Bumlets thoughts! The boy was spinning today and my friend told me I should share my thoughts so here we go :) So, Bumlets, one of the background newsies of the 92 movies that was cast for his dancing talent (did you know Dominic Lucero was a background dancer for Michael Jackson, Paul Abdual and Madonna?) and doesn't get to say much, but he for sure has fabulous hair.
He is also named after an actual resident in the Duane Street Lodging house around the time of the strike (there is an entire article I once found on Tumblr and when I find it again I'll try to reblog it) and there it is mentioned he kind of speaks for the other newsies there and is called "The King of the Bums" which is very cool to me I do remember that article being a bit before 1899 so I had some thoughts... What if before Jack came along and became leader not just inside the lodging house but outside to the other boroughs, Bumlets was the one to speak for the matters of the newsies in the lodge, specifically for Kloppman. In turn Kloppman trusts him with locking up the lodge sometimes (I saw that in the fic: "Inside the Lodging House: Hard Truths and Annoying sounds" today and loved it) and if there is a problem with one of the boys he asks if he could talk to him first (as most don't react well to adults as it is). At some point Francis Sullivan, newly named Jack Kelly comes along and is more outwardly a leader, kind of more agressively a leader where Bumlets was usually quiet, polite and not particularly ambitious, he just wanted to help if he could and if someone else wants to be the actual leader he is fine with that too.
Another thing is he has leather suspenders (which you can see in Seize the Day reprise as he is right in the front) which for me means he is putting thought into his appearance and also into buying durable things (here we have a saying roughly translating to "better buy something good than buy twice", so saying you should rather buy expensive long-living things sometimes) even if he's not wearing the fanciest clothes apart from it they still seem well maintained and that just is something you notice. The buyers probably do that too.
Can't forget his boyfriends either (that here is just who I think he would be cute with) which would be Skittery and Swifty <3 He and Skittery stickfight in Carrying the Banner (which looks so fun), then they stand next to each other at the Rally and for Swifty in the scene where Snyder is looking for Jack in the lodge they are always beside each other and there are probably more scenes but those are just the ones coming to mind and me and my friend have been going feral over them. But I think that's better for another post eventually, just wanted to add it!
Another fun fact: Dominic Lucero was in fact the same age as Max Casella and therefore also 25 in 1992. Live with that knowledge folks.
Thanks for reading this!

Day Twelve of So That’s What They Call A Family!
Happy Day Twelve! Today is Medda and Kloppman!
Do we have absolutely any canon that supports this friendship? Nope. Do we care? Not really. They’re the best parents to literally hundreds of children, and they are best friends who complain to each other. They are. We don’t make the rules.

A storm once passed through Manhattan and most definitely humbled how good the older newsies think they were with the youngsters.
Kloppman allowed them to stay for free this day as they certainly weren't going to be going out selling.
Ike started crying once the lightning began. Mike wasn't really sure what was happening, but Ike cried, thus setting him off too. Jack brought out some pencils and scrap paper and drew with them until they calmed down. These drawings are now hung up next to Jack's bed.
Splasher was actually very excited about the storm and stood in front of the window and watched the rain hit against the ground and would clap in excitement when lightning struck. Albert and Finch ended up watching with him just in case anything were to happen but were also clapping along with him and trying to match the kids' energy.
Elmer actually lasted pretty long without breaking down, though once the thunder began, he quickly ran to Race for comfort, who started telling him random stories until he fell asleep in his arms.
It was quite a stressful day for everybody, but they were looking forward to the headline the next day. Those papes would be being sold like they were giving them away.

Okay I was rewatching Newsies and I noticed in the scene where Snyder visits the lodging house, you can see Kloppman keeps old little photographs on his desk and around his office area. It’s so cute. Now I wonder if they’re his family or pictures of some of the lodgers. It gave me all the feels.

I’ve given a lot of thought to what would happen when Jack and the other borough leaders age out of being newsies, because I’m confident that Jack nor Spot would go very far from the boys despite what it seems like.
I feel like they’d stick around for a while, making sure the new leaders new what they were doing, but they’d never really leave.
Even if the kids they had known had by now all aged up and out of selling, I don’t think they could stay to far. They wouldn’t be as involved, but they’d still be nearby.
Because of this, I began to think about what they’d do to protect the boys then it hit me.
Mr. Kloppman.
He takes care of those boys so much while still being a responsible voice of reason. He turns a blind eye to some of their mischief, like when Snyder came looking for Jack, because he understands.
I love the idea that for one reason or another Kloppman decided to come back and help out boys who were just like him as a child. To give them support he didn’t have as a boy and hopefully ease their situation even by a little.
I like to think that even with his lectures and stern looks he still cares so much for the boys and does his best to insure they’re healthy from a distance.
I’m not sure if this is like a common thought or whatever but I really like it.

So I watched Newsies again three nights ago with my mom and I noticed Weisel/Weasel leaving with the Delancey brothers at the end of the movie. I also noticed another man in his place. Was Weasel replaced?
Hi friend!
Yes Weasel is replaced at the end by an unnamed older man. My thought is that he lost his job when the strike ended, probably because Pulitzer partially relied on him to smother the strike, which he wasn’t able to do.
When I was younger and first saw Newsies I actually thought Kloppman replaced him and was doing both jobs 😂
It took years for me to realize it wasn’t Kloppman at the end haha!

sometimes I think about how typically newsies had to pay 6 cents for a night at the Lodging House so that means during the strike since literally NONE of the newsies were being payed Kloppman was letting them stay for free

Could you,,maybe,,write a scene from your deaf! Race au please? Maybe when his and Jack’s parents die? Or when him and Jack are stuck with Snyder?
Of course I can!
TW: minor character deaths, comatose character
Race was shaking. He couldn’t stop crying and no one would write anything down for him. He didn’t know how long he’d been here. But the nurses were running around this room and then leaving and Race was left staring at his big brother who hadn’t opened his eyes in far too long. Race pushed at his shoulder, trying to wake him up. He hit the older boy’s chest, desperate for someone to explain to him what was going on.
He hit the older boy one more time, unaware that he was whimpering and screaming, wailing and disrupting the entire floor. It wasn’t until someone swooping down in front of him, between him and his brother that Race began to heave for air. He curled up in his chair and continued crying as an old man looked him right in the eyes and began to sign with him. “It’s okay, it’s okay,” the man explained. “My name is Todd Kloppman.” He gently showed the child his name sign.
The boy whimpered and he began signing faster than he ever had before. He was hyperventilating as the man, Kloppman, gently began to sign to him. “Jack’s okay,” he assured. “He’s really sleepy, he’s just resting.” Race peaked around to look at Jack again. His big brother had a lot of purple and brown and blue all over him. Kloppman just kept signing. “He’s going to be alright.”
With a small sniffle, Race looked up at the man and, with shaky hands, signed slowly, “Mom? Dad?” he asked, not understanding why his parents weren’t here. Mom had a lot of blood all over her and they hadn’t been trying to get her out. He wanted to know where she was so that she could hold him or make Jack’s feel better.
The old man sighed. He lifted up his hands. “Mom and Dad are angels now,” he explained gently. “They love you so much, but they had to go up to heaven now—“
“Tell them to come back!” Race insisted, throwing his hands in Kloppman’s face. He stood up on the chair. “I want mommy! Tell her to come here!”
Kloppman stood in front of Race and gently scooped him up, hugging him tightly as the six year old had to process information he’d never had to come to terms with before. After a small struggle, the boy melted into Kloppman’s embrace, sobbing and allowing himself to understand that his parents weren’t coming back to him. The old man rocked him and rubbed his back. The poor child had been here for three days. His parents had been gone for three days and no one bothered trying to explain that to this young child.
The boy must have been starving, in need of water or a bathroom. They said he hadn’t moved from this room in days. So Kloppman pulled away from him. “You’re alright,” he promised. “I’m gonna help you, okay? Let’s go get you cleaned up and get you something to eat, okay?”
Race peaked over Kloppman’s shoulder to look at Jack one more time before he nodded and allowed Kloppman to set him on the floor and take his hand, leading him out of the room. He looked up at the old man before wiping at his tears with the sleeves of his sweatshirt. He looked up as they walked through the halls and Race could see Kloppman’s mouth moving. He was talking to the nurses. It looked like he was mad, absolutely furious.
The nurses looked between him and Race and Race just glanced back at Jack’s room, hoping that his big brother wouldn’t choose to become an angel like his parents. He just wanted his brother.

TW: Death
---
There had only ever been two deaths in the Manhattan Lodge House.
13 years ago, a 12 year old boy named Rocky. A kid who'd been in the refuge for 8 years of his life and seemed to have contracted every virus he could've caught.
He went out quietly, passing away in his sleep and never waking up. An older girl, Nifty, was the one who found him and quickly informed Kloppman, who had him buried later that week in the patch of grass outside.
The second time was after the fight.
Everybody was sleeping soundly, aside from Race and Albert. Jack was nowhere to be found, so until further notice, they were now the ones in command throughout the house. They couldn't bring themselves to fall asleep in case something were to happen, so they were trying to keep themselves awake as long as possible.
They were simply lying there, Race tracing random patterns onto Albert's thighs with his thumb, while Albert smoked his cigar, trying to relax after such a rough day.
At around 01.36, Tommy Boy rushed over to their bunk, tears spilling down his face and panic in his eyes.
"Jesus Tommy, what's happening?" Albert asked, quickly showing himself to a sitting position. "You look like you saw a ghost."
"I think I did-" He stuttered out. "Splasher ain't waking up. We shook him, said his name, slapped him a few times but he still ain't wakin' up-"
Race swung himself off the bunk, Albert following suit and running to Splashers bunk, praying to whoever was up there that the situation wasn't as bad as they were thinking.
At the bunk, Buttons could be seen holding Splashers limp body in his arms, sobbing to himself.
"Buttons...is he-" Race began, before being cut off by Buttons slowly nodding his head.
"He's gone." Buttons whispered, wiping his cheeks as dry as he could get them. "My baby brother is gone."
A few more people were starting to wake up at the noise they were all making. JoJo had caught onto what had happened, and while his shake had come back, he was ushering some of the younger kids out of the room, making the situation easier for the ones in charge.
"C'mon Ike, outta bed." He whispered, Mike asleep on his back and Mush at his side. "Yeah, we's gonna go on a little midnight walk, aye?"
"Jo, yous are shakin'." Specs uttered, putting a hand on the other boys arm. "That ain't happened in a while, you sure you's are good?"
"I'm fine." JoJo replied, walking the kids out of the room. "Call for me when we can come back in."
Specs nodded, walking over to the group at the bed.
Albert had run downstairs to go and grab Kloppman, let him know about the situation on their hands, leaving Racer, Buttons, Tommy Boy, Specs, and poor Splish-Splash.
Tommy Boy was holding onto Buttons, who was now sobbing into his shoulder. Racer had Splashers body covered with a bedsheet, a few specs of blood from his injuries seeping through.
"Christ." Race sighed, unable to break his watch on the body. "Kids only what, eight? Still had everythin' ahead of him."
Soon enough, word had spread to everybody in the room about the death, Kloppman running in with Albert beside him, confirming the fact for everyone.
That night, Splasher stayed lying on that bed with the sheet remaining atop of him.
The next morning, Finch and Henry were sent outside to dig another spot in the ground where they'd lay Splasher just a few hours later.
Much like with Rocky, it was only some of the older Newsies who went out to witness the burial.
Tommy Boy and Buttons were crying again. They'd just lost their little brother, the kid they'd practically raised throughout their childhoods. Now he was gone, just like that, all because of that stupid rally. Kind words had been said, but that doesn't bring back the most important person in their lives.
Race and Albert were dead silent, practically unable to speak from shock and fear. How had Jack done this for so long without cracking? It was their first day, and a kid had just died. They'd been told that it wasn't their fault by Kloppman numerous times, but it just couldn't sit right with them that a child died under their supervision.
JoJo was leading a small prayer service. He hadn't stopped shaking, making a short note to himself to tell the nuns how long this one seemed to be going on for. He'd been in charge of keeping the little kids occupied and distracted, but he knew deep down that there was only so long he could hide the death of one of the loudest kids in the house. He was just praying the day wouldn't be sooner but much later.
For multiple years after, they would look out the window and see the graves of Splasher and Rocky, remembering two kids who ended up dying to fend for themselves and their families.
It wasn't about pennies from that moment onwards. It was about remembering the newsies lost selling to help their family and striking to help future generations.
