Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A woman walks through a cemetery late at night and sings “Frere Jacques” to combat her fear. The score picks that up as someone stalks and kills her. It’s a stylish scene with expressive camera angles and a keen sense of mounting dread. If all of Carlos Aured’s Spanish giallo BLUE EYES OF THE BROKEN DOLL (1974, Shudder, AMC+, Plex) — aka HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN aka HOUSE OF DOOM aka MYSTERY OF THE BLUE EYES — were that effective it would be considered a good example of the genre. But there’s also another plot that really brings on the stupid, and when they come together, the stupid wins. A drifter (Paul Naschy) who dreams and has flashbacks about strangling a woman gets a job as caretaker on the estate of three sisters. Yvette (Maria Perschy) is confined to a wheelchair, though there’s nothing physically keeping her there, after an auto accident. That accident also left Claude (Diana Lorys) with a surprisingly dexterous prosthetic hand. And Nicole (Eva Leon) can hardly stand straight under the weight of her own sexuality. Leon seduces Naschy, who then falls in love with Lorys because he’s really a good person, despite his attempt to rape Perschy’s nurse, who for no discernible reason doesn’t think to tell anybody about it. There’s lots of blood that looks like watered-down fingernail polish and an unfortunate incident with a pig that’s cut in many prints but lovingly restored by Shudder in the interest of completeness and possibly owning PETA. Naschy wrote the script under his birth name, Jacinto Molina, seemingly as a means of distancing himself from his many werewolf films and selling himself as a sex symbol. The latter is partly defeated by his unfortunate resemblance to Dom DeLuise.
