re: the definitive cancellation. i hadn't been holding out too much hope because i didn't want to get devastated all over again, but man i think i really was expecting to be pleasantly surprised. everything else about this show has been so goddamn miraculous.

i'm just one guy in this fandom, and i don't have a particularly loud voice or anything, but i want to get it on record that this show really did have a profound effect on me. i was literally a different person pre march 2022.

ofmd's sheer earnest portrayal, love, and celebration of queer identity is groundbreaking. it's a good show. it displays an expectation of quality that's been getting harder and harder to find in the current media climate (when it comes to mainstream media, anyway).

this show and the discussion it has about queer identity, masculinity, societal expectations, had a hand in me getting closer to actualizing my own identity. it ignited in me a profound desire for more portrayals of genuine expression, and felt like a breath of fresh air in our irony-poisoned culture.

ofmd is funny. and it's loving. and it's honest. and it's obvious why it was able to form such a community around it.

it sucks that we won't get to see the proper end of it the way it was originally intended. it really sucks. but the show still exists and we all got to see it and i'm serious when i say appreciating that fact is going to be better than mourning what could have been at this point.

if i were ever to trust evidence of ghosts it would be on ghost files because theres just no way theyre staging it yeah yeah theres always the possibility its fake but deadass they gain very little from doing that. the majority of comments are about the guys fucking around and the insane deranged shit they both do, not discussions on the evp or video captures. the ghosts just give them something to bounce off of, they dont even need evidence to make a good episode. thats why id be willing to believe actually compelling evidence if its on ghost files, bc theres any honest people online it would be them

It's eternally a little funny whenever I see someone say something along the lines of 'everyone in Strive is so happy now! Everyone's stories are getting resolved! It'll be hard to make a new game when everyone's retired and living peacefully and resolved their problems' and then there's a haunted semi-sentient mecha corpse in the corner constantly screaming from being trapped in limbo

#nothing against the character reworking it's just funny in a fucked up way #everyone get a happy ending!* #*(except for you Romeo) #when I go back and rewatch Xrd vs Strive it's kinda jarring since you have a whole fleshed out character and now he's just kinda conceptual #like sure obviously he's dead but he himself is just sorta mentioned in passing by a couple of people #they didn't even go with the interpretation of 'oh his spirit passed on in AS/story mode' #and based on the character theme it really just reads as 'I'm trapped in neverending hell and my sister's presence is the only distraction' #half the cast is retiring and Romeo is reenacting I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream #idk I could be overthinking it but that whole segment of plotline bugs me in the weirdest way #wish it was more conclusive. wish it had more continuity from xrd. wish more than like two people in universe acknowledged it #how it's presented and how it's treated feels like it has a schism where things don't quite match up #bleh. at the very least there could have been a special intro with Axl #the ending of arcade mode is so abrupt it's almost a little silly #'ahh okay your brother's ghost/a lingering fragment of his soul is desperate to kill himself let's not touch on that much further' #maybe it'd be better if everyone had outtro dialogue like in xrd...? #guilty gear #bedman #delilah #op back on her bullshit

Please note that it's intentional that Sam is romanticizing death and has over-blown anti-human feelings. they're a depressed teenager! they're going through it and they're coping the only way they know how. They'll learn to grow more healthy world views and ways of dealing with their depression with time. Please don't assume I'm condoning their world-view lol.

Anyway on a lighter note, I wanted Sam and Tucker to look different than my usual AU stuff in this AU, so I hope you guys like the design change!

Updates will be infrequent as I'm pretty busy. However, I did this on a team call day so I was kind of productive in my other projects haha!

okay i just marathoned the entirety of ATLA live action & i might do an actual review of it explaining my thoughts more in depth, but the TLDR version basically boils down to this:

#i was trying to keep an open mind & all that cuz of OPLA (my beloved) but. holy shit it was actually worse than i expected :/ #like what were they thinking. did they use AI to write this or are the writers just like. really shitty #notes: they linger too much on random bullshit & refuse to move character development along #they tell when they should be showing & when they DO show it's for stuff that benefited from brief environmental storytelling in the OG #the plot drags so hard it was basically stagnant #there were some fun things but like. those things could've been funner if they'd been given the time other useless stuff was taking up #they changed so many minor details that really don't matter in order to make them more important #but this failed spectacularly because now there's just. stupid bullshit clogging up the plot?? #instead of having 10 minute monologues 3 times an episode about plot irrelevant things #they should have taken a page out of the original's book & kept minor details to a minimum & focused on ACTUAL PLOT #SO MUCH CGI. LIKE I KNOW THEY NEED IT BUT COME ON. EVEN THE CHARACTERS?????? WHO ARE JUST STANDING THERE???????? #they were given 8 hours & almost all of it was Aang angsting (lol) over being the avatar & not practicing actual bending #& then they ended the plot too early so they had to fill in the last like 20 minutes with something else #so they made up random lore that literally makes no sense. & overexplained all of it to the point i was blanking out from boredom #i think this is why i didn't enjoy Korra. they over explain the spirit world stuff & avatar powers & bending #that plus i just don't vibe with the aesthetic #being a writer is a curse because when i dislike something it's because i know exactly what went wrong & why #it's always with the analyzing & the judging & the internal note taking #even when i really try i can't just enjoy shit for fun

Thinking about how there's a lot more ghosts wandering Mondstadt in the Archon Dvalin AU than usual because Venti is usually the one sending off spirits into the afterlife and well. he's kinda stuck on that side post-Cataclysm

At first there weren't any because they just followed Venti, but afterwards there were some that still lingered and the number just kept piling up over the centuries. Many did eventually go on their own, but there's just more that didn't want to or simply couldn't

Dvalin doesn't know how to send them off, no one really showed him how and he doubts that even if he knew, he probably couldn't. Still, whenever a spirit decides to show themself, he stays with them for a bit, just to alleviate their burdens even a little and maybe help them find enough peace

It's probably another thing that eats at him alive because he couldn't even help those that he failed to protect, no matter how much most of them say it isn't his fault

And then, after the whole reconciliation with Celio thing, one of the lingering spirits asks him for a song. Before, he might've gently turned down the request, but after everything, he decided he might as well

Dvalin starts singing an old song he loved. Singing it had been painful, once, considering it was made as a duet and having to listen to the silent answer just brought him nothing but grief. Now, there's a sort of peace to how the breeze and the sound of nature fill in the gaps and pauses.

Over the course of the song, more and more ghosts come to listen. By the end of it, Dvalin opens his eyes to see most of them disappear, not in terms of hiding away like usual but rather beginning to dissolve into light as they finally move on

The last one to leave was the one who requested a song. She turns to smile at him. "I suppose I can finally tell that bard how much you've grown," she says before finally dissipating into the wind

#anemo archon dvalin au #I wanted to post hurt/comfort so I dusted off one of my drafts and added the comfort part #anyway yeah the last ghost was from the Cataclysm and probably met Venti briefly when they were still both alive #and then she met him again as he was gathering up all the dead so they could go together #but then she takes one look at Dvalin looking absolutely miserable #and decides she ain't going to rest until she deems the poor guy to be doing fine #it took 500 years but y'know Mondstadters are a certain brand of insane sometimes #trying to watch over him as a lingering ghost kinda did the opposite effect tho but she tried her best #'what about the miasma and evils spirits that would appear due to all these ghosts tho?' you may ask #Idk copious amounts of seals and blessings and maybe the occasional exorcist that pass by #Venti's resentment and regrets were probably the only tatarigami that plagued Mond #and even then it just stayed around the vicinity where Venti died and took a while to even manifest #mostly due to whatever wackery is going on in Dragonspine + intervention from Andrius and Dvalin
