2020.12.16 The World You Live In at Zepp Nagoya, 2nd event report

For this one I was sitting in the last row on the 2nd floor😂 but the view was good, especially when watching the live footage.

This time Takabayashi also joined, he sat on the left, and we again got Die and Toshiya, with Fujieda on the right who again acted as the MC.

F again started the talk with the topic of the show without audience and Ochita. He asked band members about the flow of working on the songs, which to choose, how they decided to go with a song like that for a single. D replied that they make many songs for albums, when they work on the singles they want them to connect somehow, and he thinks they were able to do that.

T: what he said.

Next F again brought the merch items, saying he was wearing Die's mask, he liked it black.

D: it's a mask you can wear easily.

F: (struggling) ne...si...cessity.

D: again.

F: necessity.

(just leave him alone😂)

D: some people might find girls wearing black masks scary, so I added a bright element (to make it easier to wear).

(...but one of them says HURT???😂)

D: Ta(kabayashi), can you say 'necessity'?

Ta: not gonna play this game.

Then they laughed a bit about 'ビッグピックキーホルダー・biggu pikku・big pick'

T: which colour is the rare one?

F: I think they're all same.

T: how can you use it?

F: attach it to your bag etc I guess? You should know as a producer!

T: I guess I will use it as my pick at our next show.

F also brought items produced by other members, handing Shinya's bottle to T.

F: S also posted video promoting it on his instagram. It's really tiny.

T: how many of those I can drink in one day? (?)

D: but it is a perfect size for a bag.

Then F handed the pouch produced by Kaoru to D.

D: I guess masks can fit in, pick keychains can fit in, bottle can fit in, anything can fit in. 😂

F: there are 5 different merch items,please get them all.

After this it was time for the questions submitted by fans again.

D: ok, got one, from Kumi-san...

F: Tommy-san?

D: what? Why would you bring the boss up? It's from Kumi-san from Kagawa. 'please tell us your memory from Kagawa'.

F: we went there on tour last September.

D: Takamatsu, right? I remember I was watching TV at the hotel, not going for dinner... ah no, I got a take out, chicken, a big one, I was eating it alone.

F: what about you, T?

T: hmmm, I guess udon?

F: you eat udon a lot.

T: I eat everything. It was good then.

F told a story about playing around when waiting for band members to get ready to leave (Kaoru), he imitated Shinya playing drums. He said it was very embarrassing so he remembers it very clearly. Did S upload a video of that on his Channel?

T: 'please tell us your good and bad points of Fujieda'. He can eat anything, everything tastes good for him? As for bad points, everything tasted good for him?

(everyone laughed)

D joked that instead of getting 'good point' (like a grade at school) he has more 'passable points'.

D: 'can you tell us about your outfits today? I noticed that Toshiya's socks are very cute!'

T got surprised people noticed something like that, his red socks. F said that most likely a fan who attended the 1st slot noticed and sent that question.

T: I received them, they are just red checkered socks.

Ta: 'what kind of bath salts do you use?'

D: recently I don't use any (then he joked about the smell of old guys at the gym?)

T: I don't really use it.

They teased F for playing with the foam in the bath.

Then D talked about some gel type bath Kaoru recommended him, at Fukuoka during the tour in the past (?)

Ta commented that when hot the water in Tokyo smells. Water in the countryside like Nagano is better quality.

F: 'what song did you listen to the most during pandemic? It can be an artist.'

D: Kimetsu one?

F: 'Kousui' is also played everywhere.

they also said they listen to dir songs. D said he listens to the setlists from the audiostreams and T and he joked a lot about not remembering some of the older songs, like 'we made this??'😂 they also talked about the flow of songs.

T: 'how did you decide the members for each venue?'

Ta: I thought about many factors before deciding.

F: basically Ta decided it.

Ta: I thought about who should go where, who to pair together, about who went to which event in the past.

D: I remember we had some event at a department store in Nagoya.

T: at Parco, there was a signing event at Tower Records. At the same time there was an event I liked? ...no one knows it? Sorry, I guess you're all too young, there's a generation gap here.

T: 'do you have any plans for shows next year?'

They explained that the situation is not looking good and shows have big chance being postponed.

F: but we are thinking about the things we can do. But those two people definitely want to play a concert.

T: this many people are waiting so we have to.

D talked about getting out of Tokyo and ??

Ta: 'it suddenly got really cold. Could you tell us any stories about snow or cold weather?' (he added joking) Nagano stories?

T: you think you're funny.

F: but I love oyaki (it's famous in Nagano stuffed dumpling, grilled).

T: I saw a cockroach for the first time only when I went to Tokyo and then Kyoto. Nagano is too cold for them.

F: Hakkaido too.

(Toshiya, I really feel ya, I've only encountered roaches after I came to Japan💀)

they talked about fighting with them, D used something to immobilize them (???)

T: they are so big. When we filmed Clever Sleazoid video I just stepped on one.

F (laughing): went 'kyaaaa' and stepped on it!

T also talked about the old story when they just started a band and they came to Nagano to meet T, there was a lot of snow then and all band members got super excited because of it, starting to play in snow. T's mother took a photo of them, that photo is still at T's home at Nagano.

F: who was driving then?

T: Aki-san, from the previous company.

D: I didn't know it gets all snowy like that.

Then they talked about old simple phones without cameras and cameras they used, heavy bricks.

T: sorry, generation gap again.

F: what happened to the 'cold' topic? Why roaches???

Ta: we can do 2 more questions.

T: F, why did you ???

F told us a story about almost being in a traffic accident on a highway driving from Nagoya when suddenly their tyre got a hole, but thanks to his super special technique he could stop the car.

D: how long was this whole situation?

F: one minute. Thanks to my special technique.

they also talked about Shinya driving😂

Next, T: 'why did F use a name Rei with ShibireBajiru (band where F's played drums)? Question from Toshiya from Tokyo'

But F's explanation was about the image names have and that Rei has a strong image. About which T and D teased him a lot.

As the last question they talked about alarm clocks, 'can you wake up without alarm clock?'

D: recently I can.

T: I can wake up when I can wake up.

F: ...so when you can't you can't?

T: ...(be quiet you)

D: so what time do you wake up?

T: 4 or 5, then I work.

D wakes up around 6~7

Extra question, F: 'what's your fav nabe (hot pot)?'

D: nabe?

F: for me it's motsunabe (offal hot pot). That place in Fukuoka.

T: you prefer miso type? Or soy sauce?

F: in the past Shinya gave me a very firm 'I don't need any of the miso one', he was so angry about food😂

F talked about the additional event online again and the announced video with virtual characters the previous day. Filming was done a bit earlier.

T: it was unexpectedly fun.

F: let's spend New Year Eve together.

Die: thanks for comming to the event, especially in such a cold weather. This was a safe way, the situation is not good, we can't hold shows at the moment, we want to make songs and work on the next album.

Toshiya: thank you for coming on a cold day. I'd like to say what I want, but it's hard because of this situation. The band is searching for the things we can do. Please wait for us. Next year, I want to stand on the stage in front of you (at a concert).

D asked T for the red version of the pick to take photo with it. He took it to his spot at kamite area, adding 'next year I will use it'.

Do you mean original content? Or fan art of Linkverse? I’ll answer both just in case...!

Posting your own au? I can try to share what I can, but it’s also a luck game for a large part.

I’ve been on the internet since I was 11, and have always been posting my art. I’ve always wanted some kind of platform and fame, but I have to be honest: I don’t think it’s something most people get on their first few tries.

This is going to sound very corporate, but you need to know what catches people’s eye, what is the amount of information they need to get interested, and in general what’s popular and so will have the most eyes on it at that moment and time.

I don’t think these are things you should necessarily chase. I think you should go from fandom to fandom as you see fit, and work on aus and art you like to create. That’s where you’re going to learn important skills for the time when you actually land at the right place at the right time. (In a fandom that’s popular, with an idea that’s exciting, and with the art skill to make it into a reality)

I also think “failing” a few times helps grow a thicker skin, but that might just be me. I’ve made a TON of things, trust me. Linkverse is my second success, and even now I’m like hmmm this is fandom stuff, I want to create something original.

I’m getting off topic-

My point is that to get attention for something it’s usually a long road of hard and sometimes painful work. You’re going to post art and it’s going to get 2 notes and you’ll feel like garbage. You’ll be posting all your ideas consistently and with good quality, and no rise in viewership will happen.

It’s a game and you sadly have to learn to play it, and handle losing. A lot.

But before you get too discouraged, I feel like “losing” is the wrong word to use here. For example, I’ve been posting comics since the very beginning. THEY SUCKED.

I got better, and changed fandoms and the goals of the comics, and slowly started getting more notes. I continued more, I had my own webcomic for a while. I learnt how to make a fully coloured comic page in an hour or so, which is a very useful skill I think.

Then I hit gold once, and my the adventure zone au comics got quite a bit of viewership! Woo! But that was a dying success, I believe Linkverse might be as well. People don’t tend to follow form fanon stuff to your original art blog in large numbers.

But what this does help with, is managing and audience and your own work schedule etc.

...I guess what I’m trying to say, is that people like easy to access content with bright colours and things that leave them thinking. However stuff like that is sort of an endlessly running away end goal.

Focus on the here and now, do things because they make you happy, try to learn to live without numbers and give yourself time. Big blogs can make it look so easy, but the road to have any kind of attention is a long and complex one.

Take every moment as a lesson, remember to take breaks, and love what you do! That’s my advice, I think.

BoAB September Survey 2020 Results

Okay gang, it’s the annual blog census results and analysis you’ve been dying to know, I’m sure! We had a grand total of 21 responses. Thank you so much for participating! Let’s go right into it!

DEMOGRAPHICS

I don’t really have anything super meaningful to say about the demographic information, it kind of aligns with what I expected. The biggest chunk of you are female between age 19-24, which means you are definitely drinking age in Canada and certainly in Alberta! Caesars for everyone! ...I mean, I don’t drink and a Caesar probably wouldn’t be my first choice, but the option’s on the table here.

(I realize having ‘30′ on two different options was a silly move) (I will fix that next time)

Thanks for responding to these questions whether you divulged this info or not. High five to all my Hockey Gender peeps out there (which was kind of my lame attempt at ‘gender is whack and idk what it is’ while still being on theme). If this question was framed badly, I’m happy to make changes next year. And yes the graph colours are a subtle shout out to my nonbinary pals :D

ALBERTA and YOU

So this question was a little bit over complicated and I will definitely rethink it for next year, probably splitting it into separate questions because sometimes one answer wasn’t enough (i.e. “Just Curious” doesn’t tell me whether you live in Canada or not- not that I would make you say, but it’s hard for me to tell whether you meant to check another answer and forgot or if that’s all you felt like saying). Overall, graphing this information as it is doesn’t feel like it helps me as much as I had expected?

This graph is far more enlightening and to the point: the vast majority of you have never lived in Alberta (or at least, said so! I forgot to put an option similar to “rather not say” above, for which I apologize!) Those of you who do live in Alberta live in one of the three biggest cities, and more of you in Edmonton, hehe. It is kind of funny, I sort of expected most people would be from Calgary!

Like I’ve said, it’s sort of incredible what a huge proportion of you are not from Alberta. Whether you’ve visited or not or have any consciousness of it outside of this blog at all, welcome, I hope you enjoy your stay! (...I say, currently sitting one province and a strait away from Alberta at this point in time).

Okay, the good stuff!

I was very rude and forced you to only choose a single favourite character.

There was some hometown loyalty here but it was clearly not exclusive, very disappointed in my fellow Edmontonians (I’m kidding. Mostly. Unless??)

And yes, the very last vote tipped the scales in Calvin’s favour this time, although it was quite evenly matched throughout the polling. Overall, there’s not much of a surprise here, it more or less matches the airtime each of these characters have had so far and I expect it to change a little as I learn more and draw more.

I was kinder with the next question and allowed you to pick as many as you liked, but some people still elected to choose one or go straight for their favourite.

Okay, I see what’s going on here! Pandemic’s got you guys down and you are desperate for a mountain vacation with Eleanor and Calvin. I admit, I have been seriously neglecting Eleanor for the most internationally recognizable of the Alberta municipalities (and dare I say... the most celebrated?). The people have spoken, and I hear you!

As for Calvin, huh, I can’t imagine why you want to see him so much. You want to see him suffer more at my hands? Is that it? Hmmm.

Also, I am not sure how I expected to interpret the “someone who hasn’t been introduced” mystery-character option. Do you guys want literally anyone introduced, or do you have a specific craving? Feel free to message me, anon or otherwise, if you want to speak more to that.

and yeah yeah i give ed too much preference, sue me ;)

Alright, the final questions I had included what to focus on for the coming year... I did tack on "All of the Above” to these results below.

I am oh so very pleased to tell you that this whole month of October is going to be dedicated to Character Profiles, and I will be wrapping up Madeline’s first profile page today. We are going to get (if I am able) a quick fact reference sheet, a relationship chart, and a sort of miscellaneous trivia/attractions page for each character so that I can keep all that stuff organized and consistent and you guys can enjoy future comics without wondering who is who or what they represent.

I was purposefully pretty vague about characters when I was starting this blog, partly because I wanted to see what I could get away with whether I had audience recognition or not, partly because I operate on kind of a “shoot first ask later” approach to things. I know that if I don’t just jump in and start writing that I’ll never post anything, so I’m happy to do this a little later in the blog’s life now that I have time to dedicate to fleshing these guys out.

I’m also happy to address more historical stuff, and a brief synopsis of each muni’s history will be featured in their bios to help frame any asks you might want to send about that. If you have any questions or a specific time period you are interested in, don’t hesitate to send an ask about it.

Finally, the question you’ve all been waiting for... who won The Battle this year?

Wonderful Tonight - Chapter 1

Story Summary:

On the first anniversary of the instantaneous biological metacrisis that created him, the same day he and Rose had been unceremoniously dumped in Pete’s World, the Doctor can think of a few gazillion different ways he would prefer to spend the evening, and the Annual Vitex Gala is not one of them. All he truly wants is to spend a quiet, intimate evening at home alone with Rose. But when Rose doesn’t acknowledge the significance of the date, the Doctor finds the strain and rejection he has worked so hard to overcome surfacing again, leaving him feeling vulnerable and insecure.

A song fic, based on the song Wonderful Tonight, by Eric Clapton.

Summary, Chapter 1:

Feeling out of sorts on the first anniversary of being left in Pete’s world with Rose, the Doctor is worried Jackie will blame him if they show up late to the Annual Vitex Gala, and frustrated that Rose isn’t ready to leave when he is.

It's late in the evening; she's wondering what clothes to wear

She puts on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair

And then she asks me, “Do I look all right?”

And I say, "Yes, you look wonderful tonight.”

The Doctor stood in the front hall of the little flat, peering at his reflection in the full-length mirror. He ran a tongue over his teeth, and tilting his head from side to side, critically assessed the controlled chaos that was his hair. Giving his fringe a final tweak, he stepped back and swivelled back and forth, his lip curling at the sight of the tuxedo. Well, at least his feet would be comfortable in the black and white Chucks he’d procured specifically for the occasion. After the last party Jackie had hosted, his feet had been aching for days, blistered and cramped by the uncomfortable leather dress shoes she’d insisted he wear.

Nope! Never again!

And especially not tonight of all nights. The day of his… weeeell, his first-ish birthday, he supposed, give or take the millennium’s worth of knowledge packed into his brain. He could think of a few gazillion different ways he would have preferred to spend this evening, and the Annual Vitex Gala was not one of them. The only thing that could possibly make it tolerable was the fact that he would be attending said gala with one Rose Tyler by his side.

One Rose Tyler who was distinctly not in the front hall, ready to go…

“Roooo-ooose! We’re going to be late!” He sent a little burst of annoyance along their bond.

He was usually the one who kept her waiting, primping his hair to untamed perfection. It was her own fault, really. Afterall, it was she who’d found a jar of Pompogix’s Hair Pomade (precisely as brilliant as the stuff he used to use in the Prime Universe). He could hardly be blamed for wanting to make good use of it. You couldn’t rush perfection.

Except in Rose’s case… she always looked perfect. Therefore, he reckoned, logically, there was no reason for her not to be ready to go.

He shuffled from foot to foot as he peered down the hallway to the bedroom. “C’mon, Rose! You know who Jackie’ll blame if we’re late. Me! I’m still recovering from the slap she gave me two bodies ago. I don’t fancy another one, ta!”

Rose’s head popped out from the bedroom doorway, a towel still wrapped around her hair, and her face devoid of make-up. Utterly gorgeous, but definitely not even remotely close to being ready for the gala.

“Blimey, the paps’ll have a field day with shots of you in that get-up.”

“Yeah, ta for that.” Her frosty reply was accompanied by the equivalent of a growl vibrating a warning in his mind and a dangerous little crease forming over the bridge of her nose. She grumbled as she disappeared back into the bedroom, but a few seconds later she called out, “Doctor! I need your help! Can you c’m’ere?”

She seemed a little flustered (as well she should, given the time). He couldn’t imagine how he was supposed to help. Nevertheless, he followed the sound of her voice into the bedroom and found her dressed only in knickers, sheer thigh-high stockings, and the towel on her head, poring over three gowns spread out on the bed before her. The sight of her topless might have been more enticing if he hadn’t been so frustrated.

“I can’t decide which dress to wear.”

“What the hell does it matter? You’ll look beautiful no matter what. Wear a bin bag if you like. Just pick something and let’s get a move on, before Jackie has my head for the centrepiece on the buffet.”

She huffed. “So glad I have you, then!”

“Oh, all right,” he relented, quite sure nothing good would come of him offering his opinion. He looked carefully at the three options, considering the pros and cons of each. “Wear the green one. It’s a festive colour and it’s sparkly. I quite like sparkly.”

“The green one? Really? Do you think so?” Rose screwed up her face, her nose wrinkling in distaste. “I kinda thought the sparkles were a bit naff, to be honest.”

“I knew it!” he growled through gritted teeth. He arched a judgmental eyebrow. “Why did you bother asking me my opinion? Is it some kind of test? A trap? A psychological experiment, perhaps? Hmmm?”

“Blimey, Doctor! Overreacting a bit, yeah?” Rose averted her eyes from him, glancing over the dresses again.

“Nope! I think you’ll find my response was perfectly calibrated to serve the situation at hand. You asked me for my input – which I gave quite willingly – and then, without a second’s consideration, you rejected my opinion out of hand. How am I supposed to react to that?”

Her hands flew to her waist as she turned to face him, a fierce, wolfish spark in her eyes. Her bare breasts jiggled temptingly, and suddenly any frustration was pushed to the back of his mind and he found himself forced to tamp down his body’s responses. Now was not the time for that sort of distraction.

“Oi! Eyes up here!” she snapped with a sharp tweak of their bond. (So, definitely not the time…)

His irritation wriggled back to the forefront, and with his libido conquered, he was able to retrace his earlier train of thought. “It wouldn’t matter what dress I’d selected; you’d have had some excuse not to choose it.” Oh, it felt quite satisfying to get another dig in.

“That’s not true.” Hurt transformed Rose’s face, and she placed a soft hand on his arm. Her love and sadness flooded through him. “I value your opinion, Doctor. I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t.”

As her lovely, soft, kissable lower lip wobbled, guilt gushed through him. He sighed. Despite his better judgement, he found himself spouting out more words of gala-gown wisdom. “How about the black one, eh, Rose? Classic! You can never go wrong with a black dress for a formal occasion.”

“Hmmmm… but black’s so dull. I mean it’s a beautiful dress, but it’s nearly Christmas, yeah?”

The Doctor gaped at her in stunned silence for a few charged ticks, then he threw his hands in the air. “I give up! I can’t win! Tell you what: I’ll be waiting in the lounge, planning my funeral. Jackie can throw another party to celebrate the occasion, and you’ll be able to wear the black dress to that.” He stalked away, ignoring Rose’s incoherent squeaks of outrage.

He needed to calm down. He was on edge and was letting little things get to him. He muffled his telepathic connection with Rose. Bombarding one another with negative emotions would be nothing but hurtful.  All he had truly wanted was to spend a quiet, intimate evening at home alone with her. This day held special significance for him.

That fact, in and of itself, came as a shock.

Never before had he bothered to observe the linear progression of his life; he’d never given it any thought. Even though he knew time progressed in a distinctly non-linear, wibbly-wobbly fashion, he had to face the fact that his time would now have a distinct end; there would be no more cheating death. Observing the passing years, taking time to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past and his aspirations for the future, had suddenly become something of the utmost importance. He wanted to celebrate the love he and Rose shared and how hard they had both worked over the past year to overcome the strain and rejection of being unceremoniously dumped in Pete’s World.

Instead, he once again felt redundant, useless… vulnerable, the unsettling image of Rose walking away from him at Bad Wolf Bay, rejecting him as he tried to win her favour, playing on auto-repeat in his mind.

The last thing he wanted to do was parade around at the Vitex Gala, hobnobbing and exchanging vapid small talk with vacuous socialites and tedious politicians.

He wandered into the kitchen. A nice cuppa was what he needed. The brilliant effects of the superheated infusion of free-radicals and tannins never failed to soothe him. A good, stiff drink would have been marvelous as well, but he’d learned the hard way, this new, more-human body was not very good at regulating the effects of excessive alcohol consumption. He’d be drinking plenty at the gala, later (if they ever got there); he needed to be careful not to overdo it. No, for the time being, tea would be just perfect.

He filled Rose’s mug as well, adding the perfect amount of milk (just a splash) and honey (a little, to cut the bitterness). She had her own demons to face on this particular day. Although… come to think of it, she hadn’t mentioned it, either the day – his birthday (that hurt a bit), or the demons – being abandoned by the other Doctor and, in turn, abandoning… him, the metacrisis (at least, initially). There were more closed doors in her mind than normal, but she hadn’t even given any overt hints of any anxiety through their bond. But even if she wasn’t worried, he still thought she would probably appreciate the gesture of the warm comforting beverage and it would give him a chance to apologize for his “overreacting”, however justified it might have been.

He returned to the bedroom and leaned against the doorjamb, mugs in hand, silently watching Rose as she sat at her little vanity, still in a semi-dressed state (although her hair was loose and dry now), carefully applying the finishing touches to her make-up. Analysing her reflection, she dabbed stray traces of crimson lipstick from the corners of her voluptuous mouth, then smoothed the concealer under her eyes. With a heavy sigh, she picked up her hairbrush, and pulled it through the soft tangles of her long, blonde hair. She’d allowed it to grow over the past year and it now reached almost halfway down her back. The doctor loved the silken feel of it between his fingers, loved the way it tumbled around his face when she rode him to their mutual bliss.

And, oh, that train of thought was no more helpful now than it had been earlier, but unable to resist the temptation, he stepped forward into the room. “Here, let me.” He took a gulp from his mug before setting both mugs on the vanity. He plucked the brush from Rose’s hand.  “Have a cuppa,” he offered as he gathered her hair in his hands and brushed out the ends at the back where she couldn’t reach.

“Oh, a cuppa would go down a treat. But I can’t. Just put on my lippie, yeah.”

Rebuffed again, he held his tongue. Rose hadn’t meant to be hurtful, but it seemed he just couldn’t do anything right. Although, it wasn’t like he was doing anything especially wrong... just a bit off-target, perhaps. He decided there wasn’t anything to be gained by making a fuss, but he didn’t trust his stupid gob to behave. It would be safer to just leave her to her grooming. He set the brush down firmly on the vanity and, pointedly removing her tea mug, moved toward the door.

“Doctor…?”

He turned back toward her, helpless to resist the sway she held over him. She’d always been his weakness… and his strength. She completed him.

“I was hopin’ you could braid my hair for me...”

“No doubt I could…” He arched an eyebrow at her.

“Would you? Please? Somethin’ nice and soft. You always make it look nice, yeah.”

“Will you hurry and get dressed if I do?”

“Oh, we’re not that late!”

He set her mug down again. “Not your life on the line, is it?” he snarked, but he was unable to keep a small smile from tugging at his lips.

As he gathered her hair in his hands, parting it with expert strokes of his fingers, she sighed her contentment and met his eyes in the mirror. “I’m sorry, Doctor. I love you,” she whispered.

He opened their bond, allowing his love to mingle with hers. “My precious girl, I love you too… but I’d like to be around for many more years to repeat that sentiment.” He granted her a teasing frown, and she responded with a cheeky kiss blown at his reflection. When he rolled his eyes, she chuckled and beamed at him, her tongue peeking out at the corner of her smile.

In minutes he had completed styling her hair, a long, soft braid that meandered down the back of her head. “It just needs… Oh, I know! You get your dress on, and I’ll be back with the finishing touches in two shakes.”

Leaving a bemused Rose in his wake, he rushed out of the bedroom to the kitchen. He had purchased a dozen red roses, intending to present them to her before leaving the flat that evening, but decided they would be put to much better use tucked into her golden plaits. He scrounged in the drawers for the kitchen shears and snipped several of the roses from their stems. He tucked one into the lapel of his jacket (he and Rose would coordinate) and gathered the rest of them up.

When he returned to the bedroom, he was stopped short (nearly spilling the roses from the cradle of his hands) at the sight before him: Rose, resplendent in a deep-red, satin gown. He licked his lips at the sight of her: the v-neck, off-the-shoulder bodice displayed just enough of the soft, round curves of her breasts; and the flowing, floor-length skirt sported a thigh-high slit that exposed the full length of a tawny, toned leg. She was absolutely captivating.

Shaking himself out of his daze, the Doctor swept behind her, beginning his task of nestling the flowers into her tresses. He couldn’t resist planting soft kisses to her bare shoulders and neck as he worked, and she encouraged him with soft hums, as each touch of his lips sent a surge of his arousal along their bond. With one last rose tucked into her braids, he placed a final kiss behind her ear and reluctantly pulled away from her.

“All done. Are you ready, then?”

“Almost…” She stepped back to the vanity and picked up the earrings lying there. She turned to him as she set them in her ears, her dress swirling around her. And then she asked him, “Do I look all right?”

“All right?” No words could properly express the vision of loveliness before him; he stammered, trying to find the right way to describe how she affected him, how in awe of her he was. What eventually came out of his stupid gob was the understatement of the year. He only hoped he had projected enough emotion along with his words for her to understand what he had really meant… “My darling, you look wonderful, tonight.”

Hardback or paperback - Both. For some books I love I NEED them in hardback. But my chronic pain makes heavy books hard to carry, so paperbacks are easier.

Borrow or buy - Buy. I have a problem.

Buy in a bookstore or online - I try and buy australian books in a bookstore, because buying local affects the percentage of royalties they get. But I am poor and I want more books, and also many of the books I want aren’t here. So online too. (I don’t buy online unless it’s international, generally).

Amazon or Bookdepository - Book Depisitory. It works out cheaper for postage to Australia.

Love-triangle or love at first sight - Agree with @imaginationallcompact here. I hate them both. Love at first sight takes a lot of work for me to buy, and it’s hard to suspend my disbelief. Love triangles need to burn in the fiery pits of hell.

Wall shelves or bookcases - I rent. Wall shelves? Are they a thing?? Bookshelves. When I am a rich author I will install bookshelves right into the walls of my pretty pretty house. But while I live in the real world, movable bookshelves.

Mass market paperbacks or large print books - MM paperback. Though I like the large format MM paperbacks you get with a lot of new releases here. Not large print, but a more comfortable and decent design really. 

Bad plot with good characters or good plot with bad characters - Character is plot, as any decent writing book will tell you. But I know what this question is asking. You can’t divorce it from genre though. What is considered a ‘good’ character in a romance book is not the same as crime fiction, and not the same as a slow literary novel - the latter of which is surely what this question might mean as an example of ‘good’ characters. But it’s apples and oranges, and the medium dictates what ‘good’ means in this context. That said, I do prefer character over plot, if we’re talking in basic terms. The literary character, over the kind in a ‘genre’ book. 

Booklr or Bookstagram - What the hell is booklr? Books on tumblr? I read and talk about books in too many separate places, I post them on instagram sometimes, but not as a rule. I’d rather talk to myself and a friend out loud about them.

Booklr or Booktube - eh. the above answer works fine for this too.

Contemporary or Fantasy - Contemporary. Fantasy as a genre has always been hard for me to read, as a rule. But I like some.

Fiction or non-fiction - Both. 

Buy a book based on the cover or the description - From the buzz surrounding it, from my knowledge of the author, from what other writers I talk to are saying. I have a good gut feeling generally. But mainly, I read the first few pages. The blurb and cover aren’t the creation of the author. The cover helps draw me in though, not gonna lie.

Alphabetical shelves or colour coordinated - Oh god. I need to alphabatise so badly. I actually shelve most by how much I like the book and where I want to look at it, and I actually know were everything is regardless of there being no rule for shelving. My comics/graphic novels are all in one place though, as are YA and Childrens. My books are my friends in a way, and I don’t want to break them up. I like my favourite novels sitting near my fave non fiction books. I like to think they get along well. When I eventually get a bigger place, and move shelves I will do a mass genre and alphabatising session though.  

Different sized books or matching sizes - Different. But it’s a controlled chaos, and they have to look good together. I don’t like too much sameness.

Matching covers / spines or non-matching covers / spine - What? when does this happen? with series? Like all of the same edition? I don’t buy series much, outside of some scifi and YA, so it’s not an issue. 

Marathon a series or read as released - It all depends on when you discover it doesn’t it? And when the book is the right thing for you at the right time. I don’t read many series though.

Movie or TV adaptation - God, neither. I read so many literary books. They don’t always translate to good films. TV tends to do a better job for sprawling novels though. It can accomodate sub-plots in a way that movies can’t, which is why so much is lost in translation to script.

Perfect adaption of a bad book or bad adaption of a perfect book - I hate film adaptations. I am only happy about them when a good book gets them, because it means the author will be getting increased sales. And that makes me happy for them. 

Zombies or Vampires - Vampires. I do not have a strong stomach for gore and zombies are full of it. That said, I am so. Sick. Of. Vampires. 

Vampires or Werewolves - Vampires. Or bloody neither.

Vampire or Fae - Fae. Kill me, I am so sick of vampires. 

Reading inside or outside - Both. 

Coffee or Tea - Tea at home, coffee when I’m out.

Eating while reading or not eating - I don’t want to get food on my books, so not generally. Unless it’s a trashy book I don’t care about. 

Bookmarks or random objects - Anything made of thin paper is good. As long as it sits neatly inside the book. Generally I use ticket stubs or postcards.

Dog-earing or bookmark - Do not even look at my books, you dog-earring monsters. I bet you’d get food on them.

Be your favourite character or be their best friend - My favourite characters tend to be awful people, so neither.

Be your favourite character or date your favourite character - Neither

Physical or E-book - Even if I am desperate for the book now, the cost of e-books tends to be worth being patient to just get a cheap paperback. I find them hard to process, as I read. 

Audiobook or ebook - Neither. But very rarely audiobooks. I feel like I am being talked at in a one-way conversation and I eventually tune out. Plus they’re too slow, or too fast, and you can’t linger on anything. 

Read in bed or on a chair - Both.

Series or stand-alones - Stand-alone

Duology or Trilogy - Stand-alone. But it depends. Sometimes the story is pushing it and really isn’t enough for a trilogy. See The Hunger Games. I really think it would have worked better as two books.

Reading in winter or reading in summer - o_O 

Read with music or without music -  would rather none.

Finish reading books you hate or stop reading mid-way - Depends why I’m reading it. But if the book is bad, and I am bored as hell I will stop.

Yearly book challenge or no book challenge - I hate book challenges. I will read what I want, when I want. 

Classics or modern books - Yeah, I don’t know what you mean by ‘classics’. To be pedantic and annoying. Do you mean, ‘Classical’? Like Homer and Seneca and Virgil? Classics, as in ‘if it was written a long time ago and endured, it is a classic’… (Dickens, Austen, Dostoevsky). ‘Modern’ is a term that has been used throughout the twentieth century and even before (I mean Madame Bovary is Modernist). I know you surely mean ‘Modern’ as in, ‘new releases of the last 10/15 years or so’. So I will shut up and answer because I sound like a wanker.

I went through a stage where I worked in a bookshop and read mostly new releases. But right now I am going back and reading anything that looks nice. So the long winded answer is ‘both’.

Translation: The Television: 20 Questions, 20 Answers

For the 20th anniversary of Hello! Project, The Television has been posting 20 questions and 20 answers with everyone in Hello! Project. It’s finally BEYOOOOONDS’ turn, and in this, Utano answers questions ranging from the meaning of her name, to who she’s close with in H!P. Enjoy, and please don’t repost without credit!

1. Tell us the meaning of your name! My name is Utano but, my older sister also has a name that's related to music and uses three hiragana characters. I really love music, and I grew up listening to western music and African-American music since I was little. They wanted a musical type of name, and this was a candidate for a three hiragana character name that matched my sister. Though I can't confirm it because I don't remember it, on the day that I was born, there was a special on an old lady who had turned 100 years old, and it seems like that old lady said her name was Utano-san. I was told that they wanted me to have a long, happy and fun life.

2. Which senior do you want to be like? Morning Musume 19's Oda Sakura-san and Angerme's Nakanishi Kana-san. Since I have a voice fetish, Oda-san's voice is almighty. Her voice is clear, and she can also use cute and cool voices. It's like her voice changes magically, and it's really amazing. Also, I really love how Oda-san thinks of those around her. The way she thinks about idols and herself is really cool, and I admire her as an idol, and as a woman. Nakanishi-san is a very stoic, hard worker. Nakanishi-san and myself were never in the Hello Pro Kenshuusei, and we joined Hello! Project. I've known about Nakanishi-san since she joined and took the audition, and even though there were Kenshuusei in her generation, she never stopped smiling even when she was working on difficult things. She's cute, cool, and has a wide range of style which is good, and I think it's wonderful that she has various charms.

3. If you were reborn, who would you want to be? Angerme's Kamikokuryo Moe-san. I like everything, including her visuals, her very clear singing voice, and her atmosphere. Her face is also the type I like! Also, at the Hello! Project concert's shuffle corner, I had the chance to sing an Angerme song, and I was in charge of Kamikokuryo-san's part. I couldn't do it well, so Kamikokuryo-san told me, "try watching this video," and "do it like this." Even during the rehearsal, she said to me, "a little bit ago, you did the line well!" and I was happy that she was able to do that in a casual manner. I think it would be good if I became that kind of senior, as well.

4. What do you think you are number one at in Hello Pro? What I think I'm definitely the best at is my love for the things I like. Animals, Kaouken no Onna, PreCure, there's a lot. Also, accessory making, I won't lose to anyone in my hand dexterity! But, I want to become number one at dancing. Definitely dancing.

5. Tell us something great about Hello Pro. It's broad. I think that a genre called Hello! Project has been established, it's not just cute songs and cool songs, there are various songs on different vectors like play-like songs, and exciting songs. For each and every song, the singing, dancing and expressions, there is no end, and no compromise to them, and that's what makes it cool. Hello! Project concerts are really cool, and I think that's a charm.

6. If you could form a special unit in Hello Pro, who would it be with? Though I want to do so many, I want to dance with the members who are good at dancing! Also, I want to do a cute song with Yokoyama Reina-san (Morning Musume '19), Kawamura Ayano-san (Angerme), Ozeki Mai-san (Country Girls), Shimakura Rika-chan and Okamura Minami-chan (BEYOOOOONDS)!

7. Tell us your favourite BEYOOOOONDS song! "Megane no Otoko no Ko" is fun! It's become like a play, and the lyrics also represent a story, which has an introduction, development, plot twist and ending. So, I think that I want you to enjoy the song from the beginning to the end, with the changes in expressions. It's easy to put emotions into it, and it's really fun.

8. What is your favourite song in all of Hello Pro? Hmmm - there's so many! Since there really is a lot, what I'm currently addicted to are Tsubaki Factory's "Fuwari, Koi Tokei" and Juice=Juice's "Borderline." I saw them at the Hello Con rehearsals, and I became addicted.

9. What’s the difference between Hello Pro then and now? This is from the eyes of a fan but, I feel that the features of each group are more clearly visible. If it's a cute song, it's Country Girls, if it's a pure song, it's Tsubaki Factory, I think there's a feeling that you can say that.

10. Other than yourself, who is the member that people should watch to come to like Hello Pro? Everyone in the whole thing (laughs). Since all the personalities are different, there will definitely be a girl in Hello! that you like. You'll definitely find your favourite! Though BEYOOOOONDS has an explosion of individuality, it's Maeda Kokoro-chan! Since I have a voice fetish, I think that my voice preference has appeared (laughs). Maeda Kokoro-chan has a boyish character now, but in fact, she's really got a lot of girly parts. She's really kind and attentive, and I think that I might be mad about her.

11. What do you most want people to look at on you? After all, it's my dancing. Since I like to create my own choreography and be creative, I think that I'd like to do something like that in the future. Also, my voice. Though I have a complex about it, when I entered this work, the amount of times that I've been told, "your voice has character," and "you have a nice voice" has really increased. I've really come to like to sing. I was building a wall toward myself about singing not being suited for me, but I don't have that now, and I think that I want to use my voice for work. I would be happy if you just listened to a song and was like, oh, isn't that Satoyoshi?

12. What kind of work would you like to take on in the future? Working with my voice, and choreography. Also, I like makeup, so I'd like to try something related to beauty! I want to make someone pretty, and try producing the members. Like, this colour suits this member, and I want you to have this atmosphere, like that.

13. What do you want people to see the most in BEYOOOOONDS? There are a lot of members who are skilled at acting and expressions, so I want that to be looked at. If we do a cute song, there might be a girl who is said to be superior, and if we do a cool song, you could say we have someone who is the strongest. We can do everything! I want you to look at us and say that. Including something like a retro feeling, I want you to see that.

14. What do you think you’ll be doing 20 years from now? I think that I want to continue dancing and doing plays. Since I was small, I've always been taking on various challenges, and I've never stopped loving these two things. So, these are things that I will surely continue, and I think, I don't think I'll ever stop. Also,I want to be a beautiful girl and a wonderful woman. Now, I have the feeling the age that I am, 18 years old, and I think that I want to grow as a woman.

15. It’s the 20th anniversary, so please tell us a special secret! I say quite a lot about secrets (laughs). When I wake up every morning, and when I go home, before I go to bed, I spin my dog, Omochi-kun around, and smell him (laughs). He is a maltese, and I love him and dote on him. But, he hates that. I think that I can't show that kind of gross level of me (laughs).

16. When the 20th anniversary is over next year, what’s something that you’d like to do? I want to grow in singing. That's my biggest task right now. I don't have experience, so I don't know how to use my voice, and it feels like I'm being taught while fumbling around. I think that I have to work hard so I can become good at singing.

17. What if you weren’t an idol? Originally, I wasn't intending to go to university. The audition started in May, and at that time, I had decided that I was going to work for Hello! Though, I wonder what I would have done,  I think that I would have done my best do be able to be active on stage as much as I could with dancing or plays.

18. What are you into the most right now? There's a lot, but it's pickles. I'm also addicted to seaweed rolls. Sometimes, I make it at home, and if I can't make it, I'll buy it. Recently, my friend gave me Kyoto pickles, and that made me really happy. For seaweed rolls, I like ume nattou and tototaku, and I like the soft seaweed.

19. Who are you close with in Hello Pro? Though I'm good friends with everyone in BEYOOOOONDS, other than the members, Ise Layla-chan, who joined Angerme with the same timing as I joined BEYOOOOONDS. Even though we're three years apart, our sense of distance is the same, and it's really fun to talk with her. We also love the same character, "Mossari Masao," and when I went to the first collaboration cafe a while ago, by chance, we saw each other in line! I was with my sister, and when I looked behind me, I saw her. I didn't want to leave that feeling of chance behind, so we both blogged about it.

20. What is an idol to you? When things are hard, there are girls in my generation who are doing their best and singing, it's really impactful, and within me, idols are definitely an existence who deliver energy and smiles to people. I think it's really cool. Of course, other artists are definitely like that, and sometimes, I get energy from listening to other artists' music. But, idols are a more familiar presence. You can make your penlight the colour of your favourite member, call their names, and your cheers will reach the idol. When I realize that I'm getting support, I think that I'm really happy, and when I get comments on my blog, or at concerts, when I hear voices calling out like, "Utanoooo," or "Utanooooon," it really gives me energy. I think that what's good about idols is communication, but I haven't done a handshake event yet, and I want to convey my feelings of gratitude directly to those who are supporting me so much. I think that the good point of an idol is how you can communicate with them. I'm sorry I couldn't do this in just one word!

maybe miles but like more as a joke because like emily adores photography, she used to do a lot of it when she was a teenager for school because her dad was really interested in vintage cameras (see also: her box brownie collection she considered selling) and so thats a nice part of im to hold onto for her. he gave her a polaroid camera which she broke in one of her first big mental break downs. then some years later, a boyfriend at the time bought her a new one which she used a lot for a while. then they broke up and she hasn’t really touched photography since. anyway basically i think miles would probably know most of this (all her polaroids are probably still packed up in a box) so he’d pick up her camra sometimes like “photograph me like one of ur french women~” and shed be like omg stop ur being a silly goose ily.

I really like the Veluwe!! It’s a beautiful place of nature and there are lots of deer!!!!!!!! We go on vacation with our family there once in a while and I’ve always loved it :) and I also really like our small islands in the north! We go to one of them almost every year and they’re very beautiful and peaceful, lots of nature and no flats, so yeah those places I really love!

2. Do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad?

Actually, I do like going on vacation here! It’s close to home, everyone speaks our language, and as I said in the previous question we often go on vacation with our family in the Netherlands, so that’s also why I like it :D I think going abroad also stresses me out a little more for some reason, but I do like other countries as well

4. Favourite dish specific for your country?

FRIKANDEL!!! This is a meat-y piece of meat that I’ve only encountered in other countries at places where lots of Dutch people visit! They’re super delicious and I’ll probably always love them haha xD

Ooooooooooooo heck let me think… I really have no idea tbh, I don’t really listen to many Dutch songs, but one that I enjoy singing with my music partner is called “Het Regent Zonnestralen” (”It Rains Sunshine”) by Acda & De Munnik :D

Actually I do! By far not everything, many movies are cliche and always feature the same actors, but we’ve had some awesome shows and series here! “Flikken Maastricht” (”Police Maastricht”) is my fave series and “Zondag met Lubach” (”Sunday with Lubach”) and “Wie is de Mol” (”Who is the Mole”) are two of my fave shows!

traditions, colour schemes and – rarity tactics?

I had a few questions about Lunar New Year and how the related merchandise is received by celebrants (quite well, I expect, given that there are more and more on offer each year). Is red-and-gold the preferred colour palette, or are other options just as popular? Are items that feature the year’s zodiac sign more covetable in general, or only for people born in the year of that sign? And do people who celebrate the lunar new year appreciate the marketing? 

For input, I turned to my friend Wendy Lee, lead wedding designer/planner of Asian Fusion Weddings and my go-to expert on the subject.

While Lunar New Year isn’t quite the gift-giving insanity Christmas is, in addition to new clothes, shoes and accessories to herald a start to a prosperous year, people do buy gifts for loved ones. “We could just give lucky money, but that seems so impersonal,” says Wendy. “Lucky money is usually given to younger folks by older, married people. I see makeup as friend-to-friend gifts, or something special for a sister. A nice lipstick like the Givenchy, I might give to my mom because of the special packaging.”

Red, or red-and-gold isn’t necessary, but “Chinese New Year is traditionally associated with red and gold, the way Easter is associated with pastels,” Wendy points out. “Shoppers are more likely to pause and appreciate a red-and-gold palette during the celebrations, and it makes gift-giving easier. Items packaged in black and white aren’t as desirable because they won’t convey the happy feelings you’re supposed to enjoy at this time of year.”

Something adorned with the zodiac sign “is a rarity tactic,” she says. “Each sign only comes around every 12 years, which appeals to collectors. The zodiac symbols are special for people born under that sign, but if you’re a collector, having it on something is a must.”

The season has become “a money-making thing for retailers,” she acknowledges. “I was at Marshall’s and saw a fortune god statue for sale, and pillows with Chinese-lantern prints. I never saw that when I was growing up.” (Wendy grew up in Toronto.)

“Other cultures celebrate the lunar new year, too,” she notes. “But the market all seems aimed toward the Chinese. Maybe it’s because the wealth and population size here make it worthwhile? That said, I love browsing through all the wonderful gifts available. But given that we live in a multicultural society, I’d like to see other cultures celebrated the same way.”

rainbow fluorite: how different was your life one year ago? did it change for the better or worse? - BAHAHA OKAY WELL STORY TIME. So actually, around about this time last year I began the whole curfuffle to do with my illness. And basically by illness I mean cancer. About this time last year I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer that is most commonly found in teenagers and young adults. It is also one of the easiest forms of cancer to treat. So this time last year I had been told that I had cancer and I was terrified. It meant going frequently to hospitals and having multiple blood tests and various other needle-related things. Now, before being ill I had only been to hospitals for injuries that I had done (twice) and even then they were relatively minor, so this meant that I HATED hospitals and I was really reluctant to go to them. I also had a huge fear of needles so being stabbed multiple times in a week was not something I was looking forward to. Luckily before I started treatment they put in a PICC line, which is basically a long cannula that stays there for months, and it allowed me to have painless blood tests and get the chemo quickly going round my body. I was also not looking forward to loosing all of my hair as I used to have very long golden blonde hair that I was very proud of, I also had had long hair basically my whole life, so I didn’t want to let it go. Plus, I was told that it might grow back a different colour (and it did tbh, it came back like a duller version of my previous colour, that’s why I’ve dyed my hair). It also meant feeling like absolute dogshite for about 6/7 months as well as missing so much school that I have to now watch my friends go to uni while I’m still stuck doing my A levels.  - So yeah life for me one year ago was VERY different and I’m glad to say that my treatment finished in March and I now feel very healthy and back to normal. It did change me as a person for the better I think as I am no longer afraid of going into hospitals, it almost feels normal, also even though I still don’t like needles, if someone told me I had to have a blood test then I would just be like “UGH fine” and whip out my arm, look away from the needle and ramble at the nurse about something I like to distract me. Also it kinda has given me more confidence because FUCK YEAH I BEAT CANCER I’M FUCKING AWESOME

1.) Why did you choose your URL?

You must all know this by now, lol. Okay so 1-I’m French Canadian, a popular insult for us by the English is “Frog” and I highly believe in claiming back insults.2-The first online url I had (well second. I had wolves has my special interest back when I was 12 so ‘wolfy136′ was the first, fleeting url I got) was after I joinned the HP fandom, with my favourite character, thus Lunard136/Lunard1 was born (that’s moony. my wolf special interest faded in the background but it’s still there to show lol). I started going to other websites than HP ones and I was starting to feel like that url wasn’t good for those so I thought long and hard about something I could be me and not fandom related so I wouldn’t have to change it again (because change is good but I hate it) and I came up with “Froggy”. Only to find it was used already. I was tired of the old 136 so I decided to had something about me in the url, something about my temper (I’m definitely a fire sign) and added the “bangbang” because I catch like a barrel of powder. (you dirty mind you if you thought I’d use it as a sex reference! Shame on you! except lol yeah I knew how it sounded and I was fine with letting people who don’t know me think I’m a nympho. what better way to hide I’m not really all that interested in sex, which is weird and not normal, right? right.)

This hellsite is my main place for interacting with sensible human beings. I also LOVE *those* posts. you the ones where one person asks a questions/ places a random thought and then.... it just. takes a life of its own? and everyone knows them? The Guam Cookie post is one. The many Aliens finds Humans Weird also. but then there’s the smaller ones like just. They are exactly the kind of stuff I’d be saying with my (ex? maybe?)friend in Rimousky like you say something, and they add something in a deadpanned way that is bviously exagerated/insane and then you add on it and they add on it until you are at the stage that you won’t be buy mayo because, really, having to marry someone from an island so you could get away with murder is much too much effort. The first season is the best without a doubt. I’ve loved the second season but in the first one the story were even more concentrated on one story per episode and it was very well thought off and they didn’t overdo it yet, which they tented to do afterwards, as well as letting more episode be one story and not following canon anymore. I’m actually sadden at my lack of consistency at following Elementary.

Tried to watch that season but didn’t care to not miss an episode... then I just... forgot to tune in. so that’d be since.... according to WIKI the first episodes in French were in 1994 and “squeeze” is the third one.

This is MF DOOM on the Jake One track 'Get 'Er Done':

Make no mistake son, it's Jake One, he makes beats well like I likes my steaks done with sauteed onions and hella worcestershire, a gush of beer to wash it down.

First of all, whew that internal rhyme! Worcestershire//gush of beer. Yes! I feel like only MF DOOM can do this shit. I read a really interesting write up on MF DOOM from Ta-Nehisi Coates recently. Coates seems like the nicest guy ever - he's so smart but also completely unpretentious. He writes for Marvel and The New Yorker and seems to easily move between those worlds. (I was in a comic book shop today and feeling kind of out of place but the bald, bearded goth guy behind the counter was super nice, and declared the book I put on the counter an “awesome read” and then he recommended some other stuff to me as well. This is a wildly irrelevant anecdote - was just thinking about comics.) Anyway, Coates talks about DOOM, but also his own experience as a hip hop fan:

I kept the assembled works of Wu-Tang Clan on repeat and stewed, convinced that somewhere around 1998 hip-hop had run out of things to say. I was not alone. Disaffected music fans began to refer to the halcyon days of the eighties and nineties—when every rapper had a d.j., and label owners didn’t vamp in videos, confusing themselves with artists—as “the Golden Era.”

We were the kind of fundamentalists that haunt every genre of popular music. By the end of the nineties, we had started seeking a sound that offered something other than guns, girls, and drugs. Some of us found neo-soul. Others got lost in our parents’ jazz records. And still others were radicalized and turned to U2 and Björk.

Not to be picky, but I feel like Wu-Tang talks about guns, girls and drugs plenty. But they also talk about the Shaolin, martial arts and poverty and I guess that's the difference. Anyway, I never knew why DOOM wore the mask, but he says:

I wanted to get onstage and orate, without people thinking about the normal things people think about. Like girls being like, ‘Oh, he’s sexy,’ or ‘I don’t want him, he’s ugly,’ and then other dudes sizing you up. A visual always brings a first impression. But if there’s going to be a first impression I might as well use it to control the story. So why not do something like throw a mask on?

Huh. This other musician I like, Brock Berrigan (he makes really nice beats -you should check him out), always wears a chicken head mask - possibly for reasons similar to DOOM's. For me, that reasoning doesn't check out though, because aren't people obsessed with unmasking? I guess if nothing else it creates an iconic image around your act without that having to literally be your face the way it is with most other artists. ANYWAY, I guess lyrics don't need to be technically amazing like DOOM's to be entertaining - this dude Open Mike Eagle has some good lines. From his track "Ziggy Starfish (Anxiety Raps)":

I log into my Twitter page And start bending over like Gollum This dumb cred is like crack rock And I never seem to hit bottom

Sweet Gollum reference - I had to look this one up. The "bending over" kind of threw me: I thought he was maybe saying something about hoes on social media but then why would he be bending over? Then I thought maybe he was saying he was gay and hoeing on social media himself but it still seems weird to invoke Gollum in that context, right? I like Gollum as much as the next person (i.e. a lot), but I would not be super keen to draw comparisons between his appearance and my own (although we do share the same sickly pallor and blue eyes - plus, I too have spent many years living in a cave). According to Rap Genius (and the line's context - I am truly an idiot for not getting it sooner. Maybe I just wanted it to be something sexual to do with Gollum) he's just saying that he's addicted to Twitter and the praise/attention it affords him, similar to how Gollum is addicted to the ring (and crouching).

From age 18 - 21 I was super into Fleet Foxes (I think they hold up. They're pretty irresistible, right?). They have this song "Montezuma" which finishes like this:

Oh man what I used to be Montezuma to Tripoli Oh man oh my oh me

I guess I'm an idiot because when he sings "Montezuma to Tripoli" I always heard "Montezuma 2 Triple E" and imagined it stylised like this: Montezuma 2EEE. Tripoli obviously makes more sense but it never even occurred to me that he was saying that. I thought he was referring to something mysterious and abstract. (Writing it out like EEE makes it look like a bra cup size. I don't know if they do triple cup sizes (they do!). Even doubles make no sense to me. Okay, so I've quickly Googled it. If you're curious: it turns out that a double or triple letter cup size indicates that the boob being cupped sits somewhere between two cup sizes - so a DDD breast is bigger than a DD breast which is bigger than a D breast, and all of them are smaller than E. That's what this website says anyway. But this whole framework really falls down with the AA cup, because a AA is smaller than an A. It should at least be consistent. I've been wearing bras for years (big shot coming through) and am only now learning about all of this. To be honest, I am incredibly guesstimate-y with my bra shopping: band size is pretty consistent but cup size swings wildly across the alphabet. Should probably get fitted but I feel awkward being fondled by a shop assistant. Montezuma 2EEE: I imagined some weird website which was techy and totally opaque to me, but also somehow involved Aztec emperors. I kind of want to make a weird, pointless website ("isn't that what this blog is, Kath?") because I have pinelife.net and nothing is happening there - I post all my Pinelife blog posts there too (which I know is a real waste of effort - my time is worth nothing so I don't mind wasting that) but I kind of prefer Wordpress' text editor to Tumblr's so it has that advantage. I found this really weird website (please please check it out) a while ago via the House of Leaves subreddit and found it so intriguing and exciting. I don't know why, but I had this insane rush of adrenaline while I was exploring the website. It was cool. Maybe I should make a weird, labyrinthine, pointless website of my own: it'll have shitty navigation, the font and background will be the same colour, possibly other things will be wrong with it too. It'd be something to do anyway. Maybe instead of making a book object I could make a website object - is that a thing? This might be a good way to waste some (more) of my time anyway. I do kind of want to make something. I’ve been bored with blogging for a while. Or, I don’t know - I enjoy doing it and looking back on my old posts (out of the vault: remember this one about cynicism and church? I was so proud of that. Weirdly, my favourite post from last year is this stupid one about pizza which was really low effort) but I don’t know if there’s anything I’ve written in the last year that I’m that proud of. The year went really fast and I feel like I’ve change a bit (or maybe a lot, I’m not sure). 

Montezuma2eee.com is available. Hmmm. I already have pinelife.net. Is it greedy to want another domain? I doubt Montezuma2eee is going anywhere (but I’d feel like quite the fool if someone did take it from me - I can’t really be the first to think it’s 2EEE - it literally sounds exactly like it). Anyway, I should play around on pinelife.net for a bit before making the $0.99 commitment to a new domain. 

Urgh. I’m an idiot. I nuked pinelife.net and all of the images I’ve uploaded to Wordpress there are gone and I’m lazy and never bothered to upload them to stupid tumblr, I just copied them and now they’re gone. I hate myself. Why didn’t I think for like half a second before deleting everything? Plus, there must be a better way to delete Wordpress beyond FTPing in and trawling through all my folders and deleting anything with a wp prefix. What happens if I just delete everything, like all the folders, and just start from scratch? I’ve forgotten how all this works. (This blog post is a real, rambling steam of consciousness. If I had any editorial credibility I would not publish this thing.)

Hey, talking about me trying to be creative: I was just hunting around my writing folder (basically untouched since 2015) and found this monstrosity I made to mourn the demise of Google Reader (wtf is/was wrong with me?). Jesus I have no memory of making this. Troublingly, I feel very pleased with this thing and its weirdness (obviously if I was genuinely embarrassed I wouldn’t share it here). This would have been 2013.

Also, I won’t post this, but I found an old poem I wrote (lame) in 2012 for uni which is all bullet points and features the word “pre-cum” in the first line. 22 year old me: why?

More? This is the start to a novel I was writing when I was 22/23:

Sirens by the swamp. The river doesn’t move in the summer heat: green carpet of scum across the surface. Two police cruisers are parked on the grass, another blocks the footpath. An officer unfurls yellow tape.

In a local 7/11 the Slurpee machine releases its hold on life and a stickiness of Cola flavoured low calorie slush spills forth. Potato salad is left to putrefy at a hundred backyard barbeques. In a thousand shitty sedans the steering wheel is too hot to hold. In a million armpits sweat prickles through dark hair to find cool air.

The body is partially submerged in the swamp. Obscured by slime and dark water, her hair is tangled in water grass, an eel nuzzles her cheek. From the waist down she is naked, seething with ants and flies. There is a tattoo of a dragon on her hip. If there was a lot of blood it’s now vanished into the mud. Someone has performed a riverside hysterectomy: it was not tidily done.

Sirens by the swamp. Five girls stand in the shade under the bridge: jutting hips, bare feet, iPhones, string bikinis, denim shorts. One pops gum as a police officer asks her preliminary questions. Another discretely photographs the crime scene with her phone. Their families are not expecting them for lunch. It’s Werribee and it’s Christmas day.

the thing th@ made me haha was th@ channel 10 made such a big deal about her being found by tha sirens b/c theyre young girls and tha news ppl tried to make out like its not a safe town 4 girls nd like girls shouldnt go out alone nd they tried to use tha sirens as an eg of young women in peril. but it was like oh man have u got it wrong. those river girls are bad
