idk i think about them a lot and just like. like they have such different wants, different needs, different approaches and coping mechanisms that sort of inherently rub against each other wrong, and were limited in how genuinely they could connect while they were both trying very hard to uphold the societal roles they’d been made to step into. 

like, i think mary and stede were both at bandwidth capacity in those terms for the vast majority of their marriage. there’s no reality where they stay together and are happy and content! there’s no scenario where they could be sincerely good satisfying life partners to each other. there’s no “well if he’d done abc” or “if she’d done xyz” that can negate that. to the best of their individual and highly incompatible ability, they were both trying and ultimately all they could really land at together was enduring. they are fully not designed to be good spouses to one another lmao

the inherent problem with their marriage/relationship is that neither of them wanted it in the first place and they were completely unable to gel in a way that could facilitate building a genuine understanding foundation. anytime i see the implication that one of them is directly at fault for that unhappiness i get kinda miffed about it tbh, they are just fully incompatible individuals on that level.

and ig thats my lead-in to how i think it’s very Neat and telling that they were only able to be honest and communicate fully and even bond/forge a kinda friendship in the post-murder attempt zone, once any remaining shreds of attempting to adhere to spousal roles had been thrown out the window.

IDK if you're still giving your thoughts on AtLA ships but I would feel remiss if I didn't shoot my shot and pitch yuetara. I know on the surface this is going to immediate read like “yuekka but gay” except I FIRMLY reject the idea that the siblings are interchangable. They bring different dynamics to the relationship! and I love yuekka, don't get me wrong here, but for no fault of its own it suffers from only having a couple episodes to develop and a mostly cishet writing team doing a lot of “he's a guy and she a girl, could I make it anymore obvious?” doing a lot of the heavy lifting. WE know Sokka has a lot to offer as a partner, but from Yue's perspective Sokka is yet another man that vaults into her life and immediately wants [something from] her. 

But Katara. Here she comes, granddaughter of the woman who rejected their status quo that is supposed to be there to keep them safe? And she Got Away with it, went on to lead a happy fulfilled life, and years later that granddaughter rolls right up to their master bender, an elder, A Man, one of the pillars holding up the system, and forming the bars of Yue’s cage as a physical representation that he was Wrong. And this girl spits his authority back in his face, tells him where to shove it, and somehow against every odd, she bends him to listen?? Can you imagine living your whole life being told that every part of you belongs to someone else, that you will never be a person before you're a daughter, wife, mother, princess, and then out of a clear blue sky on the day of your birth, where it's been announced you're about to change hands from one man to another, a girl just like you blows in like a typhoon, and says there's another way. Wouldn't you fall just a little bit madly in love with her?

Yue is shown that she CAN choose freedom for herself... and it makes her choosing duty in the end so much more meaningful? She could walk away. She was not born to be a prop and a sacrifice, no matter what even THE FUCKING MOON intended, she can be a whole person on her own. And ugh, the symbolism of taking up the mantle of the moonspirit so that KATARA can have her bending still!! The heartache of knowing now that everytime she bends, yue is RIGHT THERE. Literally to Moon and the OCEAN paralells FUCK.

Putting aside that korrasami crawled so that a lot of today's queer flavored kids media can even think about walking, I truly believe that if AtLA had been a product of the late 20teens or 2020’s that yuetara would have been THE ship. Anyway, sorry for the inbox blast, you're just the Katara conisuer and if you have thoughts I wanna hear em.

okay, to be clear, all of this is obvious to me. you make a compelling argument, but it’s hardly something I haven’t already considered when thinking about this ship.

however, there’s something very beautiful to me about yue’s story being a tragedy, and I think that while warping that narrative to be about feminist liberation through the power of lesbian love is obviously a noble goal, yue and sokka being two people who are confined and stifled by their respective obligations to patriarchal duty whose happiness is fundamentally impossible because neither of them can imagine a world beyond the bars of their cages is nonetheless far more interesting than a narrative wherein someone “rescues” yue from adhering to patriarchal standards and shows her a brand new world.

it’s actually very fascinating to me that sokka refuses to talk about himself, and whenever yue asks him questions about himself and his home, he is self-deprecating. besides his first attempt to claim that [by virtue of being the son of the chief] he is sort of like a prince himself, it’s clear that spending time in the nwt, who look down on their southern counterparts, wears on his self-esteem because he is predisposed to insecurity. you’re right in that katara is nothing like sokka. she wouldn’t be insecure, dismissive, cagey about her past, tacitly accepting of yue’s resigned obligation to her arranged marriage, or attempting to repress her feelings around yue. she would be bold, loud, confident, agentic, and willingly vulnerable, as she is with every potential love interest. perhaps their relationship would still end in tragedy, but it would be anything but quiet.

and if that kind of obvious bombast is what you want out of a romance, then fine, you do you. but personally, the beauty of yue’s role in the narrative to me is specifically how she foils sokka as someone who sacrifices, diminishes, and martyrs herself for the sake of her people. she literally has obligations to her tribe and to her father!!!!! she and sokka inform each other so beautifully because they are so similar and equally constrained by their perceived obligations and lack of agency.

the fact that sokka is who she gets close to whereas katara merely represents a sort of unattainable ideal to her is intentional, it’s part of the point. if yue is sokka’s moon, shining brightly above him but always out of reach, then katara is yue’s moon, kanna is yue’s moon, every woman who had the agency to liberate themselves from this system in which yue has no choice but to participate is her moon. and by becoming the moon, yue sacrifices herself, her humanity, her body, but she also liberates herself, frees herself from the contraints of being a woman in society. she kisses sokka to reclaim her agency, because kissing him as she had wanted to had been denied to her, and now that she is no longer bound to these earthly standards, she finally can.

yes, we are introduced to yue through sokka and not the other way around (i shouldn’t have to explain that that is how basic storytelling sequencing works), but yue is immediately interested in him, sees a kindred spirit in him, longs for him. maybe he is initially struck by her beauty, but he treats her with kindness and humanity, and he never asks for anything from her besides what she is willing to give him (which is the point. they’re at an impasse, and so their tragedy is inevitable. unlike suki, who is willing to take the lead and basically forces sokka into experiencing happiness lmfao). also, for the record, they already are a beautiful butch/femme couple. to me.

but yeah, if you really want to see a bold, courageous girl fight to liberate a repressed, abused girl from the clutches of patriarchal violence, you can just watch revolutionary girl utena free on youtube. in fact, you all should. it’s much better than atla.

Someone needs to tell Joshua that whatever he is seeing is wrong, that it’s not your form that is dancing with the man so closely on the floor.

It has been almost a year since he last saw you and he never thought that this is how the reunion with you would happen. But what rights does he have to stop you from dancing with this man you are enamored with, so enamored that you can barely shift your eyes away from him.

He thinks back to the time when it was him holding you that close, twirling you around the ballroom and hearing your beautiful laughs and talking to you in hushed whispers about some gossip he heard while playing poker with the other dukes.

Listening to you laugh when recounted an exceptionally funny story from his recent trip.

He thinks about all the nights he spent with you lying on a haystack at the back of his stable, smoking a cigar and talking about life and even though it was not the most ideal place to have heartfelt conversations, you both somehow made it work.

As he looks you, he notices how you at Jeonghan like he arranged in the stars in the night sky for you, like all the galaxy you hold your eyes were just stars burning with love for the man. He realizes that one year is indeed a long time, and a whole lot has changed in just a mere span of 365 days.

It took him just one afternoon to confess that he never loved you, that you were merely a fascination to him due to the off-limits nature of your relationship. It took him just one afternoon to throw away all those nights of laughter, all the evenings of passionate love making behind the theater while his friends were busy indulging in the new melodious shows with their betrothed or wives.

The thought of losing his status of as the nonchalant Casanova was too much for his foolish boyish mind to accept so he did what he was the best at he fled from the conflict. Never the one to think about consequences, or even about anyone but him, he could never fathom the great pain he caused you by leading you on and not only jeopardizing your probable engagement with other potential suitors but also make you the butt of all the apathetic gossip of the older women.

The minute he felt the presence of something brewing between the two of you that felt like it had deeper meanings than what he is accustomed to, he boarded on the first ship to Caribbean, to be as far away for you as he physically can. Only he never underestimated how strong the brewed feeling actually were.

Not one day went on his voyage when he did not think of you, even when he tried his very best to put the you named thought out of his head. Nights of intoxication and passion became a norm for him during his trip and new destinations and people kept him busy.

But still as he looked out of his cabin at the dusky setting sun, he felt the innate need to hold you close to him, to hear you voice calling out to him while he is beneath you making you feel levels of bliss you didn’t know you were capable of experiencing.

So, when he hopped off that ship on the coast of England the only name that echoed in his mind was yours. He knew he had made a mistake, but he had hoped that you would let it slide, that you would take him back into your loving arms like you always did.

But it seems like faith was reluctant to give him a second chance as he noticed you in the first ball of the season and realized that you had been successfully swept off your feet by someone else who was not him. As much as he would have loved to fight for you, he realized he had lost the battle even before it started, when he had left you stranding alone in the park with your bloodied torn heart on the palm of your hand and the emotions slowly bleeding out of your eyes.

Maybe he would have tried to jeopardize your relationship with Jeonghan, if not for the fact the man went ahead and collected all the pieces of your heart and sewed them together for you and filled those eyes that he hollowed out with the most beautiful galaxy that Joshua had ever seen.

Maybe if he had more courage, he would have tried to get you back but he doesn’t so he will stand here and toast you both and make sure his eyes don’t show too much emotions for he still has the reputation of a rake to hold up and rakes don’t cry.

🔥 Kumatora!

Kumatora is so much deeper than she gets credit for. I've made a bunch of analysis posts on her before, apologies to folks who've read all those already, but I'll do a lightning round here. She is the youngest survivor of an apocalypse she'll never remember. She grew up raised amongst gender-nonconforming folks, then had feminine gender conformity suddenly thrust upon her - and hated every second of it. She was given a fabricated "princess" legacy, which she seems to feel she never lived up to anyways. She's both very tough and surprisingly sensitive - the former might even be a front to conceal the latter. She [ definitely ] knew the Masked Man was Claus, and chose not to say anything. She fights on knowing she's gonna lose her whole family, and that she's a part of making it happen. She's got no time to grieve, and she damn well knows it, in stark contrast to Lucas' relationship with loss. M3's writing follows up on very few of these threads, sure. But like! Man, there is so much going on with her!! The amount of stuff that goes unnoticed & unexplored with Kumatora (by both the game itself & the fandom) makes me go hog wild. Fascinating beautiful complex and excellent character. One of the very best in the series.

Bonus: She is definitely a teenager. Idk if this is an unpopular take or not, but I do see a lotta folks assume she's in her 20s during the game. Kid's sprite grows taller after the timeskip, other characters treat her like she's young, she acts like it too. There is no doubt in my mind she's like 16, 18 at the oldest. So when folks portray her as a full-fledged adult within the game's timeframe I'm always like ?? huhhh

NORMAN LEE: based on love, me normally. guy trying really really hard to be a regular guy. has a loooot of problems that stem from this. hugest people pleaser the world has ever known. a little bit offputting. has hair symbolism :-)

MORTIMER: based on memento mori. doesn't have a last name. worlds silliest grim reaper death thing. works in the death division for laplace's inc. lived a pretty normal life. then it died :-(. more here

FERN O'DYNAMIC: based on thermodynamic lawyer. hates his bitch wife (who is a praying mantis for. unknown reasons? will elaborate). just has a lot of anger inside him and doesnt know how to deal with it so he takes it out on other people. he kind of sucks but he's a neat character.

MIRANDA WRIGHT: the person being sung about in thermodynamic lawyer. bug wife (i can blame anything on radiation). she wasnt always a bug she just kinda did that idk. there's not much about her but she's an etymologist.

COTARD LETWO: based on cotard's solution. she has so many problems oh my gooood. deeply lonely person. fascinated with the macabre. its like coping mechanism that makes you worse. im insane about her writing a basic description is so difficult fkdjsfhsjd

RAMONA MCLAREN: based on red moon + hand me my shovel (though the latter was included later on bc it fit her). worlds most intelligent and stupid single celled organism. patheticswag. absolutely batshit insane. attempting to solve the end of the world.

KUIPER SUNSHINE: based on dr sunshine is dead. uh. i dont really know much about her to be honest SORRY... its really silly though + haver of prophetic dreams that she is NOT transparent about. fucks with people a lot just for funsies

COLIN THESIER: based on cover this song. girl who used to be in a band but got kicked out bc of friend drama. survivor of a toxic codependent queer friendship. trying to be a better person bc she used to suck pretty bad unfortunately. a bit more here

theres like a couple more characters but none of them are really important enough to give their own sections. debbie letwo is trip and cotards mom, laplace is the head of laplace's inc, maude is walter's ex wife who left him (heres the scoop on that).

OK NOTABLE CHARACTER DYNAMICS TIME:

VANNIE/NORMAN: norman has been pretending to be a normal dude this whole time + vannie totally fell for it. normans stuck in this friendship bc hes too much of a people pleaser to break it off even though vannie actively drains him emotionally. also he feels validated by vannie thinking hes normal. its so awful im so insane about their dynamic

VANNIE/TRIP: THEY HAAAATE EACH OTHER. their entire core beliefs are at odds (guy who thinks everyone should do their best to conform vs. guy who loves being a weird freak and doing fuck all). their dynamic is honestly pretty simple in comparison but theyre so petty and stupid its insane. if you put them alone in the same room one of them isnt coming out

TRIP/NORMAN: theyre gay together. there's a weird lore thing about the way relationships are handled in mary bell but long story short theres paperwork that has to be filled out if you want to be registered for one and trip thinks its really funny for xem and norman to constantly break up so they'll have to fill out the paperwork because it fucks with vannie. theyre also kind of awful and tragic

WALTER/DOTTY: that is a father and his daughter. walters trying his best and hes doing well but nothing would have been better than just moving out of mary bell township to raise his child.

Pick a character I am likely to have Feelings/Opinions about and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them.

HEHEHEHEHE ZACH BARNNNN I love that guy so much. Hes been through so much shit and hes being so so so gaslighted but he genuinely thinks hes doing the right thing. Idk hes so so compelling to me I really do wish that his story was actually explored more in game- he has a character arc of someone who learns to go against the norm and figures out that what he is doing is not good and incredibly immoral, but because they bench him for case 4, he really doesn't have the resolution that I feel should have been given to his character.

1. One of the top concepts that I feel is essential to depicting this guy (especially post-PLvsPW) is regarding how he perceives his status as a person. Hes an authoritative figure (even though hes left out of the Storyteller and Eves conversations, he's still a prosecutor and has power over the townspeople) and hes also famous in his own special Barnham Way TM (the townspeople fucking love him), but regardless of his fame hes very much "I do this for the whole town, instead of doing things for his own personal gain". Post Case 3 Barnham is fascinating to me because hes taking down the wall of his perceived status and doubting the system that hes very much a cog in the machine with, but I also love really exploring how that effects his relationships with the townspeople and how he thinks of himself. Like- for example, I feel that he would have a shit ton of imposter syndrome, especially because for so long he was considered a celebrity and he was held in very high importance. Post case 3 Barnham would be an overthinker, whos morals and ideas are crashing into each other SO so frequently, giving him a sort of identity crisis (which also continues into post-PLvsPW Barnham's story, especially after Labrelum's experiments are shut down)

THEREFORE I feel that a crucial part of post-PLvsPW Zacharias Barnham is understanding the consequences of doing the work to deconstruct the monarchy that he's been under and a part of for all of these years. Now that he knows that he's been left out of SO many conversations with Eve and The Storyteller, as well as also being mind wiped like his fellow civilians, he deserves to be really really fucking angry. And ofc all Labryinthian civilians deserve to be fucking angry at the Storyteller, but I wouldn't be surprised if Barnham took it VERY personally, especially because his judgements that he was handing down to people was ALSO a cog in the machine that he did not understand to the extent that he should have. To be fair, I do feel like if he did know about what was actually going on, and wasn't mindwiped, he would have said fuck this shit im out a long time ago.

I do feel like post PLvsPW he would feel more of an obligation to stay, because everyone is getting their memories back after such a long time of not having them, and they all need a lot of support. Zach Barn, although he is an authoritative figure in his own special way, would definitely want to help with getting the townspeople back on their feet. However, I do very much headcanon that he does eventually leave several years in the future- he no longer has the authority that he had before, and honestly I dont think the connections he had with the townspeople (before and after) were incredibly strong given that he was perceived both with status as well as with a celebrity like guise. Sure, he stays in Labryinthia for a year after, but I do feel that he does eventually gets out of Labryinthia (it takes quite a while for him to do so, however. I'll talk about that later)

2. This man is so fucking uncultured. Labryinthian Culture is such a fascinating subset of English culture, especially given that they're living in a strange microcosm of British culture, which is, at the same time, entirely separate. Theres so many people from so many different places being put into this program, and of course we dont know the substats of how many people from how many different places are IN labryinthia, but based on accents, etc, they seem to be mostly British/French. However, BECAUSE of that, and also because they're being very mind wiped, Zacharias doesn't know shit about the outside world. This man has to be introduced to what English politics is, what different countries are, how different people interact with each other, etc. given that they have been all gaslighted that Labryinthia is its own separate thing and that there is NOTHING outside of the wall. I would also consider him really shit in regards to certain celebrities or historical figures- he wouldn't know, for example, who the Prime Minister is or who *insert famous singers are*, and would have to be told. Like I do think he GAINS knowledge about what things are over time, but learning about things and culture outside Labryinthia would be a learning curve for him.

I also love to HC that over time he loses his stupid lil knight "accent" (/affectionate) (also idk if its an accent but its certainly the knight like sentence structure) post-PLvsPW if he ever moves to outside Labryinthia, but when hes either stressed or angry it comes out. (but that's a smaller lil headcanon)

3. He has had a REALLY SHIT EDUCATION from this lady who has HORRIBLE ideas and genuinely all of her advice is shit. Therefore, I feel that whenever he goes back to average society, he'll have problems with mundane things that most other people wouldn't have problems with. I've always headcanoned that his sister is Rouge and that he was brought in with his sister because both of them were orphans of some way shape or form, and therefore (if Barnham was a baby), he would have all of his reading and writing skills taught by a lady that (arguably) does not know what shes doing (he also mentions that he was taught by her in the special episodes, but I also feel that its important to mention how young Barnham was when he moved to Labryinthia.) I also think that Arthur would also make the learning curriculum teach him how to specifically do things in a formal knight-like manner, which would also fuck up his vocabulary to a degree. Educationally, Barnham has soooo much to learn, simply just because of the way he grew up.

4. Also, on another side of this, I feel that he would get really really excited (and also really really nervous) when traveling. I dont feel that hes a guy that likes being outside of his comfort bubble (and for example, he went outside of his bubble when going against the storyteller) but once he gets his metaphorical feet wet into traveling his mind would be BLOWN with how much there is in the world. Hes been stuck in his lil Labryinthian-sized sphere for all of his life, and outside of that he really doesn't know much. The world is an intimidating thing, but also something that (when he learns and gets comfortable with it) he would be fascinated to learn more about. It'll take several years until he's at the point where he can travel, simply because he would be stressed out about the idea of going out of his social sphere. But eventually he'd get there!

5. He really needs therapy. This guy needs. so much therapy. Theres so much gaslighting that has gone on in his life and he needs so so much help and support post Labryinthia because (IMO) the feeling of your whole world falling apart at the seams (especially BECAUSE he decided to poke and prod at the idea that the Storyteller is a bad man) is not something that anyone should experience. Thankfully he has the support of some of his friends, and he definitely has his sister to talk to and get to know again but It'll definitely be a journey for him.

Okay this is again me obsessed with lesbian Devil's Minion. I had written I have lots of thought about Armand's gender presentation and her way of comforming or not comforming through the century. I want you that it's long and there is lots of projection going on lmao. Sorry if it took me a while to answer but I have an exam some days ago so I didn't have time/energy to think too much about fandom. So my vision of Armand's gender presentation and issues and journey: I just think that as a Venetian Renaissance girlTM she may have been preassured to dress and act and behave in a certain manner. Just as in canon Armand was groomed to be the perfect imagine of the Renaissance young man but like +100. And imho her relationship with gender would change if the boys in the Palazzo remain boys or if we all change them to be girls. In the first case, I can see her resenting more the rigid gender role of their time, because of the fact that others boys were more free than Armand, and skeaking out with Riccardo&Co to go running on the streets dressed as a paige. In the second case, maybe there is less resentement and more "what if we don't try dressing as young men to go in that tavern/fairy" etc. Regardless of that, I can also see all the people around Armand (Marius in primis but not only) to take the whole objectification+"oh you just look like a doll/such a beautiful girl/pretty face" up to 100 if Armand was a girl. Imagine all the canon objectification Armand face in TVA+ the doll treatment that Claudia received in IWTV (the first book)- that's more or less how I think it would have been for a version of Armand who is a girl during the Renaissance. I imagine she would not be called a cherub but a young nynph, which is. Ick. And I imagine that, like in canon Armand had an ambiguous reaction to being called beautiful, that would be true even more in this au. I can see him (her idk) trying to present more masculine to try to avoid objectification (which is ironic giving canon) and idk wanting to distance herself from the idea of a Renaissance painting. I think during the cult years Armand would have not presented either masculine, andronynous or feminine- just long chastizing black dresses and unkept hair. This is also a some sort of way to distance herself from her apparent physical beauty that is the thing that, as a mortal, people always focused on when looking at her. Then- the theatre years. I see the theatre years as years of experimentation in term of gender presentation because well, I'm a theatre person lmao. I can see Armand, in the rare time he enters the stage, playing a male role (again the projection lmao). And then- after Louis burn down the theatre. The Modern Age TM. I can see Armand experimenting with gener presentation and finding a sort of androgynous persona and allure while still with Louis, because I think it was the beginning of last century, during La Belle Epoque etc, that the imagine of women with short hair or occasionally in trousers started become more popular. I can see Armand cutting their hair every evening like Gabrielle in canon, in modern time, or Claudia in the movie, even if for different reasons. Then the 70s/80s happens and Armand is BLOWN AWAY. By all the nuances and variety and freedom of expression in underground scene and culture that she discover through Daniel. (Also lesbian). Daniel is like, 100% butch lesbian, and we know from canon Armand does consider Daniel as the guide to the modern world. I think in this au Armand, with all her past baggage, would find Daniel's way to express herself very freeing. I can see Armand becoming less and less gender conforming in modern time, maybe even wanting to change pronouns in the 00s, maybe not, but otherwise being very fascinated for multiple reasons by the new freedom and the concept of gender as something who trascend physical bodies.

so i just answered another ask talking about a similar topic (boris' internalized versus externalized homophobia, which you mentioned in your ask), but this is far more specific so i'm gonna focus on what boris is--hope that's okay fsdhjsjfdk.

i think that his flippancy about the sex was less so related to homophobia or theo's discomfort, and moreso about the fact that in all likeliness, boris doesn't care all that much about it. to be honest, i really doubt he thinks about it at all!

boris strikes me as the kind of man who would simply not care to devote any significant amount of time to unimportant matters in his life. he knows who he is, and what he does.

his mother his polish, and his father is ukrainian, and yet he considers himself indonesian. not because he's indonesian by blood or family, but because "Indonesia is the place [he] want[s] to get back to," and therefore that's how he identifies.

does that make complete perfect sense? not personally to me, no--i've lived in one country my whole life, and my lineage is rather clear, so i'm not able to understand how that would feel to him and dictate where he feels he's from. but boris has a complicated relationship with who he is and where he's from--meaning that the lines are messy and not 100% objective.

i think that you can apply a similar line of thought to his sexuality. perhaps he genuinely thinks that him and theo having sex was simply because they needed girls. i'd argue that doesn't negate him being queer.

maybe this doesn't make sense. i suppose i'm trying to say that boris is a very fluid guy, who organizes his identity in ways that are specific to how he grew up, in ways that are complicated and difficult to understand if you've never experienced anything similar. i think that his opinions on his own sexuality would follow similar guidelines.

boris wouldn't consider himself bisexual, or pansexual, or gay or omni or queer or any of the other words that we can apply to him from an onlooker's perspective trying to understand him in terms that make sense to us. boris sees himself in terms of situation and want--and if boris wants to fuck a dude, well. i don't think that he'd think himself any different than anyone else.

so yeah. i think he might fully believe that sleeping with theo was because they needed girls. but i don't think that he bothers to repress his sexuality. i think that his reasoning for sleeping with men and women isn't easily distinguishable as a defined sexuality, it's simply about what he wants and how he feels in the moment.

Part of me wants to believe that Pauling is a relative of the Administrator that she raised to be her perfect little soldier for whatever her Australium mission was. But Ms. Pauling is a human and as much as she tries to be the emotionless obedient thing she feels she needs to be to gain Administrator's favor, she can't help but want to show kindness and create meaningful relationships the best she can through her position.

Ms paulings relationship with the administrator is so god damn fascinating and with it basically being the whole drive of her characters plot in the comics you’d think more people would notice her complexity! Like sure some of the mercs have their own story lines, but paulings really the only one with her own sort of. Idk. Motives. Drives. An explicit story being followed. It makes you wonder what whatever the administrator would have gotten up to in the last comic would have affected her. What’s going on out there! What’s going on in her funny little brain! Girl are you ok!

She seems so headstrong while also being very much under the administrators beck and call. Makes you wonder what she could do if she wasn’t under someone’s authority. Jinx/Powder: An In-Depth Analysis (Of Her Zodiac and Identity)

[Note: This analysis is entirely just an interpretation! I am not completely certain of anything! Just want to give a perspective on Jinx that I'm passionate about, with all the nuances and little things I find to have meaning. As Christian Linke said, he wanted viewers to find their own answers in this series. So that's what this post is. Sorry for the upcoming essay, but bare with me if you can!!!]

[Also Note: If my writing sounds pretentious or wordy I actually genuinely apologize, took too many literature classes as a kid, and my tism really affects my writing. Promise it's just tism, I'm not feeling a certain way or a robot! Maybe, idk...🤖)

First I would LOVE to start off with not only her astrological sign...but ALSO how the symbolism in this series really fleshes it out.

I would like to think that since Arcane is very focused on things of symbolic nature (ex. drawing connections to Jinx's entire design to her childhood self down to her face shape, having moments that show her childhood innocence in subtle/symbolistic ways, her color scheme connecting her to Vi, etc) that Arcane itself would similarly have a lot more meaning in small things than what might have been seen at first.

To begin this, I want to start of with the sign I see the most in her character (may not be the most agreed upon, BUT PLEASE HEAR ME OUT...

🐟 Pisces 🐟

Ah, yes. The fishies. The sensitive, emotional, intuitive, psychic-psychotic, trusting, adaptable, scatterbrained blue little baby of the stars. But for Jinx it is more than just the fishies!

I feel like Jinx also has a fire in her. A fire like her sister, just put out at times by the water sign of Pisces. I mean, the fascination she finds in explosions, tendency toward fiery aggravation, passionate creativity, and heart-driven traits... I feel like Aries also suits her. But why not both? Because that's possible, they're neighbors on the chart. So that could mean that she's on the cusp between those two signs, having both traits simultaneously.

And what exactly is the cusp of Pisces-Aries so fittingly called?

The Cusp of Rebirth

It's the SYMBOLISM! (maybe not literally, but in many different small aspects!!!)

Not only would Jinx being on that cusp explain why she connects with Vi (who definitely has strong Aries placements behind that Taurus sun!) but ALSO,

HER ENTIRE ARC IS FOCUSED ON REBIRTH.

From Powder, to Jinx.

The scene with her and Silco in the water, when he does than whole dip in the river thing, also focuses on rebirth. Her rebirth, just as Silco says he did the day Vander betrayed him.

"That day, I let a weak man die. And another was reborn." -Silco, talking to Jinx in the water

And after Silco says those words, he lays Jinx in the water to let Powder die, and allow her to be reborn as Jinx. Because to him, Jinx is perfect. And Powder holds onto so much fear of pain, in a way, he wants her to let that go.

Not only is the symbolism of water-related elements of their relationship SCREAMING water signs to me (Jinx being Pisces, Silco being Scorpio), but the fact that in this intensely deep moment REBIRTH is the focal point.

And what better to embody that than the Pisces-Aries Cusp? The Cusp of Rebirth? A scene that literally is meant to represent Powder dying, and Jinx coming out the other side, as a stronger more authentic identity for herself above all. To leave her pain behind, as Silco said, and come out stronger than before. To have strength. Something she ALWAYS admired and idolized Vi for, trying to mimic it in the spirit of her older sister who she looked up to more than anything.

In this way, she became stronger, as she always wanted to be. For herself, but in a way, also for Vi. As a way to internally and externally prove something she always wanted to.

"You never left. I always heard you. Shadows in the streets, prickles on the back of my neck... Your voice---pushing me, picking me up." -Jinx, talking to Vi

She adapted (to her environment), as Pisces do, and transitioned to a form of herself she viewed as higher, better, stronger. Her. I mean, Neptune (the ruling planet of Pisces) is literally the planet of transcendence and mysticism.

Which also, somewhat, reminds me of how she somehow intuitively cracked some ANCIENT RUNES (probably outdated to the point of illegibility) and made a weapon in, like, a quarter of the time Viktor and Jayce did (no offense Viktor my beloved). Her Pisces intuition can even be drawn back to when she dodges that attack from the Firelights---not even seeing it come from behind her, just feeling it. Very Pisces-esc.

BUT THATS NOT ALL.

1. Butterflies! Her butterfly gadget, and the way that Fortiche really is specific on how they portray things, really spoke to me. Butterflies symbolize TRANSFORMATION and CHANGE, along with comfort, connection to the spirit realm, and a need for gentleness.

2. Her bunny stuffed animal! It is a sensitive, emotional piece specifically given to her from Vi, yes. But also, in the Chinese zodiac, the Rabbit quite literally is the equivalent to the Pisces zodiac! No coincidence Vi gave it to her, it suits her very well to me. Quick, swift, witty, vigilant, ingenious, sensitive, fearful, smart...so many things that scream Jinx! And her pigtails remind me of floppy bunny ears...

3. Color scheme! For both Pisces and the corresponding Chinese zodiac, her color scheme really resonates with the official ones related to this star sign. Blue, pink, purple...very much a lot of the colors you see with Jinx!

4. Water Symbolism! Water signs usually only genuinely are understood by other water signs, like she was with Silco (Scorpio). Not only that, but the "Fishbones" she literally talks to (spiritual in a way, speaking to the spirit and representation of Silco) is WATER ORIENTED. Aka fishy oriented. It's a MAJOR focal point that is built up to in the end, the finale. It's what she uses to not only "show them all" like Silco wanted all along, using a weapon she made representing him, it also helped define herself as Jinx, in a way. Genuinely, it seemed to me like a bridge between them that connects them, even after him being gone. And that connection would be very suited with Scorpio and Pisces, two signs that understand each others' depths (not to say Silco doesn't definitely have some big Pisces placements in his chart, really would explain their bond similar to Vi and Vander).

If that's not a water sign I don't know what is.

There is so much more. The shrine she made for Mylo and Claggor, which is so spiritually connected and resonant in itself. The fact that she never comes in first place (very Aquarius-Pisces vibes, but that's for another rant, possible Aquarius-Capricorn rising Jinx!), and the way that she genuinely knows and admits when she makes mistakes. Calls them mistakes, doesn't try to hide that but is deeply ashamed by it, mournful. And it EATS HER ALIVE not being able to resonate with people, letting people down, not being good enough for others. She DOES care. Doesn't shrug it off or deny her mistakes, they just make her cry and wish for what could have been [insert song here]. And regret, deeply. Nothing surface-level for Jinx. Everything is deep, kinda like water (lol).

But also, just to leave off here, look at the Creator and Writer, Christian Linke's, birth charts (both Vedic and Western). Why's that relevant? Because he really was one of the first, if not the first, who saw the flesh and bone in these characters! He pitched ARCANE! And, as he said in the documentary, he really put and left more than a chunk of himself within this series. If his emotions and diction, which connect DIRECTLY to a person's chart, influenced Jinx at all...I want to bring it up! Because the connections are a bit insane to me. They're way too coincidental.

So, if Christian had as much emotional input as the documentary talks about, I would like to shed light on how his chart could influence that. Because the connections and similarities are so incredible. That, and the fact that it was even officially posted that she has an Aquarius placement makes it all the more mindblowing! Makes me love science and astrology even more.

So I'm just gonna leave his chart there, for giggles, a little snack for thought :)

Anyway that concludes my rant! At least in this post! I would love to go on more but I don't intend on making people read a book, even though this practically is. Wait I want to hear the thousand year rant about the scene in s1e3 👀 If you feel like sharing. No pressure!

TK slams his glass of water down so hard onto the table that it sloshes out. The kitten is big mad. His brag about saving someone from the Crysler Building, lol okay sweetheart we see you. You're mad but you also want Carlos to think you're impressive, and relatable tbh, Carlos is a snack and a half and I would also want him to like me. Carlos's "if I was a less secure MAN" and the face he makes idk that's just so funny to me but also so stupidly sexy. And also fascinating because Carlos is kind of not a super secure man? Like in some ways he is, he's very confident and direct, but also he's so hung up on the fact that he thinks his dad thinks he's soft, right. Like he doesn't think his father thinks he's good enough, or tough enough or manly enough, and he lowkey thinks Gabriel thinks that because Carlos is gay, and that's kind of a massive issue for him. I guess probably the show didn't know that at this time, it's such an early episode and I'm positive they don't put as much thought into these things as we do lol because they're just doing their jobs meanwhile we (I) am over here losing our minds over every tiny detail. But still. Also the fact that Carlos had to work up the nerve to ask him out idk that's just so freaking sweet. That part of the line gets me every single time. Carlos liked him SO MUCH right from the very beginning. Carlos has one of those hopeless romantic hearts and he saw TK and just went "that one. him. that one's mine." TK just FUMING, the feral cat is absolutely furious but also kind of in the wrong here, and Carlos calling him on it. I LOVE a relationship where one person is used to getting their way and the other one just comes in like a bulldozer and holds up a mirror to them. One of the best things Carlos does for TK is allow TK to truly see himself. Carlos doesn't let him get away with his shit. He loves him, but he holds him accountable, and TK needed that. I headcanon that TK had very ... let's say indulgent parents lol. Owen was the absent father who probably showed up now and then with a bunch of presents, and Gwyn strikes me as a very "my baby has never done anything wrong in his life" type of mother, at least when TK was little. TK really is used to getting absolutely anything he wants and used to being a brat and Carlos doesn't let him and I love that. TK grows up so much through their relationship. And then obviously the 'and I'm packing a piece' line LIKE. I am obsessed, OBSESSED, with the way Ronen plays that moment. It's like 3 seconds but you can see like 8 different emotions pass over his face. The way he just stops in his tracks, his whole tantrum completely forgotten. The way he sort of looks down a little bit, like he's going "... where. Where is it tho. I've been with you all night how did I not know you have a gun on you. Where is it Carlos." The way you can see him almost surprised by the fact that he's so instantly turned on?? This man is a liberal gay from Manhattan he didn't ever think he would find a gun sexy but in this moment he does and it fully catches him off guard. The way Carlos can so easily disarm him with just a few quipped words??? TK is so shocked by it, he's so used to being in control I think and Carlos takes that away from him and it surprises him but he's so into it. TK in this moment is still in the headspace of not really WANTING to like Carlos, but boy does he. He was all up on his bitchy high horse and then Carlos said five words and TK just started hearing circus music in his head. See it is a mistake to get me going. I have a lot of thoughts and I really need to be told to be quiet.
