wow, long time so see!! so it was my 1 year anniversary with this tumblr page over a month ago 💀 and i wanted to do something kinda special for it! unfortunately, school has been super hectic and tough on me so i had to postpone this project, but now i am finally able to show y’all! it’s not much, but i just wanted to make a video of some silly soss moments (from s1-2) and hopefully you all enjoy ☺️

i also want to thank everyone who’s been supporting my account this past year, whether it’s liking the gifs, reblogging them, or just silently lurking! i made this account because i was so excited for season 3 to come out and i wanted to provide more content for everyone to enjoy, and hopefully i did that :D

Pet Parents Launch Dog Poop App to Track Digestive Heath

As a pet parent, you’re probably more familiar with your pup’s poop than you ever thought you’d be. You generally know what shape, size, color, and consistency are normal for your cuddly canine. But when the doo-doo you’re used to suddenly changes, it can be disconcerting. Luckily for you, there’s no need to rush to the vet when the dog poop littering your backyard starts to look anything but uniform. That’s because an app can help you discern what’s going on with your dog’s gut health. All you need is your smartphone.

Every Poop Tells a Story

The app is called Snappoo, and it was designed by Josh and Emily Braaten, a couple of dog parents from St. Paul, Minnesota. The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to figure out if there’s anything amiss with your dog’s poop. All you have to do is submit a pic of your dog’s poop. The app critiques the color and consistency, matching it to various canine health issues through AI and data science. Because the Braatens taught the app to categorize a slew of dog feces, it can tell the difference between dry, brown poop and mushy, yellow poop. And everything in-between.

“They say your gut is like your second brain so you can learn a lot about it,” Josh told the Star Tribune.

Of course the couple volunteered their 7-year-old Glendale Terrier, Gertrude, to help develop the app, along with veterinarian Eric Ruhland, who owns St. Paul Pet Hospital. He told the Star Tribune that the app “may avoid a phone call to a vet’s clinic that isn’t necessary — ease anxieties with people that what they’re seeing is normal.”

The Future of Dog Poop

The app, which launched in August, is still in its infancy. But future plans for it include the ability to tell pet parents if their dog is getting a variety of nutrients in their diet. And the more pet parents who use the app, the more accurate it will become.

“Our users have the ability to correct the analysis, if the app doesn’t get the consistency or color right,” Josh told the Star Tribune. “It will get smarter and smarter to where it makes very few errors.”

On the ghost hunt for Uncle Giggles: Halifax brewery raises a glass to paranormal patron

Nestled in Halifax’s north end is a popular craft brewery where friends and strangers gather for a pint or two.

“We have first dates here, we have last dates here,” laughs Brent Braaten, creative director at Good Robot Brewing. “But a big part about Good Robot is just a place to gather.”

But according to some of the employees, at least one spirit is also on the menu.

At the end of each night, when patrons go home and the doors close, there’s one bar fly who never seems to leave.

“Some of us heard sounds, or there have been flickering lights, or sometimes you see something from the corner of your eye,” says Braaten. “But the only real physical evidence that Uncle Giggles exists is that every night he leaves us a dime or two, just to say hi.”

Staff named the presence ‘Uncle Giggles’ because they reported hearing strange laughter late at night.

They often find the mysterious dimes, believed to be a message from beyond, in a corner of the brewery’s upstairs bar.

The upstairs space was originally an apartment where the brewery’s co-founders first lived when they bought the building six years ago.

“I never saw anything bizarre, or heard anything funny until opening night of this bar, which is our former residence, and that darn painting showed up,” says Josh Counsil, one of Good Robot’s co-founders.

“I think that painting might be haunted as well. It was an old painting of a banker that I found on the side of the road on Agricola Street,” explains Braaten.

Braaten decided it would be a nice touch to paint Good Robot’s mascot on the old portrait.

From the moment it was placed in this room, dimes started to appear.

“The staff would find a dime, they’d be like ‘Oh, someone lost some change,” says Braaten. “But we’re kind of living in a changeless society, and the more dimes that show up, the more I’m thinking, no one has this many dimes.”

After a couple years of observing this mysterious occurrence, Good Robot decided to create a special brew to honour their paranormal patron.

“Allegedly, Uncle Giggles is a pretty cheap tipper, but all-in-all, nobody really complains about his presence,” says Counsil.

So the next time you find yourself visiting Good Robot, raise a glass to Uncle Giggles, and you might even find a dime or two.

Measuring Design Effectiveness

Connecting/Synthesizing/Transforming

This month was all about determining if and how a design is communicating to the target audience, and how effective the overall messaging is. First we must determine the brands values that the target audience is receiving from the brand. According to Ken and Jenn O'Grady, a brand's value is separated into two categories. These categories are hard values and soft values. Hard Values are concrete and tangible things that can be easily measured. Examples of hard values include: increase in sales, expand participation, enhance user ability, saves time, drives online traffic, and cuts waste and saves material. A design that encourages the audience to click a link on a website or visit a brand store is a hard value. Soft Values are intangible, subjective, and are harder to measure, according to Ken and Jenn O'Grady. Soft values are values that evoke emotion, creates connections, and fosters trust between a brand and the target audience. Examples of soft values include: creating loyalty, delight and inspire, empower action, and build understanding. Most brands will have a combination of both hard and soft values in their communication. Measuring the effectiveness of the brand can be accomplished by conducting surveys and questionnaires.

From a designer's perspective, it is important to know that the design is communicating the brand's voice and tone to the target audience. Writing questions to ask the target audience can help get vital information on what is working with the design, along with areas of the design that needs additional work. Surveys can also help determine if the brand is different enough from its competitors. In an article by Josh Braaten, he states that "89 percent of companies are using customer experience as a way to differentiate and compete" (Braaten, 2019).

Once the data from the surveys and or questionnaires are collected, we can then determine the effective of the overall communication from brand. We can take this information and make it easier for the audience who will see this data to understand the data that was collected. Data Visualization, Information Design, and Editorial Infographics all are infographics for their own purposes. All three can be great at communicating with the intended audiences by telling stories. According to Josh Ritchie, Data Visualization Infographics are a visual representation of data. Information Design Infographics are is graphic design that focuses on the display of information. Editorial Infographics are used in editorial publications to catch the eye of the reader and maintain their attention by using compelling graphics to tell a visual story.

Problem Solving

The biggest problem that had to be solved this month was conducting the survey. The lack of survey participants was due to the lack of social media from the designer. There was also a lack of media assets that would of help solidify the brands overall communication to the target audience. These problems did not get solved during this course. If this was an actual client then the solution to the problem would be to utilize the brands social media to reach out to the audience and get more participants for the survey. Along with that, show designs of the exterior and interior of the restaurants space to show the audience taking the survey a better visual representation of the overall voice and tone of the brand.

Innovative Thinking

The work conducted this month was inline with others in the industry. Not a whole lot of innovative thinking was conducted this month. The biggest design challenge this month was determining the design of the infographic. Designing the infographics so that they match the brands messaging was the only challenge this month.

Acquiring Competencies

Competencies acquired this month was discovering hard and soft values and how these are important with understanding how these values are being communicated to the target audience. (Conceptual, Occupational)
