#just what i like and dislike and if i recommend it or not
Note
How is no one talking about how the brar valley senate is only in slight dislike tier? I thought the fandom had unanimously agreed they were even worse than Riddle’s mom when that chapter 7 update came out. Surprised to see Riddle’s mom isn’t lower either, most people don’t like her for what she did to poor Riddle.
[My TWST character tier list can be found here!]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, yes 😂 The TWST fandom’s top two enemies, the Briar Valley Senators and Mrs. Rosehearts... I find it kind of funny that on one hand we have some pretty politically powerful people to hate on but on the other hand we have someone who is comparatively very average and just your typical displeased angry mom that we also hate on… though in the end I guess both parties have harmed characters we care about, so they have that in common 💦
While I do think what the senators did to Lilia was (to put it as simply as possible) a dick move, I only slightly dislike them because this kind of political intrigue and social sabotage is what I looove to read. You can always count on old, conservative fictional politicians to stand in opposition to the change that the plucky young protagonists champion or represent. Terrible and alienating as the senators are, it sure does make for some tasty drama and informs a lot about why some of the Diasomnia boys turned out the way they did. I appreciate that worldbuilding, even if it does come at the cost of the senators not really shown to have a personality beyond being mad/intolerant of Lilia and sheltering Malleus.
I also slightly dislike Mrs. Rosehearts for similar reasons as the senators; yes, how she treated Riddle was rife with issues. However, I do believe she actually has a personality beyond being cartoonishly evil and genuinely cares for her son (but just uses very questionable methods). I think it's really interesting to consider their relationship--since Riddle appears to still love her--and the no doubt messy aftermath of it following their "talk" in book 4 (which we never got more details on). I talk at length about Riddle and how he may view his mother in spite of his trauma here; I'd recommend giving it a read!)
In my eyes... I can still enjoy a character even if they do or say deplorable things, so long as their words/actions provide something new or interesting to the lore or to other characters' backgrounds.

Now that more of Book 7 in test has been released...... Baul Zigvolt thoughts??
He's so much like Sebek, but also also!!! Older Croc!! Dilf! Croc!!!
He's just so.... 🐊👀
😍 His looks, his voice, his mannerisms—agh, his voice!!! I love the few scenes where he laughs, it's so prideful and so fitting...... 💚💚💚 Mera, what do you think of him??
He's one of my favorite dilfs (gilfs) out of every twst ojiisan!!!!! :D oh, I love Baul so much. It's so fun to see the parallels and similarities between him and Sebek with their personalities! <3 both wanis are so beloved to me!!! Sebek is slowly growing on me!! >w<
Aaaaa I wish I had more coherent thoughts. I haven't been able to play the new chapters yet even though I desperately want to. orz hopefully I can play it soon so that I can better grasp Baul's personality and mannerisms!!!
Although I do like the idea that Baul and Lilia play video games together in their retirement. Lilia showing Baul all of the anime games his online friend (Idia) recommended to him. Like those war games with the anime girls in scantily clad outfits. I think Baul would genuinely assess whether or not the character makes for a good unit in combat instead of paying attention to the other things. T_T but then he also gets so hung up on the outfits themselves: "This is not proper attire for combat. There are so many weak points exposed. You should always protect every inch of yourself (tangent continues)..." I feel like both Lilia and Baul would be intrigued by the way media (like anime) handles and presents war plots. :O
OMG OR!!!!! The way he would judge you so much if you're Sebek's (human) lover....... >_< there's potential for angst,,, if I recall, Sebek carries a lot of dislike for the fact that he wasn't born with more fae features and I think Baul judges him for that??? Admittedly, my Sebek family lore is limited to the fact that his father is human and a dentist and his mother is fae....... I need to revisit Sebek lore because there's more to his character than just his admiration and devotion for Malleus. orz
There are also thoughts of war era Baul falling for his favorite sex worker at the brothel........... hmmm,,,,,, many thoughts indeed. <3 it's yummy if you're a human because then there's a not-so-veiled level of hatred from Baul, but you're too good at what you do for him to stop visiting and buying your services. War is cruel and cold, but your body is soft and warm. orz orz how can he resist?

I was asked by several people to elaborate on why I thought people hated Essek and specifically treated him as some spontaneous disruption rather than a choice driven by cast members, and so here it is.
An overarching theme is this: Matt, the creator of Exandria and DM for Critical Role, created Essek. The entire cast of Critical Role likes him. Liam O'Brien, as Caleb, chose to romance him. Now, none of this prevents you from disliking him, but I think people pile their hate on Essek because they don't want to admit they are upset with choices the cast members have made. (For what it's worth, this is why I think it's healthy to be able to express that you are frustrated with a cast member's character choices or with developments in the campaign or creative choices generally, and treating expressions of dislike as taboo or worse, inherently problematic, ultimately makes for a far more toxic fandom than one in which people can comfortably say "I don't like this"). Essek is an NPC, and as the post that led me to write this up states, he is a character who represents Matt's narrative decisions and the cast's choices in Campaign 2. To be mad at him is to be mad at a puppet because for whatever reason you are unwilling to admit a dislike for what the puppeteer is doing.
Now: why Essek specifically?
People who shipped Caleb with Jester do this a lot. I'll admit to my own biases re the C2 ships but I do reject this being pure fanwank because people who shipped other Caleb ships and were still around in the late campaign either mostly acted like adults, or just kind of threw Essek into the mix. The thing really is that a lot of people who shipped Caleb and Jester are very big fans of Liam specifically, and Liam and Laura's dynamic, and are loathe to say that Liam decided not to have Caleb significantly pursue the relationship; that Laura chose to have Jester act utterly unaware of the relationship; and that Liam decided, instead of having Caleb pine endlessly, to pursue another potential romantic interest. I also suspect that some abuse of power in specific fandom spaces gave people false hope and inflamed resentment. A lot of these people also hate on Fjord but tend to be quieter about that because it's harder to pretend a PC isn't deeply tied to a cast member.
There is a subset of fans who treat mlm ships and wlw ships (or male and female characters) as locked in some kind of zero sum game in which the existence of one dims the light of the other. This is preposterous. I cannot imagine a more wretched and unhappy fandom experience than miserably tallying up fics and art and judging success not by quality and enjoyment of what content there is but rather whether there's more for your ship or more for other ships. I have joked that when my favorite character is popular I enjoy that they're popular, and when they're not, I enjoy that I clearly have refined and superior taste and I recommend others adopt this mentality. I also have half-joked that it would be fascinating to do a survey tallying the quantity of posts complaining about, say, Caleb and Essek's relationship someone has made, vs. how many posts they've made about (for example) Beau and Yasha's relationship, because a lot of the time the energy spent complaining, or worse, harassing others over their preferences could have addressed the problem had it instead been devoted to creating fanworks for your ship of choice.
Also very generally, while it's true that there's no shortage of annoying fans of Essek, I promise, there's no shortage of annoying and shitty fans of basically every character and ship including the ones you like.
For his appearance in Campaign 3 specifically, I think people are blaming Essek for the fact that this is the Chickens Coming Home to Roost, Avengers Assemble campaign. If you take issue with the characters of Bells Hells being overshadowed by those from past campaigns, the time to make that complaint was when Laudna and Orym showed up as PCs with strong ties to Delilah and Keyleth, or at the very least when Keyleth was brought in as a ringer to help resurrect Laudna (and, as someone who did make those complaints at the time and has since accepted this is the Past Campaigns Campaign...this has not been the case). Multiple party members (as played by cast members) expressed interest and excitement in Aeor before Essek (even as Seth) was mentioned. Bells Hells (as played by the Critical Role cast) want to go to Aeor. You do not have to like it, but this is not Essek's fault, as he is an NPC as part of the story driven by the cast's choices.
I've said this before but it bears nonstop repeating: when the CR cast says it's their table, it does not mean "it's their table and above criticism." It means "they are making the choices they make to play a game that they will enjoy." You can and should say that you're not enjoying it. It won't change what they do, but you'll feel better. But Essek isn't a real person with real agency. If his appearance is upsetting you, you need to attribute that to Matt's choices and decide if this campaign is still something you wish to watch and if this fandom is still something in which you wish to participate. Acting like Essek is some kind of horrible natural disaster ruining your lovely picnic and not a very deliberate choice by Matt is a transparently absurd denial of reality.

love when i see a book rec list where half the items on it are things i liked / thought were okay / haven't read but am intrigued by... and then there's just one thing on there i hate and it ruins the whole list for me. i'm like. sorry. if you enjoyed the vibes of XYZ i cannot trust your taste at all. i object.
#saw an arthurian novel i really really disliked on a list earlier#and was like oh we have wildly different ideas about what makes a good lancelot story#i can't trust ANY of your recommendations anymore#(what i think makes a good lancelot story: loyal idiot#self sacrifice. absurd social rituals. himbo knights. shenanigans.#unfortunately i cannot STAND lancelot books that put him in like. post roman britain#and cut out the christian elements#– if it is a secondary world that's different but historical that just does not work –#regardless of your feelings about christianity lancelot is incredibly christian#if you want a post roman early arthurian knight who is all gritty and pagan#don't fucking pick the french guy known for his part in the grail cycle#omg like it's just all wrong for him)#wow it has been many years since i read that book and apparently i STILL HAVE OPINIONS ABOUT IT#i just. argh. there are OTHER KNIGHTS. you don't have to do this to Lancelot#they wanna do the whole doomed love triangle and i'm like#but that's the least interesting thing about lancelot#or like. they always do it in really boring ways#i want 100% more chaos#i want galehaut to be there because. it's better that way#i want – and i cannot stress this enough – lancelot to have zero braincells#also the really annoying thing about the list in question is that i know a book that DOES do what the original asker wanted#but it isn't published yet#goddamn author friends not releasing their books according to my recommendation needs#néide has opinions about books

it's kind of funny to me, albeit very interesting, that I'm a very picky eater and yet have also become a locavore and something of a 'foodie' per se, I really enjoy food (and cooking!), and going to unique and sometimes upscale restaurants serving ~local ingredients~ and I really value a quality dining experience and learning the character of new places through their food. yet I got a 29 on that picky eater test lol
#is this a contradiction? like im just wondering if there's other picky eaters out there who also are really into food#picky eaters get stereotyped into 'so you only eat chicken nuggets and french fries'#but I almost never go out to eat unless i'm traveling#I cook all my meals and I love discovering new combinations of foods and flavors I like and I eat quite healthy#(I don't really like fried foods or fast food so like. what foods one is picky about varies way more than is commonly realized)#like an average dinner for me is wild-caught salmon with garlic-sauteed swiss chard and wild rice#but the number of foods i do not like is. through the roof according to mainstream society or smth.#and it's true i dislike a Lot of vegetables and fruits. but the things i do like I try to eat a lot of#there's a pretty small sliver of flavors and ingredients i enjoy from the total global pool of foods. but within it i try to be creative#and i love food and cooking more than anything#food is one of the greatest joys of life for me#idk. i just have not heard about others having this sort of dichotomy and i'd like to know if this is a thing#maybe bc i'm an ecologist? like all my coworkers are either vegans or hunters or locavores#i'll eat p much any game or fish#my desire to eat local is an ideological one as much as a flavor and nutritional one#and because of my ulcerative colitis i have additional restrictions (not enforced. but Recommended) on my diet#such as reducing processed sugar for unrefined sugars and using gluten alternatives when i bake etc#it's just an interesting mix of things imo and it seems inexplicable to people i try to explain it to irl

Please be respectful, I will not tolerate any form of toxicity and you'll be instantly blocked and reported.
This has been an important message.
Good luck. (With dealing with my ass lol)

isnt the FODMAP diet only supposed to be followed for like... a period of time? to figure out what is bothering ur stomach?? i dont think its supposed to be like a permanent diet but im ignant
sort of. honestly i think calling it a diet isn’t quite the right word but high-FODMAP foods are foods that trigger gastrointestinal flare ups (ibs, crohns, ulcerative colitis, sensitive stummy disorders, ect) and it’s more just foods to watch out for. i guess it could be used for a short amount of time to figure stuff out but if i know broccoli/dairy/onions/garlic/wheat/ect is gonna hurt my stomach real bad every time why would i eat them….
im not strict about this btw, but i do notice a BIG change when im being careful with what i eat (NO PAIN), so it’s semi-permanent for me
