   As soon as she read her text, Aeva made haste to get to him. She had barely gotten out of bed when she saw his message, prompting her to nearly fly out of bed, get dressed in the first things she pulled out, and get in an Uber, stat. Never mind that she had to go to work in two hours’ time; that could wait. Right now, Milo was in such a state, and every fibre of her being sprang into action. 

   She didn’t get much from his text, other than the fact that Guasparre Scordato of the Scordato Scorpions had gone to his home, and the impromptu visit had resulted in a particularly nasty fight. But surely there must be more to the story; she’d have to ask him later. Right now, her main focus was to get to his place, even so much as telling the driver to floor it. 

   Once the car pulled up to Milo’s place, Aeva rushed out of the vehicle, running up to the house without a moment’s hesitation. She found Katiska just a little past the front doors, at which point she was quick to ask, “Where is he? What happened?”

Special Issue Brief

Being from the United States the issue of immigration is one that headlines the media on a daily basis. This is not just an American one but a pressing issue that has been a talking point across the Atlantic in Europe as well. Greece is one of the most unique countries in the world, located in the southeast tip our Europe on with the Aegean Sea to the east and Turkey just a few miles away. This is extremely important when it comes to immigration because it is a quick trip for asylum seekers looking for a better life to make their way into Europe. In the past few years Greece has acted as the main gateway into Europe and just when they thought they were done with major crisis after the major economic recession in 2008, the migrant crisis has shaped up to be just as serious.

           In recent weeks The Greek government has announced emergency measures to deal with what it calls “huge waves” of asylum seekers arriving from Turkey amid mounting fears of the 2015 migrant crisis being replayed on the country’s shores. Since the start of the Syrian war in 2011, 250,000 Syrians have sought asylum in Greece, and more than 1 million people have attempted to reach other countries in the European Union by travel through Greece. This is all stemming from the recent fighting going on in Syria displacing millions of people. The journey through Turkey for these Syrian refugees is the easiest path to seek safety and a better life. Nearly half of the 56,000 refugee and migrant arrivals in Europe this year have come through the Greek islands, according to the UN.  With all of these migrants coming to different islands in Greece hoping to be accepted and brought to the mainland Greece and the EU had to do something. Migrant camps were set up to house these people looking for a better life, the only issue is that the camps that were built can’t withstand the amount of people coming in. Many camps such as Katiskas in Northwestern Greece and Moria in the island of Lesbos have been suffering with overcrowding for years. Katiskas is just one small part of a wider, much bleaker picture. The infamous Moria camp on the island of Lesbos has grown around three times in size since 2015. More than 13,000 live inside and around an installation whose capacity is supposed to be a mere 3,000. As you can imagine the living conditions inside these refugee camps are extremely inhumane. The death toll is rising, violence is rife, and ever more children show symptoms of “resignation syndrome” – they simply lie down and stop interacting with others, a condition that predominately affects “psychologically traumatized children and adolescents in the midst of a strenuous and lengthy migration process,” according to experts.  

           Along with this many more problems have occurred from the overcrowded migrant camps on the Greek islands. Aid workers see a mental health crisis among refugees on the island. Since July, the number of children with severe mental health issues has more than doubles to 73, according to doctors without borders. These families are fleeing a country full for violence and oppression, always having to worry about terrorist groups. While reading a New York Times article, it mentioned the story of an Afghan mother, Sohaila Hajizadeh, who fled to Greece after the Taliban attacked her family’s home, said had frequently been turned away by doctors when seeking treatment for her teenage son, who has severed psychological trauma. From wrist to shoulder, the boy’s arms are covered in self-inflicted knife wounds.

           Due to these horrible conditions in overcrowded camps across Europe that is causing illness and death to these asylum seekers like the story of Sohaila Hajizadeh are causing a recent up rise within the migrants. Only a few days ago a migrant protest took place at the Katsikas refugee camp. Initially, the protest was reported as one by locals against the refugees. It was quickly established, however, that the refugees themselves were the protesters. Their goal was to prevent the arrival of police buses bringing in more people to the camp.  Along with that there is unrest in the island of Lesbos where the Moria camp is located. About 3 weeks ago, a fire ravaged living  containers in the camp, officially killing one women, who has been named in the media as Faride Tajik, a 49-year-old mother. The recent reports which said that the migrants started the fire startled the migrants in the camp.  One asylum seeker stated, “Everyone knows the situation of our country,” she says emphatically. “There is war everywhere why would we start a fire here? Why would we burn ourselves?” This just sums up the array of inhumane conditions in these camps.

           The recently elected New Democracy, a right-wing party, has promised to “simplify” the asylum process, create closed reception and identification center’s for refugees on the Greek Islands, and return 10,000 people to Turkey by the end of 2020- measures which have concerned rights groups. This may sound like a good thing But Dr. Konstantinos Tsitselikis, an associate professor in human rights at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, told Al Jazeera that he doubted the new government would be able to live up to its hard line on immigration reform.

           To go with this criticism, human rights groups have been trying to help these asylum seekers to safety for years and have advocated for better conditions within the camps. But with all the work they do to provide food and warmth to the people of these camps conditions just keep getting worse because more and more migrants flow in every day.

           The migrant crisis in Greece is an extremely complicated and unprecedented crisis. These people are running from an extremely dangerous life, living in fear everyday of being hurt. But when they asylum seekers reach the shores of the Greek Isles, they find that life is just as bad at these camps. With the new center-right government in Greece immigration reforms will only get worse as time goes on. This is an issue at the core of human rights and something has to be done.

Formula ykkösten kauden päättävän Abu Dhabin GP:n avausharjoitukset ovat parhaillaan käynnissä. Kimi Räikkösen Ferrari sai ensimmäisessä sessiossa hieman uutta ilmettä.

Räikkönen syöksyi radalle niin sanottu “katiska” perässään. Ferrari yrittää selvittää perjantaina uuden diffuusorinsa vaikutusta auton aerodynamiikkaan.

Tähän tarkoitukseen “katiska” soveltuu hyvin, sillä se on merkittävässä osassa, kun tutkitaan ilmavirtojen vaikutusta.

"Kyllä me selvitään, jos ei tänään, niin huomenna!"

En koskaan uskonut kirjoittavani blogin tyyppisiä julkaisuja tai esittäväni omia mielipiteitäni tämän tyyppisessä muodossa. Toisaalta olen joskus ajatellut, että koen polttavaa tarvetta lukea, kirjoittaa ja luoda jotakin uutta. Ehkä elämäni viimeaikaiset tapahtumat yhdistettynä arkiseen aherrukseen sai aikaan sysäyksen, joka pakotti tämän junan liikkeelle. Ehkä näin Janne Patjaksen tyylissä tuoda julki omat mielipiteet jotakin innoittavaa. Ehkä Jussi Untolahden blogi ja Juha-Petri Mäkelän raviartikkelit olivat tämän kaiken takana. Ehkä uskon siihen, että kun teet jotakin sydämellä, ei siitä voi syntyä mitään huonoa.

Kelataan sen verran aikaa taaksepäin, että saavumme pisteeseen, jossa ajatukseni kävivät harhailemaan ja mietin että olisi mukava purkaa ajatuksiani jonkinlaiseen kirjalliseen muotoon. Kelattuamme riittävästi saavumme hetkeen, jossa harhailen vuonna 2011 noin 27-vuotiaana jossakin Tampereella, melko vahvasti humaltuneena ja hoen itsekseni isäni opettamaa mantraa ”Kyllä me selvitään, jos ei tänään, niin huomenna!”. Ilta päättyi normaalisti, mutta nukahtaessani en ollut tietoinen, että huomisen oli määrä muuttaa koko loppuelämäni.

Viettäessäni iltapäiväkrapulaa, tulin lukeneeksi muutamia blogikirjoituksia ja muita sekalaisia artikkeleja aina tieteestä viihteeseen. Illalla kirjauduin City.fi palveluun ja selailin naisten profiileja – rehellisyyden nimissä on todettava, että sieltä löytyi erittäin kaunis nainen nimimerkillä ”Katiska”. Katiskan selkeitä vahvuuksia olivat pohojalainen hullunpalo silmissä ja toisaalta hyvin arvaamaton hymy, joka kätkee taakseen paljon enemmän kun kertoo – olin siis kohdannut eräänlaisen ”Häjyn”. Todetaan selvyyden vuoksi, että en itse ole Pohjanmaalta, olen Jaalasta, mutta jonkinlainen yhdistelmä Tamperetta ja Kymenlaaksoa sai minut lähestymään tuota naista. Kehuin hänen hulluja silmiä ja iskin viestiin mukaan smailarin. Melko kauan jouduin odottamaan vastausta, jopa niin kauan, että jos olisi mennyt päivän pidempään, en todennäköisesti olisi koskaan kuullut hänestä. Katsokaas kun City.fi palvelu säilytti siihen aikaan lähettämiäsi viestejä tietyn ajan, jonka jälkeen ne hävisivät eetteriin. Tällä kertaa kävi kuitenkin hyvä mäihä ja tytteli vastasi kysellen kiinnostuneena lisää.

Totta tosiaan en koskaan ajatellut tapaavani ketään netin kautta, en ainakaan vakavasti, mutta siinä se tilanne nyt sitten oli. Lisämausteena sopassa oli vielä överiromanttinen tarina siitä, että jos nimimerkki ”Katiska” olisi päivää myöhemmin katsonut profiiliaan City.fi palvelussa, emme olisi ikinä tavanneet – ainakaan tämän palvelun kautta. Lisäksi tilanteessa oli vielä ollut muuttujana, että nimimerkki ”Katiska” ei ollut yrittäessään kirjautua palveluun, muistanut salasanaa lukuisista yrityksistä huolimatta ja meinannut useaan otteeseen luovuttaa.  Häntä oli siis ajanut pakottava tarve kirjautua palveluun, joka tietenkin on ollut ”kohtalo”, joka lopulta sai hänet muistamaan salasanan.

Keskustelimme netissä ja puhelimessa jokaisena viikon päivänä useita tunteja. Aika tuntui melko suhteelliselta käsitteeltä ja touhu meni jopa niin pitkälle, että tulostin nimimerkki ”Katiskan” kuvan jääkaapin oveeni, koska pidin sitä erityisen kauniina. Kuvassa oli jotakin vangitsevaa - olin pahan kerran pulassa.

Tiesittekö että katiska on yksi vanhimmista pyydymalleista. Olin alusta asti varma, että katiskalla ja "Katiskalla" oli jotakin yhteistä. Suunta oli annettu, enää tarvitsi löytää määränpää.
