Series I Still Love: Royal Spyness
The latest book in Rhys Bowen’s Royal Spyness series came out this week so I’m taking the opportunity to have another little chat about how much I love this series. It’s the 1930s and our heroine is Georgiana, a cousin of the king and granddaughter of Queen Victoria (just go with it and don’t think too hard about that bit) who is trying to build herself a niche in a changing world and runs…

i just think if ferrari and rbr gave their drivers stickers and made it a competition to see who can get more stickers on the enemy they would get phenomenal pr material. the ferrari boys are so competitive with each other they’d be going to extremes to hunt down the rbr boys and get more stickers on them/their stuff. checo would do his happy to be included smile as he stuck a single sticker on one of the cars and called it a day and it would be mildly charming. and don’t get me started on the unhinged chaos of unleashing max and charles on one another in a barely controlled competitive environment

Inter-generational questions...
One of my pals just asked "do Gen Z worry about the Bermuda Triangle and quicksand as much as we (Millennials) did?" and I'm going to say no I think? Although maybe it depends whereabouts in Gen Z you are because as a lot of my generation do, I think my pal is forgetting the oldest among Gen Z are now staring down 30 so their childhood wasn't THAT much different from ours!
I feel like GPS and smartphones basically killed off the Bermuda Triangle but I'm guessing that, exactly the same as us, Gen Z went through that "the floor is lava" phase as kids, which is sort of connected to the quicksand thing. At least it was for me!
You know what I do miss though? Not having the Internet in my pocket 24/7. It was great being able to leave my house on my bike in August when I was 13 and nobody but my friends knew where the hell I was until I rocked up at 6pm for my evening meal. (This is reminding me of a Real Ghostbusters episode where it wasn't a triangle but a parallelogram...I think? Anyway, me being able to remember that probably dates me. Though I was watching repeats/reruns in the 90s and not the original broadcast.)

Book of the Week: The Socialite Spy
As I said yesterday, although I should have been reading Christmas books and books that ticked off missing states in my reading challenge, actually last week I was reading a bunch of other stuff, so today’s pick is Sarah Sigal’s The Socialite Spy. It’s 1936 and Lady Pamela Moore is somewhat unconventional socialite – she’s married but she’s the writer of a newspaper column called Agent of…

Sulfur and smoke choked his own lungs. The stench of death lingered, the voices of many going silent in an instant-- all life, eradicated immediately... as if there was no trace of Earth at all. The shard of humanity that had once been cast aside, after ten thousand years, finally willed himself with enough strength to return. The very destruction of Terra had called to him.
He knew what happened here, what caused it.
" ... I do not know how I gained the strength. " The Emperor spoke, for once losing any vigilance in his voice-- it quivered, threatening to crack at any moment, every word being on the cusp of a sob.
" And I do not know why I chose to come here... but perhaps it is to reunite with you, and let you have your humanity back now that you stand again. "
It was hard to tell what was truly in the tone of this shard of the Emperor. Enraged, exhausted, undoubtedly upset-- those would be mere understatements. He drifted closer, weaving his way through the destruction and rubble of Terra-- no... no, a part of him refused to simply call it by such. Of Earth. His gaze settled upon his form, upon the scars upon his soul. The Emperor's Humanity mirrored it-- the many scars that now covered the Emperor covered himself as well. After all... they both held a connection to Earth.
Just because he was cast away to the depths to be able to defeat Horus did not mean he was without feelings of his own.
" You have been reborn in the ashes of Terra, " pointed out the fellow fracture, " and the Imperium crumbled with it. We both expected it would end this way. Our allies, dead. The world, on fire. And us... alone. "
" And yet... I cannot stand by while you suffer. "
It was then the Emperor approached the other, holding out his arms and suddenly bringing the other aspect into them. He was held, hidden away from the carnage that was wrought. The shard had tilted Kusig's head, letting it press into his shoulder, shielding him from the death that surrounded them.

" ... do not hold back your emotions. You are not the Emperor. You are but a man... allow yourself this, please. "
