NINE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO GET TO KNOW BETTER ♡
I was tagged by@unsettlingcreature
and in return I am tagging: @marke-the-silverlion (bc why not) @eyezehuhh @theonyxranger @echoshour @adrianspoison @samfparker @twilitzelda
favorite color. green! i love growing things. fighting for the top spot for years was purple and yellow, but these days i think orange is steadily rising.
last song. Butchered Tongue by Hozier. I'm listening to music right now but paused to focus bc the song was. making me too sad and feelings-heavy to write this out
last movie. oh man. I've been to a ton this year but haven't watched as many at home as I wanted... I think it was Barbie. Missed The Last Voyage of the Demeter bc I was too busy w wedding planning but I wanted to go see that
currently watching. I'm doing the hard work of catching up on Dr. Who... I wanna watch Ncuti Gatwa when he's the doc but I stopped watching back in series 8 bc i was burnt out on the Moffat of it all... Now I gotta get thru a lot of Moffat. Nearly caught up tho!
currently reading. Bad Feminist by Roxanne Gay, Seahorses as Pets by Edward Eldington and also RoTK by Tolkien. There's many of them bc I will read a bit and then leave and do literally everything else under the sun, go "I should read!", pick out a new thing, read a bit, go "Oh I need to read the other one too!" read a bit of that. Repeat... hell cycle.
current obsession. man I was really obsessed with writing OCs for a bit. Then became obsessed with Skyrim again. Then modding Skyrim helped me discover a power supply fault in my computer so I can no longer safely play modded Skyrim. So I keep having Skyrim dreams (literally) but I will not play unmodded anymore... So I suffer. Guess that means I'm in between fixations?
sweet, savory, or spicy? Savory!! Salt good!! It also stops me from fainting and being dizzy all the time, but I've always liked it even before I became Afflicted with the Condition.
currently working on. I am midway through a lot of things. I'm beginning to think I'm approaching everything like the reading. I have "The Heart Beats Again" I have four other projects of varying sizes and I am thinking of maybe doing kinktober so. I am busy and bouncing around

Entry 117
37th Mid Summer
Today Krogan and I had a day off, one that while Johann seemed to oppose it, he and I both managed to sway his mind on the matter. It's the first break I've had since my coming here, and while there could've been better days to have this moment of rest, I am glad, in some ways, that it was today.
Mostly because today gave me a chance to think.
As we both left Johann's workspace, Krogan asked me about how the Dragon Eye was working, likely trying to pry out exactly what had happened a few days prior when it crunched in his hands and I… well, took it to examine the damage. I told him my findings; That it was old boar grease that had severely hardened inside the mechanism during its stay in the volcano. Where the boar grease came from, I have my suspicions, but in any matter I found myself beginning to rant. Justifiably so.
He didn't say much of anything, looking back. He watched me as I explained the cause, how it explained how the Dragon Eye upon recovery had been… fussy, how I'd taken it apart to clean it and found far more of the hardened residue than should even be possible and,  eventually, he listened through my opinion on its condition and how it had been unjustly treated by Hiccup and his meddling-
I digress.
At the time, I had simply talked, and he'd simply paced alongside of me, sometimes he'd say something and I'd continue on, but now that I think of it, this… behavior… there have been other times that I've talked and he's listened, for whatever reason it was. I honestly don't think he knows what I'm talking about most of the time, but in any case, he always listens with this amused smirk. Sometimes he'll surprise me with a comment of his own, which still catches me off guard when he listens that well to my ramblings.
It's… nice, actually… that he listens…
And that set me thinking…
Why?
Why does he listen?
If it were simple amusement, he wouldn't have to say a word, much less take from the conversation and add to it. Could he be listening just to learn? Is he trying to subtly pry information about myself for later? Lately he doesn't seem malicious, which is a turn I could've never expected. We were at eachother's throats not two months ago, yet now he listens? Is there any reason to this change that perhaps I've not considered?
I don't exactly know. In some ways, I'm almost terrified to consider other options. A man like him… I don't dare say the word 'friend'... not yet, though a part of me wishes it so, that my distrust just may be my old habits dragging me down.
I've thought about this, and the more I do, the more I realise…
It might be something more...

i think the one thing that kind of holds it back is that a lot of the alien fashion is constructed around making sense as ‘human but different’ to our eyes. like having collars, sleeves, etc. like maybe salarians would have draping fabrics and not see a need for collars ??.. dgmw i dont mind what we have i like the little outer space shirts

in love with the idea of viggo staying at some sort of inn during that three month period between S4-S5 and during that stay he accidentally runs into hiccup and astrid who are staying there for a night and don't know he's there. he doesn't actually see them when he exits his room because of his decreased f.o.v, so when astrid reflexivly yeets an axe at his head he doesn't see it coming until it's flying past his face and implanting itself in the wall next to him. consequently the two riders get to see viggo completely and utterly terrified for the first time in their lives before he semi-composes himself to look only mildly startled. he looks over and sees them, flinches a little, and the first words to exit his mouth are:
"Oh, etiquette, Astrid, we're in an inn for Thor's sake!"
and hiccup, who is currently holding back a very angry astrid, replies:
"You just spooked her!"
to which an absolutely dumbfounded viggo replies:
"I SPOOKED HER?!"

Humans lack sharp teeth, but they're vicious little things. Scrappy. They'll fight dirty, they'll turn your own weapons on you, and most important of all: they won't hesitate to rip your throat out.
Humans are soft, squishy, scuttling little things. Like bugs. Find one and you'll find a hundred more. But don't mistake their lack of natural armour as weakness - they bounce back, and they'll figure out a way to hit you twice as hard and really ruin your day.
Humans are a young race, short-lived, inexperienced. Children, in truth, when compared to us. But for all that they're still lagging, they're growing, and their physiology is surprisingly elastic - find a threat to the galaxy and place a bet the humans will survive. Provided you do, too, you'll be set for life.
Humans are sturdy and surefooted on their homeworld as we once were, and seal themselves into suits when confronted with hazardous environments as we do now. But where we exercise care and caution, humans thrive in chaos and challenge. They are made to survive, it's in their very bones.
And humans... are also terrifying. What should kill them... can sometimes alter them. From humans stem vampires, and that undeath can cross the species barrier. Turn your gaze to Commander Shepard and his crew, and see the evidence for yourself.

Me, after trying to import his face and it looking awful so I look up how to get appearances to work in the creation kit:

Guys, I'm sobbing!
I just did Attican Traverse: The Rachni and my heart nearly broke.
I saved the Rachni Queen once again and as we were leaving, when Grunt said he'd hold them off I legit went "Did I mess up?! Is Grunt going to die?!" I started sobbing on the spot!
Then when he came out bloodied and asked "Anyone have something to eat?" my sobbing turned to happy tears.
My heart couldn't take it if I lost one of my squad members 😭🤧

My vote is for Tali, partially because Liara reminds me that we can't romance Aria and it makes me sad. But mostly because Tali is a qt <3
I just recruited Liara and while I currently like Tali more, Liara's got some slight echoes of Nico Robin in there; not much in common besides being gorgeous women (or like...OK, Asari have no gender but you get what I mean) archeologists, but still it's the first thing that came to mind. Liara seems much more idealistic though, which I like. Robin's queen of my heart and takes precedence over every other One Piece qt in my life, so anyone even faintly resembling her makes me go 👀
Also is it true that Quarians just look like glowie humans under the helmet, because if true that's such bullshit lol. I love Tali no matter how generic of an alien she may look like under the suit, but still.

Fantasy races are an uncomfortable concept, because they present a world that literally works the way racists think that it works. The attempts to mitigate this problem often fail to address the core concern, merely making the idea more palatable.
A big example is trying to correct by changing the language from "races" to "species." This attempt fails for two reasons:
1) Exactly! Racists think that people of other races are a different species. That's the foundation of "race science," phrenology, all of it.
2) Are demihumans different species, though? Like, the interactions between elves and dwarves don't resemble the interactions between different species in our world. They don't act like snakes and lemurs, or whales and krill, or even cats and dogs. More often we've got different groups of people, who may speak different languages and have different cultural practices, engaging in diplomacy or war and struggling to coexist. In practice, they are treated as nations: ethnicities. Except they're ethnicities who are biologically distinct enough to have objective differences in ability.
This is something that puts me on edge in Mass Effect, otherwise one of my favorite games. True, the game ultimately lands on condemning the genophage, and it's not subtle about that. I mean just look at the name... But it's still considered debatable, morally grey, and Mordin Solus remains one of the most charming and enduring heroes of the series. The setting has bent over backwards to make every racist stereotype and talking point as legitimate as possible. In this setting, it is objectively true, scientifically proven that it is in the DNA of Krogans to naturally be violent, warmongering killing machines whose explosively rapid breeding poses an existential threat to the galaxy. That in turn is meant to make us think that maybe forced sterilization is something worth considering. It's hard to ignore the parallels to real life racist propaganda. I don't think it's malicious, just ungrounded and thoughtless; the result of creators to whom these ideals are abstract thought experiments, rather than reflections of real history.
Another big example is Dark Elves. They try to make it okay, to mitigate the message by fleshing them out as characters, by scapegoating an abusive deity rather than an ingrained nature, by erasing the monster manual description that reads "Always Chaotic Evil," by trending skin tone away from black and towards purple, or gray, even pale white. But none of it really changes the core issue, does it? The idea of drow is to equate dark skin with evil, to fetishize that idea, and to tell a story about a subsect of people cast into darkness as a result of sin in a direct parallel to racist Christian beliefs about dark skin being a curse or punishment from God.
So, do I think we need to cancel Mass Effect and stop playing D&D or telling stories about drow? No, not really. I mean... I do all these things. Truth is, I don't have an actionable solution, for myself or anyone. But the dynamic is clearly present and worth describing. And the attempts to challenge it are often insufficient, more about making ourselves feel better about what we're already doing than enacting real change.

I now absolutely get Pat’s comment about ME3 feeling like 3 entirely different plots shoving each other aside for screen time. Dream kid is just the most blank-faced, emotion-less waste of time. I look forward to doing my PC run with the mod that just deletes him lol. And I’m not even at the cringiest part of the Cerberus plot line that I know about, but it’s felt awkward and pointless the whole time. Oh my god! Cerberus is evil for real now!! WHO COULD HAVE FORESEEN THIS?! Thank god the good parts has been the main meat of the priority missions so far otherwise I’d be sleepwalking thru a lot of this!
Tho I will say I appreciate that even side missions get to be WAYYY more relevant to the main plot/your squad, bc that always bothered me before. (Tho, tbh it makes the Cerberus nonsense even more obvious bc if you do one of those, nothing really happens, everyone just yells GDI CERBERUS, and that’s it. The end.)
I just finished Tuchanka, and I loved how it felt like a whole arc of the game (and the series tbh) had built up to a satisfying conclusion. Imagine that! In the game infamous for how horrible it’s end is!! It does make the Normandy seem empty now, tho :((( god now I know why the citadel dlc was so necessary lol, I got to see a bunch of my friends and now I just want them all back without all the unfathomable despair 😔
