I'll Have the Special - Katie McCabe

Y/N felt her body heating up as she heard everyone placing their order to the waiter. She tried to tune them out, re-reading the menu options again, then jumping back to the start when she would catch what someone else said.

“Oh umm, just the special,” she offered the teen a smile, handing him the menu when she was nudged for her turn to order.

The teen seemed overwhelmed with the large group and scribbled her order down without looking up.

Y/N sunk into her seat when he walked away, and conversation resumed. The anxiety of racing to read the menu and not hold up the group slowly seeping away. She took a couple sips of her drink to settle her nerves before joining the conversation again.

Her stress quickly spiked when her plate was set in front of her. Two large, battered fish filets sat on a pile of French fries. Being allergic to fish, there wasn’t anything she could eat off the plate. Having been so stressed about attempting to read the menu, she hadn’t actually listened to what the special was that night. Ordering the special had been a panic response when the menu kept getting jumbled in the noise of the restaurant.

“Oi! Switch with me!” Katie quickly reached across, trading plates before Y/N had a chance to say anything. Y/N sighed in relief when she saw food in front of her that she could eat.

Katie gave her subtle wink before stabbing her fork into the fish, helping cool it off quicker to eat.

“You didn’t have to switch meals with me,” Y/N mumbled while the team walked back to their hotel after supper.

“You didn’t seem happy with what you got, and I’m not a picky eater, no biggie,” Katie shrugged her shoulders.

“I’m allergic to fish,” Y/N muttered out, embarrassed that she ordered something she wouldn’t have been able to eat.

Katie paused her step for a second when she heard what Y/N said, “why’d you order the special then?”

Y/N flushed and refused to look up, continuing to walk a couple steps, Katie quick to take a few large strides to catch up, “I wasn’t listening when he said what it was, and I wasn’t ready to order, so I just panicked and said the special.”

“The team would have waited for you to decide,” Katie furrowed her brow, the team was always patient, some nights it took forever to place orders, much to the frustration of many staff having to make multiple trips to take orders.

Y/N hesitated her steps now, glancing around to see how far they were from some other groups of people having separated during the walk, “it wasn’t about being indecisive,” she huffed and dropped her chin to her chest, “I couldn’t read the menu. It was too loud to read in there.”

“Too loud to read? That’s the dumbest thing ever,” Steph push her way between the pair, not stopping as Katie told her off.

Looking back at Y/N, Katie could see her jaw set as her cheeks flushed pink, eyes focused on the ground as she shuffled to follow the group again. Katie caught the fabric of her coat, pulling her back to a stop. Glancing around, she realized they were at the back of their pack of players, “what do you mean it was ‘too loud to read’?”

“Nothing, it’s dumb, like Steph said,” Y/N shook her head and tried to pull away.

Katie tightened her grip, “it’s not dumb. Especially if it means you end up ordering something you’re allergicto.”

Y/N kicked her toe into the pavement, watching as a stone bounced off the edge of the sidewalk, “you know how you turn the radio down in the car when you’re looking for an address?”

Katie nodded along, “it’s like that, but I can’t turn down the world. Normally, if I take my time and really focus on just the menu, I can manage it. I’m just tired from the game, so the restaurant seemed extra loud, and people kept talking to me, I couldn’t do a good job to focus on reading.”

“You’re dyslexic!” Katie caught on quick to what Y/N was saying, quickly mumbling an apology when she realized how loudly she spoke.

Y/N nodded, “I’ve gotten pretty good at covering. I try and order last or look the menu up ahead of time, usually both. Most places have pretty good specials, so I just get that if I can’t.”

“You never actually get what you want, do you?” Katie frowned.

Y/N shrugged it off, “it’s usually fine. Tonight was kind of the exception I guess.”

They started walking again, keeping the pace slow, uninterested in catching the group.

“What about during film and meetings and such?”

“Jonas gives me a printout with his notes so I can follow along easier. And I try and sit in the back of the room, I can follow better if I can say what I’m reading. But listening I’m alright.”

“What else can I do to help?”

“You don’t have to do anything,” Y/N shook her head, not wanting anyone’s pity.

Katie sighed, pushing the button for the elevator, she wanted to help, but she wasn’t going to push the girl when she seemed uncomfortable as it was, “alright, but if there is ever anything I can do. Or if Catley, or anyone, says something dumb or bugs you about this. You tell me.”

Katie fixed her with a hard stare, showing how serious she was being.

The next team meeting the defender watched as Y/N settled in the back of the room with a few extra papers. She kept glancing over to make sure Y/N wasn’t struggling to follow along, readying herself to jump in to help if needed. Each time, she would see Y/N’s lips moving as she quietly whispered the words Jonas had on his screen or watch Y/N’s finger slowly move along her page.

Over the next couple days, Katie watched Y/N. She didn’t know much about dyslexia, so she didn’t know if there was anything she could help Y/N with, but she wanted to make sure she would at least be aware and help avoid putting Y/N in any more situations like the restaurant. Katie knew there wasn’t much she could do to help, and Y/N seemed to be fine on her own, even noticing the small things she did that seemed to help. She would place one ear bud in during breaks to have her phone read messages to her, ducking off to the side to use voice to text to respond.

Katie felt a little bit of guilt settle in her gut when she thought of all the times the team had gone out for dinner or coffee and Y/N felt rushed to order something she didn’t want because she felt to embarred to admit her struggle. She had seen the panic on Y/N’s face while they went for coffee after training, and someone suggested a new place. Y/N had been participating happily with the group, but dropped back and grew quiet as she put her ear bud in, attempting to search the café’s menu while keeping up with the group.

Y/N kept to the back of the group as they entered, scanning over the large chalkboard, lips moving while mouthed the words slowly to herself. Katie quickly skimmed the menu, recognizing they had gone to an unnecessarily witty café, all the names of the drinks long, poorly executed puns, forcing you to read the description. Looking beside her, she could see Y/N quickly growing frustrated with herself. The bright, multi coloured chalk and overly designed boards creating chaos in her brain as she tried to decipher any of the drink names, none of the words coming together for her pretend to make an order.

One by one the girls each order and moved to the side, waiting for their names to be called. Leaving Katie and Y/N the last to order. Y/N’s jaw clenched when a couple entered the café behind them, putting more pressure on her to decipher the menu.

Katie could tell Y/N was about to give up and potentially decline ordering all together.

“We need another minute, you can go ahead of us,” the defender nudged Y/N over, motioning for the couple to order before them.

“I have no idea what I want,” Katie stayed close to Y/N, “maybe whole latte love?” she pointed to the first drink on the board, “or smashing pumpkin spice latte?”

Katie continued to read some of the obnoxious names, pointing to each one as she went, watching out of the corner of her eye as Y/N’s shoulders slowly dropped.

“Blah, who came up with these? AC/DECAF? The count macchiato?”

“Thank you, Katie,” Y/N whispered when she had finished reading the menu.

“Anytime,” she winked and moved to order, Y/N ordering quickly behind, tapping her card to pay for both.

Katie made a point of sitting next to Y/N at restaurants, sharing a menu, causally pointing things out, and reading them out loud. She did her best to be subtle and avoid drawing attention to them when she did it. She had learned what Y/N preferred to eat and only read those options out for her, patiently holding the menu up her to continue reading at her pace in case there was something else she wanted.

“Oh, this one sounds good, filet mignon with bearnaise sauce and seasonal vegetables,” Katie dragged her finger under the words as she read it out loud, Y/N softly whispering after the brunette finished speaking.

Katie continued reading the options to herself, then reading out another she thought Y/N might like, “herb crusted chicken breast with rice pilaff.”

Y/N would forever be grateful the way Katie patiently read menus to her, never making her feel dumb for struggling over the process. Her ability to offer help so casually and discreate amazed her. The defender was normally so brash and blunt, that she was caught off guard at how she just made it seem like she was thinking out loud the way she read things off to Y/N.

Tim: how bad?

Raven:..I’m already feeling sick and I’m not even in the building yet..

Jason: okay we’re leaving.

Dick: yeah we can go anywhere else. Heck there is an Italian place across the street.

Raven: y’all don’t have to do that.

Raven: no..no I’m okay

I know I already posted about this before, but Invader Zim really does nail how autism feels from the inside with the way it portrays food.

Like many autistic people, Irkens have a very restrictive diet, consisting mostly of junk food. Human food is always portrayed as disgusting, but especially from Zim's perspective, often making him gag from just the sight or smell. To hammer the point home even further, some of it is even explicitly said to be made out of non-edible substances and a major brand name is literally "Poop".

Zim loves to eat like any Irken, but at lunch time every day he has to choose between trying to choke down something he doesn't want to or just not eating. Like Zim, autistic people are more prone to food allergies, which means their aversion to certain foods may be more than preferential. But even if you aren't allergic, having to eat something you have an aversion to can feel as awful as if it burnt your skin on contact. But Zim is pressured to eat human food despite the discomfort it causes him in order to not draw negative attention, and his painful and humiliating experiences evoke the trauma of being screamed at, shamed, and punished for "being rude", "ungrateful", "picky", or "a brat" for refusing to eat or failing to adequately hide displeasure. Even Zim's delight at being able to stomach what he thinks are human waffles and his hopes of being able to build up a tolerance for human FILTH in order to better pass for normal evoke the autistic experience of discovering a new food and feeling proud for "expanding your palate", after a lifetime of being taught that food sensitivity is a sign of immaturity and a moral failing.

This man can SPRINT in heels I will die on this hill

If it wasn't for the military, he'd sleep until noon

Probably work a nightshift too

He needs coffee to function, if he doesn't have coffee he's a grouch

Takes his time waking up, not an early bird

He needs like five alarms to wake up

Bathroom first kind of person

Sometimes takes a shower in the morning, depends on if he didn't the night before

COFFEE and juice

Sweet tooth, a horrible sweet tooth

Chocolate chip pancakes are his go to, or whatever the canteen has tbh he's not that picky

He sleeps in whatever, or just his boxers does not care-

He does not dress up, he's in a uniform and looks presentable 9/10 out of ten. He's in a t-shirt and sweats when he's not deployed

Takes a shower every night, sometimes multiple times in the same night if he still feels grimey after the first one

He doesn't take baths often, but when he does it has bubbles and a rubber duckie. He likes the simple things in life guys

He likes simple scents, nothing complex

He hates 3-in-1

He likes Mint toothpaste

He eats when he can, but has pocket snacks

He loves home cooked meals

He likes smoothies, the purple ones (that he can never remember the name of) he gets from a smoothie shop are his favorites

He never makes meals for later, he's not that organized-

Rarely has leftovers

Get's fast food once in a blue moon

Doesn't eat out much, unless it's a special occasion

He does most of the chores, he has a specific way he does things

DESPISES dishes, hates the feeling of the food being squishy and soft under his fingers

IMMEDIATELY washes dishes after using them

Does have a "laundry chair" but it doesn't last long tbh

Makes his bed in the morning, military taught him well

Has a car, but that's about it

Owns a car, but it's this little puddle hopper and it's beat up- He could afford a better car, but he's deployed a lot so he probably won't buy one

He literally takes his car through the biggest puddles ever, just to see the water arch. He's easily amused

He has it silenced 9/10, he silences it for missions and forgets to unsilence it

He has candy-crush on his phone and I will stand firm on this

He has snapchat but uses it for the filters, also has facebook for market place and Tiktok for the car videos

He has a few followers on Tiktok

He can block someone easy

He posts his cooking fails online

He probably has angered the baking/cooking niche online A LOT, dude probably has callouts from five years ago because he doesn't care-

He sleeps whenever, but totally has sleeping meds for his PTSD

He can either be up all night or in seconds, depends on how tired he is tbh

He's a light sleeper

He talks in his sleep, but it's mostly mumbles

Has nightmares more often than not

Has a bit of light from his TV, finds it hard to sleep without it

Sleeps with every window and door locked

Has his bed in the corner of the wall, hard to be attacked from both sides

His handwritting is damn near impossible to understand, sometimes Price has a hard time deciphering it

He's an outdoorsy type

The first memory is of being with him mom at a fair

He likes bread, just bread ;-;

He listens to literally everything, except classical it puts him to sleep

He loves cats, and has one at his moms

Struggles with gifts tbh

He went from the tallest in his family, to the one of the shortest on his team

He's huge on physical touch, especially with his partner

He said something that made Ghost stop in his tracks once, and then ever did again. It was so stupid it was smart

Soap is so fucking sociable it honestly annoys Ghost

He really wants to get married, but doesn't want to put the stress of him always being deployed on his spouse and he doesn't want to die on them

He's allergic to Buckwheat, Shellfish, Balsam of Peru, Tegretol, and Cosmetics

Whenever something traumatic happens he shrugs and goes: "Well that happened" and goes on with his life

He has a lot of scars, mostly from war itself most of them are on his upper arms but some are on his chest and forearms

He has a scar from getting a gash on his leg when playing when he was a kid, he needed A LOT of stitches

He has one that looks like a cresant moon on his right hand ring finger

He honestly doesn't mind when people trace his scars, it's kinda soothing

A little kid once asked about one on his chest, which he got when a bomb went on prematurely, and he said he got it from a T-Rex to entertain the kid.

That was also when he decided he wanted kids, when the kids eyes blew open wide and they bounced on their toes asking more questions. Which he provided absurd answers until the kids mom rushed over and apologized

The one on his chest was from a near-death experience, learned really quick how to run really really fast

He holds his partner close during cuddling, if their back is against his chest his face in buried in their neck. If he's laying on top of them, he has his head against their stomach and his arms protectively around their waist, or if his head is on his lap he just gently holds them and usually falls asleep

He's close with all of his family but is 1n00% a momma's boy

He stims by making faces, which is slightly weird if you don't know him wel

Ok, ok... I have one request with ror! I have been waiting for this. Also, really loves your writings, it made my day

This is basically my most recent experience. Child reader have severe allergic to peanuts and her family (the entire ror team) know this and warned her school prior, to avoid her getting allergic reaction during school times. One day, there was an event at school, where all the ror attend it since reader is performing with her class and want them to come and parents/family members were invited.

After child reader performance, she immediately went to enjoy lunch with her family and she suddenly got the urge to eat something sweet. This led her to go by the food stall, which was run by a few parents and teachers, who sells baked goods, drinks, etc to the students and parent. Child reader bought some cookies after the mother that sells it confirmed there was not peanuts, only for the reader to get instant allergic reaction!

Thankfully, her family reacted fast and inject her with her epipen. When the mother was confront, she responded with "Allergic doesn't exist. Children uses it as an excuse to be picky!"

How will the ror react to this, especially when reader is crying because she is terrified since it has been long since she got a horrible allergic reaction?

When I first read this request, I got so pissed off! I hate people who have this mentality, those who are willing to put the lives of others at stake to prove an asinine point that usually ends up with someone getting hurt, sick, even killed, which ends with them getting arrested. As someone who has a food sensitivity myself (not really a food allergy, but I have to watch how much gluten I eat in one sitting or risk messing up my stomach for a few days) I hate it when others think that we’re just being picky, or we use that as an excuse for who knows what!

-Your family learned young that you were severely allergic to peanuts, hives and throat swelling with a risk of death if you were even come into contact with peanuts.

-You learned a lot about this too, learning what questions to ask so you wouldn’t risk the chance of having a reaction, as you had a few times in your life where you had been rushed to the hospital, and hospitals scared you as it scared your family seeing you in one.

-For the most part, it was pretty easy to avoid peanuts or things with peanuts, as you all got to know what things have and don’t have them, it was just outside of home where you had to be careful, like at sleepovers or at school.

-It was Parent’s Day at school, and you were so excited to be performing with your second-grade class, as you would all be singing, and your class had been practicing so hard!

-There were so many things happening at your school, pony rides, a huge bake sale, a bounce house, and you got the chance to show your massive family around your school.

-Your class preformed, and you couldn’t help but grin, seeing your whole cheering section cheering loudly for your class, but mainly for you, as your family was a staple around school, everyone knew about them because nobody else had such a huge family.

-After a few more performances, there was a break, and a large snack table was set up, filled with baked treats, extra stuff not a part of the bake sale, and all students were allowed to go up and get a treat.

-You saw one of your friend’s mom manning the treats and she beamed at you as you ran up, “You all did so well Y/N! Tammy said you were all working so hard and I can see that it was hard work paid off! What can I get for you?”

-You looked at the treats, eyeing the different things available before you paused, remembering the rule, “What doesn’t have peanuts in it? I have an allergy.”

-She just smiled, directing you to some cookies, giving you a napkin and you headed back towards your family who was watching you come over.

-You bit into the cookie and as soon as you swallowed the first bite you knew it had peanuts in it, your throat swelling as you instantly paled.

-Loki screamed out your name as attention quickly went to you, seeing your having an allergic reaction, a severe one as Brunnhilde grabbed your Epi-Pen from Eve, jamming it into your thigh.

-A teacher was on the phone, calling for an ambulance and instantly several of your family members stomped over to Tammy’s mom, demanding to know what she was thinking giving you peanuts.

-Hades spoke, his rage barely contained, “Why did you give her something with peanuts? She told you she has an allergy!”

-Her mom didn’t look bothered in the slightest, rolling her eyes, “Allergies are just something kids use now to be picky!” Hades leaned in close, seeing the school nursing guiding in the paramedics, who had been nearby, waiting for an injury on the bounce house, “She could die because of you- you deliberately poisoned her!”

-A couple of police officers, seeing the group, were quick to approach, hearing this, “Is this true? Did that child tell you about an allergy and you knowingly gave that to her?”

-She was in hysterics, “She’s lying- you’re all lying! There’s no such thing as allergies!!” she was quickly placed in cuffs and taken away as you were being taken away, Tammy and her father watching nearby, Tammy in tears to see you being taken away while her dad was furious, seeing what his wife had done.

-You had to spend three days in the hospital, in a coma after you nearly died, as you weren’t getting oxygen into your body. Tammy and her parents visited you, with her mom being watched, seeing the state you were in.

-Tammy couldn’t help but tear up, “Mommy- why did you hurt my friend?” Seeing all the judging and angry eyes on her quickly had her mother embarrassed, wanting to run and hide, but her husband made sure she knew the severity of what she had done, keeping her there, making her look at your little body in the hospital bed.

-Her mother had to attend classes, to show her that allergies were a real thing, showing the signs and symptoms, including death, to educate her, and she had to pay your hospital bill, something she wasn’t pleased with, and she was banned from baking at any school function again. Her reputation also took a hard hit, losing most of her friends and Tammy was upset because none of her friends wanted to play at her house anymore.

-You were well cared for, healing and soon you were back on your feet, playing with Tammy who came to visit with you.

-It became a thing at school to regularly educate not only the kids but parents and families as well about allergies, especially food related allergies, because so many had been scared for you, seeing how badly you reacted.

-Good education and knowledge is what kept not only you but others safe and it was up to everyone to make sure everyone was safe.

So I’m starved for Smiling Critters content, but I don’t exactly have a oneshot in mind to write nor do I exactly have an AU. I do, however, have some headcanons that are definitely canon divergent, especially since I imagined it in the cartoon-like world they were in during the tape recording. I don’t know if it’s enough to build up an AU, but I’m posting them anyways.

•Bubba is fluent in English and Portuguese, and is currently trying to learn sign language from Catnap

•Dogday has 2 sisters and 3 brothers, and he is also the runt of the litter (most of his siblings don’t really care, but one of his brothers likes to pick on him for it and is upset he got “special treatment” when they were younger — that special treatment was mostly just medical treatment and their parents and siblings being responsibly worried about him)

•Bobby and Picky share a favorite way of showing her friends love; by making them their favorite/comfort food for them

•Hoppy doesn’t usually like going slow, but she adores running with her two younger brothers to no end

•Bubba strongly believes Hoppy might have seasonal allergies due to her falling ill for a few weeks when winter turns to spring and pollen levels rise, but Hoppy has her suspicions due to the fact that she’s never been diagnosed to be allergic to anything

•Picky always looks at the nutrition labels at the grocery store

•Picky is thinking about starting her own garden

•Crafty prefers to draw rather than write, but enjoys a good book (she definitely doesn’t have a small library in her living room, I don’t know what you’re talking about)

•Crafty isn’t the best at magic, but she’s learning and her friends are very encouraging

•Bobby’s house is a cozy two story cottage that she keeps nice and clean on a daily basis

•Bobby and Bubba both have a closet in their house full of extra blankets, pillows, towels, and winter clothes

•Kickin’ loves to teach anyone who asks how to surf, how to skateboard, or how to ski

•Catnap almost never talks or makes any sound, but it’s not because he can’t, it’s because he simply prefers not to

•Kickin’ has a great sense of balance

•Catnap is a light sleeper

•Bobby and Catnap sometimes work together to get the group to bed, but in the end, Catnap “turns on her” and gets her to bed too before going to sleep himself

•Kickin’ and Dogday love to plan hiking or camping trips for the group (Hoppy has to stay within someone’s sight so she doesn’t run off, Bobby and Crafty like to stop and look at flowers, Picky likes to pack healthy snacks for everyone, Bubba enjoys telling facts about plants, and Catnap keeps an eye on the whole group by walking in the back)

•Catnap has a surprising amount of knowledge surrounding sleep, even Bubba didn’t know a lot of the things he did

•Bobby has made a plushie for everyone except Catnap, who already has a small, odd plushie resembling a blue creature with yellow hands and feet (Crafty has a flower, Dogday has a bone, Bubba has a dinosaur, Picky has a strawberry, Hoppy has a star, Kickin’ has a dragon, and Bobby has a heart)

I've got a lot, might have minor TSC spoilers though, proceed with caution

The most oblivious fool to ever exist

I've always hc him as autistic, and I stand by that. He's the most peer reviewed autistic person I know.

If it's not exy, the Trojans, Andrew and Neil, or alcohol he doesn't notice

Meaning he doesn't know how Jean feels about him at all

I don't think they could ever be friends unless they addressed it though

His first crush besides Thea was Jeremy, Thea always kids that Jeremy is Kevin's "hall pass" even tho they aren't monogamous in the traditional way

Also, Thea and him aren't monogamous.

Kevin is aroflux and bisexual and I don't think he truly knew what either of those words meant until after he went pro.

He is like a oblivious third wheel to Neil and Andrew for the rest of their lives, like he just walks into their home whenever he pleases.

He's allergic to cats but he loves Neil and Andrew's cats too much to stay away.

The first time Jean and Kevin go on court against each other, they get into a fight on the court. It's the first and only time Jean got into a fight while being a Trojan.

Thea called them to scold them afterwards.

However, when they play on the USA team, they get along significantly better. (They don't want to be scolded by Thea again)

Thea and Kevin try to have hobbies, Thea thought it'd help them.

Which is how they have a few paintings on their walls, a electric keyboard that Kevin learned to play 2 songs on before quitting, and Andrew and Neil got some very ugly mugs because Thea refused to keep them and Kevin didn't want to throw them out.

I don't think they'd have kids, not on purpose, especially not with Thea's career, she wouldn't give that up.

They might have one oops kid, who they'd love dearly, but oh my goodness would Kevin be panicking the whole goddamned time.

Thea also seems therapy, after Kevin kinda insists, because unlearning some of the raven things that she didn't realize where a problem was necessary for their relationship..

The summer after Kevin tells Wymack he's his dad, Wymack tries to do a lot of father-son bonding things.

Abby tries to discourage the stupider ones.

Kevin doesn't mind them though.

He gets very close with Dan her last year.

He keeps in touch with her more than anyone but Neil and Andrew.

His favorite food is sushi, but it took him forever to try it because he was convinced he'd hate it.

He's a deceptively picky eater.

The Apothecary Diaries Episode 6 Review - The Garden Party

That does it. This episode proves that Maomao is one of the best female MCs I’ve seen in an anime. She’s smart, strong-willed and completely crazy. Like, Maomao could be the only character in this story and I’d still be entertained by her. She’s great.

While the color-changing fire mystery is still in the air, the garden party did reveal something else crucial: there was almost an assassination attempt as Maomao tasted poison in soup meant for Consort Lishu that was switched. Maomao enjoying being a food taster and how she was enjoying consuming poison is hilarious but also pretty cool to watch. The poison in the soup must have been very strong as this is the first time Maomao is regurgitating profusely.

Other than seeing Maomao being a poison addict, she’s actually quite popular. Not only did she get a hair stick from Jinshi in the previous episode, she got two more; one from a eunuch named Lihaku who was passing several out to girls who didn’t receive any and one from Lihua. Seeing Lihua giving her a hair stick was so sweet to see. She really adores her. Not only that, Maomao is “popular” in the sense that she is the topic of gossip from the Crystal Pavilion ladies-in-waiting. One girl had a tendency to talk bad about her, but Maomao’s colleagues were defending her. Maomao decided to glare at the girl to scare her off. She’s not like other girls; she will fight back when necessary.

Out of the main four consorts, Lishu gets a bit more focus as there’s a bit of history behind her. She’s actually the consort of the previous Emperor, meaning she’s technically the “mother-in-law” of Ah Duo and the other high consorts. Why is she so young? Well…it turns out that the previous emperor is very icky; he was a p*do as he liked young girls. The current Empress Dowager is a lot younger than you expect because she had the previous Emperor at a very young age (it turns out to be ten years old). Because of her age and the fact that she has been consort twice to two different emperors made her be looked down upon her own ladies-in-waiting and with others in general, it seems. Like, her main color is white, but she showed up wearing a pink dress, which clashes with Gyokuyou’s crimson. The soup she was supposed to eat was exchanged with a dish that had fish in it that she seemed scared of eating. It turns out that her taste-tester purposely switched it out to pick on her picky eating habits, but it turns out that she’s allergic to seafood (or is it just mackerel?); eating it would give her rashes. Maomao points out how severe allergic reactions could be and it’s like poisoning her in a way. Lishu’s tester didn’t seem to know she was allergic and just thought she was picky, most likely. Since poisoning and killing Lishu would be a serious crime, I just hope the tester lady gets karma handed to her one day.

The only character that wasn’t present in the garden party was the Emperor’s younger brother. I feel like it’s Jinshi with the way he was elsewhere, but it feels weird. He looks nothing like the Emperor and looks more like Ah Duo. Is he the Emperor’s son but has to pose as the younger brother or something?

I do wonder if the poison attempt is linked with the color changing fire. I thought Lishu’s bully was the culprit, but it seems that the culprit is still out there. Will this ever get solved or will it be an unsolvable case? I’m asking because next episode’s preview looks like Maomao is returning home. What are your thoughts?
