Phoenix Ch R1: Matteo Berrettini [WC] def. Hugo Gaston 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
It might have taken a while to get going for M. Berrettini, but the Italian wild card managed to get things under control as soon as he found his serve and groundstrokes combination back. Furthermore, M. Berrettini's backhand also worked perfectly in this match, especially in the last two sets while oftentimes balancing with the volleys when necessary, creating 13 break points thanks to his aggression despite H. Gaston having a 66% break point conversion rate while trying to apply his classic tricks.
On the other hand, M. Berrettini had an exceptional first serve winning percentage with 82%, 26% more than H. Gaston, aided by his 10 aces to get out of most troubles despite the first-set start to adjust himself for the play. Interestingly, even though H. Gaston double-faulted eight times, he still won 1% more second serve points than M. Berrettini with 51%, likely due to the latter's constant forehand rush earlier in the match.
In the second round, M. Berrettini will face the winner between eighth seed Arthur Cazaux or qualifier Adam Walton, which will be played today (local time). While this could be dubbed as the battle of the generations, this could be exciting to check how M. Berrettini's game fared to the current state of the Tour, especially knowing the potential of both players. Should be a fun one, with pressure points and their groundstrokes' consistency being predominantly tested!

I love Hugo, but I’m not gonna lie, this is almost surprising. It sometimes feels like he can’t win outside of Paris. But good job! Hopefully he’ll get into the main draw.

Goth literature is a mess of moral conceptions 🖤💖
Btw by Erik i mean the Leroux one (Lon Chaney is the closest we have to the original, except the cruel ending)

I'm honestly shocked that since Emotion/Representation aired I've yet to see anyone do anything at all with Felix and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein??? I think about it every day it's literally THE Felix piece of media. It's his entire character thesis. What are we doing guys
I KNOW I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT IT THE OTHER DAY
To be fair I have seen a few people headcanoning it as one of Felix’s favourite books (Which yes. Absolutely. 1,000,000%) but there hasn’t been any fics/art/edits/etc. about it yet to my knowledge. My copy is at my parents’ and in French but I am tempted to find an English PDF since it’s been public domain for a good while now. The web weave potential is insane.
I have many thoughts about Felix and literature in general… I have him quote Cyrano de Bergerac all the time in my fics, for example. I was thinking of starting a list of works of art and literature he’d enjoy, so I’ll take this as a sign to get writing! I can get my fandom friends to make some suggestions as well! 📝
Edit: @bittersweetresilience got us covered, our honour is safe 💜🦚

After taking control of the second set, M. Berrettini continued to dominate the pace in the third set. This time, he painted the lines through a swift return to force a deuce before M. Berrettini and H. Gaston were engaged in an out-slicing contest, the latter which failed his for the former's break point before its conversion thanks to M. Berrettini's backhand return (1-0). However, M. Berrettini's backhand error secured H. Gaston's break back to 1-1.
Somehow, the Italian wild card to break back yet again after his forehand winner commenced the next game, followed by a double fault from H. Gaston before another forehand winner created the break point, which was converted through M. Berrettini's final volley after passing the let cord (2-1). The latter then consolidated through a service game hold (3-1) and successfully equalized through a drop shot before doubling the break (4-1). However, an erroneous service game resulted in H. Gaston having to face a match point, mostly due to his forehand errors, which was immediately converted after it went too wide for M. Berrettini to secure the third set breadstick (6-1), thus his first win after being sidelined for more than 6 months.

One of the arguments i see a lot of people using against Erik and his fans is comparing him to Claude Frollo and, consenquently, comparing Christine to Esmeralda and saying both of the stories are cases of abuse and violence against women, two mean men that were obssessed with a girl and turned their life into a living hell. Sorry but, I think comparing they both and saying they're "the same" and "as evil/vicious as" is beyond incorrect, for MANY reasons.
1. Frollo hates Esmeralda because she's a Romani woman, his obssession, hatred and despise for her isn't only because "he's horny and sinful", but also because the woman he was obssessed with was a Romani. And he hates Roma people, he despises Roma people, he murdered and tortured Roma people. He's a disgusting racist that used his power to commit mass murder, mass murder against an ethnic group. / Erik is NOT racist and never abused, killed or tortured people because of their ethnicity.
2. Frollo abused Quasimodo his whole life and made him see himself as a monster because of his deformity. He hates deformed people, in some versions he even tried to kill Quasimodo because of his "ugliness". Frollo always saw and treated Quasimodo as a monster, even slaved the poor child and didn't care for his healthy working in the Bell Tower. / Erik is literally Quasimodo in this situation. He was abused, tortured, rejected and treated as a freak. Comparing a victim to someone that represents their abuse... can't be even called humanity. It's completely lack of empathy.
3. Frollo never hided anything, he doesn't "love" Esmeralda. He got horny because she was hot and wanted to RAPE HER. He wanted to make her a SEXUAL SLAVE, he killed her in the novel, he almost burned her alive in the Disney version. He was ALWAYS a pervese monster that wanted to hurt her and humiliate her. / Erik NEVER despised Christine. He LOVED her, he loved her since the first day they met each other, and he keeps loving her even when she ends up with Raoul, because her happiness was more important to Erik. He recognized that.
4. Frollo wasn't abused, tortured or rejected by anyone, he is a respected priest. He had power, admiration, wealth, he had no emotional problem, trauma or unresolved issues. He's naturally a bastard. He got offended because Esmeralda didn't want to have sex with him. / Erik was abused his whole life. He didn't have the chance of being loved or admired as he deserved. He needs to hide from society and survive in a cellar to have a less worse life. Erik's love for Christine was real and pure, but his despair and anguish turned his feelings into an obssession. It's not his fault. Even though, he didn't let his obssession overcome the love he had for Christine, the goodness inside of him.
5. Frollo feels pleasure torturing weaker people and even killing them. He did everything to destroy Esmeralda and was able to kill her. / Erik hurted Christine without the intention of hurting her. He tried to force her love and it was wrong and bullshit. He knew it. Erik never did something like this with anybody else, he wronged with Christine, but it doesnt mean he's lost forever. Erik never felt joy hurting anyone or being hurted. He could have just forced Christine into marriage and give a big shit to her happiness, but he didn't. He let her go. Her happiness was his happiness, even if she loved another man.
6. Esmeralda was 16 years old, being stalked, harrassed and eventually killed by a vicious old creep. / Christine is young but she's an adult woman, the same age of Raoul (20-21). She was Erik's friend and cared for him, his possessive feelings (and his face) may have scared her, but she still saw the kindness and love inside of him and gave him compassion.
7. Frollo killed many innocent people and supported the Inquisition, aside from being misogynistic. / Erik was forced to kill political enemies in Persia (AGAIN, NOT HIS FAULT), Phillip's death was self-defense (IF Erik actually killed him, because he said it was an accident), Joseph Buquet killed himself and the chandelier "accident" (which killed only one person) was wrongful death, not homocide. And there are theories that the chandelier INDEED felt without Erik's fault, as you can check here. Erik isn't murderous or cruel.
Stop comparing Erik to Frollo. Frollo is an abusive monster, Erik is an abused victim. The only paralel they have is the obssessive behaviour towards a woman, and even still, Erik is different because he loved her WAY BEFORE becoming possessive, recognized his mistakes AND let her go. Frollo KILLED Esmeralda and nearly raped her. They're not the same. Supporting Erik is completely the opposite of supporting a racist murderous abuser like Frollo.
