#i literally just have to filter out the batfam characters at this point
There are only so many fanfics that use the entirety of DC as cardboard cutouts to prop up bat family characters that I can read before I go berserk.
I swear to god. Every character that has ever been shipped with a bat or coexists on the same team as a bat is owed an apology.
How many Young Justice fanfics that solely revolve around Tim must exist? How many Titans fanfics centered only on Dick? Why is it a herculean task to find a Justice League fanfic without Bruce as the main character?
And then even when you do find a fic that seems like it's balanced, everything still revolves around the bat. Like Kon, Cassie and Bart have nothing else going on in their lives except Tim and Tim's issues or thinking about Tim. Like Donna and Wally and Roy just cannot function if they aren't spending every waking moment thinking about Dick.
I'm... Guys. I'm at my limit. I swear to god. We need to make a Batman tag and surgically remove all these fics and quarantine them there. We'll keep the actual DC fics and they can do whatever the fuck they want in their own tag. It's getting ridiculous how hard it is to find fanfic that's actually DC related and isn't just 'The BatFam Show'.

yo i'm seeing a lot of dishing about the purity culture of fandom and i absolutely agree
but i'd like to ask
do 'incest fic' count, i mean specifically i'm in the batfam fandom and if you try and write pairing with batman's adopted kids /former robins together everyone and their mother starts screaming at you both online and on ao3, and if you point out the lack of blood relation all you get it 'it's still incest oh my god you're a horrible person who doesn't believe in adopted sibling relationships' and like... i just wanna smush the two pretty vigilante characters together, it's very exhausting, and it also applies to discord, the fandom is very hardcore about policing this and like I get it to an extent because I've seen a lot of posts about how 'seeing batcest on my dash turns my stomach' 'having to scroll past bastcest on ao3 to get anything good is disturbing and disgusting' and tagging, is not enough for these people, i've seen some poor fools pointing out instances of real life adopted siblings who've ended up together due to the adoption being their parents decision ect and the vitriol that's met with is very aggressive, they basically just don't want it to exist and don't want people who ship it to feel safe talking about it out in the open on tumblr because it's weird and something to feel ashamed of that you shouldn't force 'normal people' to see.
And it's like, why do I have to be treated like a fucking leper in online spaces over a ship? It's literally scarlet letter shit where if someone posts something with nightwing x red hood art even if it's cute and utterly harmless like one of them blushing over a hot chocolate people will literally go into their mutuals askbox and 'warn' them that that person you reblogged from likes batcest. Legitimately. It's so toxic.
See, if you're tagging your ship correctly, if you're rating it correctly, if you're posting it in the appropriate places, if you are making it clear what it is that you've created so that others who don't want to interact with it can keep scrolling without clicking or can use their blacklist functions, then you're not doing anything wrong and your responsibility is pretty much over.
And that goes for any ship, any trope, and any fic in any fandom.
It does not matter.
No singular person or group of people has the right to police an entire fandom just because there's content being created that they don't personally like or agree with.
As long as those creators are keeping their content to the appropriate places (i.e. not posting explicit material in a general audience server or purposefully putting ship content under the wrong tag to force others to see it) then it's everyone else's responsibility to curate their own fandom experiences by using blacklists, mute functions, exclude filters, the block button, or just not clicking on content they know they don't like or agree with.
There are ships and tropes that turn my stomach. I don't want to see them, consume them, or even think about them because they squick me out.
And that's on me.
So I block, I blacklist, I mute, and I don't click.
Because the burden of responsibility for what I consume in fandom is on me.
Fandoms are like villages. Yeah, we're all living in close proximity but that doesn't give anyone else the right to come into my house uninvited and tell me they don't like my decor or that I can't cook this particular meal in my kitchen because they are allergic to it even though I never invited them to dinner.
So ignore the people who try and do that.
Tend your roses, fill your shelves, make your meals, and enjoy yourself instead.

I started seeing Maribat crossover here and there and i was like "oh?? interesting" cause i love crossovers and they usually were like "oh i was inspired by [user]" who might have had the idea originally which is normal in things like that. And then large influx of fics started popping up with basically the same summary and "miracuclass salt" tags and i was like what the hell is happening?? I tried reading some of them cause I wanted to see what was happening but eventually i specifically had to filter out Miraculous cause it was just a lot of bashing. It shows up in the top ten listed under fandom filters for a lot of Batman related tags. Even then it's not perfect cause there's no unified way of tagging it, it might just be tagged as Maribat, Bruce Wayne is Marinette's Biological parent + its variations, or not at all (the tags list on the userscript i use to autohide fics with certain tags is only as long as it is because I've had to add so many variations of the same tags or various marinett/[insert batfam member here]) doesn't get filtered out. On top of that but since they're written from people who aren't part of the DC fandom (not saying it's inherently a bad thing) but especially if the fics are by people who just wanna write salt with Marinette being the most badass bitch in the universe, a fair amount of them have the DC heroes being impressed with just like, the bare minimum? The worst offenders are like, she'd a civilian and she punches a mugger or acts sassy towards Batman or some super scary Gotham Rogue (have these writers met the batkids? apparently not) and they're throwing themselves at her feet.
Sorry this turned into a rant but yeah the idea of ML/DC crossovers is genuinely interesting but it's just so saturated with salt that i lost interest and it's just unfortunate.
lol YEAH
Those fics are a combination of character bashing on every ML character other than Mari, combined with a very Mary Sue fantasy. All the rest of the class(except for a chosen few on occasion) are awful horrific people. Marinette is sad. But she's so perfect in every way and can totally take down a literal trained assassin barehanded with her year and a half of superheroing while magic boosted.
Double points on the salt for the narrative of "It's okay Damian I forgive the fact that you've killed people before. You were basically brainwashed into it and you feel bad about it now! Oh but my former friends who were gaslit into thinking I was a bully and decided to 'get revenge' through petty namecalling and pranks and have now realized what they done and feel awful? Fuck them they're horrible people who don't deserve shit. Oh Dami honey won't you use your father's money and influence to get them blacklisted from every career path they've ever wanted?"

1, 8, 10, 11, 22, delear's choice on fandom 👀
choosing violence :)
i'm gonna go dc themed for this one (when it applies) thanks for the ask archie!!
also, as a disclaimer, it's stuff i personally dislike for whatever reason. i've filtered tags and blocked the majority of people who say/talk about these things, but occasionally posts do escape through my filters bc a lot of the shit i'm annoyed by with DC are SUPER common among the fandom (which is partially why im annoyed)
the character everyone gets wrong
BATMAN. god. not even the actual writers can write a batman i can tolerate. there are like. maybe five(?) fanfic authors whose batman takes i actually enjoy? the others are so hit or miss. i barely even browse the tags anymore it's too much emotional effort to filter through the fics that are left even if i use stringent filters
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
that clark/bruce can't have a dad bod or be pudgy or be fat. like there are SO many artists who draw them in these ways, and also? Strength isn't defined by how dehydrated you are when you flex? you need fat to pad out the muscles, or else you're going to REALLY hurt after working out so much. yes, even clark. besides, the soft look is sweet. i like it a lot. i know i draw them a bit more on the 'hunk' side, but i will defend the dad bod/chubby/fat bruce and clark truthers to my death
10. worst part of fanon
the sheer number of people who try to heteronormify a literal gay pairing
no actually it's two things: clark being nothing more than an idiot (he's allowed his himbo moments but he's also very competent!!) and bruce being... abusive? verbally or physically?? there's like two sides of fanon bruce that i strongly hate: the bordering on abusive bruces and the bruces who are aggressively baby-ified. both are. not fun. a certain amount of pathetic is fine in a man, whatever, i love rene and he's a super pathetic man, but there's like there's a point when it stops being 'ah yeah just a sad little man' and starts being 'the author is REALLY piling shit onto him and putting ALL the responsibility on the other character to fix him'.
11. number of fandom-related words you've filtered
ok depends on fandom but for DC? like. four? i think. no wait five, although the fifth is like sometimes hit or miss bc there ARE a lot of major character deaths (and undeaths) in canon and like i don't really care as long as it's not permanent?
but i filter a/b/o (and related tags), mpreg, incest, and rape. all are self explanatory, but just filtering the first two ALONE absolutely guts the fic count and i stare at the fic counter the way you might watch a horror protagonist just barely get away from the killer without realizing it. am i saying the fandom has rank-ass taste? yes. actually. who knew so many people had a kink for bioessentialism?
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
in THIS big of a fandom i feel like there isn't a lot that people ignore? like there's something for everybody, and i mean everybody. although i do feel like a disproportionate number of people prefer batman and the batfam over superman and the superfam and im really sad about that bc people automatically write them off as 'good is boring', and the canon writers often do the same. which like. guys. cmon. it's not 'boring' to put your entire (superpowered) might into uprooting the deeply entrenched weeds of oppressive systems in the world and looking forward to a brighter future. that's why we fight?? isn't it? so we can have a better tomorrow??? superman isn't boring at all, happiness and hope isn't boring. hope and happiness find meaning in knowing that they are not the default, that we have to work hard and struggle for it!! anyways. i do follow some people who talk about this so it's not entirely ignored, but like in the wider ship spaces i do NOT see enough people talking about this specific element of superman. i think they all just think he's hot. which i agree with. but i ALSO think he's cool and interesting and more than just his appearance.

Cass stans hating Jason stans because of fanfic is ridiculous. As is Cass stans aren't equally bad of writing classists, ableist, mockeries of Jason in turn. Honestly each group is playing themselves the issue is never the characters its unimaginative writers and people being unwilling to allow characters to have arcs or change.
Look, I don't think you understand how much popular of a character Jason is at this point in time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now if you cross search for how many fics these two are in together, you get
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going based off the sheer numbers, I don't think these Cass fans are writing mockeries in return. And even if they were, Jason fans can go read the 36,440 stories about Jason that don't include Cass. Cass fans have 2,370 stories that exclude Jason - which is still big but also less than half of her stories.
Now another metric - if you filter by how many stories are solo stories (excluding all other batfam members you get the following results):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are only 338 stories where Cass isn't attached to the batfamily. Of course her fans are going to be resentful. Especially if they see fics where Cass and Jason getting along as ooc for Cass. Why would they be busy writing mockeries of Jason when we already have so little Cass content 💀 that would be a waste of time and I've literally never seen it while reading fic. I have seen Cass show up in stories to go - "guys look how sad jason is" and then do nothing else the entire time multiple times - it's not just jason either and they literally did this in canon with Tim. I don't go out of my way looking for it.
Because there's not a ton of Cass fic (of the actually cool badass Batgirl 2000 Cass), yeah people are going to be resentful if they keep clicking into fics where their fave shows up as a human mood ring, despite that never being their canon characterization. And yeah, I'm sure good writers don't do that, but like 90% of the batfam fandom hasn't read her comic, so like what are they drawing off of to write her?
In happy land where Jason gave up killing and didn't commit any serial murders after coming back, sure they can get along. There's my imagination. Cass stans are just resentful that Cass's character is changed for her and Jason to get along in most of the fan works about the two - and that's completely reasonable imo (like wouldn't you be mad/resentful if Jason was a fluffy stuffed bunny hug monster in all fics about Cass), and is funny because it reminds me of a popular anti-Bruce rant where Jason stans were hating on Bruce because Jason always has to change for him. So like. Shouldn't be hard to see why Cass stans are upset.
Which is why I look at the discourse and I just laugh because hardcore Cass stans are probably never going to like Jason stans, or want to hear them out, so long as the version of Cass that's currently prevalent is the one showing up in fics/canon

I kinda feel like there’s just a fundamental difference between the way I view Dick leaving after R:YO and after Bruce fired him the second time, and like....how a lot of other Batfam fans view that.
I think on some level there’s a tendency of some fans to view these actions of Dick’s as a kind of passive aggression, like he was doing it to hurt Bruce, and that’s why in a lot of minds, its not as big a deal that Bruce wasn’t the one to reach out to Dick after Dick left home for good, that he was justified in being hurt and feeling like the hurt party, because Dick did it in part to hurt him.
But aside from my need to constantly bleat ‘BRUCE IS THE PARENT THO’ lololol, the other facet of this disconnect, I think, is I don’t actually feel any of the above has anything to do with Dick’s reasoning in these circumstances.
If you look at his overall characterizations and patterns of behavior growing up, the thing is....there’s this constant affirmation that Dick never at any point expressed that he needed to stay with Bruce - just purely as in the sense of like, he was just a little kid, of course he needed a guardian, an adult to look out for him. Because we’re talking about a kid who was deadset on vigilantism from day one in Gotham. Whatever your personal headcanon or take on how old exactly he was at that point, it still remains true that this is not, and never was, a kid who felt a NEED for adult supervision.
No. Dick always, always, always expressed a complete willingness to be on his own, to exist independent of adults, to do what was most important to him, no matter what surroundings that left him in. He expressed an extreme tendency towards self-reliance from pretty much the moment his parents died, because with very little exception, from the moment his parents died, everyone else around him constantly reinforced the idea that he couldn’t rely on anyone but himself.
Bruce was the exception.
Dick didn’t stay with Bruce ever, didn’t stay at the Manor instead of running away to be on his own, where nobody could tell him what to do and what not to do or subject him to circumstances where he was helpless and under others’ control.....like, Dick didn’t stay with Bruce because he felt he HAD to.
He stayed because Bruce gave him a REASON to. Because Bruce gave him the one thing he couldn’t get on his own, the one thing he WANTED enough to stay despite it meaning he inevitably had to surrender a large amount of control over his own life and subject himself to having his autonomy overridden by a parental authority. Bruce gave him the love, and care, and sense of family he’d lost when his parents died, but that he still very much craved.
But take that away, or at least take away his perception of it, make him doubt it exists.....why, in Dick’s eyes, would he then have any more reason to stay there than he did anywhere else? Why wouldn’t he be better off on his own, if he was no longer getting the one thing he couldn’t get on his own, but was still expected to give up having sole control over his own life, the only other thing he’s ever expressed as much of a need or desire for?
So, I guess I just fundamentally don’t see Dick’s leaving after being fired as in any way an attempt to hurt Bruce or get back at him, because I honestly don’t think that’s how Dick’s mind works. He’s a very emotionally driven character, but that emotion almost always filters through pretty consistent logic and patterns.
I think in Dick’s mind it was simple: if he no longer felt he was wanted at Wayne Manor, there was no reason for him to be at Wayne Manor. End of story.
And that’s why I have as big an issue with Bruce’s lack of action, and failure to reach out to Dick after he left home (well before he was eighteen, in most continuities), as I do with various other conflicts between them:
Because when you take in a kid with massive abandonment issues, control issues, and who has spent his entire life being judged and looked down upon by the same people you’re surrounded by every day, and that he in turn is constantly surrounded by from the second you take him in, with it constantly being reinforced in a variety of ways throughout his childhood that most people think he doesn’t ‘belong’ there, that he doesn’t have any actual reason to be there as he’s not really your son or family, that his presence there is entirely due to your charity and nothing else.....
Then it absolutely, one hundred percent is on you to make sure you are always pushing back against that in some way, and providing him with literally ANY reason or evidence that you DO want him there, that he IS your family, that his place there is NOT dependent on charity or whimsy but is in fact one hundred percent secure.
And no, sitting on your ass while your son-that-you’re-afraid-to-actually-call-your-son-not-that-he-has-any-way-to-possibly-know-that-or-reason-to-assume-that-right-now, like....deliberately takes his time packing up his things and moving out, almost as if, y’know, waiting and hoping for you to give him a reason to stay, to think you WANT him to stay....
Like....that doesn’t....actually....count.

ill be honest im def here for ur linked universe writing but i love ur writing so much i read ur dc stuff too even tho i only know whats happening like half the time LOL. i rlly need to get into dc properly one day but theres just... so much.. anyways hope u have a nice day/night!
That's valid! I'm happy to hear that tho. There are definitely authors I follow that write for multiple fandoms when I'm only there for one or two. Which is why I'm beginning to make sure I tag the fandoms more clearly in my drabbles and such so you guys can effectively filter what you guys want to read from me or not.
Regardless! I'm honored you try my DC stuff anyway. If you want my list of beginners/easy to get into comics I'm happy to provide a list lmao
But also let me let you in on a little secret. You can easily get into the fandom just by watching Young Justice. Read the Young Justice Fanfic, and slowly you'll find yourself getting introduced to the other batfam members and such and you can easily begin reading normal dc comics fanfiction and understand most everything without having to pick up a single comic.
DC fanfic is really all just Fanfiction of Fanon. Literally none of us actually care about canon characterization or plot. We all got introduced to the characters at some point and took them and made them our own while flipping off canon. I really only read the comics because I like to torture myself lmao
That's not to say that there's not a bunch of easy to get into and super well written comics out there.
ANYWAYS. I hope YOU have a glorious day/night. You're so kind 😭💗💗
