn’t see the smile on display. The two of you sat in comfortable silence, watching the night settle over Hawkins until Eddie spoke.
“What about you?” You acknowledged his question with a hum. “You sure you still want to be with me? I mean, I know you’re completely infatuated with me." That made you chuckle. “And you’re also pretty close with your dad. Believe me, I don’t want to stop what we have, but I also don’t want to mess that up.”
“I don't want that either.” Eddie frowned slightly, and you realized how your words sounded, so you corrected them. “What I mean is, I don’t want us to end. My dad means a lot to me, and I love him, but I also love you. And I really don’t want to lose you. I meant what I said before. It would take so much more than my crazy dad to make me not want you. Screw this whole goddamn town. I could care less what they think.”
You finished your rant with a huff. You felt relieved, finally having said everything you’ve been holding in since this whole fiasco with your dad and Eddie began.
You don’t know what you were expecting Eddie’s expression to be after your winded rant, but you certainly weren’t expecting to be met with a budding grin. Raising your eyebrow, you questioned why he looked so amused.
“You love me, huh?” You were confused until it hit you. You accidentally told Eddie, of all people, that you were in love with him.
You’re never going to live this one down.
“Shut up.”
Eddie dramatically splayed himself across your lap. He threw his arm over his head, fanning himself with his hand as if he was but a distressed maiden.
The brunet opened one eye, keeping the other squeezed shut. He held his hand up to his ear, “I’m sorry. I don’t think I quite heard you the first time. Could you repeat that again?” You rolled your eyes, looking away from his simpering grin before you gave in and wore one yourself.
“I said I hated you.”
“I can’t believe that you, Y/N Hopper, love me, Eddie the freak Munson.”
“Yeah, well, unfortunately, you’re my freak.”
Eddie smiled up at you, and this time, you mimicked him. “I guess it’s time to tell you that I’m in love with the daughter of a cop.”

♡ three clues - r.b ♡
requested by 🐍 anon <3 (i hate how i've written this it is not my best work sorry😭)
robin buckley x hopper!reader, dad!hopper x daughter!reader, fluff, humour, coming out
your dad, a seasoned detective, is the last to discover your sexuality
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hopper's mind raced as he backed silently out of the kitchen he'd just seen you and your best friend, robin, making out in. you on the counter and her standing in front of you. and your faces together. he was blinking rapidly, fearfully.
what had he missed?
clue one - robin had ten times more sleepovers than your childhood best friend.
his original solve - you'd just got closer this year. nothing weird about that.
"you see? it wasn't... obvious." your dad protested to joyce, who was filing away products on shelves and laughing.
"that one's a subtle clue. but there were other signs, hop."
hopper grunted, "yeah? like what?"
clue two - the matching jewelry, pyjamas, shoes, mixtapes
his original solve - friends do that... right?
clue three - all the cuddling and movie nights and sleep overs in the matching, skimpy pyjamas that made hopper remember you were too old to be told what to wear
his original solve - friends. friends. friends. that's just what girls do! right...?
joyce sighed, patting his shoulder, and he sagged, "i... i just thought they were friends?"
the shorter woman surveyed him for a moment, "it doesn't bother you, does it?"
he thought.
it certainly wasn't something he'd been exposed to much.
but neither was the upside down, and he'd adjusted to that just fine.
more than anything, he wanted you comfortable, loved, and happy. he'd lost a daughter before, and that wasn't in his control. he wouldn't lose one that he didn't have to.
ultimately he shook his head, "no. she's my daughter. and she could do worse than robin buckley, i guess."
joyce smiled, with an undertone of pride. the one thing she forgot to mention was that hopper should go on as if he didn't know, until they felt comfortable enough to tell him.
instead, hopper greeted you at the front door with a tiny rainbow flag decorating the mug on his home desk.
"where'd this come from, dad?" you questioned airily as you walked past, flicking it on the way, to place your bag down.
he shrugged, "my friend gave it to me, my gay friend, we're very close. she put it on my desk this morning."
there was a slight stress on his last two words, and an involuntary glance to the kitchen that made you wonder what he was thinking of, and how he held up in interrogatins with this, albeit uncharacteristic, flighty quality.
"o... kay? cool..."
hopper narrowed his eyes, "i'm not gay. but i'm really... erm, cool with the whole thing."
there was a grunt in his words that easily conveyed his discomfort, but you couldn't figure out why for the life of you. maybe you hadn't inherited his detective skills, because it was obvious to him what he was hinting at.
"do you have any... gay friends?"
you shrugged, "maybe."
he gave you a thumbs up.
jim hopper, your dad, gave you a thumbs up. you blinked in genuine shock.
mission failed. he'd try again tomorrow.
that night, you stayed on the phone to robin well past midnight, trying to silence your laughter with your pillow as you told her about your dad's strange behavior.
"a thumbs up? she giggled, "that's not like him. you'd think he suddenly realised you were gay or something."
you smiled, "imagine."
the smile dropped. robin went silent on the other end of the phone.
"you don't think-"
"d'ya reckon-"
"he can't."
"he could..."
clues number two and three that he'd definitely figured it out was the newspaper he left open on the counter the next morning, with an article circled aggressively in biro pen.
PRIDE PARADES - SINCE 1970
the third clue? the tiny heart drawn next to it.
maybe it was el. but it wasn't a coincidence, and you sighed.
how did he possibly figure it out? we were so subtle...
it was joyce you ran to first, also. and she laughed the laugh of someone who knows everything and can't believe others are so unfathomably clueless.
you told your dad anyway. with the real words, no skirting around it. he gave you a slightly stiff nod and a clap on the back. you knew what that meant.
i'm proud of you, kid.

apple juice and apologies
written for the @strangerthingswritersguild daily prompt “I’m so glad I found you” (10/3/2024)
pairing: jim & el hopper (not romantically, obviously)
wc: 696 haha nice
no warnings
🩵
El wakes up to a faint knock on her door. She sleepily rubs at her eyes and pokes her bed head up out of the sheets, looking around to make sure she isn’t dreaming. Her dad pops his head around the door.
“Hey kid, can I uh… Can I come in?”
She nods, she wants to stop herself from nodding but does it anyway. She doesn’t want to have to face what’s about to come her way in a few moments. El had one hell of a night with almost no sleep after the explosive argument, and after dad told her straight up how he felt about things with Mike, she danced around her own issues with Hopper, afraid he might yell at her even more.
She takes a deep breath, sitting up in the bed. When she looks up she notices that he’s carrying a tray in his hands and puts it on the bedside table. It has all her favorites; apple juice and eggos drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with blueberries and some kind of powder. Sugar, maybe. Oh, it’s the one they use for baking cookies sometimes!
Her heart swells for a couple of seconds until she remembers what she’s supposed to be doing. El gathers her courage and looks up at him again. He sits down on the edge of the bed.
Hop— dad looks as devastated as El does; deep bags under his eyes, hints that he’d been crying, and the top of his forehead isn’t shining the way it usually does. He’s not wearing his work uniform today, even though he should be. Dad’s still in yesterday’s clothes.
El reaches out to hold his hand. “We need to have a talk, and no shouting this time.”
He looks at her, eyes full of hurt and regret for the things he said. “Come on, kid, just—”
“Dad,” she says. “I know our things didn’t go the way we wanted them to but we have to talk it out. Joyce tells me that’s what I should do with you. If we don't, I'm scared we will not talk ever again.”
“El…”
“It’s a hard conversation to have, dad. I know. I know you want to set these.. Is the word boundaries? …between me and Mike and you, but you could have said it without shouting at me. I know I shouted at you too and I’m sorry.”
Dad sighs. “I know you’re getting older and you're changing, and that’s what’s scaring me. That at some point you won’t need me anymore and you’ll be able to make decisions all on your own. I just don’t want you to grow up, but I know that’s not how life works…”
“I will always need you, dad,” she replies, making room in the bed for him to sit next to her. As soon as he sits down, she wraps her arms around him and cuddles into his side. Even though they had that fight last night, he’s still her dad and she’s still his daughter. “I will always thank you for taking care of me and making me feel like a person.”
She looks up at him, wiping away a tear rolling down his cheek.
“I’m so glad I found you, kid. You deserve someone who’s going to take care of you and look after you every step of the way.”
“Someone like Steve?”
Dad laughs, warming her heart. “Sure, kid.”
El smiles, snuggling closer to him, until she remembers the waffles and juice. She rests the tray on her lap and hands him the fork. “We can share?”
“Thank you, I’m starving,” he says, breaking off a piece of the waffle for himself and a piece off for El. He hands the fork back to her.
As they tuck in with big smiles, dad puts the music on from the little box on the bedside table. Static erupts from the box and dad curses under his breath, until a song comes on. He sits back down on the bed.
“Hey, kid?”
“Yes, dad?”
“I’m a better dad than Steve, right?”
El laughs. “Yes, but you can’t tell him I said that.”

Punk Princess
Ao3| Part 1| Part 2| Part 3| Part 4| Part 5 | Part 6| Part 7| Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10| Part 11 | Part 12 | Part 13 | Part 14 | Part 15 | Part 16 | Part 17 | Part 18 (Next Part)
One of Steve’s favorite things to do on the weekends is what El has deemed “Punk Princess” time.
Hopper works a lot as the Chief of police, so Steve and El have had plenty of time to figure out what exactly they like to do together and how to make things fun. And it’s not like Hopper is an absent father for El by any means, but after everything that happened with El going missing when she went to look for her mom, Steve did get a little firm with Hopper about being more present in his daughter's life. Because being a parent isn’t something you can call yourself in name only. You have to be there for your kid. Love them, notice when they go missing.
Steve had been beside himself when he’d gotten home from school and she wasn’t there, trying to get ahold of Hopper and getting no answer. He was frankly a mess that she’d gone missing and apparently so had Hop, and then the Billy of it all and tunnels happened and El had shown back up and Steve had just scooped her up into his arms burying his face in her neck to hide the tears.
When the evening was done, and Steve was laid up on the couch so Hop could keep a better eye on him through the concussion, Steve had laid into him. Hopper hadn’t even gotten angry at Steve for the harsh words he threw at him at the time. Simply pulling an angry, crying Steve to his chest and hugging him stating “You’re right kid, I’ll do better”
But sometimes Hopper still has to work those long weekend hours and that’s when it was Steve and El’s ‘Punk Princess’ time.
She’d originally coined the name as ‘Bitchin Punk time’ but after she heard Eddie call Steve Princess one time, she got stuck on calling it ‘Punk Princess time’ and the rest was history.
The day usually consists of El scouring half of Steve’s wardrobe for exactly what she wants to wear, topping it off with the jacket her sister Kali gave her, before asking Steve to do her hair and make up to make her look Bitchin’ and then wrestling Steve into whatever outfit she picks for him and doing his makeup for him in turn.
Steve fucking cherishes these moments.
They usually spend the afternoon with El making demands for Steve to play whatever song she wants to hear on his guitar and to sing for her, holding concerts till their throats hurt.
And Steve teaches El how to fight.
He’s not an expert in it by any means and he started off teaching her some of the basics Cam had taught him over the summer, before incorporating more as he learned it in his own jujitsu classes he had started taking.
El was way too good at fighting, although Steve’s pretty sure she cheats, using her powers sometimes to enhance a move. But he’s never going to tell her to stop.
Usually when she does though he always makes sure to offer up some advice he thinks could be important one day.
“Knowing how to do this and incorporate it with your powers is wonderful, it’s a great way to learn new kinds of control over it, but you have to practice it without them too, just as you, no super powers. Because you never know if somethings going to happen where you don’t have access to them, but you’re still going to need to protect yourself.” she always gets her super serious face on when he offers her advice, nodding along and absorbing it like a sponge.
This weekend Steve changes up their routine a bit.
“Hey bug, how do you feel about a shopping trip?” Els's entire face lights up. “ I figured after we get all dresses and punked out, we can head out to the diner for breakfast, and then go to the Mall in the next town over since the one here isn’t open yet, get you some clothes that feel more like you.” She’s absolutely beaming at him, and Steve would quite literally do anything to get her to smile like that all the time
“Dad says I’m not supposed to go out too much though.”
“Eh, Hops a grumpy old man. He’s done worse than sneaking out to go shopping when he was closer to our age. Besides, you’re gonna look so bitchin’ no one’s gonna notice that you're Eleven. They’re just gonna think you're a super awesome Punk Princess.” She giggles
“Would it be okay if Max comes?”
“Hell yea Bug, give her a call while I hop in the shower and we can get this show on the road.”
Sometimes Steve feels bad, that he spends so much of his free time with El, and not a ton of it with Dustin, Lucas and Mike and even Max, and he brought it up to Dustin once, asking him if there was anything he could do to be better towards them as well and Dustin had just laughed his fully belly laugh and hugged Steve, stating simply and matter of factly ‘ Steve you literally dedicated all your time to all of us, you live with El, you’re bound to feel like you see her more. But trust me when I tell you, you do more than enough for all of us and we love you for it, even if you couldn’t spend as much time with us. You do just about everything for us and even though you complain way too loudly about it when you do, we know what we mean to you. Just like you know what you mean to us.” and that was that. Steve did notice for a while after that, the rest of the party would show up randomly at his house to spend time with him now. It felt like it was more for him then for them, but he really wasn’t about to start complaining because those kids meant the world to him.
As Steve busies himself putting on the clothes El left for him outside the bathroom door, his mind wanders to Eddie.
Eddie who spent practically the entirety of Friday doting on Steve between classes and during free period. It’s like after their talk a whole new door had opened and made whatever they had before that much stronger. It was hard for him that entire day to not just kiss Eddie every chance he got. But they weren’t even dating and whatever long game they were playing didn’t currently include kissing, except for the wrist and jaw.
God Steve’s entire body gets warm every time Eddie places a soft kiss to the inside of his wrist, the raw intimacy of it, attached to the promise behind it has him practically swooning every time it happens.
“Steve, you are taking to long, I have the makeup ready.” El’s voice calls through the door and he chuckles to himself, looking over the outfit she’d picked out for him. He’s wearing tight black pants, that are probably too small for him, but hug him nicely in the legs, making it easier to pull on and wear the thigh harnesses she’d also chosen, which means she's probably wearing the matching ones he’d bought her last week. She’d chosen his lavender sweater with the black hearts on it for him to wear under his jacket and vest as well as a choker with spikes on it.
He really should have her just pick out his outfits for him everyday. The entire ensemble was honestly one of the better outfits he’s worn.
“Alright alright, how do I look?” He smiles twirling around for her to take in the whole outfit.
“Bitchin’”
“You’re damn right. And look at you! You were made to dress punk El, that jacket with those cargo pants? I don’t know how you do it but you come up with the coolest outfits, Bug.” She preens under the complement, patting the stool in front of her for him to get situated so she can start applying his makeup. He’s settling in just as Max bounds through the front door, plopping down on the couch next to El to examine the makeup laying around her on the coffee table.
“This is gonna be so fun.” Max’s snickers picking up one of the brushes, El smiles at her, handing her the lavender eyeshadow palette and telling her to wait until El’s finished the eyeliner to smoke it around his eyes. He smiles at them, warmth tickling his lungs at the fact that El just gets to be a kid in moments like these. He hopes he can hang onto them and give her more. Be everything for her he never got growing up.
After his makeups done and he does El’s and her slicked back hair look she loves, he adds a softer look to Max that still keeps her feeling bad ass and their off. Stopping at the diner to grab their breakfast to go because the trip to the Mall is about an hour drive and they are bound and determined to get there as soon as possible.
Steve smiles softly at their quiet giggles in the back seat as they eat, drinking his coffee and humming along to Iron Maiden. He’d pulled Max to the side when El had run into the diner to go to the bathroom and enlisted her on his mission to make this the best outing they could, so that El could experience life as a 14 year old girl like she was meant to, and Max had lit up and explained that any Mall outing needed a movie montage worthy clothing extravaganza, and Steve wholeheartedly agreed.
Steve had not been prepared at how much energy Max and El would have as they ran through the mall. Stopping at every store and trying on at least one thing in each one. Steve's wallet was crying at how much he’d bought both girls, but the thankful way they’d thrown their arms around him more then made up for it.
“Steve, Steve can we get Ice cream before we leave?” El comes running up to him, having changed into one of her new jumpers she’d bought with a flurry of colorful butterflies on it. She’s not even waiting for an answer before both her and Max have ahold of each of his hands and is dragging him to Scoops Ahoy and ordering the most obnoxious sounding banana boat. He really hopes they don’t open one of these in the mall being built in Hawkins. The whole thing is just tacky .
Over all, Steve thinks the day was a massive success, Max and El still bouncing around the house when they get home. Going on and on about everything they’ve seen that day. Steve’s laying on the couch where he collapsed when he got home and didn’t move from when he hears Max laugh so loud she snorts and the girls come running into the living room.
“This is what you used to look like?” Max asks through wheezes. Holding up a polaroid of Steve from his freshman year Tommy had taken. He’s got a god awful gray polo that was a size to big on, and his hairs parted down the middle in an attempt to look suave, the photo taken about two days before he’s figured out the signature King Steve hair floof he’d done every day after.
“Yuck it up Mayfield. Ladies dug the look.” She snorts loudly, flipping the photo around to look at it again.
“This look? Ladies dug this look? Steve, you look like a square!” She’s yelling in her laughter and not for the first time that day Steve's heart swells with happiness at El’s equally loud laughter next to her best friend.
“If I was any shape it was a hexagon cause I was sexy Mayfield. You’re just jealous of all my swag.”
“Swag!” She yells the word before falling over into El, clutching her stomach and wheezing through her laughter, El giggling happily while leaning back into her.
Yea the day was definitely a success.

How would Hopper Handle being a dad to three kids (Jonathan, Will, El)?
Firstly, thank you for the question. I'll answer them in order of difficulty.
With Jonathan, he's practically an adult, so Hopper won't have to do much to actually "raise" him. I think the biggest thing Hop has to do is get Jonathan to trust him with his family. Trust that if Jonathan goes off to college, follows his dreams, that Joyce, Will, and El will be safe. That Hopper will take care of them. I think Jonathan still probably harbors some guilt from S1 and S2, when he wasn't around when bad things happened to Will (I might do a longer post on this later). So him putting his own needs to the side to protect his family has been his focus lately. Hopefully Hopper can help with that.
For El, Hopper already has some experience from Seasons 2 and 3, so I think they'll just fall back into their old routine. Well, partially anyways. It should be easier now with Joyce there to take some of the burden off. I mean, she's already been raising El this past year. So it should be easier for both of them actually. Hopper can let Joyce take care of the things that are typically mother/daughter related. And that should give him some time to devote to...
Will. This one could be trickier. There should be some basis of trust and gratitude here. Hop has saved Will's life multiple times. More than anything though, it'll be nice for Will to have a positive, adult, male role model in his life. Jonathan has tried his best, but he was a kid himself for most of it. Having a man he can look up to, that takes care of his family, will do Will worlds of good. The tricky part would be if/when Will comes out as gay. I'm confident that Hopper would be supportive though. Clumsy at first, yes, but supportive in the end. And luckily he has experience with his kid dating Mike Wheeler.

being hopper's oldest daughter (and el's older sister) would include...
pairings: dad!hopper x daughter!reader + little sister!el x big sister!reader
-saying your first cuss word at age 3
-being the original victim of the three inch rule
-coining the term "dad hugs" at age 5 because you loved when he literally engulfed you in his arms, but when he tried to call it a bear hug, you insisted "you're not a bear, you're daddy"
-reminding him whenever he was feeling down that you chose him over your mother for a reason, and stuck by that choice every day without a single regret
-scolding him for smoking too many cigarettes
-never forgetting the look on el's face the first time she heard you refer to her as "my little sister"
-complaining about your reputation in school as the chief's daughter
-hop suggesting you tell your classmates he'll arrest them for harassment if they ever singled you out for being his kid
-siding with el when he showed up late on halloween
-lots of hair ruffling. in your opinion, too much hair ruffling ("daaad! you couldn't have done that before i did my hair?")
-encouraging his relationship with joyce (“don’t be such a chicken, dad. just ask her out!”)
-you writing the grocery lists, him going out and doing the shopping (and usually forgetting at least one thing)
-"dad, haven't you learned to buy more than one box of eggos at a time by now?"
-having broken a nose or two in your life (it was a hopper family tendency, what could y’all say?)
-teaching el how to throw a punch, because "even though you have superpowers, you never know when you're going to need a good right hook"
-finding out about el and max's trip to the mall and being both horrified and impressed
-visiting hopper at the station just for him to see you and ask if you got arrested
-hop secretly running around investigating asking about everyone you talk to him about, especially boys
-doing el’s makeup for the snow ball and walking her in because she was nervous
-learning morse code so you could talk to el when she was at home and you weren’t
-adding bitchin' to your vocabulary as soon as you realized how much el loved saying it and hearing it
-hop calling out "where my girls at?" every night when he got home from work
-convincing hop to let el and mike go on their first formal date when she was still technically in hiding (which, in the end, resulted in you driving them 30 minutes away from home "just in case")
-watching miami vice as a lil family trio every week
-protecting el from bullies at school because no one was going to treat your little sister like that
-dumping out all his beer as a revenge plot when you were in a fight (which resulted in a lengthy grounding sentence)
-hearing all the town drama straight from the chief of police over family dinner almost every night, because if he couldn't rant to his girls, who could he rant to?
-having a full-blown sob-fest when you find out he had been alive and a prisoner in russia for 8 months •"you're so skinny. are you malnourished??" through the tears •him jokingly saying "who would've thought us two could survive without each other for so long?" and slightly panicking when it only made you cry harder •"dad, powell is the chief now. what about your job??"

Part 3
“So how do you know this is actually your biological child Munson?” Hopper asked sternly.
Joyce had driven them back to the cabin and was looking through the duffle bag left for Evelyn. She grimaced at the sharp acridic smells of cigarette smoke, must and other unidentified scents.
“The timing adds up.” Eddie shrugged, still coming to terms with the news himself.
“Sure but how do you know she didn’t just put your name on the birth certificate?”
“I know she is his daughter. They look alike.” El stated from the floor where she and Evelyn where playing with some blocks that Joyce had pulled out of storage.
Hopper groaned.
“I just don’t think we can be sure.” He rubbed his temples.
“Should we call social services or something? Isn’t that like abandonment?” Jonathan asked unhelpfully from the hallway.
“No. Absolutely not!” Eddie stated with a fire in his eyes. “Sorry, just no. She’s not going into foster care.” He sighed shakily trying to push away unwanted memories.
Joyce stand behind the couch and squeezed his shoulders gently. “It’s okay Eddie, she’s staying with us. With you. And we are here to help.”
He gave her a tired smile.
“Oh god. I have to call Wayne.” He buried his head in his hands, shaking again.
“When’s he off work?” Hop asked.
“2” Eddie sighed.
“I’m going to call and have him swing by here when he’s done alright?” Joyce asked. She picked up the phone with the go ahead.
Eddie was so damn thankful for Joyce. He really needed a real adult to help him figure things out and he was sure Wayne would help but he was worried about the initial conversation that was needed.
“Eddie,” El said. “Come read a book with us.”
Evelyn looked up at Eddie and smiled. He obliged and gently lowered himself to the floor careful of his still tender wounds.
“What will she call you?” El asked.
“What do you mean?” Eddie asked in confusion.
“You are her father. She can’t call you Eddie. Will she call you Dad or Daddy?” El inquired.
“I don’t know, I guess Daddy is fine.” He really hadn’t thought about it.
El nodded swiftly. “Your Daddy can read you a book Evie.”
“I like the nickname,” Eddie smiled.
“Okay Miss. Evie. Which book did you pick out?”
“Puppy book.” Evelyn smiled up at Eddie.
“Deddie wread book please.”
El and Joyce erupted into laughter at the adorable new nickname Eddie had just received.
“How could I possibly say no to that?” Eddie wheezed out a huff, heart melting.
“Okay sweetheart, The Poky Little Puppy. Oh I like this one already. What is that?” Eddie pointed to the page.
“Poky Puppy.” Evelyn grinned wiggling in joy.
“And what in the world is that?” Eddie gasped.
“Is that a dragon?” Eddie pointed to the small green lizard on the cover.
“Noooooo…” Evelyn giggled. “It’s a lizawrd.”
“A wizard? I don’t think wizards are green.” Eddie huffed.
Evie laughed even more. “No… lizawrd.”
“A lizard? Really?” Eddie looked at her with eyebrows furrowed, “If you say so. Let’s find out…”
Eddie opened the book and started reading with his little girl snuggled up beside him.
He discovered that reading children’s books wasn’t that different from DMing. It was all storytelling, and Eddie knew how to tell a damn good story.
Now he just needed to tell ones with less gore, fighting, and monsters.
Joyce smiled widely as she listened to the young man create a world for the little girl and snuggle with her. She was surprised at how good he was with her. She hadn’t expected him to be bad with her, but he was far surpassing her expectations of most parents she knew.

"Saturday morning, jumped out of bed and put on my best suit. Got in my car and raced like a jet all the way to you. Knocked on your door with my heart in my hands, to ask you a question, 'cause I know that you're an old-fashioned man. Yeah."
Billy was freshly graduated, working as a lifeguard whilst his girlfriend worked her own job, both saving up for their chance to ditch Hawkins and move to California. Sweet Cali. Billy was excited to show the love of his life around the place he called home. Though, physically, he left the salty ocean and windy beach behind, the place never truly left him.
You could see it in his eyes. The waves crashing in his blue orbs. He swore the scent had just barely clung to his belongings; the smell of the tangy air that followed a majority of the state. Working at a pool was the closest he got to the memory of California. Chlorine was most certainly not the salted ocean waters, but with the circumstances, he decided it'd do.
The way his face lit up whenever he talked about his home...it made Y/n more and more excited to see it. His girlfriend had grown up in Hawkins, stayed there her whole life. Never once did the Hoppers leave Hawkins.
But the second that was introduced to Billy, he knew it had to change.
Although they were saving for a big move, Billy had...other things in mind with what to do with his first large pay-check (or series, rather. Working as a lifeguard didn't pay well with just one check). He began to work more shifts to make up for the money he'd spent, and one day after calling in for a day off, he decided to put his plan into action.
"Billy, stop messing with the tie."
"It's annoying." Hands slapped away his attempts of adjusting the black silk tie.
"Well it won't stop being annoying if you keep fucking it up."
For the first time in a long time, Neil Hargrove was calm. Not happy, not amused, not pissed off for some unjust reason- just calm. He wasn't wreaking havoc and he wasn't being an asshole to his son. Billy hadn't seen this side of his dad in quite some time, in fact, he thought something important was going on and he was about to fuck it all up. And then, Susan retreated to the living room with a camera and a freshly ironed suit.
"You're not putting me in that."
"And who asked for your opinion?" Neil deflected with a raised brow. One heavy sigh later and Billy was leaving the bathroom, dawning the whole black and white getup.
Susan clasped her hands over her mouth, a tear leaving her eye, "You look so handsome! Just like your dad!"
Billy rolled his eyes, "Great."
However, his careless attitude was swept under the rug when the blue Camaro pulled up to the police station, interrupting a clearly distressed Chief Hopper bickering with his daughter. Billy had to get himself together before stepping out of the car, jaw slack after seeing the beauty he got to call his date.
"Hello Mr-"
"Don't even try play nice with me, Hargrove. She's not going anywhere with you. End of story." Hopper kept his eyes trained on the blond, body tense like a snake preparing to strike it's prey.
Y/n grabbed Billy's arm, slowly directing him to the car, "And in the sequel, we find out I am going with Billy. End of that story."
"There is no 'sequel.' The writer got drunk and lazy." She paused, turning to face her father who stood tall, arms crossed and face unamused.
"So his daughter picked up where her father left off, and then the sequel was published and the two lived happily ever after, the end."
While her dad attempted to search for a line that would better hers and force her to stay, she pushed Billy toward the driver's side and slid into the car as fast as she could, rolling down the window as Billy started it up. "Bye! I'll be back before midnight!"
The two drove off toward the school, leaving behind a trail of dust and very, very, pissed off Hopper.
Prom was better than Billy thought it would be. He didn't want to go at first, but after Max found out and spoke to her mom about it (the little redhead a cupid-in-the-making), Neil pushed him to go (as he was "doing something else besides being a lazy-no-good rebel"). It was then that he called Y/n and asked if she'd be going.
The suit came in handy. Clashing with his rocker aesthetic, he put it back on once more. The once-annoying tie proved to be somewhat okay in the end.
Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life? Say yes, say yes, 'cause I need to know. You say I'll never get your blessing "till the day I die, tough luck my friend, but the answer is no!"
Why you gotta be so rude? Don't you know I'm human too? Why you gotta be so rude? I'm gonna marry her anyway. Marry that girl, marry her anyway! Marry that girl, yeah, no matter what you say! Marry that girl, and we'll be a family! Why you gotta be so rude?
With a deep breath, he ran-over the conversation in his head once more. Like a script for an actor, he had thought of every possible outcome and every possible line for him to face it with. He almost chickened out as his fist rose to the door, but it was too late, for his knuckles rapped against it before he realized he was even knocking.
El opened the door, eyes wide when she saw the familiar mullet and button-down. "Papa..." She muttered as she backed away and out of view.
Hopper traded places with her, his lazy expression sobering up instantaneously, replaced with a grumpy scowl. "Hargrove."
"Mr. Hopper, sir."
"What are you doing on my front porch?"
He swallowed roughly, palms sweaty against his sides. "I was wondering if I could talk to you."
"You seem to be doing just that right now, Hargrove." Hop crossed his arms and clenched his jaw.
Well, this was certainly not something Billy had thought of. He was on panic mode internally, attempting to find any response that could save his hide and accomplish what he set out to do. Unfortunately, the word-vomit button seemed to be misplaced under the button labeled "help".
"I'd like to marry your daughter, sir."
Hop's eyes grew just as big in size as El's had when she opened the door. He choked on his own surprise, coughing it off, then glaring at the boy in front of him. "Over my dead body, Hargrove. If that's all, I'd strongly advise you to get off of my fucking porch while you're still alive."
I hate to do this, you leave no choice; can't live without her. Love me or hate me, we will be boys- standing at that alter. And we will fly away, to another galaxy, you know. You know she's in love with me, she will go anywhere I go-
"Billy, he's just stubborn."
"No, no, I don't think he likes me."
Y/n sighed, rubbing her boyfriend's back. He hadn't told her of his proposal plans, only that Hop seemed to have it out for him. "It'll take time, but he'll warm up to you!"
"It's been how many years since he's met me?"
"To be fair, your reputation wasn't doing you any good until now..."
"It's not like that was fucking obvious." He slouched further down in the front seat of his Camaro. To Billy, all hope was lost. If he couldn't get Hopper to give him his blessing, he was sure he'd lose his goddamned mind.
Y/n frowned. Her frown flipped around as an idea popped into her head, her lips finding Billy's knuckles and quirking his attention. "Even if he never likes you, I'm not going anywhere."
Billy laughed softly, "he'll fucking kill me if you go against him."
"Eh, that's only if he can catch us."
"You're out of your fucking mind, Y/n Hopper."
"I know."
The rest of the night was spent in the Camaro, of course, doing one of Billy's favorite pastimes. By the time the sun rose, Billy was sneaking a kiss to a giggling Y/n before dropping from her window in the cabin and running to his car, parked far enough that Hop or El wouldn't notice. He blew her one more kiss, which she pretended to catch, then he broke into a sprint.
Maybe, he thought, just maybe; there was still a chance.
His knuckles hit the door again, shifting on his feet nervously. It swung open to reveal Hopper, an unimpressed look bringing no surprise Billy's way. It was quite expected, honestly.
"What." His tone made it clear he wasn't up for fucking around.
"Mr. Hopper, if you just give me one chance to prove to you that-"
"No, no, no, no, no. Let me make it very clear to you that I want you to have nothing to do with my daughter whatsoever. No marriage, no friendship, I don't even approve of you guys fucking or whatever-"
"We're in a serious relationship, sir. It's nothing like you think it is."
This made Hop laugh. He continued to do so, holding his stomach, until he realized Billy was unamused. "Oh, you're serious?... My answer is still no, Hargrove. My answer will always be no. Go find someone else's daughter's heart to break. You're not hurting mine."
"It's not like-"
Before he could even get the words out, he was met with a door in his face. Turned down, again.
Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life? Say yes, say yes, 'cause I need to know. You say I'll never get your blessing "till the day I die, tough luck my friend, 'cause the answer's still no!"
Why you gotta be so rude? Don't you know I'm human too? Why you gotta be so rude? I'm gonna marry her anyway. Marry that girl, marry her anyway! Marry that girl, yeah, no matter what you say! Marry that girl, and we'll be a family! Why you gotta be so rude, rude?
Again, again, and again, Billy incessantly pleaded with Hopper. Different tactics were all met with the same answer; rejection.
He held up a sign outside the cabin, only for Hopper to close the curtain and chuckle as he sipped his coffee.
He asked at the door again, only for Hop to threaten to give him a black eye (which was met with "aren't you the sheriff? Isn't that illegal?").
He raced past the police station, Max leaning out the window with another sign, only for Hop to threaten them with holding cells.
He even went as far as to ask Max and El to help, but Hopper had none of that, and sent Max home with a rant full of nos.
However, if Jim Hopper thought any of it would get it into Billy's head that getting his blessing was just not happening- he was as wrong as Nancy when she claimed not to have feelings for Jonathan.
Billy had another plan in mind, and this one was impossible to say no to.
Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life? Say yes, say yes, 'cause I need to know. You say I'll never get your blessing "till the day I die, tough luck my friend- but no still means no!"
"Hopper." Billy stood before his desk, interrupting his nice date with a delicious doughnut, and earning a very annoyed glare. "I got Miss Byer's blessing. Aren't you two a thing?"
"You son of a-"
"I got Eleven's too."
"Hargrove, I'm gonna-"
"Before you cuss me out, I think you should know that I've got a stable job, an interview with a mechanic so I have a job when the pool closes for the winter, and I've got a house on the market I'm looking at. I'm devoted to your daughter and she's devoted to me. You may not like me, but I think you're a great dad, better than the one I was unfortunately stuck with. You raised a strong and amazing woman. She's incredible and I admit, she deserves better than me-"
"You don't have to say that twice." Hopper huffed, crossing his arms.
"I know she deserves so much better than me, I'm surprised she's even with me too. But she loves me, and I think you can see that. I love her too. I would never, in a million years, break her heart."
Jim stayed silent for a few minutes. The silence brought uneasiness to Billy, but that was intentional on Hopper's behalf. He finally piped up with a cough, clearing his throat, before his piercing eyes met Billy's blue orbs.
"I'll hold you to that, Hargrove."
Why you gotta be so rude?
Bonus:
(after the wedding)
"What was that about a no?" Billy quipped with his infamous smirk.
"You're lucky I'm sheriff, Hargrove."
Why you gotta be so rude?

Monopoly
Tumblr media
Pairings: Eleven + Mike Wheeler
Summary: Post-Battle of Starcourt fix-it fic. Hopper is alive, the cabin gets repaired and Monopoly is played - the Party has a winner in Monopoly.
Tumblr media
Mike and El were sat in one of the ambulances that had come at a speeding pace towards Starcourt Mall after the battle with the Mind Flayer (constructed using the flayed people). Will was also for his mom to come back from shutting the gate (again, no thanks to the Russians), as well as Hopper.
3 cars came flying into the mall’s parking lot. One belonging to Joyce Byers (which made both Will and Jonathan perk up), after Joyce’s came Karen Wheeler’s (after she found out that her son and daughter were at Starcourt Mall, by Joyce, she came zooming down with Holly in the passenger seat - who wants to see her big brother and sister), and the final car was Claudia Henderson’s (which contained Claudia herself, Mr and Mrs Sinclair and Susan Hargrove - Max’s mom).
Tumblr media
“MOM!” Will shouted as Joyce clambered out of the car, and he went running as fast as his legs could possibly take him, and went tumbling into her arms (they hugged each other as tightly as they possibly could, not really caring if they were suffocating because for now, the Upside Down was over).
“We did it, baby, the gate the Russians opened, it’s closed now,” Joyce said into her son’s ear, running her hand repeatedly through his hair, thankful that her baby boy was safe.
Tumblr media
From the same car, stumbled the Chief of Police, Jim Hopper, El’s dad. “Hop,” she sighed, pushing herself out of Mike’s grip (Mike gave a little whine, not wanting to let her go, he really wanted to call her his girlfriend again, but he will give her some time after this awful battle that almost saw her dead). “HOP!” She exclaimed, running to him with a grin on her face.
He was dressed in some strange uniform (as was Joyce), but right now, it didn’t matter, because her dad was here, and was hugging her tightly and warmly that reminded her of when he read her a chapter of her story and tucked her into bed. Warm, snug, home. “I’m okay, kid, It’s over now,” Hopper says into her ear, one hand on her back, and the other in the frizzy mop of hair on her head.
“I love you, dad,” El said into his chest, which did make its way to Hopper’s ears and a tear ran down his cheek. This is what it meant to be a father, he had it with Sara, and now he has it with El - and he swore to high heaven that as long as they kept fighting, he wouldn't let anything tear them apart.
Tumblr media
Mike watched as El reunited with her father, he didn’t really see Karen climb out of the station wagon and took Holly out. When the youngster spotted her older brother in one of the ambulances.
“MIKEY!” Holly exclaimed, running as fast as her legs would take her, eating up the distance between herself and her brother. Mike had enough of reaction time, to ditch the shock blanket and prepare himself for the attack of Holly Wheeler.
"Hey, Holls, I'm okay," Mike was able to pick Holly up (as she practically weighs nothing) and sits his baby sister on his hip. The youngest Wheeler has started sobbing on Mike's shoulder, and he can't help but feel bad for being so crappy the past couple of days (it has really taken a toll on him after El 'dumped' him).
"Mikey," Holly said again, clinging to his neck, with her face shoved into the crook of his neck.
"Michael! Thank goodness you're ok!" Karen exclaimed, her perfect hair bouncing as she jogs over and runs her hand through her son's untameable hair.
Mike sighs, knowing his mother is going to be a bit overprotective and 'mother hen-ish'. He gave her a smile (he would later understand when he has two children of his own, with El, that he feels what his mother feels).
Mike keeps smiling at his mother, as she fusses over the bandage on his forehead, and tries to clean up the remaining spot of blood, cradling his sister in his arms, when Hopper walks over with El tightly latched onto him.
"Wheeler, a word," Hopper says to him, and before Mike could even set Holly on the ground, El let go of her father, and stood behind Mike, and smiled at the little girl.
"Holly, mom, this is El, my..." Mike trailed off, not knowing what to call El, after she 'dumped his ass', and they had a short unspoken conversation.
"Girlfriend," she finished, making Mike smile happily (he got her back!). Karen gasped happily, holding her chest where her heart would be.
Karen reached over and rested her hand on her son's shoulder. "My baby got a girlfriend!" She was so happy.
Mike gently handed over his little sister into El's arms, Holly whined and when El started pulling faces at Holly, which made the girl laugh happily. Mike gave Hopper a sharp nod, and they walked away.
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry for being so crappy, and probably the biggest asshole that you’ve probably met, and if you want to stop me from seeing El, I’ll understand,” Mike said, as soon as they were out of earshot of the three females in his life.
Hopper sighs, and took the Russian hat off his head. “No, I should have dealt with it differently, it wasn’t fair on either of you. However, we still need boundaries,” Hopper stated, the older man looked over Mike’s shoulder and watched as El ingrained herself into Mike’s family, as she tipped Holly upside down, earning squeals and giggles of delight from the small school girl.
“Boundaries, ok, that I can do,” Mike nodded, accepting that El’s father didn’t want to die this early of a heart attack courtesy of him and El...
Tumblr media
- 3 weeks later -
The cabin was somewhat habitual, despite the holes in the roof and sides (but it was home), and the Hoppers - along with the Party helped rebuild the cabin - and each time that they did, they brought new things to keep EI entertained.
Max brought her some old comic books (including Wonder Woman and X-Men, because she thought El was a lot like Jean Grey, a name she had already heard Dustin say) as well as cassette tapes - warning her about the tape player ‘eating’ the tapes - which earned her a confused and frightened look, and Max explained how El would have to stop it at once, because it would destroy the tape, and music couldn’t play the music anymore, and she would have to use a pencil to wind it back in (Max demonstrated, and allowed El to practice in case it happened.
The boys brought some of their comic books and old board games that they didn’t play with anymore - which included Monopoly, courtesy of Lucas.
Tumblr media
Mike and El were sat on her bedroom floor and had pieces of Monopoly money and the pieces scattered about a bit, El had read the instructions (cover to cover, even though Mike told her that it wasn’t necessary). But the thing that surprised him the most, was how well she was doing.
Mike rolled the dice and got a 4, moving him to Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard. Which was owned by El... and her hotel...
“Shit!” Mike sighed, as he rather quickly running out of money, and figured he would need to declare for bankruptcy before too long.
El giggled loudly, “Pay up, Wheeler!” She had picked up calling people by their last name from Steve, who spent some time with her when Hopper was pulling a late shift at the station.
The knock was sounded on the cabin door, and Steve got up to answer, as El’s powers had yet to come back. Hopper walked in, and before he could say anything to Steve, he saw El’s bedroom door shut and went crazy.
“3 inches! KEEP THE DOOR OPEN THREE-” Hopper went storming into El’s room, expecting his daughter to be attached by the lips to the middle Wheeler child, but saw them sitting on the floor playing Monopoly - a game from his own childhood.
“Are you ok, dad?” El asked the dice in her hand, looking over her shoulder at her father. Mike reached up and paused the music playing from El’s tape player, cutting Madonna singing about angels?
Hopper blinked repeatedly, not seeing what he expected to, and nodded, drawing himself out of his head. “Yeah, kid, I’m okay,” El nodded, her mess of hair shaking around her head. “Who’s winning?” He asks, and El’s smile brightens.
“I want to pin it on ‘beginner’s luck’, but she’s killing me! She owns almost half of the spots on the board!” Mike exclaimed, running a hand through his hair which was currently being controlled the warmness of Hawkins.
Hopper smiles happily at his daughter, as he presses a hand to her shoulder, and looking down at the board, before looking into her eyes. “Show him how Hopper’s win,” he said, a smirk blossoming on his face, and showed it to Mike.
“He’ll have to de-cl-ar ba-nk-rup-cy soon!” She sounded out her words (sounding like a young toddler first learning to speak, but Hopper and Mike couldn’t be prouder of her. Hopper’s face alone was the face of an extremely proud father).

2 times you and Hopper almost kissed and the 1 time you did
Tumblr media
word count: 1k a/n: idk how good this is requested by: @eveysstuff masterlist
3.
Your car roared to life as you quickly pulled out of your driveway, preparing to go to the police station to visit your friend, the Chief of Police, Hopper. Well, it wasn’t a sporadic visit, he called you because he forgot his lunch, so you made him a sandwich. You said yes because you take any excuse to talk to him. Not much trouble was stirred up in the town, so you know that he’s still at the station pouring over boring documents, and not retaining any of its knowledge. You don’t know why you care so much about the man, you had been friends for quite some time and had grown close to Eleven. She needed a female role model in her life, and you were always there. Even if he needed a sandwich.
Pulling into the precinct, you exited the car a brown lunch bag in hand. Flo waved and sent a sweet grin your way as you let yourself into Hopper’s office. The intimidating man sat behind his desk, scanning the papers documenting a recent DUI. You softly knocked, a small smile forming on my face, he looked at you, his eyes lighting up, “Sandwich?!”
You exhaled and held up the bag, “Sandwich.”
He jumped up and ran to you like a little kid on Christmas, “Yes! Thank you! You’re a god-damn lifesaver!”, he hugged you tightly. You stepped back slightly, shocked at the hug, you softly patted his back. He pulled back, frowning, “I’m sorry. I-uh overstepped, just haven’t had a meal since last night.”
“It’s alright, Hop.” You awkwardly stepped back, hitting the wall.
You blushed, chuckling softly. Hopper glanced down at your lips, and as you both leaned in, Flo burst in holding a stack of files, “Oh! I am so sorry! Just, keep doing what you’re doing.” She quickly looked down exiting the office. Your smile dropped as you shuffled away, dropping the lunch bag on his desk.
“Bye Hopper, enjoy your lunch.”
2.
You and Hopper hadn’t spoken of that day, it seemed best to leave it in the past. But on this night, as you sat in his cabin, next to El, explaining to her the rules of ‘go fish’. “So, if you don’t have the card the person asked for, you say ‘go fish’” she pointed to herself as you nodded, “and they pick up a card.”
You had been teaching El for a few minutes, she was a little slower but it was no issue. You smiled at El, she let out a breath, smiling back at you, “You got it, hon!” Hopper stood at the counter, eyes twinkling as he watched his two favorite people interact. You were so gentle with her and took extra time she needed to understand things which not many gave to her. He was enamored with the way you moved, spoke, and lived. And as much as Hopper didn’t want to admit it, he was falling in love. And if he is lucky enough maybe you love him as well.
Eleven stood up announcing she was going to the bathroom, when she walked out Hopper sat on the floor next to you, groaning as he sat down, “Wow, El is really aging you Hop.”
He chuckled, “Yeah, she really runs me ragged.” he looked down at the ground awkwardly, “You’re wonderful with her. Thank you, for helping me. It really means a lot.”
You smiled crookedly, “Oh, it’s nothing, I really care about you guys. Plus, you’re the really wonderful one for taking her in. She’s a good kid, and you’re a good dad.”
“Thanks, you’re a god send.” The two of you had become much closer, almost subconsciously and as you two leaned in…
“Are we gonna play?” El said excitedly as she walked into the living room. You and Hopper jerked backward.
“Yeah, we can play now.” Your heart deflated a little but El being so excited made you happy. You could only hope Hopper felt the same way.
1.
“Want another?”
“Sure, I like drowning my sorrows in beer with you.”
He chuckled, “It’s much more fun to drink with someone else than with the tv.”
“I’m sure it can’t keep up.” You looked up at the man in front of you and took a small sip of your beer, “Where’s El tonight?”
“She and Max are having a sleepover, though I never trust her going out with those kids.” he frowned, his tired dad was showing, “I don’t like that Mike kid.”
“I know, you’ve only been telling me that since the day you met him.”
He threw his hands up in the air, “Am I supposed to like my daughters boyfriend? ‘Cause I don’t think I am.”
“Well, it seems like he really cares for her. And he’s really nice.”
“Aha! That’s what he wants you to think, then one day they’ll have sex, she’ll be pregnant, and he’ll leave.”
Your eyes went wide, “I hardly believe that’s going to happen, plus she doesn’t know what sex is.” you rolled your eyes, “I had to explain kissing to the girl!”
“That was you?! Why would you corrupt her?”
“She asked and I answered! You told me to answer her questions!”
“Well I didn’t mean that one!”
“You didn’t specify!”
“But-!” You cut him off, grabbing his collar roughly and kissing him. It was everything you had dreamed of, and surprisingly soft, like he was worried about breaking you. You pulled away, your gaze cast down as his fanned over your cheeks. “Wow. Nobody barged in on us this time.”
You giggled, “Yea. That was nice.”
“It definitely was.”

ok there’s a lot i could say but my Absolute favorite thing about hopper is how much he cares about kids... like hopper is not in a place to be taking in el but he does it anyway because he Needs to help her yknow he just can’t sit by knowing this little girl is out there alone he has to leave food for her and make a home for her and he goes to extreme lengths to do whatever he thinks will keep her safe... he risks his life breaking into the lab and walking straight into the upside down to rescue will, he goes out of his way to comfort jonathan in s1, and GOD the way he held mike in s2 while mike was cussing him out and hitting him...
what gets me about hopper is that like. he could have been this guy completely driven by his past trauma yknow he Could just care about keeping these kids safe as a way of making up for not being able to do anything to help his kid like it could be a personal ego sort of thing. but it’s not. he doesn’t Just care about keeping them physically safe, he wants them to be happy, too, even if he’s not as good at that part of parenting. he still tries! he knows el’s favorite foods and he compliments her little punk makeover and he tries to let her see her boyfriend all she wants even though he hates it (though he eventually cracks and fucks up the whole situation lmao) and he lets el have her little sleepovers with max freely. it’s just like... so often parenthood in real life and in fiction is just an exercise in egotism and the fact that hopper KNOWS he’s not the best dad but he keeps trying every day because he wants to give el and the other kids the kind of father and protector they deserve... god. i just love him.
least favorite thing about them
it would be easy to say my least favorite thing about hopper is how he can be pretty selfish or short-tempered or jealous but like. it’s honestly those flaws that make him more real and loveable to me ksjdnckdmn so this is hard.
i guess my least favorite thing about hopper is his stubbornness? like it’s one thing to be short-sighted or insecure but it’s another to be unwilling to listen to other people and question yourself and talk things out. he got called out for it in s3 though and i get the feeling his arc in s4 is Really gonna challenge his worst traits, so i’m not too mad about it.
favorite line
god there are So many and the black hole scene is... a revelation. but it’s hard to pick a single line from that instead of just the whole conversation sdkcnm so i’m gonna have to go with his line from s3, when he and el are talking in the mall and el says “i can fight,” and hopper says “Better than any of us. But I need you safe.”
it’s just. god it’s simple but it just shows how much he knows his daughter yknow? he knows that el doesn’t like feeling incapable and he DOES know that she’s strong and she can fight, and he makes that clear. he tells her explicitly, yeah, i know you can fight, i believe in you and i trust your assessment of your own abilities, but i’m your father and i need you safe. it’s “i love you” and “i believe in you” and “you’re an incredible kid” and “you’re the most important thing in the world to me” all in one and it fucks me up.
brOTP
if bob was still alive i’d say him and bob skjdnckn but as it is... idk about brotp but i really like the dynamic between hopper and owens i think their sort of like. half hostile half friendly exchange of favors is just super fun.
OTP
Tumblr media
nOTP
honestly as far as i know there’s no hopper ships really floating around in the fandom besides jopper dkjncmnc i don’t even know what to put here... my man is a one woman kind of guy
random headcanon
whenever el asks him a remotely hard question about like politics or religion or sex or economics he’s always like hm good question i don’t have time to answer that one right now i uh i just remembered i promised joyce i’d help her with something but i’ll tell you as soon as i get back :) and then he goes to melvald’s and he’s like heyyy joyce got a question for ya :)
he never actually ends up saying what joyce tells him to say but just talking to her makes him feel better about it <3
unpopular opinion
i think i’ve said this a dozen times but i don’t think hopper was that bad in s3 like. yeah he was a dick but the narrative clearly wasn’t on his side and he was the butt of the joke yknow plus his s4 arc is definitely gonna make him change in a big way. so i don’t have that much of a problem with it besides like just thinking he should have been more worried about the kids once he and joyce found out that some shit was going on in hawkins again.
song i associate with them
literally i have too many there are like three i want to say right now... i’ve talked about hopper and you never even called me by my name by david allan coe before (“i’ll hang around as long as you will let me/and i never minded standing in the rain” ...s2 jopper) and i’ve also talked about him and one bourbon, one scotch, one beer by john lee hooker (blues) OR one bourbon, one scotch, one beer by george thorogood and the destroyers (rock n roll medley between hooker’s version and another hooker song, house rent boogie). the thorogood’s my personal favorite version, but they’re so different they’re both worth listening to and they might as well be totally different songs.
anyway i’ve said that all before so i’ll give u all a NEW one and say jim dandy by black oak arkansas!! just to like preface it IS a cover and the original’s by lavern baker but i picked the black oak arkansas version because it’s a lot more wild and i feel like it matches hopper’s Vibe better. it’s a really goofy kinda nonsense song but the lyric “i’m dandy the kind of guy/who can’t stand to see a little girl cry” just makes it impossible for me to listen to it without thinking of hop <3
favorite picture of them
idk if this counts but it’s this screenshot of a tiktok where stranger things is playing on the big screen at a club and hopper’s watching his daughter die while everyone in the club is partying
Tumblr media
but if that doesn’t satisfy u i’ll give a bonus

Deconstructing Season 3 Jim Hopper
Note1 - I wrote this before the 2020.02.14 "Stranger Things 4 | From Russia with love" teaser. I'm glad they didn't try to drag out the "is Hopper really dead" question - he's 100% back! Note2 - Ok, now that so many of us are inside and ST4 is delayed, I'm going to finally post this and hope some folks find it interesting. Note3 - 6+ months later, I'm finally posting this for real, enjoy! :)
Please Read * !!! MASSIVE S3 SPOILERS !!! * I am a huge fan of Stranger Things and Jim Hopper. * This is a critical analysis of season 3 Jim Hopper, aka s3-Hop. * I would never want to sour anyone's enjoyment of the show or s3-Hop. * Please skip this essay if you enjoy s3-Hop! * If you viewed season 3 and thought "Hopper sure was different" or "Hopper wasn't enjoyable like in s1 and s2" then please read on!
uber-TL;DR * s3-Hopper was unbelievably and (for me) unenjoyably different from s1/s2 * for s4, my hope is this extreme character shift is acknowledged by Hopper to Mike, Eleven, and Joyce
longer-TL;DR There were many changes in Stranger Things with season 3: the mall, the bright color pallet, the love-quadrangle pitting El/Max vs Mike/Lucas, Dustin splitting off from the boys to join the Scoops Troop, and the campy, Scooby-Doo-esque Russian base plot. I can accept these changes and enjoy many of their elements.
But s3 brought one massive change that was not a new character, location, nemesis, or team combo: I felt Jim Hopper's character change was simply unbelievable and unenjoyable.
Sadly, I may be in a tiny minority that does not speak up or that critical comments about a beloved show get "black holed" by show boosters on social media. Many ST fans were sad and angry that Hopper appears to have died and the letter reading at the end of s3 was very dramatic and moving. So analysis, and especially criticism, of s3-Hop is frequently down-voted or not liked and thus not socialized.
This is an attempt to collect the thoughts of one very unhappy s1/s2-Hopper fan about s3-Hop. I hope readers will enjoy the long detailed analysis (sorry it is so long!) and I look forward to any comments and feedback.
FWIW, I'm a big Stranger Things fan and David Harbour is a great actor (even in s3) and a Good person IRL. I loved s1/s2 Jim Hopper and how he was written in the official book Darkness on the Edge of Town.
Here are some collected and reformatted writings I've done on Hopper and his s3 change. My fave ST character is Eleven so s3-Hop becoming so different and unenjoyable is particularly jarring for me.
s3-Hop was so different from s1/s2-Hop as to make it seem like he is a new character. Not only that, but I did not enjoy this new character who acts: * anxious * whiny * selfish * sarcastic * self-entitled * super-violent
Recall Hopper's pre-s3 history from s1, s2, and the official book Darkness on the Edge of Town: * volunteered for the military at 18 (not drafted) * 3 years combat in Vietnam, awarded Bronze Star * 2 years as a Hawkins policemen, marries, has a daughter * 6 years in New York City as a homicide detective * after his daughter dies, hits the bottle/pills, gets divorced * back in Hawkins as Chief of Police and dating women * goes into the Upside Down and literally brings Will back to life with Joyce * takes Eleven in, she runs away, they each apologize * Hop protects Eleven while she unloads at maximum to fend off the Mind Flayer and close the Gate * El goes to the Snow Ball dance and Mike comes over for 6 months to be with her (and smooch!)
Now look at s3-Hop - a very brief s3 timeline: * he's anxious, has no gravitas or authority - he gets advice from Joyce on El/Mike * the evening of s3e1, s3-Hop writes about "emotions" and how he's upset about change * Then s3-Hop continues writing wise words about life that are all read in s3e8 * AFTER writing why he's upset and these wise words, s3-Hop proceeds to act like a mega-jerk * he is gleeful when Eleven is upset that Mike is not coming over * s3-Hop bizarrely thinks whining to Joyce will make her like him * WORST OF ALL, s3-Hop does not say "daughter", "kid", "Eleven", or "El" from s3e2-s3e7
Hopper went from a mega-over-protective dad in s2 who was able to legally adopt Eleven right before the Snow Ball to a jarringly different character in s3. I can see s3-Hop making bad judgments and behaving badly but just not in this anxious/silly/immature way. Why not have him be brooding and angry? That would be consistent with s1/s2. I fear the writers wanted a whacky/silly/goofy characterization for s3-Hop so that's what we got instead.
I can not stress this point enough: Hopper went from being El's loving, protective parent to forgetting about her once he broke her and Mike apart.
At the start of s3e2, Hopper watching El being upset and storming into her room because she missed Mike, his smiling while eating cereal, and then gleefully singing while going to work is when I was broke and I thought: This is not my Hopper.
s3 Hopper and Eleven then Hopper forgets Eleven - an episodic timeline:
e1 - Hopper is anxious and unnerved by Mike visiting Eleven daily since it reduces s3-Hop's time with El e1 - Hopper lies to Mike about his Grandma being sick and then frightens him into not coming over
e2 - When Eleven is upset the next day about Mike not appearing, Hopper is joyful e2 - Note, the song played while s3-Hop is gleeful at Eleven's separation from Mike is the same one that was used when s2-Hop took El into his cabin and started cleaning it up. What a terrible ruination of a wonderful, charming moment from s2. When I hear "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" now I just think of how unhappy El was and how uncaring s3-Hop was of her feelings after he chased Mike away.
e3 - Hopper drives home drunk and enters the cabin yelling angrily only to burst in on El and Max with no Mike; s3-Hop is very happy e3 - Note, s3-Hop wrote in his letter the night before that he missed spending time with El so his accepting Max with El at the cabin is inconsistent with what he wrote.
e4 - Hop adventures with Joyce (no mention of Eleven)
e5 - Hop, Joyce, and now Alexei road trip on the way to Illinois e5 - Hop does not mention El but at the gas station Joyce is worried and calls Karen: JOY - Oh, hey, Karen, it's Joyce. Yeah, I... I'm just checking on Will. At the movies?
e6 - Alexei describes how the Russians are re-opening the Gate and Joyce quickly gets up: HOP - Where are you going? JOY - To call our children. e6 - Note, Joyce said "our children" so she is also worried for El while an indifferent Hop drinks vodka with Murray e6 - Hop calls the feds and afterwards sits down and lights a cigarette, then: JOY - So, now what? HOP - Now, we, uh... we wait. JOY - How long do we wait? HOP - As long as it takes. JOY - How can you just sit there being calm? HOP - I am not calm! JOY - Our kids are in danger! HOP - You said they were at the festival! JOY - Which is, like, ten minutes from the gate! HOP - What are you doing? Joyce? HOP - What are you doing? JOY - [she calls the feds again pressing them to hurry] e6 - Note, s3-Hop talks here (and in most of s3) with various combinations of sarcasm, exasperation, indifference, and irritation. Just hearing his tone is so unpleasant and jarringly different from s1/s2-Hop.
e7 - in the car ride home, Hopper sarcastically ridicules Joyce about her being concerned about the kids: HOP - Oh! Wait, that's right! We're on our way to rescue our children from the big, bad Fourth of July celebration! JOY - You know what, if you can't handle this, then just turn around and drop me off first. HOP - What are you gonna do? You gonna walk back to Hawkins? JOY - I will do anything if it gets me away from you!
e8 - FINALLY Hopper arrives at the Mall and holds Eleven while she drinks a soda and rests her wounded leg e8 - Inexplicably, Joyce agrees to go on a date with Hop before the climax when he disappears
Why did the Stranger Things writers change Jim Hopper so much and so negatively in s3?
I think the writers want us to enjoy (or experience in my case) a new, goofy, ha-ha, funny version of Hopper who: * can't parent a teenage girl dating a boy, * is chasing Joyce for a date and then a relationship while she is still grieving the loss of Bob, and * despite acting like a jerk "sacrifices" himself in the end.
Then, to cap the season off, we get gut punched emotionally by Eleven reading s3-Hop's letter.
The writers likely thought the viewers would fall into two groups: * s3-Hop likers who enjoy this new s3-Hop would be upset at his "death" and moved to tears by the letter * s3-Hop dislikers who were annoyed by s3-Hop would flip to likers because of his "sacrifice" and feel guilty so they are also moved to tears by the letter
But remember: the timing of s3-Hop writing the letter about emotions with sagely advice. He wrote it the end of s3e1, after getting advice from Joyce at the store and just before lying to and threatening Mike to break him up with El. I don't think the writers thought viewers would catch this since the letter is so dramatically read (awesome performances by David and Millie) way at the end of the season in s3e8 after s3-Hop disappeared.
Why did s3-Hop act so different from s1/s2 and so badly if he can write so openly and wisely in s3e1 about emotions in the letter?
Why does this dramatic character transition occur? * s1/s2-Hop - bad temper, apathetic, lackadaisical with a good heart and over-protective of Eleven * s3-Hop - anxious, whiny, sarcastic, immature, self-entitled, selfish and mocking of Joyce for worrying about the kids including El
The breaker with s3-Hop for me was his complete turn around regarding Eleven. For s3e1 his only interest was stopping Mike from coming over and taking up El's time which he wanted for himself. Once the breakup was achieved he was very happy despite El's obvious upset.
Note, after breaking up El/Mike we never see s3-Hop make Eggo extravaganzas or watch a western with Eleven like he said he yearned for in the letter. Nor does he mention it to Joyce after breaking El and Mike apart. He read El's note on the fridge and proceeded to adventure with Joyce, all the while whiny to her about wanting a relationship.
Joyce on three occasions showed concerned and called someone about "Will", "our children", and "Our kids" and finally she said to Hop "I will do anything if it gets me away from you" because of his mocking her concern. (That was my favorite line in s3! - Joyce is so awesome)
After breaking up Mike and Eleven, from e4 to e7 Hopper did not show concern or caring about his adopted daughter. It was not until s3e8 in the Mall when Hop is seen holding El while she sips a soda and later he talks to her and is loving and supportive.
Is this Jim Hopper from s2 who was an over-protective, super-loving father to Eleven? Does Mike coming over and using most of El's time turn this decorated Vietnam combat veteran, who was a 6 year NYC homicide detective and current Chief of Police into an anxious, shrill father who can't think straight?
Why not have Hopper react to wanting more time with Eleven and wanting to date Joyce like the normal s1/s2-Hop we know and love?
I blame the writers from wanting s3-Hop to have an arc from nervous/unhinged to "sacrificing himself" and then the letter being read.
I think the s3-Hop character change was done so we'd be gut punched when he "died" and then the letter was read. And there's the additional goal of getting Hopper to fit in with the "summer of love" theme of s3 with him breaking up a love pairing with El/Mike and pursuing his own love with Joyce.
But the timing of when Hop wrote the letter just doesn't make any sense because of how he acted later. Additionally, if s3-Hop can not follow the life advice he wrote down, why does he act badly in such a different way then when he acted badly in s1/s2?
Because of this extreme character change I sadly can not watch s3-Hop anymore without being upset. It's just so unbelievable and unenjoyable.
Did Sarah's death or Mike's dating Eleven or PTSD from Vietnan explain or justify Hopper's s3 change?
These items have been mentioned as possible explanations for s3-Hop being so different from s1/s2. I initially tried to use Mike dating El as an excuse for Hopper's changes but after three s3 viewings I gave up because of everything else I've written in this essay. Here are some reasons while these explanations do not work for me.
1) Sarah's death was wrapped up when Hopper and Joyce saved Will in the upside down. Hopper literally brought Will back to life, something he could not do with Sarah. This was in incredibly moving scene and the end of a powerful arc for Hopper. But the point is it was the end of the arc: Sarah's death still impacts Hopper in s2 dealing with Eleven but Sarah dying isn't a driving force for s3-Hop and how he acts. That arc wrapped up and though it guides s2-Hop, he still acts in a consistent manor. In season 3 there's no mention of Sarah making s3-Hop stressed out so that arc is not in play.
2) Mike dating Eleven and their disrespecting Hopper are certainly stresses for s3-Hop but his reaction to breaking them up is out of character. El and Mike giggle and whisper with each other. Then s3-Hop - an adult, parent, and police chief - cruelly lies to Mike that his grandma is sick and then holds him in the car and threatens him after Mike angrily used profanity. Many commenters call Mike a "little sh|t" and side with tough guy s3-Hop and his approach. It would be consistent and believable for s3-Hop to act like this at night and then the next morning to have shown some remorse or some kind of caring to Eleven. s3-Hop could have said "too bad Mike isn't coming, let's have Eggos tonight and watch a Western." But he did not say anything to El. Instead, he smiled and then happily sang in the car on the way to work.
3) PTSD does not explain s3-Hop's behavior since we never see any evidence in the show that he is having flashbacks or any issues related to Vietnam. Also, writers just can't use PTSD as a do-anything-whenever-you-want-with-a-character excuse. Not only is there no Vietnam PTSD evidence in the episodes, there are many quotes from the official book with Hopper that he does not have PTSD.
3a) In s1, s2, and s3 the words "Vietnam" and "veteran" are never spoken. The only indication of Vietnam is a box under under Hop's cabin floor that Eleven sees when she discovers the trap door. Hopper never speaks of dreams or flashbacks and there is no other indication he has PTSD from Vietnam. His divorce, drinking, and pill abuse are all from Sarah dying based on what we see in the episodes.
3b) From the official book Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town (published May 28 2019):
1984 DECEMBER 26 - 11 days after the Snow Ball Dance with Jim and El in the cabin: The truth was, Hopper realized, that he didn’t want to talk about Vietnam, not because it was a trauma or a personal demon, but because it was ancient history—but more than that, it felt like part of some other person’s life. Although he hadn’t really stopped to consider it properly, he was aware of how he had compartmentalized his past in his own mind. So, yes, Vietnam had been difficult, and he had come back changed—as most people did, of course—but it just wasn’t relevant, not anymore. That wasn’t him, not now. Because he had come to accept that there were really only two parts to his life. Before Sara. After Sara. And nothing else really mattered. Vietnam included. He just wasn’t quite sure how he was going to explain that to El. “Because,” said Hopper with a smile, “Vietnam was a long time ago. I mean, a really long time ago. And I’m not that person now.” He leaned forward on the table, resting on his elbows. “Look, I’m sorry, really. I can understand that you are curious. And I understand you want to know more about me. I’m your—” He paused. El raised an eyebrow, cocked her chin again, waiting for the response. Hopper sighed, happily. “I’m your dad, now. And yes, there is a lot you don’t know about me. Vietnam included. One day I’ll tell you about it, when you’re older.”
1977 JULY 13 - Homicide Detective Hopper in New York City: This was a support group for veterans of the Vietnam War. Hopper knew such groups existed. He knew full well that such groups were needed. That he’d come out of the war unscathed and with his marbles all where they should be was a blessing. Okay, it had changed him, and he wasn’t going to pretend that it hadn’t been difficult at times. But what the war had done to some people... He’d never felt the need to attend a meeting like this himself, but he was glad they were there for those who did feel that need.
How can Jim Hopper's portrayal recover in season 4?
First off, there is no doubt that David Harbour is returning to play Jim Hopper in season 4 (and s5 if there is one). This is David's big, career making role that is getting him award nominations/wins (the most for any adult ST actor), and he just got a huge raise (80k to 350k per episode). And, most importantly, he loves doing the show and the people in it (especially Millie).
Since what's done is done with s3-Hop, what can happen with Hopper in s4 to bring him back into a believable and enjoyable form for huge ST fans who miss s1/s2 Jim Hopper?
I am very much hoping that Hopper will dial back or eliminate his new s3 qualities, like being whiny, selfish, complaining constantly, etc. Please bring back some of his old s1/s2 strength and empathy under a grumpy exterior.
And I hope Hopper does a reset with three people:
1) Mike - Hopper needs to do more to make up to Mike than just saying "Mike, Be careful" like he did in s3e8 at the Mall. Hop should clearly say that he accepts Mike as El's boyfriend and that he knows he'll do everything possible to keep her safe. Which is actually what Mike did for all of s3 while s3-Hop was adventuring with Joyce.
2) Eleven - While the Letter explains why Hop was feeling upset (change, less time with El, etc), it does not justify how s3-Hop acted afterward when he lied and threatened Mike breaking them up. Hop needs to clearly apologize to Eleven for being selfish, immature, and inconsiderate.
3) Joyce - I hope that Hopper admits to Joyce that he acted like a jerk towards her and that he promises to be a better person in general and especially better with her. That's the only way I can make any sense out of Joyce and Hopper being any kind of couple: Hop has to own up to his terrible behavior towards Joyce and promise to be better.
The End! Sort of... :)
Well, you've read or skimmed or skipped all the way to the almost end and I thank you for taking time to look at my thoughts about Jim Hopper's portrayal in season 3. I still love Hop and think David does an incredible acting job with him in each season. I've been 100% sure he's coming back since the Duffers have bluntly said: no body = no death. So while I'm a little scared at how Hopper will be characterized in season 4, I'm also very excited to see it! Word is that season 4 will have more episodes (10, 11, 12?) than normal. Plus, the Duffers just signed a big deal with Netflix so I'm wondering if season 4 will be a semi-finale for the series and give the Duffers and the stars a break to do other stuff and then come back for a movie or a season after more ideas have percolated in the Duffers' creative minds.
So, here's looking forward to season 4 when we can see Jim Hopper evolve along with all the other great Stranger Things characters.

Cherry Bomb: Chap. 1
For clarification, Milven is purely platonic and events from Stranger Things 3 did not happen, such as Jim Hopper's death and the Byers and Eleven moving away.
June 14, 1985
"Roth... Roth...." the voice of Mike Wheeler said coming from the comm.
[Y/N] groaned and picked it up. "What you want, Blackbird?"
"You want to come over and play some D & D? With the rest of the party? Over." He asked.
[Y/N] [L/N] had lived next to the Wheeler family since she was five. Her family had moved there for a change of pace as it was a small town and very different from Indianapolis. She and Mike had grown up as window neighbors.
"But my elvan archer will die! It's happened every time. So much for me trying to be a female Legolas. Over."
"Then, bring your other characters. I know you created like twenty, so you can continue on playing with us for ten hours. Over." He told her.
[Y/N] could faintly hear the sound of snickers and giggles from the other end followed by the normal "Shut up!" from Mike. She sighed to herself.
"What will I be getting out of this again? Over."
"Time with the greatest people you have ever known? Over." Mike paused before adding. "We have food. Blackbird out."
"I'll be there in a minute. Roth out." [Y/N] put the comm down and left the room.
She didn't hear the endless teasing from Eleven, Max, Lucas, and Dustin. Or any of what Mike said in retaliation of their teasing and mochery. Instead, while that was going on, she hopped down the stairs to her mom. At the moment, it was just [Y/N], her mom, and her cat at the house (her parents were seperated, but they both liked the small town life of Hawkins, Indiana).
"Hey, momma, can I go over to the Wheeler's right now? Mike invited me over to play Dungeons & Dragons with the party." She asked finding her mom in the kitchen baking some deserts.
"Sure, sweetie. Just be back by six. You're father will be over here to pick you up for the weekend." Her mother, [Mother Name], replied.
It was the Friday after school let out for the summer and the first thing the party wanted to do was play Dungeons & Dragons. Of course some people (Max Mayfield) resented that notion seeing as it was summer which meant no more school and some more beach.
"Okay. Love you! Bye!" [Y/N] kissed her mom's cheek and zoomed out the door to her neighbors house.
She knocked on the door and Nancy opened the door for her. The upcoming senior at Hawkins High sighed before allowing the young girl that hadn't been involved with anything weird yet into their house. One thing the party, Jim Hopper, Joyce Byers, Nancy Wheeler, Jonathon Byers, and the Scoup Troop all agreed on was to leave the girl out of it. Out of all of it. [Y/N] went down towards Mike's basement where she found the boys setting up the pieces at the table and the girls were setting up snacks such as chips, some bite sized deserts, and soda.
"Hi, [Y/N]." Eleven said.
"Hi, El." [Y/N] said coming over to the two girls.
"[Y/N], which character are you playing?" Mike said looking through the folder labeled [Y/N]'s characters.
"Uh... actually... I wanted to try to be... a... uh..." then the girl mumbled what she wanted to do.
Max Mayfield and Eleven smirked (as they had heard what she said). Dustin Henderson asked for her to speak up, so they could hear her. All they got out of her was a smear of red across her face. Now that the boys were staring at her and her two only female friends were smirking, she instantly regretted every decision she had ever made.
"You know what? Just forget it. I'll use my elva-."
"She wants a chance as Dungeon Master, but she is too nervous to say anything to you four." Max said cutting her friend off.
[Y/N] tried to cover her face with her hands as she waited for the laughter to come right afterwards. It was a stupid idea. A stupid, silly thing to suggest she do. Way to make a fool out of you, [Y/N]. the [H/C] haired girl thought to herself before shying away from her friends.
"Since when do you know how to be Dungeon Master?" Dustin asked as he and Lucas sneakily (not that sly though) glanced over at Mike.
"It can't be that much difficult than putting on shows with action figures and dolls while my little cousins intervene about what the different characters could do." And Mike taught me.
"I say we give her a shot. I'm tired of doing the same thing ever single time." Max said.
"We don't do the same thing every time!" Lucas retorted back at his girlfriend.
"It's the same thing, but different outcomes based on the die roll." Eleven agreed.
"Just let her be dungeon master, guys. For one day. I actually want to see where she'll go with it. I'll just be a Gnome Thief." Mike told them.
"I don't have a problem with that." Will Byers added making his first statement in the conversation.
"Go on, [Y/N]." Dustin said glancing at the seat next to Mike. "You can sit there."
[Y/N] didn't see the glare Mike sent Dustin as she sat down in the seat. Eleven and Max got some food before sitting down.
"So, are we ready?" she asked them.
"Yeah. Let's see what you got." Lucas told her.
"To be clear, this is going to be totally -."
"Just start already, [Y/N]." Mike interrupted her. "Yes, we're well aware this is 'Geek Improv'."
Eleven looked from Mike to [Y/N]. As soon as she started to go to school with the party, she met [Y/N] almost as soon as she stepped into the door. And instantly, she understood why Mike hadn't been able to return her feeling. And now, watching the two of them, it reminded Eleven of why that was. Time passed and they all realized how much more involved she was with the details than Mike was and they all knew the adventure they were on was all sprouted from her mouth like bullshit. Because it was. She was making it up as she went along.
"You have reached the end of your quest. But your quest is not over. Instead, one of your party members carries a dark secret. One of them is actually the Great Darkness that vows to shrall the land in eternal night. You hear the cackle of what sounds like the Wicked Witch of the West Hehehe! As the sound bounces off the walls of the cave, you wonder where and who the sound is coming from. But it's too late. Your hear it say 'It's too late for you. Hehehehe!' And the voice is coming from-."
"[Y/N]," Karen Wheeler, Mike's and Nancy's mom, said walking down into the basement, "your mom says your dad is waiting for you. Time to go."
Karen Wheeler went back upstairs and Dustin leaned over to Mike, "Since when does your mom come down here?"
Mike simply shrugged. "Can we finish this really quickly?"
[Y/N] shook her head getting up from her seat. "Sorry. Dad's impatient as it is, and we're supposed to go to Chicago for the weekend. I'll be back Wednesday though. We can finish it then. Have a good weekend, Blackbird. Fellow geeks." She saluted them.
"Bye, Roth. Have fun with your dad." Mike said as she went back up the stairs.
"Dude!" Max exclaimed once she was out of earshot.
"What?!" Mike fired back.
"Do you two really have to act like that?" Max asked him.
"Like what?" he asked her.
"Like that! Two love sick idiots. Why don't you just ask her out?" asked Max.
"He can't."
"He's tried."
"Countless times."
"Failed countless times."
"Stuck in the friend zone, is he." Dustin said in the voice of Yoda.
"He's not that stuck. She likes him back. Right, El?" Max asked looking at her female friend for assistance.
"She does." Eleven nodded her head in agreement. "Just ask her out."
"Do it. When she comes back." Max told him.
"Jeez, okay, I will." Mike told him.
Wednesday came, and he commed [Y/N]'s radio. "Roth... Roth... Roth...."
No answer. Usually she would pick up after the second or third Rorh, but silence filled the radio. He tried again thinking her mom may have cleaned up her room while she was away (it has happened before). Silence.
"[Y/N], you there? Blackbird here ... trying to talk to you. Over." Silence.
This was weird. It was strange. Even when she was angry with him, she never metaphorically left him on read. She would radio in that she was angry and didn't want to talk and there would be a "I DON'T WANT TO TALK TO YOU! I HATE YOU!" followed afterward that she didn't really mean. And that's when he heard shouting, yelling, and screaming from next door. It sounded like her parents.
Mike got out of his basement and along with his family and the rest of the street watched the scene play out between [Mother] and [Father] who hadn't spoken or saw one another in months.
"What do you mean you lost her? She was here yesterday! She called telling me she was back in Hawkins!" [Mother] yelled.
"I went to get food, and then she's gone! I checked everywhere for her! She's not here! And I'm pretty sure she didn't go back to Chicago! So, yeah I lost her! But I didn't lose her OKAY? She's missing! Gone! And it's not my fault! Dear god, why would you think it was my fault?" [Father] yelled back.
"It wouldn't be the first time you thought that." [Mother] mumbled before shouting, "If you didn't lose her, then help me find her! Help me find my daughter! Before something awful happens to her!"
[Y/N] was missing? Mike looked over at Nancy who was looking at him back. They both knew that the Upside Down had a part to play in the disappearance of [Y/N] [L/N].
What Netflix Original would the characters of Stranger Things watch the most often?
Eleven - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Eleven would compare the events of her life to Sabrina's events in her life when they are sorta similar)
Mike - Orange is the New Black (gives me Mike vibes)
Max - Sex Education (gives me Max Mayfield vibes)
Will - A Series of Unfortunate Events (i feel like he would have read the books in elementary school, so he felt obligated to watch the show)
Lucas - Lost in Space (i didn't know what to pick for Lucas, so I just picked something random)
Dustin - Voltron Legendary Defender (Dustin has always given me vibes that he's a cartoon watcher type of TV person)
Steve - Daybreak (gives me Steve vibes)
Nancy - The Worst Witch (this was an accident. Nancy didn't want to watch it, but saw the trailer, thought it was interesting, and watches it afterwards).
Robin - Disenchantment (doesn't it just scream Robin at you?)
Jonathon - You (he would have heard about it from Nancy who wanted to watch it and he got hooked)
Joyce - Santa Clarita Diet (funny zombie humor)
Hopper - The Crown (this would have started off as something that both Hopper and Eleven watched together as a sort of father-daughter show or whatever, but he got hooked really, really fast)

Crashing down
(steve harrington x hopper!reader / billy hargrove x hopper!reader)
Hi guys! I’m new at writing stories and shit but ya know what oh well. This is gonna be my first story or fic whatever you call it so no hate pls 😁 feedback is very much appreciated. My god I don’t even know where to start.. but thanks and enjoy love bugs.
Catch up here
Warnings: angst?, sadness, Stranger Things s3 spoilers (eventually), uh yeah
Part 1/?
Word count: 1458
Summery: Sometimes things just don’t go as planned and your world just come crashing down, but it’s a good thing that you have people in your life to be there to catch you when you fall.
A little backstory, your name is Y/N Hopper, daughter of Chief Hopper. You have been best friends with Steve Harrington since middle school. You had always had sort of a crush on him, but you never really did anything about it since you’re best friends. You two stuck together through thick and thin, you even stuck out the whole King Steve phase and all of the Nancy bullshit in high school, which kind of sucked but you made a few friends out of it, like Nancy, Barb, Carol and Tommy H. (even though you didn’t exactly Like Tommy and Carol).
Since you were friends with Nancy, you would end up being a part time babysitter of the party, which you didn’t mind because you just so happen to love all of the kids and the nerdy shit that they were into. You would hang out with them and spectate their D&D campaigns, giving feedback every now and then. So when everything went down with Will’s disappearance you wanted to help as much as you could, because that was one of your babies. (Will is baby <3)  That’s when you got sucked into all of the upside down stuff, and your dad was NOT a fan. After losing your little sister and your mother, Hop would do any and everything to keep you safe, you were all he had left. In the end of it all you got Will back and gained a new sister, El.
When heart-breaker Billy Hargrove moved into town you, like every other girl at Hawkins High, fell head over heels for him. But something about you made Billy super interested, and not just interested for a day or two. After awhile of seeing each other Billy started to open up to you about everything, about Neil, his life back in California, his dreams and everything in between. He eventually asked you to be his girlfriend and of course you said yes! This boy would do anything for you, he was soft for you. He wasn’t exactly crazy about you being best friends with Harrington (because he hated his guts), but there wasn’t a lot he could do about it. You guys would argue about a few things here and there, but never bad, until recently. It almost seemed as if everything you did annoyed Billy. You would be talking to him about something and he wouldn’t even attempt to act like he was paying attention to what you were saying because he was bored or annoyed. You could almost say he looked like he was losing interest in you.
Then there was that one night, in 1985.
June 29, 1985
It was one of those nights where you were arguing with Billy in the front seat of his Camaro, in your driveway. Maybe it was because you had been spending more time with the kids recently, watch over the little shitheads. Maybe it was because you saw they way he would be flirting with Mrs. Wheeler when he was on duty at the pool, and didn’t think that you were looking. Whatever it was, it was stupid and you shouldnt have been arguing in the first place. It was at this moment that you realized that you and Billy were drifting apart. One thing led to another and Billy started yelling at you full force, and there was no holding back. He had never yelled at you like this before.
Tears started to form in your eyes, so you opened your door and got out of the car slamming the door behind you before he could get a word out of his mouth.
“Y/N!” Billy yelled, voice still full of anger.
You didn’t need to turn around to know that he was hot on your tail following you to the front door of your dad’s cabin.
“Y/N, baby c’mon” his voice softened.
“No, Billy! You don’t get to ‘baby c'mon’ me after you just yelled at me for spending too much time with the kids’ when it’s literally my job and you’re the one spending too much time ogling at Mrs. Wheeler and then act like it’s not a big deal and that everything’s okay!”, you had finally had enough.
“I’m sor-”
“Billy, I love you. I literally love you to the moon and then some. I give you my all and I try to make this work but I’m starting to think that the feeling isn’t mutual.” you finally admitted.
Billy stood with his mouth open in shock to what you had just said. You stood staring at each other for a few solid seconds, but having a staring contest was the last thing you needed so you turned on your heels and marched your way up the stairs to your house, leaving Billy in the darkness of the forest, alone and hurt. You slammed the door behind you and slid your back down the door to the ground. Shortly after, you heard the familiar sound of the Billy revving up the engine of his Camaro, and finally driving away. Did you really just say all of that? What does this mean? What will become of your “relationship”?
That’s when all of the tears finally fell, your head hung low in between your knees. Quiet sobs left your throat, you were happy that your dad and El weren’t home, well that’s what you thought at least. El slowly makes her way into the living room, staring at you with wide eyes. She took a step closer to you and the floor make a creaking noise. That was when you realized you weren’t home alone.
Your head snapped up to meet her brown eyes. Your eyes were bloodshot and filled with tears, the only time El had ever seen you cry was when she had made her reappearance in November of 1984. You started to open your mouth to say something to her but before you could she fell onto the floor and into your arms. At first you didn’t hug back, but when she squeezed you with all her might you hugged her back like it was your last night on earth.
You eventually moved from the floor to your room, snuggling with your little sister on your bed. It was around 11 pm when you heard three soft knocks on your bedroom door.
“Come in..” you managed to get out between the sniffles.
Hopper opened the door slowly and peeked his head in, noticing the state you were in, he suddenly changed his force with the door pushing it open harder than intended. He quickly walked over to you and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Why are you crying? Are you okay? What happened?” he questioned
“Billy and I- we- we got in a fight” you said thinking back on the fight
Tears started forming in your swollen eyes once again. Your father tensed up at the thought of his little girl being so heartbroken over a stupid boy. He instantly began plotting how he was going to turn this little shits life upside dow-
“But it’s okay.” you said softly “I mean everyone had fights, right? People go through shit..”
“Language” El commented.
You turned to her with an amused look on your face and you two burst into giggles for no reason. You loved being apart of this little family, for this very reason. Someone could be having the most awful, shitty, terrible day and someone would be your ray of sunshine and make your dark world a little bit brighter.
“Well I know you probably want a little bit of space kid, so I’ll leave you two alone, but if you need me to tear that son of a bitches balls off I wi-”
“DAD!” you and El both shouted amongst the laughter that broke out into the room
“Okay, okay.. I won’t..” he started, “unlessyouchangeyourmind” he finished
You started to motion for your dad to leave the room, he started to take El out with him.
“Hey El, can you stay?” you asked loud enough for them both to hear.
El turned to you with a smile on her face as wide as it could’ve been, she ran and leaped back onto your bed and engulfed you in a big bear hug. Once you two got settled into a comfortable position you began drifting off into a peaceful slumber thinking, ‘maybe tomorrow will be better?’
