Book Review: I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen
Tumblr media
Okay, I get why so many people go on about this now, though not to the extent that they do. It's a simple book with a plot I've seen before, but the twist ending is funny enough, depending on the person it's read to/reading it.

Part of me wants to stretch the meaning of "a court/royal book" (a prompt for the Orilium Autumn Equinox readathon) just a teensy bit and count Cold Days by Jim Butcher.
The queens of fairy play a really big part in that one (like, basically the entire plot has to do with them, in various ways), and the book opens at court, so if anyone else were to ask me if it would count, I'd say yes.
But, it's me, and I doubt my choices and always feel like I'm screwing up etc.

Would anyone be interested in doing a buddy read of Terry Pratchett's Mort next month? I'm participating in a readathon where one of the prompts is a buddy read and I though this one would be a fun choice!

Persuasion Review
Tumblr media
Persuasion by Jane Austen is a 267 page Adult Romance Classic.
Eight years ago, Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth fell head over heels in love. But Anne's snobbish family put a stop to their engagement, believing the young naval captain wasn't good enough for her. Pretty, intelligent Anne soon realises it was a terrible mistake, and spends her twenties in the shadow of her father and her selfish sisters. But she never forgets. Then Captain Wentworth - by now a successful, wealthy man, looking for a wife - walks back into her life. Can he forgive her? Does he still love her? And could they ever be happy, after all this time?
I rate this book 2/5 stars.
I absolutely didn’t follow any moment within this book, yet somehow I was compelled to continue this one rather than DNF’ing it. I still don’t know why. Maybe it’s because it was simply for a quest during the Magical Readathon Orilium 2023.
Because of this, I honestly can’t say if I recommend this one or not. There is one thing I know for sure, and that I that I won’t keep my copy of the book.
Do you have any questions? Or maybe some recommendations? Send me an ask here on Tumblr or tweet me.  If you wish to support me, you can buy me a coffee! Or even buy my debut fantasy novel, The Mending Road.

Magical Readathon Spring Equinox 2024
The start of April means it is time again for one of my favorite readathons, Magical Readathon. Classes at Orilium resume today, and my character has the month to try to get good grades while also maybe going on some side quests. We’ll see how motivated he is… lol. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you can find more information about the Magical Readathon in this term’s announcement…

Magical Readathon 2024 | Spring Equinox | Reset of Character
We are nearing April and that always brings us the Spring Equinox of the Magical Readathon by Book Roast! As I haven’t been feeling too great I’d like to use this years magical readathon to create some fun but nothing that asks too much of me. Previous years I was very ambitious with that character but that never worked out quite so well. About the Readathon You can find out more about this…

The Hazel Wood • Book Review.
Hello People!!!! How are we doing? What is up with life? Is everything good? Good! Because I am about to turn it bad. Welcome to my hell hole! Quite literally! This review will be terrible and is a rant review so you might as well turn back right now if you don’t want to get angry and also if you don’t want spoilers. I am usually a No Spoiler person but this book forced me. So if you have decided…

Anticipated books for Aug.-Sept ✨️ I can't believe it's already half the year 😭 and I'm already seeing Halloween decorations in stores! Anyhoo, I have any books I want to read coming up for Latinx Heritage Month as well as for the spooky season so I found some books that I think would fit both themes. Although there's going to be more spooky reads later tbh 😅 Some books came out years ago (trying to bring books from my tbr 📚) and some books are coming out soon and they sound so good!

soooooooo let's talk about April.
April is coming, there are like- three more days of March before it's here. and despite the fact that I spent March feeling like trash, I'm going to load myself up with goals and I'm actually really excited about it.
So! in the month of April I will be doing Camp Nano, my goal is 500 words a day, so by the end of the month I want to have 30000 words, I will be focusing on Young/Royal/Misfit and that 30000 will be a mix of shorts and the actual fic.
I'm also doing the Magical Readathon- it's run by Book Roast on youtube- you make a character and read books to help you towards you're 'degree' in the magical school. I'm going for Alchemist which means I'm reading 10 books at least. and two of those books are the first two Grisha books for my re-read and I will be adding the third one in too- it just won't count for the readathon
So anyway, I'm very excited for next month. anyone else doing Camp - or the magical readathon?

Magical Readathon (Autumn Equinox 2023) Week 3 Wrap-Up
Read
The Hidden Oracle/Rick Riordan (Trials of Apollo #1) (thoughts) (thoughts) (review)
Hope in the Holler/Lisa Lewis Tyre (thoughts) (review)
Journey to the Center of the Earth/Jules Verne (thoughts) (thoughts) (thoughts) (review)
The Growing-Up Feet/Beverly Cleary, illustrated by DyAnne DiSalvo-Ryan (Two Times the Fun #3) (review)
Currently reading
Earthrise/M.C.A Hogarth (Her Instruments #1)-I'm nearly a quarter through which is more than I expected to be because this book is over 600 pages, which I'm still nervous about because I'm always worried with big books that they weren't edited enough and so far with this one I don't see a need yet.
It started out a bit too fanfictiony for my tastes--as in everything happened so fast and I didn't even get used to the characters yet--but I've settled in (it's also slowed down a bit) and am enjoying it, though I doubt it will be a 5-star.
I do really like how the author writes action scenes. It's generally hard for me to get sucked into action scenes in books, but I am in this one.
I also like the worldbuilding. There are all kinds of different aliens. So far, it's not really exploring them except for one and a half, but I hope they will in the future and I appreciate that it's not just humans but slightly different.

July Orilium Wrap Up
July Orilium Wrap Up
July Orilium Wrap Up July was a month. I had a lot of plans and wanted to catch up on my Goodreads goal since I was pretty behind. I made some decent progress at the beginning of the month while I recovered from COVID. I’m also a teacher who managed to save a bit between roles so I’m able to take an extended break since my first year was incredibly hard and I needed a lot of space to recover and…

Magical Readathon Autumn Equinox TBR
It’s August, which means it’s time for the next installment of the Orilium Magical Readathon! This time we’re heading back to Orilium Academy for our Autumn Equinox semester. This readathon is always so extensive and a lot of fun, so if you haven’t got any reading plans for August yet I’d highly recommend checking it out. Here’s my TBR for the month!

My Novice Path Experience
I did The Novice Path forever ago now but I wanted to go over it again for memory preservations sake and also just because it creates content. I had been following the Magical Readathons that G was creating before Orilium came into her mind. So to know that she had a new world for us to explore made me so excited!
Tumblr media
My TBR at the time consisted of the following books:
The Novice Path Entrance - read a book with  a map - Highway of Tears by Jessica McDiarmid
Ashthorn Tree - a book that keeps tempting you - Namesake by Adrienne Young
The Mist of Solitude - read a standalone - The World According to Mr. Rogers by Fred Rogers
Ruin of the Skye - read a book featuring ghosts/haunted house, or other supernatural elements - Charles Fort: the Man Who Invented the Supernatural by Jim Steinmeyer
Obsidian Falls - read a thriller or mystery book - Carrie by Stephen King
Tower of Rumination - read a five star prediction - House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Orilium Academy - read a book with a school setting - A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik
I had a relatively good experience with most of the books. My ratings were also as follows:
Highway of Tears by Jessica McDiarmid  - I loved the way the book goes through the actual people effected by this demonstration of neglect on the part of the Canadian Government. The stories were heartbreaking and the information was enlightening. The experience was a roller coaster and I learned a lot.
Namesake by Adrienne Young - This was the second book in a series so I was very excited to read it! We got a little more insight into some of the characters I adore as well as a lot of really interesting additions. I have the third book and I promise its on my TBR but I just haven’t gotten to it yet! I will though! eventually....
The World According to Mr. Rogers by Fred Rogers - I am of the generation that could actually watch Mr. Rogers (a.k.a OLD) and I really enjoyed this book. It was short and sweet and it gave me a sense of nostalgia and calm. It wasn’t the most fantastic thing I have ever read but it was a nice intermission in the readathon.
Charles Fort: The Man Who invented the Supernatural by Jim Steinmeyer - This book was incredibly interesting for what felt like no reason. Charles Fort is a surprisingly interesting man. He just kind of slowly goes crazy but also he was really creative and probably just suffering from mental illness. I really enjoyed this biography.
Carrie by Stephen King - I liked this one less than some of his other books from this era. However, it wasn’t bad by any means! I prefer the book to the movies (what else is new?) and I didn’t hate the way King wrote his female protagonist so I was satisfied overall.
House in the Cerulean Sea - One of my new favorite books of all time. I have read this book four times since The Novice Path. I am SO happy I read this book and I recommend it to so many people every time it enters my mind. Beautiful settings, wonderful characters, great morals, SO PURE but so real at the same time. One of the best books I have EVER read. READ IT.
A Deadly Education - The opposite of Cerulean Sea. I hated the characters, I hated the setting and I hated the plot. I ended the month with this book and I was genuinely disappointed to end on such a terrible note. I promised I would never pick up another book her Novik after reading this.
________________________________________________________________
My responses to the scenarios:
B: I know not to mess with any writing I cannot decipher so I don’t approach it. But I also do not leave without quickly copying a few symbols on a piece of parchment as I pass it, to try and look up later.
D: I try to calm my breathing, minimize feedback by closing my eyes and focus on my hands and feet. I establish a connection with earth and let it guide me towards the end of the mist.
D: I activate a protection glyph to shield both myself and my group.
A: Find a herbal remedy nearby, there's always one if you know what to look for! You have might try a few but if you know your plants, you’ll find a combination before time runs out!
A: Scroll of Lore
I ended up with the guild Order of the Crescent and was incredibly happy with that result!
________________________________________________________________
The Novice Path in general was a great experience and if this readathon ever comes to an end I can see myself repeating it with different character creation processes in the future!
HEY!
Tell me about your character? How was your journey on the novice path? what’s up dawg?
Thanks for reading and I hope everyone has a good day/night!
Best wishes,
Chelsey
