Slow Damage Artbook SS: Translation Comparison
(Text below is copied from the Gdoc file for the sake of providing context to this post.)
So to start, as far as I knew, there was only one fan TL of the artbook short story. Turns out, however, there was another one. I only knew about this when a friend shared with me their copy of the other translation.
I read it, and it read really differently from the translation I was familiar with, but not for the reasons I expected. It was then that I got an idea for something…
Now I previously made it clear in some of the fan translations I shared in these Carrds that I only repost translations of others only under very special circumstances (which is usually when one: the translation got taken down because the translator had deleted/deactivated their account some time ago and no other copy exists elsewhere, or two: there was some ugly drama involving the translator who then moved their translations to somewhere locked and private).
In this case, I decided to try and make a line-by-line comparison of both translations of the artbook short story. Compare and contrast is the main purpose of this document, so I don’t encourage you to use this post as your means of reading through the SS in this particular document for leisure, but at the end of the day, it depends on what you prefer.
As a disclaimer: I got permission from the one who provided the first translation to share the translation from start to finish in this post (Note: the original link for their translation is here).
For the second translation… I could ask the other translator… but according to the friend who shared with me their personal copy of the translation (so I don’t know where it really came from, and my friend doesn’t remember the original link either), the translator – who was also commissioned by someone else, apparently – opted to stay anonymous.
And again, this post isn’t for casual reading purposes. It's just for you to see the difference in both translations for yourselves.
(NOTE: It is recommended to read the document on desktop, not on mobile. That, and a HUGE spoiler warning for those who have yet to finish Fujieda’s route.)

hi i just want to say that your art is such an inspiration and i absolutely adore how loose and fluid and expressive your style can be!! if you don’t mind me asking have there been any particular styles you’ve studied or tricks/methods/practices/shapes that you’ve found to be particularly helpful for achieving that look? i hope you have a wonderful day :DD
thank you so much! you are so sweet 😭 for styles I studied there are many but I'd say where I got the shapes I draw from the most would be yoshinari yoh! (Little witch academia, brand new animal) I got one of his artbooks full of sketches and it really helped me grasp the way he draws bodies! I also study things in motion a lot rather than still pictures to get a feel for movement that adds fluidity to my bodies if that makes sense!

182 Days of TPN - Day 102
Chapter 102: “Found It”
I don’t remember much of the demon town scenes in the anime (because honestly, who would want to remember?), but I am kinda upset we didn’t see much of these demon kids, especially the smaller one with the fascination for leaves. It’s cute.
Tumblr media
This is some very unfortunate foreshadowing. “Yet” might as well be very large and in bold print.
Tumblr media
If it wasn’t for the artbook, I would’ve never realized that Dominic was actually wearing an animal pelt in this panel. He has every right to be proud of it! I am too and I love this child immensely!
Tumblr media
The way the younger kids rush to carry out Ray’s very specific request with no questions asked.. GF kids are definitely something to be feared. I would’ve definitely needed him to repeat his instructions at least thrice. Not to mention that Ray knows exactly which books he needs and where they were located. Yeah his great memory helps out with that, but then you gotta remember that between the trip to and from GP and being out on the Cuvitdala search for several months, Ray really hasn’t been around the shelter for that long compared to everyone else, so the fact he’s already read through the entire shelter library is so damn impressive to me.
Tumblr media
Darn accursed timeskips making us miss out on all the exploring. Little headcanon of mine is that the east side trip is when Emma loses one of her hairpins since she has all three while saying bye to Yuugo & everyone else.
Tumblr media
As much as I enjoyed seeing Emma & Ray do all that parkour throughout the town in the anime, I would’ve much rather had this small reveal rather than the chase scene with those two larger demons whom I didn’t really care for. And we’re not even gonna mention how that whole fiasco ended. Nope.
Tumblr media
Hey Don’s doing his best! & I love how often we’ve seen the GV kids impressed with those from GF up to this point and now GV is getting some well deserved praise as well. All the children are just amazing. Plain and simple.
Tumblr media
Also nice to see the subtle change everyone went through over the past year and how happy and at ease everyone is. For now. (I think Paula has a scarf now too, or at least it looked like one in an earlier panel this chapter.)
Tumblr media
And I am SO VERY PROUD of them all! My babies grow up so fast because of timeskips. But damn, that’s another thing I’m mad about.. season two not even giving Ray his scarf! It’s fine, he and Paula can be scarf buddies. Maybe that’s where he got it from. Who knows. We never will.
Tumblr media
Favorite panel/moment:
Seeing how wild Emma’s hair can truly be. Even Ray’s has become a mess.

Hi, I just want to ask if you know anything about what Chen’s potential token might be? It says it’s a thing that has been sealed (or covered in dust in CN) for a long time that she hasn’t forgotten about it and that it might burn again someday. Did it get mentioned somewhere in the story or is it just about chixiao? I don’t know who to ask so I’m here if you don’t mind 🫣
They don't explicitly mention it anywhere but I think it is Chi Xiao yeah because of her module saying that the sword rarely got unsheathed after she left with Rhodes...
Tumblr media
She draws it out a little in her S2/completely in her S3 and it looks positively charred and rustier than the regular sword she uses
Tumblr media
Bit from the Artbook (Reset) where it says 'Modern Chi Xiao blade' so I'm thinking she basically has a chi xiao shaped dummy (still sharp lol) sword for everyday use
The ancient chi xiao form there on the most right is so fucking random though...... UNLESS it shows up in the new event then I will drop all my spaghetti (Love the random Small Seal Script(I think) in the bottom left literally made for me etc etc)
The top left says that the part is moveable but doesn't explain any purpose

@arrnuts
I’m still trying to avoid posting full art book spoilers at the moment, and I’m also aware of the fact that there are a variety of readers here with various perspectives on fandom. What’s okay with one person, may not be okay with another, and I’d like this to be accessible to as many people as possible because I think it’s important. For those reasons, I’m going post your ask with a cropped picture. Thank you for sending it!
soo i got my artbook today. and i was really happy, the art was great, there was a decent amount of jamie art, and the comics were a super nice touch. i was pretty excited until i got to this picture
Tumblr media
and then i was. grossed out a bit.
but i couldn't figure out why. i so badly didn't want to turn into one of those "noodle purists" that can't fathom a 30 year old woman showing skin, and i was afraid that was exactly what was happening. until i realized that wasn't the issue!
noodle has had more scantily-clad art, which has never bothered me. this art weirds me out because noodle's body....... never looked like this. shes never been curvy, she's mostly been portrayed as rather petite, so this just seems off. weird. uncanny almost!
i don't like how often artists tend to exaggerate noodle's body to make her "sexy". unfortunately jamie hasn't been immune to that.
idk i just feel like i had to get that out there.
---
First of all, congratulations on getting your art book! Z2 seems to be doing a better job this time around, but even so, just receiving it is an accomplishment lmao. Everything I’ve seen from it has been really impressive, so I’m glad you’ve gotten to experience that.
That being said, I understand where you’re coming from. To put it out there, being uncomfortable with how Noodle is portrayed at times doesn’t make you a “Noodle purist,” imo. I think it’s hard to deny the clear difference between the art of Noodle/Cyborg Noodle and the art of the rest of the band. Noodle is a cartoon character. She isn’t real. She doesn’t choose her outfits, she doesn’t have thoughts of feelings. Pointing out what you did in your ask doesn’t mean you criticizing her for “showing skin,” you reflecting on a choice Jamie and other artists have made in how they portray her, and the context (historical, societal, etc) in which they’re creating and sharing their work. For that reason, yes, the thoughts, “Wow, Noodle looks great here,” and “Yeah, maybe this is geared towards the male-gaze,” are two thoughts that can co-exist and don’t contradict each other. You can also still love the art book and Jamie’s work and Gorillaz while acknowledging that.
Tbh, I’m not a big Noodle fan and I typically stay away from Noodle discussion because I don’t care that much, but this talking point has been around a while, and I think it gets a reputation as being very polarizing, when really it’s pretty nuanced and people are never usually one extreme or another. And on a personal note, as someone with Noodle’s original body type, I don’t take any offense to people pointing this out about her when they make their critiques. I actually like when Jamie draws her using her original, petite design, and I wish more artists would use it too. But, I also know and accept that it’s not always about being accurate.

Wizard Cookie is Vanillian. Waffle hat, made out of vanilla ice cream ( which is mentioned in the Vanilla Kingdom section of the crk artbook ), and that scene where he freaked out about the huge library during castle in the sky. Ofc he isn’t old enough to have actually have lived in the Vanilla Kingdom tho.
IM SORRY this has been marinading in my inbox for so long
Some thoughts: The affiliations of Wizard
Tumblr media
This is super interesting, we don’t know anything about who his parents would be but it could be a very similar situation to Custard, where he’s just a descendant of Vanilla Kingdom people. But this could also tie into his costumes a bit, or at least tie in some lore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Azure Flame Staff costume makes me think of Beacons Of Unity stuff, but the Arcane Mage costume is more interesting to me here. We know it’s tied into the City Of Wizards more than the Vanilla Kingdom, but those two could also be related way more than we think.
We haven’t seen much of the City Of Wizards in kingdom yet, but the end goal of the Wizards from what we know seems to align very well with the Vanilla Kingdom. Pursuit of infinite magical knowledge, and the (more metaphorical in Pure Vanilla’s case) divine ascension of a ruler. That being PV for the Vanilla Kingdom and Moonlight for the City Of Wizards.
Alongside this, they fall into two schools of magic that are the exact parallels of each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
White Magic seems to fit the description for the Vanilla Kingdom well, and Dark Moon Magic is definitely the City Of Wizards.
With this, we can assume they’d be at least some form of connected kingdoms. They directly parallel each other in even minor things as well like color scheme.
For how this ties back into Wizard, it gets complicated because he’s far too young to be actually from the Vanilla Kingdom himself. But he could be a descendant from the Vanilla Kingdom, and is much more closely tied to the City Of Wizards by now in his life. And this would be an INCREDIBLY interesting plot point for him, actually being a tie between these two parallel kingdom by being an active participant in both cultures and types of magic at the same time. He might not even know about his own connection to the Vanilla Kingdom if so, or how important he is to connecting them both.
This got slightly off the topic of just Wizard himself but I managed to come back around to him, I just really think this can create a whole interesting thing in a lot of different regards and especially related to the two kingdoms interconnectivity. Thank you so much for this ask/concept

People keep saying the artbook stated Ingo is in his 50s in PLA. That doesn't sound right to me, and I can't seem to find any source other than "I saw someone else say it.".
What do you think, do you think it could be true? Or even if it could work? (I always imagned 37 at most.)
Thank you for asking me my thoughts Anon! I appreciate that!
apologies this got long, so TL;DR at the bottom!
I keep seeing people say that too with such an amount of certainty that I feel like it has to be somewhere, but I can’t find that either. I’ve mentioned it myself as well but really more as others speculation.
I will say 50+ doesn’t sound right to me either. Strictly looking at his in-game model it just does not seem like he’s in his 50’s (having grey hair already doesn’t help with age estimation at all though haha)But then again Calaba is 99 and I’d say she doesn’t look it at all. She looks old, but not 99 old, so you never really know.
30’s is a general estimation I really like though anon! And I personally thought that he was somewhere in that age range myself.
I really think this way because of the way the game has Ingo hint at who he is by talking about his memories in wayward cave.
The memories Ingo talked about with you (Chandelure, Emmet, discussing and doing Pokémon battles) were not new memories, they were things we had all seen him doing in Gen 5 games when he was in his 20’s (25?).
It doesn’t mean he wouldn’t still be doing the same things for like 30 years or something, but from a narrative design standpoint, it’s supposed to help you make the connection that this guy is Ingo from Unova. Actual Ingo, not an ancestor. (I know it helped me because I did not really make the connection in my gameplay until he started talking about Emmet)
But the fact that the memories he’s talking about with you are all reminiscent of what we see him doing in the Gen 5 games when he’s in his 20’s just make me feel inclined to link him closer to his Gen 5 age, because it makes me remember him when he was in his 20’s (mind you the game has you make this connection when you’re just getting to know him). So I don’t have a problem with him being 50, but I have a hard time making that connection because the game made me get aquatinted with him while reminding me of things we had seen him doing when he was in his 20s, without telling us how old he really is.
Of course this is just my personal way of thinking and how I tend to automatically connect things to information that media will go out of its way to remind you of. Because if it does that, it’s usually important and done intentionally. But not everyone thinks this way.
TL;DR
Personally, I have a hard time seeing him as 50 (right now at least) but I don’t have a problem with it, I think it can work, and I think with time I could get aquatinted to it if it turns out to be canon. But because of the Wayward Cave setup, where the game reminds you of who Ingo is by introducing things we had seen him do when he was in his 20’s, and showing you he is indeed older with changes to his appearance, but not giving you his actual age, I see him as in his 30s by now and had really held that as a headcanon for months. It’s very close to your headcanon!
Thanks for asking!!

Can you write about Iris hanging out with the ghost of her father? It’s sad these two never got to know each other in canon.
Apologetic Apparition
Notes: It's very sad that the story unfolds as it does and that we know so little about Klint or Lady B (it's an utter travesty that Capcom couldn't even be bothered to give her a name or some sketches in the artbooks). Perhaps if we'd gotten to see more of Iris's parents, it would have given us an idea of what they'd have been like as a family...
Content Warnings: angst; GAA spoilers
"Well here we are!" Iris announced proudly as she took off her welding goggles and looked down at her latest creation, "They're finished at long last, now I only need to test them to make sure they work!"
"I say, Iris, you've been busy at that crafting table of yours for some time," Herlock observed as he reclined on the chaise lounge in the centre of the room and propped his legs up on the fortified, locked trunk that acted as their coffee table, "What have you been up to, dear girl?"
She twirled around in her spinning chair so she could regard her roommate, "I've made something quite marvelous this time, Hurley!" in her hands were a pair of goggles.
"Goggles?" they hardly seemed 'marvelous', but he knew better than to assume such things; after all, one cannot judge a book by its cover, for to do so is to ignore the richness that lies within, "And what is special about this particular pair?"
"They should, if I've calibrated them correctly, give me the ability to see the lingering remnants of the deceased!"
"Oh ho! So you've crafted glasses that will enable you to see ghosts, have you? Quite an interesting idea, dear girl! Whatever inspired you to do such a thing?"
Iris fell silent for a few moments, then offered a small smile, "Oh... just a little personal project. I should very much like to test them! Could you possibly do me a favour, Hurley?" she tilted her head and looked at him with pleading eyes.
"...." how could he resist the dear girl's plea? Iris was the only person he truly considered family (of course his partner occupied a place that was quasi-familial, but it was an entirely different beast). With a fond smile, he held open his arms and nodded, "Of course, what can I do for you?"
Her reply was not what he had expected...
──────≪⊰✥⊱≫───────
It was the dead of night, and they were crouched outside the imposing building where agents of the crown worked tirelessly to bring wrongdoers to justice –- or, the Prosecutor's Office by any other name. Hurley had his reservations when Iris told him where she wanted to go, but he also had a pretty good idea of where in the office she wanted to go and why.
He would not question it, this was something the dear girl needed to do.
After he had infiltrated the building and obtained a set of security guard clothes, he set about on a mock patrol of the premises; taking note of the number of other fellows currently present and making a few educated guesses with regards to their routes. It would be easy enough to smuggle the young girl inside if he did so swiftly and via the western exit.
It was as easy as he'd anticipated to bring her inside, "Right," he said softly, "Where are we heading?" despite already knowing, he would play the fool for now.
"Um... Hurley... would you mind if I went inside on my own?" she asked gently as they walked down a long corridor with numerous doors and plaques beside them. They had come to a stop outside one particularly imposing, nigh-medieval door; with a plaque that read: [Lord Barok van Zieks].
Sholmes smiled, "Of course... just knock on the door three times when you are finished, alright? I shall knock similarly if I sense danger. You must come with me without delay if I knock, alright?"
Iris nodded.
Then, she turned to the door and opened it with a key that Herlock had taken from the security guard's office. Stepping inside was a daunting prospect -- Mr. Reaper's Office was as imposing as him, perhaps more so in the dead of night with nothing but the moonlight spilling in through the large arched windows along the far wall. After taking a deep breath, she donned the goggles and activated them.
At first, nothing happened and she started to fret that maybe her calculations had been off and that she ought to have tested them somewhere more accessible before embarking on this particular visit-- then, she caught some faint glowing traces in the air.
She looked around the room and found a glowing figure stood with its back to her, looking up at the large portrait that took pride of place overlooking the office. It was difficult to tell anything about the form, save for that it was humanoid in shape.
"Why do you insist on keeping this portrait here, brother?" the figure said, in a voice that she discerned to be a male one, "Surely you ought to have had one of your own commissioned by now?"
"Um... excuse me? You there, by the portrait."
She'd never seen a ghost jump before, but this one certainly did twirl around with a start. As he turned, the form seemed to take a clearer shape and she realised he was the same as the man in the portrait – Klint van Zieks.
It was her father, just as she'd hoped.
"Goodness! You gave me quite the fright, young lady."
"Oh... I'm sorry," she looked down bashfully, only to be surprised when he laughed heartily.
"No, no, don't be! I'm simply surprised you can see me..." he cocked his head to the side, arms folded, "Might it be that curious apparatus you're wearing that enables you to see and hear me? No one else seems to..." she nodded, "Ah, I see... Pray, do forgive my presumptuousness, but, you remind me a great deal of my darling wife... I cannot think that is a mere coincidence."
It made her heart shiver to hear that, "... Um... yes, well, that would be my mother, sir, and you.. you are..."
"Then I'm... your father," Klint breathed, eyes wide, "Oh... So you are our sweet little starling..." for a moment he looked off to the side, smiling almost wistfully, "... Truly, you are a good man Genshin..." then he returned his focus to the girl, "Would you tell me your name, child?"
"Iris, sir, Iris Wilson..."
"Iris," he said, "A lovely name, very befitting of such a charming young lady. And, well, it seems you already know who I am..."
"Yes... I do," she knew full well, "I... I have so many things I want to ask you about..."
Klint nodded and walked over to the desk that had once been his and was now the place where his brother spent most of his time in stony silence, deeply engrossed in his work. He sat on it, legs dangling over the edge, "I'm sure you must have, I will try to answer to the best of my ability."
"... Thank you," she took a seat at the table that was currently home to the beginnings of a new diorama, presumably Mr. Reaper's latest case. For a few moments, she fell silent: her mind had gone blank. There were so many questions, but how to pick out just one? Where to begin?
"Perhaps I might start?" he offered, having clearly picked up on her overwhelmed state of mind. When she nodded, he started:
"As you know, my name is Klint van Zieks, I was born in North Devon. You've already met my little brother, Barok, your uncle, and much like you... he suffers a certain wistfulness when it comes to matters of family. It seems I've left you both somewhat at a loss. Do forgive me, Iris, I never intended to cause either of you the turmoil I have. I had always thought that keeping the truth from the two of you might spare you the embarrassment and stigma that knowing who I was would bring..."
She listened quietly, studying his face as he spoke. It was clear that his words were earnest, judging by their tone and the look of genuine remorse on his face.
"... I committed several heinous acts in life, and though I thought it was the right thing to do... it was misguided and naive. I sought to solve a problem by fighting fire with fire, but such an approach can only result in a destructive end. It cost me everything – including your mother, my darling wife... I was so thrilled when she told me she was pregnant, but at the same time I was terrified of what impact it might have had on her were I to tell her the truth. I did not want her or our unborn child to suffer... in the end, she died during childbirth. I cannot help but wonder if things would have been different if we'd been together in the family home with the necessary staff on hand to help her... I suppose I'll never know."
At some point as he spoke, tears had begun to bead in her eyes; then they spilled as she thought of the mother she would never know and the father who had tried to protect them – albeit with a limited degree of success.
"My apologies are meaningless, but I would like you to know how sorry I am for my failings as a man and a father, and the impact that has had on you, Iris... Your mother and I... we were delighted by the prospect of having a family, and I couldn't be more proud to see you before me as radiant as she was. You are so very like her..."
"... Thank you... I--"
Suddenly there were three sharp knocks on the door.
Iris covered her mouth, "Oh! I'm so sorry... I have to go!"
"Mmm," he nodded, "I understand, this office isn't the best place for a reunion... would you mind if I came to visit you at some point, so that you can ask me the questions you wished to?"
"... Yes, I would like that... please do come and visit me, I should like to get to know my father better -- not The Professor."
Klint blinked, then stood up from his perch and bowed, "As you wish..."

hello! could you talk a bit more about the original (as in jp, not localization) ouma's personality and speech patterns? you've mentioned that he tends to trail off or speak more softly when it is implied he is speaking the truth, etc. and how he is not so loud/intentionally obnoxious. //btw when does he call himself a fairy? that's so cute
Tumblr media
I got a couple of questions asking about the fairy line Ouma has, so I don’t mind sort of rolling them both into one! And I’m more than happy to talk a little more in-depth about Ouma’s speech patterns and personality in the original game, too!
Since I’ll be covering some late-game spoilers, I’ll put the bulk of this under the cut, so be careful when reading!
First off, I cannot stress how much I recommed playing ndrv3 with the Japanese voices enabled. If you’ve already played through the English dub but never experiened the original voice acting cast, I promise you won’t be disappointed. The Japanese cast are all fantastic, incredibly talented VAs who, unlike the dub, were hired specifically for these roles and not just re-casted from previous DR games.
Hiro Shimono as Ouma gives an absolutely incredible performance. The localization might still have many flaws in its translation and omission of certain lines or punctuation, but you can still very much get a feel for how Ouma’s character was intended by listening to Shimono’s performance. Re-playing the game with the Japanese voices will definitely let you hear how soft and tonally different Shimono’s performance is in places from the English dub, and compare it to the way in which many lines are written and punctuated as if Ouma’s yelling at everyone.
That isn’t to say that Shimono’s Ouma is never loud or excited: Ouma is a character whose moods and façades are all over the place, and therefore his performance requires a voice actor who can similarly change moods and intonation on a dime. Ouma is very much loud and haughty and deliberately annoying when he’s supposed to be, but his voice is also low and ominous at other points when he’s trying to be scary. And again, it’s soft and hesitant in places where he’s considering divulging some of his information, or when he’s insisting that all the things he does are for everyone’s sake, because he cares about them and doesn’t want anyone to die.
These moments feel so much more genuine in the Japanese version of the game--because they’re meant to be. As fantastic of a liar as Ouma is, it’s much easier for us, the player, to tell when he’s lying on a re-play, knowing the information from chapters 5 and 6 that we do, and looking at cues like his sprites (often his blank-faced ones) and, yes, his delivery of certain lines.
This probably sounds like me just gushing about what a fantastic voice actor Hiro Shimono is, and in part that’s exactly what it is, but I want to stress that pretty much every single voice actor in the Japanese cast is just as fantastic and that they all do their jobs incredibly well. With all that gushing out of the way, I’ll move on to talking about some of Ouma’s actual speech tics and the way he refers to other characters.
Like most things about him, Ouma’s speech patterns are sort of an interesting mix and even seem a little contradictory at times. He uses the very masculine pronoun “ore” (オレ), but he also refers to nearly everyone (with only a handful of exceptions) by their surnames and the much more childish honorific “-chan” (i.e. “Saihara-chan,” “Akamatsu-chan,” “Amami-chan,” etc.)
The use of “-chan” is very interesting. Honorifics in Japan are extremely complicated and tend to mean different things depending on who is using them. Typically, “-chan” is seen as a very feminine way to refer to someone else, commonly used in close-knit friend groups among school girls.
There are, of course, a few notable exceptions to this however: often times, middle-aged or elderly people will call a child “-chan” regardless of gender, as a way of showing they find them cute and endearing. And sometimes, people will use “-chan” to refer to other things they find cute, such as pets, or even to refer to themselves in a sort of informal, tongue-in-cheek way.
The fact that Ouma uses “-chan” as an honorific to refer to nearly everyone in the game stands out quite a lot: by and large, boys don’t use this term to refer to other boys. Using “-chan” to refer to anyone you’ve just met or don’t know very well is already somewhat frowned upon, but a boy using it to refer to other boys is especially rare. This helps set Ouma’s character up as someone who is both incredibly casual and informal with others (not to mention, you know, quite coded). Considering childishness and lightheartedness are traits Ouma values, and how much emphasis is put on him having “a very innocent, childish streak that’s hard to hate,” it makes sense then that he would talk like this.
Not counting Monokuma and the Monokubs, the only characters who Ouma doesn’t refer to with “-chan” are Gonta and Kiibo, who he simply calls by name. This also says some interesting things about his character.
Gonta is easily the character who Ouma interacts with the most often, as well as the charater he hurts the most in the end. Ouma’s choice to exclude Gonta from his usual way of calling people is, I think, a testament to how much Gonta really wanted to be friends with him, even if their friendship was never exactly on equal footing.
Meanwhile with Kiibo, I feel the choice to exclude him from his usual way of addressing others is indicative of how much Ouma tried to remind himself that Kiibo “wasn’t human,” and therefore how suspicious he found his presence in the killing game. We know Ouma suspected Kiibo and likely even had an inkling of his role as the audience proxy/camera in the game, due to how Kiibo’s picture is one of the only others set aside on his whiteboard besides Saihara’s, with the word “weird” written next to it (he also clearly guessed about the cameras after Gonta’s line in chapter 2, as we see from how he commissioned Miu for the bug-vac).
Ouma clearly enjoys teasing Kiibo a lot, and their banter reads very much like a manzai comedy duo; I feel like Ouma often tried pushing himself to remember that Kiibo “wasn’t human” on purpose in order to not get too attached to him or too distracted from his goal of ending the killing game. I don’t think Ouma’s decision to exclude Kiibo from the way that he very particularly referred to most of the rest of the group was just an accident or a coincidence.
Honorifics aside, Ouma also refers to several characters in interesting ways. He often uses “daisuki na ___-chan” (大好きな) to refer to some of the other characters, a phrase which more or less equates to “my beloved.” He uses this phrase with Saihara more than any other character of the game, but there are a few other instances where he does use it with Amami, Momota, and (if I’m remembering correctly) Kaede. Pretty much every single instance where the localization put, “because I love you” or “because you’re my favorite” whenever Ouma was talking to Saihara was usually a point where he would specifically call him “my beloved Saihara-chan.”
In chapter 4 during the scene where Ouma is alone in the parlor of the VR world, he also specifically, exclusively refers to Saihara as “suki ni natta hito” (好きになった人), literally: “the person I fell in love with.” This line was changed in the localization to, “when there’s a person I like,” which is more or less literally correct--however, the phrase “suki ni natta” is much heavier and more loaded with explicitly romantic implications than “suki” would be on its own, as it’s often used in Japanese love songs and shoujo manga love confessions.
Worth noting in my opinion is the fact that this is the exact same phrasing Maki uses to describe her romantic feelings for Momota. Since Maki’s feelings for Momota are considered canonically confirmed because of this, Ouma’s feelings should be considered equally canon, but a lot of people don’t know this because, well, it’s sort of been lost in translation.
And now, on to the fairy line! Ouma calls himself a fairy in chapter 3, when he pops up in the middle of Saihara and Korekiyo’s discussion of the katana in Korekiyo’s lab. Full of enthusiasm, he decides to touch the sword and examine it for himself; Korekiyo starts to object, but Ouma interrupts and says:
Tumblr media
“Come on, it’s not a big deal! I’m like a fairy, so it’ll be fine!”
I’ve always really loved this line and thought it was super adorable, both as a nod to how fairies aren’t supposed to be able to touch steel in most fae mythos, as well as the fact that fairies tend to also have a love for mischief and pranks and lies. The localization apparently didn’t like it so much though, because this line is simply changed to, “Come on, would I lie to you?” instead.
One final thing I can think of as far as Ouma’s speech tics go is that his laugh in Japanese is romanized as “nishishi” instead of “neeheehee,” as this is closer to the Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound horses make--but I actually don’t mind this localization change at all! “Neeheehee” definitely looks a lot closer to the word “neigh” and helps capture that horse joke in a way that I feel like western players can more easily understand.
All in all, while I still definitely feel people can like and enjoy Ouma’s character from playing the localization alone, I still stand by my opinion that listening to the original Japanese voices helps give a much better picture of how the character was intended to come across, and really shows how much depth Hiro Shimono put into his performance. He’s quoted in the official ndrv3 artbook as saying that he believes Ouma is someone who’s actually “really meek if you take away his strong wish to outwit everyone” (credit to @kaibutsushidousha for the art book translation), and I think this interpretation of Ouma really shows through in so many of his lines.
Thank you both for the really fun questions! I hope I could provide some more interesting information about Ouma and the translation!

I was meant to add this in the other question but I forgot 🙃 thank you for answering as well. But do you think if Ulquiorra was still alive that something was bound to happen between him and Orihime ? I think their reunion would’ve been really beautiful and touching. It actually kinda reminds me of Damon and Elena in a way.
Okay... You are pushing me dangerously close to watching Vampire Diaries. I mean first there are all the sexy gifs on the internet, now you're comparing Damon and Elena to ulquihime... I need more free time.
Anyway, what happens if Ulquiorra lives?
Something, that's for sure. The thing that would determine the kind of the relationship between him and Orihime would be the same thing that has one of the greatest effects on any relationship: timing.
(long, rambling explanation under the cut)
If he came back quickly, like before the final arc or even during the time before We Do Knot Always Love You, I feel like it would have strong potential to turn romantic. The earlier he returns, the better the likelihood of success of Ulquihime being a real thing. Why? Well, part of it boils down to Ichigo.
Ichigo is the kind of boy who really has no time for girls. He has no mental energy to waste a thought on them. Sure, he cares for Orihime and has a special place in his heart for her, and he probably has urges and all the natural inclinations of boys who are interested in girls, but he leaves it there. He is busy getting other things done and proving himself to... himself. His kneejerk reaction is to push any concrete thoughts of romance or attraction as far away from his attention as possible.
In an interview in the JET artbook, Kubo mentions that Orihime and Ichigo did not start officially dating until after he graduated from university. I think ichihime is a very sweet and gentle ship, and once Ichigo makes his move at the end of We Do Know Always Love You, Orihime is kind of locked in on him. So Ulquiorra has until then to make his move.
So that explains Ulquiorra's window of opportunity. Now I want to talk about Orihime, prefacing this by making it clear that I really do believe that Orihime loves Ichigo in a real and pure way. Even if nothing romantic ever came to fruition between them, she would still love him. She would just adjust her expectations to be satisfied with whatever he was willing to offer her. If that means all he was ever willing to offer her was friendship, she would take it and take the necessary steps to adjust her expectations to conform to his boundaries. That's just part of growing up.
What we haven't talked about is how Orihime would change based on different circumstances than those set forth in canon.
So imagine, Orihime is quietly biding her time, patiently waiting for Ichigo to realize what his dick is for, and otherwise building stronger friendships between herself, him, and their supercool sidekicks. She's strengthening her powers, learning a lot about herself, and gaining self-confidence. She's having fun and saving the world. Her plate is pretty full.
Despite all this fulfilling growth, Orihime still faces a deep, overwhelming struggle with loneliness. She has grown up abused and neglected. Her darkest traumas have less to do with hollows and more to do with knowing her parents never loved her. She will always have anxiety gnawing at her, which won't be blunted until she feels like she has the kind of love that lasts forever.
Now, of course, she has her hopes pinned on good ol' Kurosaki-kun for this purpose, but that doesn't mean that no one could ever take his place. Also, I don't for one minute believe that Orihime is so pure of heart and innocent of mind that she doesn't think about sex and love (which she sees as two inseparable sides of the same coin insofar as it relates to her) any less than a typical teenager. To the contrary, I think she is probably more curious about it than most of her peers, in large part because of her trauma.
However, Orihime has not gotten to where she is - top three in her class, healthy, and maintaining her own household as a teenager on a small budget - if she wasn't mature and world-wise for her age. She doesn't always come across that way, but she knows how to manage her needs and wants. She also knows how to keep a healthy distance between herself and those who might want to take advantage of her, because, let's face it, she could be a very easy target.
This is why, in Bleach canon, no one ever got between her and Ichigo. Because although she had a lot of admirers, none of them were worth her consideration. None of them had history with her. None of them understood her special powers. None of them knew her weaknesses and traumas. Only her small circle of supernatural besties knew her well enough and had enough of her trust to consider a relationship with, and of those three boys, Orihime was only attracted to Ichigo. Besides, Ishida and Chad would never think to get in between Orihime and Ichigo.
But Ulquiorra would.
If he returned, he would need her. He would provide her with the attention she craves and the fascination that gives her the confidence she would need to turn her attention away from Ichigo. She would not be able to deny that she and Ulquiorra share a strength of connection on par with that of her and her nakama.
She would hesitate for a only a moment before deciding to do whatever she could to assist Ulquiorra in adjusting to his new life. It would be a very significant reunion, initially, but then reality would creep in.
Ulquiorra requires work to find a place in his new reality. Orihime is not afraid of hard work, but undertaking Ulquiorra's rehabilitation would not be all sunshine and roses. He doesn't just follow her advice like some kind of lost puppy, either. He can be stubborn and confrontational. She would be forced to examine and explain things she takes for granted.
This process would make her question much of her previous beliefs, just as he questioned his beliefs about the heart when they were together in Hueco Mundo. He would make her feel like she had value in her ability to teach him things about the world.
Although he would not bicker or put her down for sport, he would frustrate and challenge her. He would make her assert herself. It would reignite the chemistry between them that she was too terrified in Hueco Mundo to recognize.
Orihime would focus on Ulquiorra so much that she would not notice her attention drifting away from Ichigo until it was too late. By that time, she would realize that Ichigo is not the be-all-end-all romantic target she had previously thought.
When she eventually realizes she is attracted to Ulquiorra, it would not be a spark, it would be spontaneous combustion. They wouldn't spend a lot of time being cute and flirting and wooing one another. She would realize that she wants him, and it would happen pretty fast. I feel like either she would make a first tentative move and he would reciprocate, or it would just be like a mutual realization and he would make a move and she would just melt into it and match his energy.
I think both Orihime and Ulquiorra don't really have a clear idea of love and sex as separate concepts. She would conflate the two as one thing, and he really doesn't conceptualize either of them, rather just experiences them and then later accepts them as a singular expression. Their relationship would be very, very physical. Over time they would both start to appreciate the more delicate and complex flavors of both love and sex, and would begin to enjoy just being affectionate and quiet companionship and all the other lovely parts of being in a relationship.
I think that if they were able to reproduce, they would find themselves relatively young parents, because they can't keep their hands to themselves and would let passion carry them away in the heat of the moment. Ulquiorra would be obnoxiously proud to have successfully made a new life with "the woman".
I could go on and on and on about these two. I'll stop here for now, but feel free to ask anything else!

Hi Fourangers,
First of all, I love your blog so much. It's like going through a history back when Naruto Manga chapters were released weekly and your reviews were so Golden, Hilarious and spot-on. Am a new fan though (especially an SNS fan), I just got into this fandom only this year. I don't know if you'll answer my ask, but I just wanted to try and ask you few questions and I pray that you might answer me....
1. Since you've written in a post that you were active in the eastern part of the fandom, How was chapter 698 received in Japan? Because this is the chapter I inherently realized they both love each other. Yeah, I was too late but somehow whenever they interact with each other in previous chapters I always find them to be 'Weird' for just to be friends. Chapter 698 is just blatantly obvious that they love each other. Considering Homophobia and Shounen genre, I have no idea how it was perceived over there back then in 2014.
2. Which scene made you to ship SNS?
3. As an SNS'er how do you feel about the ending, where everyone was married off when they were just 19 just to make some shitty sequel??? As a new fan, I felt betrayed and It would've been perfect if they had stopped at chapter 699, leaving an open ending.
4. How do you face with the accusation about Naruto and Sasuke as brothers and we, SNS'ers are Incest shippers??? I don't care about that Indra and Ashura thing. But Naruto himself told he considers Sasuke as his Brother couple of times. And in Chapter 699, Sasuke acknowledged, 'He finally understood what it meant'.... It's the only thing that confuses me and I don't even have an answer!!! Plus, Kishi himself gave an interview that he based Sasuke on his Brother... I really wonder how he gave such an interview when he literally made them wear necklaces with each other's faces.
5. How was Naruto and Sasuke's sexuality perceived in the fandom back then??? Man!! Kishimoto just made lot of comic reliefs on their sexuality by making Sasuke on Sai jutsu, Naruto not interested in Icha Icha but making Reverse Harem no Jutsu, Naruto was angry when Konohamaru made Boy on Boy jutsu whereas he had no problem with him doing it. LOL. And all those homoerotic posters. What do you think about their sexuality, personally??
6. Why did Kishi had to develop their bond as Soulmates with some unintentional or intentional romantic undertones, if he was eventually going to pair them up with girls??? He easily could've gave many such romantic tropes to other girls and keep the bond between N and S as purely friendship or brothers. It still would've made sense.
7. Final one, Was Naruto really Nosebleeding when Kurama made a joke about Sasuke's kiss in Chapter 572???? We had a lot of heated discussion with other shippers where they claim that it was just a splotch of snot.
Sorry for the lengthy ask....... I am so eager to know your answers and I don't want to spam your ask box by sending multiple asks.
Thanks 😊😊😊
Hey yo! Welcome new SNS fan! I'm so glad that you joined us and I'll try to answer as best as I can. I'm not very active here on tumblr (except browsing lol) but your ask was such a delight to read.
1. I honestly don't remember. I think I didn't follow the japanese boards until the eventual 699-700 disaster. People were craving for reactions and I was curious about it too lol. And well...it's been years, I doubt I'll be able to find the reactions from that time. Imo, most readers don't care much about pairings, they just wanted to read about power-ups and abilities and the basic Naruto Vs Sasuke. Though there are some backhanded jokes about how gay Naruto is for Sasuke.
2. Hah. It's going to be very anti-climatic but it was when Naruto and Sakura were eating in Ichiraku Ramen. Naruto just used Rasenshuriken against Kakuzu and he busted his arm. Sakura was healing his arm and her attention was focused on Naruto. I used to be a NaruSaku shipper so I thought "Oh hey! This is the moment that Naruto would have a candid romantic moment!" But nope. He talked about Sasuke. And I was already getting suspicious about Sasuke's feelings towards Naruto ya know? And the whole "SASUKE IS MIINEEEEEE" in Orochimaru's lair. It was that moment I thought "you only have Sasuke in your head don't you, Naruto?" and started shipping SNS.
3. Hooo boy was I surprised when it was suddenly revealed that they had the basic heteronormative, boring marriage with bunch of clones of themselves. Everyone thought that it was almost like a bad fanfiction come true and some thought that it was fake. It was a pandemonium lolololol. I also thought that it was too lame to be true and lo and behold, when it came true I was floored. And then whenever Kishimoto threw new material, I got insanely pissed off because S*arada and B*ruto becoming pairing material is ok because they are a girl and a boy, and then they paralleled with Naruto and Sasuke which are only FRIENDS because they are both men. ARGH. Open ending was what Kishimoto planned from the very beginning but wrote a sequel to earn more money.
In that aspect, I made peace with it because of the whole anime/manga industry. I learned that, as a mangaka, you don't earn a lot of money with selling books, but rather with merchandise and profiting with sales right. And that guy have a family to raise, have two kids (which is hilarious about how B*ruto movie is his self-insert story), he needs a steady income. Also, I read reports about how anime studios are so poor and animators don't receive a decent income not to mention they are overstaffed and tired, and B*ruto is a good money cow for them to earn money so they can invest later on other anime they have more passion about it. So even though I hate this story with a strength of thousands suns, they are putting meal on people's tables and making them pay rents. I'm ok.
4. Lemme roll my eyes because in the Last movie they said that Hinata is related to Kaguya and so is the Uzumaki and Uchiha clan so they are all related woo hoo. But in the aspect of brothers because reincarnations bla bla bla, didn't Naruto himself said that he's no longer that brother, he's himself? Hmm...I gotta re-read it. One day. Maybe. lol. But I'm sure that he said "Sasuke is not my brother but I'm sure we'll understand well as friends" so there. Honestly, there are a lot of interviews out there and a lot of them are fake, so I'd always take the interviews with a grain of salt lololol. I do know from artbooks that Kishimoto wanted to create Sasuke as a rival-esque character and that was it. As he was developing Sasuke and Naruto's relationship, since he liked the whole yin-yang concept, whenever he wrote Naruto's story, Sasuke's was developed at the same time as his shadow.
5. I can tell from Naruto Forums (I used to participate back in that day) MOST of the non-shippers thought it was gay as hell, but you know...it was a relic of that time. While they thought it was gay, they didn't put too much thought about you know? Because it was shounen, and we knew that it was a joke that it couldn't be taken seriously. Of course, in the SNS fandom, we did make more analysis and there were a lot of instance when Naruto and Sasuke's sexuality was questioned. Some other non-shippers also thought that Naruto was totes gay for Sasuke (including a IRL friend).
Imo, Naruto is definitely bisexual in my view. Sasuke I think he's asexual or gay. He's attracted to Naruto, but mostly because of his connection to him, not because of his physical attributes, so yeah...asexual. Or Pansexual. Sasuke is more complicated lmao. Imo, Naruto could be pansexual too, come to think about it. Yeah, I guess both being pansexual can be valid.
6. He developed Naruto and Sasuke being soulmates from the very beginning, that was proven in his comments in artbooks and in the manga. He probably created with the intention of making it purely platonic, going beyond physical ties. Then he shot himself on the foot by drawing Naruto thinking about Sasuke on bed, talking about how Sasuke is cool, meanwhile Sasuke waxing poetic about how Naruto saved him. What gives? Lol. Yeah, I think he got too enamored writing their relationship that he didn't have time to write romantic ones. What I noticed that Sakura's popularity never was really high, so I could see some editors putting their fingers all over it and making her less relevant. Also, Kishimoto didn't know how to handle her, so when she got her time to shine was the whole fake confession disaster. Coupled with Kishimoto sexism and, in his words (Kurenai's flashback), women are useful to spout more babies, women was never really relevant in his story, unfortunately. Even Kaguya who was technically the big bad boss, was never really fleshed out in comparison to Madara. So the null het romantic moments it's not because he wanted to elevate SNS moments, it's more about how he's incompetent about it. It's either Hinata slowly elevating to a relevant status because forced interaction (Pain's sacrifice and Neji's death) or Sakura being obligated to be pining over Sasuke because she's a girl. It's even more painful to see that, if we ignore B*ruto, both girls are shown to be just talking with their kids and dusting shelves, basically being housewives, even though thorough the story (especially Sakura) it was implied that both of them have much more potential than being their husband accessories.
7. It was a splotch of snot. I can confirm myself lol. Whenever the chapter is out and fans would scan it to scanlate it, the editor usually would amp up contrast to max. So usually the lines get much more thicker than usual, when you read the official release which gets straight from the source, you can notice how the lines are more delicate.
Oh lol...but then we also have a lot of controversy about translating style. THAT one is a whole new can of worms to open.
Man I had fun answering your questions! Please send more :P

Paintings & Picture frames. [Pt.6]

Daryl Dixon x reader [Pt.1] [Pt.2] [Pt.3] [Pt.4] [Pt.5] [Pt.7]
Daryl rode onto the shop’s grounds and parked his bike at his workstation, going into the back of the storage to find all the parts he was looking for. he quickly found everything he needed and had all his tools set aside when he spotted an old bike they bought once for parts with a double seat. He immediately went over to the head mechanic and almost stumbled on this way  to ask if he could have it.
To his luck he was allowed to take it, as long as he'd managed to put it on his bike by himself since the place was currently booked enough for everyone to have their hands full, but not full enough to have Daryl take time off school to come work outside of his usual days. Now that he had a day off he finally had some time to work on his own bike again after too long of not tinkering away at it. After a while of working and drawing out how he was gonna have to change up certain parts to make the seat fit he got tapped on the shoulder. "Brought you some coffee. You've been working non stop, drink something, dude." Daryl accepted the coffee and they sat down for a break together. They talked for a bit on their current projects and how Daryl's new study was going.
"So, who's that new seat for? Cute classmate? You should bring her sometime." He teased his awkward coworker in the most friendly way. He knew Daryl had a bad temper when it came to things like this but he had found a way to work around it most of the time. It also helped that he was basically Daryl's best friend in the workplace and they always helped each other out when they needed. Daryl's mind quickly went to him picking you up from home and driving you to school whenever you had the same hours. He told his friend it was gonna be easier that way to have someone ride with him to photo locations. He wasn't gonna admit the little crush he had on the girl that cursed at him until he admitted defeat and agreed to being her project partner. Before he could say more, Sam left to go back to his own workstation again. Daryl checked his phone seeing it was past 1PM and decided to clean up and head out to grab a coffee to go for the two of you before heading over to your place.
After you both had finished your drinks you grabbed Daryl's laptop and started working on the last two parts of the paper, quickly getting those parts written down and edited to make everything fit together nicely. When you had all the text put down you agreed you had to add something extra to make it look like an art college paper, so you went to dig though your art folder and take some photos of your works to add in the first day parts, then looking through Daryl's photographs of the second day to put in the corresponding paper parts. While you were digging thought the photos something caught your eye and without thinking twice clicked on it. It was a photo of you in the diner while you were serving one of the local customers exchanging a sweet smile. You hadn't even realised Daryl took any photos that day. Did he have any more? Was he gonna tell you? "This looks nice, why didn't you show me?" Daryl wasn't feeling confident at all about getting caught taking your photos and not even a compliment wasn't gonna help that this time. "Didn't wanna bother ya on yer job." was the best answer he could come up with quick enough without having to admit he liked how you looked in your work uniform because that would only make him sound like a creep just like his brother and that was the last thing he'd want. He wanted you to like him on your own terms, not because he would throw offhanded compliments and buy your affection or whatever Merle would do to get girls to like him.
He happily talked to you about the differences in lighting and their effects on your skin tone or how it made the led lights in the background pop. While he talked you casually typed along, adding another small section about things you learned from each other. You added the two pictures and stated you approved of these pictures being taken. Your teachers didn't have to know they were taken without your knowledge. "Do ya mind if I go for a smoke?" Daryl asked, thinking it'd be alright since you'd been around him smoking multiple times and you'd never made an issue about it. "Yeah sure, you can use the balcony. Come on, I'll show you." You got up and showed him your apartment's balcony. It held a couple of plants, a simple chair and some clotheslines. "Ya don't smoke, do ya?" Daryl spotted the ashtray on the armrest of the chair. "Nah, I had it laying around and decided to put it here in case we were gonna work at my place." You offered him the space and went into the kitchen, digging around for snacks and some new drinks, quickly asking what Daryl would like and put the drinks on the table where you worked, together with some snacks.
Daryl walked back in after his smoke and saw the table set with snacks and new drinks and things started to feel weird again. Not a bad weird, but a this-is-new kind of weird. He liked this new-weird. "Wow, thanks." He said surprised as he sat back down, checking what you were doing. You were adding small info text lines to all the photos lie they usually are added to pictures in artbooks. "How do ya make all of tha' look so nice all the time?" normally when he'd make anything for school it was badly edited, rushed and never had any pictures so nicely added into everything. All plain and boring, just enough to get a grade worth getting and nothing more. You looked at him with a questioning look. "You mean the pictures? It's nothing, just simple editing really." Getting shy all of a sudden, you made some typos and messed up some of the page's layout but quickly fixed it as you got your mind back on track. How was it that a simple compliment got you so ..weird?

I wish I could be happy, but I’m not
(I made a thread of this on Twitter this morning, but I’m going to elaborate on it here because as you’ll see in a different sense on this post, character limits are BS)
So I'm not gonna lie, I think the line about Clover that many in my neck of the fandom are getting excited over isn't the loving acknowledgment of how Qrow felt about Clover that many seem to think it is.
Follow me on this one:
Is it good that Clover was finally explicitly brought up? Yes.
Did they do it in a terrible way? YUP, and I'll explain how in just a moment.
Am I surprised? Less than I ever wanted to be.
Actually, before I begin, because I KNOW people are gonna come after me for this post one way or another, I just want to ask those people if they think I LIKE being this negative? Do they think I LIKE being so cynical towards a show that I used to have so much fun with, a show that I was starting to trust? Don’t you think I want to be excited about Volume 8 with everyone else, and that prior to Volume 7, I wasn’t having the time of my life thinking about and enthusiastically waiting for the new episodes.
No, believe me, I’d be thrilled to enjoy this new volume with everyone else, but after the waking nightmare that was 7X12 (An episode that keeps getting worse and worse the more you look at it, as if an evil version of a Where’s Waldo artbook), CRWBY made it pretty apparent to not trust them as far as I can throw them, to guard my heart, and to temper any positive expectations I have for this show because they can and will likely let me down.
Full disclosure: I’m not watching the volume itself in the traditional sense: I’m having the context of the scenes explained to me by a wonderful friend, and seeing and reading the dialogue and facial expressions of the scenes through gifs, pictures, and the like on various Twitter and Tumblr blogs. That having been said, I take confidence that I am getting an accurate and complete understanding of the Qrow scenes.
Okay, let’s go...under the cut because this got LONG!
The line that starts with "The thing that really stings..." is the line in question, just in case there was any doubt since Qrow speaks a fair bit in this episode (Yes, I’ve read through the full line, but this post is already gonna be long enough without transcribing the whole thing, here it is if you haven’t checked it out yet). It comes up right after Qrow talks about Clover's death.
“The thing that really stings” is a crucial opening line. It implies that on a list of important matters pertaining to the given topic being touched upon, what he’s about to state is the most important of them.
And what does he go on to talk about after that opener?
Semblances. Just semblances, or rather, just his semblance.
Qrow talks about how he was finally entertaining the notion that there was somebody he could be around without having to worry about his semblance complicating things, but that he now believes that possibility was nothing but a childish dream.
This line (which I HOPE is just accidentally clunky because I DO want the Staff Theory to be true so we can start to recover from all this BS in a way that lets me keep enjoying this series) is a lot more harmful to the Fair Game relationship than anyone in the Clover and Fair Game fandom seems to think it is. I genuinely don't want to rain on anyone's parade because I know a large part of my fandom is pretty excited about it, but I can't leave this alone.
I'll be frank: This line implies that Clover's death on it's own (The act of the character of Clover dying, his entire being, personality and all) isn't as important to Qrow as what that death symbolizes. All it does is just talk about how Clover meant he could be around someone and not have his semblance mess things up.
It doesn't discuss the bond they formed over their time in Atlas together. It doesn't discuss how Clover was someone who was addressing his self-loathing and absence of a team or how they cared about each other. These things would imply that Clover meant something to him as a person outside of his semblance.
Now did the paragraph need to go into detail about or even discuss Clover and Qrow’s bond? Not necessarily, but with a line starting with "what really stings" that only on to talk about Clover as he relates to his semblance undercuts what made Clover's character so beloved in the first place.
Clover fans didn't fall in love with Clover because of his semblance. It was an interesting aspect of his character, sure, but it wasn’t the only one by a long shot.
We fell in love with Clover's unique personality, how he was cocky without the pompousness or bullying that tends to come with that cockiness, as well as his emotional softness and how it contrasted with our expectations at every turn, even extending to his support-suiting weapon.
We fell in love with how Clover, even dealing with people he was technically sort of opposed to like Robyn Hill, he made every effort to be diplomatic, careful towards her election, and sincere.
We fell in love with how Clover, unlike the rest of his team, was the notable exception to the rule of the Ace Ops not being friends with their teammates.
We fell in love with the many, many interesting visual aspects of his character design, both individually as well as how closely they mirrored Qrow’s.
We fell in love with the concern he had for Qrow, someone who Qrow was finally on an equal playing field with and could grow to trust as well as willingly and happily team up with.
We fell in love with Clover’s persistence in getting close to him and having Qrow come to a place where he could acknowledge his own worth.
So understand that this line says that the thing about Clover that left the biggest impression on Qrow (And by extension in terms of the show’s meta narrative, the audience) was not that character that we cared for because of who he was, but instead that Qrow cares more about how Clover benefitted him personally on a strictly utilitarian level than the actual connection he and Clover shared as people.
That sentiment does an incredible disservice to Clover's character. Despite what those who defend 7X12 felt, Clover was a character with dimension (And by no means was an Adam, just to stop that garbage comparison in its tracks before it comes up again). What that line does is callously strips away that dimension to make Clover almost something closer to a one-note manic pixie dream boy, and only for the purposes of his semblance, at that.
That’s not good writing, and it shouldn’t be as revered as it presently is (I know the episode’s only a few hours old at the time of writing this, but this seems to be the line’s perception by the Clover and Fair Game fandoms).
More than anything -- more than the possibility of Jailbirds becoming canon, or the lack of connecting Clover and the staff this volume -- this sentiment that Clover’s only worth came from his semblance said by Qrow himself (The character who spent a lot of time bonding with him) makes me worried about whether or not we will actually get a Clover revival.
Again, I don't want to ruin anyone's fun (Though I know I risk it just by making this and will probably be subject to all manner of online torment as a result because that’s just the way things go around here), but I think we Clover fans need to acknowledge the dangerous wording of this line and temper our expectations accordingly.
Today's Clovember theme is 'wish.' I'm not gonna stop wishing for Clover's return. I'm not gonna stop hoping for Clover's return, either.
However, I don't want another 7X12 to happen to myself or the various others in the fandom that I’ve grown to care about this past year again. I can’t ignore a bad sign when it’s staring me in the face, leaving such a foul taste in my mouth in the way that this is. Fair Game Buddies and Clover fans alike, please just be careful. I love you all.

OnS Chapter 106
Tumblr media
Well... this chapter is making me ask questions lol. At last though, we’re back to seeing what Mika is doing but is also continuing from where the previous chapter left off. So many things happening at once.
Tumblr media
The 2nd Progenitor Rigr Stafford vs. 3rd Progenitor Lest Karr and 5th Progenitor Ky Luc. Lest is having trouble and is worried due to facing a 2nd progenitor while his companion Ky is enjoying himself and feels confident he could win against a their enemy. Rigr realizes in the middle of battle that Ky is probably Urd's right hand man since Ky's ability surpasses that of a regular 5th progenitor.
Tumblr media
Rigr aims at Ky's eye. Ky realizes he can't dodge it anyways so he just went straight ahead to land an attack himself. Now the two of them are too connected to each other which worried Lest since he's about to use a lightning attack. Ky just tells him to go for it.
Tumblr media
Ky gives his sword as much blood as he could give to make sure Rigr couldn't get away when Lest uses Heaven's Fan. When the attack is done, Ky sustained a lot of injuries.
Tumblr media
It seems the attack had worked and had injured the 2nd progenitor as well. I felt pretty suspicious at this moment cause there’s no way these two could easily beat a 2nd progenitor. Plus Rigr wasn’t really that worried despite saying so cause he doesn’t always mean what he tells them. I thought there must be a trick.
Tumblr media
2nd Progenitor Urd Geales finally makes an appearance! Lest tells him of what had transpired and Urd isn't amused and tells him that it's impossible for a vampire to escape the cell (he made it so himself). He then tells Rigr to stop messing with his subordinates.
Tumblr media
With a clap of the hands, Rigr is back in the cell. Rigr reveals that the entire fight was nothing but an illusion that he learned from humans. lol I knew there was a trick but I didn’t think it was all an illusion. I thought he’d easily regenerate or something.
You know what, Rigr’s teasing nature and laid-back attitude in the middle of battle reminds me of Ferid. They might not be blood-related but he is the one who turned Ferid into a vampire so it’s close.
Tumblr media
The two former friends have a little reunion. Ky apologizes for the trouble but Urd tells him it wasn't his fault as Rigr is of a higher rank and can't be helped.
Tumblr media
It seems he still cares...
Rigr asks Urd what the latter has in store for him and Urd says that if Rigr doesn't answer his questions, he might just kill him. Urd asks what Rigr’s plan is and Rigr tells him that his revenge plan against the 1st Progenitor hasn't changed yet after all these years so there’s nothing to say.
Tumblr media
Urd says that in betraying the 1st, Rigr had also betrayed him and Rigr offered to be killed. He mentions he hasn't forgotten about Urd and has thought about him everyday when they were separated.
I’m sorry... these lines are getting to me. They must’ve been really close friends for them to be this way with each other. They kinda remind me of Mika and Yuu in a way except these two sort of became rivals or something.
Tumblr media
Urd then asked Rigr about this revenge plan and how it's going.
I’m guessing the original question is asking about what the plan is specifically but it’s changed to asking if it’s going well. I wonder if Urd had realized what it might be before asking?
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Mika is still inside Yuu's heart. In front of him is a strange eye and he's trying to figure out what this one is exactly.
Tumblr media
Mika touches the eye to peek into what's in it. He's then transported to this strange place and in each of the containers inside is an eyeball each. Mika finds himself possessing one of these eyeballs.
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who recognized this from the Ancient Greece flashbacks several chapters ago.
Tumblr media
It’s tiny Yuu-chan! It confirmed that this is Mikaela's room from back in Greece thousands of years ago from the flashbacks. Yuu visits here many times to try and wake up the "sleeping" Mika inside the glass. This is probably a later scenario from Ashera’s flashbacks cause this Yuu isn’t borderline emotionless and acts like an excitable child unlike the Yuu that Ashera first met.
Tumblr media
Noya tells him it's pointless as Mika is dead but Yuu tells him that Mika will certainly wake up. It's Yuu's job to wake him after all. Noya comments that Yuu's exact duty is to be the sacrifice to awaken Mika. Yuu didn't hear this and continues to call Mika which annoyed Noya enough and in the end, Yuu was killed.
Okay, so I don’t remember if Yuu had been calling Sika Madu “Father” from before or if this is some new development because I think he just called him “Master” back then? Also, I guess this means Yuu and Mika are connected more deeply than we thought. I wonder how Yuu would be sacrificed.
Tumblr media
Noya then uses one of the eyeballs and turned it into another Yuu. The new Yuu could talk but knows nothing. He kept asking so many questions that Noya got annoyed again and killed this one, too. Ashera tells him that it's not right and Noya just says that he just has to get used to it. Plus no one would notice how many had been killed if they made another Yuu.
We’re finally shown how they make Yuu-chan clones. I wonder what changed or how this is done as the new Yuu clone acts like the previous one: loud and excited. He’s totally not like the Yuu that Ashera met who is quiet and sort of emotionless. I thought they would start out like that quiet Yuu first and then learn to be normal but it seems the clones are more like the new version of Yuu.
Tumblr media
The next Yuu Noya had created is the one Mika is currently possessing. Of course, this “Yuu” wouldn’t act the same as the others since Mika is possessing it. Noya didn’t question this or at least, he seems to not and just leaves this Yuu be.
So either he’s just faking and realized that there’s something really different (as that look is suggesting) or the personality of the Yuu-chan clones differ from one another that this is a possibility. Also, since Yuu-chan is a clone, who was he cloned from? Was there an original Yuu-chan? What was he then? So many questions...
Tumblr media
The 1st Progenitor and the others have arrived. Raimei scolds the kids for entering the room without permission but Byakko just tells her to go easy on them as they're just kids.
The group (minus the 1st Progenitor) looks like their demon selves: from the outfits to the horns). Does this mean they’ve been turned to demons at this point? Also, Byakko’s personality doesn’t look as serious as he seems as he currently is as Byakkomaru. By the way, I don’t think I’ve ever heard their original names being used so not sure if these are right. I got them from the wiki when I was looking at the correct name spellings for the other characters.
Tumblr media
Back to the present, Rigr offers Urd the choice to join him in revenge. Rigr tells them that his preparations are ready and apologizes for taking too long with it. He asks Urd if the latter has any hostages and it's revealed that the people Urd was carrying earlier are Shinya and Kureto and so Rigr asked about their demons (which are their former vampire companions).
This is making me wonder what Urd’s plan is. At first of course I thought he’s asking Rigr about this revenge thing cause he wants to know if he could stop it or change Rigr’s mind. But now I’m confused cause the way he’s asking seems like he’s... interested? And Rigr asked about hostages which Urd already has and coincidentally (or not...?) they are Shinya and Kureto who are the contractors of Byakkomaru and Raimeiki. Rigr even asked about the demons.
Like if Urd turned out to switch sides and becomes Rigr’s ally, I don’t think I’d be surprised. The current arc is just everybody switching sides and backstabbing everyone else or having ulterior motives in the stuff they do. How many opposing groups do we even have now lol.
Tumblr media
Switching back to the past, Mika continues to observe the others through the clone Yuu. Sika Madu seem to have realized what he really is though and addresses him directly.
I’m betting this is the real Sika Madu cause he’s already left Shinoa. Plus if his other demon companions could go to another demon’s world, there’s no doubt he could do it, too since he’s the most powerful of them all.
Tumblr media
Sika Madu tries to put Mika to sleep. A struggling Mika hears Yuu's voice telling him that in order to escape they must work together. If they devour one another, Mika would become Yuu's demon. As Sika Madu continues to use his powers on Mika, Mika finally accepts and lets himself become Yuu's demon.
--
Finally! I guess if this goes well (which there’s a high chance this would go well unless the author decides to prolong the drama), Mika would finally become a demon weapon. it’s also another sword if I remember correctly. I wonder if Yuu will use it now that Asuramaru can’t be trusted? Speaking of which, I suddenly remembered the cover art for one of Owari no Seraph’s artbooks wherein Yuu is shown with his sword and the reflection in it is Mika. Foreshadowing or coincidence? Probably coincidence since it’s the reverse in another artbook. Still it’s cool.
The Vampire side of the story is slowly connecting to the protagonists’ side of the story. It looks like whatever it is that Rigr is planning, it’ll involve the demons residing in a majority of the main casts’ weapons. They’d cross paths sooner or later.
Shinya and Kureto got caught but where are the others? Where are the rest of Guren’s squad? I wonder who the demons are that’s inside of the weapons of the others...
I’m still sad they chose not to use the nickname Mika had for Yuu. “Yuu-chan” is distinctly Mika’s nickname for him (it’s even Mika’s favorite phrase according to one of the fanbooks haha). Plus since they never use any honorifics for the way everyone else calls Yuu (Yoichi’s “Yuu-kun” and Shinoa’s “Yuu-san” are just “Yuu/Yu” now), there’s no difference. Mika calling Yuu by a specific nickname even became a plot point when one of the human soldiers trusted Mika because of how he calls Yuu. Like, I get why they’re not using honorifics in the official translation but it’s still a shame. Now everytime I see Mika call Yuu or refer to Yuu, my mind fills in the missing honorific. It will always be “Yuu-chan” to me.
Anyways, the last page of this chapter never said when the next one would come out. I wonder why? I’m hoping it’s not a hiatus but it can’t be helped if it is. I’m kinda excited for what’s to come next. I wonder what happened to everyone else? Are we ever gonna get POVs from them or are they also just left to the side since they’re not part of the main conflict? I mean they seemed to have completely dropped Narumi since I haven’t seen him in a while.
Thanks for reading this if you did!
