Sapphic Star Wars is hosting a ship tournament to highlight sapphic rarepairs, and we would like to hear from YOU! Let us know if there are any rarepairs we have missed that you would like to see included (current list under the cut)!

Our rarepair list was sourced from our ever growing collection of all sapphic sw ships found here, then narrowed down to everything that has between 1-50 fics on AO3 (by the wonderful @livelaughleia).

Even the Darkest Stars

Heather Fawcett set the bar extremely high with The School Between Winter and Fairyland, and so far none of her books have reached that peak. She never fails with the worlds she builds though, and this is certainly no exception.

While the story moves at a slower pace, as they traverse the mountains, the writing still held me captive and needing to know what would happen next.

Kamzin is the younger daughter of the Elder. Despite her lack of talent for magic, she's apprenticed to Chirri, to be the next shaman. Chirri has all but given up on her, and her friend Tem often does Kamzin's tasks for her. Kamzin's sister, Lusha, is on track to be the next Elder.

Everything changes with the appearance of the Royal Explorer, River Shara. Lusha is supposed to guide his expedition to Raksha, the highest mountain in the Aryas, a peak that no one has been able to climb, and that only two living people know the location of. Lusha, and Kamzin. The morning they are meant to set out, Kamzin wakes to find that River's supplies have been ransacked, and his assistant Mara and Lusha are both missing.

Lusha may read the stars, and have the quiet strength that makes her a born leader, but she doesn't know the mountains like Kamzin does. River quickly recruits Kamzin to restock the supplies and lead his expedition. Kamzin can't resist the call of the mountains, the mystery of Raksha. The opportunity to make a name for herself, to rise up to be an explorer herself. As well as concern for her sister, all serving to spur her on into the mountains. Not to mention the draw of River himself.

The mountains aren't so eager to give up their secrets, and soon Kamzin feels the responsibility for the lives she's leading deeper and deeper into the unknown. Could her sister still be alive? Can they all make it safely through the Aryas? And is the talisman they seek and the secrets of Raksha worth the risk?

This left me eager to get my hands on the next one. Definitely look into this if you don't mind a slow burn, and lots of traveling. The slower spots are worth what they lead up to.

I’m dipping back into Agent Hell for a little bit, and I wanted to post a comparison of Baby Zhorrid and actual Darth Zhorrid. I can’t get any goddamn screenshots from the same angle on this bitch ever for a better side-by-side comparison, but I’m sometimes really happy with how she turned out. I’m annoyed that the complexion that has her corruption has thinner eyebrows that just aren’t right at all for her face, and that changing her face shape or body type so that her face would be just a little narrower (it’s odd, from some angles, her face seems a little gaunt, and from some angles, she still seems baby-faced) would fuck up her nose shape. But overall, especially since her time as an apprentice and a young Lord would be before you meet her in the IA story, it probably works that she wouldn’t look as corrupted yet and would look almost healthy (Quesh lighting does great things for her).

And as a bonus, my other npc clone that just makes my heart swell, because I don’t know that I ever did a side-by-side comparison:

i’m having a lot of fun posting about dinluke but i was suddenly hit with the fear that if they bring back luke they’ll also try to cram mara jade in there. outside of shipping/headcanons here’s why i would fucking hate that:

-there is absolutely no mention of her in the canon thrawn series/story. at this point if they wanted to introduce her it would have had to be in those books.

-there’s also no mention of her literally anywhere else in ANY of the canon comics from 2015.

-shattered empire 4 (the canon comic that takes place after ROTJ in which shara bey helps luke retrieve force sensitive trees from imperial remnants) takes place in about 5ABY (after battle of yavin)

-2x16 “the rescue” as well as TBOBF take place in 9ABY. it’s not crazy to think that maybe luke could have gotten married in those four years, but as of 5ABY there was no mention of her and from what i understand from legends they were not a fastburn (she was literally an imperial assassin sent to kill him. it takes time to go from that to MARRIED).

-if luke was married, mara jade would have to die in 28ABY when kylo destroyed the jedi temple. either that or luke straight up left her.

-this would just suck all around. why would you introduce her if we already know how and when she’s going to die? there’s no intrigue there. it would also kind of be a sucker punch to people who are fans of her.

-there was no mention of her in TLJ at all. if he really HAD been married, or if his wife dying was one of the reasons he exiled himself to ahch-to, wouldn’t he have mentioned that? like at all? she was his WIFE for crying out loud.

-anything they tried to do would be rushed and half-baked. to randomly bring her in would just be bad storytelling.

-to just say “oh yeah luke is married by the way” would also be fucking stupid lol.

-they don’t have a way to tell that story well. if luke DOES come back as another actor, then it will likely only be as cameos or as a small role. i don’t think people would be very into a totally recasted luke-centered show. i know i sure wouldn’t.

-i personally (as an avid luke/OT fan and resident mark hamill lover) would be pretty annoyed if they tried for a live action luke-centered story in which mark hamill ISN’T the one playing luke. when i talk about dinluke i am well aware that i’ll be feeding off of crumbs. it’s more the concept that i like than me thinking anything will actually come of it.

-i joke, but i only want luke to come back if he’s going to be a background character.

there have been rumors around mara jade literally since TFA came out and legends/EU were officially decanonized so obviously any rumors from random youtube channels or twitter or news sites i’ve never heard of shouldn’t be taken seriously, but now that there’s a real possibility we’ll see luke again it just makes me kind of nervous.

this may be a bit random but do you have any reading lists (novels, comics, etc) for the eu/legends, especially for leia (or just in general)?

i’m sorry this took ages! i love getting asks like this still 😭 i haven’t read any new material in a couple years, so i can’t speak to the latest comics, but here’s some of my favorites

eu comics

thrawn trilogy (1995-1998). these were originally novels, and now they’re like the cornerstone of the eu. they introduce mara jade and eventually han and leia’s twins!

dark empire trilogy (1991-1995). very eu in the sense that the writing is kinda nuts, but it’s a Classic^TM

infinities (2001-2004). okay, so. these are essentially canon aus for the original trilogy. there are five issues each for a new hope, the empire strikes back, and return of the jedi. in each one of those three, something happens that didn’t happen in the films. anh’s twist is that leia serves the empire (kinda), very weird and very sexy

a valentine story (2003). this will only appeal to you if you’re a hanleia fan, but it’s my guilty pleasure. it’s just one issue set right before empire in which han and leia get stuck in the falcon during a blizzard. pure fun

splinter of the mind’s eye (1995-1996). i’m telling you this now before you look for recommendations anywhere else and find this: it’s bad. it’s got hints of incest. it’s ooc for leia. the only plus is that leia has a lightsaber duel with vader

shadows of the empire (1996). up there with the thrawn trilogy in must-reads of the eu imo. leia is drawn with black lipstick in this for some reason and i don’t know why but i love it

star wars (dark horse) (2013-2014). this consists of: in the shadow of yavin, from the ruins of alderaan, rebel girl, and a shattered hope. the art is kinda wonky but it’s good reading

current canon comics

marvel’s star wars (2015-ongoing). i fell out of reading this around the 50th issue, but the first few dozens are some of my favorites. super fun, set betweena anh + empire

star wars: princess leia (2015). The Leia Comic. introduced evaan verlaine, one of my faves! the art is nice too and it’s mildly gay

star wars: shattered empire (2015). this is set immediately after rotj and heavily features kes dameron and shara bey, poe’s parents! they work together w/ han, luke, and leia, and it’s a lot of fun. i love that art too

age of rebellion: princess leia (2019). a quick oneshot but has one of my fave lines about leia ever

star wars annual 2 (2015). ditto and i love this art sm

the storms of crait (2017). ugly art but fun

eu novels

thrawn trilogy, i prefer the novels anyway but they’re both great

tatooine ghost! famed for having the most nsfw hanleia moment

the truce at bakura, i read this AGES ago but i liked it

avoid the courtship of princess leia at all costs. HORRIBLY LAUGHABLY ooc here’s a picture of it burning

shadows of the empire, which i also forgot was a novel until now

canon novels

bloodline, probably my favorite. i don’t realllllly recommend leia: princess of alderaan by the same author because i don’t love it myself but you might enjoy it!

last shot. definitely more of a han and lando story, leia’s only briefly in it, but it’s a REALLY fun read overall so i’m putting it here

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Some ships may have more than 50 fics on AO3 now, but at the time of the original data pull (November 2023) they were below the threshold.

Threats of violence or jokes of killing characters mentioned in the polls will not be tolerated. Commenting or tagging polls with calls for harm will result in an immediate block.

cassian the put upon host (he is a perfect, perfect straight man - and also one of the finest comedians of his generation) who puts together a team of improv geniuses so he can get paid to shoot the shit with his friends. certified jyn erso stan, usually looks at her with heart eyes - and fans definitely notice.

jyn the quietly brutal former protégé of second city legend saw gerrera and daughter of icon snl members galen and lyra erso. she can't get enough of fucking with the censors (especially kay) or director, draven. absolutely hates the hoedown but loves watching bodhi kill at the musical bits. "literally no one is funnier when pissed off" than jyn, according to cassian.

bodhi the broadway star with the voice of an angel. went into theater to combat his crippling anxiety. breaks character often but the audience loves his laugh. a phenomenal dramatic actor.

chirrut and baze, married actors who came out of retirement to do the show. chirrut is an ordained minister of a non-dominational religion that no one really understands but him. they are audience favorites due to their impeccable timing and chemistry. chirrut never fails to make baze laugh.

“Stop calling me, I'm busy, Obispo”. You mutter with anger and the phone on your left ear.

“Then forgive me”.

“Fuc' off! You don't fuckin' deserve anything from me”.

“It was a bet!”

“Yeah', you lost a bet, and also me”. Without giving him the opportunity to reply, you hung up with a bitter snort.

You had been working for almost twelve hours at the hospital, from dusk till dawn. Two long surgeries, three car accidents and some fake emergencies of people who visit it because some coughs. You didn't even have time to eat, other than a few bites of a cold sandwich. So, when you finished your turn, the only thing you wanted to do was go to the clubhouse and have a beer between your man's arms. But when you arrived and saw one of Vicki's girl on his lap serving tequila directly in his mouth, the hell burned like never before. It has been three infernal days since then, with a lot of Bishop's calls and texts begging you to forgive him.

Keeping your phone in the pocket of your doctor's gown, you walk towards the locker room to change your clothes. Resting your forehead against your box-office, with an angry tear running down your cheek. It's not like he's cheating on you, but disrespecting whatever it supposed you two have together. Maybe you don't have the right to reproach him for anything, 'cause you're not his Old Lady, but you have the right to cut everything with him after feeling so humiliated.

Your phone dings with a notification, when you're trying to figure out where are your car keys, supporting your waist against one of the doors. Unknown number. You roll your eyes opening the text.

📨: hi, im shara, im sorry about what happened with bishop. we were just having fun, i dont want anything with him and i also know he loves you. i never wanted to bother you and im so sorry. hes always talking about you and its amazing the way he does. please talk with him, vicki told us hes fucking bad

Rubbing the bridge of your nose, you lock the phone to put it inside your bag. After finding the keys, you drive your way back home. You don't want to talk with him, not even if you have read the message. What happened hurt you, hurt your ego and feed your insecurities. And it's not going to be easy to recover.

The headlights of your car illuminate the facade of your house, spotting Bishop sitting by your door and smoking a cigar almost consumed. He looks tired, with dark circles under her eyes and a sloppy beard covering his jaw. He throws the cigarette away, getting up and placing both hands by his back, with the head down. He doesn't know what more can say to you.

You keep silent, passing him away to open the door, closing it without letting him come in. Through the peephole you can see how he sits again, rubbing his nape with a hand. A sigh escapes from your lips, turning around to walk towards your room. Leaving your stuff on the unmade bed and getting undressed, you go to the shower taking your time in under the water, until your fingertips are wrinkled.

Wrapping your body with a long towel and your hair in another, you come back to the main room, to wear some comfy clothes and find something to eat in the kitchen. Your fridge is empty, 'cause you forgot shopping for food, so you need to order something. But before doing it, you walk next to the front door having another look by the peephole to see that Bishop still there. Sitting in silence with his locked phone in his hands, like if you were gonna text him or something. Opening the door, he turns a little towards you.

“I'm gonna order some food, you wan'?” He shakes his head and, by the way you opened the door, he knows he can't come in.

You nod with pursed lips, closing it again and pressing the button to make the order. If he's trying to make you feel sorry, he's doing it pretty well, but then you remember what happened and you forget how he feels.

The night passes and when you're about to sleep, you walk outside one last time, opening the door and supporting your body against the frame.

“Are you gonna sleep there...?”

“Yes”.

“It's cold, Bishop. Go home”.

“If I've to die tonight, I'll do it waiting for you to forgive me”.

“Sounds like a bad movie on Netflix...” You sigh rolling your eyes a little desperate.

“I'm sorry, (Y/N). I didn't mean to hurt you. You're my girl, my one and only, my Old Lady, and I wa—”.

“No, I'm not”. You interrupt him, getting up of the door frame, with a confused gesture on your face. “You didn't propose me, nor ask me, nor introduce me to the club, even if they also know me”.

“I was about to do it”.

“When? Before or after drinking the tequila with that bitch on top of you, uh? I don't know too much about the MCs, but I'm sure it's not the way to introduce your girlfriend to them”.

Bishop, snortling and placing both hands on his head, sinks his face between his knees.

“Go home, Obispo. It's late and you look like shit... We will talk... tomorrow”.

Then, he turns at you getting up and holding his helmet from the floor.

“You promise?”

“Jesus Christ, Bishop... Go home”.

“No, no, no. Promise me. Promise me we're gonna talk tomorrow”. He says walking next to you.

“Yea', Bishop, sure... I promise”.

A soft smile is drawing in his lips, putting a hand on your left cheek, to leave a kiss on the right. You hold his hands, closing your eyes and enjoying the nearest. You miss him. Every touch, every word, every kiss. And you fall again, wrapping his back with your arms. He hugs you back, tightly, leaving some kisses on your head.

“You can... sleep on my sofa”. You whispers, pulling him away some inches. “It's late and... you look tired. You shouldn' drive”.

“You sure, querida...?”

You nod one time. With an arm on your shoulders, he guides you through the door, closing it after coming in. He leaves his vest and the helmet on the table in the living room, while you go to your room to find a blanket. When you come back he's already lying there, with the boots on a side of the floor and an arm covering his eyes. You sigh for a second, offering him.

“Thank you”. He says grabbing your wrist to pull you closer.

He knows he doesn't deserve to sleep in your bed tonight, but he really wants to sleep with you and the sofa is pretty huge for both. You let him lay you down next to him, tangling your legs with his and sinking your face on his neck, taking a deep breath of his scent. Bishop wraps your body with his arms, getting comfortable by your side.

“You have to shave tomorrow, please”.

“I will, but let me sleep all day. I need it”.

“I need it too”.

Further thoughts on FInn being from Yavin and how this could play out, here in the context of his relationship with Poe.

I think Finn’s family is very well alive. I don’t think the First Order or their proxies were going for total devastation, just the kids. At least back then.

How would this affect Finn, Poe and their relationship? I think that depends on how the relationship between the families were before the tragedy and how their relationships evolved after.

Going by the assumption that they were at least reasonably close prior to the First Order raid I could see it go in one of two directions.

Either the two families’ respective tragedies creates a wedge between them as resentment forms. Finn’s parents still have each other, but their son is lost. Kes still has Poe but has lost Shara in the defense of their planet. If so I could see FInn’s and Poe’s relationship be put under stress when Finn discovers his family as their two families and their respective tragedies and mutual resentment is passed on to them. And it’ll lie in their hands to heal that rift.

Alternately the tragedy of mutual loss could have brought the two families closer together. Finn’s have lost their son but in Poe find a treasured nephew that they lavish affection on. While Kes could feel relieved that there’s someone else to look after Poe. He’s till traumatized after the war and losing Shara made it worse, in Poe’s family there’s someone to look after and love Poe on the days that he can’t.

In the case of the latter Finn could easily feel left out and get a feeling of Poe having taken his place, though nothing could be further from the truth. Finn’s family did not try to replace him, but saw a boy who was now without a mother and tried to turn their own grief and loss into something positive. While Poe could easily feel guilty at having had a happy childhood and Finn’s parents in addition to his own, while Finn was left in the abusive care of the First Order. So this too would put a strain on their relationship though of a different and possibly more personal type than the first case, where the strain and stress is more their families than their own feelings.
