The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)

A few movies that have fallen into the public domain like Nosferatu and Night of Living Dead can be found for pennies - or even free - but with big studios flexing their muscles over copyright laws, most of what's been abandoned no one could enjoy. When The Little Shop of Horrors began, the scratchy picture and muddy sound made me think this was yet another public domain dumpster dive. It's the complete opposite. The Little Shop of Horrors is a hilarious dark comedy full of big laughs. Though not on the same level as the 1986 remake, it shouldn’t need the gimmicky callout of Jack Nicholson in a small role to entice you to watch it.

Hopeless Seymour (Jonathan Haze) works in a florist shop and his days there are numbered. In a desperate attempt to generate more business for his boss, Gravis (Mel Welles), Seymour brings in an odd-looking plant to draw passers-by's attention. "Audrey Jr." - named after his beautiful co-worker (Jackie Joseph) - is a hit but unfortunately, it requires human flesh and blood to survive.

There are points where this extremely low-budget production is rough around the edges. Anytime Audrey Jr. moves, it's not convincing. You'll hardly care. This film is good enough it's worth searching for a good print even when the alternative is free. Although I laughed plenty, I know I would've enjoyed it even more if it were on a good-quality DVD or Blu-ray. We’ve got a slew of memorable and funny characters (my favorite being a man who buys flowers to eat them) populating a nice blend of horror and comedy. The screenplay has much to offer with clever wordplay, slapstick, plenty of dark humor when a sadistic dentist enters the scene (played by John Shaner), and mouth-watering dark turns once Audrey Jr. starts getting really hungry.

I wish I could say more, but I was robbed of a better experience thanks to the cheap presentation I sat through. I missed some of the dialogue but still recognize this for the cleverly written and imaginative picture that it is. I can’t express enough how pleasant of a surprise this was. It’s almost a shame the remake is so good because it means this original has been largely forgotten. It deserves more attention than it's receiving. (On DVD, June 11, 2015)
