Barbie: Yeah, I’m a Guy Who Watched the Barbie Movie.

Sooooo... I’ve watched the Barbie movie. And I am a man. So deal with it.

What is the Barbie Movie?

Basically, the Barbie Movie is about... well, Barbie. Everything pink and feminine as far as the eye can see. The movie itself however is taking it in a far different direction.

The film’s director Greta Gerwig is basically a surprising director to have for the film. Gerwig is known for her female-driven movies like Ladybird and Little Women to name a few. So it’s no surprise that Barbie is on a journey of self-discovery about her identity as a woman and a Barbie.

There’s also this whole Barbenheimer meme going on, but I’m talking about Barbie.

After Watching...?

The Barbie Movie is both a jaunty jab at the stereotypes of both male and female roles and Mattel, as well as a beautifully hilarious film thanks to Margot Robbie’s portrayal as the classic or stereotypical Barbie. Robbie’s Barbie goes though a transformation from the definitive Barbie to a fully grown being. Her existence is put into question as she learns more and more about the real world and the harsh truths that come with it. She slowly discovers that she’s more than a Barbie, but an actual person with autonomy and choice.

America Ferrera kills it as a lover of Barbie who had to live with Barbie’s standards in the real world. Ferrera gives a powerful speech about the constant frustrations of what it’s like to be a woman, perfectly encapsulating the highs and lows of the gender in a completely human way. Ferrera is the perfect person to take on this role based on her work from Ugly Betty and Superstore, showing more humanly real traits than superficial perfection.

Ryan Gosling’s Ken as an antagonist made a lot of sense once you think about the theme of film. Ken is essentially the butt of the joke that Barbie takes for granted, making him feel inadequate. So when he finds the respect he craved in the real world, he starts to build a “Kendom” for him and his fellow Kens to feel good about themselves and step out of the shadow of the Barbies. It is exactly how we all think would happen if Ken found out about patriarchy.

It basically tackles both ideas of feminism, patriarchy, hyper femininity, and toxic masculinity in this film without making it too preachy or forced in your face or that men are trash and women are perfect. No, it takes those ideas in a way that addresses the flaws in each set of philosophies while not demonizing or glorifying any side. They’re just opposing ideas with their own problems to deal with and some good ideas that are taken too much as fact without common sense.

The scene that moved me the most was Barbie’s choice to become human after experiencing life and having a conversation with the creator of Barbie Ruth Handler. Combined with the haunting Billie Eilish song “What Was I Made For” and flashes of various girls and women living life, it was a beautiful tribute to what Barbie was initially made for: a tribute to a daughter from a mother.

What Was Barbie Made For?

Barbie was made for those who think Barbie is just a doll that goes against modern women and those who believe Barbie to be an inspiring figure to strive, but most of all those who know the full history of a mother-daughter relationship in its creation.

If you love Barbie, you’ll love the movie. If you hate Barbie, you’ll love the movie. If you don’t know Barbie, you’ll love the movie.

I couldn’t help but avert my gaze to the charismatic clod seated by my side, over the next few hours my tentative touches left me overwhelmed. My cheeks flashed from red to dull as his words found a way to make me blush.

I haven’t felt this way since-

But I couldn’t hold onto him any longer, I’d spent too long trying to wrangle him in, even Garrett could see how monumental my hints were to him. Since Kelly, I had realised I wouldn't be his type of girl, not bottle blonde or tiny, not a pageant princess. Tough luck but I’m solid as a rock, you can’t let things get you down, you can’t cry over boys you don’t even have.

But with Jake- I had a chance. A fresh start, a me that actually cares about herself. Not some chaotic party girl that used uppers as a coping mechanism. I’m not totally sober, I still drink, but on nights out that’s kind of complimentary.

I just got sick of being sick. Condo parties with a crowd of people I didn’t even recognise, tagging along with my ragtag group of walking injuries. I still care for those friends but I needed to take some time off.

I’m not sure how Jake would react if he knew. I don't know him that well, which is why this is good for me.

I’m so tired I don’t even bother changing out of my pyjama pants, old habits don’t die too hard, I guess. 

Jake holds out a brown bag, encasing a sandwich, probably the only meal he can make. This marks the first item of food I will have ever taken to work with me, he’s too sweet. Throwing on a bra and random graphic tee I’d swiped from a friend, I hail a goodbye to Jake and rev up my car- here’s to my return to my favourite superstore.

Seeing that bright blue sign makes me smile, there-in lies some of the nicest people on this earth. 

I don’t choose to use the staff entrance, gliding through the self-opening doors, Ken gives me a happy fist bump as I stroll past his uniformed self.

The next I see, is Garrett-

‘‘Hey, doll! Good to see you. Come see me and I’ll share my donuts.’‘ He gives me a friendly wink, I brush his shoulder as I walk by him, beelining for my girl.

She stands there, hunched over her counter, scrolling through her phone.

‘‘Damn, this place doesn’t smell so bad today.’‘ I shrug nonchalantly, her head snaps up at me.

‘‘Y/n!’‘ She screams, piercing my ears.

She jogs over to me, abandoning her perch.

A tight hug later, I’m wincing at my side.

‘‘Careful, Chey.’‘ Amy’s warning tone sounds from behind me.

‘‘She looks hot for someone who nearly died.’‘ She matter-of-factly states, motioning me to Amy.

‘‘You can’t say that!’‘ Amy whisper shouts, scared of offending me, I sure do hope she won’t treat me like glass.

‘‘What? She’s got that grungy-just-rolled-out-of-bed look.’‘

‘‘Nah, I’m chill, Ames, I’m not gonna shatter any time soon.’‘ I smile at her, she reciprocates.

‘‘Welcome back.’‘ She nods at me.

‘‘I’m gonna go clock in, need that money.’‘ I huff, traipsing towards the machine, good thing we’re getting an app for it next week.

I actively avoid Dina as I make my way to my locker, which is above Garrett’s.

‘‘Hey, you finally realised you need to eat during the day.’‘ Jonah’s sarcastic lull pulses around the room. A subconscious grin paints my lips.

‘‘Yes, J. I realise now that food is a necessity.’‘ I turn rolling my eyes at him, jokingly. ‘’Jake made it for me, my little helper.’’ I stuff my things into my locker, noticing the empty water bottles I had left a while back.

‘‘Yeah.’‘ He’s quiet, for once, maybe he’s ill.

‘‘Hey, any idea if Marcus is on shift?’‘ I move to take a seat with Jonah. Putting off work is my favourite pastime. 

‘‘Yeah, I think I saw him before, you know where to look.’‘ He looks tired, just about ready to clock out.

‘‘Thanks, dude, I’ll talk to you later.’‘ I ruffle his hair before going off to find my soul sister.

‘‘You got it, babe.’‘ He freezes.

I choke on air, speeding out of the room. What the hell was that?

I’d expect it from Garrett, but-but not Jonah.

Dude.

Here is my recap of the Howard Bamboo (Kent Avenido) episode of the podcast.

Kent is smarter then Howard.

This is another example of art imitating life and life imitating art.

Everyone loves him.

Tiktok and Disney+ have created a whole new group of fans.

People still call Kent, Howard Bamboo.

Kevin’s boyfriend started to quote Howard when Kevin told him Kent was going to be on the show. It freaked out Kevin because he didn’t know his boyfriend watched glee.

Kent originally addiction for Coach Ken Tanaka. He went through all the auditions and didn’t get it but the creators liked him enough to rewrite a part for him.

Howard was originally Ginny a 20 something with bad roots.

Kent was told he looked too young for Ken Tanaka.

He said Patrick Gallagher played Ken perfectly.

Kent can sing.

He did 4 musical numbers on glee.

He didn’t have to sing in his auditions.

Ryan asked Kent if he could sing while they were filming the pilot.

Kent grew up doing musical theater.

They sang For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow live.

Kent said it was so much fun doing the musical numbers.

He didn’t know if Howard would come back after the pilot.

Every episode Howard was in was with Terri (Jessalyn).

It was a dream to be on set .

He knew after seeing a viewing of the pilot he knew the show as something special.

Howard was always in his Sheets and Things uniform.

Panda Express owes something to Kent for all that free promotion.

Poor Howard had a lot going on.

Kent was raised in a family of doctors. His dad and brothers are doctors and his mom and sisters are nurses. He was planning on going on med school. He has two science degrees. He has a minor in fine arts. He got waitlisted and while he was waiting he decided to pursue acting. He went to New York with dreams of being a big Broadway star. His dreams changed and he moved to LA because he wanted to do more film, tv, and commercials.

He didn’t know anyone when he moved to LA.

His initials ambition was to become a cardiologist.

He secretly always wanted to be an actor but didn’t think it was possible.

He took the risk and it paid off.

He has worked on shows like Grace and Frankie, Superstore, and The Mentalist.

Booking gigs is the hardest part of the job.

Howard Bamboo has both helped and hurt Kent’s career. He was getting a lot of notoriety which made getting commercial work hard. That notoriety helped him get roles after glee though.

Playing Howard was easy.

Kent can watch the pilot on repeat. He also likes watching musical numbers.

At one point Poison was his ringtone.

Kevin’s parents use songs he has sung as their ringtones.

Kent enjoyed getting to meet all the adult characters.

He didn’t get to meet Josh Groban. He met him years later at a concert.

Glee was so good at getting people to show their different talents.

Patrick Gallagher was nervous about singing.

Adam Anders and the music department were good at making people sound good even on their bad days.

Kent’s last episode was the 2009 episode at the end of season 6.

He said it brought good closure to his time on the show.

It was really special for the whole cast to do the 2009 episode. It was a way of bringing it back to the start and getting closure all at the same time.

Chris Colfer was a baby at the beginning of the show and by the end everyone was seasoned pros.

Kevin said that just means assholes and everyone laughed.

Kent’s advice to people looking to start out in show business is you have to have a love for it. If you don’t this business willl chew you up and spit you out. You have to rely on that love to get you through the bad times. Just keep going and don’t give up. It you really love it the good times will be so worth it.

Everybody loves Howard Bamboo.

Kent is the absolute best.

Jenna and Kevin said it is nice to get to talk to these actors that played characters they didn’t really get to work with on the show.

After a long and hard road battling personal demons, beverage maker Kirk Buxton has learned to trust his gut the founder of Kirk’s Probiotic Soda, a fizzy drink made in North Vancouver that’s formulated to taste great while providing the microbiome-boosting benefits of fermented kefir.

What started six years ago with $100, enough to buy jars at Ikea and fill them with a brew made in his home, has grown into a business that’s expected to do nearly $1 million in sales over the next 12 months. Buxton’s bottles of soda are available in small independent markets as well as large grocery chains, including Save-On-Foods and the Real Canadian Superstore. On the side of the 330-milliliter bottles are the words “trust your gut” in bold lettering.

Buxton says his life passion is using food to help people. Similarly, the driving force behind his soda brand is to alleviate digestive problems, he said determination to promote a healthy lifestyle wasn’t always top of mind.

After years in the throes of heroin and fentanyl abuse, on the evening of March 10, 2017, Buxton was determined to end his life. Driving along the Sea to Sky highway, he took off his seatbelt and sped into a wall of solid rock white.

Buxton felt relieved that it was all over – until he heard the jarring sound of a tire spinning by his head. He was alive, and upside down.

At the hospital, Buxton expected to be stigmatized for his suicide attempt. Instead, the medical staff treated him with compassion. “I’m still friends with the nurse today,” he said mother at the foot of his bed, lost in a tangle of documents trying to put his financial life back together, was a turning point.

Buxton went into recovery and was soon working as a chef at a men’s treatment center. Even though he was clean, years of putting harmful substances in his body had wreaked havoc on his digestive system.

Reflecting on his personal belief that food is medicine, he decided to trust his gut. Coincidentally, the mother of his recovery roommate was making a drink from fermenting kefir grains. She gave him some of those grains. And after a bit of research, Buxton started making it in his home.

Working in the treatment center, he started giving out kefir water to his friends in the neighborhood, mostly in recovery themselves. Pretty quickly, they started asking if they could buy it from him and started selling two-liter growlers, and it grew from there.

Production of his kefir sodas started out of a shared kitchen in 2020, then moved to a kombucha-making facility. In October 2022, Kirk’s Probiotic Soda moved to its own dedicated production space in North Vancouver, where Buxton grew up his sodas have been bubbling over. Revenues were around $200,000 in the past 12 months, and are on track to hit $1,000,000 over the next 12.

With a background in sales, his brother Ken Buxton has been getting the drinks on shelves all over town. Hollyburn Country Club was one of their first clients, along with City Avenue Markets. With continued momentum, Kirk’s now has deals with big distributors like Horizon Grocery + Wellness and has also stayed connected to the local community, sponsoring Altitude Football Club and doing events for organizations like North Shore Winter Club.
