Happy Birthday, Fuuta! (~600 word yap session about T3 Fuuta predictions + phoenix symbolism under the cut because I am incredibly excited for his birthday TL and have English this semester.)

To establish some background, Fuuta is described as “good-hearted” on the wiki page, and in the past he has stated he cares for Haruka, but usually when we see him he’s just being an asshole (or “caring” in strange ways like… offering Mahiru a tomato on her birthday???)

But in the TL since his 2023 TL with Amane and her preaching to him, we have actually seen Fuuta being OVERTLY caring. Although he may have always been good-hearted deep down, he’s always been a pretty big asshole on the surface so it’s still a massive change for him.

Putting these two TLs side by side, we can also see his tone has visibly changed - he’s referring to Mahiru by name (I don’t think he’s ever done so before in any TL 😭), and he’s a lot more hesitant, soft spoken, and thoughtful.

I think his mannerisms stem partly from Amane’s influence, but also from the remnants of his desire to act as a “hero”. With those combined, Fuuta is likely letting his kinder side show more often as a means for “salvation” - namely being forgiven, essentially “repenting for his sins”. 

Now, what happens now that he IS forgiven? Fuuta’s primary symbol is fire, which can be likened to his strong beliefs. In T2 this “fire” in him is slowly withering out, yet also being replaced by… whatever this new “salvation” thing is. The purpose of the voting in Trial 1 and 2 is to affirm/deny the prisoner’s beliefs, so this new fire - his new beliefs - are being metaphorically reignited.

That’s where the phoenix symbolism comes in. We also see him literally burning to ashes in Backdraft, potentially representing the death of his former self.

And what rises from the ashes? The phoenix, obviously! Phoenixes are known to resurrect themselves after death, in some interpretations dying by their own fire, bearing similarities to Fuuta being burnt by his own “fire” in Backdraft. With his forgiven vote, a new kind of fire may be ignited within him hence the rebirth of the phoenix.

This is a stretch, but fun fact: the Chinese phoenix, mostly used in Eastern mythology, is denoted by the characters 鳳凰 (Fènghuáng) with etymology related to the character for wind… which happens to be in the Kanji for Fuuta’s name (風汰 or Fēngtài in Chinese pinyin).

Phoenixes are also like angels but with fire. This isn’t a well-researched point, it’s just that Amane has angel symbolism/wings in Magic and wings combined with Fuuta’s fire symbolism is just a phoenix. Yeah.

With all that being said… Happy birthday, Fuuta. Today is certainly a good day to be reborn.

You unlocked the car door getting in the passengers seat and sitting down. Before you had left the car you set up your phone and started recording.

“Here’s your food.” You say, handing it to your very hungry girlfriend. “Thank youu” She says excitedly ripping the bag open. You just sit there waiting for her to realize you don’t have any food.

“You didn’t get anything?” She asks confused since you were just complaining about how hungry you were. Which wasn’t a lie.

“No I didn’t have enough so I just got you something.” You say sweetly. KK looks at you, trying to process what you just said. “What do you mean?” She asks still very confused.

“I only had like $15 and yours came up to $13.75 so I just got you something.” You explain. She just looks at you dumbfounded. “Baby..” She starts but then stops herself trying to find the correct response. “First of all..” She says smacking her lips like she always does, “You have way more than $15 in your bank account.” She says putting up her thumb. “Second, that makes no sense.” She continues putting up her pointer finger. “And third you could’ve just asked me for some money.” She says putting up her middle finger.

You couldn’t help but laugh at your girlfriends sassiness. “Whats so funny?” She asks genuinely confused. “Cause ain’t no way you only have $15 baby” She says laughing with you. “It’s a prank” You say through wheezes.

You pick up your phone and show your recording. She just rolls her eyes in response and continues to eat her food.

Okay okay, I saw edits of Scar and some parts of the beta story with him in it, and I just can't. I'm sorry, he is so insane to the point I’m insane. Let’s just get into this.

From what I’ve seen he’s so flirty but so cruel at the same time, almost making his violent words feel almost romantic but even more threatening, all with a smile on his face. For him, it’s a random Tuesday; for you, it is the most traumatic moment of your life (if he’d even let off with your life.)

he’s so into you though, every time you fight with each other he’s enjoying it like it’s some sort of sport, it makes him feel really good.

If you hate his guts, it just gets him going. Especially the way you look at him with such hatred and disgust, would you make that face if he had you pinned down with your weapon to your throat? (or if he kissed you?).

I’m on my enemies to lovers strike people! Like, imagine you’re all serious and everything he just wants to take your insanity away and see the anger rush through your serious expression.

Dmc 3 Dantes design is AMAZING in a storytelling aspect but does NOT work outside of dmc3 AND I’M SICK OF SEEING IT USED IN CROSSOVER MEDIAS !!!!!!

Long ass yap under cut

Dante has always been one for over the top outfits and designs. In the dmc1 novel one of the first sentences is talking about how Dante is flamboyant. At the end of dmc3 we see he has his dmc1 outfit on with all the layers and vest and everything. NOT shirtless.

At the start of dmc3 bro was getting out of the shower, like you hear the water and the shower faucet. You see the water droplets and steam coming off of Dante. And when he answers the phone he says the shop isn’t open yet. Dude was having a lazy day.

Dante did not have time to put on a shirt, he wasn’t planning on going out anywhere or doing anything, he was just eating pizza and chilling. I see SO MANY people (including cannon media like the dmc3 manga) just assume he regularly does not wear a shirt…. like he does! he just didn’t have time to put one on before Arkhams bitchass showed up with his demons.

Don’t even get me started on those pants…. light brown has never been a part of Dante’s color scheme so light brown pants definitely seem weird right? Also he had no belt despite clearly needing one.

Like look at this render, you can see how far his hip is from his pants. He probably just threw on some old pair without thinking about it. And with no belt too, every other version of Dante has at LEAST one belt. So seeing Dante in light brown pants, alone with no belt is definitely strange.

Yet it WORKS SO WELL for the overall design in 3. Reducing the amount of black in his color scheme to better focus on the red and establish him as a much lighter character compared to Vergil ties in perfectly with the dark reflection trope Vergil and Dante play into.

The most iconic thing about Dantes design has always been that red coat. No argument there. So taking away the rest of Dantes more extravagant parts of his design to better focus on the coat is perfect especially for dmc3. Another thing that ties back into the dark reflection trope of Dantes and Vergil is that cutting down on Dantes design makes Vergil and Dantes personalities reflect in their designs so much more. Vergil is very well kept, with a much more complicated outfit and slicked back hair. So Dante being the opposite of that with a lack of shirt, pants that don’t match, no belt, etc. (while still being flamboyant with that red coat) shows their differences in maturity.

You look at this guy and you KNOW he put so much time and effort into his look. He exudes elegance and effort. Meanwhile Dante’s just thrown on a coat and called it a day.

My point is. This design is great for the storytelling aspect of dmc3 as well as the symbolism and metaphors in dmc3. However, we know Dante doesn’t usually dress like this. He wears shirts. So I get personally annoyed when I see Dante portrayed as that one dude who never wears a shirt. I head cannon that around the shop when he has nothing planned he won’t wear a shirt (saves money on the water bill cuz less laundry) but if he plans to go out or have the shop open or whatever, he’s putting on the full fit. Shirt, belt, coat, and plenty of other accessories.

Also here’s the second paragraph from the dmc1 novel cuz I just love how he’s described not only as flamboyant but also adorned with a lot of jewelry:
