Love Live! Sunshine!! Movie Review

Honestly delightful movie and I'm gonna miss these girls a lot. I mean, we're getting that isekai spin-off next season (yes, very good timing with my watch) so I'll see them again, but it won't be the same.

I found the original Love Live movie, like a lot of my issues with the original Love Live, to be overblown. It was incredibly sappy and incredibly self indulgent. I mean, we had three music performances in a row, the PENultimate one including the entire city dancing and singing with them. Sunshine's movie does not do that. In fact, it's mostly quite upbeat and spreads out its songs very evenly and the last one don't have the third years on stage (well, partly metaphorically) which is quite daring (for Love Live).

The visuals aren't a huge upgrade or anything. It looks like the series, but the most polished look of the series, you know? I found all the songs memorable here (which I didn't with the series) like I did with the original Love Live film (i noticed the parallels in the type of songs and their placements). It was lovely to see all the girls in different casual attires instead of just their school uniforms.

It's not perfect. I think the Italy trip, as fun as it proved to be, didn't really justify it's narrative necessity. So, sometimes when the characters said "oh, what the Italy trip taught us or made us grow into" didn't really hit. And the whole deal with Mari's mother arranging a marriage for her didn't really end up going anywhere. In fact, I suspect it was mostly an excuse to get the girls overseas lol. But, you know, the film is supposed to be a victory lap for the girls, so I think it's all in good fun. Might i say that with You's cousin and the marriage, Sunshine rejects heterosexuality at every turn.

I love lesbians. It's amazing what women will come up with if left to their own devices.

Honestly, Sunshine was just so fun overall. Something I noticed was that I think the original series focused a bit more on the writing and composing songs, but Sunshine never really did that. It was much more about its comedy, and that's Love Live at its best. When it's just it's silly little sitcom with these nine girls. It's not always laugh out loud funny, but it's always pleasant funny with the occasional giggling like a schoolgirl funny for me.

Something else that needs to be mentioned in comparison to the original series is how ridiculously gay the characters are here lol. I mean, the original series had a bit, but in Sunshine men practically don't exist and homosexuality is the only possible sexual orientation. Like, they're all gay coded. And sometimes it's not even like, just subtext, it's literally text. We get confessions lol. But it's always framed so there is some plausible deniability, cause the Japanese market is still too socially regressive, but I know the series (compared to Idolm@ster) has an incredibly strong queer fandom and I think that's lovely in such a mega hit franchise.

From what I've seen of Idolm@ster, which I will get to sometime, I'm not as optimistic, cause it seems to be a bit more straight (with the producer) and about the actual industry which includes loli characters. I HATE the actual industry to the point that Oshi no Ko isn't critical enough for me. So, I don't know how that's gonna work out for me but I've heard the anime is good. But Love Live avoids all that cause it's just school idols. Much more in the vein of K-On! than actual idol anime.

Anyway, but as with the gay, these are all lesbians, but it's covered up a bit for the sake of marketing. So, it's light yuri, but I consider it genuinely good representation that shouldn't go overlooked. But Love Live is always gonna be a bit like that, not just in its gayness, but the overall feel of the show. It'll always be a charming mix of corporate marketing and actual artistic sincerity from its hands on creators. K-On didn't have any of the calculated corporate feel for me (S2 and onwards) but Love Live is the next best thing perhaps with Bocchi (but in different ways).

Anyway, sorry about the ramble. When I'm done with all the Love Live series (should hop on the next soon), I wanna make a big youtube video where I rank all the girls and dig into their characters, cause there's so much I haven't said and I wanna explain specifics, but it'll wait.

Great film tho.

La película de Love Live! Sunshine!! titulada “Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over The Rainbow” se estreno el 4 de enero de 2019

Love Live Sunshine cuenta la historia de Chika Takami, una joven de segundo de preparatoria quien desea dejar su vida monótona atrás y convertirla en algo interesante. En el camino titubea, al descubrir la profesión de School Idols, quienes son chicas de preparatoria emulando ser idolas de la música profesionales, tomando inspiracion el grupo de µ's, pero es gracias a su amiga, You Watanabe, que se convence de intentarlo, además de ser inspirada por las últimas campeonas del concurso para School Idols, el Love Live.

En su camino a perseguir ese sueño, Chika da con Riko Sakurauchi, una joven de Tokyo que se mudo para estudiar en la escuela costera donde Chika y su amiga asistian. En poco tiempo, Chika terminó convenciendo a Riko de volverse una miembro de su grupo, al igual que convenció a tres chicas más de primer año: Ruby Kurosawa, Hanamaru Kunikida y Yoshiko Tsushima de entrar en su grupo.

Con seis miembros en su haber, Chika se presenta ante la presidenta del consejo estudiantil de su escuela: Dia Kurosawa, quien es una exigente señorita de tercer año. Antes rechazaba las School Idols en la escuela, pero tras ver los intentos sin parar de Chika, finalmente accedió a hacer oficial su club y dejarles laborar actividades en la escuela.

Durante un tiempo, y cuando parecian tener todo lo que necesitaban, You, su coreografa, se dio cuenta que en ninguna de ellas había una profesional del baile para seguir, lo que significaba que sus esfuerzos estaban llendo en círculos descendientes. Pero pronto descubrieron en secreto a Kanan Matsuura, una joven de tercer año quien es amiga de la infancia de Chika y You, quien al parecer practicaba a escondidas su baile muy bien afinado. Cuando Chika le cuenta a Kanan su sueño de ser School Idol, esta reacciona alejada del asunto, como si lo evitase, pero apoya a sus amigas aún con ese comportamiento.

Tiempo después, Dia Kurosawa, Kanan Matsuura y Mari Ohara, un trio de amigas de la infancia, se unen al grupo de Chika, que ahora le dieron el nombre de Aqours, tras ver el resultado de las calificatorias del Love Live, pues el grupo de Chika perdió antes de entrar en semifinales.

En este mismo evento conocen a la bina Saint Snow, un grupo School Idol de hermanas de Hokkaido, brillantes y jóvenes promesas. Sarah Kazuno y Leah Kazuno, Saint Snow son un grupo inspirado en A-RISE

Cuando Aqours es ahora un grupo de nueve integrantes y tienen asesoría de unas competentes participantes del Love Live: Saint Snow, llevan el grupo a un nivel cada vez más profesional, pasando por experiencias que enriquecen el crecimiento de cada una de ellas y su amistad.

Poco a poco, el grupo va tomando esencia propia, y Chika deja de compararse con sus heroínas del pasado que la inspiraron a ser School Idol, cada integrante se vuelve un engrane más que empuja de manera positiva y eficiente al grupo en si, y en su segunda inscripción al Love Live, el grupo Aqours se alzan como campeonas.

Rivelata la data di debutto del film di “Love Live! Sunshine!!”

Le Aqours sbarcheranno nei cinema giapponesi dal prossimo anno.

L’annunciato film di “Love Live! Sunshine!” ha da oggi un titolo ed una data di uscita. La pellicola si chiamerà “Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow” e approderà nei cinema giapponesi dal 4 gennaio 2019.

Il film andrà ad arricchire il franchise “Love Live” sviluppato e prodotto dalla rivista Dengeki G’s Magazine, lo studio di animazione Sunrise e l’etichetta discografica Lantis che comprende oltre al popolare anime anche manga, album e concerti tenuti dalle doppiatrici delle protagoniste.

La serie segue i nove membri del gruppo di idol Aqours del liceo Uranohoshi, situato nella località balneare di Numazu, nella prefettura di Shizuoka. Chika Takami, leader del gruppo di ragazze, è una grande fan delle μ's e come loro forma le Aqours al fine di salvare la propria scuola dalla chiusura.

La seconda stagione dell’anime ha fatto il suo debutto il 7 ottobre 2017, mentre la prima stagione è andata in onda la scorsa estate ed è stata acquistata per l’Italia da Yamato Video che l’ha trasmessa in simulcast streaming, sottotitolata, sul canale YouTube Yamato Animation, dove è ancora disponibile.

Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over the Rainbow

The movie was very cute! I also liked how they decided to keep Aqours going even if it was just the six, it was a nice message and fit the group more than it would have muse. Also I am a Saint Snow stan now, all their songs are bops and I hope that we can get another song from them at some point but I don’t know if it will happen.
