"Daddy?"
Sans, standing behind Aliza with a hairband between his teeth and a pair of slightly rusty but extremely sharp barber's scissors in his hand, raised a single brow bone, tugging on his daughter's ear gently with his free hand to stop her fidgeting.
"stop moving, precious, i don't wanna cut you. what'd you need."
Aliza, pouting out her lower lip but stilling obediently, folded her hands in her lap and twiddled her thumbs, letting out a soft exhalation.
"I was wondering if there was... more to the Underground. Besides in the places I came from. I saw the place you called the Ruins, and that old city, before coming out into the snow... saw all those empty houses in the forest on the road here... the road going out into the forest. Is there other stuff out there? Other cities? Other people?"
Sans, letting out a sigh of his own but quirking a small smile at her curiosity, set aside his scissors and picked up a comb, carefully parting the girl's hair evenly.
"there's a lot more. the underground's a pretty big place, and in it's heyday, it housed nearly five and a half million monsters. not nearly as many as there were above, but... well. the war was hard, and monsters take a lot longer to reproduce than humans do. that was after fifteen hundred years of rebuilding, and to be honest... it was a good thing we were close to escaping."
"Why?"
"we were runnin' out of space. not for monsters, but to support the economy. there wasn't always enough food in the poor seasons, when the water above froze and the crops withered, and even when things were going well, we were only scraping by at best. there was unrest, and panic, and a significant loss of hope... the thing that keeps monsters alive. in darker corners, there was talk of sending a monster to the capital to take one of the souls that the king was guarding and going out to find more... something another monster, long ago, had failed at, in an attempt to end our imprisonment. it never happened though. your mom came instead."
Aliza's eyes sparkled, jumping in place and upsetting Sans' careful parting.
"She made friends with everyone, changed their minds about humans, and helped find a new plan to escape! Right?"
Sans chuckled, smoothing her hair flat again with the palm of his hand, before sobering for a moment, reaching up to tap a single finger against the pendant of his locket.
"...right. but that's not what you asked about. you wanted to know what else is out there."
She nodded exuberantly, casting her father a sideways glance at his change in tone, but he turned her face away again with a gently curled knuckle and a shake of his head, resuming his combing as though nothing had happened.
"well. to start off with, there's four main sections of the underground, each named for its respective climate. you may've noticed by now, but the guy that named all this stuff... well. imagination wasn't really his gig. he figured it would remind people of things that they missed, above, make 'em feel more at home. nice sentiment, but it really kind of just made the ones that remembered sad. i wouldn't know. i've never seen the surface to miss it."
Something in his voice revealed a lie, but he pressed on before Aliza could ask about it, seeming to finally be satisfied with the part in her hair and setting aside the comb to take up the scissors again.
"first is the autumn refuge. you saw at least part of the ruins; they were here before we were imprisoned, an old, old city from an ancient civilization of humans and monsters. half the city was sunken in water when we arrived, the buildings all but useless. old home was made from the parts of the old ruins we could salvage. slowly abandoned, when it became too small, remote, and, honestly, depressing to contain the growing population of survivors and their needs. across the river are the fields and farms of fallholm, where most of the food and livestock of the kingdom was grown and kept. they get bits of natural sun, from cracks in the mountain, filtering through the barrier, and its one of the few places non-magical animals would thrive. the threshold of the bulwark, a sunken human fortress from an age before even gerson, our oldest monster, could recall, lies on the border between fallholm and the snow-locked lands beyond, where we are now. it was repurposed into a trading hub, most roads through the kingdom leading to and from it. last i'd checked, it's been pilfered clean."
With a clean snip of his scissors, Sans started to trim the girl's hair, holding the locks between his fingers to measure them expertly.
"which brings us to the frigid arboretum, encompassing all of the land frozen under the iceberg covering half of mt. ebott; name's a bit long, so most of us just called it the fridge. the fridge was the raw goods harvesting and processing center, producing lumber, ore, stone, ice, various consumables, and the occasional tourist location. the only monsters that lived outside of the largest city, winterrest, were workers, furry creatures tired of city living, and members of the kingdom's royal guard; it was just too cold for anyone else. we had a few small towns, lumberton to the north, ferron to the south, and snowdin, of course, a small trading post that sprung up around the ice machine required to cool the core in hotland. winterrest, like i said, is the biggest city, and drew in crowds of city slickers with its rustic "charm", along with students for our magic college, the one pap went to. it's up towards the cavern's northern wall, surrounding the edge of a lake of waterfall's runoff."
He paused for a moment to judge his cuts, tilting his head and stepping to the side to eye the rest of her hair, before continuing, tilting her head a little to the side with a light touch of his hand.
"waterfall itself is, objectively, the most beautiful section of the underground. the bio-luminescent fungi that grows on the roofs of the rest of the caves won't grow in the persistent humidity there; instead, a peculiar sort of crystal formed on its walls and ceilings, and they glowed, lighting the way through the maze of caverns. there's one room so densely packed with them that it was called the wishing room... monsters used to go there to make wishes. our form of prayers, to the only gods we've ever known. the stars."
He quieted, laying a hand on Aliza's shoulder, and she raised one of her own to touch it, leaning her head back against his chest. They stayed like that for a moment, silent and still, before Sans slid his hand out from under hers, squeezing her fingers appreciatively, and continuing her haircut.
"the, uh... the caves in waterfall range from entirely flooded to only slightly moist, but all of it is persistently wet from the runoff of the glacier, and so the plantlife there is not just abundant, it's kind of taken on a life of its own. it was home to the amphibious, the fungal, the amorphous, the weird, and the completely aquatic alike, and housed and grew our more water based crops, most especially echo flower. it had a city there that's completely underwater, coastharbor; had it's own economy and everything- no one really knows what happened to them, after the sickness came. besides that, there was a few smaller towns, puddlemire and tem village and backwater row, besides the major accessible city, springhaven. it was... a sight to see, precious. my favorite city down here. it's always raining in springhaven; it's right under the lake on the surface, and the entire thing was built up like a castle. you could see it from almost anywhere in the swamps, just... glittering like a jewel. ‘s where i went to college, an age ago, at the magitech university... your mom loved it there too. insisted on going to the wishing lantern festival every year, spending every weekend she could there. ...it's where we were married."
Aliza, sober and quiet, with crystalline tears on her lashes, tried to turn in her chair, shivering slightly.
"Dad, you don't have to-"
Sans coughed under his breath, shaking away his momentary melancholy.
"'m fine, aliza. 'm fine. sit still, or it's gonna be uneven."
She complied, though one of her tears streaked her cheek unheeded, staring at the light switch on the wall with a determined set to her jaw, as though attempting to keep from shedding any more.
"...where was i. waterfall, right. there's also an enormous garbage pile in a section of the caverns, below the humans' landfill above. it sounds gross, but it's how a lot of monsters stayed up to date on technology and things from above. some things we invented, but without the help of a book that fell around thirty years ago, we would never have had the undernet. i go out there sometimes, look for useful things for traps, packaged food, things that might entertain paps."
"...could I come next time?"
Sans blinked, scissors mid-snip, then smiled, smoothing some strands of cut hair from her overlarge, stained t-shirt onto the floor dotingly.
"course, precious. it's pretty safe, the only monster that lives there is scared stuffingless of me."
"Can't imagine why."
"i really can't. anyway... hotland is next. hotland is... a strange place. even back then it was. most of the monsters that lived there were caught up in what is considered high end business, like technology and entertainment. everyone was either a rising star, a wanna be, an agent, or someone making something for the stars, it seemed, and it was all drama there, all the time. the worst of them all, though, was mettaton."
Aliza perked at the familiar name, moving her gaze to the faded, ripped poster just in sight through the kitchen doorway, above the battered couch.
"I know him, Papyrus loves Mettaton~"
Sans made an audible sound of disgust, pulling a face and rolling the blue light in his whole socket.
"believe me, i'm aware. he commended himself for not just saving the core, the main power facility for the underground, but for keeping everyone in the caverns entertained, despite his abysmal reviews. ...i have to admit his buying and re-purposing the buildings around the core's facilities into his resort did bring it back from decommission. he was a flamboyant spectacle, and a constant nuisance, given your uncle’s obsession, but i can give him that much. didn't do much for alphys' career, or the trashed reputation of royal scientist, after what happened to... uh. the people that came before her. but, at the very least, the core survived."
Sans shrugged one shoulder, shuffling to the side to move on to a new section of hair.
"there aren't many towns or cities in hotland to speak of... most of it is too hot, or covered in lava. summerset city is the largest, the hub of most media and entertainment, like i said, and where most of the monsters lived... there’s another school there, the tech college; that’s where my friend alph went. there's the lab, where the royal scientist resided, supposed to be working on solutions to escaping the underground. the resort is part hotel, part apartment building, after mettaton bought the residences of the remaining workers still living there, so i suppose that counts. ...muffet's lair. muffet was a spider monster, and has a section of caverns pretty much to herself, holed up in the core's maintenance paths where no one can disturb her "genius". she was a baker, you see. insisted people were always trying to steal her recipes. she and her sisters all lived there. great pastries... but they cost an arm and a leg, heh."
With a final snip, Sans finished off her hair, and set down his scissors, picking up the comb again to brush away any stray clips of hair he might have missed.
"and after that is new home. the end of the underground, and where over half of us lived. it was one giant city, overlooked by the wealthy and the palace, and it's where, i have to assume, most of the monsters still are, honest. it's where everyone said they were going, at least. ...anyway. the palace is pretty grand, too grand for my taste, but i'm not a monster made for that kind of life. i had a job there, when they needed me, but mostly i was just there to report on things that went on in the other sectors. have some tea with the king, talk shop, that jazz. past the palace is the barrier room, and the only natural exit to the caverns that exists. we don't know when the one in the ruins opened; we were sealed and trapped inside with rocks when we were imprisoned. we only know it's too steep to climb to bother with."
Seemingly pleased with his work, Sans held out a mirror to Aliza, and she took it from him to inspect his work, admiring her, for the first time, even and trimmed locks. She'd never had a haircut that either she or gramma hadn't given to her, and neither of those had ever turned out well.
"Thank you, daddy, it looks great! How did you learn to cut hair?" she asked before thinking, holding the mirror behind her head to try to look at the back of her head, and Sans, putting the scissors and comb away in a drawer beside the stove, gave her an ironic look.
"your mom couldn't cut her own bangs either, and tori always gave her a bowl cut. so i learned how," he explained, and Aliza, setting the mirror down on the table, let out a giggle, spinning over to his side and, pausing a moment first (Sans nodded, looking appreciative), leaning in to wrap her arms around the monster's shoulders tightly.
"Well. Thank you for not giving me a bowl cut. ...and for telling me all that. It must hurt, to remember all that, and know its... gone," she whispered, setting her forehead against his arm, and Sans, raising his own arms to hug her back, let out a tired sigh, his sockets shuttered but his smile still present.
"it sucks. but it's been and done. ask me anything you need to know, precious. it's what i'm here for."

Second chance with my teen crush
I was 15 when I saw Rai McCoy for the first time, I was new to the tiny sleepy english village and she lived in the house next door. It was so tiny that all there were just a few little shops and a lot of farms surrounding the area, me and Rai were the only teen girls in the whole village. Maybe that’s why she hung out with me, she was 17 and in the city I had grown up in she wouldn’t of looked twice at me. But here we would always be hanging out after school and at the weekends, she was tall with short brown hair. She didn’t seem to mind that I was shy and sometimes nervous around her at first, but the more time I spent with her the more confident I got.
We both went to the same secondary school and would take the bus together to it, but at school we were part of different worlds. She was a sixth former and I was doing my GCSE’s, but sometimes I swear she would give me a secret smile if we passed each other. When we were together we would spend hours listening to her music or climbing to the top of a tree and carving our names into it or swimming in the wide river that ran by our village.
One hot summer afternoon we were taking turns jumping into the deep river, hoping it would cool us off. We had not planned on doing this so neither of us were in swimsuits, when we finally left the water her top was now see through. She caught me looking at her sports bra, it was the first time I noticed she had boobs too. It sounds silly but she had always been such a tomboy, suddenly it clicked that she was this amazing person but also an attractive girl. We had spoken about many things together, but never boys I guess because neither of us are really into them. I knew right then that I liked her because she wasn’t like the other girls who wore make up, she was my first crush.
I though she would get upset seeing where I was looking but to my surprise she took my hand and led me into the forest, “I’m getting a right rash, stay lookout while I take it off.” But to my surprise she doesn’t turn around, she takes off her top right in front of me. But she doesn’t look embarrassed she smiles a smile that puts a warm feeling in my belly, she takes off her bra and drops it to the floor. Then stepping towards me she asks for my permission with her eyes before taking my hand at bring it to her breast, it’s so soft and warm. I feel so safe and then with my hand still on her breast we kiss, I take my hand away and bring both my hands onto her back holding her naked torso close. When we break away she slips her shirt back on, then grabs her sports bra off the floor. I take her held out hand and we start to walk back to her’s.
From that point on it didn’t feel like anything changed between us but more our relationship grew, back then we weren’t able to even utter the word lesbian or bi or girlfriend but we didn’t mind what we were we just knew we belonged to each other.
Being 2 years older Rai had always been a bit more advanced sexually then I was, but she never pushed me to do anything I wasn’t ready for. So the most of we did when hanging in the woods was kissing and the occasional exploring each others bodies, Rai told me she wanted our first time not to be a secret in the woods. But eventually it was time for her to go to uni, we both knew I wouldn’t be able to visit and long distance would never work. So we said goodbye tearfully hoping to see each other again one day, I kept hiding my sexuality focusing only on men until one day I saw her again.
After a bad breakup I was forced to move back in with my parents, I saw her in the back garden so I knew that she was still living next door. Usually I would rush over and find out how she was doing but I had a souvenir from my last relationship, I was pregnant and almost full term at that. It wasn’t that I was ashamed that I was pregnant it was that I had slept with someone else, although I was bi and had been with men somehow I wanted Rai to know that I had never felt closer to anyone as much as to her.
I wanted a chance to explain myself before she assumed anything I guess, but then my mum told me that she had already told next door that I was back. I knew that I had to see Rai, I didn’t want her thinking I was avoiding her. So I took a deep breath and picked up the house phone, it hadn’t been since I was a teen I had rang Rai. I was surprised when she told me that her parents had moved and she now owned the house, I wondered if she had a partner or family to fill the house. My curiosity got the better of me and I asked her out to dinner, looks like she would be seeing me that evening in all my pregnant glory.
I got to the pub early securing myself a booth, the table hid my bump quite nicely. It wasn’t long before I saw Rai approach smiling. I only had a quick glimpse of her before, now I could see that she look pretty much the same just more mature. I wondered if she had a wedding ring on, I looked and saw her hands were clear of rings.
We sat and the conversation flowed so naturally, it felt like no time had passed at all. She was so gorgeous in her check shirt and skinny jeans, I wanted her back in my life so bad. We ordered food and the hours passed so quick, a few times I caught myself staring at her wondering if she had someone at home waiting on her. I knew I had to ask, “What's been going on since the last time I saw you?” I asked.
"You mean since I was 18 and went to uni?" She said with a laugh "I moved back in with my parents after 4 years and a huge student loan, I started a business fixing computers and re-selling them. Then my parents moved south and I decided to buy my childhood home from them, I have too many good memories here to leave this place behind just yet. You were a part of many of them" she adds and I blush.
“Really, that's pretty cool. You a part of my best memories from here” I say before asking "so is it just you in the house?".
“At first it was" she says, and I feel my heart sink. "But then I did up the other 2 rooms and now I rent them out on air b and b. I thought it might be nice to have a bit of company".
“What do you mean?” I asked assuming she must of had girlfriends in the past or be dating.
“Well" she seemed to be the one blushing now "After I got back I didn't really have any substantial relationships so I've been a bit lonely, I met a few girls at uni but nothing that led anywhere. But enough about me, what about you?"
So I tell her about my job in the city and how I'm now back here, that I am also single. Leaving out my impending motherhood, but when I finished talking Rai gave me one of her no nonsense looks. "My mother told you didn't she?" I said.
She laughed "of course she did, I love your mother to pieces but we both know she's a gossip." I can't help but laugh, Rai is probably one of the few people I would let call my mother a gossip. So I tell Rai about how I was in but had been with only men, and how my last relationship had become boring and dry. But unfortunately one of our last attempts had caused my current condition.
“What did he say when he did find out”, Rai asked chewing on some bread from her meal.
"At the point I found out he's already moved on and found someone else, so he tells me he will financially support the child but that's it."
"So because he found someone else he doesn't want to even meet his child? Well at least he is paying his way" Rai says "but this is why I'm glad I never mix with men".
"I'm done with them, the only relationship I've ever enjoyed I was with a woman" I say with a laugh.
"I thought you had only dated men since I went to uni?" She asked rasing an eyebrow.
"I did" I say shyly "but you know, we were a relationship kinda".
Rai gave me a shy smile before starting to slide from the booth, “I’m done with my meal, lets go for a walk so we can stretch our legs."
I had already finished my food and we had paid when we ordered so I had no issue. Leaving the booth I revealed my large round and low hanging belly, Rai looked at me for a while a faint smile on her face.
She held out her hand and we walked outside, “how about a walk down memory lane?" She asked.
"Sure" I say wondering where she means, the pub was in walking distance of both our homes so we didn't have our cars with us.
Rai and I swing our grasped hands as we walk, she asks me "so why didn't you wanna tell me about the baby. I mean you obviously wanted to see me, but you didn't want me to know about the kid?"
“Well, I wasn’t sure you would go running off into the hills, I guess I didn't want to bring up my romantic history before I was ready." After a few minutes I know exactly where we are heading, and I smiled but Rai seemed to be thinking.
"It doesn't both me that your bi or that you've been with guys, I don't expect anything from you. But at the same time if something happens then I'd welcome it, I know that for some a child counts as baggage but not for me. We are both adults who've lived lives since the last time we were together."
"I'd like something to happen" I say before I can stop myself.
To my surprise Rai stops walking and let's go of my hand before, wrapping me in a warm embrace. “I have waited so long to see you again” she whispers in my ear and I feel like I’m back where I belong.
We only part when my child gives Rai a large kick, “oh gosh sorry” I say embarrassed and disappointed the moment is gone.
“No worries” she said, “that was a strong kick, how much longer do you have till the baby is due?”
“Any day now” I confess “since I’m so close to home I didn’t think it would be a problem”.
“Well as long as you tell me if it’s go time”
“Oh you’ll be the first to know after the little one let’s me know” I joke taking her outstretched hand and we keep walking.
"Even if it didn't happen today, i mean like would you let me be here for the birth" she asks looking a little nervous as she asks.
I can't help but smile, "Rai McCoy holding me as I gave birth, now that would really be something. I think if your truely seroius about sticking by us, then I would like nothing more".
We stop walking again and she tells me “this child doesn’t have to be a symbol of a failed relationship, it can be the start of a new one. Between you and me, if that’s what you want. Don’t decide anything yet, but think about it okay?”
"I already know I want you to raise this child with me". She smiles and we keep walking.
But the thing is I don’t want to tell her but I just then feel I dull pain, a bit like when I am on my period. I know I just promised but I don’t want our time together to end yet, especially if she is taking me where I think she is. While we walk I use my other hand to rub my belly, trying not to let on how uncomfortable I’m suddenly feeling.
“Everything alright? The baby given you hell?” she asked laughing.
“Yeah” I said trying to put a smile on my face, I hope if I don’t think about it I won’t feel it anymore. But the prefect distraction takes my attention, the concrete path was turning into the dusty dirt one that lead to the river and forest we used to go to when we were teens.
The memories came flooding back for both of us it seemed as Rai had a huge grin on her face too, we walked down the steep path that lead to the wide river. “I can’t believe we used to run down this path, how did we not fall head over heals”.
“I guess we were too busy falling head over heals in other ways” I said clinging onto Rai to keep myself from falling. Rai looked concerned for a second, but before she could say anything I said “I’m fine, just my centre of gravity has changed. So, when was the last time you went to the river?” I asked trying to distract Rai.
“Right after I got back from uni for Christmas during my first year, but it never felt the same. You had gone to your grandmothers, this place isn’t special without you” she said softly. We stopped at the bottom of the path, “what about you?”
“All the time, I would come here to remember you and us I guess. You were more then a first crush, you were my first love” I said. It felt effortless to tell Rai these things.
“You were my only love” she said, “I guess I never got over you”.
“I tried but I never got over you either” I said, Rai stepped closer and then took my hand and pressed it against my belly her hand over mine.
"I can't believe your back in my life with a chance to be a family due any day now".
“I just don't want that family life to start right this moment ” I half joke and we kissed, my heart beat fast in my chest. I felt 16 again kissing my best friend, I felt 15 again seeing her for the first time. But now I was able to keep her and be with her forever.
Another mild cramp clenches in my belly, I just need to keep ignoring it for a while longer. Then I have an idea, "why don't we have a dip in the river? Just like when she were teens, the weather is perfect for it. We can just wear our underwear, we will dry in seconds afterwards." I know that the water will help with the pain, plus it eould be nice to relive the memories.
Rai looks at me for a second and shrugs "I mean I suppose it woukd be nice". We start removing our clothes, Rai helps me with mine and we wade into the water hand in hand.
When we get knee deep Rai takes a proper look at me, my arms naturally wrap around myself. I know I don't look as hot as I did as a teen, my belly covered in stretch marks and breasts now long and heavy with milk. But Rai seems to be looking at me like I'm a piece of art, "pregnancy suits you." She says softly, then continuing, "its a shame i didn't get to watch you grow and develop with child".
"There's always next time" I hear myself saying, but I wonder where it came from. A next time? I hardly have finished being pregnant this time.
“Next time, I like the sound of that” she said, then after a moment or two passed she looked at the water. I squeezed her hands and we get deeper into the river careful of the tide, we don't want to be swept away.
She held me protectively and it felt great to be in her strong arms again, my breasts against her forearms both covered in little droplets.
I was right about the water helping, but I knew that once we were out the water I would have to tell her it was time. But till then I enjoyed splashing and chatting more, but mainly we floated next to each other.
"My belly looks so huge" I said,
Rai laughed, "it's very pregnant, I think you look beautiful. I think your baby will be beautiful, I'm just so happy”.
“Me too" I say, then I don't know who kissed who but our lips connected, and we fell into a deep passionate embrace both trying to stsy afloat.
"Maybe we should get back on land" she saud stroking my face.
"NO" I insisted, Rai looked at me curiously.
Her hand slid smoothly over my belly, "everything okay?"
I nodded "please" I say, for a second I don't know if she knows that I'm begging for this moment to continue for a little longer before rushing to the hospital or if she just thinks I want to enjoy the river longer. She draws me close, holding me with one arm and exploring my body with the other. The memories just kept flooding back, her exploring my body wasn't just sexual it was her way of showing me how much she loved me.
As our legs intertwined as I pulled her hips against mine, "I got you" she whispered. We kissed again and again, until I let out a moan againt her lips. I knew just then that these were contractions, my labour was progressing. I had hoped that I could pretend it was a moan of pleasure but my face gave me away twisting in pain.
"I know it’s time, I felt your belly just harden" Rai said and I just nodded. Without a word Rai gathered me and got me to the river bank.
“I’m sorry” I said “I just wanted some time just you and me before...” but Rai shh’d me.
“It’s okay, I understand. But lets get you to my car so we can get you to the hospital”. She helps me get dressed before I watch he dress herself, so rough compared to how gently she helped me get dressed. I felt my belly tighten again and Rai came straight over, she kept a hand on my back as we climbed the steep path.
I kept stopping rubbing my low belly, “this isn’t helping, infact I think walking against gravity is making my labour progress”.
“Once we get on the flat I can carry you” she offered and we kept moving, I looked forward to sitting in the car once we were outta here. I tried to pant though the pain but it was getting more intense, “this baby is in a hurry too meet you” I said and Rai looked worried.
As soon as we got to the top of the slope I clung onto a bench, I started to feel a lot of pressure. I swayed my hips and released a groan I didn’t realise I had been holding inside of me. “Naaahhhhhhhh hooo hoo naaaagggggaaaaa”.
Rai went pale, “are you pushing?” she asked.
“No no” I reassured her, “I think I’m gonna be okay now that it’s a flat path”.
“Still want me to carry you?” she offered, but I shook my head. I didn’t want to risk any sudden movements that might squeze this kid outta me.
“Then lets hope walking isn't making it worse”, she said not hidding the worry that was conveyed on her face.
Just before I could respond I felt a contraction that was like a vice like grasp around my middle. "Ohhhhhh noooooo, no no nooooooohhhh gaaaahhhhhhh" I moaned. Rai put her hands on me to keep me steady, "gaaaahhhh the pressurrrrrrre its tooooooo muchhhhhhh" I moaned.
"Dam I wish we weren't so far from the main road, there is no way I can even explain to an ambulance crew where we are. But I honestly don't think we are gonna make it back home in time, let alone drive you to the hospital."
I put my head on her shoulder, "I wish we jad stayed down by the river, the water helped with the pain" I said glad my contraction was over.
"Me too, but we will have to make do with what we have around us. I don't think it's wise to move you much further". With that Rai carried me to a patch of grass in time for me to hold onto a tree as another contraction took over.
"Gaaaaahhhhhhh" I moaned "ohhhhh ohhhh GAAAAAAAHHHHH" and then something inside me realised as I felt my waters break and trickle down my leg before becoming a gush. I could feel gravity pulling the baby down into my birth canal, the primal urge to push took over. My legs bend as I sqaut slightly, I can sense Rai can see whsts happened as rubbing my back and letting me do my thing.
"That's it" she whispers, "just follow what your bodies telling you to do. Your gonna be an amazing mother, no wonder our baby is wanting to come meet you."
My contraction ends and I feel my body relax before it tenses up again for the next one. I keep pushing and breathing, it didn't take long until I felt the head against my cervix. "Gaaaaahhhhh, our baby is about to start crowning".
"Don't push anymore, we need to remove your panties" Rai reminded me.
"TAKE MY DRESS OFF FIRST" I shouted agreeing I needed to be able to push the child out without my clothes being in the way. The dress was easy to take of but my panties was another matter, I was in such a deep sqaut at this point and there was no way I could straighten up. "I can't" I explained in the precious few seconds between contractions “it’s too late the baby's coming out.”
I couldn't fight it, now I was pushing I had to continue. My lips parted more and more as my baby crowned, soon there was a bulge between my legs. Rai was now on her knees behind me and I held the tree for support, she put her hand on the hard round mass that was our childs head as it emerged. "Thats it, keep going." She encoraged me as I strained to deliver the child, she held my underwear out the way as finally the head popped out of me.
“Make sure the cord…” I started to say.
"Don't worry theres nothing around the babies neck" she confirmed and I continued to push, now battling the shoulders. I moaned as the baby's shoulders were hard to birth, but then I was surprised as I felt the baby slide out of me.
Rai seemed ready as she caught the baby pulling my panties down in the process, I turned around and leaned against the tree. She handed me back the child as it started to cry it also pinked up. Both of us were speechless, looking down at the new life in my arm.
"You did it" she said, "our son, our first child".
I laughed "yes first of many I suppose" because we both knew that we made a great team and we couldn't wait to do this again.

XXX
"Iskall- Iskall slow down, I'm out of rockets!"
Iskall disappeared in the End fog, too far to hear Xisuma's cries. The Void was open and dark, seemingly dragging X down. He struck his last rocket, but it fizzled and died without igniting.
"Come on..." There was no land. No where. Only Void. It called. Shivers crawled up X's spine. Not again. Not again not again notagainnotagain-
Xisumavoid fell out of the world
X gasped, sitting up sharply. Ex held his shoulders gently. "Are you alright?! I'm so glad I made you sleep here before leaving!"
"I'm- I'm fine." X took a shuddering breath, staring into the floorboards under his feet.
"...I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault, Exy."
As the two sat in silence, there was a sharp knock at the door and quick steps coming up the stairs. Mumbo burst into the loft panting, worry in his eyes. "Exy, are you alright? Your texts sounded urgent, and since I was nearby..."
Ex moved to take his hand off X's shoulder, but decided against it. "I was... worried about X, but it's fine. You can go." He mumbled, embarrassed.
Mumbo sat in a wooden chair nearby, much to Ex's dismay. "Why were you worried about Xisuma? Falling into the Void happens all the time!"
"Have you ever seen me fall in the Void though?" Even saying the name made X shiver.
"I- I suppose I haven't. Why, does this mean something?" Mumbo furrowed his brow. "Does this have to do with your... origin?" Mumbo whispered, glancing at Ex.
Ex turned to Xisuma, who simply nodded. "I suppose we'd better tell someone."
"Fine, but you tell the story, I don't wanna," Ex said shortly.
X shook his head. "Fine. Promise you won't tell anyhermit until we're ready?"
Mumbo nodded, excited but nervous to finally hear the story of Evil Xisuma.
X sighed. "Where to start... I suppose it all started when I was first alone.
I was an admin, granted full power over my world. But, my world was empty. All the other admins I had talked to had people living in their world, but I didn't.
For a long time, I liked it. It was peaceful, calm. I could do whatever I wanted! I built houses, cities, nations. I built rustic, and modern, and everything in between. I filled them with animals and villagers to give them life. I terraformed the landscape, as far as the eye could see. But, after a while, even the creature sounds weren't enough to fill the silence. Months turned into years, and the silence grew upsetting.
I went rouge.
I killed every creature I had befriended. I burned every forest I had built by hand. I tore down every building I had made over the years. I was insane. I was unstoppable. I was powerful.
The world was destroyed. It was bedrock, as far as the eye could see. My sanity was destroyed. I had nothing left to give. I decided to end it all.
I jumped.
I wasn't sure what death from the Void would feel like, but what happened definitely wasn't death. The Void almost... caught me, in a way. I was saved.
I begged and pleaded- for death, for freedom, anything. And the Void responded.
Ask for what you truly desire.
I was confused. I didn't want anything. I asked for death. But the Void said no. I asked for freedom. The Void said no. What did I want?
A friend. I asked for a friend, and the Void agreed silently.
You may have your heart's desire, if you give us what we desire in return.
Well, what do you desire?
We cannot tell the secrets of the universe. What the Void gives, the Void takes away. Do you accept?
I accepted. Anything to be free and happy again.
Next I woke up, I was back in the overworld, everything rolled back. Back before I destroyed it all. Before I had built anything. But something was different.
A figure.
A lone figure on the horizon, coming towards me.
A real, live, human person.
I introduced myself as Xisumavoid. I added the 'void' part in that moment- out of respect, I suppose. The person didn't have a name, so we came up with one.
How about Donovan?
No, that's stupid. My name was cool, he needed a cool name.
What's cooler than Xisumavoid?
Well if I go by Xisumavoid, why don't you go by Xisuma? It's only the two of us, so it shouldn't matter too much!
And so it was: Xisumavoid and Xisuma, friends till the end. However, over time, as you probably expected, things started going downhill.
Xisuma started acting super irritable. He would yell at me, some days worse than others. We could argue for hours on end. His anger was uncalled for, and he did nothing to stop himself.
I wasn't without my faults either. I found myself short of breath often, struggling to keep up with Xisuma on our adventures. I complained constantly, which I regret now.
This cycle tore a rift between us: I couldn't keep up, and he would lash out in anger. I didn't know what to do, and I didn't want things to go back how they were before.
I jumped again. This time, I knew what to expect.
I want information. What did you do to me? And what about the angry Xisuma with me?
With every action the Void takes, an action must be given. The gift of your friend came at a price. He is one and the same as you.
What are you saying?
Your Xisuma comes from your own self. His passion is from you.
I don't understand.
We have given, now you must take. Go.
And I woke up again, the world rolled back. The 'Evil' Xisuma faced me with hatred. How dare I go to the Void without his permission!
I'm my own person, unlike you! You're made of part of my soul, the Void told me so! You aren't real!
He didn't like that.
The hot-tempered Xisuma attacked me, and we fought for a long time. We were the same. He was my passion, my hatred, my anger.
And he was angry. Tears fell from his face as he screamed. He was abandoned. The Void brought him to life, and tossed him aside. The Void is heartless. And then I left him too. I left without telling him, left to the Void, his enemy. He cried and begged and I couldn't console him.
He was hurt, lonely and afraid.
I tried to comfort him and apologize, but he wouldn't accept. He ran, but I couldn't keep up, just like always. I was alone again. Just like always.
I resigned to my fate, having driven away my only friend and literal other half. In my free time I learned complicated redstone and technology. That's when I made this suit for myself! The mask helped me breathe properly, and I was finally able to explore as I pleased.
I roamed for years, not quite sure what I was looking for. The generic trees blurred together, the landscape growing flat and dull. Everything was pointless without someone to do it with. The idea of building a nation didn't excite me like it used to. Until I found him again.
He ran to me, and we hugged for a long time. We apologized. He admired my new armor, and I taught him everything I had learned. Soon, we had matching sets! Mine was green, after my connection to the world around me. His was red, after his temper and energy.
We lived happily for a long time after that. Just two good friends, adventuring and building together, just like before. Tensions were high sometimes, but we always worked it out.
And then people arrived.
They came from nowhere, yet here they were! I wanted to welcome them with open arms. I had been alone so long, I craved more human contact. Xisuma, however, disagreed. He wanted to keep them at a distance; he was afraid of being abandoned again. After much debate, I introduced myself, and Xisuma wasn't seen for a very long time after that- although I always suspected he never went too far.
Occasionally one of my new friends would ask me about loading errors and spawn rates in their farms. Even as the admin, sometimes I wasn't sure of the cause, so I blamed 'Evil Xisuma' who supposedly roamed the lands.
The joke was ongoing in our growing community, and apparently Evil Xisuma heard about it at some point. He confronted me in a fit of anger, and it ended in many, many scars- physical and mental.
After that, we split ways permanently. I suppose they say time heals all wounds, huh? Now here we are, arms around each other again!"
X hugged Ex tightly, who sighed but didn't pull away.
"Wait, hold on," Mumbo shut his eyes, running through the story again. "So X went to the Void, the Void split him into good X and bad X, and that's-?" Mumbo searched for clarification.
"You've got it! We were technically one person once!"
"And that's why you wear the mask, huh?"
"Well, I did. I don't need it much anymore, it's mostly aesthetic." X chuckled and removed his helmet, smoothing his hair.
"I never needed it for health reasons, but I feel better keeping it on..." Ex muttered.
"He's self-conscious of the cool scars I gave him," X said with a wink and a nudge.
Ex shoved him back. "Not true! I just don't like people asking about them, is all. They're still cool."
"Wow, I had no idea, I'm so sorry. Did- Did you talk to It just now?" Mumbo asked with concern, but curiosity.
X laughed. "No, I've only spoken to the Void once after these events," X grew distant in his thoughts. "Although I suppose that's another story altogether, haha!"
"Well, I'd be willing to listen if you want to tell it some day. For now, I'd probably better go. Thank you for telling me Xisuma! And it's nice to get to know you better Exy." Mumbo left with a genuine smile.
"...I can't believe you just told him..." Ex shook his head.
"He's been a friend for a long time, Exy, he deserves to know. And you deserve love."
"Blegh, don't get mushy on me now."

Author: RuckyStarnes
Pairing: Sam Wilson x Natasha Romanoff
Warnings: flirting?
Words: 1,457
Summary: Natasha takes Sam back to her place
It was a rare occasion for the team to be out of tower and enjoying themselves elsewhere. Tonight was one of those rarities as the team met out at a local bar for drinks. Tony was busy shooting darts with Rhodey. Thor became fascinated by the jukebox in the corner, trying to find something he would be interested in. Bruce and Wanda were shooting pool, the former teaching the latter the game. Vision opted to stay at home, and Sam sat at the bar with Steve swapping stories about being in the army.
Sam took swig from the beer bottle he was holding and nodded at what Steve was saying, only half listening. He was too busy looking at the redhead that just entered the bar with Barton. He hasn’t seen Natasha in months since she left to go on a solo mission for God knows what and where. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t find out what her mission was, or how she was doing.
“Sam?” Steve asked quizzically, putting a hand on Sam’s shoulder. His brow was furrowed and his face had a look of concern on his face. “Did you hear me?”
“Nah, sorry man,” Sam apologized, forcing his attention on his friend. “I just saw that Natasha is back.”
Steve smirked at him and took a drink of his own beer and shook his head. “Why don’t you ask her out already. She doesn’t bite,” he quipped.
Sam chuckled and followed suit with his own beer. “I know Cap. But ain’t she with Banner?” His eyes flickered back to the redhead to get a full take on what she was wearing: a knee-length burgundy and black dress, a cropped and fitted leather jacket and matching pumps. Her red hair that was one of his favorite things about her, and the reason why he called her Red.
“Hey, Red.”
“Sam?” she asked, as she spun around to come face to face with him, her smile widened, a rarity that happened. She brushed her her hand down his forearm as her green eyes connected with his, sending a shiver down his spine.
They spent the next few hours catching up on what she had missed out on while she was gone over drinks. Stark getting into trouble with Pepper on how many suits he was making (again). Nathaniel walking and rest of the team kids visiting the Barton farm. Steve dating again.
Sam missed her laugh and smile, and he didn’t realize how much he did, until she had a permanent one on her her face. It made his stomach flutter and he found himself smiling as well. Her hand occasionally would touch his forearm or thigh as they sat at the bar continuing to catch up.
“So, have you found anyone while I was gone?” Natasha asked, taking a sip of her martini, her green eyes shone with something Sam couldn’t quite put his finger on.
“Me? Nah. You know me Red,” he chuckled, “it’s hard to find someone with a shared life experience.”
Natasha snorted and shook her head. “You sound just like Rogers,” she hiccuped, causing her hand to fly to her mouth and a giggle followed. Sam loved seeing this side of her, the part she keeps hidden from nearly everyone on the team, and it only shows when she’s had enough to drink.
“Hey Sam, let’s dance! It’s been forever since we’ve danced together,” she exclaimed, giving him a big smile as she grabbed his hand and led him to the opening of the floor. “Hey Thor, could you put something on?” she asked the blonde god who obliged and put on a mid-tempo song. Natasha started to dance next to Sam as the music played, neither one making a move to touch the other, but the distance between the two was minuscule.
The rest of the night went just like that. Sam was having a great time hanging out with Natasha again. They did a few shooters, danced a bit more, and talked with the others, but mostly with each other. Finally, the bartender called for closing, and they were still talking about random missions they have been on, stories they both have heard several times, but neither one was ready to call it a night.
“Are you still bunking with Rogers?” Natasha slurred slightly as the lights came up on full blast and the music stopped. She pushed a stray red strand behind her ear, her cheeks flushed from the alcohol and dancing.
“Yeah, why?” Sam asked as he signed the white slip in front of him then putting his card in his wallet.
“C'mon,” she whispered excitedly. She grabbed his hand and dragged him out of the bar to the street, hailed a cab and got in, beckoning Sam to follow her. He let out a sigh and got in next to her and he was taken aback when she told the cabbie her address, only knowing it from reading her file when he first joined the Avengers. “What?” she asked nonchalantly, her green eyes twinkled with what he thought was mischief.
“Nothing,” he answered and he smiled a little when her delicate, yet deadly, hand found its way into his, her fingers intertwined with his. They sat in silence as the cab made its way to her apartment. When they reached the destination, Sam moved to pay the cabbie, but Natasha beat him to it, and paid the driver and got out with Sam followed suit.
Grabbing his hand, she led him to her apartment. She managed to unlock the door with ease, despite on the intake of alcohol she had. Once inside, Sam finally got to see a part of her he was dying to see. He saw paintings all around the apartment.
“That one is a Galakhov,” she nodded towards the painting on the wall by the coat rack. “It’s called July on the Volga River. One of my favorites by him.” She took off her jacket and hung it up on the coat rack and continued into the room. “That one,” she pointed to a painting over the fireplace in the living area, “is Levitan’s Birch Forest. And I have an Aivazovsky in my bedroom called Storm.” A smile was plastered on her face as she took off her heels, settling down on the couch.
Sam made his way over, sitting down next to her, his arm went behind her head to rest on the back of the couch. “I didn’t know you had a hobby,” he breathed out, looking at her.
“Well,” she said, “most are Russian artists. Just to remind me that some things that come out of Russia are good.” Her smile faltered and it tugged at Sam’s heart when she looked at him, her smile dimmed from her thinking of some thought she wasn’t going to share.
He cursed himself for showing interest in something that would dim her happiness. He found his hand resting on her cheek, his thumb softly stroking the apple of her cheek, eyes searching hers. Before he could think twice, he leaned in and gave her a soft kiss on her lips. When he pulled away, he blushed. “Sorry Red, I shouldn’t have –” but he wasn’t able to finish his thought as Natasha’s lips crashed into his in a heated kiss, Natasha clearly dominating as she climbed into his lap.
Her cool fingers worked the buttons of his charcoal dress shirt as her lips peppered kisses across his jaw and her hips gyrated against him, causing a moan to escape his lips. “Red,” he groaned as she sucked on his sweet spot by his ear. “We shouldn’t. We’ve been drinking –” and he was silenced for a second time with her lips to his, drowning out all voice of reason.
Natasha pulled away slightly breathless, chest heaving and her eyes fixated on his. “Wilson, I want this. Youwant this,” she whispered, as she ground down into his lap, causing his hands to grip her hips, pulling her down harder against him.
“Fine,” he growled, his eyes refusing to leave hers, “but let’s take this into your bedroom. I wanna see that Aivazovsky afterward.”
A smirk formed on her lips as Sam adjusted his grip on her as he stood up from the couch. “Door to the right of the fireplace,” she whispered into his ear before took the lobe in between her teeth in a light nip.

Cayde-6 x Reader: The Trigger Ch. 3
Word count: 1904 Pairing: Cayde-6 (Destiny) x Female Reader Contains: Rating eventually up to mature/explicit. Cayde being Cayde, hunting, trips into the EDZ, bickering

Confidence usually grew with experience and experience was more valuable than Glimmer outside the walls of the Last City. The inhabitants of the wilds only traded in lives.
The bow string tensed in a swift, fluid motion with no time for thoughts to surface. Sharp gaze found its target quickly and stayed on it. There was almost nothing that could stop the predator about to pounce on its prey. And success always felt good.
Success, when your life literally depended on it, felt even better. The sweet rush of adrenaline, all instincts strained to their maximum capability. The focus. Your quickened but steady heartbeats were the foundation of the effort. Your body was the actor.
For the time of an exhale, the forest around you was still and silent. Only the sharpest ears could’ve been able to hear the air splitting. The mild pumping of adrenaline pounded in your ears with each beat as you waited.
Cayde’s admiring inhale of surprise was the first sign that your arrow had hit its mark. Not surprising, but satisfying nonetheless. The deer was taking its last breath as Cayde hurried to release it from its suffering.
“Nice shot!” he complimented and you saw how he eyed the bow in your hands with a glint in his optics. The background noise returned with a snap.
“Thanks,” you said quietly and looked over at the animal. It was a female of average size, probably a bit on the older side. Its movements had been slower than of the one from before. An easy kill, but it was probably for the best. Some other predator would’ve soon snuffed its life out.
As usual, you clicked on the communication device in your ear and waited for someone to answer. After the Guardian had made rounds around the EDZ, the connections had gotten a lot better. Begrudgingly you had to admit things would’ve been a lot worse without her. It was hard not to be thankful, especially since everyone around you, Suraya included, seemed to worship her.
“Come in,” a familiar voice from the survey unit replied. He wasn’t a Guardian, but he had worked at the Tower before the invasion attack. That didn’t make you like him more.
“Ready for transmatting,” you said as you eyed the deer. It was a good catch. You had been lucky.
“Copy that. Just a moment…”
You waited for a few seconds, trying to ignore the look on Cayde’s face. His gaze was glued to the bow in your hand and his head was tilted in a thoughtful gesture.
“Ready to receive whenever.” A hint of an amused chuckle got through the coms. “You were quick today.”
You didn’t reply but drew in a sigh.
Cayde’s Ghost circled around the animal and projected a transmat beam over it.
“Transmatting now,” Sundance said.
The comm device buzzed and clicked once in your ear before the clearance order got through. It was another thing that was hard to admit but having a Ghost along in the wilds did have its benefits. Unfortunately, it was always a package deal with a Guardian.
You let your posture relax and turned to Cayde.
He jumped to his feet from the ground and cheered. “We’re a good team! High-five! No? Okay. No high-five.”
You left him hanging and continued walking. A small pool of blood was all that was left of the deer and you felt relieved in a sense. It wouldn’t matter if you didn’t find anything else to hunt that day. Your daily quota had been hit for several upcoming days.
“Alright, that’s it then?” Cayde asked in a hopeful tone and swept dirt off his backside.
You bit your lip and let your eyes wander around the forest. The sun was still high, and the sky was clear. It would be a shame to waste such a clear day but staying in the wilds with Cayde wasn’t tempting either. Going back early for a proper rest wouldn’t be so bad once in a while. The Farm had nothing to worry about food-wise so there was no sense in trying to find more prey than what was currently needed.
“I guess,” you said when you couldn’t think of anything better to imply the hunt was concluded for the time being.
“Sooo, we go back now?” Cayde inquired.
You shrugged while walking. “You can stay here if you want.”
He hurried after you. “I know I said it already, but I’ll say it again: Great team. Us.”
“I don’t really do team,” you replied dubiously. It almost felt bad to shoot Cayde’s enthusiasm down like that, but you weren’t up for a bonding session with a Guardian.
“Okay, let’s just stay in the basics, then. I’ve got your back and you’ve got mine. That sort of thing.” He wasn’t ready to give up and as annoying as it was, it was slightly moving.
“I won’t hesitate to leave you to the wolves.”
“Ouch!”
Almost a full minute of walking in silence ensued with Cayde grinning behind your back.
“Can I say something else?” he asked, definitely not about to wait for your permission, “It’s been kinda rough for these past few days, but you’re making it hella lot easier for a lot of people.”
You cast a sideways glance at his sincere tone.
“Right. Where’s this coming from?” you asked.
Cayde shook his head, amused. “Can’t take a compliment, can you?”
“Not really.”
“Anyways, this was great. I’m looking forward to the next trip already. Now how far is the Farm? I’m craving a sandwich…” Cayde babbled, his voice trailing off in your ears as you focused on finding the right path.
Having someone cheer for you had left an unknown sense of warmth. You didn’t know how to deal with something like that. You quickly settled into the familiarity of ignoring most of what Cayde was saying, but his presence no longer felt like having a pebble in your shoe. It was almost comforting to hear someone talking as you trekked through the woods. And he didn’t expect you to reply anything besides the occasional mumble.
It was weird. As if he was constantly trying to cheer you up.
After walking for over an uneventful hour, Cayde began to pester you about taking a break.
“Oh man, my legs are killing me!”
He slumped onto the trunk of a fallen tree. You gingerly followed him, leaving a wide gap between you two.
“I don’t know how you do this every day,” he continued, blue optics fixated into you.
The forest around you was still and silent. Apart from the occasional chirping and faint rustling, the gentle wind blowing between the trees was the only sound. The midday wasn’t popular time for animals to be moving around.
You stretched your legs, reaching your fingertips towards your toes. “You’re just out of shape, Mister Vanguard.”
“Oi! That’s unnecessary and rude. Aaand probably true,” Cayde admitted with a chuckle that you joined into without realizing it.
It was good to stop to just breathe the fresh air once in a while. It was rejuvenating. You reached your arms up towards the sky and breathed in deeply.
Cayde cleared his throat.
“There’s something I wanted to ask.”
You turned to look at the Exo, brows lightly scrunched in suspicion. “Then ask.”
“What if…” Cayde began in a sly tone and it already drew a slight sigh out of you.
“Yeees?”
“Let’s say I wanted to, uhh, pull my weight here. What should I do?” He stared at you, completely, uncharacteristically serious.
“Stay out of my way,” you wanted to say but bit your tongue. If the Guardian really wanted to make himself useful, you shouldn’t shoot him down. Or Suraya would shoot you down as soon as she would hear about it.
Cayde looked at you intently, waiting for a reply.
“You need a bow,” you finally said.
“YES!”
“Talk to Hawthorne about it. Tell her I said so.”
“I will. Thanks.” He pointed finger guns at you and you rolled your eyes, hard. “Y’know how I said I’ve missed going out? They can never make me go back in.”
“Who’s ‘they’?” you asked, though the answer obviously included the Vanguard Commander.
Cayde shrugged. “Zavala and Ikora, I guess? Okay it hasn’t been that bad, but still…” Cayde looked up to the sun peeking behind the treetops.
Your gaze lingered on the happy expression on his face. Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all.
“Hey, are you hungry? I think I still have a snack bar in here somewhere…” Cayde shoved his hands into his pockets and pulled out something wrapped in bright green. “Wanna share?”
You cast a dubious look at him. “Is that what you eat in the City these days? ‘Cause I’d rather starve.”
“What? Oh no, we do have real food. Like… ramen!” Cayde suddenly looked dreamily at the sky, the snack bar still hanging in his hand. “Man, I miss ramen.”
“So I’ve heard. Like a nine thousand times during these past few days,” you quipped.
Cayde turned to look at you and snapped the bar in half. He offered the food to you. “Well, if things turn out as well as they should, I’ll treat you a bowl when this is over.”
You were taken aback by his sudden offer and the wistful tone. Maybe he really did consider you a some sort of friend? You accepted the bar. It tasted like paper, so no surprise there.
“You think it’ll go down in your favor? Things are looking pretty bad for you guys…” you asked quietly as you munched the snack bar.
“Of course! You’ve got nothing to worry about,” Cayde said instantly, “Zavala is on it. Ikora too… And we have the Guardian. We could really have a shot at turning this around. Don’t you think?”
You cast your eyes to the forest floor and pursed your mouth into a thin line. You shouldn’t have asked. The snack bar was crumbling in your grip.
Cayde squinted at you. “What?”
Your eyes snapped up to look at him, realizing your reaction had been utterly suspicious. “Huh?”
“What’s with the long face?” he asked.
“Nothing.”
“You don’t like Guardians but–”
“That’s not it!” you yelped. “I do want you to get the City back.”
“More room for you in the forest, eh?” Cayde tossed the leftovers of the bar into his mouth. He didn’t sound too convinced. “I don’t know who rubbed you in the wrong way, but not all Guardians are that bad. Look at me, for example! I’m great!” He pointed at himself with a thumb.
“’Not all Guardians…’” you muttered under your breath. Cayde was right, of course, but you really didn’t want to continue talking about it.
“I’m curious, y’know,” he said in a vain attempt at making you talk, but it only made anxiety rise bile into your throat.
“I bet you are.” You hopped off the log and shook your legs a bit. “Let’s go.”
“What? Already? It’s been like three minutes since we sat down!” Cayde whined but jumped down too. He didn’t really have a choice. Or he did, but that one was to anger Zavala by getting separated from you and getting lost in the wilds of the EDZ. And Cayde was rather fond of the last life the Light had left him.
“Okay, wait up! I’m coming!”

Dec 22
Words: 761
You pulled the fluffy blanket further up to your chin and cuddled against Pete’s shoulder searching for a little warmth. White snowflakes drifted by, and cool wind brushed against your cheeks. The quiet, bright jangle of the horses’ harnesses mixed with the stamping of their hooves and the cracking of the snow underneath the runner of the horse-drawn sleigh. You looked over to Pete, who had a dreamy expression on his face as he watched you enjoy the ride.
It had been a normal Saturday morning, and you had expected to stay home, read a little, listen to some music, cook, and watch a movie after that. But Pete had had other plans. You had been entirely clueless what he had planned when asked you to put on your fluffy coat and some warm scarf and hat. Of course you had asked what was going on, but he had just smiled mysteriously, and told you it was a surprise. Honestly you had been a little suspicious. You knew Pete long enough to have lived through some of his surprises, and these hardly ever ended well for all participating parties.
Your confusion only grew as he pulled into the court of an old farm, and disappeared in one of the stables, leaving you in the car on your own. When he came back out, followed by an elderly man who led two horses, who pulled a sleigh, you had jumped out of the car, barely able to believe it. Pete had engulfed you in a hug as he explained he knew how stressful the Christmas holidays would be because of all traveling around to meet family, and he wanted to spend some alone time with you before everyone grew sick of the Christmas spirit.
Now you were cuddled together with several blankets in the back of the sleigh, while the coachman directed the horses through the white forest. Small snowflakes floated through the air, sticking against the wooly blankets, and melting when one of them landed on your skin.
Pete reached his hand out from underneath the blanket, and brushed a strand of hair out of your face, tucking it underneath your hat. His expression was so soft and loving as you had not seen in a long time. He had been under a lot of pressure lately, and you did your best to help him, but most of it was concerning his music. All you could help with that was make sure he got to work undisturbed, and got something to eat every few hours. Having him by your side now, so relaxed and happy, made you feel incredibly relieved, knowing that he would not go into the holidays this stressed.
It felt good to spend some time alone together. It was not expected that anyone talked, there was no need to. The coachman quietly sat in the front, only occasionally mumbling an order to the horses, giving Pete and you some privacy.
“Thank you for this surprise,” you whispered, leaning over to Pete, and pressing your cold lips against his.
He smiled into the sweet gesture, and wrapped his hand around the back of your head, holding you close to kiss you again before allowing you to pull away.
“You were scared I’d take you to some questionable sports event again, weren’t you?”
“Well, it wouldn’t be the first time,” you answered, and sank back against Pete’s shoulder, into his embrace.
“I know,” he giggled, gently kissing the top of your head.
“I’m just glad we got some time off before the whole family stress starts on Monday,” you mumbled, lifting your chin so Pete had an easier time tucking the blanket, which had slipped off when you had sat up to kiss him, back around you.
“I thought we could need it, a date, just the two of us, a little more romance, before my mum comes over. You know how attention seeking she can be,” Pete explained.
“Your mom is harmless compared to mine,” you reminded him, making him giggle.
“I don’t wanna say that’s true, but that’d be a lie,” he shrugged.
After that you fell quiet again. Pete wrapped his arm tighter around you, allowing you to snuggle closer to his chest. And while the sun sunk behind the hills, casting orange light through the trees against the snow, which sparkled magically, the rustling of the wind in the branches, the jangle of the harnesses, and the cracking of the horses’ hooves in the snow were the only sounds that broke through the peaceful winter evening.
