'The Golden Girls' debuted 37 years ago today. This beloved series ran from 9/14/85 to 5/9/92, leaving us with 180 episodes that span 7 seasons. Our Lucille has a bit of a connection to this very popular show. During the first season of 'The Golden Girls', the producers wanted Lucille to guest star as Rose's sister Lily in the 'Blind Ambitions' episode. As we all know, that role went to Polly Holliday. Although Lucille and Gary were both fans of the show, Lucille declined, citing an impending dental procedure. In the book, 'Golden Girls Forever: An Unauthorized Look Behind the Lanai', Lucille's longtime friend, Thomas Watson, said there was another reason why Lucille decided to pass on the guest spot. Having just starred as a homeless woman in 'Stone Pillow', Lucy wanted her next project to be funny to satisfy her fans. "Lucy was afraid that having her name on the 'marquee' alongside those of Bea Arthur and Betty White, audiences would expect a delightful laughfest," Tom explains. And unfortunately, the role of Rose's blind sister "was anything but sidesplittingly funny." Lucy was also a guest in the studio audience for the taping of the GG episode 'Joust Between Friends'. Gremlins (1984)

Joe Dante’s Gremlins sets the logs on fire just as Santa is climbing down the chimney but there are just enough cute or funny moments to make it feel strangely wholesome and uplifting despite the holiday carnage. With memorable creatures, iconic scenes, terrific special effects, and long hearty laughs, you might feel kind of bad about watching a movie in which an old lady is sent to her death by being thrown out of a window around the season of giving… but not for long.

Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) offers his teenaged son Billy (Zach Galligan) a special Christmas present: a “mogwai” named Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandell). Sweet and gentle, the creature is an instant best friend, but make sure you follow the rules: Don’t expose it to bright lights or sunlight (that’ll kill it), don’t get it wet, and never feed it after midnight.

At first, this could be any other Christmas story. The struggling family whose father means well but can never quite get things right, the mom (Frances Lee McCain) who humors her husband no matter what, the son who works hard every day to make sure the ends are met. He’s got to contest with the meanest lady in town, Mrs. Deagle (Polly Holliday), who might as well be a cross between the Wicked Witch of the West and Mr. Potter from “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Then we’re introduced to Billy’s new best friend, an adorable furry creature that’s not unlike E.T. Suddenly, he’s got the stones to ask Kate (Phoebe Cates) out on a date, and with Christmas coming, things are going to be alright. Except there’s something off about this whole thing. The bank doesn’t care that December 25th is coming and if you ask Kate, Santa Claus has been dead for years. The snowplow operator (Dick Miller) is a little more apprehensive about foreign vehicles than he should be - even for a WWII veteran. Things might’ve started nice but one little push and all hell breaks loose.

And boy does it. So much of this movie's fun comes from the three rules Billy is given. You know all three will get broken. The question is, what will the consequences be? If you don’t already know, you’re in for a treat. Loads of comedic terror in unexpected ways with the newly-dubbed “gremlins” turning into demonic versions of the bad kids from Disney’s Pinocchio. Smoking, drinking, throwing darts, vandalizing every machine they can get their claws on like only supernatural creatures could, they’re having a blast being bad, which means you do too. There’s a little gremlin inside all of us and knowing that many parents in 1984 were upset after showing "Gremlins" to their children makes you smile even wider.

The story effortlessly shifts between horrific and hilarious. You laugh at scenes that in any other movie would have you spilling your popcorn - and then look forward to more. When you think the movie’s done, it begins satirizing or embracing the tropes of the films it reminds you of - everything from It’s a Wonderful Life to The Blob, and even some Disney movies. Its sense of humor makes the film stand the test of time but don’t disregard the terrific special effects either. You can tell all of these creatures were real props handled by the actors and that tactile feel adds another layer of magic.

Gremlins is a blast to watch. It's sweet and sour too, a great way to add a bit of variety to your Christmas movie marathon. You’ll be glad to return to it over and over. (On Blu-ray, December 13, 2020)
