On Halsey and her possible single this Friday
I’ve been thinking about how to write this post for a few days now and I think I got it:
If you’ve ever met me and my roommate two thoughts have probably crossed your mind:
1- Wow. Are these girls dating?
No, we’re not dating. We are just great friends. Yes, people combine our names into one name (Maisy); no we can’t go anywhere without the other; yes our professors consider us a package deal; yes, we eat dinner at our fridge since we have separate rooms this year (we’re still in the dorms otherwise we would eat at a table, we’re not animals for goodness sake, but if we were we would be bears); yes, we probably intimidate guys away from each other; yes, we’ve gone out of the country together three times; yes, we have been through some serious shit together (and I’m talking nasty, horrible, crippling, “my life will never be the same” shit). But that doesn’t mean we are dating. I know. It is crazy that you can be friends with someone without wanting to bone. Platonic love, anyone?
2- Wow. These girls are a little obsessed with Halsey.
Yes, we are, thanking you for recognizing that. We are hardcore Halsey fans, We bonded over her music and the fact that she sings about real shit that most people ignore or don’t talk about or don’t even recognize. I traveled over 3 state lines so we could see Halsey live (with the rest of our friend group). We have regular “Halsey listening” parties (which are what they sound like: we get together, listen to all of Halsey’s pieces, and talk about why every song is our favorite song). I can’t even explain our attachment to Halsey in words. If you’ve listened to her music you understand.
So, when we saw on March 7, 2017 that Halsey announced the title of her new album, “hopeless fountain kingdom,” and that the album would be dropping in June, we had a screaming episode. (We do this quite often and is probably why our neighbors hate us, it’s fine.) After screaming, hyperventilating, murmuring “ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh” repeatedly, and pacing, we started spiraling into conspiracy theories. The leap to conspiracies wasn’t that big of a leap since Halsey had held a secret, limited preview of her new album in London, had posted multiple pics on Insta and Facebook with quotes from Romeo and Juliet, which had been influential for her upcoming album, and admitted to being up to something earlier that day.
We started to see all of the connections between Halsey’s hinting posts and her announcement of her upcoming album. Maybe the three bees in the drawing by ine8s (Instagram) represented the three part title? Maybe the writing in the journal (317-7BD-LNDS) that can be seen in the Colors Music Video was a phone number that you could call (spoiler alert: it’s for a car service in Indiana). Maybe the writing actually represented announcement date (month, year, day). Maybe it means something else, but we are convinced it is the announcement date.
Then there’s the napkin that Halsey writes the address on in the music video. If you repeatedly enhance the pic of the napkin, you can make out the address: 17 Fountain Dr. The obvious meaning of this is the number of tracks the hopeless fountain kingdom will feature: 17. She has known this whole time people. She’s had this whole thing planned out since the start.
But if you are super super super super hopeful, you might be able to convince yourself that this means Halsey will drop a single on March 17, 2017. Tomorrow. (Daisy and I might have convinced ourselves of this at one point, but can you blame us?) This still might be true, but get your hopes up at your own risk. Halsey posted a photo on Insta yesterday (March 15) with the caption “hopeless.” This is the first part of her album’s title, and there are 3 parts. So, let’s do the math: hopeless (March 15), fountain (March 16), kingdom (March 17). Possible single? You tell me.
