I thought I was doing a kind thing and contributing when I ordered a super plush, fluffy white, cute animal throw blanket for my little GF. I just figured she could snuggle with it and enjoy it. I looked forward to her opening the box upon arrival only to watch her expression of anticipation collapse into what looked like disappointment. She looked at the blanket then glanced up at me and said, “We’re not bears Jimmy, we’re kitty cats.” Oh my goodness, did I miss a memo? my bad...lol We experience oddities around here all the time playing in the ethereal world. Hawks have shown up on my fence post that are normally not found in the city at all. We’ve seen a dozen coyotes in a pack walking down a private street residential area, and even the occasional bald eagle. Call upon whatever unusual animal is showing up in your world and realm now! Banana Fish Art & Staff Book

Look at what came in the mail! Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when I ordered the Banana Fish Art & Staff Book, and it’s been so long since I placed the order that I almost forgot about it. But it completely blew my mind when I picked it up and browsed through the pages for the first time. It’s the ultimate tribute to the most touching human story of all time!

So the whole thing is a four-piece set: two books, one clear file and one envelope.

The first book (the larger one) includes line art of all the official art released to date (key animation, magazine covers, goods, collaborations, etc). It lists where it was featured and who drew/designed it. The archiver in me is ecstatic!

But my favorite is the second book. It features artwork and messages from all the staff who took part in the production of the anime series. They’re mostly thanking other staff for their hard work and talking about what a great experience it was to take part in the production. I haven’t read all of them yet (I find it really difficult to read Japanese handwriting) but I could tell that they were written so candidly. As for the artwork, expect to find anything and everything from character portraits in each staff member’s own style to imaginary scenes (some hit you right in the feels).

And let’s talk about the cover of the staff book... The scanned image above is from the clear file without the watermark of the book title. I’m guessing the artist is Akemi Hayashi (character designer) because she likes using romaji if the 2020 Banana Fish desk calendar is any indication XD I rotated the image over and over again, trying to make sense of what each character was up to. Since this is the cover of the staff book, I think it replicates a common scene from the production room, showing how the staff worked on a tight deadline because everyone seems to be losing their shit. Here’s what I made out of it:

Ash has his glasses on and is working frantically, grumbling “Why does it have to be me?!” He looks very pissed probably because he was asked to finish a task by Max who looks very apologetic behind him. Eiji is running with a bunch of papers and Ibe-san is yelling behind him, “Be careful!” Eiji, who is Ibe-san’s assistant for real this time, yells back “H-hai!” the way assistants do. Shorter enters the room with take-out lunch from Chang Dai and goes “Hey! Sorry for keeping everyone waiting~” Meanwhile, Blanca is probably showing Sing how to write his name in the Cyrillic script and being a real smart-ass about it. He says “You should write it like this,” and Sing seems fascinated. Next to them, Arthur is trying to look chill but at the same time throws dirty looks at Ash. He’s obviously jealous of him because Ash gets everything done again. On the other side, Yut-Lung looks fully concentrated on his screen, but is clearly stressed out as he keeps muttering to himself “Hmm, mmm.” Next to him, while everyone is busting their asses, Dino is drinking a glass of wine and watching YouTube videos, featuring a banana and a fish, with the sound on, because he’s a piece of shit.

Lastly, the two books and the clear file come in an envelope featuring New York at sunset seen from high up in the sky. It’s the last glimpse Eiji had of New York from the plane that we also get to see in the final episode. Okay, I won’t go there, I won’t say anything more.

Seriously, this book filled me with nostalgia and left me smiling. It’s amazing to see how the staff cherished Banana Fish just like we did as fans ❤️

This was just an initial review of the Art & Staff Book. I’ll take my time and go over it slowly and if I come across interesting bits (which I’m sure I will), I’ll post more.

Fandom Giftbox - A Low Key Fandom Event

Hey y'all! I wanted to boost an event that's happening right now over on Dreamwidth that anyone can join! If you have no idea what Dreamwidth is, that's okay! The gist is that it is a journaling/semi social media site. It's based off of LiveJournal (which you may have been a part of or missed completely).

To participate, you will need to join the site. It's easy! And then once you've joined, you can be easily lured into participating in even more and more events there. There's been a lot said by people better versed than I on how to get acclimated to using Dreamwidth, so I won't get into detail here. You just need an account to be able to follow the event community & to submit your comments.

So what's this event?

Fandom Giftbox is a multi-fandom, anyone is invited event where people will gift you drabbles, icons, fanart, or anything else under the sun. Of course you should also be gifting to others as well. It's a nice, warm feeling to drop off a few fills and then open up your own "box" on the reveal day to see what others have thoughtfully given to you! There are just a few stages to the event.

I just want to emphasize, this is open to literally any fandom. Including Original Works. Want more cryptid/cryptozoologist action? You can request it here.

1. Sign Ups

Enter a comment on the 2020 Sign Up post. Be sure to include the General Signup and as many Fandom Signups as you feel like filling out. Three fandoms is the minimum. I've seen people put in as many as 10-12.

2. Fill Giftboxes

Once the boxes are opened, you can browse through the tags on the lefthand side of the journal or on that year's Request by Fandom posts (once they've been created). Look for at least one where you can create something for the recipient. But by all means go hog-wild and fill as many as you'd like. Again, the more that people gift, the more that everyone gets!

Fills are submitted by adding comments to the person's box. They will be "moderated" which just means that the recipient won't see them until they're revealed.

Fun fact! Mods will monitor to see if any giftboxes are "Needy" and empty. Towards the end of the fill stages, a list of these Needy boxes will be available. The goal is for everyone to get at least one fill.

3. Giftboxes revealed!

You get to look through all the fills on your box (and anyone else's). The warm and fuzzies, they are so nice.

So like... what can I give? Or what am I going to get?

Fills will have to follow the "Wants" and "DNWs" (Do not Wants) that are included in the sign-up phase. DNWs have to be followed. Prompts are just suggestions though. So if you ask for Harry/Draco with a prompt for an Auror AU, you may not get the AU. But you would get Harry/Draco.

Same logic follows for the type of fill. There's a sample list of media on the sign-up sheet for what are common fills - "Any, Fanfiction, Fanart (Drawn/Digital), Graphics (Icons, Wallpapers, Manips, Banners), Fanmixes, Fanvids, Meta, Recs, Podfic, Fan Music". If you really don't want to get anything other than fanfic, you are more than welcome to say just that. Just note it might make it harder for people to fill if you are too picky.

Don't forget to Subscribe to Fandom Giftbox, too, so that it'll show up on your Reading Page (which is like a very slow moving Dashboard).

I really wanted to get something out for you all tonight as it’s been a while. If I don’t post tonight it wouldn’t be till Mon/Tues due to my work schedule and adding more onto Part 12. I went ahead with a slightly smaller update which has much in it as we wind down to our final - Part 13 which will be an epic and then one final epilogue.

PART 12

Y/N

Despite being somewhat kidnapped by the Antichrist, life persisted relatively normally if Y/N ignored the fact that no one knew where she was….and she had no access to her phone.

Michael smashed it the moment she tried to fight back. He’d made the phone fly across the air into his open hand and crushed it beneath his boots. It was far too easy for Jim or Duncan to track her through it, thereby jeopardising Michael’s entire plan. Y/N had fought and screamed and threatened him all to no avail.

There was never any stopping Michael Langdon when he wanted something.

For the most part, Michael was the perfect man. Attentive to her every need, he’d bought a calendar with Y/N’s proposed due date written in blood red ink on the correct date. Not that he would miss it for the life of him. In the weeks leading up to the babies birth Michael made sure to spend as much time as he possibly could with Y/N. Baths became a nightly occurrence and while drifting asleep in his arms she’d often hear him talking to his little one.

That was someone they had discovered. Michael’s child, attuned and already so fiercely intelligent could understand its father. The child would kick wildly when Michael came home after running errands or working with the Cooperative. Y/N would be in agony from how excitable the child was, right up until the moment Michael’s warm hands rested on her stomach, his voice soft. ‘Not too hard, little one.’ He murmurs, ‘We don’t want to hurt Mommy, or your twin.’

The baby would stop immediately, bringing out Michael’s beautiful smile. ‘They understand you.’ Y/N marvels, ‘Do you think they know not to hurt Jim’s child?’

‘I’ve asked and asked.’ Michael replies, ‘All we can do is hope for the best, and I’ll be monitoring everything during the entire birth.’

Y/N’s eyes run over his shining hair, golden curls bouncing as Michael rises. ‘Dinner,’ He offers, ’Something nutritious.’ He decides, consulting the kitchen.

‘You can’t cook.’

‘We’ll order something nutritious.’

Y/N can’t help a soft smile, ‘I’m still mad at you.’ She says. ‘Not as mad as Jim and Duncan will be, but I can’t deny that you really want this to go well, don’t you.’ Her eyes fall to her rotund stomach, the due date is any day now. ‘At first I thought you were only concerned with your baby. But having been with you for…’

‘Three months.’ Michael supplies, browsing Uber Eats.

‘I’ve seen how much you love both these children.’

Michael looks up, ‘I love you.’ He says, his voice firm. ‘I love Jim and I love Duncan. Despite our differences…how things are right now. I would never do anything to harm them. I hope you have always believed that.’

Her hand finds his and places it on her stomach, ‘I do.’

Michael’s other hand smoothes over Y/N’s tummy. His eyebrows draw together in concentration as he listens to his child, ‘She’s strong.’ He murmurs, ‘Powerful.’

‘She?’ Y/N breathes.

Michael’s mouth falls open, ‘I’m so sorry!’ His eyes turn immediately regretful, as if he’d like nothing more than to shove his words back into his mouth. ‘I’m sorry! You didn’t want to know!’

‘I didn’t.’ Y/N’s hands take hold of Michael’s again, ‘But I’m not mad. I’m done being mad at you.’

He surges upwards, pulling Y/N into a deep kiss. Her arms wind around Michael and up into his golden hair that tickles her face. ‘I will give our baby the entire world.’ He promises between kisses, ‘I know I’m a monster and I have so much to learn but I vow to you Y/N. I’m here. I always will be. No matter what.’

She hushes him, her fingers working into the back his neck. Michael loosens at once, like water in her grasp as a gasp leaves him. ‘You’re happy with me?’ He asks, ‘You don’t wish you could be back with them do you?’

‘Right now I don’t want anyone else but-’ But no more words leave her lips. A spatter cuts off her very thoughts, both sets of eyes looking down at the puddle quickly staining through Y/N’s sweatpants.

‘The babies,’ Michael whispers, ‘No….they’re too early.’

‘No! Michael!’ She gasps, ‘Please! Tell them it’s not time yet!’

‘Sorry darling,’ The Antichrist sweeps her into his arms, already moving to the bedroom. ‘But when a child is ready to be born there’s no stopping it.’

DUNCAN

Endless phone calls. Hundreds of emails. Duncan had shouted at more people than he could ever remember and chased more false leads than Sherlock Holmes. Even with the combined efforts of the FBI and the Shepherd’s Private Detective it was Jerome who finally came up with a solid lead. At the first Duncan had laughed in his face. The idea so preposterous and crazy. Not to mention something which wasn’t even real. But Jerome, more than anyone Duncan had ever met was persistent till Duncan relented. Finally, someone knew where Michael Langdon was.

‘They’ve got something.’ He declares, bursting into the apartment.

Jim lifts his head, bloodshot and tired eyes trying to take in Duncan’s words, ‘They found her?’ His voice rises with hope, ‘They got him?’

‘I don’t know, Jimmy.’ Duncan says, snatching up his wallet and keys. ‘But we gotta go. She’s heavily pregnant, Y/N will need all the help she can get.’

‘He wouldn’t hurt her!’ Jim cries, staggering to his feet. ‘If he’s even put a finger on her-’

‘We can do this later, Jim. Right now we need to find my fiancee.’

Those words ground Jim at once, ‘You’re right.’ He wipes away his exhaustion on the stuffed whale in his hand. ‘Let’s…let’s go.’

They take the elevator down, Jim trying to maintain his cool. ‘Did the FBI find something?’

‘Jerome.’

‘I knew he was shady.’

‘He certainly has some wild connections.’ Duncan leads the way to an SUV with blacked out windows.

Jim is hot on his heels, ‘With who?’ He opens the door for Jim and climbs in after him, nodding to the albino security. Jim’s eyes rove all over the silent men, ’New uh security guys?’

‘They’re not mine.’ Duncan reaches immediately for the glass Tumblr filled to the brim with whiskey and takes a swig. ‘Jerome is staying with them for now, monitoring things on their end. If they get a whiff that something changes Jerome will let us know.’

He catches Jim’s adam’s apple bob, ‘You don’t mean-’

Duncan hums, ‘Cordelia Goode and her school of witches isn’t fake news.’

‘Jesus Christ.’

‘We’ll need his help too.’

Duncan squeezes Jim’s hand. The poor guy looks as if someone’s told him the sky is pink after all, ‘Breathe, Jim.’

‘I am.’ He wheezes, his eyes never leaving the security duo. ‘Are….are they?’

‘No.’

Both Jim and Duncan jump, not expecting either of the men to speak. Behind matching dark glasses the Albinos give nothing away as they sit as immovable as statues.

‘It was the witches who tracked down where Michael’s been hiding her.’ Duncan continues, ‘And you’ll never guess where we’re heading.’

‘Duncan, please no riddles.’ Jim sighs, ‘I don’t have it in me.’

Sympathy coils inside Duncan. He may have his fiancee on the line, but Duncan knows within his heart of hearts that Michael isn’t going to harm Y/N. He can’t put himself first right now. He needs to support Jim, Jim who has a baby on the line. That little one’s life depends on how quickly they make it to Michael’s location.

He can’t win. He won’t. Even if Duncan has to take him out doing so.

’Maybe he knew of the plan?’ Duncan offers, ‘He was ahead of us the whole time.’

‘But we changed our minds.’ Jim protests, ‘We weren’t gonna go through with it!’

‘Michael might not know that though.’ Duncan glowers at Jim, ‘And if I hadn’t removed that chloroform from your car before Jerome took it to get cleaned we would have been in a lot more shit.’

Jim blanches, ‘You…know about that?’

‘You’re a desperate man, Jim.’ Duncan sighs, ‘So fucking stupid. But desperate. You came upstairs, you didn’t go through with it. That’s why I forgave you in the end.’

Silence falls in the car. It’s not uncomfortable, but filled to the brim with nerves. Anticipation crawls up the windows and elicits goosebumps all over Duncan.

Please. Please let them kids be okay.

‘Why would she go.’ Jim rests his head against the glass, ‘We’re never gonna be enough.’

‘She loves him.’ Duncan admits, ‘You can’t just switch off your feelings for someone. I know I’ve tried.’

Jim’s fingers squeeze Duncan’s back. His eyes penetrate Duncan’s own, ‘Me too.’

The gap between the two disappears as Jim’s lips fall against Duncan’s. His hand cups the back of Jim’s head, keeping their lips together. It’s everything Duncan didn’t know he was craving. Just how much he has missed Jim and that salty spearmint taste he always has from chewing gum. A habit back from his bleaker days to mask the smell of cigarettes and other substances. Jim’s tongue slips against Duncan’s bottom lip, but before they can go any further someone clears their throat. The two men split apart, the door open as Duncan looks out of the window.

‘You’re kidding.’ Jim breathes, his fists clenching together.

‘No one would ever look here.’ Duncan climbs out of the car, following the Albinos. ‘Back where it all began.’ He walks into the all-too familiar building and summons the elevator to take them to the penthouse. The first apartment Michael Langdon ever owned. The one he took Duncan to when Duncan was lost and alone in the world. When nothing made sense but the magical man who swept him out of despair and made him whole again.

Before Y/N. Before Jim.

‘We sold it when you came into the picture.’ Duncan knows that Jim is aware of this place, despite having never been here himself. ‘I didn’t know he still had it though.’

The elevator doors open and Duncan leads the way inside. They ride in silence, but the sound of screams echo from the eleventh floor all the way up to the sixteenth. Duncan turns terrified eyes onto Jim, his horror mirrored in the slackened-sick look on Jim’s face.

‘We’re too late.’

Self contracting

– The contract must be positive

– Procedures should be consistent and systematic

– At least one person should participate

Contracts have the value of involving people in the planning of their lifestyle changes. When you actually write down what behaviors will tied to what rewards or consequences, you will be less likely to forget about it. A significant other may be anybody you can be made accountable and confide in.

Shaping

Self improvement seminars will tell us that is difficult to go cold turkey. Shaping is the process of introducing components of a program sequentially as the individual learns and performs prior steps in the sequence. They have been established to “shape” desired behaviors. Minsk, Belarussia The past several days felt like a dream, no, more like a nightmare, something surrealistic that she was observing from distance, even though she was one of the main characters in the whole mess.

She cannot really remember the way back from Chernobyl trial, she can still see the empty space where Valery was just a moment ago, she can hear Boris’ footsteps and suddenly she was in a car, looking out of the window with watery eyes at the deserted land surrounding them.

Entering her apartment once again brought strange gust of normalness. As if nothing of the past 12 or something months existed. Same old walls, her things lying all around, smell of stale air, kind of the same after you return from a vacation. Except for the fact that she changed, she was looking at everything with different eyes, perceiving with her soul transformed into something else that was yet to be discovered. Something that she needed to learn how to control and to live with.

She drops her small suitcase on the ground in the hallway, not even taking her shoes off, she steps inside the small apartment, mindfully and slowly. Her gaze runs from one thing to another, looking around, making sure that this is really her apartment, she’s back, even checking the calendar that it’s not 1986 anymore.

She stops at a bookshelf full of books, brochures, textbooks, her fingers absently running over the different covers, until they stop over one that’s particularly scuffed, a sign of endless times it has been taken out, held in her hands and read. Her guilty pleasure.

She takes that one out, holding her breath, browsing until she finds the right page and gasps in surprise.

Late fall 1986 Ulana laid sprawled on her sofa, glasses on, lazily going through Dimitir’s notes he had asked her to check. Her focus was still mainly on Chernobyl investigation, but every now and then when she got to Minsk to check on her apartment, get a new set of clothes, she would, of course, visit the institute and meet with Dimitri. He had his own sort of research and valued her opinion, and she was happy to share.

Suddenly a squeak escapes her lips as she jerks her right foot closer to her body, her eyebrows flying high to her hairline in surprise both from the attack on the soft skin of her foot and the sound that echoed through the otherwise silent apartment.

She flashed a death glare towards Valery, who was sitting at the other end of the sofa, whose eyes were, with a deep interest, focused on her feet resting in his lap. Well, she wanted to flash him a death glare, but the corners of her mouth gave her way, and she couldn’t help but smile. He turned his head to meet her gaze, a full smile on his lips, looking proud at the results of his experiment.

“Reflex rating 10 out of 10,” he says in fake serious voice, mimicking lab workers at work.

“You are bored, aren’t you, comrade Legasov,” she chastases him, putting Dimitir’s notebook down, her hand smoothing the fluffy fabric of blanket covering her body.

“No no, finnish your job, I have an experiment of my own to finnish as well, you see, this is only the warm up,” he says, adjusting his glasses, the grin never fading from his face. Ulana groans, rolls her head back against the pillow and chuckles, as she rubs her tired eyes.

“Why do I feel that this experiment of yours will pretty much ruin my attempts to edit the notes?” she raises her eyebrows and puts her foot back into his lap. “Why don’t you read something, I’ve got plenty of books here,” she says, gesturing with her head to the bookshelf behind them.

He thinks for a moment and then stands up, his shadow moving with him around the walls of the living room that is lit with standing lamps, creating warm orange light. She pouts as soon as her feet slide down to the cushions of the sofa, missing his warmth and skilled hands, giving her a nice massage just before the vicious attack.

Her attention turns back to the notes, lost in thought she is just vaguely aware of Valery moving around, examining her belongings. He mumbles several names of the textbooks he had back home as well, chuckling about the fact she kept almost the same pieces he did. And then his eyes fell down to a small brochure, or notebook. The curiosity rises within him. He looks over his shoulder at her, still deep in thought, that lovely wrinkle of hers going down her forehead between her brows. He smiles, and as quietly as possible, takes out the file, careful not to lose any sheet, as the conditions says it has been read many times.

He opens it and to his surprise it’s not a diary (would she even keep one?), but a handwritten copies of various poems, some of which he recognizes from the school days, some completely new to him. He reads through them, sometimes the whole piece, sometimes he turns pages within a moment, lost in thought when one catches his eye.

He stares at the words, the letters, consuming him to his surprise. He never was a poetry person, nor a book person after all (except for textbooks and encyclopedias of course), and suddenly he could picture the children of Pripyat, standing at the railway station-no- at the railway bridge, happily awaiting the train to go somewhere, anywhere. How many of them are still alive? How many of them will live to adulthood?

He feels her eyes on him and makes himself lift his attention from the small book. He finds her resting against the sofa’s armrest, her head slightly tilted, resting on her hands, a soft smile on her lips, glasses gone.

“Which one?” she whispers after a moment, hesitant to break the sacred silence of the intimate atmosphere that suddenly embraced the room.

“The railway station,” he says and before he can continue, she chuckles and closes her eyes. Of course it’s that one.

She turns her body, pushes the blanket away and stands up, slowly walking to him, until her body is pressed against him, her warmth spreading through him, as she lays her chin on his shoulder.

“This is my favourite one as well,” her hand goes up to the poem, fingertips gently caressing the words, and then does the same to the skin of his hand. He takes a deep breath, looks down at her, and as much as her face shows how tired she must be, there’s that small, happy smile, with her eyes still fixed on her book.

And in that very moment, it’s just the two of them, like any normal couple, with no exploding reactor cores, no radioactive particles, no mysteries to solve.

Present: Every now and then he would suddenly appear with that notebook in his hands, usually when they would lie in her bed or sofa after sex, and read her out loud. With Vienna and the trial, his visits stopped and she was usually the one to travel. With the tension among them, he never read her that poem again and she avoided it.

Now, to her surprise, a single dried rose was resting as a bookmark to their poem.

Next day, Belarusian Institute for nuclear energy: Echo of her steps resonated through the empty corridor with dozens of closed door, leading to various labs and offices. She remembers how the rhythm of her shoes against the tiled floor used to sooth her, knowing exactly where her feet are taking her, how her day is going to go.

And now? The building was the same, but people different. Already as she was passing through reception at the entrance, they stopped her right at the tourniquets, taking her aside to check her card, the old lady in thick glasses calling someone over the phone, whispering urgently.

“Is there any problem? I’m the chief nuclear…,” she tried to explain, as the door of the small office shut right to her face. Before Ulana could even get angry, they opened again, the old lady in brown suit with polite smile holding her card. Silent, not a single word of explanation, but the glare in her eyes said everything. She’s not welcomed here.

She knew that this was only the beginning, and mentally slapped herself for not expecting it sooner, being almost angry with herself for being unprepared. As she neared elevator, she could see a noisy group of her colleagues, not really her friends, but somewhat people she knew. They were chatting happily, waiting for the elevator door to open. Yuriy, a tall man in his forties notices her first, and nods his head to greet her. Suddenly the conversation dies out, as the others turn around to look at her, all curious and much to her surprise, scared. Is this how the animals at ZOO feel?

Bitter laugh escapes her lips as she turns on her heels and heads for the stairs. So much for going back to normal life.
