As Astlibra opens, your character finds himself stranded in a cabin at the edge of a lake, with nothing but an endless forest in front of him. After years at the cabin, he finally resolves to escape, trekking for eight years without contact through the forest, with no idea of when he may finally reach the edge.

Developed over the course of 15 years, by solo developer Keizo, you can feel the creator’s preoccupation with time and scale throughout Astlibra. The story’s themes are obsessed with time, with how our actions reverberate through it, and what we would do if given the opportunity to go back and change them. The scale of the game itself is tremendous, with system after system stacked upon each other in a way that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Tri-Ace title. Every system has been reexamined, throwing off the general assumptions of the genre.

Simple interactions such as buying an item from a shop have been complicated, requiring you to have the appropriate materials on hand to purchase them, keeping you on the lookout for new drops from enemies, or experimenting with the crafting system to see if you can work out the recipe. Grinding these materials will naturally push you into the multiple growth systems, with both a traditional skill point system, but also a sprawling map of character bonuses that can be purchased with gems dropped from enemies. This cartographic journey will unlock more abilities, and ability slots, getting you excited to head right back into combat and keep the loop going.

Combat has the vibes of a later Ys title, if the series had continued following a sidescrolling format. The basic moveset isn't too complicated, with a ground combo, a launcher and spike, and a shield. Early on you'll also get an invincible back dash and magic spells, which enable some strong hit and run tactics. There's a varied arsenal to collect, and while they generally don't have significant moveset changes, considerations like range, attack speed and the unique skills you gain from mastering them keep weapons in rotation even as you progress.

Positioning plays a huge part in combat, and the small cooldowns when your shield breaks, or your backdash ends can end with fatal damage if you're caught in the wrong group of enemies. Magic becomes essential here, providing crowd control and the ability to reposition yourself, with invincibility during the duration of the move. Mana builds through combat, empties outside of it, so you're also incentivized to use spells as soon as you're able, since you'll never be able to stockpile it for future battles.

Despite the myriad ways to prevent damage, you'll rarely come out of a battle unscathed, so spending and refreshing resources becomes essential to surviving even basic encounters. Astlibra is unafraid to push you to take advantage of every system, to the point where the very first boss appears nearly unbeatable until you learn every system. It's an ambitious and gutsy choice, one of many that go against conventional wisdom in modern RPG design. Astlibra is full of these, and it’s a true feat that it manages to remain coherent throughout.

A similar sentiment could be said about Astlibra’s aesthetics. Collaged almost entirely from a number of royalty free images and sound sources, Astlibra has a distinct look to it that calls to mind early Playstation games, where digitized imagery began to become popular. Stitching these images into a single world is a feat of its own, and it manages to stay coherent enough that it never draws attention to itself. Part of this is thanks to a group of professional artists, including Vanillaware veteran Shigatake, who provided the character portraits and sprites, and Haku Tatsufuchi, who created the art for the dragon bosses. The music is equally well selected, with a variety of musical styles, but all feeling as appropriate as if they were composed for the game. The most surprising were the tracks for the many emotional moments of Astlibra, which did a fantastic job selling the drama, something hard to do even in games with bespoke soundtracks.

It’s those big character moments that form the core of Astlibra for me. Even as I enjoyed playing with the various systems of the game, all of it remained motivated by my desire to unravel the next mystery, and my impatience for the next plot beat. Astlibra is full of heart, and it was impossible for me not to be charmed by it.

When you spend so many years working on a single thing, it’s hard not to lose faith in what you’re making, and harder to keep a coherent vision as you and the world around you continue to change. Despite the odds, Astlibra manages to hit on every aspect it tries for. It’s a triumph that kept me astounded at what a single person could accomplish.

Publisher WhisperGames and developer KEIZO will release side-scrolling action RPG ASTLIBRA Revision for PC via Steam on October 13, the companies announced.

ꕤ Shinichiro comes home a lot of times with random cuts and bruises. Not all of them are from fights, most of them happen while working with the bikes.

ꕤ But the nights he does comes home all bruised and battered, he wants nothing more than to crawl into your arms.

ꕤ He insists that he can take care of his own wounds but he wants you close before and after.

ꕤ He's a man but wounds hurt and he's not afraid to show his pain or even to cry, not caring about if it's considered “unmanly” or whatever.

ꕤ Shin adores you even more when you get the first aid kit out and insist on patching him up despite his initial protests.

ꕤ He feels so bad when you take care of him like that because him getting into fights and ending up as a punching bag should never be your problem.

ꕤ You of course don't mind it, gently dabbing the cotton swab over the cuts to clean them out and Shin doesn't even wince when it burns.

ꕤ His eyes are trained on your face, smiling softly when your brows furrow from concentration or when you pout at a specially nasty wound.

ꕤ Quiet “thank you’s” are mumbled by him when you start applying ointment before looking for band aids and start to snicker to yourself.

ꕤ “Looks like you only have the ones for your siblings left,” you say amused and present him the little dinosaur and pink star bandaids which makes him laugh.

ꕤ “I use these more than they do. Keep forgetting to buy new ones,” he explains amused and picks the green dinosaur ones.

ꕤ Gently you apply them to the few wounds that need a bandaid, a pink star one right on his cheek because you insisted on it.

ꕤ Shinichiro can't help but smile when he looks himself over. It shouldn't be so funny but you somehow took away the pain and tiny dinosaurs litter his skin as you make sure to kiss each and every bruise.

☰ Benkei:

ꕤ Benkei rarely ever needed you to patch him up, usually he would do so before he comes back home and you can only see his knuckles bandaged - the skin probably broke from throwing one too many punches.

ꕤ But this time he came home with a cut right on his nose, his face black and blue along with his almost signature look of busted knuckles.

ꕤ “Benks… let me help you,” you mumble and practically drag him to the bathroom where you force him to sit on the edge of the bathtub.

ꕤ Benkei remained silent, far too tired to protest your tender hands and silently he thanked you for not even asking about any of it.

ꕤ Without further questions you kneeled down and started cleaning his knuckles, a hiss escaping him from the sting but the moment you kissed the back of his hand it was all better.

ꕤ While you wrapped bandages around his big hands he started apologizing to you for causing you trouble but you scolded him for thinking that this is trouble.

ꕤ Once his hands were taken care of you raised to stand between his legs, a frown on your lips when you saw his busted nose.

ꕤ “You know what I told you about cuts on your face,” you started and he only chuckled, knowing you get the hello kitty bandaids out now in hopes he will be more careful next time.

ꕤ His friends tease him to no end about it, but he doesn't mind. He thinks it's cute that you care enough about him to even do this.

ꕤ A bright pink bandaid rested on the bridge of his nose now and you couldn't help the laugh escaping your throat but he followed right behind.

ꕤ “That should be my new daily look, don't you think? I look so dangerous now,” he joked around and pulled you closer for a kiss.

☰ Takeomi:

ꕤ Takeomi never came home when he was vulnerable, not wanting to seem weak around you.

ꕤ But he seemed to have forgotten about the punch he got into his face hours back that left his forehead split open, dried blood staining his forehead and cheek.

ꕤ When he came home you immediately crowded him, not used to seeing your lover like this and cupped his face.

ꕤ “Calm down I'm not dying,” he grumbled and held onto your wrists to remove your hands from his face but you jerked your hands out of his grasp.

ꕤ “Perhaps you're not dying but let me at least clean this up,” you insist and he follows you into the bathroom to sit down on the closed toilet seat.

ꕤ “Only so I won't ruin the sheets with blood,” he lied with a straight face, craving your gentle touch, wanting to be taken care of

ꕤ Ever so gently you cleaned his wound for him, standing between his legs since he always sat with his legs wide open.

ꕤ His hands rested on your butt as you cleaned his wound, a dirty smirk on his lips “I need to. It hurts sooooo bad,” he mused, giving the globes of your ass a squeeze.

ꕤ You knew he was playing around by the way the smirk danced over his lips but you let him, planning your own revenge.

ꕤ Once the wound was cleaned up and the ointment put on you got out the most childish bandaids you could find, little green stripes with glittering duckies.

ꕤ Takeomi didn't even see the bandaid until he looked at your handiwork in the mirror “you're so gonna pay for that, brat,” he chuckled and threw you over his shoulder, carrying you to the bedroom.

☰ Wakasa:

ꕤ Waka rarely ever came home with wounds that needed tending, some bruises at most, if he's been training with Benkei a lot that day.

ꕤ But the few times he did, he didn't bother tending to them, insisting that cuts will heal on their own and bruises fade in a few days.

ꕤ Whenever you caught him with wounds he knew he was done for, protesting against your soft treatment so you learned how to drag him to the bathroom by force.

ꕤ “I'm not some kid. Let me at least do this myself,” he protested and ripped his arm from your grip but you gave him a stern look.

ꕤ “Even Senju acts more mature. Stop acting up,” you fired back, hating how he neglected himself from time to time. He has a big ego but that won't heal wounds.

ꕤ In the end it's a fight of who’s more stubborn and usually you win by either insisting until he gives up or by handing him his fave beer which he drinks grumpy while you tend to him.

ꕤ “You need to be more careful next time,” you scold him as you dab a cotton swab drenched in alcohol over his wounds.

ꕤ There is absolutely no reaction in his face but the way his muscles tense tell you that he's in pain and you frown, not wanting to hurt him.

ꕤ Once you were done, you got the last few bandaids out, one butterfly clip for a deeper cut so it will stay together and cute band aids with pawprints.

ꕤ Waka jerked back upon seeing the rainbow colored band aids “that one, yes,” he points to the butterfly clip and gives the colorful paw print ones a dirty look “and those... don't you dare come near me with them,” he growled out.

ꕤ You had to stifle a laugh at his reaction and opened a light blue one after using the butterfly clip on the big cut, forcing it into his skin while trying to be as gentle as possible. “Just this one... the rest can stay open if you don't put on a shirt,” you cooed and smiled at the light blue pawprints covering a cut.

ꕤ Wakasa glared at you for a moment but knew protest was futile. “At least give my shoulders a massage to make up for this shit,” he mumbled and pointed to the cute band aid decorating his chest.

- shin is very open about his feelings, to the point where it's not even really a secret that he likes you — especially if you're close friends with him, there's a good chance you know already ahaha

- i think he's the type to get flustered whenever you initiate physical touch, even if it's accidental

- one time at the bike shop you unknowingly brushed your hand against his when you passed one of his tools to him and he literally thought about it for the rest of the day

- he's so touch starved </3

- his friends constantly make fun of him for the way he acts around you, while his siblings tell him you're way too pretty for him and out of his league

- he really can't catch a break💀

- shin gets upset if he finds out another guy likes you too, and he can't help but feel jealous whenever you laugh or smile more around the other guy than you do with him </3

- he really wants to impress you, he likes telling you stories from his black dragon days and goes into detail about all the fights he got into — he definitely over-exaggerates them a lot though and leaves out the parts where he got his ass handed to him💀

- if at any point he overheard you say you hated smokers he would literally try to quit just for you, or at the very least put out his cigarettes and avoid smoking when you're around him

- he’s such a cutie, he secretly watches those youtube videos titled ‘how to be a good boyfriend’ and ‘how to get your crush to like you back’ </3

- whenever shin notices you're nearby he subconsciously starts fixing his appearance — he’ll straighten his posture and run his fingers through his hair, he always wants to look his best in front of you

- if you ever compliment his cologne he makes sure to wear extra when he knows he's going to see you that day, he also likes to spray it on his hoodies and jackets and offers them to you when it's cold

- speaking of which, his heart literally skips a beat whenever he sees you wearing his clothes, it makes him feel like you're already dating and he can't help but start daydreaming about what it might be like being yours </3

- shin really wants to ask you out, but after being rejected so many times before he can't help but worry that you'll reject him too — however he eventually decides to take the chance and tell you how he feels, it's not as if you haven't already caught on anyway

- if you reject him he'll obviously be super upset, way more upset than he was after any of his previous rejections, but to be honest he was probably expecting it </3

- on the other hand, if you accept his confession he’ll be very caught off guard after being turned down so much in the past, but he'll be super happy nonetheless and won't be able to stop bragging to his friends and siblings that he finally has a girlfriend, and how he's so lucky that he gets to be dating someone as amazing as you <3

: ̗̀➛ wakasa

- waka isn't very vocal about his feelings towards you, and therefore he’s pretty good at hiding it to the point where almost no one would suspect that he liked you — but that's not to say his friends haven't picked up on it by now

- they constantly catch him staring at you, and he's really not as subtle as he thinks he is, half the time he's not even paying attention to them when they're talking to him because he's too distracted by how pretty you are

- if you end up noticing him staring he likes holding eye contact with you until you get shy and look away, he thinks it's adorable and it makes his heart flutter seeing you all bashful <3

- he usually has the same deadpan expression and rarely shows any emotion, but when you're around he's like a completely different person — he's noticeably more expressive and talkative and he smiles more often when he's with you

- he’s so in love </3

- waka is also considerably more touchy and clingy with you — it doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary to most people, but if you pay close attention you’ll start to notice that he's always looking for the opportunity to sit next to you and be close to you wherever he can <3

- his love language is definitely physical touch, and he likes brushing his fingers against your skin and leaving fleeting touches whenever possible — he’ll feign innocence and pretend it was an accident but in reality he's totally doing it on purpose

- as much as waka likes physical contact, he always makes sure to respect your personal boundaries as he'd never want to make you uncomfortable

- he's the type to notice small differences about your appearance, like if you've changed your hair or done your makeup differently

- he pays a lot of attention to you, more than you probably realise <3

- i don't think waka would make a huge deal out of confessing to you, he'd probably either just come up to you one day and tell you straight up or alternatively he might drunkenly blurt it out to you by accident

- if it was the latter you most likely wouldn't take him seriously at first, and so he'd make sure to tell you again once he was sober, as he wouldn't want you to think he was just messing with you because he was drunk

- if you rejected him he'd definitely be humbled, as i don't think he's someone that’s used to being turned down, but he’ll respect your decision of course and hopes that you can still be friends

- now that he's finally struck out with a girl he knows that shin will have something to make fun of him for after years of being teased for his 20 rejections💀

- however if you accept his confession you’ll finally get to see the real waka, he stops holding back and becomes especially clingy and needy for your attention, a side of him that only you get to see <3

- omi isn't the best at handling his emotions, especially when it comes to you — at first he was in complete denial about liking you, hoping that if he ignored his feelings towards you that they would eventually go away

- if his friends ever mentioned you or implied that he had a thing for you he would insist that you were annoying and would tell them he couldn't stand you💀

- little did he know they saw right through him, it was pretty obvious how fond of you he was just from the way he looked at you

- i feel like it got to the point where he was so stubborn about it that waka had to go as far as to pretend he was going to ask you out just to get omi to finally admit that he had feelings for you

- omi is the embodiment of being mean to you because he likes you — he's always teasing you and loves to push your buttons to try and get a reaction out of you, he thinks you’re cute when you get mad

- however if you tease him back it catches him completely off guard, he gets all flustered and starts stumbling over his words </3

- you always catch him looking at you from across the room, he tries so hard to play it off as if he wasn't just checking you out but he does it all the time to the point where it's obvious💀

- while omi may struggle with being affectionate towards you, the way he shows you he cares is through doing favours for you, for example by offering to take you home on his motorcycle

- beware of riding with him though because he likes to randomly speed up out of nowhere, you just assume it's because he's a bad driver but little do you know he only does it because he’s hoping you’ll get scared and wrap your arms around his waist

- if you do end up clinging to him he’ll more than likely make fun of you for it, but his heart will be racing the entire time — he’s just glad that you can't see his face because he can feel his cheeks getting warm </3

- if you did end up telling him you liked him he'd be very taken aback by your confession, but after the initial shock wore off he'd of course tell you he felt the same way, unable to wipe the grin off his face <3
