So I'm working on a whole series of lore drawings for this place but I'm nowhere near finished with them, so here's a sneak peek at the designs for the Essex Arms inn in my 18th century gangs wip™️. It opened in 1703 on what was then a random country road in Co. Down, Ireland, operated for a long time by a man whose son, unable to continue keeping it and wanting to go into the navy, sold it to Edward "Lazarus" McClure in 1784. Lazarus bought it at the time entirely to have an excuse not to go back to his detested father, but it's slowly become His Actual Job and therefore he spends most of his time tending it.

It's nominally co-owned by a former soldier called David Jackson. The main reason for that is because Lazarus is often called away on business, and so there needs to be someone who can run it in his stead, do the paperwork, etc. In practice, most of the time David's main job is the cooking, as well as coordinating the bootleg gin trade going on in the establishment that Lazarus pretends not to see. He DEEPLY resents this.

There are several other employees, the most permanent of which are an unflappable maid called Eleanor and two barmaids called Sarah and Molly. There are a couple of stable boys called Wilbur and Andy. They have about the highest mortality rate for barmen in the country -- there was the lad from Lisburn for a while, but he caught typhoid and died; then the lad with the really short hair, but he met an unfortunate end while trying to deescalate Lazarus' evil ex Titus; then the lad who was kicked by a horse; then the lad who was devoured by the pigs; then the lad who works there at the start of the story, but he's unnamed and [REDACTED] not very far in and is replaced with a friend-of-a-friend called Henry "Joffre" Fenner. It's a pretty good place to work, the pay is fair and the living quarters could be a lot worse. The main issue is honestly that the bosses both have something deeply wrong with them

I sometimes get into moods where all I want to read is a very specific kind of longform disaster journalism, which attempts to reconstruct the feelings and thoughts of the people who were there for it at the time. These are the best examples of the genre I’ve found so far. Let me know if you have recommendations.

Be aware that these articles contain intense descriptions of danger and death (including suicide), though none have graphic photos (with the exception of The Falling Man, which shows the eponymous photograph).

Snow Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek, John Branch, New York Times, 2012

I put this first because it’s my favorite on the list. Sixteen skiers and snowboarders ski out-of-bounds at a resort in Washington state, with tragic consequences. An exploration of peer pressure and risk management, with excellent multimedia supplements.

A Sea Story, William Langewiesche, The Atlantic, 2004

Who survives a disaster? The MS Estonia took less than 45 minutes to sink, taking 852 of the 989 people onboard with it. This article explores the events of the Estonia’s final night and how a routine ferry trip could have gone so wrong.

Fatal Distraction, Gene Weingarten, The Washington Post, 2009

Probably the most famous on this list, this article won a Pulitzer in 2010 for good reason. What could cause a parent to forget their child in the car?

The Falling Man, Tom Junod, Esquire, 2016

I was only 10 when 9/11 happened, so I was shielded from a lot of the horror of that day. This article, about a photo that was published and then all but expunged from the record is about America’s complicated relationship to the tragedy and to death itself.

Prologue: This is set vaguely in the 1830s, all the situations are made up, if someone knows more than me about certain historical things and wants to correct me, feel free, just try to be nice

McClures:

Henry

· Listen, he’s not a bad father, he’s just not a great father either

· He’s mediocre

· Not a ton of character, he’s basically elderly

· He marries his wives as an attempt to give his children a mother

· Very unlucky

· His first wife=no children

· Second wife=Ada Noreen

· Third wife=Silas + Jeremy

· Fourth wife=Daniel

· He and Patsy have certain inside jokes that they don’t even really need to say, they just look at each other and understand

Daniel

· Twelve

· All the classic twelve-year-old-boy things of thinking youre the best in the world at everything no matter what

· Really, he can be unpleasant.

Coxes

James

· Very, very proud of his children

· Believes he raised them well (he did)

· He was greatly involved in the child rearing

· He and Molly agreed that their children should all know how to run the farm as well as cook, clean, and care for their own clothes

· Loves his wife Gomez Addams style, where he just thinks she’s honestly amazing and deserves to be revered

Molly

· Whip-smart

· Taught all her children how to do the “women’s work”

· So very proud of them

· Really loves her husband

James

· Honestly, this kid is so creative

· He doesn’t talk a lot, sometimes his words just stop working, but he really likes to draw

· He has a sketchbook crammed with drawings of flowers and other people and trees and sometimes local wildlife

· He draws portraits of people for 12 ½ cents per person in the portrait

· It’s shockingly profitable

· He doesn’t always get along very well with other people his age, but Martin Zimmermann and Silas McClure both took a liking to him

Whetstones:

Jasper

· A mushy ketchup and onion sandwich of a person

· He thinks his wife is a worthless waste of space and lets her know this at least once a day

· He keeps them in consistent poverty through drinking

· He told his wife that everyone has sex “just to try it” before they decide they want to court someone in the hopes of impregnating her because he knew she preferred Henry Andrews to him, and Jasper wanted her.

· He knows that Phoebe is certainly Henry Andrews’ child, and that any of their children other than Dorcas might belong to Henry Andrews as well

· His liver is slowly dying from overdrinking and he will die before Otis turns fifteen

· This will be a blessing to all involved

Sarah Fern

· Some women choose “strong capable woman”, others have “strong capable woman” thrust upon them

· She had it thrust upon her

· She hates her family and thinks sometimes about running away

· When the mail comes, she always gets a mysterious letter from H.A. inviting her to join him in Illinois

· She cries sometimes about this

· She wishes her children had never been born because she thinks this isn’t the life any of them deserve

· Several pregnancies occurred after Otis, but were terminated using herbs to trigger miscarriage

· Her life is one long tragedy, but she refuses to kill herself because she doesn’t want to leave her children alone with Jasper, especially not the younger ones

Dorcas

· Twenty-one, and very annoyed that she isn’t married

· Wants James Cox

· Will not end up getting married, will end up drinking “medicinal” wine in her early thirties, will end up flirting with men half her age by the time she’s 40

Charity

· Dorcas but seventeen

· And somehow worse

· Because Dorcas knows when to stop

· But Charity knows that the only way to get attention in her family is to be more outlandish and annoying than the last person that spoke

· And thus, Charity

Phoebe

· You could spill soup in her lap and she’d probably apologize to you

· Fifteen and one half (she has to be, after all, Jasper was out of town when she would have been conceived if she were fifteen years old even)

· Never mind that she looks a whole lot like Henry Andrews, who left the village not long after she was born

· She listened to her parents fight over her for years and now wants to make peace between everyone ever

Fern

· Twelve

· Y’all can leave, this kid could take over the world and be fine

· She once got her dad to stop drinking for a full month

· Just by being disappointed in him

Otis

· Nine

· He can basically do what he wants, no one is actually paying attention to him

Whitakers:

James

· Basically just keeps the business running from a stock standpoint and lets everyone else handle the rest

· Has literally no clue what he’s doing

The Cannonball Run 1 est un film américano-hongkongais réalisé par Hal Needham, sorti en 1981. L'histoire basique est d'aller le plus vite possible d'un point A à un point B en évitant les policiers embusqués et toutes les embuches imaginables... C'est une gigantesque brochette de Stars et Starlettes qui composent ce film fort distrayant : Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Victor Prinzim, Farrah Fawcett, Pamela Glover, Dean Martin, Jamie Blacke, Sammy Davis Jr., Morris Fenderbaum, Roger Moore, Seymour Goldfarb Jr, Jack Elam, George Furth, Arthur J. Foyt, Adrienne Barbeau, Marcie Thatcher, Tara Buckman, Jamie Farr, Jackie Chan, Bert Convy, Bradford Compton, Michael Hui, Terry Bradshaw, Terry Mel Tillis, Rick Aviles, Alfie Wise, Warren Berlinger, Peter Fonda, Molly Picon, Jimmy 'The Greek' Snyder, Bianca Jagger, Robert Tessier, Johnny Yune, Valerie Perrine, etc... Ce film s'inspire du Cannonball, course clandestine qui se déroula réellement aux États-Unis de 1973 à 1978, puis en Europe à partir des années 1980. Le scénariste Brock Yates, qui en était le créateur, et le réalisateur Hal Needham participèrent à l'édition 1978, avec une ambulance dotée d'un moteur V8 Chrysler de 8 litres de cylindrée développant 500 chevaux et capable de rouler à 240 km/h. C'est cette même ambulance que l'on voit dans le film. Après le tournage, elle fut revendue aux enchères par Brock Yates, qui fit don du produit de la vente à une œuvre de charité. La Ferrari 308 utilisée par Dean Martin et Sammy Davis Jr est celle du réalisateur Hal Needham. Burt Reynolds fut à l'époque cité dans le Livre Guinness des records comme l'acteur le mieux payé de tous les temps pour ce film : il toucha en effet un cachet d'un million de dollars par jour de tournage ! Le rôle de JJ McClure était à l'origine destiné à Steve McQueen et le ton du film était orienté vers l'action pure et dure. Après le décès de McQueen, le rôle échut à Burt Reynolds et le scénario fut remodelé pour évoluer vers une comédie. Le film fut produit et distribué par la Golden Harvest, compagnie dirigée par le fameux producteur hongkongais Raymond Chow. Ce dernier en a d'ailleurs profité pour faire jouer dans ce film deux de ses "poulains", à savoir Jackie Chan et Michael Hui. Le personnage d'Arthur J. Foyt ( A.J. Foyt) écologiste farouche opposant au Cannonball, est un clin d'œil du scénariste Brock Yates : Dans la réalité, le vrai A.J. Foyt est un des plus grands pilote automobile de l'histoire des États-Unis, qui remporta les 24 Heures du Mans 1967 avec Dan Gurney... puis fut le vainqueur du Cannonball 1971. En raison de la présence de Roger Moore, le film est truffé de références à James Bond, néanmoins, c'est le seul film où l'on voit Moore conduire la mythique Aston Martin DB5 de Bond, chose qu'il ne fit jamais lors de la saga. Dans la version française, Roger Moore est doublé non pas par Claude Bertrand, mais par Jean-Claude Michel, alors voix française régulière de Sean Connery et Clint Eastwood. Du reste, la version française fut largement "aménagée" par les distributeurs afin de rendre le film compréhensible aux spectateurs français : ainsi, lorsque Goofy, après que McClure lui demande s'il se prend pour le président, parle en imitant Valéry Giscard d’Estaing (dans la version originale, Goofy imite Richard Nixon) ! Ce film a fait l'objet d'une suite : Cannonball 2... en 1984, on y retrouve en grande partie les acteurs de ce premier volet.

Survivor Verse, Jiaying’s Inhumans

Name: Molly Madson Nickname: Amoeba Girl FC: Madison McLaughlin Nationality: Austrialian Gift: Phagocytosis (Triflic acid) and decentralized internal organs. Bio: Molly is fifteen. Her transformation took her mouth and when her step-father tried to touch her he was forced to chop off his own arm with a butcher knife to stop her eating it. Molly ran off into the outback, forced to eat everything organic she touched. Jiaying found her naked, she ate her own clothing, and afraid of herself. Using her own gift of life force manipulation she was able to hold back Molly’s gift and hug the girl. Molly would follow the woman to hell after that.

Name: Tyson Rogers Nickname: Rogers FC: Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje Nationality: American Gift: Absorbs heat from non-living matter via touch Bio: Tyson Rogers grew up in Detroit. He doesn’t trust authority, for damn good reasons. A former part of BLM. He got his powers and sought out the inhuman resistance he’d heard getting blasted on TV. He figured they had to be the right side if they were getting that bad of coverage. He has no intention of letting the government “tag me like a damn cow”.

Name: Sharice Boucher Nickname: Ne m'oublie pas FC: Kandyse McClure Nationality: French Gift: Memory affecting pheromone release that causes humans foggy mentality and to forget about her once she is gone. Bio: Sharice’s gift at first seemed like a great deal of fun. She could do whatever she wanted and get away with it, however the reality of being unrememberable was soon far too painful. Her father declared her missing as he couldn’t remember her visits. Jiaying’s group found her and when they were unaffected by her gift she followed them unwilling to always be forgotten anymore.

Name: Brandon Eliot Nickname: FC: Jimmy Bennett Nationality: Canadian Gift: Super sense of smell capable of tracking and distinguishing human, inhuman, and even potential inhumans via scent. Prehensile nose. Bio: Brandon was a 17 year old musical theater nerd worried about being disowned for being gay. One bite of fish changed all that as he was suddenly disowned for being inhuman.

Name: Ojal Anand Nickname: FC: Kareena Kapoor Khan Nationality: Indian Gift: Able to open portals to anywhere she can remember or has a picture of. Portal only open as long as she concentrates. Bio: Ojal was born into an inhuman family, she met her husband in afterlife, neither was chosen for terrigenous. Ojal was happy and never wanted to change. When Terrigen was released Ojal’s husband transformed and before they could discover his gift he was taken by the ATCU in the night. (He was later murdered by Lash when he was released by Jemma Simmons) Ojal used every contact she could to find Jiaying and beg her help. She changed to help fight for their people, but is greatful her gift can help without violence.

Name: Ajay Roy* Nickname: Banyan FC: Salman Khan Nationality: Indian Gift: Tree form. Bio: an Indian actor and celebrity movie star who was mixed up with organized crime until his terriginis transformed him into a hulking tree creature. He was living as a tree before Jiaying found him and helped him learn to control his form and leave his roots behind.

Name: Xiaoyi Chen* Nickname: Iso FC: Vicky Chen Nationality: Chinese Gift: Pressure Manipulation. Bio: A 14 year old girl whose parents gave her to Jiaying to protect her from being exploited as a weapon of the state. She is still young and playful given to using her powers to entertain herself. She only speaks Mandarin.

Name: Mark Ma Nickname: FC: Duan Yihong Nationality: Chinese Gift: Water shaping, gills (non-optional) Bio: A fisherman from Beitun China, his terrigenesis made normal life far out of his reach. He is a recent addition to Jiaying’s team being grateful for the warmer waters she travels to.
