so we all know that the got show wildly underutilised the direwolves and robbed them of all magical significance, which annoys me because the starks finding the direwolves in chapter one of got seems to be a direct counter to the existential threat posed by the others in the prologue. they don't just mark the beginning of political upheaval, but also the return of magic to westeros. like daenerys' dragons, they are the magical counterbalance to the evil power of the others - one of the many incarnations of ice in the prophesised song of ice and fire.
having said that, they also have personal roles for each stark. the nominal determinism of the pups has been well analysed but i think you could read thoroughly into the behaviour of each one - for instance, nymeria connecting arya to westeros and her identity as a stark warg and summer matching bran's weird-girl green-seer energy.
to cut a long-winded post short, however, i think ghost is going to have to die in order for jon to be resurrected. i hate the thought as much as you likely do - ghost has been a close companion of jon and the reader throughout the series but unfortunately, that's what makes the sacrifice so meaningful. i do think jon's resurrection will require a sacrifice: it won't be like the show where jon sits up, is sad for five minutes and then hops off the dissection table to swing a sword about.
one of the many things ghost's name seems to foreshadow is jon's resurrection. not only that, but theon suggests the albino wolf is bound for death, saying he will "die faster than the others". however, when jon retorts "this one belongs to me", he takes responsibility for ghost's life. this is what all the starks do for their pups, but in jon the rescue is especially marked: he turns back to find ghost and whilst he is the runt of the litter, under jon's care he grows to be bigger than his siblings. jon gives ghost life and it makes a lot of symbolic sense for that life to be eventually returned. moreover, ghost with his weirwood colouring represents the old gods of the north - jon even muses that he might be some kind of agent of them. i don't think the lord of light alone can bring jon back: it has to be a rebirth of ice and fire, a spring-like mix of both elements of jon's nature.
jon's resurrection will mark a major change for the direction of his character and is potentially the first step towards realising his targaryen heritage and maaaybe becoming a dragon rider. the death of ghost, of his past as the invisible bastard of winterfell, might be necessary for this. however, i don't believe ghost or his identity as a wolf, as a stark, will truly leave him. if he has warged into ghost and lives on for a period of time in his body, it only makes sense that ghost will live on in him even after he has died. prolonged warging can create slippage between man and beast which we've already seen between living jon and his direwolf. we won't lose ghost entirely and perhaps with the affirmation of robb's will and finally turning home towards winterfell, jon will realise he doesn't need the physical emblem of a direwolf to be a stark - he has the wolfblood of the old gods and the first men within him always.

SoapGhost Aus that have been bouncing around in my head
I have thought way too much about these, they’re really long but I crave these fics.
Tumblr media
Mer/Biologist Au: (this already kinda exists) Shark/or Orca mer!Ghost, Biologist!Soap who works at a rescue aquarium/museum. Ghost gets caught in one of they’re nets while tracking a recent release, while soap is on a day off. He get brought back to base(what Soap and Gaz call it) and put into a holding tank, Ghost is not very fond of that. Unknown to Ghost, there is another Mer in the aquarium already, Price a shark/or Orca as well who unfortunately cannot be released since he needs prosthetic fins after begging attacked, and lives in the main room (a huge tank, like the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom). He mostly hides during public hours in a connected tank away from eyes, but he is very kind to the staff (only 141 & laswell). How Soap and Ghost first meet is Ghost drags Soap under while he’s walking across the catwalk of the holding tank. Ensue Soap trying to befriend the grumpy Mer. OTHER CHARACTERS: Alex probably a dark blue Discus Mer (bc I think blue suits him but can be changed). Farah could be either Biologist or Mer, Graves definitely works at the aquarium and is a meanie, don’t know where Shepard fits but definitely a bad guy. Alejandro and Rudy are definitely both Mers. Valeria is baddie, but in a good way, she helps the mers but is disliked by Alejandro bc she (purposely) almost ran him over after a argument.
Wolf Walker Au: Soap is a wolf walker and Ghost is a Townie who’s family was killed by wolf walkers. Soap lives with his family in the woods, he is the only male in his family (bc honestly this man acts like he grew up with all sisters) and struggles to protect them from hunters set on destroying them. Chomps down on Ghost, who tracked him down one night, he didn’t mean to but Ghost had him pinned. Now Ghost is panicking bc he is the hunter become the hunted, something he’s hated forever. Soap thinks is fun after he gets snapped at my his mother. Ghost tells Price, another hunter, who tells Gaz who tells Roach, who tells the rest of the 141 hunters. They all swear not to hunt him unless he hurts a human. Ghost agrees. Eventually Soaps family gets tracked & captured in wolf form and is held captive in the town. Soap goes feral bc we love. Ghost is torn bc he known the pain of loosing family but he can’t let soap hurt innocent people. Ghost & the others talk him down and devise a new plan to free his family. It goes side ways, but ends with them being free. The 141 hunters follow the wolf walkers to a new forest to build new away from the hate.
Dragon Rider Au: we love a classic dragon fic. This stems from another Au by someone I can’t remember their name, buts they’re is based off GOT, where Ghost is a Targaryen (I think?) I love that Au. This Au is similar but with out the GOT, where Soap is a knight that gets saved by a dragon rider during battle, he never gets the rider name but remembers the dragon vividly and the mask. Soap wanted to be a rider but his knighthood to his monarch forbids him from riding, so he often thinks of the rider. Until one day the baron of house Riley is known to visit, Soap nearly fell over when the dragon that lingered in his thoughts blasted him with strong gusts from its wings. And it’s the masked rider! Soap is excited to see him again and finally thank him for saving his life. Then Soap gets assigned to Baron Riley to aid in a soothing rising conflict in bordering lands, he is even more excited. Less excited to learn he gets stuck on the ground with his horse while his leader is overhead. Soap eventually cracks the Baron and becomes close friends, he also gets to ride the dragon when they get separated, leaving soap with Ghost’s dragon. I think Soap should get his own at some point and then they can both be menaces of the sky.
Artist/Barista 141 Mafia Au: now this is also a things but this Au is just too good. Soap is a artist who works at a local cafe with his best friend Gaz, a free lance photographer. They live together and are chaotic besties. The cafe is a front for the 141 group, the leader Price owning it, both Soap and Gaz and unaware, bc Price is a stickler for keeping everything under tight wraps. Ghost is second in command is a feared by most members for being so ruthless and cold. He hangs around in the corners menacingly but is SO smitten for Soap, he is absolute fool when he speaks to the artist, like he’s so thankful for his mask or he’d be a glow stick with how red he gets, and he always complains to Roach after he embarrasses himself again. Roach thinks it’s funny but will stick with his bestie as his wingbug. One night after closing, Gaz and soap get snatched by Shadow company, 141’s biggest rival, they destroy the cafe and hold the boys for ransom. Both a confused like “who?” Cut to hurt comfort, after the two get tortured and tossed to the street after the shadows realize they really don’t know anything and Price finds them with busted noses, wet clothes and so many bruises. Ghost is infuriated when Price returns with them all busted up but informed of what their place of employment actually is. A lot of gang fights and plan to remove shadow company from the city, Soap gets to blow stuff up, Ghost gets a lil better at voicing his feels for soap (still bright red tho) and Price gains to new members who are way better at fighting then their other jobs. Also I feel like 141 would be a classy mafia, like 3 peice suits with slim bullet vests and under arm holsters.

BECOMING CHIEF || HTTYD MOVIES | BREAKING DOWN HICCUP (DEEP TALK)
Blog Post Title : Breaking Down Hiccup (Deep Talk)
Blog Post Series No.: #1
Title : How to Train Your Dragon 2
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: This isn't a full review on HTTYD 2 the movie.
Once again, Hiccup floating in the air, gliding through the skies on Toothless, seamlessly flying on invisible currents is cathartic. I just wish I could breathe air that clear and fresh. I wonder if some time away from everything will make it easier to make tough decisions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So far, I don't think I address the question on whether Hiccup wants to be chief. My reviews on Riders of Berk refer to the village's changing perspective of Hiccup and them taking to him as leader. I don't think I've discussed whether Hiccup wants the job. Besides, that question isn't material at the time and space ROB was just yet. Hiccup was still, a kid.
Tumblr media
In HTTYD 2, we know he doesn't want to be chief because he still feels lost. Incomplete. His thirst for adventure continues and he will harken to anything calling his name (apart from his dad). But Astrid's advice rings true. He has had so many missions, adventures, discoveries in ROB, DOB and RTTE but they did not quench or answer the inner call to "Who am I?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even for us, sometimes wanderlust is just a distractions to the grand scheme of responsibilities we are suppose to take on to answer the question we keep asking.
Believing that being chief isn't innately him, is the very doubt that causes him to discount how much of a born leader he is.
"I was so afraid of becoming my dad, mostly because I never thought I could. How, how do you be someone that great, that brave, that selfless? I guess, you can only try," Hiccup says at his father's funeral.
Self-doubt is the thief of destiny. As such, even after his father's passing, Hiccup struggled to step into the role, to feel worthy of it, until Valka said that his father always knew he was going to be great.
"He always said you would become the strongest of them all and he was right. You have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon only you can bring our worlds together. That is who you are, son."
A CHIEF PROTECTS HIS OWN
You see. This may sound like news to Hiccup, but for those who have been following his story, he has always been brave and selfless. He protected Berk and his riders, diving to their rescue even at the expense of precious treasures.
Even to the extent of protecting day-to-day relationships. Like what he did for Snotlout at Thawfest, the encouragement he brings to Fishlegs, the validation he gives the Twins. Training dragons to live w Berkians. Defending Berkians. Saving anyone that needs saving. Helping anyone that needs help. Without question or quandary.
He thought that the answer to Who am I was out there, but it was in him all along. And when you are this blind to all your attributes, the only way to answer the all-asking question is by stepping out of your comfort zone.
He has always protected his own. It started w his undying loyalty to Toothless, protecting him from day one.
Tumblr media
I hate that Stoick's death had to happen, but it was that drastic nudge forcing Hiccup into the shoes he was always meant to fill.
Tumblr media
Parts of me feel like I understand Hiccup, 15-year-old Hiccup and 20-year-old Hiccup because I AM HICCUP. Sure, I don't have a village to run and no legacy to fulfil, but boy am I afraid to do something because I don't think I can.
This show just speaks to me because I hear that same internal struggle tugging at my heart. Where do I fit in this world of very definable squares?
But maybe that's the answer I need to hear. That to find it, I have to go towards it. And to believe, that "this destiny" was mine all along.

Two Bad Choices
Hiccup is aboard a Dragon Hunter ship and afforded two bad choices by Viggo.
The darkness was comforting. It offered assurance that whatever he opened his eyes to would be worse than it.
He opened his eyes anyway, or tried to. It was more difficult than he was used to. He was in a ship’s cabin which swayed gently with the waves underneath. A desk bolted to the floor held maps, charts, and dragon bones. A banner hung on the wall behind it, depicting a flaming fist. No one else was in the room, and, most unusually, Hiccup found that he was not bound in any way. He was slumped in a corner of the quarters, divested of his sword, his leg, and his shoulder armor. His neck ached, both from its unnatural angle, and more acutely on one side.
Footsteps thudded outside the door, then it burst open. Ryker stormed in, glared around, and found Hiccup. His eyes narrowed. “Why isn’t he bound, Viggo?” Hiccup’s fists clenched, but his limbs felt leaden. Why couldn’t he move?
Viggo appeared in a more leisurely fashion behind his brother. He smirked at Hiccup before answering. “No need, brother. The elevated dose of sedative in his system has rendered him quite, aha, helpless.” Hiccup’s face burned. Drugged. Of course, that had to be the reason. No wonder they didn’t have to restrain him, he couldn’t even lift a finger. He could barely keep his head up.
Ryker squatted in front of him. “Helpless, eh? I’m sure my men would like that.” Hiccup’s mind went white with panic and Ryker smiled.
“Now, now, brother,” Viggo snapped, settling himself at his desk. “No need for that.”
Ryker snorted. “What? He’s sunk and killed enough of my men that the rest of them deserve to beat seven kinds of hell out of him.”
“Be that as it may, we have other plans for our guest.” Ryker grumbled and sat down. “Is the Night Fury secured?”
“It was, up until about ten minutes ago,” Ryker snarled. “That damn rider girl blasted a hole in the cell, got on the Night Fury, and rode off. Her Nadder, too. I’ve already punished the lookout on duty for that.”
Hiccup’s heart leapt. Astrid had rescued Toothless! They knew he was in trouble!
“No matter,” Viggo said with a wave of his hand. “It would have been nice to keep them both, but I am more prepared to deal with the loss of the dragon than its rider.” He smirked at Hiccup again.
“Don’t see why this runt is worth more than the last Night Fury,” Ryker grumbled. “For a mug of piss-poor ale I’d’ve shot that girl out of the air.”
“Patience, Ryker,” Viggo intoned. “He is more valuable than you give him credit for. The Night Fury cannot fly without him, for one thing. I need not explain to you why this is a benefit to us. Those other riders are followers, not leaders. They cannot conduct an effective attack on us without Hiccup, especially if we are using him as a bargaining chip.”
“That’s more like it,” Ryker said. “What are we demanding? Gold?”
Viggo laughed. “Don’t be so small-minded, Ryker! Gold and treasure, while nice, are not exclusive to the riders. We can make them catch dragons for us.”
Hiccup’s stomach sank like a sundered ship. Oh, gods. They’ll be forced to capture dragons and deliver them to certain death, afraid they’ll kill me if they refuse. I have to get out of here.
“What about some sort of tithe?” Ryker was musing. “I wouldn’t mind clipping Berk’s wings. A thousand gold pieces a month, do you think?” Already sunk, Hiccup’s stomach clenched. And they’ll bankrupt Berk at the same time. I’m not worth it!
Viggo chuckled. “All in due time, brother. Hiccup, are you awake enough to join us?”
Hiccup didn’t reply at once. He wanted to spit fire in their faces, but the drug still held him down. “They won’t do it,” he managed, raising his head with effort. “They won’t hunt for you.”
“But will they hunt for you?” Viggo asked. “Ryker, bring him.” The other Grimborn approached and lifted Hiccup bodily from the corner. Hiccup hated how his limbs flopped, but he could do little about it. Ryker set him in a chair facing Viggo, one with armrests and a curved back that kept him from sliding to the floor.
“They’ll get me out of here,” Hiccup said. Anger and no small amount of fear was making it easier to function, despite the drug. “You’ll regret all of this. My friends aren’t stupid. They’ll see through your blackmail!”
“Not blackmail, in point of fact,” Viggo said, raising a finger. “The word is ransom, dear Hiccup. We are demanding a ransom for you. It is not something that you or they are in a position to refuse.”
“Aren’t you supposed to be the smart one?” Ryker chimed in nastily.
Viggo permitted himself a smile at the insult. “That being said, Hiccup, hostages are ordinarily kept incapacitated. I see that your dose of sedative is wearing off, and we cannot have that. I will, however, give you a choice: Another dose, just to keep you weak, or restraints. I must say, it’s not as though you could run.” He tapped Hiccup’s leg on the desk. “So, shall Ryker fetch the bottle or a rope?”
Hiccup gritted his teeth and glared at Viggo. Two bad choices. He hated being tied up and helpless, especially without his leg, but he knew that being unconscious and at the mercy of a ship full of dragon hunters was worse. “Get the rope,” he snarled.

Screaming Is All He Hears
Summary: Set after Httyd 2. Hiccup has been captured, but Toothless can still hear him.
Warning: Implied/referenced torture
Rating: Mature
Characters: Toothless, Hiccup, Astrid, Valka
Pairing: /
Fandom: How to Train Your Dragon
Whumpee: Hiccup, Toothless
Author's Notes: Based on a sudden idea I had and written on a whim.
Enjoy!
XOXOX
By the time Toothless touches land, Hiccup has already been captured.
The Trappers have come to avenge Drago, taking them completely by surprise. The Dragon Riders know better than to leave Toothless in the water, their leader used to wear a cape made out of Night Fury hide. But the fleet keeps them from saving Hiccup. They have to watch them grab him by the hair just as he surfaces and pull him into the dinghy.
Toothless is unconscious. Otherwise, he would’ve protested. He would’ve blasted the water, overturning the dinghy and giving them the perfect opportunity to swoop down and save their friend, but he’s not awake and so the Dragon Riders are left with no other option than to retreat.
The second they put him down, he wakes up. Astrid barks orders, shouting for the A-team to prepare for a rescue mission. They would need the help getting their chief back.
Toothless can’t believe they would just leave him, angry that they would choose him over Hiccup, no matter how much more sense it made to get the Night Fury out of there first. He approaches Astrid, pushing her towards the cliff, telling her to get on his back so they can go.
“Toothless, we can’t! You can’t fly!” She protests, stepping away from him. He looks down at his tailfin and notices that his prosthetic has been torn to shreds.
She’s right, he can’t fly.
So he roars at her. He knows Hiccup keeps replacements, he even has that automatic tailfin for emergencies. Give it to him, he’ll go blasting in and rescue his human himself.
“Toothless, I don’t have time to argue!” But that is what she says before she walks off, barking more orders.
He turns to watch the fleet before Berk, wondering just how hard it’s going to be to gather a small army. It’s true, they’re tribe has fallen on tough times; Drago destroyed much of their home, their food, their weaponry. But surely, a people of dragons and humans can think of something quick to save their chief?
He hates that all he can do is wait, pacing around, ignoring the aching in his side where he was hit. He shouldn’t have flown so close, should’ve minded their range.
The fleet hasn’t advanced since they got Hiccup, a worrying sign. There’s much they could want from him. Information… leverage. His Rider is a valuable prisoner. Toothless is filled with anxiety. The chaos behind him is nothing like the chaos inside his mind.
Minutes pass. Minutes, minutes, minutes! Then half an hour, maybe more, they’re still organizing! It’s almost as though everything and everyone falls apart without Hiccup around to lead them.
And that’s when he hears it.
Screaming.
It’s not from the people around him, though loud as they are. Astrid and the other Dragon Riders, they aren’t hearing what he hears. Toothless’ head snaps towards the fleet of ships. The sounds are faint, faraway, but the distance doesn’t matter to his annoyingly sensitive ears.
Unfortunately, he can recognize them from anywhere. It’s Hiccup.
Once again, he roars at Astrid, at Eret, at Valka, at anyone willing to listen. At least Valka comes to his side, kneeling, trying to ease him, but she should know better. Even though she can’t hear what he can.
His heart skips a beat in fright. The sounds are bloodcurdling, like he’s screaming his throat raw. Toothless doesn’t want to imagine what’s being done to his human for him to make these sorts of wails.
The Trappers want something from him and they’re willing to go far to make him give it to them.
Another bout. It’s like his chest is torn into, his heart clawed out and grinded into the dirt. It happens over and over again with every scream that reaches his ears.
Horrible things are being done to Hiccup.
Toothless looks behind him, still no progress. He looks towards the ships, inching over the cliff, tiny pebbles crumble off. He wants to go. He needs to go! Hiccup is in trouble and he’s the only one who can save him.
“Toothless, Dear,” Valka’s reassurances fall on deaf ears. Hiccup is the only one he can hear at this point.
He’s screaming.
Crying.
Pleading!
There were Hunters amongst those Trappers, too. Leftover men from Viggo, Krogan and Johann’s forces who had nowhere to go and a long history with- and a lot of hatred for- the Dragon Riders. That’s a lot of bad blood and they have the source of it all.
Hiccup is all alone with them.
There’s no telling what’s happening to him and Toothless can’t save him. This distance between them is excruciating.
More screaming. Bloodcurdling, raw, heart-shattering.
Screaming is all he hears.

Why does everyone hate on Rescue Riders. Like. I just rewatched it after finishing RTTE and it's cool! I realize it's a bit childish and all but like- there's a not-quite-subtle movie reference in the Golden Dragon special and the songs in the Songwing special are actually so good. Stop hating this show just because it's for kids, it has a lot to offer!!!

If those rumors about Daeron "Hightower" prove to be true, do you think they'll cut out Tessarion entirely then?
Yeah, probably ...
I wonder if they chose to do A+C=D more out of budget than anything.
I would imagine that Dragon battles cost a lot of money and having one more dragon rider is just out of reach at the moment, especially with the Warner Brother's budget cuts across the board.
Plus, I think that the insane chemistry and good vibes between older Alicent and Criston was a happy accent that they'll probably want to capitalize on and expand upon.
In the books Criston was loyal to Alicent out of duty to what he thought is right and died trying to rescue her. In the show, it's clear that Criston and Alicent are devoted to each other completely out of love and companionship. Which I think really works on a whole lot of levels as a foil to Daemon and Rhaenyra.
Especially at the end where Daemon abandons Rhaeynra cause she goes mad with power and dies for his own glory. While Criston remains Alicent's greatest champion to the very end - he's literally ride and die for her.
I feel it's sort of fitting that the couple that is most passionate and unencumbered by values and morals end up hating each other, with Rhaenyra learning about Daemon's death and being like - "Fuck that guy." while Alicent and Criston, who love each other but refuse to let their feelings overcome their duty and responsibilities, actually have longevity and truer feelings for one another. Alicent in the books - who has no connection to Cole, but a rumor that she might have been in love with him when they were young - mourns and grieves for him the rest of her life.
Sorry, took a rabbit trail ...
But to tie all in, I think they'd be a fool, not to capitalize on the gift of the unintentional Guinevere and Lancelot romance of Alicent and Criston found through the actors choices on the show by not throwing in a Galahad figure in Daeron to fortify that through line and give it more emotional weight.

Chapter 7/To Be A Hero (Wild Skies AU)
Tumblr media
The wind howled once more over the edge of the mountain. Berk was not the biggest island in the arquipelago, but it sure had some tall rocks for its size. Astrid's hair was getting a bit longer than she normally would allow it to be, and it flowed towards the horizon as she attempted to clear her mind.
Three weeks ago, Hiccup kicked her and her friends onto an island that was within reach to the patrols of Berk. She was rescued, and for a long while, Ruffnut and Snotlout did not utter a word to her. Then one day, Stoick asked to see her privately, showing her both a letter proposing an alliance with the south and a report delivered by Snotlout implying that the warrior was betraying the Hooligans. Stoic gave her a choice, either deal with her treason and put her on trial or keep her as the commander responsible for ensuring a diplomatic encounter with the south; to make sure any rumors of betrayal were thrown away.
The choice was obvious. Her own friends believed her a liar, a traitor, they were hurt, and if a trial happened, she would end up exiled, or banished from the place she called home, and yet... As she read over the south's proposal for truce, there was the clause that would ensure no one thought that she was working with the dragon lover.
"The termination and imprisonment of the Night Fury and the rider known as Night Stutter."
She was short of breath, wanting to hurl her stomach out and feeling like a thousand tiny glass pieces were clattering and shattering in her mind. Stoick noticed the paralyzed woman, getting up and speaking with what almost felt like hatred, an air of disappointment, a look of disbelief.
"I don't know your relationship with that rider, but whatever it is, know that it will end once he is publicly executed."
He reached forward, putting a hand to her shoulder as he could no longer hold his affection back.
"Astrid... This village needs a leader, and you are all i have left. All we have left. We can't win a war with the south; they have weapons that we've never seen before... Exploding metal and inventions that we can't beat with arrows and axes."
He sat down on his council spot. Leaning back as he dismissed her. She clutched the letter, shoving it on her belt.
"... I won't fail."
"You better not."
The response was sent to the south, and today they would arrive. She took a deep breath in. All her issues seemed futile. Everything could be solved if she would just say it, the identity of the Night Stutter, the reason she was alive, the reason why she hadn't killed a dragon in weeks. Astrid still felt no sympathy towards the beasts, but killing them... She was scared that he would see. She could never tell when Hiccup was nearby, if he was still watching, if maybe he was waiting to come back, if she wouldn't have to do any of this, and out of the kindness of his heart, he would come out by himself.
 - I'm pathetic.
She whispered to herself, laying down and staring at the sky. The clear morning almost felt like the gods taunting her, showing that the world went on even with her world crumbling. The things she felt, the things that she was terrified to name, they took up everything inside. Every corner and curve. What was it? She hated him, hated him to the point it hurt to do so, because it didn't feel right. It didn't feel right to hate him, to call him enemy, that shy stupid boy from when she was a child was now a wild man with the same naive intentions and worldview he always had. He wasn't perfect, but he didn't claim to be. He wasn't always right, but he was so willing to admit his wrongs. In the end, what really bothered Astrid was how, there was no way, in any version of their meeting that she created in her mind, that he was the bad guy. Hiccup was not the evildoer, the threat to Berk, the problem of the arquipelago. He helped people, he didn't kill anyone that didn't deserve it, and he preached peace.
Peace.
A viking speaking of peace and tranquility was a crazy thought, but Hiccup was never like the other vikings anyway.
No, what really made her curl up, cry, shake and feel wrathful was the simple question that came with all this wondering. If he was not the bad guy, and he is her enemy, then what is Astrid?
Days and nights she spent remembering all the gruesome things she had done, all the people she had lost, and no normal viking would see those as bad things, but she felt weirdly evil for doing them. She blamed Hiccup. Even before she knew he was alive, she blamed the boy that died speaking of doing things a different way. With each kill, each dragon felled, she would hear that voice, in the back of her neck, whispering in fear.
"Am i doing the right thing?"
She got up, breathing heavy, she couldn't afford doubt. She stared onto the horizon, remembering all of Hiccup's stories of different lands, different people, all these things she would never get to experience, all because of how rotten her heart was. At the end of the day, that's what it always came down to. A heart like hers couldn't be saved, and whatever would happen, there was no turning back. At least that's what she believed.
At noon, they arrived. Led by a man named Johann, the dragon hunters of the south arrived. Intricate weapons and chains, boats bigger than Astrid had ever seen, harpoons coated with some sort of green liquid and always pointed at the sky. The man was cunning, she immediately could tell his sweet words towards Stoick were always hiding wicked intentions. His men looked as mean as they come, no expression or emotion as they observed Berk as if it was nothing but a piece of land. Behind Astrid were her friends, with newfound confidence, happy they would work with the south instead of against them, but the valkyrie was having none of it.
 - Ah! I assume this is your fearless commander! - He approached Astrid, extending a hand- I hear you have some exciting information about the Night Stutter.
Astrid stared at his palm, her characteristic frown deepening while she forced herself to shake his hand. Everything in the name of diplomacy.
 - He's stronger than you think. Your weapons wouldn't even touch him.
He let go of her hand, staring at her with a weird glint in his eye:
 - Ha! The way you say it, it almost sounds like a threat.
Stoick put an arm around his shoulders. Taking his attention:
 - Come, Johann. I will show you around the island. Afterall, today is Astrid's ascension to the title of thane! She needs to prepare. Fishlegs, Tuffnut, with me.
The two went to give the man his tour. Fishlegs already spouting about the history and legacy of Berk while Tuffnut spoke about the festivities and ale. Ruffnut scattered to do something else, but Snotlout stayed behind.
 - Hey, Astrid...
She turned to him, her frown softening.
 - What? Do you need anything?
Snotlout started to rub the back of his neck, embarrassed, ashamed.
 - I... We've been fighting together for years. You've saved my hide more times than i can count and... And i know that you don't like people going over your head.
 - Speak, Snotlout.
She didn't have time for his self-pity. There was already too much on her plate, this man's feelings did not need to be added to her load.
 - I'm just sorry, okay?! I'm sorry i doubted you, i'm sorry i thought you would ever betray Berk it's just...
He looked at her, waiting for her to interrupt him, but when she showed no signs that she would do so, he continued.
 - I've been your friend for very long, and not once have i seen you... Look at someone. For a moment i thought you were incapable of affection!... And then there was the island and... Astrid, your eyes were... So bright.
She punched him, he fell back, yelling as he held his cheek:
 - OUCH!! WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!
He looked at her and froze. Her face was unsure, scared, a realization that she didn't want to have been just forced by Snotlout.
 - Astrid?...
Tears started to fall from her eyes as she clutched her fists close to her chest. It had finally been too much.
Snotlout slowly approached her, his hands holding her shoulders as he kept a safe distance, mostly for his safety.
 - Astrid, are you okay?... What's wrong?
Astrid didn't cry. At least not in front of anyone. Snotlout stared at her, not knowing what to do or say.
A vase shattering made them flinch, Astrid suddenly gaining her composure back, and wiping away her tears. She pushed Snotlout back.
 - I'm fine.
He wanted to say something but knew that wasn't the best choice. Astrid started walking towards her cabin, but for a moment, she turned to Snotlout again.
 - ...The thing about friendship, Snotlout, is that, sometimes, it requires us to break some rules. Clearly, that wasn't something you were willing to do.
Astrid stared at the water basin; her reflection scared her. The woman in the water looked soft, weak, needy. She couldn't afford that, not if she wanted Berk to thrive. She grabbed her knife, the sharp blade gleaming against the light. Sharp cuts through her hair, the length decreasing once more, dark coal was smeared under her eyes, other tints and paints doing the ritualistic marks necessary for the ascension. She stared at the basin once more. She hated that face, but at least this one she was used to, it felt right, familiar.
She held her knife as she left the cabin. The pyre, the rumbling of the drums, the chants and the smell of ale. It was suffocating, but it felt intoxicating at the same time. As if the entirety of the party was moving inside her. She closed her eyes, feeling it all muddle together. Stoick pulled her near the council, putting her in front, her dazed eyes focusing as she put on her façade. The chief's voice boomed over everyone, the silence falling on his people as they paid attention to each word uttered.
 - When a warrior proves themselves, the gods show us that strength, wit and power come from the rage we allow ourselves to carry in the name of those lost. We put our lives in the battlefield, hoping that the axe that fell us will aid us into Valhalla. Today, we accept as thane our most prestigious fighter. Our valkyrie, who showed promise since the moment she was born. Swinging her axe around, showing her skills and mastery, she proved that the dragons are beasts with no heart, honor or mind. The Exterminator! The Savior of Berk! The Tamer of the Scorching Plague!
Her heart thumped inside her chest, straightening her back, she faked pride, her scowl growing as to intimidate anyone that would accuse her of anything other than happiness. She started counting the seconds, wondering how long she would have to stay here, looking at the faces of everyone she was lying to. Her people, her family, her clan. She closed her eyes, the noises growing louder. Stoick's voice broke through:
 - And! To show us her prowess, as our ancestors have done before us, the thane will fall a beast in front of our eyes!
Her eyes shot open. This was a tradition, but one they haven't done in years, and not like this, not in the middle of everyone. Many thanes had come, but none were asked this unless the arena was available. She turned to Stoick, oblivious of her despair, he gave her a warm smile. She looked down, staring at the knife she clutched so tight. The blade was no longer shining, only reflecting the space. The heat of the pyre was becoming too much, her breath got caught in her throat, her eyes felt heavy, her face felt numb. Then, as if to wake her to the situation, a pained melody that was quickly silenced.
There was the Death Song.
Surrounded in chains, covered with pins and metal. It seemed younger than most Death Songs. Johann laughed delighted:
 - Oh, it was such a privilege to have seen these beauties in their natural habitat. Did you know they encase their prey in amber?! Even eat other dragons the nasty things. This one is on me, by the way. To show our commitment to an alliance with the Hooligans! Go ahead, thane. Have at him!
Astrid shivered. Many of Johann's men held down the dragon, the beast trying desperately to flee. Desperate. She knew that feeling. Knew it a bit too well. A viking pushed her forward, she took it as a sign to start walking. Everyone yelled and cheered, begging for blood, for the death of this dragon. The warrior took careful steps forward, looking the creature dead in the eye. The dragon started looking back.
He stopped struggling.
The mounds of viking felt like walls of shadow, like a barrier stopping her from deviating from her fate. This fate.
She kneeled in front of the Death Song. The dragon's pupils grew, hope filling his face. His eyes then saw her still holding the knife, and suddenly, Astrid wondered if dragons would cry if they could. She looked around... and touched her forehead to the dragon's horn. People slowly stopped cheering. Stoic observed, with a certain annoyance and uncertainty. Doubt sprouted in his mind as he realized what was happening.
Slowly, the Death Song closed his eyes, accepting his fate. Astrid whispered rites, a prayer to help him reach Valhalla, the vikings were silently observing, their tone suddenly changing.
No longer was this the death of a beast, but the execution of a warrior.
 - Let the warriors here, in the hall come forth, Thine and mine, for the need is mighty, If haply the queen from death they may hold, Till her fearful thoughts with time shall fade.
The sound of flesh being cut, the sound of liquid spilling onto the floor. The dragon had stopped moving. Astrid slowly rose, hands and blade stained. She slowly turned, her eyes finding Johann, and then seeing Stoick, his face said everything she needed to hear. His anger was no longer turned to her, as he realized what he was about to accept. The Valkyrie cleaned her blade against her big gloves, staring at Johann with a fire in her eyes.
 - We are vikings. We are people of tradition and religion. We recognize the power and fight in our foes. We hunt these creatures, but they will always fight back, they will always give us battle and honor. What that man is proposing... It is not about our protection, it is not about our tradition, it is about money.
Johann looked around, noticing the sudden shift in emotion. He got up, slowly moving towards his group.
 - I... I have no clue what you are talking about! If dragons die, won't it help you?! So, what if we get some natural resources from them on the meantime! These creatures have no soul, no essence to walk into Valhalla or whatever idiotic beliefs you have!
Stoic took a step forward, his frame being enough to get Johann to run behind his people.
 - I was so blinded by the prospect of protection, of getting some sort of leverage over these creatures that i forgot who the dragon hunters were. Your efforts were what almost extinguished our sheep, what almost ruined all the forests and farming land throughout the arquipelago. We might be at war with these beasts, but every single Hooligan will die before denying them the right to fight. What happened here today did prove Astrid's capability of being Thane, it did show her how deserving she is of the title... And she proved so by showing me who you truly are.
Stoick stepped closer to him, two of his men tried to push the man back, only to get themselves throw out of the way without struggle. The chief looked down at an angry Johann:
 - Leave, you rat. There will be no peace with the south. If you want our lands, you will have to take it from us.
Johann scowled; it reminded Astrid of when her mom told her stories of gremlins who would get upset when they failed their trickery. The man snapped his fingers, his people taking the Death Song's body away as he retreated to his ship. His last words reverberated in the Valkyrie's mind:
 - We'll see where your alliance truly lies when your village burns, Thane.
Astrid put her hand on the tree, trying to find balance, puking from the nerves of everything that had happened. Her hands and clothes were still stained with blood. They invited her to stay, to enjoy the festivities, saying that it was her day, but all she could think about was the oncoming war. She walked to the forest, far from the music and drinks and people. She walked towards a small lake on this area, inside a crater. Climbing down, she stopped holding back the tears, taking off her gloves and her cotton shirt to wash, throwing the heavy armor to the side as the salty droplets fell down her cheeks.
 - Shit... Shit...
The blood refused to wash off. She knew how to wash blood off, but her brain was so confused she wished the gods would give her a miracle and save her the trouble. The warrior wanted to erase this from her mind.
A sound of branches breaking made her hold still. With a slow motion, she put her shirt back on. Astrid already knew who it was. Her voice came out weaker than she wanted it to be. Scared. Scared of what he would think of her after that:
 - ... How much did you see?
Quiet steps approached. She started wondering if it really was him, if it maybe was someone else, maybe one of Johann's men followed her, maybe it was Snotlout wanting to apologize once more.
Then his hand reached her shoulder. He kneeled behind her, his forehead resting against her neck. His voice was quiet and gentle.
 - ... I'm sorry.
His arms wrapped around her waist, fully hugging her as she weakly heaved.
 - You could have just come back... None of this would have happened if you came back...
 - I know... I'm sorry... I'm sorry...
They stayed there, waiting, enjoying this rare moment of respite, where they allowed each other to cry. The two unbreakable and immovable forces letting themselves be soft for one another. They felt it again, as if they were trapped in time, as if the rest of the world had gone away for a single second, just so they could feel that peace, that comfort they had been craving for so long.
Astrid had finally stopped crying. Feeling slightly embarrassed by her position, she shook him off. He cleared his throat and sat looking at some other spot, body fully turned away from her. Astrid was the first to break the silence:
 - We're at war with the south.
 - Yeah... I'm pretty sure i told you to not do that.
She chuckled. Noticing her amusement, she quickly changed her expression again. They might be civil now, but they were still enemies. She wondered if anyone else in the world had to constantly remind themselves that.
 - So, still not helping i assume?
Hiccup sighed, almost bored, as if the question was tedious.
 - I have been helping, and i will continue to do so, but that's not really the question you're asking, i assume.
The Valkyrie clicked her tongue annoyed. He knew her too well, and it was infuriating. She started splashing the lake. Hiccup spoke with a smile:
 - You know... This is the place where i tamed Toothless.
Astrid looked up, taking in the surroundings of her secret spot, but apparently not hers at all.
 - ... You told me about it... I wonder if maybe i didn't feel that this was your spot.
 - Feel? What do you mean?
She sighed, hugging her legs ashamed, but not feeling the urge to hide her feelings.
 - When you... Disappeared. I felt myself going to places you liked. It was... Cathartic. Sometimes it felt like... Like you were still here.
Hiccup turned towards her, moving a bit closer.
 - If it... makes you feel better... My heart always was. I-i mean, i know that won't change all the pain i caused you and... Everyone but... I never forgot you.
Astrid looked at him, a scoffing smile tugging at her lips:
 - Hah! That almost sounded like courting, Night Stutter.
 - I love you.
What? She laughed before processing the words. Turning away to throw some water at him, but he stayed unmoving. Serious. Her smile slowly disappeared. She started stuttering, as if her mind was no longer there. He repeated it:
 - I love you, Astrid Hofferson. Always have.
She moved back instinctively. He stayed still, observing her reaction, trying to decipher her expression.
And then, she kicked him in the chest.
 - OUCH!! That hurt!
She got up quickly, Toothless came from the darkness, rushing towards the rider to check on him and quickly realizing he was fine. Astrid screamed, frustrated:
 - How-- How DARE YOU!!
 - Wait, what?! What did i do wrong?!
Hiccup got up, catching his breath. Astrid started pacing:
 - I-- YOU-- WE AREN'T--! I HATE you!
Hiccup laughed humorless, scratching his head:
 - Well, that's a bit harsh.
 - No, no, you don't understand! We're enemies!! You can't... I won't... SHUT UP, HICCUP!!
She started marching away, going back to the village, hiding her beet red face.
 - Wait, Astrid! Just... Just wait a moment, did i do something wrong?! Why are you angry at me?!
She whipped to look at him, he stopped, noticing he fucked up.
 - You help dragons. I kill dragons. You have no responsibilities. I have a whole VILLAGE to take care of! You can't love me. You can't love me while going against everything i am! Everything i believe!
He scoffed, a bit annoyed:
 - Oh, really? Do dragon killers cry after murdering one of them? Do they second guess and give them their rites before sending them to Valhalla? I saw you waver, i saw you... I saw you talking to Snotlout about me. About the way you look at me; and although i don't appreciate him getting that close... He did help you realize what you feel about me.
Boiling anger. Astrid took a step closer, her whole demeanor shifting as Hiccup felt like he stepped on a trap. If there was one thing the woman didn't appreciate, was being stalked like deer.
 - And what, pray tell, is it that i feel for you?
He gulped as Toothless whimpered and took a step back, predicting what Hiccup was going to say.
 - Well, you... Love me too... Right?...
Astrid basically growled at Hiccup, turning back and walking with purpose towards the village. Hiccup sighed, shaking his head at his social interaction and looking at his buddy, who looked pained with cringe.
 - Oh, shut up. At least i'm trying. Where's your love interest?
And he started following Astrid.
 - Astrid, wait.
 - Go away!
 - I'm not going to follow you into the village. I'm not that stupid.
She stopped. Silence fell onto the forest. She felt herself shiver, wondering what she could do, what would it take to get him back, to get him to willingly show himself to everyone. His voice broke through:
 - ... Why didn't you... Why didn't you just let him go?... You clearly didn't want him to die, you saw his eyes, you saw how afraid he was.
She felt their bubble bursting, reality seeping into their relationship. Whatever softness she felt before, now gone as she noticed how mournful he was about the dragon. Not about their bond, not about abandoning his family, but about the beast dying.
 - Well, Hiccup...
Her words were lathered with venom, she both didn't want to say this and wanted to yell it out to everyone. She remembered every interaction they had, every moment of coziness, of insecurity, of embarrassment; she also remembered all the years she spent crying, looking for revenge, all the people she lost during Stoick's crusade against dragons. The Valkyrie turned around, her icy eyes piercing Hiccup's previous confidence, all his "sures" becoming "maybes" in seconds.
 - Sometimes people must die so you can prove a point.
She didn't need to spell it out for him. He could interpret it just fine.
"It's all your fault."
She went back to the village, knowing now that she was a hero, any insecurities or doubts gone from her mind. She did what she should have done, what was right, and just like that, all the regret disappeared. She looked at her knife, a bit of blood still attached to it, but it shined more than ever before.
The second crack of hatred was carved into her heart.

Hey!! I've been thinking about your httyd urban fantasy au lately and I was wondering if you could share a bit more? Like maybe about the dragon rider gang? Like Fishlegs or Astrid? Or a bit more about Snotlout and Hiccup's dynamic?
No pressure! But it's such a cool concept and this is a free pass to talk about it if you want to :D
Have a good day!!
Ahjkasg hi its rlly sweet u think abt my stupid little au !!!!
i talked about Astrid here. shes very familiar with dragons but very complacent in the exploitation of them. so she doesnt hate dragons but she doesnt love them, theyre just a means to an end for what she wants (recognition). her "romantic flight" equivalent in this au is learning that Stormly thinks of her like a friend instead of like how a pet thinks of an owner. shes the first to approach Hiccup about joining his ridiculous vigilante shit
Fishlegs and Astrid are actually friends before they meet Hiccup in this au!! Fishlegs family is in a similar situation to Astrid's; his mom deals in economic research of dragons and while Fishlegs has a different opinion on them (hes intimidated and thinks the amount of workplace injuries that occur with captive dragons isnt worth the economic gain they could hypothetically provide), he still doesnt quite reach the same respect or conclusion until Astrid and Hiccup show him Toothless and Stormfly. he doesnt approve of the vigilante stuff and will hang back and do "base operations" more than he goes out with them, but he becomes really passionate about it once they bring Meatlug back from a mission
Ruffnut and Tuffnut are completely blank slates as it comes to dragons. they kind of have the normal kid "holy fuck dragons are cool" idea but their daily life isn't involved with them at all. Ruffnut gets involved because Tuffnut shows interest in Hiccup's bullcrap once they find out about Toothless, and shes kind of like Fishlegs in the respect that shes more hesitant than someone might think, but she joins to support Tuffnut (who is really fascinated by the loser kid suddenly having a night fury). eventually they find Barf + Belch on a completely solo mission. Ruffnut had difficulty with Barf because he kind of represented "youre in this for good now" at first, while Tuffnut mainly does it for the feeling of freedom. i imagine their parents have really high expectations even though they are kind of absent and Tuffnut wants to escape that while Ruffnut is more practical
Snotlout and Hiccup are cousins and their dynamic is pretty well covered. he, Astrid, and the twins knew each other before Hiccup moved in with Snotlout. initially Snotlout thinks Hiccup is being fucking ridiculous and is afraid of getting into trouble with Spitelout, but once Astrid gets on board he starts being more willing to cooperate and then help. he and Hiccup have a brief rough patch where they're really mad at each other; Snotlout bonded with Hookfang while on a really simple rescue & release mission, which complicated it enough that they were caught by the authorities, and Hiccup got arrested (but not "found out" in the superhero sense which sounds stupid but yk what i mean. like on different charges, like trespassing or refusing to cooperate with police. which i mentioned earlier somewhere?). that leads to Stoick finding out about the vigilantism and them needing to hide Toothless for a while* and they fight with each other over that. it blows over but every once and a while Snotlout oscillates between feeling guilty and angry about it all
*(ive kinda decided that Toothless's capture was government-funded due to the threat night furies as a species pose. like watch httyd1 the potential that they have for destruction if weaponized is insane. and by releasing Toothless and befriending him, Hiccup has already done something highly illegal)
hope this satisfies ur brain ^-^

Genuine trip as well that he's not only having to give up his title, but also would be getting chosen over all the ladies present - so this gold dragon would have had to ignore all the ladies on the hatching ground, every other potential rider on the hatching ground, march up the stands, and pick him out of the crowd. Probably not just a crowd, but one of the special boxes for the VIPs (I believe I remember those were up higher in the stands...?)*
Ahhhh, I’m remembering a Event that happened in the books, where one of the eggs didn’t hatch and everyone was like, oh well, but a Lord Holder's young son was like wait wait no it’s alive I can hear it, and he jumps into the sand pit and breaks open the egg. It turns out to be a runty white dragon that can neither fight nor mate and so they were like, he can have the dragon and not live in the Weyr and still be a Lord because he was the last of the line or something? Lessa's half brother?
And I also recall there was a Thing in the books where there was no female green riders in the time period (it was forgotten history that there ever were) and during a hatching this little green dragon wouldn’t pick and started trying get away from the boys trying to claim her, and one of the workers named Mirrim tried to boss the boys to get closer to the baby who was then like, ah you! And starts trying to head butt it’s way out to get to her and she’s like?? oh no stop your going to hurt yourself and oops she has a dragon and she’s the first female green rider in like 400 years. And it was the same hatching I think? Very eventful day lol
Back to Marvel tho, the little queen dragon is like, no I want you Lord Stark. Either after a long, heartbreaking event where a queen is seemingly stillborn and then Tony hears it and runs up to help her, or this little lady is “running” amok and making demands and Tony ends up trying to help out and oops. Either way he’s going to get in trouble for “ruining tradition” or “unjustly claiming a queen” or something.
He’s definitely the one that rediscovers the Dragons can Time Travel tho. And he totally improves the flamethrowers to a point where it’s better then the actual fire breathing and that ruffles even more scales. Jan should be the first female rider in an age cus they are the small, quick ones and she’s a trail blazer. Maybe she was supposed to be one of the ones trying to claim the queen Tony got and she gets the green and Tony got the gold oops
Steve being all out of sorts in the future with his Weyr, made up the Howling Commandos I assume, hearing second hand about all the ways Tony’s fucked with how things “should” be and so he’s even more emblematic of all the changes Steve is learning to hate. Plus if he’s a Ults Steve he could be like way more bigoted about a male queen rider, but a MCU Steve would be a more general “I don’t like the way you are doing things Stark”, who would probably be all “ I also have complaints about how I am doing things but that’s a me problem”
https://www.tumblr.com/lightshadowverisimilitude/716799770062176256/re-pern-the-time-travel-thing-was-part-of-og
@eak1mouse and I were just discussing an alternate option being Tony and the Gold egg being kidnapped together (for reasons. Or separately and just ending up in the same place), and the dragon literally hatching in his arms as he's trying to run away with the egg. (*not right now, can't you wait 20 gd minutes are you KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?!?!) And he's just as shocked as anyone when he gets rescued and the dragon is like, "no thank you, I'm plenty fine with mine own companion."

It might be faulty assumptions but I always presumed that Laenor was Rhaenys favorite child. Not something she could say because how would that look the overlooked for a male heir woman favoring a son over a daughter?
You said Laenor is everything you could want in a son, but not for Corlys. Laena is everything Corlys wanted in a son, but didn't get. Laena is brash and brave and devoted, wild in the best of ways and fully aware of all their family is.
Laenor is sweet and kind, yes he's brave but in a different sort of way. He's not picking fights that he can't win, he's not trying to gain more, advance more, he's trying to hold to his place in life where it stands, even if sometimes he doesn't know where that is.
Rhaenys demurs a little at Laena's proposed marriage to Viserys, but outright worries over Laenor and seems to want to reject the engagement out of fear for her son.
Also it seems like she spent more one on one time with him, at least young, someone had to teach him how to be a dragon, how to fly.
Firstly, I just want to say that I don't think, on this subject at least, that there is such a thing as faulty assumptions. I don't really care to hear if you think Rhaenys and Corlys hated their children or didn't feel anything for them because I think that's untrue. But when looking at nuances within the relationships and especially considering such a thing as favourites... so long as you have good reasoning, then I may disagree with you but I'm not going to say you're wrong wholeheartedly or that you're being anything approaching stupid or foolish or one of those words. I'm not going to insult you or seek to offend, basically.
I hadn't really considered the optics of Rhaenys's position as a past claimant having any real impact on who her favourite child might be or what she'd say if she was asked. I think the danger on that has passed. I don't think it would be particularly read into. It's also worth saying that, whereas Laenor is the younger sibling in the book, Laena is the youngest in the show. So it wouldn't be anything alarming to anyone if she showed favouritism to her eldest child who just so happens to be son. It's not indicative of any opinion that daughters are inferior, especially without an inheritance actually involved.
An interview that I suggest watching, and one I rewatched for this ask, is THIS. At about 3 minutes in, Eve and Steve are asked about their preferences towards their children, though only, really, within the context of fulfilling the ambition of getting close to the Throne. That, for me, is pretty much gospel because that's how the actors themselves have played it and I think it comes across, even when, as they say in the interview, it's not really in the script.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. It's very sneaky stuff, with Eve coming to Steve's rescue a little bit. Certainly, I think we can say that, even just taking away the subject of "favourites", what they say on Laena being like Corlys and perhaps Laenor being like Rhaenys is true, just in terms of emotional connections. And Corlys's role as a patriarch is always going to be harsh on Laenor. It just is, whether there is love there or not or whatever the personalities are. He is the heir, he has expectations hat would have been true if he'd married a local gentrywoman or... in this case, the Crown Princess.
The only way that Laenor fails, as a son, is that he doesn't produce heirs. Everything else is pretty much spot on. He's a great warrior and someone who learns at the feet of his father. He's an experienced and dedicated swordsman. He's a dragon rider, which is epic. He's described multiple times as honourable, with a good heart. He's dutiful - aware of and willing to do his duty. I think Corlys would rather that than someone looking to pick fights.
I don't even think that Laenor being gay bothers Corlys so much. He'd rather it wasn't the truth, make no mistake, and he's harsh surrounding it and prefers to pretend it doesn't exist. But it doesn't seem to disgust him, Laenor never seems ashamed on Driftmark, he's still got Joffrey around etc. If Corlys wanted to put his foot down, I think he would. He does when that sexuality threatens the image of their house but we never see him pull Laenor to task on it. He just ignores it. Plus - the guy was a sailor. He's been to every corner of the world. I doubt homosexuality is the most shocking thing this guy has seen.
I suppose I never really thought of Corlys and Rhaenys instilling the same sense of ambition and drive in their children, or whether they look out for it. When you say Laenor is "not trying to gain more, advance more, he's trying to hold his place in life where it stands" - I don't know if we ever see specific disapproval from Corlys or Rhaenys surrounding that. They certainly don't display it but I think part of that reason is because they don't hold the slight to their mother in the way that Corlys and Rhaenys do. They didn't raise Laena to seek an advantageous match or to be disappointed that she wasn't Queen or even to want to be Queen. They didn't raise Laenor to want his blood on the Throne or to do everything he could to ensure that. Those ambitions seem very, very personal to Corlys and Rhaenys as a couple... if that makes sense?
As to your point about Laena's proposed match to Viserys against her reaction to Laenor... for that I would say yes but... the advantage we have with Laenor's match is that we have a private scene with Corlys. That is the only time she speaks without a mask up and she speaks freely and truthfully about her feelings. We don't have a private scene of Corlys and Rhaenys where they discuss a match between Laena and Viserys. So there's every reason to think that she could have expressed a similar level of worry.
As for one-on-one time, actually, I think Rhaenys probably spent more time with Laena overall. If you add it all together. They'd be bound together because of their gender and the activities that come with that. But also, more specifically, because Laenor was away at war for three years. He was in the Stepstone. So, whilst there's going to be some one-on-one time with dragons, that's still a big chunk of time where she didn't see her son but would still be raising Laena. She would have participated more in Laena's childhood than Laenor's. Though, it could be, again due to roles and whatnot, that Laenor also ended up spending more time with his mother than with his father overall. Who knows.

Random Thoughts on HTTYD RoB S1 (Ep1-6)
Ep1 - Ahhh, the animation is so olddd
They all look so weird, Hiccup is smaller than everyone else, Astrid's hair is l spaghetti, Snotlout's all dressed in grey, Tuff's hair is straight, Ruff's face is round and the voice is different, and Fishlegs looks like a soft marshmallow instead of the giant mountain he turns into in rtte - so so weird
Hiccup, the show-off and Toothless, the one actually doing everything
Hookfang chomped on Snotlout hard
"Every night, Meatlug would lick my feet. Who's gonna do that now??" "I volunteer Tuffnut" "Whatever... What time should I be there?" glad to know Tuff hasn't changed that much
Meatlug throwing herself at Fishlegs and Hookfang picking Snotlout up by his shirt even before Snotlout gets to hug him - dragon/rider moments give me liiiife~~
Hiccup drew a picture of them all?? That's so adorable!
Ep2- Is Hiccup going to narrate the beggining and ending of every ep? I kinda like it
I'm gonna take a guess and assume the whole "Hookfang turning on Snotlout/setting him on fire/chomping on him" is gonna be a regular gag
I have a soft spot for Gobber so this is making me super sad... Gonna try to find some fanfiction where there's some Gobber appreciation later, the man deserves it
Also, Mildew, you're already extremely hateful, thanks
"Is that another crack about my weight?" Stoick being self conscious about his weight just makes him that much more humane to me. Am I the only one?
Jeez Stoick, way to leave your son hanging
Oh yeah, the others don't have saddles yet, damn
Yeah, something does seem to be up with Hookfang
"That's what the chief does, he delegates." Okay, I'm sorry but that just sounds so much like an excuse
Check his teeth, peeps, there's something in his mouth, or he's got a broken tooth probably
They wanna kill Hookfang??? What is wrong with you people??
Aw, it was cute until Snotlout ruined it
Ep3- Way to start the episode; some near death expiriences, some rescuing, and some Hiccstrid crumbs
Gothi's great, I like her
Their protective instincts? Why is that surprising? Toothless did the exact same thing in Httyd1, it was a whole thing; Hiccup lost a leg, dragon of gigantic proportions was killed, feud that lasted hundreds of years was resolved, all that jazz. Why are you so surprised now
Of course the farm animals would be scared, can't blame them there
Astrid being competent and everyone else being useless, as usual
Toothless is such a good boy, saving the sheep
Man, I feel for Stoick and Gobber, they got a handful of kids to protect and no way to do so
And now they're huddling for warmth, ahhh, how fluffy is that
I know it's supposed to be an emocional moment, but the scene with the sheep and chicken and yaks getting closer to the fire is just so funny. The mighty score that accompanies it just makes it that much better
Watch the scene with no context and you'll see what I mean
Ep4- Hiccup could've just pulled Fishlegs from the other side, but okay sure
"It scared us, okay? Is that not good enough for you??" Jeez, Fishlegs was mad
Huh, cute little thing that dragon is - he's probably poisonous or super dangerous or something
Oh no, he's just a little guy with an angry, overprotective mama. That's good to know
Snotlout's habit of naming every single thing he sees is something that already comes from RoB I see
I find it cute that Hiccup went to Gobber for advice
If I were Toothless, I'd feel wronged. Hiccup chose to keep a dragon he doesn't even know in his home over his best bud. That was a bad move Hiccup
Wow, that mama is huuuge, her wings are bigger than Toothless himself
All's well that ends well I suppose, but yeah, Toothless deserves a good apology and his weight in fish for this
Ep5- Fishlegs has a good point
"Should we tell Hookfang something?" "Eh, let me sleep on it." Pffft, the twins want to see Snotlour dead so bad, that's also something that came from RoB apparently
"Hey! Things happen after dark." Again, Fishlegs has a point
"It's not supposed to be fun, it's a Hiccup idea" Ouch Astrid, that hurt
Hoofang has been causing so much trouble, and I'm like, 5 episodes into this
"My three weddings, their three funerals... Oh, the funerals~~" what. the. fuck. Mildew. Isn't this kind of implying he killed his wives??
"I gave up thinking years ago. Never been happier." That's such a Tuff thing to say
Mildew is definitely the responsible here, Im already calling it out
Mildew is such a freaking psycho
Ep6- "-our chances of finding those feet are as good as Snotlout and Astrid-" "Don't go there." Okay, that was really good. Fishlegs deserves a brownie
Yeah, Alvin is an ally in RttE so I'm not getting a lot of fear from this unfortunately. Curious to see where it will go though
Fishlegs was making Meatlug a poem?? That's so freaking sweet
Also, he's such a marshmallow in this design my god, I just wanna hug him
And Bucket, such a sweetheart, he went all the way back just to get the girl's lamb
"Alvin? What'd he do to earn that?" Tuff, I appreciate you
Hiccup is such a sassy little shit to his enemies, I love every single second of it
Astrid has suffered a nice plethora of injuries this episode, someone please check on her
A little annoyed Mildew didn't get his deserved karma but okay, we'll get there
Since I don't wanna cover 10 episodes in just one post, I'll just stop this one here, and cover another handful of them next time
My conclusions until now are: Mildew is freaking creep and in just a couple episodes he was able to climb up there right next to Spitelout in terms of "I dont wanna see him ever". And speaking of Spitelout, he hasn't appeared yet, yayyy :DDD
The humor isn't as good I'd wager, or at least very different. The twins speak like, two small lines every episode, if at all, and they haven't shown nearly as much charm as they did in RttE, but who knows, maybe they'll grow into their role, it's what im guessing. Same thing for Snotlout
Hiccup also seems so much lighter, and less tired and I honestly love it, because it's proof his growing is done well moving forward. He's still a sassy little shit to his enemies though, and I gain years of life every time he calls them out on their dumbness
For now that's all - moving on!!

XOXOX
Just a mere few months after defeating the Red Death for Berk, the Dragon Master and his Night Fury already needed the Dragon’s Riders to honor the deal that was made.
A new faction has shown its ugly face in the Barbaric Archipelago. Hiccup’s dragons have been disappearing, someone is stealing them for nefarious reasons.
It took some figuring out, but eventually, he and Toothless found out about the Hunters and engaged them in combat. Dagur was amongst them and he is still very, very salty about Berk’s alliance with dragons.
It was, after all, dragons who stole Berk’s heir and she’s still missing. Their fathers had almost arranged a marriage between them to strengthen the alliance between the Hooligans and the Berserkers in the face of the Dragon Scourge. Dagur had been very fond of the idea.
This wasn’t Hiccup’s only encounter with Dagur, who blames him for her disappearance, and he was very helpful to Ryker in taking him down.
Fortunately, unlike last time, he wasn’t alone.
Hiccup’s wrists are tied behind his back, Ryker has forced him to sit on a chair in the middle of this otherwise empty room. Besides the three of them and the chair, there’s only a chest and he’s suspicious of what might be in it.
He tests his restraints. They’re tight, the rope digging into his skin. They don’t leave much room to fight the two men before him. Ryker’s face is quite unreadable, but Dagur’s spews an entire rant of hateful words. He holds a knife, thumb rubbing across the sharp side of the blade.
“So,” the latter starts in a hiss. “Are you ready to talk?”
“That depends on what you’re about to say next,” Hiccup responds. Anxiety makes his heart race, but so far, he manages to keep a brave face. His wrists pull at their bonds.
“It’s not about what we have to say, it’s about what you have to say,” Dagur remarks. The blade cuts his thumb, but he doesn’t appear to notice.
“Like what you have to say about the location of the Dragon Eye,” finally, Ryker breaks his silence. Hiccup’s eyes narrow. Why do they think he would know anything about that?
“Tell us what you know. Quick.”
The ship rocks from a blast to its side. Hiccup, Ryker, and Dagur are all thrown to the floor, the first of the three still restrained. Though at least he loses the chair.
“No! Not this time!” A deranged scream leaves Dagur, a fist slamming on the ground. He was so close to finding out what this monster had done to his beloved.
Every single time the Dragon Master slips out of his grasp.
“I told you,” Hiccup states, face down on the ship’s floor. “I’m not alone anymore.”
The Gods know how much he and Toothless struggled, despite having countless dragons on their side.
Ryker snarls before he rises and rushes out of the room. This will be his introduction to the Dragon Riders and what an unpleasant surprise it will be for him.
Another blast rings out, but not to their ship. The sounds of battle wage above them.
Instead of following Ryker out, Dagur grabs Hiccup by his tunic, his armor already gone. They were about to interrogate him when his unexpected rescue party came from the skies.
“I’m not leaving here empty handed. You will tell me what happened to her!” he yells in his face. She vanishes and suddenly there’s this dragon conqueror about? That can’t be a coincidence.
“Nothing happ-” Hiccup is cut off when a forehead strikes him in the nose. His answer isn’t a new one, which is why Dagur won’t let him finish. He can’t fight back, his hands are tied behind his back.
“Tell me!”
“No!”
Another blast hits their ship, throwing them again.
“These stupid… You and I are not done yet! Stay here!” Dagur orders him before he leaves, choosing to take care of their Dragon Rider problem before he can get back to interrogating him in peace.
And also choosing to lock the door behind him.
Despite this, Hiccup breathes a sigh of relief. He can handle some rope and a locked door. It takes some struggling, but he’s flexible enough to get his roped hands in front of him again. It’s his first win of the day.
Until the next blast creates a hole in the ship right next to him, throwing him to the other side of the room. He hits it with force. Black dots his vision as unconsciousness wants to creep in, his body aches, and his ears ring.
Salty sea water floods into the room.
“Oh Gods,” he moans in pain, balled fists on his forehead.
The ship creaks dangerously and debris from the layer above him falls through the floor right on top of him. The air is knocked out of his lungs, his weak knee as well as a couple of ribs crack under the weight. It takes him much too long to find the ability to breathe again and when it does, it comes with a whole new wave of hurt. And he can barely get more than an ounce of air in his lungs. It feels like he’s slowly being suffocated.
He grunts, trying to move any of the debris off him, but not even the smaller pieces will move. It doesn’t help that he has barely any strength. The crushing feeling in his ribs and lungs isn’t just slowly stealing his life away, but his strength as well.
“Tooth… Toothless!” Wheezes leave him, but he can barely hear himself. “Bud!”
He tries again, still nothing. His lungs feel like they’re about to burst, the black spots in his vision return.
And then his hair feels wet. The ship is slanting as it takes on water, the room is quickly filling up and the sea is reaching for him.
“No… No…” In a wheezy panic, he tries once again to get free, but his energy is sapped quickly. He turns his head away from the flood, desperately gasping for air unattainable for him.
“Tooth… less!” If his heart beats any faster, it may cease to beat at all. He can feel both it and his lungs fight against his broken ribs and the weight on top of it all.
He’s barely breaching the surface at that point. The next gasp for air is met with a gulp of water, coughing it out does nothing but make him inhale more. His lungs burn. A last ditch attempt at freeing himself from this crushing weight on top of him does nothing.
The reality that he may very well die crashes onto him like a wild wave and his every instinct screams at him to preserve his life, but he’s trapped and completely helpless.
The room continues to fill up.
The locked door is blasted open.
As his vision darkens, Hiccup barely sees the hands reaching for him.
-XOXOX-
Hiccup claws himself back out of the depths of unconsciousness and finds that he can breathe. That he can breathe, that he is wet, freezing cold, and in terrible, terrible pain.
“Oh, I think he’s waking up!” Fishlegs’ voice vaguely registers in his brain. He’s the one holding him in their arms as they make their escape from the Hunter ships. They’ve found Hiccup, Toothless, and the dragons that were held captive down below. The battle itself was chaotic and violent, but somehow they managed to escape with all of their lives intact.
“How is he? Hiccup?!” From on top of Toothless’ back, Astrid tries to catch a glimpse of him. Snotlout and Hookfang try to do the same thing on Meatlug’s other side.
Hiccup’s eyes flutter open and closed, he’s not all there yet. Looking down at their friend, Fishlegs carefully adjusts his grip. Hiccup is still wheezing dangerously in his arms. They managed to pull him out of the water just in time- he was sputtering and coughing violently, vomiting on the way out- but it was obvious that he had been very close to drowning and they might still lose him because of it.
They urgently needed to get him back to Dragon’s Edge, his base of operations. It’s closer than Berk and will give them a chance to take a look at him properly. The heat of battle doesn’t give such luxuries.
“Hey Fishface, didn’t Astrid ask you a question?!” Snotlout shouts at him.
“He’s in a bad state, Astrid. A really bad state,” Fishlegs finally responds. Nevermind the near-drowning, they haven’t even the faintest idea of what his other injuries might be.
The dragons beneath them tense up, Meatlug whines sadly. Toothless does a good job of keeping a levelhead, but Astrid swears she can see the panic in his eyes.
“He’ll make it,” Astrid states, placing a comforting hand on the Night Fury’s head. Just months ago, he survived a battle with the biggest dragon in Berkian history and then the loss of a leg. This won’t kill him either.
Fishlegs looks back down at Hiccup, who’s once again knocked out cold in his arms. He hopes desperately that she’s right. They all do.
-XOXOX-
On Dragon’s Edge, Hiccup outright refused treatment of any kind.
It made for a startling twist of events, but in an effort to keep him from hurting himself trying to stay out of their reach, they respect his wishes.
“This is so stupid!” Snotlout hisses. “He could die without help!”
He had voted to just forgo Hiccup’s autonomy if it meant saving his life, but Astrid and Fishlegs disagreed.
“And he could die trying to fight us, our hands are tied, Snotlout,” Astrid hisses back. Any of those ribs could move out of place and puncture a lung.
All the Dragon Riders are forced to stand outside of their leader’s hut and hope that he changes his mind soon. Fishlegs is especially nervous. Hiccup had practically struggled out of his grip the second he was conscious enough to do it. He hates not being able to help him, he knows how unstable Hiccup’s condition is right now. Any second now, it could get even worse.
Inside the hut, Hiccup suffers as he tries to take care of his injuries himself.
His left knee didn’t break, but it did dislocate. And though it somehow got reset at the same time, it is still awfully swollen and completely useless. He can’t move around to find his medical supplies, Toothless has to grab them for him. Luckily, he doesn’t have to go very far.
In the meantime, Hiccup tries to remove his tunic while flat on his floor. If he wants to take a look at his wounds, he needs a better look at himself, which he can only do if he undresses. Which he can’t do. His ribs scream from the act of breathing, let alone from trying to get out of his tunic.
“Toothless… knife,” he wheezes and then suppresses a cough, a battle that he loses. He moans in pain and Toothless whimpers, licking his cheek. It’s agony for him to see his Rider in so much pain. He has never been this injured before.
“Can’t cry… can’t cry.” If he starts sobbing now, he won’t only be unable to stop, but it’ll be a nightmare on his aching body.
Toothless hands him a knife with his gums, which he takes. He brings the blade painstakingly to the bottom of his tunic, planning on cutting through the seams in an effort to make his tunic easier to move.
He tries to get through the first few stitches.
Then he tries again.
And again.
The strength needed is just too much.
Dropping the knife, Hiccup has been stripped of energy he didn’t even have in the first place. Toothless whines in distress, he can almost feel the pain he’s in.
He heads over to the door, planning on getting the other humans to help.
“Willow… bark,” Hiccup wheezes. Maybe if he has a nice tea made of willow bark, the pain will numb enough to allow him to treat himself.
Toothless purrs, then licks his forehead in reassurance before he pads over to the door, pulling on the lever to let the others in. Just as he hoped, the Berkian humans are still waiting on the other side. Their heads turn to him immediately and then look past him to see Hiccup lying on the floor, struggling to breathe properly.
They need no invitation to hurry inside. Fishlegs and Astrid are the first to drop to their knees at either side of him.
“No,” he wheezes. “I’m… fine.”
“No, you’re not,” Astrid argues softly and gently rolls him onto his back. It hurts him, but it needs to be done.
Next she grabs the hem of his tunic, wanting to pull it up to look at his chest, but he stops her by taking her hands. “No one… looks.”
“Look, we really don’t care that you’re scrawny,” Snotlout states.
“I don’t care… what you… think…” what my problem is,’ but he doesn’t get to say that. “No… looks… touch.”
“Hiccup, you’re killing yourself!” Fishlegs exclaims.
Toothless whines again, nuzzling his forehead. Apart from when Hiccup was about to lose his leg, they’ve never seen him like this.
“Willow,” is the single word he manages past his lips. He doesn’t need their help in treating his injuries, just in making it possible for him to treat himself.
“You know… it might not work?” Astrid says. “Are you really risking everything on the slight chance that willow bark infused tea will help numb your pain enough to help yourself?”
There’s trouble in his expression as he thinks it over, but he gives her no response.
Astrid is immediately frustrated. She wants to help, they all want to help. Hiccup has done more for Berk than they can ever repay and he won’t even let them take care of him when even his dragons are helpless.
The four of them stand outside the hut, desperate for their original trainer to make it.
Hiccup must be looking at their faces as well, because suddenly, and slowly, the hem of his tunic inches upwards. His hands are on his pectorals, where his tunic bunches up. He won’t go any further.
Deciding to tread lightly, Fishlegs gets to work.

All Hail King Julien is a prequel to the Madagascar movies (and actually has an overarching plot and lore), but aside from that:
Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, while amusing, isn't really all that serialized. There's continuity, but it's not canon to the movies. Not since Kung Fu Panda 3 directly contradicted it.
Penguins of Madagascar was never in continuity with the series. Trying to find a way to fit it into the timeline while make your brain melt.
We don't talk about Spirit's Netflix series. It is an In Name Only take on the original movie, and is antithetical to the themes of said original film. (It's a horse girl series where the protag tames Spirit.)
The Monsters vs Aliens series is just... No...
I don't know about any other Dreamworks animated shows, but yeah.
Yeah idk Dreakworks series based on movies tend to be... eughhhh? Except, of course, the Dragons shows (Race to the Edge is genuinely fantastic) but even then, I've heard (but refuse to watch) about Rescue Riders, which is a baby spinoff set in modern times (no, just fucking no) and also The Nine Realms, which is also set in modern times and based on what I've heard about it, seems to outright hate the original movies based on some of the creative decisions made in it... :|
As for other shows, I think there's also a Boss Baby show and a Croods show? I ain't touching either of those with a ten foot pole tho. It's bad enough I gotta watch those movies to begin with.
