You've unlocked something within me with those last few bts asks and now I need to get it off my chest - sorry to add on your ask pile with a long rant like this. But honestly my God I've been silently angry at the "bts paved the way" mantra hammered into everyone by armies on twitter for SO long. The idea that bts were the first of everything, the most important, the grandest because they came loudly into western consciousness (and now look at that, completely lost their artistic identity to the West) is all sorts of fucked up to me, not to mention factually incorrect.
I've been outraged at this behaviour particularly since 2019 when Sunmi responded in an interview that it was BTS and not Wonder Girls that substantially cemented kpop in the US, in what was a CLEAR show of 2nd gen humility rather than a statement meant to fuel armies' questionable perceptions of who is worthy in the kpop industry. I remember the way she was treated afterwards, trending for the whole day, positively but simply as if she were a herald of BTS's importance, deferring to them, and not a 2nd gen senior who in her however many years of immensely succesful career has just learnt to share credit. In general, the fact that armies have taken the praise given by fellow kpop artists to BTS as words of absolute reverence (and deference) rather than what they are - respectful nods of acknowledgement by colleagues - is insane to me.
They have set them up as a kind of God in the industry, in their minds both as people and as artists, when I can name off the top of my head 15 other kpop acts with more integrity and artistic growth than bts has ever shown. It is also insane to me that a person will praise a 2nd gen group for what they've done on twitter and will immediately get jumped by armies hijacking that pride. There's a reason why BTS is so emphatically not warmly treated by variety shows domestically, they are rarely mentioned and when they are it seems purely lipservice. So in my eyes what armies are really proud of is BTS's worldwide appeal - the approval from the West, the feeling of "surpassing" and no longer needing their Korean-ness for success - and that makes my blood boil. Hopefully now that they're on their separate ways for a while they will touch some grass and get better.
there there anon just let it all out (pats back gently)
yes it is uniquely frustrating. that's why i said i was curious to see if any of them branch out to do variety, because i'm not sure how that will go. i'm sure it would be fine since variety culture has changed in the last five or so years but the k entertainment industry is so intertwined and it's really weird that the biggest kpop group in the world just....doesn't participate in it. for better or for worse it is a community and part of being in a community is like. showing up and participating? like they only just came back to music shows now there's audience back and i'm pretty sure they aren't even filming in the same studios as the rest of the groups? i doubt they would be anything other than well received if they did decide to go back to broadcast variety shows but yea. it's weird that they eschew one of the aspects of kpop that is extremely specifically unique to korea.

My Journey of Never Give Up
Tumblr media
I was born on 27th July 1989 with Cerebral Palsy disease; a neurological disorder which affected my right side of body including speech. I had experienced verbal bully and child abuse (of every kind). I attempted suicide many times. My first suicide attempt was in 5th grade of primary school. I hurt myself many times. I didnt accept the way i was born.In 2009, I had a motorbike accident  due to which i am facing consequences till now. After one month, I had my first epilepsy attack in home. I fainted for almost 30 minutes. Later, It was diagnosed that i have epilepsy disease by my family psychiatrist. I started my treatment. In 2010, I discovered Kpop during my treatment process which changed my whole life. I started smiling again. It changed my perception about myself and my diseases. I accepted my myself the way i am. In just two years, I left all medication. I got free of epilepsy.
In 2012, I got recognition for my promotional documentary from Korean rookie artist “JJUN” and Korean news portal like Herald and Naver. I was the first Pakistani fan whom received  signed poster and albums from singer himself. Unfortunately, he is not active these days.It seems he left music.
Tumblr media
In 2014, I went into depression after my university graduation. In 18th of December i undergone into abdomen surgery which is still a nightmare to me. My struggle with depression continued after my surgery too. I started working to get busy myself. I spent most of time watching Korean dramas and movies. If I wasn't a hallyu fan i would have died at that time.

                                                 After Surgery
In 2016, my life took a new turn when i won the preliminary round of KBS Quiz on Korea 2016 and went to sponsored South Korea trip to represent Pakistan in final round. The 7 days were the happiest day of my life and still it is. I met myself there. I interacted with participants from different countries and explored their cultures. I met my Korean friends for the first time. I attended KBS Music Bank. I met Monsta X, Lee Hwi Jae and Sistar’s Bora.

                                      I am with Monsta X

I am with Lee Hwi Jae (famous Korean MC)
After returning back from Korea, i felt i was thrown into cage again. My brother left home to marry his girlfriend. I ended up in hospital. I was suffering from panic disorders and epilepsy again.(after 5 years). I faced domestic violence when my brother left home.It wont be wrong to say that 2017 and 2018 were worst years of my domestic violence. Due to this, I tried three times to go back Korea for studies but failed.  In 2018, my mental health started deteriorating day by day. I committed suicides by taking sleeping spills. I deleted my previous Facebook page of over 1k followers. I deleted all my previous YouTube videos too. Then i decided to go somewhere else to safe myself. I applied in Malaysian University, Limkoking University of Creative Technology. and got admission there. Now my mental health is stable though sometimes i get stress out but i know how to take out myself from it. I am studying the course which i was passionate about so many years. That is Master in Digital Film and TV.In Malaysia, I am free to live my life without any fears. Chinese and Malaysians are very friendly and cooperative with me. I am sure I will go back to Korea one day and get chance to work with Korean filmmakers. Fighting
^_^
[UPDATE] I took the challenge by directing hearing-impaired boy in my debut film "Love Yourself". The inspiration of this film came from my personal experience in life working with hearing-impaired students. I have written the script and produced my film as well. It got selected in UK based film festival "First Time Filmmaker Session 2019" organized by Lift-Off Global Network. It gives the platform to independent film-makers to showcase their films at Pinewood Studios, Raleigh Studios, Hollywood. I got into Top 5 with public voting on online screening at Vimeo, out of 100 short films in my category. I won the free Intermediate Membership with Lift-Off Global Network for one year. With this achievement, I would like to break the glass ceiling attach with physically challenged people in Film industry. I would like to be a source of inspiration for the unheard people. It was not that easy task for me when I initiated this project. I started this project with the strong self determination and aim to fulfill my career goals in life.

[MV] Dalshabet(달샤벳) _ B.B.BI(비비비)(Big Baby Baby)
5 years ago January 8,2014 Dal Shabet released Big Baby Baby! A darker more mature concept and comeback for the group. Herald as one of the best Kpop conecpts Video & Song to this day. The song was written and produced by Shinsadong Tiger. The group began televised promotions of their album (by the same name) on January 9, 2014 by appearing on MNET’S M! Countdown. The album reached #7 on the Korean Charts and sold over 5,000 copies. The single reached #15 on the Korean Hot 100 chart and the Gaon Music Chart and sold 349,825 copies just in digital downloads.
Natutally I was on Youtube and I was just watching what I always watched and I saw some Kpop videos in my recommendations. I started out with 9 Muses’s Glue which I loved. I saw the thumbnail above and thought “Oh that’s interesting” but went past it I watched other girl groups like rainbow and T-ara and Pristin. Kpop had me zombified. Then I made my way over to Dal Shabet. I was Gobsmacked! Never had I seen anything like it. As soon as I saw them do the formation in the beginning I was sold. The video was well shot and very thought out and got several beautiful looks in one video. I could tell no expense was spared. Gaeun’s rap verses is still one of the best executed. And Serri ! Don’t get me started. She’s a fucking star. When I found out she was the leader I wasn’t shocked. In most Kpop groups there’s just a sea of beautiful girls. But, in Dal Shabet Serri is always visible. Serri anchors Dal Shabet and leads them to victory. Even when Viki was the leader is still felt myself gravitating towards Serri. I found this video about November of 2017 and now its January 2019 and i’m just as in love with it!

K-pop fans emerge as a powerful force in US protests
Image copyright Getty Images
Image caption K-pop artists’ and fans’ support for the Black Lives Matter movement has attracted attention
Amid ongoing protests in America against racism and police brutality, a global legion of K-pop fans has emerged as an important ally for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.
Fans of South Korea’s popular music industry have raised funds for BLM and mobilised to overload social media hashtags used by its opponents, earning appreciation from protesters for their political activism.
Some may have been surprised by their impact, but K-pop observers note fans have long organised support for social and political causes as well as their favourite artists.
This support has, however, also raised questions about systemic racism in the industry and fandom, leading to calls for K-pop to address its own complicated relationship with race.
Fancams to the rescue
Following the outbreak of protests in the US, sparked by the death of black man George Floyd, the Dallas Police Department asked people to share videos of “illegal activity protests” through the iWatch Dallas app.
K-pop fans worldwide responded by inundating it with fan-recorded videos, known as fancams, and memes of various K-pop artists, in an effort to prevent police from tracking protesters’ actions.
Barely a day later, the app was reported to be experiencing technical difficulties though Dallas Police would not say if it was due to the fancams.
K-pop fans also spammed hashtags used to oppose BLM on social media, such as #AllLivesMatter, #BlueLivesMatter and #WhiteLivesMatter.
Though this made such hashtags trend higher, it also made it harder for their original messages to be seen.
K-pop fans, who have previously been derided online and criticised for “fancam spam”, were celebrated as valued allies of the protestors.

Many K-pop artists voiced their support for the movement on Twitter and Instagram, and some donated to the cause.
When popular boy band BTS announced a $1m (£784,000) donation, fan group One In An Army (OIAA) organised its own fundraising drive and matched the amount in less than 24 hours.
History of political activism
To many outside K-pop fandom, this political activism and co-ordination was a surprise.
However, those who follow K-pop closely consider such fans’ organisation and impact perfectly natural.
Fans in South Korea and worldwide routinely run well-co-ordinated campaigns to promote their favourite artists and propel them to awards and charts success and greater visibility. These skills are now being applied to the BLM cause.
As Hyunsu Yim, a pop culture reporter for The Korea Herald, has noted in a Twitter thread, this is far from the first time K-pop fans have made a political or social impression.
He illustrated his point with previous examples of activism: donations to a London charity to fund over 35,000 meals; calls for safer roads in Bangladesh; and Chile’s government in 2019 blaming K-pop and other “international influences and media” for domestic protests.

i just think ~some people~ wouldn’t be so surprised by k-pop stans’ organisation and activism if they had actually recognised (predominantly) young women’s dedication to their interests as legitimate in the first place instead of accusing them of being bots or cheaters

K-pop and racism
But while many have praised K-pop fans for their involvement in the protests, some are highlighting the longstanding abuse and harassment of black fans, many of whom have left fandoms as a result.

I really do love the fancam activism, but it’s frustrating to see the widespread praise without a single mention of the pervasiveness of racism & doxxing towards black fans in kpop spaces happening this week (& always) by outlets. Editors need to assign stories not trends.

Hashtags like #BlackARMYSMatter and #BlackARMYSEquality trended on Twitter in 2018 after black members of the BTS ARMY complained of racism within the fandom. Fans of other artists have also complained of racism in their communities.

9) The story shouldn’t be “#Kpop fans currently care about social issues and are activists!” — it should be “Mostly white Kpop fans get to be the face of issues when they want to, and often ignore/harass/exclude fans of color from the conversation along with media coverage.”
— Miranda Larsen (@AcaOtaku) June 6, 2020

Observers also question why K-pop idols – many of whom have expressed support for the US protests – are often silent when it comes to discrimination in South Korea.
This may partly be to avoid a backlash from their more conservative fans.
Many female idols have been criticised for expressing feminist views, and many who speak up for LGBTQ rights abroad shy away from such issues at home.
Agencies may also exercise control over what the performers say.
After Denise Kim, a member of rookie girl group Secret Number, expressed her support for BLM on Instagram, her Instagram and SoundCloud accounts were deleted and her agency’s Instagram account deleted its latest photo of her.
Fans criticised Kim’s agency and are now increasingly voicing their outrage about such censorship, as well as calling out idols for hypocrisy.
When Amber Liu, a member of girl group f(x), called for George Floyd’s killer to be charged with first-degree murder, some pointed out that in 2019 she said that a black man – seen being harassed and arrested in a viral video – “deserved it”.
For K-pop, a multi-genre industry heavily influenced by black culture and music, the Black Lives Matter movement has highlighted the need for artists and fans to do some soul-searching.
But as these protests have shown, their impact on society cannot be underestimated. When harnessed for a cause, K-pop has the potential to make a difference.

Opinion: Respect the Fangirl
The internet was buckwild last week as Halloween, the beginnings of Mercury Retrograde and the fall officially hit. Between My Chemical Romance coming back, more impeachment inquiries and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announcing Twitter would no longer be promoting political ads, there were plenty of trending topics to be paying attention to.
However, one trending topic stood out amongst the rest. At roughly 3 AM PST, international Kpop boy band Monsta X’s Wohno announced an extremely shocking and swift departure. The details of the departure are due to a series of alleged scandals that you can find research into outside of this article.
For us, it’s what happened after that counts. Monsta X’s fanbase, dubbed “Monbebe” -- a combination of Monsta X’s name and “baby”-- immediately sprung into action. Trending topics were made, a petition for his return came, other large Kpop fandoms like BTS’ Army, iKON’s iKonics, NCT’s NCTzens, Got7’s Aghases, Exo’s EXO-L, BlackPink’s Blink, Twice’s Once and many more banded together to support not just Wohno but their fellow Kpop fans who felt the lose reminiscent of that fateful day in March 2015 when Zayn Malik announced his untimely departure from One Direction.
Within 15 hours, the petition had almost 300k signatures, Monobes had two different hashtags trend worldwide with over 1 million tweets each, and, as this is being written, it looks as though they have no signs of stopping. At time of publication, Monbebes have effectively run through a new hashtag every twelve hours to remain on the Top Trending Worldwide Count, and they continued to protest in South Korea outside Starship Entertainment, with some international fans flying in to join their Korean sisters.
Over the years, fandoms online have become increasingly engaged within their communities. They have become politically and socially engaged, they have grown to understand and ask for accountability from their “problematic faves” and have begun to have the fledgling conversations of nuance for what is a “cancellable” offense and what or whom can be redeemed. There’s a movement amongst fandoms on the internet, and it aligns with a lot of the movements we are seeing of the youth in 2019. “We’re here, we know what we want, and we’re not going anywhere.”
To break down the phenom that can create such dedication and a riot online, we need to go back to the pre-internet music industry days. To days of John Lennon and Paul McCartney and the days the Beatles first touched down on U.S. soil. While we often herald The Beatles as the greatest group of all time -- rightfully so -- the context of who put them there is glossed over in conversations of their technical contributions to music.
In every Beatles documentary you watch, there’s always a slew of camera clips of them running from young female fans, of fans jumping on their getaway cars, crowding the airports, passing out just looking at them. The fans’ arms are full of albums, they’re crying over how much the music means to them, and they’re forming friendships, relationships and bonds over music that set the tone for the first intense wave of fandom success. And while the Beatles’ male fanbase wasn’t lacking, it’s not hard to see who put them on the charts, and who kept them coming back.
Young women’s influence on music has often been thrown aside as a “fangirl mentality.” Where women like music for two reasons: the first being they have more interest in the members than they do the music, and the second being that the music can’t be that good if it’s only young women listening to it. As we strive to break fangirl stereotypes, we see the efforts of these fandoms that have created some of the biggest artists in the world ignored.
Most obvious in this ignorance was a recent Pitchfork article accrediting Kanye West with the success of musicians going viral on Twitter. This claim ignored the early days of Bieber fans -- you know, before Justin tried to start his own social app (RIP Shots) --, Swifties -- who largely began their crusade online after the infamous incident--, Directioners -- arguably the first fanbase to truly use Twitter to its fullest extent--, and more. The cultural and social significance of the fangirl doesn’t even have proper documentation. There is so little academic study into the passion of young women and how they form the grassroots of and self-market artists, who go on to have the kind of cultural impact to swing elections. It’s disappointing.
Even more recently, The Hollywood Reporter released an interview with Kpop mold-breaking sensation BTS that was nothing short of disappointing for long-term fans and a band who sold out the Rose Bowl twice in minutes. The lack of awareness from one of the biggest entertainment editorial structures in the U.S. speaks volumes about just how irrelevant cis-white-male-centric-run publications claim young women to be. When the writer Seth Ambrovitch was critiqued by both fans and journalists alike for his poor misuse of precious time with some of the most sought after musicians in the world, he claimed he was doing them a favor, that 99.99% of the population didn’t know who BTS is yet, and that he was bringing BTS to the attention of the general public. Nevermind the sold-out U.S. stadium tour - One Direction, Beyonce nor Taylor Swift sold out the Rose Bowl - or the fact that since BTS’ breakout moment and their hard work to help credit the validity of the Kpop industry in the west has allowed multiple other bands like Monsta X, NCT 127, Super M and more receive well-deserved credibility here. Seth just didn’t seem to care. Because 99.99% of his immediate population didn’t know BTS, he didn’t bother to do his research and realize that young women -- fangirls -- around the world have risen BTS to an international household name, one that you would have to live under a very specific bubble to ignore.
So what makes a fangirl? The definition is broad, but it’s mostly applied to young people -- mostly young women/nonbinary individuals who are incredibly passionate about musicians they listen to. It’s a term that’s been weaponized, attempted to be recaptured, and forced on a lot of people who make that delicate transition from female fan to female music industry professional.
In 2015, Zayn Malik left One Direction, and the internet had a field day. Directioners were one of the first massive young female fanbases to overtake Twitter, constantly winning 1D fan-voted awards, pushing every single thing the band did, and creating fan accounts that accumulated mass amounts of followers in short amounts of time. And yet, on the day Zayn Malik left, and Directioners were grieving on a platform they largely helped grow, they were mocked, meme’d and, again, not taken seriously. But it was hard on these young women. They invested, they voted, they fought for the legitimacy of One Direction. They bought tickets to tour dates all over the world, they cried to their music, had their first kisses, first drinks, graduations, first loves, friendships, break-ups and lives soundtracked by five boys from the U.K.
The internet allowed them to connect across the world with people they would have never otherwise known. It created a safe-haven online for people to discuss the real problems teen girls face, open their eyes to the issues of other young women around the world, and it took a lot of them to different countries they would have never seen. When 1D, the Jonas Brothers, Bieber and many other male-centric fandoms were suffering from a unique drought, the Beyhive, Swifties, Selenators and Arianators were there to offer community. Where you were a fangirl once, even with a broken heart, you could find love again.
Two years before 1D broke up across the world, Kpop band BTS debuted under the small company Big Hit Entertainment. As is standard with Kpop bands, they were promoted around Korea, did various variety shows, performances, etc. But BTS also did something different: they began to utilize western social media more interactively with their base. With the decline of One Direction and no main boy band in sight, there was a missing stage from the U.S. Market, and it didn’t take long before BTS was rightfully filling that role. With their first world tour taking place in 2015, the hype quickly began to build with their social media presence and fan interaction.
Rightfully dubbed ARMY, BTS’ fanbase weaponized the internet in a Swiftie/Beyhive-like takeover, and before you knew it, not a single tweet could be found without a Kpop fancam under it. BTS grew exponentially and routinely received millions of likes on single posts on Twitter, making them one of the most interacted with Twitter accounts on the platform.
Fast-forward to 2019, where Harry Styles is accrediting his success largely to his female fanbase, BTS sold out two nights at the Rose Bowl in minutes, Taylor Swift is being honored as Artist of the Decade at the AMA’s and Selena Gomez took two days to garner enough streams to debut on the Billboard Charts. It’s evident and clear that as long as social media is a prevalent part of music, the fangirls yield power. As they learn these lessons about nuance, start banding together more often as fanbases, and demanding accountability, there’s truly no telling what young women are capable of in this industry.
At time of press, Harry Styles announced his new album Fine Line will be released on December 13th, and the internet and young women he’s so long accredited with being the key to his success responded in kind. Four of the top worldwide trends are currently about Harry Styles, Monsta X and BTS, with multiple tweets crossing fandoms, once again reminding us of the significant power that stan twitter and its fangirls have.
As far as we go, we’re investing in them in the long-haul. We’re watching them teach themselves how to video edit, use photoshop, optimize analytics, control trends, outsmart algorithms and even create movements within themselves. We’re hoping to help all those brilliant young women who have found a home in a smooth melody and an intense emotional connection to find career paths in the things that make them passionate and happy.
And while we are on the side of the Monbebe’s, and we hope Wohno returns to Monsta X happy and healthy, we are proud of these young fans for standing up for what they believe is right, supporting one another, having honest conversations about accountability, but mostly inspiring change. We’re hoping to see more fanbases coming together as human rights violations take a world stage in the upcoming 2020 U.S. elections. We’re hoping to see the power these young women hold continue to transfer into the parts of their lives that have been fighting for equality and justice.
All in all, it’s time we #RespectTheFangirl, and we’d love to hear your favorite fangirl stories.

Kangin wrote that he had planned to let go of the name of the boy-band, Super Junior. A name which was a part of his life for a very long time. He explained to the masses that this decision is no sudden, spur of moment one.
For a long period of time, the feeling that he should apologize to his fellow-companions percolated his brain. He knew that this decision is inevitable, however, did not trust himself enough to act it out. Having failed to garner enough courage for the act, he just stayed silent.
