Summary: Nico has had enough of being Maki

“Uhgn…” Maki groaned.

Or at least her body groaned, in response to Nico’s mind’s frustration. By the gods, this was confusing. And having to actually concentrate in class didn’t help. She was exhausted. Or Maki was… ughn…

It had been over a week since she had awakened after being body swapped with some other girl. Some only child spoiled brat from what seemed like the richest family in the city. Nishikino Maki, apparently.

She had never seen a house with so many rooms. She had never imagined living with so many servants to dote on her and fulfil her every desire. And at first it had been wonderful to be so pampered.

The Nishikino patriarch had given her a few days to adjust to her new life. Then he hit her with the expectations. She was now to present herself as the proper lady and heir to the family company. Or conglomerate. Or whatever.

This Maki girl apparently attended UTX, which had been a dream of Nico’s for years, and was apparently the best student in her grade, and damn near the best in the school. And therein was the first problem.

Nico, while not exactly dumb, was nowhere near the best student, even in a lower-class school like Otonokizaka. Sure, she could pull a solid B when she needed to, but she preferred to focus her energy on a career as an idol than waste her time on academics.

Maki’s body had been Enhanced and Augmented to Perfection, but even with those aids, Nico struggled to retain Maki’s position. As such, her new father tweaked things to the point that it felt like she was running on a sort of autopilot, leaving her to mostly bear witness to the actions of Maki’s body and ghost of her mind.

Nico wanted desperately now to return to her prior life. Back to her family. Her friends. And her old, unmodded body.

“There you are.”

Wait, she knew that voice! It was hers!

“Mak…” She was cut off as a hand clamped across her mouth and she was pulled into a nearby classroom.

“Don’t call me that.” Maki, in Nico’s body said. “Nobody can know I’m here.”

“So…”

“Call me Tsubasa. That is how everyone else is seeing me now.”

“But I’m seeing you as me.”

“Look, I don’t get how your friend Nozomi’s enchantment works, but apparently I look like Tsubasa to everyone else, but like to you to you.”

Nico felt a twinge of jealousy. Tsubasa was one of her idols. Why couldn’t she have been swapped with her instead?

“Anyway, I can’t stay long.” Maki said before shoving something into Nico’s hand. “I came to give you this.”

“What is it?” Nico inspected what looked like a mundane crystal.

“Kotori calls it D.U.E.T. but I don’t remember what it stands for. I’m sorry, your lack of Memory Modules makes it hard…”

“Well sorry for not reaching Perfection.” Nico interrupted with a huff.

“Anyway, we each have one, and through it we can communicate without my father knowing. And we can train each other to, well, be each other.”

“But I don’t wanna be you!”

“I know. Believe me, I know.” Maki sighed. “Look, your family is amazing. And I’m honestly jealous of how much they adore you. But I’m not you. And they need you. And I need… to figure out what to do about my own family. But if my father gets frustrated with you and decides to swap you out for someone else, it will make it that much more difficult to fix things.”

“So until we figure out how to swap back, we need to learn how to be better at being the other.” Nico concluded.

“Exactly.”

Nico held her own gaze for a long moment before sighing. “Fine.” She slipped the device in her bag. “Thank Nozomi and Kotori for me when you see them.”

Maki nodded and left the room.

Author's Note Continued: A continuation of an entry from last year, Useless Perfection, where an irate Nishikino patriarch forcibly swapped Maki and Nico in order to have a daughter who appreciated what he has done for her and lives up to his expectations.

I'm still very much in the process of figuring out all that I want to do with the Paragon world and its versions of the LL girls. And someday I might even write something for them that isn't an event entry. But at least it's been a fun option to use for prompts.

Also, Body Swap was the prompt from '21 and Duet was from '22.
