Tumblr media
- Survival Street. 4 issues. James Asmus, Jim Festante, et al.
In the very near future, assorted companies have gained more and more ground and 'rights' --now they control all politics. Every state belongs to a particular corporation. Entertainment is pure open propaganda. Edutainment for children is dead --but not their actors! There are still children to save --literally and figuratively. There are so many bad guys to not just bring down but whose public image needs to be carefully dismantled. And there are a few sellouts to deal with, too...
Tumblr media
What could have easily become yet another example of those embarassingly puerile takes on famous children's media (Blood and Honey; The twisted world of Oz; Velma; The Banana Splits movie; etc etc) instead is revealed to be a surprisingly smart comic --and yes, smart is the word. The over-the-top covers parodying famous Sesame St. characters do not remotely do justice to the world within --a world in which immigrant children are forced to fight out-of-control wildfires in California; where the governor of Texas wants to implement a law that will allow toddlers to carry weapons; where out-of-control celebrities and internet personalities have fully bought into their self-made hype.
Tumblr media
The comic is not without a couple misses here and there -- the analogy about colonization somewhat falls flat on its face due to the insistence of making it the island where puppets apparently come from. The climax can seem just a touch too convenient...
...but all in all the moments of hope amidst the despair of so-real-it's-hardly-satire feel earned. On the whole a comic more than worth checking out.

What’s Out This Week? 8/3
Thanks to everyone that visited the shop over Otakon weekend!
Tumblr media
Elle(s) #1 -  Kid Toussaint & Aveline Stokart
Elle is just another teenage girl...most of the time. Bubbly and good-natured, she wastes no time making friends on her first day at her new school. But Elle has a secret: she hasn't come alone. She's brought with her a colorful mix of personalities, which come out when she least expects it...
Who is Elle, really? And will her new friends stand by her when they find out the truth?
Tumblr media
Golden Rage #1 (of 5) -  Chrissy Williams & Lauren Knight In a world where older women who've been deemed useless to society are abandoned on an island, GOLDEN RAGE documents their golden years of making friends, baking dessert, and fighting to the death.
Tumblr media
Survival Street #1 (of 4) - James Asmus, Jim Festante & Abylay Kussainov
After an unbridled wave of corporations take over America, the country is left completely deregulated and effectively carved up into feudal states where billionaires and businesses make their own laws. Among the wreckage, mass privatization shuts down public broadcasting, forcing all the beloved "edutainers" out on the down and dirty streets. One group of them stick together, determined to keep helping kids across the country and do it by becoming an A-Team-esque band of mercenaries fighting for (and educating!) kids in the crumbling, corporate war zone of New Best America.
Tumblr media
The Dead Lucky #1 -  Melissa Flores & French Carlomagno San Francisco is changing. Tech consortium Morrow is building the city of the future with "peacekeeper" robots looming on every corner-and wherever Morrow isn't, the Salvation gang is. Bibiana Lopez-Yang is changing too. She came back from Afghanistan with PTSD and the ability to control electrical currents. If she can hold it together, she might be the hero San Francisco needs. But against an enemy this big, it isn't enough to be good. She'll have to be lucky.
Tumblr media
One Piece GN Vol 100 - Eiichiro Oda
LET’S GOOOOOOOOO
Tumblr media
Hawk The Slayer #1 (of 5) - Garth Ennis, Henry Flint & Greg Staples
A few years have passed since Hawk and his trusty band of warriors defeated the evil wizard Voltan, but Hawk is still uneasy, fearing that the Dark wizards have only temporarily disappeared and are due to return. Once again, Hawk must assemble a team of warriors to confront the returning evil. The Mind Sword may be the key to saving the world, but is it also responsible for the resurgence of these ungodly forces?

Field Tripping #1
Tumblr media
Field Tripping #1 ComiXology Originals 2019 Created & Written by James Asmus & Jim Festante Created & llustrated by José García Lettered by Ryan Ferrier     What better way to learn about the seasons than travelling to a world that cycles through all of them in ONE DAY? And what better way to learn about the cycle of life than to get attacked by man-eating plants? Actually, there are MUCH better ways. But Mrs. Flubbins' class are about to learn that the HARD way.     Okay I really have been enjoying these books from ComiXology. This is a really fun story that kind of takes that Magic Bus and adds some Dr. Who to it and maybe a tad bit of Goosebumps just for good measure. Whatever the magic formulae here is it works and it works extremely well. This is imaginative, creative and so very much not whatever it is you're expecting it to be. I really wish this were a physical copy because that's just me plus it would be easier to pass around so I could get the household reading it as well.     I like the way that this book is being told. The story & plot development alongside the character development as they work in perfect harmony with each other is picked up by the pacing to create this stellar ebb & flow is fantastic. From the opening here I really hadn't known what to expect and the fact that we meet Diedre as she's got what look like colourforms on her bedroom window just makes my day. Though to be honest it is kind of hard to figure out what grade they are in here but that's okay.     There are moments though you really have to pay attention to what's being said here. Because I have should have known something was up when one student asked a question and said something about his dad. So yeah you need to really this as well if you wanna catch the clues. Now I have idea who Mrs. Flubbins is but she's an eccentric character to say the least and feels a lot more like a Hufflepuff than a Mrs. Rogers so it almost feels like what she's doing is something that she knows she shouldn't be doing but thinks that she's able to handle whatever may come. Is that the way they say it goes, but let's forget all that, no really famous last words, thoughts or actions anyone?     Ya know I found myself really enjoying the interiors here. There is some superb attention to detail that we see thanks to the varying weights of the linework and how they are being utilised. Also there are some fabulous special effects that we see here as well and it makes this much more fun. The creativity and imagination that we see throughout is phenomenal and how it all comes to life with these colours with the hues and tones within each one that we see is just gorgeous. I like how the kids have different body types and ethnicity's. There are times it feels like this animated feature film with a very dark and twisted Willy Wonka feel if they were in Jumanji. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a spectacular eye for storytelling. The backgrounds are vital to the story and they enhance the moments and provide a really nice size and scope to the book.     While the road tripping part of this was a hoot I really hadn't expected this to end the way it did either. So now I have to wonder what is it that we're going to see next? Will we fill in the blanks of the past or just keep moving forward from where this issue ends? I kind of want to see it all play out but then again I can totally understand the last page here, which is a great cliffhanger by the way. Oh by the by seeing that made me start singing Bon Jovi so yeah thanks for that lol.      If you have been undecided about reading books digitally and wanted to dip your toes in, start at ComiXology and try this one or any of their other original titles. I promise it's a great introduction to the digital world.
