“Sehnsüchte, Prozessstufe II” by Linda Weiß Part of the exhibition “etwa faustgroß” Villa Merkel, November 11–27, 2022
Weiß’s work asks if it is possible to think productively, to create with sugar cycles of ecological systems that are yet still dependent on the massive global sugar industry and all of its attendant historical baggage. The show is in part about the aesthetic, ecological, social, and political possibilities of largely DIY processes like fermentation, for example. Here used as one that converts sugar into cellular energy, it operates as both metaphor and material biological process, in what Lauren Fournier describes in Fermenting Feminism as a “symbiosis between species and coevolution, accessibility and bioavailability, conservation and transformation, future and survival… and finally to the reduction of damage and care.” According to Fournier, fermentation can be understood as a feminist or queer practice; fermenting methods in life and in art draw attention to ecological relations as well as ways of caring for other kin, to the vast variation of the temporalities of life, and to humanity’s bacterial ancestors.
Weiß’s work stages a digestive aesthetics that pushes us to think about the possibly queer politics of digestion (as Ramzi Fawaz explores elsewhere) through the specific ways in which sugar moves and transforms in different systems and for different functions. Drawing on contemporary theoretical works on feminist theory, plants and weird fungal life, and speculative fictions, Weiß’s focus on certain biological conversions of sugar not only points toward possible clean energy alternatives (we’re not there yet, the work acknowledges this with its dependence on a small lithium battery for power) but also requires that visitors acknowledge their own co-dependencies and how those substances are produced and circulated.
Sehnsüchte: in English, longings, but it’s a word known for its impossibility to translate exactly. With etymological origins in the words for yearning (das Sehnen) and addiction (die Sucht) the title of Weiß’s show asks us to dwell in the sticky space between both. Sugar seduces, yes, but is nonhuman nourishment here as well, a substance that crosses the species divide or blurs it, a link between complex biological organisms in symbiotic relation. Text by Alison Sperling Alison Sperling is an IPODI Postdoctoral Fellow at the Technische Universität Berlin where she works on queer and feminist theory, science fiction, and the Anthropocene.

BMW M1 Turbo (the extraordinary case of the BMW M1 with 1000 hp)
Ignore the livery. Or don’t ignore it. Like with every other Jägermeister racing car, it might be hard to actually walk past this orange beast without giving the standout paint job at least one glance. It was designed to attract attention, just how Günter Mast — the man that gave his OK to race cars with the famous stag on the bonnet — intended. The truth of the matter is, however, that this particular car’s convoluted history is as complicated as the story of the BMW M1 itself. Therefore this car is not what it seems to be, as the orange Jägermeister livery stems from the imagination of the man that rebuilt the car, the legendary M1 whisperer Fritz Wagner. And if you ask anyone at Jägermeister headquarters about the car, they will potentially reply with a polite letter from their legal department. To paraphrase Samuel Beckett: there’s nothing funnier than tragedy. And so, the story of the BMW M1 could be perceived as one of the automotive world’s funniest. The car was originally designed with the ambition to create the greatest, mid-engined racing car of all time. One that would beat Porsche’s dominating 935 in the all-important Group 5. A masterpiece made of speed and German reliability which, in reality, became a car that had to be reverse engineered to be sold for the road. All because of changes in racing rules and homologation, which stipulated how many cars had to be produced before a particular model was allowed to hit the track. The production number of 400 cars — which seems so minuscule by today’s standards — turned out to be the first problem on a long list of unfolding disasters.
In essence, the life of this beautiful, light, well-made machine that had been designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who reworked Paul Bracq’s original prototype, was plagued by bad luck and bad decisions. The fact that Lamborghini — who were supposed to produce it at their factory — went bust because of copyright fraud and embezzlement of funds didn’t help. However, it was the rushed solution to disperse production all over Europe that was the final nail in the coffin. Marchese built the car's tube frame, TIR molded the fiberglass, Italdesign mated the two and installed the interior, then the M1 was shipped from Italy to Stuttgart, where Baur would install the BMW hardware, after which in Munich BMW Motorsports would do the final touches and quality control. It made the M1 almost a quarter more expensive than any equivalent Ferrari or Lambo sold at the time. Case closed.
British generals in the second world war would often joke that Germans were not very good when it came to Plan B. This might be true. In the end, even if BMW’s head of Motorsport Jochen Neerpasch, the brilliant man that he is, thought of a way to market the M1 with the Procar series, in which F1 drivers like Niki Lauda, Clay Regazzoni, and Nelson Piquet would race the cars against privateers, as a prelude to the weekend's Formula 1 race, too few examples were made for the car to ever officially leave Group 4 as was originally intended. Later on, those teams who managed to finally race in Group 5, years after BMW abandoned the programme in order to enter to F1, found the M1 simply uncompetitive. Even the twin-turbocharged models built by Schnitzer, which developed 800 hp and more from their straight six engines, were plagued by problems. his finally brings us to this particular, rather unusual example. It was allegedly built for the famous Walter Brun racing team, who later on won the Group C World Championship with a Jägermeister-liveried Porsche 956. Brun’s friendship with Paul Rosche, the man who turbocharged the BMW 2002, gave rise to the idea of installing the M88 turbo engine originally planned for the March Group-5 car into a modified M1 Procar chassis wrapped into Group 5 bodywork. However, the car was never raced. Why? Even at BMW no one knows. Particularly good news considering that back in the day, when this 1090 kg machine was put on a dyno, it put out 1000 hp and 930 NM of Torque. A reading obtained just before the machine broke while the car apparently still wanted to keep going. Now in the hands of a new owner who intends to race it regularly, it will have plenty of opportunity to shine. And so a new chapter unfolds…

Schaeffler Group inaugurates software technology center in India
Tumblr media
Schaeffler is expanding its software and electronics expertise. Today, the company inaugurated a new center of competence in software development in Pune, India. Electronics and software for the company's automotive components and systems especially for e-mobility and chassis applications will be developed here in the future as a strategically important part of a powerful international R&D network. Schaeffler will be investing 10 million euros in its new location. The newly formed entity Schaeffler Technology Solutions India Private Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Schaeffler Group and will be employing 200 engineers in India by end of 2022 and will be part of Schaeffler's E-Mobility business division. Schaeffler plans to ramp up the development team in India during the next years, making the country a main location and competence center for software and electronics development for Schaeffler. Uwe Wagner, Chief Technology Officer at Schaeffler AG, said, "Strengthening competencies in mechatronics, electronics, and software plays a decisive role in Schaeffler's company strategy Roadmap 2025. In this way, we will actively shape the transformation toward sustainable and electrified mobility. As part of the Schaeffler global R&D network, the newly established entity Schaeffler Technology Solutions India Private Limited in Pune will here play a key role. Together, we are very well equipped to continue our successful journey to pioneer motion." "Electrified powertrains have been part of Schaeffler's core business since 2018 and we have become a leading systems supplier in electromobility in recent years. To further strengthen and expand this position, we will rely on a global R&D network for software and electronics development in the future. Our newly formed entity Schaeffler Technology Solutions India Private Limited in Pune will become a main location in this network," said Dr. Jochen Schröder, head of the E-Mobility business division of Schaeffler. Focus on software for e-mobility projects Schaeffler already offers a very broad range of solutions for electric drives and is aiming for major growth in this area. The company develops everything from individual electromobility components to highly complex systems such as a 4in1 electric that integrates electric motor, power electronics, transmission, and thermal management into one comprehensive system. This strategy of developing both individual components and complete systems for electric powertrains is paying off for Schaeffler – both technically and commercially. During the first nine months in 2022, the e-mobility business at Schaeffler totaled an order intake of 4.7 billion euros relating to the E-Mobility business division. The engineers at the new technology center in Pune will be contributing to this business in the areas of software development, electronics, mechatronics, and validation which are key to seamlessly blend electrical and mechanical components for overall system reliability and efficiency. Yogesh Patwardhan, Director, Schaeffler Technology Solutions India Private Limited, said, "In the last few years, we have witnessed fast paced change in technology scape driven by consumer preferences. Schaeffler group is committed to enable the transition towards sustainable mobility by harmonizing our manufacturing competency with digitalization, electric and electronics competencies. As a result, we leverage local strengths that the world has to offer and India has long established itself with its vast engineering talent availability. Schaeffler has a strong base in India already and this center was a natural extension of our commitment to expand our local footprint." Attractive work environment for engineers As a leading global supplier to the automotive and industrial sectors, Schaeffler is an attractive employer, especially in the areas of mechatronics, electronics, and software. Therefore, the company plans to leverage in India's rich engineering talent pool in the software and electronics fields. At Schaeffler, employees can contribute to shape the future of mobility, and topics like digitalization and sustainability are at the heart of Schaeffler's strategy. Furthermore, Schaeffler offers various career paths for individual development as well as qualification measures. Since an optimal working environment is crucial, Schaeffler has been creating new offices with a state-of-the-art software and electronics laboratory for current and future employees in Pune, totaling a size of nearly 5,000 square meters. These offer professionals' modern workplaces with communication zones, meeting places for spontaneous discussions, and special areas where they can work in a concentrated and focused manner. Schaeffler develops and manufactures a diverse mix of efficient and sustainable drive solutions for a wide range of applications – everything from bicycles to 40-ton trucks. The activities in this area include semi- and fully electrified powertrains, fuel cell systems, and the development of efficient internal combustion engines. Schaeffler is shaping the mobility transition not just with CO2-efficient powertrains but also with new chassis applications, including technologies that enable highly automated driving. The new development center in India will contribute in multiple projects focusing on a range of complex functional safety topics from quality management to ASIL D applications and cybersecurity, leveraging AUTOSAR platform and architecture. Lore (2012) - Review
Lore is a 14 year old girl who is left to take care of her younger sister and 3 younger brothers, one of which is still a breast feeding baby, after their parents had to leave them behind for reasons connected to the end of the WW2 and their father’s involvement, as he was a N*zi soldier. They are set to travel to meet Omi, whom I assume is their grandmother, but the trip isn’t as easy her mother described before she left, especially once they come in contact with a Jewish Refugee named Thomas who becomes their new traveling companion, to put it simply.
There’s a lot of calling people by their first names so I was often confused as to who was actually who in relation to one another throughout the entire film.
I should know by now that movies set around WW2 give me hella anxiety, but for whatever reason I still somehow manage to find one that piques my interest, even if it’s only slightly. I picked this one up from the library I want to say last month, but let it sit forever cause I always pick these types of movies on a whim and then have to wait to watch them until I’m emotionally ready or at least in a neutral enough mood to be able to handle them. Long story short it did in fact give me anxiety and I’m glad my computer needed to be charged so I could force myself to take a break before finishing it.
Has this story been told before? Many times. But I think this is the first one of it’s kind that takes place in the wake of it all, that I’ve personally seen. Most often they’re being told at the height of the war or sometime before it’s over and I thought that specific “twist” was a decent way to set this film apart. Now I don’t know all of the historical context, however some of the things that took place felt like they existed for shock value, unless American soldiers did in fact make people look at dead bodies for food, in which case I am actually speechless. There was a lot of things that took place like that, where I wondered if there was liberties taken in those areas or if that was actually how things went. Although it was intense, a little bloody, a bit uncomfortable and had moments where I had to turn my head, it wasn’t as visually traumatizing as I thought it might be. Overall it has a dark simplicity that didn’t make the movie feel slow at all, like others in the category, but rather nicely paced. I was frustrated with the ending, but also kinda got it, but also needed more. I’m just so back and forth on my feelings with this one.
Side Note: I wouldn’t be surprised if many of those scenarios were based in reality. (You can tell I’m not well versed in the historical part of historical fiction.)
Honestly I don’t have an overall rating for this movie and I think that comes down to me not quite knowing if I support the characters in their story/journey or if I just thought it was a well put together movie?
.
.
.
If you’ve seen the movie and want to discuss Thomas, my DM’s are open cause I got thoughts!

The House    [trailer]
When a repressive government bans journalist Johann from plying his trade, he retreats with his wife to their high-tech vacation home. Soon, however, the smart home's artificial intelligence develops a life of its own.
Two interesting plot strands, the political situation, and the hi-tech house. But unfortunately I wasn't able to see any connection between the two. And the political backstory felt rather fragmentary.
That leaves the house as an interesting location that makes for some nice visuals, and the actors who try to make the best out of the not entirely plausible story.
