The Red Circle
Published in 1911 as a two-parter, this is the penultimate story we'll be covering His Last Bow, leaving just the titular story there.
This does sound rather like "The Veiled Lodger", doesn't it?
These days, you'd have to check the immigration status of your tenants. In 1902, really not an issue. Although anti-immigrant sentiment was definitely there and growing.
Those strange coded personal messages - some even encrypted - very much existed in newspapers back then. Once radio had become a thing, the British would use them on radio broadcasts to Occupied Europe in the Second World to get messages to the resistance movements. Including the "get ready" and "go" codes for the mass sabotage operations that preceded Operation Overlord in 1944.
"Timekeepers" were used for recording arrivals and departures at a site, including that of staff for the purposes of paying wages, determining lateness etc.
Great Orme Street is more properly called Great Ormond Street, located in Bloomsbury. It is best known for the world-famous children's hospital called Great Ormond Street Hospital. They have a permanent UK copyright to Peter Pan which gives them a right to royalties for publications, adaptations, performances etc. The US copyright on the original version expires next year. If anyone wants to do a LfW retelling of the original book, it would be nice to contact them and arrange a donation. They're a very good organisation.
"Art for Art’s sake" was a French slogan from the latter half of the 19th century. You may know its Latin version - ars gratia artis - as the motto of film studio MGM.
The light flashing message gets a whole chapter covering it in Klinger's annotated version, as it's been heavily discussed by scholars. Basically, it would take multiple minutes to send that message.
The Pinkerton detective agency did a lot of investigative work in its early days, both criminal investigation and more nefarious stuff to aid strike-breaking. The latter got the US government banned from hiring them as such in the 1893 Anti-Pinkerton Act. They are still involved in anti-union stuff today.
Much of Notting Hill had become increasingly slum-like by this time as an influx of people led to houses built for one family being split to hold far more; the idea when the area was built was for the middle classes to live there, but they didn't buy the properties. It later attract large numbers of Afro-Caribbean immigrants in the post-war era, partly as the notorious slum landlord Peter Rachman was prepared to rent to them while others weren't. This growing ethnic tension culiminated race riots in 1958, with white "Teddy Boys" attacking West Indian homes. Since then, the slums have been cleared and the area has gentrified quite a bit.
It is also home to the annual Notting Hall carnival every August since 1965 (bar 2020 and 2021), which around 2 million people attend. The Metropolitan Police have moved from active hostility to active cooperation in its running and there will be photos of officers dancing with those in the parade at any given carnival. The reputation for violence is unjustified and arguably fuelled by racism - while there were frequently arrests for violence, drugs and weapons offences, on a pro-rata basis, the arrest rate is about the same as the Glastonbury Festival.
The Carbonari ("charcoal makers") were secret revolutionary societies active in what would become Italy in the early 19th century. After failed uprisings in 1831, the various Italian governments cracked down hard on them and they were effectively eliminated. They were not really engaged in protection rackets.
Dynamite was patented by Alfred Nobel in 1867. Being a good deal more stable than nitrogyclerine - although storage is important as old dynamite is a good deal less stable - it became popular for terrorists and criminals, with a series of bombings by Irish republicans between 1881 and 1885 leading to the formation of Special Branch.
Covent Garden is home to the Royal Opera House.

KAMELOT And KOBRA AND THE LOTUS Singers Share Photos From Wedding Ceremony
KAMELOT singer Tommy Karevik and KOBRA AND THE LOTUS lead vocalist and songwriter Kobra Paige held a wedding ceremony this past June, more than two years after they were officially married.
Earlier today, Tommy took to his social media to share a few photos from the event, and he included the following message: "On June 25th this happened!! We got to celebrate being man and wife in the presence of close family and friends! It was amazing to get to welcome my mother, sister and the rest of my Swedish family to Canada for the very first time, but so many people travelled far to be there and we are beyond grateful for each and everyone of you. Huge thanks to Kobras mother Susan for all your hard work and planning 5000! Together with Lynn Fletcher Weddings - LFW Events Inc. you created the possibility for us to experience a truly perfect day and we could have never done it without you!"
Kobra, who was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada as Brittany Paige before officially changing her name, also took to social media to share pictures of the ceremony, and she wrote: "The wedding that finally happened! ! It was intimate and beautiful beyond our imagination. The most meaningful part of that beauty being the presence and love from our close family and friends. It was amazing to finally welcome Tommy's mom, sister, and family from Sweden for the first time. Many travelled from far to be here with us and we felt humbled and beyond grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you to my incredible mother Susan and our incredible wedding planner, Amy Miller @lynnfletcherweddings for their tireless and remarkable efforts in making this experience possible for us!!!"
Karevik and Paige officially tied the knot on April 4, 2020. The couple broke the news of their marriage a couple of weeks later during a joint Facebook Live chat. At the time Kobra said: "[Tommy is] stuck here in Canada [because of the coronavirus crisis], and the wedding was supposed to be in August. But because of everything going on, we had to move the wedding to next year. So we decided, because he's here and we're ready — there's nothing holding us back; it was just the prospect of having our families together that mattered the most. We luckily were able to gather everybody on Zoom. We had my brother in Toronto, my sister in Calgary, his family all across Stockholm and their homes, and my grandparents, of course, in Calgary. And we got married. We're with my parents right now here on the coast, so it was just us two… But it was very intimate."
Added Tommy: "It was beautiful. It was not what we had planned. Also, that's why it was so beautiful, because it was very raw, very honest and very unprepared and emotional. It was awesome."
Karevik and Paige got engaged in June 2019 when he popped the question in his former hometown of Stockholm, Sweden.
Tommy and the Kobra apparently met when KOBRA AND THE LOTUS supported KAMELOT on a European tour in 2015. Since then, Kobra has frequently appeared as a guest vocalist at KAMELOT shows.

The trickle effect
This is when a fashion trend begins at the highest point in the runways then would be seen on royalty, moving down to celebrities, then you start to see the trend branch out in its own ways within the general public showing at stores we can afford. The opposite to this is the trickle theory when it works its way up from the general public (street fashion) then being seen in different ways throughout celebrities and runways.
The nova check trend shows this effect as it began through Burberry's clothes in the runway including nova check then it trickled down towards the general public. Although, this is very good for brands who create these trends, for Burberry the nova check became a symbol of "hooliganism" throughout the general public and mostly football fans wearing the Burberry nova check scalf. But when Christopher Bailey became the head designer then he turned the Burberry name around and made it more high class but still keeping with the British nature.

The 40th-Anniversary London Fashion Week Is Looming – So What Can Attendees Expect?
Tumblr media
If there is at least one development that ought to brighten spirits among many a style aficionado amid the January greyness and drizzle, it is surely the looming return of London Fashion Week (LFW) – not least as this won’t be “just another” Fall/Winter instalment of the iconic trade show.
We are, of course, referring to the fact that the upcoming LFW will mark the event’s 40th anniversary when it takes place in the UK capital from 16th to 20th February.
While LFW’s status as one of the world’s “Big Four” fashion weeks – alongside New York, Milan, and Paris – might not have altered over the years, certain other things have. One of those is the hybrid format the show now takes, with physical and digital presentations set to be held in celebration of both well-established designers and emerging fashion talents.
Then, there is the news that fur won’t feature, the British Fashion Council (BFC) – which organises the show – having banned it from the schedule as a requirement of its 2024 application process. But what else is set to distinguish LFW40 as the way to get the UK capital’s fashion year underway in ’24?
‍Once again, a formidable showcase of creative talent awaits
In its announcement just before Christmas of the provisional schedule for this milestone LFW, the organisers promised that the Fall/Winter 2024 edition of the legendary trade show would “spotlight London’s unique creative communities and its position as a world-leading cultural capital.”
Sure enough, the evidence so far is that this will be emphatically the case. The week is set to commence with maximum impact courtesy of Edward Crutchley’s captivating creations, with Sinéad O’Dwyer and Chet Lo subsequently putting on their own showcases.
That is before one accounts for the comeback of Dunhill in the form of its first live runway since 2020, helmed by creative director Simon Holloway.
As the week progresses, the capital’s ever-sharp fashionistas will inevitably be keeping their eyes out for the latest inventions of a stellar complement of both menswear and womenswear designers. Expect all manner of pioneering, bold, and… unexpected looks alike from such principal players as Burberry, 16Arlington, David Koma, Dilara Findikoglu, Emma Wickstead, Simone Rocha, Fashion East, ERDEM, Richard Quinn, Molly Goddard, and many more.
While Somerset House at 180 The Strand will serve as LFW40’s main venue, various shows will also take place in other locations around the capital. And of course, attendance of the shows will be by invitation only, with the mere mortals of the general public still restricted to looking from afar. Well, that’s sort-of correct; this season will also see the return of the LFW City Wide Celebration, a programme of more broadly accessible events and activations coinciding with LFW.
‍What should be your next steps in readiness for LFW40?
The latest details about this year’s showcases can, of course, be found at LFW’s usual online home.
In the meantime, if you are aiming high with your fashion, luxury, or lifestyle brand in 2024 and would appreciate the knowhow and assistance of a strategic digital agency in London with a consistent track record of excellence, you are very welcome to reach out to the Skywire London team.

Fashion Seasons
Every year, there are four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn/Fall, and Winter. Because the seasons intertwine effortlessly, the fashion industry produces two collections yearly.
The Spring/Summer collections come first from September to November, and then we get Fall/Winter collections from February to April.
This is a simple case of planning ahead so that the public knows what designers foresee on the streets for the relevant season. An excellent shopping tip is to buy winter clothes in the summer and vice-versa. You end up with massive savings because stocks must go.
New York Fashion Week (NYFW)
New York fashion week comes first. The biggest shows in New York are usually Brandon Maxwell, Carolina Herrera, Laquan Smith, Michael Kors and Tory Burch, to name a few.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jasmine Tookes walks for LacQuan Smith and Gigi Hadid walks for Michael Kors.
London Fashion Week (LFW)
Next up is London fashion week. There are few shows in London, but huge brands tend to book international models quickly. Centre stage shows include Burberry, Erdem, Emilia Wickstead, Victoria Beckham and Vivienne Westwood.
Tumblr media
Vivienne Westwood's granddaughter walks in her fashion show posthumously.
Milan Fashion Week (MFW)
Now comes Milan fashion week. By this time, we are well and truly into the madness, and models are tired. The shows that attract the most attention include D&G, Dsquared2, Etro, Fendi, Prada and Philipp Plein.
Tumblr media
Dolce & Gabbana collection.
Paris Fashion Week (PFW)
Finally, we end with Paris fashion week. Everyone is tired by this point and ready to go home. But how can you when shows like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Acne Studios, Miu Miu, Balenciaga, Hermes, Christian Dior, Saint Laurent, Valentino & Balmain are on?
Tumblr media
A Christian Dior Tote Bag is seen in the 2020 collection.
Not to mention that a designer can move their show to a different destination. For example, in 2023, Versace showed their FW23 collection in Los Angeles instead of Milan.

The Special Story Behind Victoria Beckham’s Mother-Of-The-Groom Necklace
Victoria Beckham and David Beckham decided to repurpose a diamond, which David Beckham gave to Victoria on the day of Brooklyn Beckham’s christening, for the mother-of-the-groom to wear to Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding to Nicola Peltz.

Victoria Beckham recently announced a brand-new collection of lipsticks that is oozing nostalgia. Posh, named quite clearly after her nickname in the Spice Girls, features nine neutral lipsticks that are just as chic and posh as she is. Each of the new lipsticks by Victoria Beckham Beauty have been aptly dubbed names like "Pout," "Spice," and "Sway" to fit the fun and nostalgic theme and come in a variety of shades, ranging from copper brown to pale peach. All of the neutral tones were strategically selected to fit every skin tone and mood, and the only pop of color is the bright red shade named "Pop." Before they launched, I was able to get my hands on the full range of lipsticks ahead of time — and as far as I'm concerned, these are the only lipsticks I need for fall. They don't just look good, they also feel luxurious on lips thanks to the rosehip, avocado, and coconut oils that hydrate and a pomegranate jojoba blend to support barrier function. Ahead, I tried on all of the Posh by Victoria Beckham Beauty lipstick shades — keep reading to see which one is my favorite.
