I'm not very good at mmos but I love final fantasy, do you have any tips or advice? Your character is cute!
i don't actually know much about a good chunk of the game- i'm only at early heavensward context (the second expansion) so take my advice with a tiny pinch of salt.
having said that, sure, i can try to give advice! also please note that ffxiv is my first final fantasy game, but i'm experienced with mmos, so it's like... the opposite outlook.
if you look up literally anything about ffxiv, it'll be veterans saying that the current base game (a realm reborn) is slow and largely boring. i disagree for a number of reasons, but... it certainly does drag on for awhile. as i said, i don't know how this compares to other games in the franchise, but this one is a slowburn- well worth the payoff, but still slow as hell.
a single character can play all of the classes! this means, for example, rigel (my oc-turned-player-character) can be a black mage, white mage, warrior, dark knight, ninja... basically, alts (mmo-speak for alternate characters, basically any character you create and play outside of your "main") are effectively useless, but still fun to do if you don't mind a grind.
for the sake of all that is holy, when you unlock a job quest, drop everything and do it. these almost always give new abilities that become an essential part of your toolkit, and when they don't, they're leading up to one. i don't care if you're about to do a main story quest and think you can pass by without it, just do it and save yourself the trouble later.
you get your first mount at level 20, the grand company chocobo. however, due to the stupid amount of exp early quests give you/depending on if you're in a favored server or not, you'll likely be far above that when you finally get your bird. rigel was around 27 when he got bird-riding rights. said rights are tied to the main story quests, as is everything, so make sure to do those too.
red mage is really really fun i highly recommend it
at early levels the 2.5 second gcd (global cooldown, a timer where you can't use any abilities for a period of time) will seem agonizing. it gets better. by level 50 as a black mage i felt like it was too short.
i don't know how to navigate square enix's terrible site but be warned it is certainly something that needs mental preparation before attempting. buying this game is a nightmare.
so don't! the free trial goes up to level 60 and includes the entirety of the first and second expansions (first is actually the base game but that's a whole other can of worms) and lasts indefinitely. you can be a free trial player for years and never stop. just be warned that once you buy the game you can't return to free-trial status so once ur sins are committed, they're committed for good.
love yourself. don't play a healer class. or do, if you're into masochism.
housing is a fucking NIGHTMARE i haven't touched it with a ten foot pole
you can use FATES (open-world multiplayer events, basically) to grind extra classes in a pinch. it's not much, but you can do it.
you know that starting mount i mentioned? the grand company chocobo? you can nickname it. and dress it up. and change its colors. and eventually summon it to fight alongside you as a bird pet/companion/best friend and legitimately why would you use any other mount
seriously rigel's bird is named luhmel and i cherish him SO much i spent all my gil on outfits for him birb my BELOVED
i'd honestly recommend ignoring the gold/normal sidequests after the first few levels- they usually don't offer much, and don't give much back. it's only worth doing the blue "plus" quests (which always unlock something for you/your character) and the main story quests (which. are main story, lol. they're marked with a fire symbol around the edge of the icon)
oh hey whatcha know your job quests are blue plus quests maybe that means something
if you want to take Aesthetic Screenshots™ there's a thing called group pose (aka gpose) that you can use to loop an emote and modify lighting and everything to make some really nice pictures. i haven't used it much because i unironically discovered it two hours ago but i sure will use it in the future
once/if you hit levels 50/60/70, you should start hoarding poetics/tombestones! these can be used to buy fresh new gear that not only looks stylish but also will legitimately last you for half of the next expansion. i'm not joking. these are absolutely worth the investment.
if you play lalafell you WILL be pat on the head. it's normal. let it happen.
y'shtola best girl
new players are called sprouts, and are given a little sprout icon beside their name to represent that! this actually stays for a while- 168 total hours played and completion of stormblood (3rd expansion), iirc. i'm still a sprout. rigel's a little sprout boy.
once you unlock the waking sands, i highly recommend going into the side room and talking to all the npcs there! they have different/new dialogue every time the main story quests tell you to return there, and getting to know them all... well, let's just say that it'll make some parts hit harder, y'know? it pays off.
i haven't personally done them but i've heard the hildibrad sidequests are really funny i recommend those
there's a gambling cactus to gamble your life away and the parkour minigame infuriates me beyond reasonable definition
the community as a whole is super nice, and way better at giving advice on the spot than i am! for an anime game where i can play my depressed edgy angsty angel boy as a walking disaster gay catboy, it's really wholesome. not for everyone, but definitely a good time if it is your kinda thing.
okay but seriously do your class/job quests

Zineth
Arcane Kids - PC - 2012
Tumblr media
Zineth was an experimental student game that was originally supposed to be a proof of concept but instead turned into what it is now, which is maybe the length of a traditional game demo and one of my top n games of the 2010s. people compare it to Jet Set Radio because it’s cel shaded and has wallriding and rollerskates, but it doesn't have as much tricks or graffiti. it does have incredible high speeds, a bunch of quests and secrets, a brilliant rewind feature and the best "pause" menu of all time.
Tumblr media
this game takes place in a wasteland where society has collapsed after everyone got absorbed with a mobile game, and now they all get their information about everything from zines. you play as a zine delivery guy and the "main line" missions involve you getting zines to folks around the city. the quests are technically the main gameplay but they take a back seat to going fast and looking around at the neon post-apocalypse while listening to the high-speed experimental soundtrack. there's only 13 missions, most of which are time trials on little courses within the open world. the only "hard" one is the last one, get to the moon, which can be done the intended way by beating a bird at Zineth's version of Pokemon Go. (this game has a version of Pokemon Go, by the way, with a bit more depth to its combat. a lot more, actually, normal Pokemon Go combat is boring. I like this game's version of it better.) there are also dozens of people to beat at that game, cash so you can upgrade your monsters, and lots of secret zine pages to find.
Tumblr media
but the main focus is really speed. there's a nice big speedometer up in the corner to tell you how fast you're going. you can wallride and grind rails to build speed and you gain it a lot faster than you lose it, so it's very possible to get your speed to the hundreds, at least until you crash into a wall and lose it all instantly. it’s also easy to whiff a jump when you’re moving that fast. the devs knew this wasn't fun so they added an awesome rewind feature that lets you go to whatever point you want from the last several seconds and continue from there with all your speed! the cityscapes of Zineth are fun to explore at any reasonable velocity because in most areas you can either start gaining speed or continue to build it with the help of rewind.
Tumblr media
I never expected myself to be able to write an entire paragraph about a pause menu in a video game of all things but this one is seriously remarkable, I promise. instead of covering the screen like many do, regardless of whether they actually stop the motion of the game, Zineth's menu is relegated to a phone on the side of the screen that leaves most of your view open. its menus get the entire right stick instead of giving any kind of camera control — which is alright because there aren't any precision jumps that you'd want to turn the camera for — so you always have full access to it even while moving. that's what makes this menu so great, how you can use every part of it while playing the actual game. most menus in it are radial, which makes them much faster and more elegant than scrolling through options. just like in real life, it's kinda hard to go hundreds of miles per hour while looking at your phone without crashing, so if you want the game to stop moving, you can just use the rewind feature. also, it has Twitter! I don't know how to use it, and I don't think you can anymore, but Zineth's phone has real actual Twitter. (Team Reptile's upcoming Bomb Rush Cyberfunk seems to like the phone UI too!)
Tumblr media
the developers Arcane Kids have been silent for years now, but they had an excellent run. maybe I'll write about their other games at some point. Zineth is free on PC — well, it was, but all official downloads are now dead, so here's a link to it at archive.org instead. this game is way, way better with a controller, so use one of those if you have it, but if not it's still worth playing on keyboard. definitely try it out.
(P.S. for those wishing to use online multiplayer, the IP you enter when you want to start a server is your EXTERNAL IP, not your internal like all the other games. and you have to port forward, just like if you’re starting a Minecraft server.)

The Red Herb’s Top 10 Games of 2020
Hey, fuck 2020. You might notice that many of the “Best Of” lists you read this year and last can’t help but mention how terrible 2020 was. That’s because every day was like hitting a new, splinter riddled branch on our 365 day plummet off a shit-coated tree. The year brought with it a viral pandemic that served as a pressure cooker for the societal and systemic issues boiling beneath the surface of our every day life. And we’re not out of it.
At least one positive holds true of 2020: the games were pretty darn good. One has to wonder, though, if 2020 was the last year of what can be called “normalcy” for the video game industry. Now that the remainder of titles brewed in pre-Covid times are out in the wild, what will the future of gaming look like as studios shift to work-from-home and distribution models migrate to digital as the primary bread winner? What will games look like going forward?
I have no fucking clue. We’ll get there when we get there. But looking back, I’m glad to have had such solid distractions from the stress and strife. If 2020 is any indicator for the industry going forward, then my takeaway is that games will continue to grow in prominence because of their ability to help us cope and, more importantly, stay connected.
Anyway, here’s video games:
10. MARVEL’S AVENGERS
Tumblr media
Oh, Marvel’s Avengers. I know you expected to be on more prestigious Top 10 lists than mine. Truthfully, I debated whether or not you should be here. But I had to search my soul (stone) on this one. Really assemble my feelings. Tony Stark my thoughts (?). Here’s the short of it: Marvel’s Avengers has a great story campaign with a surprising amount of emotional weight thanks largely to Kamala Khan’s quest to reassemble the heroes of her youth. Once the final cutscene ends, though, players were expected to take their play box of Marvel heroes, jump online, and duke it out against hordes of villains for the privilege of precious loot and level gains. It would be impossible to get bored because Crystal Dynamics was going to continually Bifrost in new quests, cosmetics, and heroes -- for free!
Except, after fans blasted through the campaign (took me a solid weekend), they found a multiplayer mode filled with repetitive fights against non-descript A.I.M Bots, a handful of dull, un-Marvelous environments (the PNW?! In a video game?! Wowwee!), and a grind for gear that became useless minutes after it was equipped. Oh, and bugs. Tons of bugs. It must be hard for A.I.M. to take earth’s mightiest heroes seriously when they’re falling through the fucking earth every other mission.
So why the Kevin Accolade™? Of all the mistakes and underbaked ideas, Crystal Dynamics got the most important thing right: they made me feel like I was a part of the Avengers. Cutting through the sky as Iron Man; dive bombing, fists-first as the Hulk; firing gadgets at cronies as Black Widow; cracking a row of skulls with Cap’s shield… Avengers is a brawler on super soldier serum.
The combat is crunchy and addictive, and surprisingly deep once you unlock your character’s full suite of skills and buffs. The gear matters little. But choosing a loadout that works for you -- like ensuring enemy takedowns grant you a health orb every time or turning area clearing attacks to focused beams of hurt -- does matter. When it comes to games with disastrous launches, Avengers is the most deserving of a triumphant comeback story because, if you clear the wreckage, I think there’s a solid game here. If I was able to spend hours playing it in its roughshod state, I can see myself digging in for the long-term once it’s polished up and given a healthy dose of content. You know...if Square Enix doesn’t outright abandon it.
9. STREETS OF RAGE 4
Tumblr media
Here’s a fact about me: I love beat ‘em ups. From Final Fight to X-Men to The Simpsons, I prioritized my quarters for the beat ‘em up machines (and House of the Dead simply because House of the Dead fuckin’ owns). Unfortunately, Streets of Rage wasn’t in arcades, and I didn’t own a Genesis growing up, so I didn’t get around to the series until Sega re-released as part of a collection. Though my history with the 29 year old brawler is shorter than some, the basics stand out out right away: it’s an awesome side-scrolling brawler filled with zany character designs and high octane boss fights.
SoR4 nails that simple spirit while adding an electric soundtrack, buttery smooth animations, and an art style that looks like a comic book in motion. You can button-mash your way through the game or master your timing to combo stun the shit out of bad guys. Same screen co-op is a requisite for the beat ‘em up genre but I have to call it out nonetheless given that it's next to obsolete these days. The story campaign is, of course, finite but a stream of unlockables and a Boss Rush Mode pad out the package nicely.
I really don’t have to go on and on. I’m on board with any game that captures the arcadey high of classic beat ‘em ups, and Streets of Rage 4 does it with flare.
8. RESIDENT EVIL 3 REMAKE
Tumblr media
Resident Evil 2’s remake was my game of the year in 2019. It’s a pitch perfect revision that captures the pulse-pounding fear of the original while beautifully updating its graphics and gameplay for modern audiences. The most striking aspect of RE2’s remake is how it expands and reconfigures the classic game’s environments and set pieces. Capcom managed to recontextualize, and even improve on, the original’s design while staying faithful to its tone and atmosphere.
Resident Evil 3’s remake is less successful in modifying and improving on its source material. If the game feels like it was handled by a different team than RE2R, your gamer hands have good eyes (roll with it). It was developed by a separate internal team (three different teams, in fact), but that’s actually one of many choices mirroring its 1999 forebear. Just like the original, RE3R is a tighter (i.e. shorter) experience that launched less than a year after its predecessor. And just like the original, the game skirts away from survival horror in favor of action horror.
Unlike last year’s remake, however, RE3R paints in broad strokes with the original material much in the same way that 2004’s Dawn of the Dead remake shared a vague resemblance with Romero’s ‘79 classic. Capcom at least nails down what matters: you play as Jill Valentine, beaten and discredited after the Arklay Mountains incident, during her last escape from the zombie besieged Raccoon City. Her exit is complicated by Nemesis, a humanoid missile that relentlessly pursues her from minute two of the game. Her only chance of making it out alive is by teaming up with a gaggle of Umbrella dispatched mercenaries, including an overly handsome fellow named Carlos Oliveras that you control for a spell. But fans struggled to get over what Capcom didn’t remake. Several enemies, boss fights, and a “divergent path” mechanic that had you choose how best to escape the Nemesis in a pinch were omitted from the remake. Even an entire section set in a clock tower was cut. But, let’s be honest, the biggest omission is a secret ending where Barry Burton saves the day using only his beard. For real, YouTube that shit.
If you look at what the remake does instead of what it doesn’t, you’ll find a lightning paced action game highlighted by tense, one-on-one fights against the constantly mutating Nemesis. The tyrant’s grotesque transformations evoke the mind-rending, gut turning creature designs found in John Carpenter's The Thing. It’s sad that Nemesis doesn’t pursue you through the levels as diligently as he did in the original, or as Mr. X had in last year’s remake, but these “arena fights” end up being harrowing and fun, culminating in a memorable final encounter. The remake also treats us to the best incarnation of Jill to date. She’s a cynical badass, exasperated at how Umbrella upended her life, and can take a plunge off of a building yet still muster enough energy to call Nemesis a bitch. RE3R also shines thanks to its snappy combat, including a contextual dodge that feels rewarding to pull off, less bullet-sponge enemies than RE2, and an assortment of weapons to get you through Jill’s Very Bad Night(s). It makes for a necessary, though shorter, companion to last year’s stellar remake.
7. HADES
Tumblr media
I’m experiencing a new type of shame including a title that I haven’t beaten on my Top 10 list, but I can assure you that I’ve dumped hours into its addictive death loop. It’s probably because of my resistance to looking up any tips, but given the skill-check nature of the difficult boss fights, I’m almost afraid the top shelf advice will amount to “die less, idiot.”
My failings aside, Hades is brilliant. It’s the perfect merger of gameplay and storytelling. You play as Zagreus, son of Hades, and your entire goal is to escape your father’s underworld domain. You pick from a selection of weapons, like a huge broadsword or spear, and attempt your “run,” seeing how far you can make it before an undead denizen cuts you down. It’s familiar roguelike territory, but where Supergiant separates their game from the pack is in the unique feeling of constant progression, even as you fail. With each run, not only is Zagreus earning a currency (gems or keys) that unlock new skills that make the next go a little easier, you’re also consistently treated to new lore. The fallen gods and heroes that line your father’s hall greet you after each death and provide a new insight into their world. The writing is bouncy and hilarious, the voice acting ethereal and alluring, and the character designs could make a lake thirsty.
Supergiant’s stylistic leanings are at their peak here. They’ve managed the impossible feat of making failure feel like advancement. Sure, it totally fucks up other roguelikes for me, but that’s okay. None of those games have Meg.
6. DEMON’S SOULS
Tumblr media
Whereas Capcom takes liberties with their remakes, Bluepoint took the Gus Van Sant approach and made a 1:1 recreation of the 2009 title that launched the “Soulslike” genre. The dividing difference is a 2020 facelift brought to us by way of the PlayStation 5’s next-gen horsepower. There’s been online arguments (surprise) regarding the loss of Fromsoftware’s visual aesthetic in translating the PS3 original in order to achieve a newfound photorealism. It’s true, some beasties lose their surreal weirdness -- a consequence of revisiting designs without the worry of graphical or time constraints -- but the game’s world is still engrossing, morbid, and bleakly gorgeous.
That’s not to say all Bluepoint did was overhaul the graphics and shove this remake out the door. No, their improvements are nuanced, under-the-hood changes that gently push the genre into the next-generation. For one, the loading times are incredible. You could hop between all five archstones in under a minute if you wanted. And this game is a best DualSense controller showcase outside of Astro’s Playroom. You can feel a demonstrable difference between hitting your sword against a wall compared to connecting it with an attacking creature. Likewise, the controller rumbles menacingly as to let you know enemies are stomping across a catwalk above you. “Better rumbles” was not on my wish list of next-gen features, but the tactile feedback goes great lengths to make you feel like you’re there.
Granted, sticking so closely to the original means its pratfalls are also carried over to the next-gen. The trek between bonfire checkpoints is an eternity compared to the game’s successors, and Fromsoftware hadn’t quite mastered the sword ballet of boss fights prevalent in Dark Souls. Instead, a handful of bosses feel more like set pieces where you’re searching for the “trick” to end it versus having to learn attack patterns and counters. Still, it’s easy to see the design blueprint that bore a whole new genre. From having to memorize enemy placements to hunting down the world’s arcane secrets in the hopes of finding a new item that pushes the odds in your favor. Bluepoint’s quality of life improvements only make it kinder (not easier) to plunge into the game, obsess over its idiosyncrasies, and begin to master every inch of it. That is until you roll into New Game+ and the game shoves a Moonlight Greatsword up your ass.
5. YAKUZA: LIKE A DRAGON
Tumblr media
Here’s a fact about me I’m sure you don’t know: I love beat ‘em ups. Streets of Rage 4 had an easy time making it on this list because it can be classified as both a “beat ‘em up” and “good.” Here’s another fact about me: I’m not the biggest fan of JRPGs. I’m told this is not because of any personal preferences I harbor, but rather due to a distinct lack of culture. I’ve made peace with that. At least my uncultured ways are distinctive.
But my disinterest in JRPGs is notable here because it illustrates how very good Like A Dragon is. Transitioning the Yakuza series from a reactive brawler (entrenched in an open-world SIM) to a full-blown turned-based RPG was risky -- especially 8 entries into the mainline series -- but it pays off explosively for Like A Dragon. Not only does the goofiness, melodrama, and kinetic energy translate to an RPG -- it’s improved by it. Beyond a new protagonist -- the instantly likable and infinitely affable Ichiban Kasuga -- we’re finally treated to an ensemble cast that travels with you, interacts with you, and grows with you. Their independent stories weave into Ichi’s wonderfully and end up mattering just as much as his.
The combat doesn’t lose any of its punch now that you’re taking turns. In fact, it feels wilder than ever and still demands situational awareness as your enemies shift around the environment, forcing you to quickly pick which move will do the most damage and turn the fight in your favor. RGG purposefully made Ichi obsessed with Dragon Quest (yes, specifically Dragon Quest) as an excuse to go ham and morph enemies into outlandish fiends that would populate Ichi’s favorite series. It’s a fun meta that never loses its charm.
This is the best first step into a new genre I’ve ever seen an established franchise make and I hope like hell they keep with it for future outings -- and that Ichi returns to keep playing hero. There’s plenty of callbacks and treats for longtime fans, but RGG did a masterful job rolling out the virtual carpet for a whole new generation of Yakuza fanatics.
4. GHOST OF TSUSHIMA
Tumblr media
Sucker Punch’s dive into 13th century Japan doesn’t redefine the open-world genre. But like Horizon: Zero Dawn before it, Ghost of Tsushima takes familiar components of the genre and uses them exceptionally well, creating an airtight experience that can’t help but stand out. I can tell Sucker Punch mused on games like Assassin’s Creed and Breath of the Wild, tried to figure out what makes those games tick, and then brought their own spin to those concepts. You can feel it in their obsession to make traversal through the environment as unobtrusive as possible, letting the wind literally guide you to your destinations instead of forcing the player to glue their eyes to a mini-map. You can feel it in how seamless it is to scale a rooftop before silently dropping on a patrol, blade first. You can feel it in the smoothness behind the combat as your sword clashes against the enemy’s. Every discrete part is fine-tuned yet perfectly complements the whole. The game is silk in your hands.
The mainline story can be humdrum, though. It mirrors the beats of a superhero origin story, which isn’t surprising when you account for the three Infamous titles and satellite spinoffs under Sucker Punch’s belt. But Jin Sakai’s personal journey outshines the cookie-cutter plot. His gradual turn from the strict samurai code to a morally ambiguous vigilante lifestyle (to becoming, eventually, a myth) is a fascinating exploration in shifting worldviews. This is bolstered by the well-written side-missions dotting your quest, some of which play out in chains. It’s these diversions about melancholy warriors and villagers adjusting to life under invasion that end up being the essential storytelling within the game. Whatever you do, don’t skip a single one.
Before GoT can overstay its welcome with collectible hunting and stat-tree building, the ride is over. If you find exhaustive open-world titles, well, exhausting, Sucker Punch coded enough of a campaign to sticking the landing and not more. But if you were looking for more, the game’s co-op Legends mode is the surprise encore of the year. It strikes its own tone, with vibrant, trippy designs, and a progression system that embarrasses other AAA titles in the space (I mean Avengers. I’m talking about Avengers).
3. THE LAST OF US PART II
Tumblr media
The Last of Us is widely regarded as a masterpiece. It’s a melancholic trek through a realistic post-apocalypse, driven by the budding bond between a world-weary survivor and a would-be teenage savior. The fungal zombies and violent shootouts with scavengers were scary and exciting, but ultimately just window-dressing compared to the level of complicated, and honest, human emotion on display throughout the tale. While a segment of detractors helpfully pointed out that The Last of Us’ story isn’t unique when compared to years of post-apocalyptic books, comics, and movies, that argument seems to forget that a narrative more concerned with the human protagonists’ connections to one another instead of saving the world or feeding into a hero complex is pretty unique for games -- especially a high profile, AAA budgeted game.
Still, fans made heroes out of Joel and Ellie because of their own connection to their journey. And that connection is almost instantly challenged in the opening hours of The Last of Us Part II to heartbreaking effect. But I’m here to tell you that any other sequel would have been dishonest to the legacy of the original game. To be given a hero’s quest as a continuation, an imagined sequel where Joel and Ellie do battle against the viral infection that’s swept the earth, would have been a despicable cash-in. It would have been a mistake to follow-up the original’s careful examination of human nature just to placate an audience that seems to have missed the point Naughty Dog made. The Last of Us Part II hurts. But it has to or else it wouldn’t have been worth making. It’s a slow-burn meditation on the harmful ripples revenge creates, how suffering begets suffering, and how, if we don’t break the cycles of violence we commit to, suffering will come for us.
To drive this point, we’re given two distinct perspectives during the meaty (and somewhat overlong) campaign, split between Ellie Williams, the wronged party seeking revenge, and Abby Anderson, an ex-Firefly whose actions set the sequel into motion. The greatest trick Naughty Dog pulls off isn’t forcing us to play as a character we hate, it’s giving us reasons to emphasize with them. It was gradual, and despite some heavy-handed moments meant to squeeze sympathy out of the player (how many times do I have to see that fuckin’ aquarium?!), I eventually came to love Abby’s side of the story. The obvious irony being that she unwittingly walks the same path Joel did in the original.
My love for the narrative shouldn’t distract from how well designed the world is. Being a King County local, the vision of a ruined Seattle strikes an uncomfortable note -- it was eerie seeing recognizable buildings overgrown with vegetation but otherwise devoid of life. Maybe the heart-wrenching story also distracts from the fact this game is, by definition, survival horror. Exploring toppled buildings in the dark, hearing the animalistic chittering of the infected, defending yourself with limited resources… It manages to be a scarier entry into the genre in 2020 than even RE3R. There’s a particular fight in a fungus covered hospital basement that easily goes down as my Boss Fight of the Year. Human enemies make for clench-worthy encounters, too, with incredibly adept AI that forces you to keep moving around the environment and set traps to avoid getting overwhelmed.
Admittedly, the subject matter -- or more to the point, the grim tone -- was tough to stomach during an actual pandemic which has happily treated us to the worst of human nature. Still, The Last of Us Part II is absolutely worth playing for its balance of mature themes and expertly crafted world, and the way it juxtaposes beauty and awfulness in the same breath.
2. SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES
Tumblr media
The most impressive thing about Miles Morales is that, despite being a truncated midquel rather than a full-blown sequel, it’s a better game than 2018’s Spider-Man. It’s not because of the instantaneous loading times or the fancy ray-tracing techniques used on the PS5 version of the game. Rather, it’s how it takes the joyride of the original game and hones it into a laser focused experience filled to the brim exclusively with highs. Like Batman: Arkham Asylum going into Arkham City, Miles starts the game off with his mentor’s best abilities and tools. From there, he discovers his own powers, his bioelectric venom strike, which ends up feeling like the missing ingredient from the first game’s combat.
Your open-world playground -- a locale in the Marvel universe called “New York City” -- is exactly the same size as the previous installment, which helps avoid making the game feel “lesser.” But Insomniac wisely consolidated the random crimes Peter faced into a phone app that Miles can check and choose which activity to help out with. Choices like this really trim the fat from the main game and help alleviate “the open-world problem” where the story’s pacing suffers because players are spending hours on end collecting feathers. This is great because Miles’ story is also great. The narrative kicks Peter out pretty early on, focusing on how Miles assumes the role of city protector, primarily focused on his new home in Harlem. Insomniac avoids retreading the same path paved by Into the Spider-Verse by telling a relatable tale where Miles defines his identity as Spider-Man. With a strong cast led by Nadji Jeter as Miles, the game lands an impactful story that weaves its own new additions to Miles’ mythos (light spoiler: I loved their take on The Prowler).
Miles Morales was pure virtualized joy from start to finish. A requirement of the platinum trophy is to replay the entirety of the game on New Game+. I didn’t hesitate to restart my adventure the minute the credits were over. Everything I loved about 2018’s Spider-Man is here: the swinging, the fighting, the gadgets, the bevy of costumes. But it gave me a new element I adore and can’t see Insomniac’s franchise proceeding without: being Miles Morales.
1. FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE
Tumblr media
I love subversive media, I do. And Square Enix’s “remake” of one the most beloved video games ever made subverts expectations by openly acknowledging that, yes, the original story you love exists and is consistently referenced in this game. But this is not that story. This is something..else. Because the truth is, SE could never have recreated FFVII and delivered a title that matched the Sacred Game fans created in their heads. That impossible standard is like an imagined deity, given power by feeding on raw nostalgia reinforced by years of word-of-mouth and appearances on Top 100 lists. I’m not saying FFVII is a bad game or that fans give it too much credit. Not at all. There’s a reason it’s so influential -- it’s good! But memory works in a funny way over time. We have a tendency to codify our perception of a thing over the reality of it. The connection we make to certain media, especially when introduced at a young age as FFVII had been to a whole generation of fans so long ago, creates a legend in our heads. Unfortunately, it’s a legend no developer could achieve when tasked with remaking it.
So Square...didn’t. Final Fantasy VII Remake has the same characters, setting, and plot beats as the first third of the original game but it’s not the same game, nor is it a remake of it in the traditional sense. It’s something new. And I fucking love that about it.
Everything is reconfigured, including the combat. After years of trying to merge RPG mechanics with more approachable (and marketable) real-time action (see FFXV and the Kingdom Hearts games for examples), Square Enix finally landed on the perfect balance. You fully control Cloud on the battlefield, from swinging your impossibly huge buster sword to dodging attacks. The ATB gauge (no one knows what the acronym stands for -- that information has been lost to time) gradually fills up, letting unleash powerful moves. But best of all, you fight in a party, and you can switch who to control on the fly.
That may not sound revolutionary, let alone for a Final Fantasy, but each character has a completely unique feel and suite of moves. At times, it feels like playing a Devil May Cry game where you can switch between Dante, Vergil, and Nero on the fly (that’s a free idea, Capcom. Hire me, you cowards). You can soften up an enemy with Cloud’s buster to increase their stagger meter, switch to Barret for a quick gatling barrage, and finally switch to Tifa to crush them with her Omnistrike. You can accomplish this in real-time or slow down the action to plan this out. It’s a great mix of tactics and action that prevents the game from feeling like a mindless hack n’ slash.
What really, really works here is the character work. Each lead walks in tropes first, but the longer you spend with the members of your party, the more their motivations and fears are laid out. You end up having touching interactions with just about the whole main cast. There’s a small segment, after Cloud saves Aerith from invading Shinra guards, that the two make an escape via rooftop. They make light conversation -- small talk really -- but it’s exchanges like this that feel genuine, perfectly framing their characters (stoic versus heartfelt), and grounding an otherwise larger-than-life adventure.
Many bemoaned the fact that FFVIIR only revisits a small portion of the original game, but I think it was a brilliant choice -- to massively expand on areas we only got to see a little of in the original. I honestly didn’t want to leave Midgar. It’s a world rife with conflict and corporate oppression, sure, but Midgar is beautifully realized, from the slums below the plates, populated with normal people trying to make the best of life, to the crime controlled Wall Market, adorned with gaudy lights and echoing honky tonk tunes. It very well may be years before FFVII’s remake saga comes to a close, but if each entry is paved with as much love and consideration and, yes, storytelling subversion as this introductory chapter… It’ll be worth the wait.

What I’m Up To
Taking a brief pause from my fantasy screenplay to talk a bit about what I’m playing/reading/listening to these days.
VIDYA GAMES
Cities: Skylines- Still working on my shithole city in all its glory. San Cruz has expanded to over 100k residents and in the past week I’ve built a level 3 park, extensive monorail system, and even extensive helicopter pickup lines. It’s still a terrible place to live, but it’s also fun to grapple with the challenges of a desert map.
Yakuza 0- I’m gonna post this take here, since we’re not on twitter and I’m safe from the mobs- Yakuza 0 is the experience everyone promised me Witcher 3 would be. Thrilling combat, a fascinating game world, and lovely, meaningful side quests. If this sounds like I’m digging at Witcher 3, I promise I’m not. I personally didn’t enjoy that game. But obviously, many, many people did and would disagree with my critiques. That’s totally fine! I’m just saying I’m enjoying Yakuza 0 for merits similar to what I’ve heard in connection with the Witcher franchise- and I could also see people having similar gripes, too! I’ve been on a well documented single player drought over the past couple months. Yakuza 0 finally broke me out of that, and it’s been a thrill. Getting out of the COD grind cycle has been a joy. This is a lovely experience that rewards curiosity by sparking yet more curiosity. I can’t wait to see how it continues to open up. Expect my Twitter account to go on about this for a while.
Mario 64- I have 8 stars! I’m told I have like, 113 more to go, a number which makes me groan.  So far, Mario 64 has felt like an obligation that is occasionally fun. It’s very dated, but it has the DNA that would go on to make later games like Odyssey an absolute joy.  Games like these feel more like an exercise in filling in my gamer history gaps than they do labors of love. Like most retro games, I have a hard time getting into Mario 64 for longer than 20 minutes at a time. So this will likely be a long-running project.
Star Wars: Squadrons- I probably should have known better, but I picked this game up ‘cuz the reviews were decent and the price felt right. Good news is that in the couple of hours I’ve spent with it, the gameplay is mostly solid and the graphics are beautifully rendered. It feels like both Rogue Squadron AND X-Wing, which is a hell of an accomplishment. Bad news is several of the missions appear to be badly broken, requiring numerous restarts. The game is generous with checkpoints, so it’s not a huge deal, but it is annoying. Hopefully they patch that stuff. I also haven’t tried multiplayer yet. None of my friends have bit on picking this up, so I’m not sure when or if it will happen. Assuming I can power through the hammy story, I’ll at least finish the campaign sometime down the line, even if I can’t be bothered to care how any of this fits into the larger world of Star Wars.
Warzone- Still doing that Season 6 thing! Subways have been mostly a disappointment for me so far, and the new marksman rifle has made the current meta a veritable hell for anyone with underdeveloped quick scoping skills, but I still get a couple matches in every day.
ANIME
God of High School- To say God of High School moves fast is an understatement. True to form, it sprinted its way through the finale. It’s got some lovely sequences, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the OST, but beyond a couple of choice battles, it didn’t leave a strong impression on me. I’m glad I saw it, but I’m not thirsting for a new season.
Dragon Ball- I switched over to the English dub of this show. I don’t usually do that, but I was struggling to keep my attention. I think in a way it helped? The English dub actors are far more cartoonish and silly, which really plays to the absurd animation and story turns. I’m on S1E13, and the first summoning of the dragon just happened. I won’t spoil except to say...this show has a deeply specific sense of humor, and I’m starting to dig it?
Fire Force- Season 2 is finally taking off for me. I’m on ep 14, and the focus has shifted over to the mysterious Joker. The battles have been compelling, as have been the mysteries placed by his storyline. I was struggling with feeling invested in S2 thus far, but the past few ep’s have reminded me of why I found this show special in the first place- when it gets serious and stays focused, it’s one of the tightest active shonen stories.
Manga
I’ve been on a bit of a manga break lately. Today I did take time with another chapter of Fruits Basket, which continues to be a lovely delight. I also recently received Master Edition copies of both Fairy Tail and Berserk. This week, my goal is to finish both Fruits Basket and my latest volumes of One Piece so I can dive into my new Master Editions.
Music
I haven’t had much change in my music tastes lately. I’ve been listening to a lot of Kompany and other dubstep artists, mostly ‘cuz I find the deep bass and variety of sounds soothing to me while I’m writing and zoning out during sessions of Cities: Skylines. I also enjoy its tempo while I’m running. Anything that helps the time pass, really.
Tabletop Games
I played 6 hours of DND this weekend. It was mostly a free-form improv session where I let the players do basically anything they wanted to within the gameworld we established during The Lost Mines of Phandelver. It was very heavy on roleplay, without a single instance of combat. While I was personally exhausted after the session, the players expressed that they had a very good time. We’ll be looking to finish up what they started in a bonus session for October!
Wrastlin!
My WWF Discord group just finished 1999 King of the Ring. Mr. Ass won! One of our folks actually got her bracket right. I had predicted Kane winning, so I was obviously out of luck on that. In the last RAW, Stone Cold Steve Austin just won the Heavy Weight Title from the Undertaker in an unlikely win! We’ll see how long that stint lasts...
Streams
I tried streaming from my personal Twitch using a schedule last week!
It...had mixed results.
My Warzone streams were my most popular, which is funny, ‘cuz I’m not that good at Warzone. My least popular were my Dungeon of the Endless and Yakuza 0 streams, which is not a big surprise. Those games aren’t that fun to watch.
I wanted to do the schedule as a an attempt to see if I could get a small audience or find some new meaning in games I was working through by presenting them as content.
I found the answer to both was more or less “not really”.
And that’s okay!
I also learned streaming, even just for an hour a night, is hard work. We should all be kinder to our content creators and in awe of the friends we have who do it even when on one is watching. Content creation is so unforgiving. Maybe if I stuck with it longer I’d have found my niche, but honestly, I just enjoy games for the games, and turning them into content just isn’t my speed.
I’ve been doing the whole SpriteClub thing per usual. I’m a paid subscriber now! And I even am on a greeting basis with some folks. That’s been really cool. We had debuts this weekend too, where creators submit new fighters. The system matches them with other fighters to determine ratings. It’s a lot of fun, and the event always has this festival atmosphere to it.
I’ve also been watching a lot of streams from the gals over at hololive-EN. Specifically, I’ve been watching Gawr Gura, Amelia Watson and Mori Calliope. It’s become nightly viewing in my household. I’ll save the debate on V-Tubers for a different place, suffice to say I have enjoyed the games they’ve presented and the personalities they’ve developed, and I think the success they’ve found is well earned. There are some talented folks behind these projects, and I find the streams to be relaxing, enjoyable, and at hours I can actually tune in for.
Personal News
Lately, I’ve been feeling pretty down. This can be easily correlated with the shift in temperature, for sure. I know a lot of people really dig fall, and I used to be a SPOOKY SEASON guy myself, but as I get older, fall has shifted into this period of mourning as I recognize the shortening days and the coming winter, which has always played hell with my body.
I’ve been struggling with a number of phantom symptoms that seem to pop up this time of year- bad digestion, terrible sleep (likely resulting from mild apnea), fatigue and heart palpitations. In turn, my mental health has been seriously flagging.
At the suggestion of my therapist, I’ve started up a new vitamin regimen including a multivitamin and magnesium. I’ve also focused on finding potassium enriched foods and have cut back significantly on my drinking and caffeine. So far, this has actually resulted in me gaining weight ‘cuz I’ve been indulging in a lot of sugar as a coping mechanism, but I’m working through getting back to a healthy place where I can both track my intake but also be content with where I’m at. Right now I’m doing my best to try and fight the urge to become a Nap Guy.
Last week I took several naps, even on my off days, and I’ve had a hard time sustaining my energy throughout the day, so I’m doing a better job of getting the sleep my body asks for while also structuring my day with more purpose so I’m left with less time just lying around wondering what to do.
Last week I broke my personal best for a 5K, breaking 24 minutes. For today’s run, I plan to try and break my 7:30 time on my mile run to the gym.
For weights, I’ve gotten into a rhythm of 3 times a week, with Mondays and Fridays focusing on my core exercises- presses and curls, with Wednesdays focusing on pulls that are centered on working out my back, as well as bodyweight exercises such as dips and pull ups. This variation has given my limbs more time to heal up, which is welcome. Now if only I could be kinder to my body AFTER the gym, I might see some actual progress!
Work continues to be what it is. I’m at 30 hours now, which continues to be a huge positive. I don’t think I could keep at it with 40 hours. Change is a constant, and they seem to find new ways to make our jobs more convoluted every day. I have a quarterly review coming up with my new supervisor, but I have a feeling it won’t be nearly so traumatic as the last one, as I’ve done a good job of straightening up and flying right.
As I get more distance from August, I’m starting to recognize it- the events of my workplace disasters, my unplanned vacation, my off the rails spending and drinking- for what it was- it was a breakdown. And I’m still recovering from it. I was deeply unwell, and I took on some trauma- some of it wasn’t stuff I was looking for, some of it was stuff I brought on myself. I’m working through it. I wish I could say things like therapy have made a huge difference, but frankly, most of the work comes from stuff like this, where I’m just writing and being transparent with myself. That’s where I find the most healing work happens.
I still have a lot of my social media muted. When I need news, it typically filters through into my Discord, or Yahoo dings my phone or I see it on my Facebook feed. It’s fair to say that lately it’s felt like everything just Happens So Much.
I feel for my friends who are directly impacted- by the election, by the supreme court, by...just, everything. It all makes my own personal journey and endeavors feel...deeply small. At the same time, I just don’t have the emotional capacity required to house this perpetual crowd of events or constantly process everything in real time. I’m not sure when, if ever, I will have that again. I struggle to read ANYTHING- even friendly sites like Defector or The Discourse, without feeling an immense downswing.
I don’t know what the answer is. I wish I could just gut up and stay constantly plugged in for the sake of pals who might need to openly hash this out or draw attention to their causes or needs, but based on the past few months, I’m not sure I can take care of myself, let alone others. As I often tell close friends, my priorities these days are this small and in this order- Stay Healthy, Stay Kind, Stay Employed, Stay Productive- anything that goes right beyond that feels like a bonus in 2020.
At any rate, thanks for reading the update, y’all!
I’ll try and post these more regularly. I just wanted to check in with everyone and let y’all know how everything is going these days. Stuff like this helps me keep honest, as lately I’ve had a hard time sussing out what my direction is these days. Stay safe and well, and hit me up with what you’re up to, when you find a moment!

Sniper games for pc
Sniper games are about perking at the top of a building and punching holes through bad guys from a mile away with the help of a high-caliber rifle. Whether it’s a challenge to compensate for a bullet drop or the simple joy of seeing a group of enemies descend into panic as you pick up the helpless goons one by one – the PC Games Repacks pop into moments like these.
Sadly, there are not many games that focus solely on making the player feel like the ultimate ghost warrior, but there are a large number of sniper games with realistic sniping mechanics and sniper missions to keep your itchy finger going. Trigger. Our sniper game list offers everything from military simulations to more laid back experiences where you can make a strange mistake or even dig a sniper rifle completely.
We repeatedly return to our lists to ensure that they are as up-to-date as possible, so you can be assured that in the list below we are no less than a classic sniper game on PC.
1.GHOST RECON BREAKPOINT
Release Date October 4, 2019
Publisher Ubisoft
Genre/Tactical Shooter 3rd Person Shooter Game Open World
The latest Ghost Recon from Ubisoft was supposed to have a lot of sniper action. Ghost Recon introduces the Breakpoint Sharpshooter class, along with a bunch of sniping perches to complement your loadout. It is built around Ghost Recon Breakpoint class sniping and includes class benefits such as ‘breathing while doing’ and ‘bonuses’ using sniper rifles and DMRs. Ghost Recon Breakpoint’s best weapons are highly accurate and fun to use snipers like TAC50, HTI, and Scorpio – found from loot drops, boxes, and blueprints across the imaginary island of Auro.
The breakpoint also introduces quick loot that adds extra perks to your guns, such as improving accuracy or maneuverability. You are able to upgrade your sniper rifle using Ghost Recon Breakpoint Gunsmith and spend old gun parts to improve your favorite sniper. If you are planning to tackle this open-world best single-player games pc, sniper rifles are our recommended choice.
2.ARMA 3
Release Date September 12, 2013
Publisher Bohemia Interactive
Genre/Tactical Shooter Open-World
There is no point in Arma 3 being a sniper. It is a battle simulator and as such it prides itself on annoying realism – you have to use a rangefinder, zero your scope, and freeze your breath ahead of every long-range shot. You have to engage with extreme caution, when you are aware of your situation, when you are acting as a ghost behind enemy lines, you will be killed very quickly.
Arma 3 is so realistic, in fact, that some snipers pair up with a spotter who handles all the totals for them and reveals new targets. Unlike many sniper games, Arma 3 snaps a cooperative experience. Better still, Arma 3 has loads of updates and expansions, so it’s never too late to fall in love with this military simulator.
3. SNIPER ELITE 4
Release Date February 14, 2017
Publisher Rebellion
Genre/ shooter, Stealth game, 3rd-person shooter
The shooting of Nazis is never complete. Sniper Elite 4 continues the series’ gradual transformation from linear stitcher to sniper’s dream sandbox game, marking the occasion with Italy’s fascist switch. The sniper game chop is intact, so expect a realistic bullet drop and there’s plenty of scopes until you manage to slow down your heart rate.
Sniper Elite 4 also features the franchise’s Gore Pies de Restasance: X-ray Kill Cam. Now, in addition to being able to take out a Nazi’s testicle from a mile away, you can see internal damage caused by stabbing an enemy in the back or splattering flying out of a nearby explosion. And what sniper games really are, if not waving your crosshairs to a bad guy’s head, pulling the trigger, and then looking up at his skull as morbid curiosity.
But it is the sniper Elite 4’s sandbox level that is the biggest improvement over its predecessors. Each one is alive and full of possibilities – be it a side-quest, a glimpse of a possible environmental kill, or a sniper nest waiting to be uncovered and used. As we found when writing our Sniper Elite 4 PC Review, each level is sought to be maintained again and again, and this means more sniper game talent for your buck.
At the top, Sniper Elite 4 also received more single-player content in the form of Destastorm, a DLC mini-campaign in which you sneak into a naval base. The campaign released add-ons to chapters after the game’s launch, along with free multiplayer modes and maps. Sniper Elite 4 has a lot more to do as sniper games go on.
4. SQUAD
Release Date December 15, 2015
Publisher Offworld Industries
Genre/ Tactical shooter
While the squad does not have the role of a sniper, there is a mark sheet class – and if you don’t think there is a difference between the two, the squad probably isn’t for you. The squad’s gameplay is all about teamwork, and as such, there is no room for lone wolf roles such as snipers. A shooter’s job, on the other hand, is to go anywhere with the fire team, giving the team its effective access to reacting to long-range fire and generally attacking and defending.
Related Survival Games For PC
Communication and teamplay are also essential for future snipers. Hitting more than 500 meters will give little success, but a higher-magnification scope and better-stopping power ensure that the tracer always has the upper hand in long-range skirmishes. The way it should be in a sniper game For PC
5. INSURGENCY SANDSTORM
Release Date December 12, 2018
Publisher Focus Home Interactive
Genre/ Tactical shooter
The original insurgency offered a genuine albeit clunky modern best FPS pc games with some solid sneezing mechanics. Insurgency: Sandstorm overhauls everything for graphics and animations, sound design and weapon models, and the result is a multiplayer shooter that sounds as authentic as Arma’s, especially when it comes to it’s powerful, one-hit-kill-snipers is. There is not much in bullet drop or travel time as most maps are very small, but weapon models are impressively detailed and have small details such as magnification effects when you are immersed in the role of the trail.
As much as insurgency: Sandstorm’s best zombie games pc focuses on large-scale attacks, playing a sniper in this FPS, which is about cutting flanking routes and catching lines of sight, so taking a spot and a Expect it to stick to the match. Most multiplayer shooters move too fast to make a sniper’s nest worth catching, but in Rebellion: Sandstorm it is necessary.
6. BATTLEFIELD 5
Release Date November 9, 2018
Publisher Criterion Software
Genre/first-person shooter battle royale game
Battlefield games are always baked for snipers, with bullet drops, travel time, and large-scale multiplayer maps ensuring that the range is well-crafted for long-range assassins. Battlefield 5 does not add a huge amount to the equation, but the selection of historical sniper rifles at your disposal is one of the best in the pc games for the free genre.
Whether you prefer to lay low in a hay knot, punching holes through a helmet with a carabiner 98 Kurz, or fancy carrying on vehicles with a Boyz anti-tank rifle. In addition, the new Battle Royal mode, Firestorm, let’s now put your sniper skills into the biggest Battlefield map in the final test against over 60 players. Best Horror pc games
7. CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE REMASTERED
Release Date November 4, 2016
Publisher Activision, Activision Blizzard
Genre/ First-person shooter Game
Quickscoping and no scooping may not be as likely in modern warfare as they were in the original game, but the remastered version of the game is still home to the best pair of sniper missions in gaming: All Gilded Up and One Shot, One Kill.
These heavily scripted missions lead the player through the ghost town of Chernobyl on a mission to assassinate a Russian ultrasooologist-cum-arms dealer. The atmosphere is rhythmic, the narrative attractiveness surrounding it, and the pace irresistible – these missions ignited a passion for sniper games in all who played them. As we found in our Modern Warfare Remastered Review, the game is more than a flashy HD makeover, it is a complete remake of the old game.
8. HITMAN 2
Release Date November 13, 2018
Publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment
Genre/Action Adventure 3rd Person Stealth Game open world
Hitman adds more to what we love in the acclaimed sequel to Hitman 2 – silent and brutally shot opportunities.
Scope aficionados will enjoy a game mode within Hitman Sniper Assassin, Hitman 2 that can be played solo or multiplayer. You only have the job of navigating a level equipped with your sniper rifle, and the mission becomes a puzzle that you will have to figure out how to solve using stealth, position and time. A headshot is not enough for landing – you have to hide the bodies and cover the evidence to pass the level.
New Levels and The Prison ‘and u Huntu Port’ for Hitman Sniper Assassin were recently released with the latest hit 2Alc
9. OPERATION FLASHPOINT: DRAGON RISING
Release Date October 6, 2009
Publisher Codemasters
Genre/ Tactical shooter, Military simulation
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising has a lot of load-outs to choose from, but when you’re working in a sandbox, only a sniper rifle in about 200 square kilometers makes sense. Especially when you can command a squad of AI soldiers to clean all the rooms and do the dirty work for you, leaving you free to pick up utensils from the miscreants in the safety of a grassy knot far and wide. best strategy games for pc
So far away, in fact, that it is possible to kill enemies more than 1,000 meters from you. There are some substantial bullet-drops to take into account, but a few things warmed up the cocktails such as picking up an entire enemy squad without them ever finding out where you are. What else is there for sniper games? Of course, because Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a battle simulator, you will have plenty of opportunities to make the helicopter fall out of the sky with a single shot.
10. COUNTER-STRIKE GLOBAL OFFENSIVE
Release Date
Release Date August 21, 2012
Publisher Valve Corporation
Genre/ First-person shooter
The best sniper games are not about taking that one entire shot. In the hyper-competitive space of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive a Perfect Shot is not enough (even if you know the best places to throw CS: Smoke Grenade). You have to take thousands of perfect shots with each other to split each one, and there will be no margin for error. Forget Ghillie Suits, CS: Only care about muscle memory and accuracy – nothing less will do.
With this in mind, you can look for the CS: GO console command to access the game’s practice mode before going into the killing areas of the multiplayer. Pokemon pc Games
We also have CS: Gaming, thanks to the best and most famous sniper rifle in AWP. Why so much love for a gun? With each shot that plays with an adorable sound, it is also the only gun in the game capable of killing an enemy with one shot to the torso. This Quake’s railgun is distilled in a realistic form, and in the hands of a supporter, it is destructive.
CS: GO is one of the most played games on Steam and its ultra-competitive nature makes it one of the best multiplayer games on PC. Playing online against highly skilled players will make you an eagle-eyed sharpshooter in no time.

Dying Light 2 - Q&A
In the official Dying Light discord one of the representatives, Uncy, from Techland held a q&a session during E3 2019 and I took the time to copy everything down. There were a lot of questions asked, but I only copied down the ones that were answered.
Uncy said they were going to post a FAQ with all of these questions and I’ll make sure to link it when they do. As of right now, I don’t think it has been released.
A lot of people were typing during the session and unfortunately a lot of questions got repeated. There is also a decent amount of typos in these questions, but it felt important to keep the Q&A session in an honest a form as possible, so I have not corrected any typos or omitted any duplicate questions.
I did add a “Q” and “A” to the beginning of every question and answer for clarity. Uncy used emojis sometimes in their answers, but I did not copy those over if they weren’t text emojis.
I have put my own notes in [italicized brackets].
WARNING: There are huge spoilers for The Following in these questions, they are marked to make them easier to avoid, but please be wary.
@tafferfield I know you got a pretty wicked master list of DL2 stuff, so if any of this helps you feel free to grab it and add it.
Putting under a read more because this is long:
Q: Are all current zombies considered volatiles? A: Not really, there are still regular zombies and volatiles
Q: Zombies only exit the night? A: now that's a hard one, zombies can stay outside for some time during the day but they get weak IN THE SUN
Q: How much diffrent endings are there? A: About endings - more than one, don't want to spoil it
Q: Battle royale mode? A: no BR mode
Q: Are you able to clear the city of zombies? A: Basically human learned how to deal with infection, so the more humans the less zombies
Q: how does Aiden stop from turning? does he use antizin or something else A: antizine is finished but human discovered that strong UV light weakens the infection, that's why you have the biomarker
Q: Is Aiden a foreigner to the land like Crane? A: Aiden doesn't even know Crane exists Q: I meant is Aiden from around there or did he come from somewhere else A: he's not from the city, he's an outsider
Q: What are future plans for multiplayer? A: multiplayer wise - we have some stuff coming apart from co-op, but I can't really share multiplayer details now
Q: Will there be a fallout kind of karma system? A: karma system? nope but your choices and actions will affect how people see you

Q: Will the game be translated into Brazilian Portuguese as the first? A: more languages will come, cant really tell for now
Q: Can we expect to see actual time sensitive activities within the game? (IE: Do this now or forever lose the chance) A: Yes, but its more like choice wise, like do one thing and u will never be able to do another
Q: Will you play Dying Light 2 with me on release ;d? A: why not
Q: Will Aiden be customizable (e.g. hair, individual clothing pieces, etc) A: yup there will be customization
Q: Is there a weapon combo system? A: what do you mean by that? Q: Like a combo like last game you could spam attack and hold it for a more powerful attack, I'm asking if you can combo attacks like 2 quick attacks and then a charged attack or stuff like that [This question never actually got fully answered]
Q: Did anything replace the grappling hook. Did it change in anyway? A: there's a grappling hook - and some more options to travel cause the city is huge {you will be able to upgrade them}
[SPOILERS FOR THE FOLLOWING]
Q:if the vial ending from the following is canon (if the following is canon) is crane a Volatile?
A: in some way - both are canon. It's up to the player to choose it Q: will Crane make an appearance or not. If you cant answer then atleast say which ending is canon A: not really
[END SPOILERS]
Q: Will the game launch with any DLC's? A: i dont think it will launch with dlc's but post release support is planned

Q: Are firearms coming back ? A: No guns, no firearms - but there will be distance weapons like crossbows
Q: do we gain strength or anything when nighs fall? since we are infected A: during the night you need to use UV lights to stop the infection, you wont get stronger

Q: Czy będzie drzewko umiejetnosci tak jak w 1 ? A: tak
Q: Is the max number in a party still going to be 4 or will more team members be able to join in co-op multiplayer, if there is any. A: 4 player coop

Q: Can you turn into a zombie if you dont pay enough attention to your wristband? A: that's still under discussion, i don't think you will be able to play as a zombier tho

Q: Referencing the ease of combat in DL1, can we expect to see actual struggle when going against enemies? Will we have the feeling of should I fight or run? A: Ups [???] depends on the difficulty for sure, some of the fights will be hard, for example - you fight some guys near to the building and then zombies hear it and come out for few minutes, and you have XvXvX fight to go trough
Q: Kiedy pre order? A: Niedługo
Q: are the voliatile hive quests coming back? A: you will be cleaning some mess for sure, I don't know if those particular quests will go back

Q: Will there be weapons rarities? A: some weapons will be stronger than other - don't know about how will we deal with rarities
Q: can we do farming? A: i think that other people are meant for farming, not Aiden
Q: Is dl2 going to have the same docket system like dl1 if not please explain A: dockets are cool, would be good to have them back
Q: Will zombies give a fight for your life feel, or will it be light DL1 where they are primarily just nuisances? A: try going to dark zone during the day, you wont get out of there alive

Q: Is there gonna be something that can make you even stronger if you maxed out all skill trees? (Like the Legend in DL1.) A: that's a really late-game stuff, i believe something like that will come
Q: will the hostile factions attack you if you go into certain areas (i.e if you take a safe zone for a scavenger will the peackeepers attack you in an office building A: yup

Q: we can pre-order the game soon ? i mean like next month maybe or after a while ? A: yup, preorders will go live when we will figure out the versions etc
Q: Will multiplayer/coop loot be instance based, or client base? (DL1 uses a client base, as each player gets their own drops/items from chests/zombies) Instance based would be there's only 1 item for all players, first to grab gets. A: We still need to figure that out, I believe we will check which one is better
Q: any cool easter eggs coming? A: a lot of them
Q: Will there be any missions that require 4 players, and can more people join you for the final boss? A: 4 people is max
Q: will there be any more presentations or info about DL2 at e3? A: there will be more + new s this month

Q: Will we see random wildlife throughout our explorations? (Not those of zombies.) A: yup and you can hunt them
Q: Will we be able to use the dying light companion app in Dying Light 2 A: probably yes
Q: so is there infected animals or no ? A: I dont think so, it's not really confirmed, so we will see

Q: sorry for the torture but will there be a PVP gamemode or any special gamemode for DL2? A: we will have multiplayer based discussion, for now there are no details to tell about mp
Q: will DL2 get better mod support ? Something like Fallout 4 so we can add more stuff to the game A: i hope so
Q: asking again, will there be seasons? like winter and summer with weather changes? A: I don't think so
Q: Do i have to side with 1 faction completely? Do certain factions control certain safe zones or are safe zones neutral territory? A: nope, you don't have to side with 1 faction
Q: limitation (character inventory)? Like we can no longer have unlimited or 99x items in stacks - including crafting materials. A: I think there wont be limits to crafting materials, like 99x, i need to confirm that with devs tho
Q: Will there be walking zombie hordes, which will try to destroy safe zone's gates? And will it be like event? (is it really possible)? A: people's safe zones are protected with UV lights, zombies wont cross them

Q: Around how long would it take to playthrough the game once? A: quests etc are still coming so i cant really tell how long it will be right now
Q: Btw every pre-order got a bonus content so ofc dl2 got bonus content so when i buy the game after the release i can get this content even if i buy higher edition or its for pre-orders only ? A: i dont think we will have any preorder exclusives, time will tell tho

Q: what happened to the firearms i mean why they are removed from the game ? A: they are very rare commodity 15 years after diseaster
Q: can we drive vehicles? A: yes
Q: When does the Q&A end? A: in around 10 minutes

Q: So there is firearms in the game but they are very rare and hard to find ? i mean u can still find them but its hard right ? A: i mean that they are so rare that you wont find one, but as i said, there are still ranged weapons, and some you can craft on your own
Q: Will it be a new Be The Zomby ? Or Human player invading other world like DS3 ? A: as i said, no details for multiplayer this time, sorry! :x
Q: Will the implemented day/night cycle have any special amendments? (Can we expect to see random encounters/anomalies on random nights/days?) A: would be cool, ill ask devs
Q: In the trailer we saw bracelet and how "charges go down". What will happen if it goes down and will we have "antizin"? Can we buy or trade it? A: there is no antizine, strong UV lights weakens the infection, its still under discussion what will happen when it will go to 0, most possible outcome is simply dying and having to restart the game
Q: Hold up. "No guns" or "very rare guns"? I saw both those answers from Uncy A: its pretty much the same, like, they're all pretty much gone

Q: Will DL2 be on next gen xbox as it just got announced? A: right now we plan ps4 xone and pc release
Q: Will it be possible to take (offline) single-player saved games online, and if so, what proactive measures will Techland take to prevent game-save mods from disrupting the online multiplayer experience? A: as i said, multiplayer details will come in the future, those things are still under discussion
Q: Can we go and roam outside the city? A: Aiden wants to stay in the city
Q: my final question what is the virus called is it still called the harran virus A: well it's not in harran only anymore
Q: Is there some way to calculate just how many final outcomes you can get out of the game? Like in Detroit Become Human for example A: not really, not right now at least
Q: will screamers have more of a purpose then obstacle you have to get around A: they will be different this time
Q: Legend levels made the first game really easy so are they in dl2 or no ? and if they are there so is it balanced now or it will still make the game so easy ? A: legends levels are still under discussion as well
Q: Still another question about that charges... Will there be some visual and sensitive effects (like in Dying Light where the screens goes green and we dont have stamina)? A: yup, i think so at least
Q: Will there be more detailed animations for each thing we do? (If we activate our flashlight, Aiden would reach to his shoulder to turn it on) A: some things are speed up of course to not be annoying, but there will be more animations, like imagine having to reach the uv light for a 10000 time when volatile is at your face
Q: Will this channel remain so we can review all the previously stated questions? A: it will be closed but it will remain (i need to make QA out of it)
Q: Will it be possible to take (offline) single-player saved games online, and if so, what proactive measures will Techland take to prevent game-save mods from disrupting the online multiplayer experience? A: i responded to that with - no multiplayer details for now, I really don't have any info about it
Q: Can we ride horses ? A: nope
Q: Is korek in dl2? A: i dont think so
Q: anything to mention about Night hunters? A: night runners you mean? actually Aiden is the only man capable of reviving hte nightrunners caste
Q: wingsuit? A: maybe this will be one of the things we will be talking about - i mean, new traversal options
Q: Will we have the ability to pursue affections of NPC? Such as a friend meter, or even a lover? A: you will be able to interact with every single npc in the game - how? you will see
Q: Any building destruction in ds2? Like walls collapsing when you use explosives, would be cool A: just the last one - yes environment is destructible in some cases

Defiance 2050 PC Download
Defiance 2050 Beginner's Guide To Weapon Enhancement Vortainment
A lot of mobile games are frustrating fluff. With the minor issues in Defiance 2050 the game is really a lot a lot more playable and entertaining advancing your EGO level to max out is presently what makes items enjoyable. Taking on the main missions of the game to get those rewards at completion is also fun although some of the stuff you do more than and more than in the same area creating it a little boring. The game has a ton of side missions that you can play via how to download Defiance 2050 as nicely as the main mission. One good items as to purchased the founders pack is the enhanced XP you get from defeating enemies and finishing side missions and primary missions. For a person who is playing religiously you ought to obtain level 50 ego inside two days and absolutely everyone else who doesn't purchase the boost from the retailer it will possibly take at least a month of more.
Tumblr media
For these unfamiliar, Defiance 2050 and its predecessor are spin-offs from a Syfy original series, and the story missions do a lot to feel like they're carrying on a larger, wider story. However, as with numerous Syfy original series go, it feels a bit budget. The completely voice acted cutscenes and in-game calls from main defiance 2050 pc download characters are fine but feel a tiny wooden. Each of them seemingly isolated, with the cold sterility that comes from connecting to sound files together rather than feeling like two or a lot more persons in a tense circumstance sharing concepts.
We are thrilled to announce the subsequent chapter in the Defiance universe will be coming this summer to PlayStation four, Xbox One particular, and Computer in a massive on the Defiance 2050 pc download web sci-fi shooter we're calling Defiance 2050. Continue the fight by means of the vast world of Defiance, reimagined for the present generation of gaming hardware.
Subsequent, you get your 1st story mission. You have to engage the mutants, enemies of the Earth Republic (EREP), holed up on a ridge and taking pot shots at the EREP base with sniper rifles. This gives you your initial taste of what the average mission is like on Defiance 2050. Now, I'll say that when I initially played D13, this was about as far as I produced it. The aiming felt off, the enemies were unbalanced, and it just wasn't a enjoyable experience. This time around Defiance 2050 PC Download, though, I felt extremely engaged. I ran in, cleared the snipers, planted the bombs to take out the enemy ammo supplies (blowing myself up in the procedure) and defeated the boss at the finish. All in a day's function! It was challenging at occasions, but in the way that created finishing gratifying, rather than frustrating. You can absolutely see where the combat technique has been reworked for D50.
Tumblr media
I should also mention that the game does function microtransactions and loot boxes. However, the boxes themselves are purely cosmetic, and they are optional, which implies that they have no bearing on your gameplay whatsoever. Some of the cosmetics in fact looked pretty decent as well, and they're just there for players who want to make their character look a little more Defiance 2050 pc download special or distinct. On the other hand, the in-game shop also allows players to buy keys, which can be utilized to open chests for bonus loot. Keys can also be obtained by playing the game usually, but there is a slight pay-to-win aspect right here for players who just want to shell out some further money to get quick gear.
I was a fan of the Defiance television show in the course of its short run. It had every thing required to make a exciting sci-fi show, such as aliens, conflict, and tension of all sorts defiance 2050 pc download. So, it was sad to see that show was canceled as it got good, and Trion Worlds did a good job bridging the show and the game with each other to offer a fourth season in-game.
Beginning out in Defiance 2050, the intro is exactly the exact same as the old 2013 Defiance very same cutscenes, same story, and the exact same tutorial quests. Ignoring the replication, although, the tutorial does a excellent job of explaining the movements and mechanics of combat in Defiance. But, it Defiance 2050 pc download is evident early on that the combat and mechanics have also not been upgraded. The AI of enemies is not great, because they will not flank you or supply a huge challenge, it really is just a case of the number of enemies and a handful of charging foes that will run at you, causing you to roll away and get a tiny space.
Twenty years have passed given that the catastrophic Arkfall occasion left millions of Votans dead and Earth terraformed into a almost unrecognizable post-apocalyptic landscape. In Defiance 2050's version of San Francisco, players are transported to a dynamic open globe where they can explore and fight in skirmishes and story-driven missions on an epic scale. Players will engage in huge cooperative battles with their buddies, utilize hundreds of distinct weapons and skills, and take on massive alien threats as they discover transformed futuristic environments.
The massively-multiplayer-on the internet (MMO) title Defiance 2050 recently went live on each Xbox One particular and Computer platforms, but it has received a mixed reception across the board. The game has really a couple of troubles, however Defiance 2050 pc download, it is free of charge and it has redeeming qualities as effectively. Our Top Picks
Best Overall: Apex Legends
Tumblr media
No one quite knew what to make of Apex Legends when it was stealth released back in February 2019, on the same day as its announcement. But shortly thereafter, it took the digital world by storm. Going after the battle royale crown is a truly challenging conceit, but with a focus on strong gameplay and fluid controls, Apex Legends has quickly risen to the top of the pack, especially in the category of first-person shooters.
The premise is simple: 20 teams of three drop from a ship and land, picking up randomly generated loot as an ever-enclosing ring of death surrounds them. The goal is even simpler: survive, and win. Where the game shines is in its unique convergence of genres. It's hero shooter (see: Overwatch) meets battle royale (see: Fortnite), so while it features a diverse assortment of guns and character abilities, how you use them depends on your place in line ... waiting for death. After all, only one team comes out in top.
Most Popular: Fortnite
Tumblr media
If you are itching more for a third-person battle royale experience, then turn your head to the most popular video game in the world right now: Epic Games' Fortnite. While its premise is ubiquitous, after playing it you'll understand why. The creativity and freedom it encourages leads to a boatload of fun, no matter how many times you queue up a new game.
Setting the template for what a battle royale game really could be, Fortnite is fundamentally rock solid. Its main value proposition is the flow of frequent updates, with everything from game modes, new guns, vehicles, and surprise celebrity cameo appearances touching down weekly. Strong shooting mechanics, unique visuals, and stable gameplay are expected from a game of its popularity, and Fortnite delivers on all fronts.
Best Characters: Overwatch
Tumblr media
Overwatch was officially released to the public about three years ago ... although people have been playing it for longer than even that. First soft-launched (in closed beta) in 2015, Overwatch has been a mainstay of the current generation of consoles for quite a while now. And Blizzard, no stranger to supporting a game long into its life cycle, has felt no need to ever stop releasing new content, characters, and modes for Overwatch.
Now, some years later, the amount of pure content available to you within Overwatch is staggering. Still a multiplayer team-based shooter at its core, Overwatch now boasts an impressive amount of content for players to experience: dozens of maps, over thirty characters, and seven distinct modes, to name some. Even better? More content is still arriving at a steady pace for the game, and all of it is completely free to everyone. With so much to explore, it’s no wonder Overwatch remains one of the most popular shooters ever made.
Best Multiplayer: Call of Duty Black Ops IIII
Tumblr media
Variety is the name of the game when it comes to Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. Even with the developers at Treyarch foregoing a standalone campaign with the latest installment of their flagship franchise, you won’t be longing for content. There's enough to see, play, customize, unlock, explore, and share to keep you going for years. And that's before all the downloadable content in the pipeline.
Of course, there’s the flagship multiplayer mode, which is as polished and fun as ever. New additions this time around include predictive recoil and a specially enhanced ballistics mode, in addition to the change in the franchise’s standard regenerative health for a manual healing system. All these additions make for a more rewarding, engrossing experience. Combined with the return of the Black Ops series mainstay “Zombies” mode, and a full-fledged battle royale mode called “Blackout,” there’s more here than ever before for a Call of Duty title.
Best Tactics: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
Tumblr media
There’s a battle royale game for everyone, it seems, what with Fortnite’s more cartoony third-person aesthetic and Apex Legend’s fast-paced, sci-fi trappings. But for those looking for something a more traditional, you don’t have to look much further than the granddaddy of the genre itself: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). Launched in early access in March 2017, PUBG set the foundation for the genre.
But while others have moved onto the supernatural, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sticks to what it knows, with boots-to-the-ground combat, driving, and first-person shooter mechanics. However, in a genre like this, less is truly more, and the pure visceral experience of playing Pis enhanced by this realistic, no-frills approach. And with the game still being updated with new content, maps, and graphical upgrades on a frequent basis, there has never been a better time to jump back into the militaristic world of PUBG.
Best Visuals: Rage 2
Tumblr media
With its punk rock aesthetic and absolutely manic gameplay, Rage 2 has made a big impression on the first-person genre. Developer Id Software’s long-awaited sequel to the 2010 original is unlike any other shooter currently on the PlayStation 4. Its impeccable style gleams and oozes a funky good time, making it stand out amongst the crowd of more drab looking military fare.
In Rage 2, you play as a bespoke ranger who goes by the name Walker, fighting for survival in a world torn apart by an asteroid that ravaged the planet years earlier. Life is scarce, and what remains of humanity has been mutated into deranged mutants. Armed with telekinesis, not to mention a huge arsenal of weaponry and several vehicles at your side, it's up to you to keep some sanity in this deadly world.
Best Open World: Far Cry: New Dawn
Tumblr media
Ubisoft took a big swing when it released Far Cry: New Dawn. Unlike the Far Cry games of old, this sequel/spin-off takes place in a nuclear apocalypse following the shocking conclusion of Far Cry 5. You're set loose in this new iteration of Hope County, as a character known only as The Captain, on a quest to restore peace and order to the new world. Cults run wild, survivors need your help, and there's always the occasional mountain lion or bear to fend off while completing side quests and collecting missions.
Unlike most other games that take place in the midst of nuclear fallout, the world of Far Cry: New Dawn is not a bleak and grey one. In fact, the natural environment of the world is thriving after the initial fallout, with new types of flowers and vegetation springing up all over the place. And with the game’s huge open world at your disposal, you’ll have plenty of time to explore every nook-and-cranny of the new Hope County as you work your way through the game’s various collection of criminal bandits, crazed cultist, and everything in between.
Best Co-Op: Destiny 2
Tumblr media
The sequel to the loot-driven phenomenon Destiny, Bungie’s Destiny 2 once again throws you into a massive world of missions, weapons, and sci-fi cosmic enemies. Set in our solar system, your fireteam of three teammates quest to defend the last colony of Earthlings from evil alien menaces.
Building off the “shared universe” concept of the original game, you have the option to play the game completely PvE (player versus the environment) or PvP (player versus player), with both modes serving as a vehicle to reflexive gun handling and innovative RPG elements. However, the game truly shines the most in the PvE scenarios, in which you get to team up online with up to five other players in order to perform various mission and raids.
Best for Kids: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
Tumblr media
The breadth of shooters available on the PlayStation 4 aren’t just all gloomy, self-serious military simulators and mature shoot ‘em ups, or shmups. And for something a little more fantastical and kid-friendly, you can’t go wrong with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2.
A sequel to the original third-person shooter and a spin-off overall of the timeless Plants vs Zombies free-to-play mobile game, Garden Warfare 2 ups the ante from the previous entry in the franchise by adding new modes like Graveyard Ops, a Zombie-helmed take on the original’s Garden Ops, and Herbal Assault, which sees the zombies defending their base from a besieging horde of plants.
What to Look for in a PS4 Shooter Game
Free online multiplayer - Look for a PS4 shooter game that works online without PS Plus if you don’t subscribe to Sony’s premium online gaming service. Most PS4 games require an active subscription if you want to take them online, but there are some great options that let you play with, and against, your friends for free.
Virtual reality - If you have PlayStation VR, then you have to check out some of the great PS4 shooter games that are designed to work with Sony’s virtual reality headset. Playing a first-person shooter in virtual reality is a game-changing experience, and you can grab a PSVR Aim Controller for an even more immersive experience.
Open world - Most shooters are pretty linear in their campaigns, and multiplayer matches take place on relatively limited maps. If you want a break from that type of shooter, look for one that’s built on an open world, where you have a ton of freedom to go where you want and shoot what you want, on your own time.

Nintendo Direct Feb 2019 BREAKDOWN
So, that direct was pretty okay right? If you missed it or even if you didn’t, I’m gonna be taking a look at everything announced and giving it a vague excitement rating! Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Super Mario Maker 2
Tumblr media
This was a pretty great way to kick off this direct. With the promise of a host of new features coming in this entry to build upon the first, including the introduction of slopes (finally) and a new texture pack based on Mario 3D World, I reckon this is definitely one to mark in the calendar. Mario Maker 2 is slated for a, gratefully soon, June 2019 release.
Excitement Rating: YEEHAW
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
Tumblr media
The long awaited third entry in the MUA series, to the surprise of many, is in fact a Switch exclusive. For those who don’t know, this is a hack-and-slash fighting game, of course tied heavily to Marvel comics. This entry seems to be riding in off the back of Infinity War, with Thanos and the Black Order showcased as central villains. Honestly, this game looks like it could be fun, especially with friends, though I don’t think it’ll turn out to be anything special.
ER: Sure, why not!
BOX BOY! + BOX GIRL!
Tumblr media
This adorable little puzzle platformer is making its debut on Switch this spring, with the promise of local multiplayer and more levels than ever before. Looks to be a goodun for fans of cute, minimalist art design and box-based puzzles and the like.
ER: Cool! Those boxes can move!
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Ver. 3.0
Tumblr media
Nintendo sort of slapped us in the face with a lovely, welcome announcement of a new Smash update! Oh boy! New features! And then they turn around and say they aren’t gonna tell us what they are.
Oh.
Kind of makes me question the point of putting this in the direct a little, but I’m sure whatever they’ll add will be cool! On top of that, a tentative release window for Joker was given (before the end of April this year) and we got a cheeky look at some of the new spicy amiibos, being Snake, Simon and the Pokemon Trainer lot.
ER: Yay?
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker Updates
Tumblr media
Here’s one that definitely caught me offguard, but I’m more than happy with it considering I just picked up the game. Part of the new Captain Toad content is free, adding in proper 2 player co-op where you can both play as Toad. The paid ‘special episode’ stuff struck me as a little odd, considering this game was already a Wii U port that’s now getting even more paid DLC. Regardless, it’s not too pricey and you can even pick up the first DLC course now, with the rest coming March 14.
ER: That’s cool!
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Tumblr media
This not-quite-Castlevania game could easily be mistaken for a knock off of that franchise, but seems to have some defining elements of its own. The art style is bold enough to make it unique and the game seems to have an interesting variety of puzzles and side quests to make this more than just a run of the mill 2D platformer. An obvious choice for those with a Castlevania shaped hole in their hearts.
ER: You go bouncy vampire lady
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Tumblr media
What is basically just Dragon Quest Minecraft with a story mode apparently, this oddly charming sandbox game was seemingly popular enough to warrant a sequel. And I won’t lie to you, it got me a little excited. As a fan of Dragon Quest its art style and general building-ness, I think I might have to pick this one up. And it’s got a cool retro map!
ER: I’m not excited, you are
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition
Tumblr media
In case you hadn’t guessed, I literally adore Dragon Quest. The bright colours, the developed characters, the expansive world, awesome monster designs, great soundtrack and lame sense of humour, it all just gets me. It just sort of sucks I already own this on the PS4, where I can’t access all this new content. Oof. But yeah, pick this up if you can. You won’t regret it if you’re a JRPG fan.
ER: More like echoes of an exclusive age amirite
Disney Tsum Tsum Festival
Tumblr media
Oh.
I won’t lie to you right now, nothing screams ‘soulless’ to me more than small Disney plushes with all the personality taken from them being stuck into totally random minigames. Don’t get me wrong, I love Disney (mostly through Kingdom Hearts but that’s besides the point) but I don’t think this elicited much excitement in anyone.
ER: I guess this exists, huh?
Starlink: Battle for Atlas - Spring Update
Tumblr media
This was another one that surprised me. Considering how mind meltingly badly Starlink bombed, partly down to its odd reliance on the whole ‘toys to life’ craze that died out in 2013, I really didn’t think there’d be any further support for the game and they’d just sort of slip it under the rug. But nope, we’ve got some more Switch exclusive missions involving some more Star Fox characters, as well as the introduction of Wolf’s buddies. Honestly, I think Nintendo needs to do themselves a favour and just release a new Star Fox game.
ER: Great, if for some reason you bought this!
Rune Factory 4 Special & Rune Factory 5
Tumblr media
Here’s a series I’d literally never heard of until last Wednesday, but the only way I can describe it from what I’ve seen is it looks to be a cross between Animal Crossing and kind of also Dragon Quest. You cook stuff, you farm stuff, you fight things and you can get married if you want, so definitely cool if you’re a fan of the series. But also cool if you’re someone who wished Animal Crossing was a bit more JRPG. Alongside the announcement of a remastered Rune Factory 4 later this year, as well as confirmation of Rune Factory 5 sometime in the future.
ER: Cool! Plants and stuff!
Oninaki
Tumblr media
An action RPG with an intriguing premise and a rich, dark colour scheme, Oninaki seems very eager to set itself apart from other JRPGs on the market and still manages to stand out just a bit, even in a direct that’s basically been packed with JRPGs. Oninaki explores themes of reincarnation and grief, following the story of one grey-haired dude saving lost souls from a place called the Upside Down the Beyond to stop them from turning into monsters. Another one to add to the list if you like edgy RPGs!
ER: Edgy and cool
Yoshi’s Crafted World
Tumblr media
Another update for this adorably cardboard entry into the long running Yoshi series, we’re finally getting close to actually being able to play it. Nintendo showcased some of the more interesting variants of gameplay, with the use of rafts, cars and planes definitely making this seem that there’s some substance here to go with the style. Alongside this, a demo released on the eshop so go play that if you haven’t already and decide if it’s for you!
ER: Wow, this game has a Labo costume! I’ll definitely grind for that!
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Tumblr media
Finally some more info about Nintendo’s latest instalment in their anime Game of Thrones series Fire Emblem, we got a big ol infodump about some of the stuff to do with the game. While the video itself will explain everything better than I can, this time players will be able to interact with three kingdoms and three main protagonists, all of this centralising around one academy the game is set within. Overall, this game certainly looks interesting to play, but one I’m not quite sure I’ll be picking up just yet. Basically, if you’re unfamiliar with the games but love a tactical RPG, this one is a no brainer.
ER: Edelgard’s design is pretty cool. If one of them has to get into Smash, I hope it’s her.
Tetris 99
Tumblr media
The game many have been calling Tetris Battle Royale, this is the very first Nintendo Switch Online exclusive offering and it’s totally free if you’re a member. It’s Tetris and you have to win against 98 other people, also playing Tetris. Nice!
ER: Tetris block for Smash
Dead by Daylight
Tumblr media
As a game I got for free through Playstation Plus, it should be fairly obvious that this port isn’t one that excites me greatly, especially after seeing the quality of the graphics in the trailer the direct showed us. While the concept of an online match with several survivors and one killer sounds good on paper, it seems as if the quality of this port may leave a lot to be desired. But still, this could still only be early development footage and we really have no idea how it’ll look by the end.
ER: Tentative
Deltarune
Tumblr media
Undertale is one of my favourite games of all time, so of course it excited me to find out I’d finally be able to play the sort of sequel, Deltarune, which Toby Fox has taken in the interesting direction of splitting the game into chapters. The first of these chapters will be free (yay I like free) and it certainly seems like the same abstract sense of humour and charm present in Undertale has been carried over to this sequel. Definitely one to watch.
ER: Always excited about cartoon doggo
Daemon X Machina
Tumblr media
This mech-fighter has been floating around in various Nintendo directs for a fair while now and it’s encouraging to see the game come close to release. In a commendable move, the producer of the game has offered a free demo of the game allowing you to pilot your own custom mech and experience a boss battle in the demo known as ‘Prototype Missions’. The aim of this to gain feedback from potential players in order to make the game as good as it can be, which is amazing! It’s honestly a bit of a dream world where every game developer and publisher is as open and transparent as these guys, so kudos to them. As well as this, the game looks pretty heckin’ fun so it’s definitely worth picking up the demo off the eshop and giving these guys your feedback!
ER: Big ol’ robots hell yeah
GRID Autosport
Tumblr media
As of yet, the Switch has lacked a realistic racing game. Enter Grid Autosport, which seems to be packed with a variety of cars, tracks and game modes, including all DLC from the original release of the game. Not one for me, but I’m sure there’s plenty of Switch owners out there whose racing fix isn’t quite satisfied by Mario Kart.
ER: V big if ur a car person
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Tumblr media
This game was notably created in collaboration with neurologists and those who experience psychosis in order to properly portray the main character and her mental health struggles. Following the quest of Senua as she fights to save the soul of her dead lover, this game created a huge wave through the industry when it first launched and won major awards for its artistic design and performance. While this isn’t one I’ve had the chance to try yet, it certainly looks as if it provides a brilliant, emotional experience from beginning to end.
ER: A lot
Mortal Kombat 11
Tumblr media
This was one everyone basically already knew about, but this direct gave us a reminder of the release date and various features such as custom characters. For fans of this long running, brutal fighting game, get April 23 in ur brains.
ER: Cool
Unravel Two
Tumblr media
This adorable puzzle platformer sees you and, optionally, a friend take control of two little creatures made of yarn as they navigate a colourful world and help each other pass various obstacles. For those fans of platformers like the Yoshi series, Unravel is definitely one to consider.
ER: Cool
Assassin’s Creed III Remastered
Tumblr media
This is the iconic stealth fighting series Assassin’s Creed’s first outing on Switch, but if this footage is anything to go by, it’s not looking brilliant. While this once again could be put down to unfinished development, the first look at a game is often the most important, and a slow frame rate shown during the direct could mean this game isn’t what fans want it to be.
ER: Tentative
Final Fantasy Release Dates
Tumblr media
For fans of the legendary and slightly intimidating JRPG series, several games in the series both new and old will be coming to the Switch in 2019:
Final Fantasy VII on March 26th
Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! on March 20th
Final Fantasy IX is out now!
ER: Cloud is my favourite twink
Astral Chain
Tumblr media
Admittedly, at a first glance, this title in a brand new franchise didn’t particularly excite me. But after having another look, I can definitely see where all the hype is coming from. This looks to be a hack-and-slash sort of action RPG with all the edgy story elements and setpieces of that ever so popular steampunk genre that players seem to love these days. With all these mechs, explosions and edgy voiceovers, it makes me think that Xenoblade Chronicles and Deus Ex had some kind of torrid love affair. On top of this, with a dev team that has Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101 and NieR: Automata under their belt, this is a game that will almost certainly impress when it finally comes out on August 30. Platinum Games might just have another winner here.
ER: Big yes
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
Tumblr media
oKAY, let’s be real, this is the one that really knocked it out of the park. At least for me it did. As the final reveal, this made me scream a little tiny bit. I think we’d all heard the rumours of a 2D Zelda coming to Switch, but I was highly skeptical to say the least. But a wonderfully charming and artistically bloody P E R F EC T remake of Link’s Awakening?? HHHHHH. They even kept all the Mario enemies for some reason! Oh boy, whenever they release this in 2019 apparently really can’t come soon enough.
ER: AAAAAAAAAAAAA
That was all for this direct! I hope you enjoyed my silly, unplanned breakdown of all the cool things that happened. Til the next direct!
Oh and if you’ve got a craving for more game news, be sure to check back on my blog March 1st for the second ‘issue’ (lol) of my monthly viddy game mag!
Stay hydrated my dudes.

Some ideas for the future of Destiny
Under the cut cos this is a long piece
So I have been an avid Bungie fan for a long time, back in the Halo 2 days. I thought D1 was fine and was hesitant to jump into D2, only done it recently. And while I am fully aware I am a nameless nobody, I like writing and I like game. I want D3 or the future of Destiny to do well if it comes out. So I thought I would beat the rush and throw some of my ideas into the abyss of the Internet. I hope you like it.
QUALITY OF LIFE FIXES These are just small things I think would help improve the experience.
You're Fireteam should appear in cutscenes with you if they are there. GTA Online managed to do it. Destiny has always been hyped as a multiplayer experience, and as a result it feels really weird to do fights with a Fireteam who just vanish for the cutscenes. It also created a huge problem in D2 where you were the only Guardian who had their light, except for all the other ones that you played with. It was less of a shared story and more of a shared world with a single player story. Even if this was done in a little way, like the Fireteam leader did the main actions in the cutscene and the others are shown doing small things in the background like guarding a door, gesturing to each other (with one pointing out something to the other), or reacting to what is being said.
Let us buy more Ammo and Guns. Destiny 1 had this right with it both being purchasable and dropping in the world, it makes the tower feel more alive and then you don't end up in scenarios where you run out of ammo on your secondary and tertiary weapons and none drop.
Have people acknowledge your race. I mean it's good that they acknowledge your class but they should at least make reference to the fact you are Exo or Awoken or Human. Just small things.
Let us turn our characters around in the creation menu! I had an awful haircut that I hated in D1 because I couldn't see the back of my Awoken's head. It sucked. I hated it.
Speaking of, don't limit hair and paint to certain races and Genders. This excludes The Exo who should keep their robot bits, they might look a bit odd boltd on the side of my fleshy Awoken. You could in theory double up the amount of Exo customization to make up for this, but that would be Bungie's choice.
Third Person mode. We got attractive armour and shaders, let us see them. Nuff said.
BIGGER CHANGES
Fix Skill Trees. Okay so Destiny is suppose to be an MMORPG or at least an MMOFPS with RPG elements. Why do we have such limited ways to play. For an example on how I would do this, is Assassin's Creed Origins. Rather than have Seer, Hunter, and Warrior, you would have the Void, Arc, Solar abilities and you could spec in any and multiple directions while picking one as the "Primary" Super ability. Are you a Hunter with the Arc Staff but want to also use the Swarm Grenade and the Smoke ability? You can. Titans with the shield wall, Hammer of Sol and Lightning Grenade. Warlocks with a Healing Rift, a Stormtrance and Vortex Grenade. It would allow individuals to truly feel unique than just another Gunslinger/Voidwalker/Defender.
Fix the customisation. Destiny is literally awful at customisation. We live in a world with Fallout 76 and Dragon Age Inquisition level of customisation, even GTA does it better than Destiny does. Sliders really do matter for customisation, rather than a very limited set of customisation options. Also while you are at it, let us change our hair and war paint at a hairdressers or tattoo shop. You could add more in updates to further drive engagement and get people coming back.
A free camera mode. Come on Bungie, you practically pioneered it in Halo 3. Remember how the Machinima community exploded in Halo 3 and Reach and all that free advertising? Remember the WOW Machinima scene? Imagine if you could combine these. Furthermore look at the success Spiderman for PS4 has with its photo mode, there's a whole Subreddit dedicated to it. Destiny is beautiful. Let me enjoy it, also let me make Machinima again because 343 ruined it in Halo.
Player trading. I have an ornament for No Turning Back, my friend has No Turning Back. He doesn't want it, I do. I have to wait for the RNG to favour me. While this might lower engagement by having the ability to trade items to friends it would raise fun. Although Destiny is built around the loot and a trade system could mess this out you could fix this, maybe you can only trade once both people have finished the game?
I also have a story idea since I find the story in Destiny to be, undeveloped in certain ways. You don't have to read this if you don't want too, just a bit of speculative fan fiction.
PLOT IDEA
Act 1 starts with you and your Fireteam at the top of the world, you and your Fireteam are powerful and you seem to be close to finally saving the galaxy from the Darkness of the universe, capturing the big leaders of each faction. The Guardians are a tad bit cocky at this point, even taking a trophy from the Hive leader. However, near the end of Act 1 a big escape attempt is made by the capture aliens, and right at the end in the middle of the battle, The Traveller leaves. As a result, The Cable, The Vex and The Fallen follow it and Earth is left relatively safe.
Act 2 begins with a panic in the tower, Guardians can feel their powers slowly dropping and they are not happy. The Vanguards decide to send a group of Guardians out in the galaxy with only one goal, like the other species, find the Traveller and bring it home. Act 2 sends you and your Fireteam throughout The Galaxy, following what seems to be like a trail of breadcrumbs. Little pockets of power on new worlds. Every time you land on a new world, you set up a small base at your landing sight and NPC's who came with you set up shops. The Guardians becoming convinced that The Traveller had been stolen and was trying to leave a trail for them to follow. These breadcrumbs can be used to temporarily boost The Guardians powers, and introduce the new abilities. Finally, the trail runs cold but The Ghost discovers that the Vex seem to know where the Traveller is. The Guardians capture a member of the Vex and probe through the Vex hive mind, before discovering a horrible secret. The Vex are Humans. This specific one is a Human that the Guardians knew. Humans from a timeline where they never get their abilities back, and in a desperate attempt to keep some force of powers they converted themselves and ultimately travelled back in time in a power obsessed craze in order to try and harness the power of the Traveller and bring it to the future. After this, The Guardians finds the Traveller who has been found on a new world.
Act 3 focuses on trying to free The Traveller from this new species (New Guardians) who stole is power. You work on destabilising their society, while fighting off The Fallen, Cabal, and Vex. Eventually The Guardians push their way through to the Traveller, desperately fighting off the New Guardians while losing their power. Killing anyone who opposes them. However, when they reach The Traveller, a battered and damaged Guardian reaches out to try and regain their power. However, they fall to the ground and The Hive trophy tumbles out of their clothing. They pick it up, and stare at it. Finally realising that The Guardians have begun to worship and abuse The Travellers power like The Hive does with The Darkness. They finally understand that The Traveller didn't get stolen, but disgusted by what they saw in The Guardians chose to leave. They finish their quest learning the truth and lower their weapons against the New Guardians. Only when they understand and leave does The Traveller reach out to them to share its power with The New and Old Guardians, and the two generations of hero learn to live in harmony.
PLOT IDEA END
I really like Destiny and I want to love it, this is just the way I would do it personally.
I hope you all enjoyed the read.

Uncommon Article Gives You the Facts on Fallout 76 That Only a Few People Know Exist
Most Noticeable Fallout 76 Tackling Fallout 76 solo differs. It was never particularly stable to start with, but with Fallout 76, it is very unstable. Fallout 4 had a very good awareness of loot progression. Ultimately, many players that are engaging with Fallout 76 wish to reside in a wasteland at the place where they can participate in PvP, but it's an underdeveloped system. Since you may see, the game isn't really well-defined. This game is currently on my Radar, although I feel I will give the distinctive edition a miss. You need to have made multiplayer a choice for folks who want the single player experience and you ought to have added the prospect of co-op or at least basic multiplayer rather than figuring it out at a subsequent moment. You and friends and family can construct a survival settlement with each other, help different players, or even get into some kind of conflict with different players you encounter. Nukes are essentially a brilliant spin on the thought of end-game dungeons or raids. You're able to play alone or with a little group of friends, but there is going to be a lot of folks playing in the identical world as you. In games like DayZ, you truly feel nervous once you find a new player since there's the possibility they may assist you, or else they might just try and murder you for your supplies. It is not the worst game on earth or anything, but nonetheless, it very much just exists. Life, Death, and Fallout 76 There are not many solo-player Charisma cards, since the majority are created for team play. They have the ability to build wherever and whenever assuming they have the resources to do so. Killing the marked player will end in higher-than-normal rewards. The Advantages of Fallout 76 The Fallout 76 site was updated with a new developer post that provides players a little information about a massive patch which is going to be deployed on January 14th. Bethesda is arranging a number of new content also. They will get to play the game via a beta which has been revealed to begin in October, just one month prior to launch. What You Don't Know About Fallout 76 Firstly, the only means to get access to the beta is to pre-order the game. Unlocking items to build is also quite slow. Nuclear codes don't work unless you've got the complete key, which means you will have to collect multiple. Assuming that it's going to run for a couple weeks, and Bethesda will subsequently need at the very least a couple of months before the November release, it appears likely that it may begin quite soon. Because in the event the dev team at Bethesda want to have a thing which everyone loves and do something different with it, I need to encourage that. Fallout 76 brings the nuclear wasteland on the internet, and in case you have friends to play with, it is sometimes an excellent time. Dads must locate a positive approach as a way to be viewed in family court as a peaceful individual. There's still enjoyable to be had poking around its desolate Earth, and it's certainly simpler to do with a couple friends in tow. On the contrary, it focuses on domestic life in the vault. Maybe you are confusing me with another person. Quests ought to be interesting, character driven affairs that provide the world meaning, and provide your avatar an objective. Textures take that important couple of additional seconds to load even if you're up close, in third person your character appears like it was constructed from an upmarket mannequin, and your enemies have the exact same type of rigidity. There are different phases of grief you'll experience on the way. Sometimes all 3 things are there. There's somewhat of a bigger narrative on the job but like previousFalloutgames, sometimes you might want to accept some side quests instead. If something terrible happens, you've got to live with this. This quest will go over all this, for each and every quest in all the regions found within this nuclear Appalachia. The monster looks dormant at the present time, but one of its tentacles twitches as you go into the room, like it notices your presence. Get the Scoop on Fallout 76 Before You're Too Late The character creator is likewise very detailed, permitting you to produce and change your character in a huge number of details. While it can be stunning to examine, the graphics feel off. Players might have to devote a varying amount of points on cards, dependent on initial price. The outside is in good shape. There's no need to submit an application for the totally free games, either. If you're likely to pre-order Fallout 76, you will want to contemplate this amazing collector's edition. The shooting in the game feels a bit clumsier than Fallout 4, but it's further limited as you are supposed to shell out as much time with a couple boring weapons. A couple of bobby pins should not weigh a complete pound. Each time you level up you get to choose a single card to put money into. The Importance of Fallout 76 It might not look like it is for everyone but if Bethesda is devoted to improving the experience then I'm on board to observe where it's going. Fallout 76 shows some refinement to older systems which make playing alongside friends a really great time like trading for greater gear and shelters. however, it's at the price of a balanced single-player experience. According to Eurogamer, the presence of the room was circulating on Reddit for a couple days now, but had been known by some individuals for numerous weeks. Fallout 76 for Dummies The world is full of unique items which you can come across and scrap, permitting you to develop new armor and weapons on the way. Early on I managed to drop a house base virtually anywhere so long as the build area did not infringe on any present solid structures. Rounding out the latest update is a couple of balance tweaks, and a very long collection of bug fixes.

When fighting alongside friends, a teammate has an opportunity to revive you before you really die. The player must not forget, however, that such opportunity will entice enemies hungry for booty. What the In-Crowd Won't Tell You About Fallout 76 In Bethesda's newest game, there are a variety of recipes littered across West Virginia that could give Vault Dwellers an opportunity to combat the hunger and thirst that's prevalent in Fallout 76. Nukes are essentially a great spin on the notion of end-game dungeons or raids. Bethesda has said again and again that they were planning to provide private servers post-launch. A number of the geometrical glitches related to the workshops are fixed, so you do not have to wall-glitch to reach them when they spawn underground. Most of all, Vault 76 was among the acontrol vaults. If Fallout 76 adds anything in the close future to produce the game feel as a community, it needs more quests similar to this. The Basic Facts of Fallout 76 Adrenal Reactionincreases your weapon damage and provides you health generation once you hit low HP. Obviously it is not possible to experience each and every change, but the most significant changes come in the shape of performance and stability, where Bethesda notes that various client and server-side changes are made to enhance the general stability of the game and boost the functioning of the game across numerous end-user systems. 3 out of 5 If you like multiplayer games of this kind and are ready to overlook the engine anomalies, you might find yourself rapidly hooked on the game's exploration density and loot systems. The Hidden Facts on Fallout 76 To begin with, the fake post either needs to be flagged by a definite number of users or the firm's automated software. For me, the webpage wouldn't even load. From the right time of posting this short article, the B.E.T.A. is going to be released for PC in 5hrs. Streaming your favourite shows on Netflix will cost you more, just like it is going to cost Netflix more to continue to keep their bandwidth. Ruthless Fallout 76 Strategies Exploited Seriously it is a huge ol' wearable helmet. It's obvious which properties are receiving sequels, but it's hard to predict which dormant franchise could earn a return. Instead of simply choosing perks, you've got a number of different perk cards to select from. The movement of the Goose, the adaptive score and general charm of this game must be experienced to get the entire idea but for the time being you may take a look at the trailer below. As the trailer wraps up, we get a broader look at the vault which makes it clear a gigantic party has occurred. Nothing concerning this game is logical. There were still quite a few things that Bethesda had promised that it wasn't likely to deliver. The truly sad part about it's that story is the main thing Bethesda is notorious for executing successfully on. If you don't like playing with different people, you may also go through the title by yourself. The standard of an item also translates to the standing of the provider. So it's the gaming industry which affects the amount of computer chips, the access to software engineering jobs, etc. Given the size and assortment of the levels, it is a difficult call. At any rate, because you can likely guess, a reasonable bit of controversy has erupted over the topic. Rather than being strange bedfellows, you'll now be given the opportunity to move everything to a totally new location at no cost. Unfortunately, all great things must come to a conclusion. How to Get Started with Fallout 76? Virtually every feature people have started to anticipate from the previous three Fallout games has been downgraded. At the same time that you can play solo, all the gameplay videos shown so far suggest it would be difficult to survive very long without a couple friends by your side. At present, official details on the approaching game continue to be slim. Locate the subcategory titled Notes and you ought to have the ability to locate the recipes you have picked up. For those who haven't played these games, then you should give them a go. It is among the best games in its genre. While Fallout 76 is multiplayer-oriented, you don't need to take part in player-versus-player combat in case you don't wish to. Fallout 76 is a totally online game so that you won't be in a position to manually save your progress, thus you ought to make sure once you do leave the game you visit the `Main' menu and select `Quit Game'. Fallout 76 is a prequel to the full franchise. As of right now, there isn't any sure-fire procedure to do away with mutations. A player character can have several mutations simultaneously. Some players have needed to drain their health several times before obtaining a mutation, while some say they've had success cooking and eating low heights of irradiated food and obtained a mutation by using their health mostly intact. Some radiation protection gear may also lower the possibility of a mutation. If you wish to lower the odds of obtaining a mutation, simply wear radiation protection gear like a Hazmat Suit or a Gas Mask. If you currently have that Mutation, the Serum will temporarily suppress the negative impacts of the mutation and boost the positive outcomes. One other great facet is the way multicultural Melbourne is. A sign states that the occasion is known as Reclamation Day. Now you have to search for some notes around Bolton Greens.

Is Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel a good Trading Card Game or another mobile disappointment?
Tumblr media
Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel is the latest in the franchise's long-running history. Yu-Gi-Oh is one of those games I always keep coming back to. Mostly since I grew up watching the show and collecting the cards themselves. I spent many months meticulously crafting decks using my limited cards so that I could duel my friends at school. I play pretty much all the games as well, with Refresh of Destruction on the GBA being a standout for me personally. But does Master Duel capture that same magic? Or is it another predatory mobile port?
Chapter 1: More Money, More Mobile
We need to address the elephant in the room first and foremost. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is without a doubt, a free-to-play mobile-first experience. I don't blame Konami for continuing down this part, as the mobile game Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links reintroduced a lot of my friends who fell off the Yu-Gi-Oh bandwagon back to the franchise as a whole. I also enjoyed casually playing Duel Links in between life. However, that game had all the trappings of a standard Mobile experience. Which - again - is understandable.
Other games in the space, such as Riot Games’ Legends of Rune Terra, and Wizards on The Coast's Magic the Gathering, have a proven track record with mobile-first TCG games. It would make all the sense for Konami to emulate it.
Master Duel does in fact share a significant amount of DNA with its siblings. However, at this point, Konami has this down to a T.
Chapter 2: I'm certainly not meeting you for the first time
Master Duel has a robust tutorial, that for someone like me - who hasn't played Yu-Gi-Oh too seriously for many years now, can quickly pick up the new mechanics that were introduced and has since become standard. The game opens with a bare-bones tutorial that teaches you the absolute basics of the game, and then it drops you into a game unguided for you to then win.
Once you're completed with that you get to pick one of three starter decks. I only knew about the Blue-Eyes Dragon deck, so obviously, I did the most natural thing and chose the dick that I'm not used to.
The game's mobile-first approach shows up once again as once the basic tutorial is completed, you only now begin to download the game's actual files.
Chapter 3: Oh no,... I'm enjoying it
Like many Yu-Gi-Oh games that came before, the game often highlights things that you can interact with or cards that have fulfilled the requirements for their effects. This was great for me since I struggle to remember what the card's effects are since I'm only now seeing many of these cards for the first time.
The duels are visually appealing and for the most part, it marks everything clearly. When you issue the final blow there is this amazing effect where the attack slows down, and a huge explosion happens. Honestly amazing.
During your draw phase, the game will make you drag the card from the deck, and this was more satisfying to do than I originally thought.
Every monster card that has a special summon often explodes onto the entire screen making sure you know a powerful monster just entered the battlefield.
This music, my god this music. It is always so epic. It is a mix between Egyptian and European Medieval, and once it gets going, oh it goes!
Tumblr media
The solo mode also has cutscenes that describe a contained story between missions. In these solo missions, you typically are given a demonstration of how a card works then you're dropped into a real duel with that deck. Upon winning it, you get the ending of the cutscene and new cards. You also get these orbs which are used to unlock side quests in each mission, which unlocks more cards.
I've mostly spoken about the Solo mode thus far. Multiplayer is where the heart of the game is. And while they give you the option to create your own lobby and play against your friends, the ranked mode is where most people might want to spend most of their time.
However, in the lower ranks, where everyone is forced to start, duels can last upwards of 20 minutes. I played three matches and after each one, I needed to take a step back because duels slow down when you're playing ranked. Far more than I thought. Maybe games go faster in the higher ranks, I don't know yet.
Chapter 4: This is the most amount of digital money I've ever held (ignore the time I lost 1K in dogecoin back in the day)
Now we come to the second biggest aspect: The Cash Show. Thankfully Master Duel seems to be very generous with the game's currency - gems. There are other hidden currencies, but the only way to receive them is to find them when opening packs or in solo mode.
However, the game incentivises you to spend the gems that you earn in-game. How? They are capped at 10K Gems that you can hold at any given point. Gems bought with real money have no limit.
The individual card packs cost 100gems which is ~2USD and it does seem fair. There is also a duel pass which costs 750 gems. You Can use your free gems to pay for these though, which is what I did.
The Hidden Currency is what is known as 'Legacy Ticket' which you can exchange for card packs feature cards from the anime and older games.
The shop also has structure decks for 500 gems. The game also offers game boards, game critters that sit on your board and reacts to game events in cute and cool ways. There is even a dark magician one. You can also buy icons that appear next to your name, and protectors - which are just the card backs.
There are limited bundles that offer 10 packs plus a specific card for 750 gems. Which are 250 gems less than what you would pay for it if you bought 10 packs by themselves. These are great for players just hopping in and getting started.
When you open packs, it will highlight the rare, super rare, and ultra-rare cards. The store is also required by law in some countries to show the odds of getting certain cards, so they include that on the main page for each pack.
Tumblr media
When you open packs, there is a chance to discover secret packs, which will then make them available to purchase for 24 hours. Which is kind of odd, but okay, I guess. You can also find secret packs in the game's Solo mode, and it also has a 24-hour limit. Honestly, the sheer number of secret packs you find, especially when you are buying a 10 pack is often overwhelming.
I spent close to 6k gems, and I still have 7k. Kudos to Konami for making the early game satisfying, but games like this need at least 5-10 hours to really figure out if the cash shop/currencies are predatory or not. this is a TCG after all.
However, this game is Yu-Gi-Oh and there are literally thousands of cards you can collect and build decks from that each has its own strengths, weaknesses, and synergy. So, expect to put in a lot of time into this game if you enjoy it.
Chapter 5: Its fun, but casual
Despite the fun aspect of the game, there is still a sense of being overwhelmed with this game. I struggled for a bit trying to figure out how to use my decks, and there seem to be so many decks you can choose from. My advice here is just to pick a deck you like and just use it. Unless it’s a bad deck, you're statistically guaranteed to win ~50% of the time.
Once you figure out this deck to the point where you no longer must think, then move on. I jumped around many decks trying to figure out what I liked and ultimately became frustrated since so much of each deck has so many different synergies, that I wasn't learning quickly enough.
If you play the game casually, you'll have a lot of fun.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
A fun TCG game that on the surface has a decently balance cash shop. The solo missions are fun, and though the ranked mode does take time to complete, it was still fun visually. If you're a latent fan of Yu-Gi-Oh I recommend you download it and take it for a spin.
