WIP Wednesday
Tis WIP Wednesday over at Mi6 café! I still want to celebrate it even though i'm still on my fandom holiday in the lands of Rivers of London. So have a RoL snippet!
This exchange follows a scene where Nightingale paints a little moving picture of light into the air, using a complex spell that Peter tries to figure out.
“What kind of a spell was that just now?”
“What do you think?” Typical Nightingale. Always ready to turn anything into a teaching moment.
“I’m thinking it’s a variation on lux. A really complicated one though, and impello was definitely part of it too, but… not in the way I’ve ever seen it used.”
“How so?”
“Well, it was... slower? More delicate. It almost didn’t feel like impello, but I think it was.”
Nightingale nodded. “Very good, Peter. Your powers of observation have much improved of late.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“And to answer your question, it’s… more of a parlour trick than anything else. Nothing you’ll find written in a book.”
“Did you come up with it?”
“Heavens, no. This spell routinely made the rounds at dinner parties. We made a game of who could come up with the best idea for a picture.” and after a small pause, he smiled. “They tended to become more and more lewd as the night went on. Hugh Oswald was the worst offender.”
“I can imagine,” I said, having seen the mischievous side the old man had.
“It became somewhat of an obsession of mine for a while," Nightingale carried on, "I wanted to see how close to the real thing you could get, simply by using lux. I mostly sculpted plants and then it seemed natural to add one or the other animal. After I’d figured that out, I wondered if you could make the pictures move.”
“So you did come up with that spell.”
“I merely modified it. And only after I’d mastered all the formae in the spell,” he said, ever-vigilant to not motivate me to experiment any more than I already did. Unsuccessfully, I might add. “It used to entertain the boys to no end, especially back in the war, during the exceptionally dull times when we were at camp, waiting for orders. I’d routinely be summoned to the medical tents to entertain the wounded. We never found much in the way of practical uses for it though, so it remained just that; A parlour trick.”
“I don’t know,” I said, “It’s like… art made from magic. It’s beautiful and it makes people smile. That’s a pretty good practical use, don’t you think?.”
He gave me a strange look then, confusion and then something else I couldn’t tell, but it made his eyes soft. “You know, I… never thought about it like that. Art made from magic…”

WIP tag game
Thank you to @ato-the-bean, @eleanor-is-fine, and @thestalwartheart for the tags
RULES: Post the last sentence you wrote (fanfic / original / anything) and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence.
I was writing out wedding vows and a hand fasting ceremony for a fanfic this weekend so here's a bit from that. (and oh boy is it a long one.)
Even as the cord is strong, let your spoken vows be stronger, and your actions stronger still as you daily reforge your connection to each other.
26 words, 26 tags. Here we go. I don't even know if you all write.

MI6 Cafe Creators Tag Game
(Thanks for the tag, @emiliasilverova, this is my very untimely response lol)
We’d love for people to keep getting to know each other after this year’s 007 Fest, so we’re starting this tag game!
Rules: Answer the questions, then tag 3 new people to complete this. Also, tag the person who tagged you and @mi6-cafe so we can reblog your response.
Note that when we say ‘fanwork’ in the questions below, that could mean a fanfic, gif, fanart, headcanon, cosplay, crocheted work---any kind of fancreation counts!
1. What work of yours challenged you when you were creating it?
Everything I create, especially writing, challenges me in some way.
My part of Juggling Act, the 007 Fest Round Robin, was one of the most challenging pieces of writing I've ever had to write. I'm a slow writer, so having only 24 hours to come up with a coherent follow-up to what came before me was difficult, but very rewarding.
2. What is a fanwork you’ve seen which gave you a new headcanon about a character?
@jellymish-art's whole body of work, but especially pieces like this one, 100% sold me on the trans!Bond headcanon. I feel like trans!Q is a lot more common so I'm sharing some love for 007.
3. Is there a fanwork that you really want to make, but you haven’t started yet?
Many, but for the two that I think will eventually happen:
a 00Leiter fic during Quantum of Solace, based on their exchange at the bar
a collection of 00Leiter vignettes through the different incarnations of Leiter and 007, told from Leiter's POV
4. What fanwork of yours surprised you, and how?
No Longer My Concern, an alternate universe fic where M is a medium, set during Skyfall. I'd never remixed somebody else's fic before, but deadicateddeath's AU was so intriguing it almost wrote itself.
5. What themes/styles/subjects are common across many of your fanworks?
Angst, loss, and bittersweet tenderness. My partner described my style as "consistently smart and understated" and I strive for every piece to be worthy of that compliment.
6. What other fandoms do you create for, if any?
None at the moment. Other than Bond, I mainly write original fiction.
7. Is there an artist that you like to listen to while you create? Or one whose work always inspires you?
I'm not married to a specific artist, or collection of artists, but I often find myself coming back to Rammstein. Lots of angsty pieces were drawn or written listening to them.
8. Share a fanwork that you’ve found yourself thinking about weeks after reading/seeing it.
This edit of CR, QoS and Skyfall set to Somebody to Die For by Hurts. I've watched it dozens of times and it never fails to make me cry. Beautiful edit set to a beautiful song.
9. Finally, share where you post your works!

Tagging: no one because at this point everyone should have done it already 🤭

I AM SO HAPPY that I'm finally writing fic again! I haven't written really anything in about a year or so. And I'm also excited to be back in the RoL-fandom again.
This story is about retired!Nightingale out in Germany, trying his best not - and failing - to cause the KDA sleepless nights. We're not there yet but we're definitely on our way to Nightingale shenanigans.
These people were so kind to share their amazing ideas with us so that fic writers like me could rehash them in their stories. I hope you like it!

Chapter 2 is up!
"I knew Nightingale paid attention to his looks, but I hadn’t pegged him as superficial enough that a wrong choice of outfit would bother him to the point he actually showed it. With hindsight, I should have picked up on that."
In which Nightingale has a disagreement with his suit and Peter is supremely confused.

G'day! I sometimes write things and have been a tad more nervous about sharing my Discworld fanfics than sharing my fanart. But that just means I need to get over myself, so for anyone interested, here's a link:
Would love to hear your thoughts if you decide to read! :D

New fanfic! It's a short one, so this post contains the full text. But if you'd like to leave a comment or kudos on my Ao3, just follow the link above! I'd love to hear from you!
Errare Humanum Est
Me and Nightingale both looked down at the sad remains of his experiment.
“Would you look at that,” Nightingale said, “I failed.”
He took a few steps forward and carefully prodded at the smouldering pile of melted metal and plastic with his boot. I was about to say some encouraging words to cheer him up, but when Nightingale turned back to me, I was surprised to find that, instead of looking disappointed, he was grinning from ear to ear.
“Is something the matter?” he asked me when I didn’t respond.
“Sorry,” I said, “I didn’t expect you to be this enthusiastic about messing up.”
“Ah. I suppose it isn’t the usual reaction.” Nightingale’s grin returned at that. “You see, I’ve recently decided to let go of the notion that I must always set a good example. It may not be what is expected of me, but then again, I’m nobody’s automaton, am I?”
His eyes met mine and there was a sense of pride in Nightingale’s expression that I’d never seen there before. And was there a hint of rebellion too?
That made me think. I don’t pretend to know what it was like for him, but I’d always had a feeling that Nightingale resented his title as The Nightingale, because if you’re being put on a pedestal by your friends and by your enemies alike, that has to feel somewhat alienating. And you know, with him still being (as of writing this) the last formally trained British wizard and having to look after the Folly and the black library and basically having been a one-man-army for falcon related police matters for ages… That much pressure is bound to have an impact on your self-image, especially if you’re someone as conscientious as Nightingale.
And maybe that was why this moment felt so huge all of a sudden. Maybe this was Nigthingale’s personal little rebellion; A rebellion to take back his humanity.
To test my theory, I mirrored his grin and said: “Errare humanum est, perseverare autem diabolicum.”
“Et tertia non datur,” he finished. “You’ve read up on Seneca the Younger, I see.”
I wasn’t about to tell him that I’d recently looked it up on the internet for a totally unrelated reason and instead asked: “Was he right?”
“For the first part, yes. As for the second and third… I claim my right as a hairless ape with ideas of grandeur to not have an answer.”
I nodded solemnly. “Nice one.”
“Thank you,” said Nightingale and started rolling up his sleeves. “Now, let’s see if we can’t get my little experiment to work on round two.”
Long story short, we didn’t. Although we did get a proper safety protocol out of it, on how to deal with noxious fumes and magical pollution.

007 Fest 2022 Intro Post: Jellymish
Tumblr/AO3/slack: Jellymish-art (tumblr) and Jellymish (rest)
Civilian role(nickname): Jellymish, Gondolier who was just trying to do his job
Tumblr media
What you were doing before being rudely interrupted by an international crisis: I was just there, minding my own business, ferrying around my clients when suddenly there came a speedboat rushing around a corner and CRASH!! There goes my beloved gondola, broken in two! It's tragic, I say! I could have cried if I weren't busy trying not to swallow the canal water.
Favorite snack/drink to have while watching the events unfold: I'll go with salted pretzel sticks, a small bowl of olives and a good mastiha to start off with.
What you’re most looking forward to during Fest: Watching the creative chaos unfold and creating Fest things without the pressure of competition. I'll go with the flow. Maybe there'll be art. Maybe there'll be music. Maybe writing. I don't know yet. But it'll be fun.
Cheers, Jellymish, G. w. w. j. t. t. d. h. j.
