Merlin rewatch -- S2E2: The Once and Future Queen

(Somebody give Merlin a break...)

Merlin’s rant to Gaius was completely legit and really why was Gaius still piling up chores on Merlin after Merlin became Arthur’s manservant? Granted, this time Gaius actually thought Merlin had a week of break, but couldn’t you give him a deserved holiday? Gaius knew Arthur gave Merlin a lot to do (because Merlin complained that to Gaius a lot) AND he knew Merlin had extra work of keeping Arthur (occasionally Uther) safe. One would think he would show more sympathy. Merlin literally passed out on the floor and the first thing Gaius did was call him lazy? No wonder Merlin broke down.

Gaius did apologise in the middle of the episode, which was nice. But Merlin was still cleaning that bloody tank at the end of it. Because what? Merlin lied to Gaius? It wasn’t even something serious, just a get-away which Arthur ordered. Why wasn’t Gaius suspicious anyway when Arthur went out for a magical beast and Merlin wasn’t with him? And now that Gaius knew Merlin hadn’t actually had a week off, in fact extremely busy, shouldn’t he gave the poor boy some rest?

(It’s mostly the production team who decided bullying Merlin is the only way to do comedy, but it didn’t help my frustration for Gaius…)

What were they doing when magic monsters showed up in Camelot before Merlin relocated? Bc from what it looks like there's two a penny every week, and most of them can't be dealt with "with sword and sinew" (🙄). So like, was Gaius moonlighting as a magic saviour?? Does Arthur actually know how to kill these things he just never gets a chance anymore?? Or did the rate of magic incidents skyrocket simultaneously with Merlin's arrival and everyone was like: eh, probably just a coincidence?

Merlin rewatch, 2x10 : Sweet dreams.

Episode rewatched on the 16th of april 2024

Summary :

Dignitaries from rival kingdoms descend on Camelot for peace talks, but what King Alined really wants is war and he'll do everything in his power to stir up hostilities, even if it means using magic. 

Alined's jester Trickler puts a spell on Arthur to make him fall madly in love with rival King Olaf's daughter Vivian. Chaos reigns in the palace and Camelot is once more poised on the brink of war. 

Can Merlin free Arthur's heart before the prince loses his head in battle?

Sounds like a crucial piece of information for Arthur's future, as he is supposedly destined to unite Albion.

Alined looks as amiable as a prison door. Funny to see how he treats his servant and compare it to how Arthur treats Merlin. I wish we'd see how Uther treats his own servant but it seems like this character doesn't exist.

That knight handshake cracks me up all the time. Supposing that we don't sneeze or cough into our elbow, this is a very Covid-era like way of saying hello.

Oh wait THIS IS THE "Destiny and chicken" episode !!!!! Aaaaah I'm excited ! I love this line.

Why does the servant's face looks so familiar to me ? He must have acted in something else I've watched.

Vivian quickly revealing herself to be a brat like one of those Upper East side nepo babies from Gossip girl... That's gonna be fun ! I wonder what Georgia remembers from shooting this episode.

Milady. You're getting Lady Morgana's private maid. This is special treatment. Be graceful about it.

The disbelief on Arthur's face !

"Good luck with that one".

And then they laugh. How cute !

I think Vivian is an incredibly interesting character because she serves as a contrast for several character : Guinevere, and Arthur.

Let's not forget that she is acting like a spoiled brat, just like Arthur was when he first met Merlin. He's made some progress since then, and we see that in how he reacts to Vivian's behaviour.

Then, Vivian is a contrast to Guinevere : one is spoilt, demanding and arrogant, the other is hardworking, sweet, humble and kind. Two kinds of woman, two kinds of love interest.

"You should have heard what she said to Gwen".

I love these scenes between Arthur and Merlin when they're going about their daily routine, especially when they're in Arthur's bedroom being all domestic. Here, Arthur is dressing for the feast.

He had a hole in his first shirt, created by moths ! It's pretty weird that Merlin doesn't seem to care it would leave a bad impression on the five kings present at the feast. I like to think Merlin is both a bad and an extremely competent servant in his own way. He'll mess with unimportant stuff but will be extremely careful with Arthur's armor and making him look good to other people, especially foreign dignitaries. Well, that's my headcanon.

Merlin truly has no fear, he can just bring up Arthur's love for Gwen like that, out of the blue, when Arthur doesn't want to talk about it and is denying it (even after admitting his feelings about her to Merlin a few episodes ago when they were on their way to rescue Gwen from those bandits).

Arthur's threats can't make Merlin back down. He knows deep down, Arthur won't hurt him. He can keep on teasing him and laugh a bit about it.

"You're blushing !" "No I'm not."

Morgana should always be surrounded with pretty women. This should have been her destiny.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME ? BLUE BUTTERFLIES ? MERLIN'S FAVOURITE MAGIC SPELL ?

How can Alined treat his servant like a total buffoon when he knows he has magic ?

Also while sometimes love potions can make people act stupid and in funny ways on tv, I think we'd laugh way less if this was GHB.

Are the CROWN PRINCE'S CHAMBERS never properly guarded ? I swear ! Fuck ! No wonder prisoners keep escaping, the security in this castle is a vast mess ! And why is Arthur not waking up ? You're a soldier for fuck's sake. The way the guy pops up and down like he came from under the mattress and is going back there... Comical but illogical. Get up and leave, maybe ?

"You're dressed".

Everytime Merlin shows up to Arthur's room in the morning and Arthur is awake, up and dressed, Merlin is surprised.

"Indeed, you are very skilled... at getting people to do things for you." "That is your job".

Merlin is not afraid to spit the truth hahaha.

"I wish to make a proclamation of love".

Arthur you never speak of your feelings so openly. Ever.

Aww I love when Merlin is arranging Arthur's clothes and basically touching him as part of his job.

"Right. What will you tell your father?" "What does my father matter?" "Well, that's one way of approaching things."

"Of course" Merlin replies, and Merlin rolls his eyes, because of course even in love Merlin has to do Arthur's job for him.

Arthur you are clumsy with your feelings and how to express them even under a lovespell, but you still look extremely cute <3

You know what, this is the kind of scene that make me doubt that Merlin is bi and think he might actually be gay, and his short lived affair with Freya was more about compassion and the feeling of finally be with kin, people who understand him, that about attraction and romantic love.

"Flowers ?" "Excellent. Find some. Perhaps you should also send a note". "Brilliant idea". "Something moving. Something... from the heart. Something... You'll think of something".

Arthur relies so much on Merlin omg. I would say that this is because he's enchanted but I think I remember him making Merlin pick flowers to give Gwen in season 5.

OHMYGOD MERLIN THIS IS WHAT YOU WROTE TO GWEN ? You have strong Cyrano powers ! It never ends well. Gosh. And the flowers are in the colours of Gwen's favourite outfits : cream and light purple. Merlin, were you ever to court someone, you would have a VERY strong game. Anyone you would woo would fall under your charm instantly.

Intricate ritual : manhandle your servant as you talk about what you made him do to court the woman you are enchanted to be in love with. Touch him, grab him. And then talk about how beautiful that woman is.

Merlin you're finally picking up on something.

This is the face of someone who realised that :

A) There's something wrong happening with Arthur

B) He fucked up.

Two things to know about Merlin :

He never knocks.

He always has the lamest excuses for being somewhere and they usually involve vermin : moths, woodworms, and now rats.

I love seeing Gwen smile... Her life probably isn't easy, and it shows a nice attention like a bouquet of flowers can change someone's day for the better <3

Haha Merlin trying to get Gaius to help but he can't tell him the specifics because he can't reveal Arthur is actually in love with Gwen ! He's being a good friend.

One of my favourite lines ever from the show.

Help he's so insistent and into the food x)

He's so lucky Merlin arrived when he did! Poor Arthur, his feelings are hurt...

There is no straight explanation for this, Alined.

You know what, this is actually the first time I hear Merlin expressing doubts about Arthur's feelings for Gwen and their relationship.

As I settle into my new place, I'm just starting on decorating and furnishing the place, so I've been picking up some old furniture and beginning to paint, which is great. I'm super excited to have a fully furnished space to work from, but in the meantime it's exciting to work on the process.

I'm still not back into my regular movie-watching vibe as I'm yet to have proper wi-fi in my new place, but I've recently been going between my rewatch of BBC Merlin (always a classic) and also playing Dragon Quest XI, and as for the latter, I recommend it so much. It's such a fun game that, as many of the DQ titles do, plays a lot with and pastiches a lot of classic RPG elements, but it's also so funny and also heartfelt and really loving about its characters, so big recommend.

All right, it’s been a bit since I’ve done one of these. Mostly because there hasn’t been that much to report. I have begun The Librarians TV show, and I’m enjoying it so far. While mostly fun, the movie trilogy was somewhat iffy in places so it is already clearer that the show is better. A while back I did see the first Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century episode, but it was way more dystopian than I remembered so I haven’t kept watching yet.

I’ve been doing a daily BATB post this month; I’ll be shifting to the 1991 movie for a week or so but then I’ll resume reblogging posts about the 2022 special to wrap up the year. Thanks to everyone for putting up with me shoving the same dozen or so posts back into your feed. Because I do love the celebration special a lot; I am not kidding when I say it kicked my BATB affection to new heights. <3

There are daily BBC Merlin Gwen posts scheduled into a chunk of January. After that, either I will go searching for more posts out in the wild (again) or start reblogging from the depths of my blog. Or I’ll rewatch the show for the sole purpose of getting more screencaps of her. Though it’s very possible I’ll do some screencaps of a different Gwencelot pairing from the 1994 movie once I make time to watch it, in addition to the TV show posts.

Over in the Pokémon Masters app, I did obtain two of Emma & Crobat in one pull but unfortunately Professor Sycamore & Gogoat have eluded me. Hopefully there won’t be any sync pairs I really want in January, as my free gem stash is running low.

However, with 2023 wrapping up, I’m debating what else to have in the queue. Since they both were turning 30 this year, I’ve been doing a daily ST DS9 & Power Rangers post. I do want to get back into creating my own posts rather than just reblogging, but I’m not entirely sure what media to do it with.

I won’t promise to adhere to the results, but it’ll be interesting if nothing else to see what you all want me to post about.

2024 Reading Goals & Plans

Welp, I'm late! My ADHD acting up as usual, it seems.

Anyway, I'll be talking about my 2024 plans!

Aaalrighty, the year has started, so let's get right into it!

So basically, I'm doing the 52-a-year challenge (aka, read one VN a week) for all of my reading media (VNs, books, and manga).

I thought about including anime and cinema in general, but it'd be way too much.

Visual Novels

Phew... That's a lot!

I was already reading Umineko back in 2023, but I want to finish it all by the first week of February. Oh, and Little One is one I need to finish as well; it's more of a stats sim, so I'll have to use my brain orz

They are in weekly order, so with exception of Umineko and The Divine Speaker, just think of me reading through them weekly!

Manga

In theory, I'd have read Goodnight Punpun (Vol.1) by now but I haven't been so lucky! I'll try to read through half of it today and the other half tomorrow, but oh well.

Books

Okay, I got lazy and it shows. This grid is a bit different: I'm reading TWO books weekly. One is shorter (less than 300 pages) and the other is a bit longer, but not too long (around 300~400 pages).

You might be asking: but why do they stop midway? Well... I forgot to take into account that I'm reading TWO chonkers this year: Kafka on the Shore and The Old Curiosity Shop. For those two, I'm diving them into weekly quarters. For the rest of the year, I'm reading medium-sized books.

Anime

I haven't made any specific plans for anime... HOWEVER!

I did spend days filling my 2TB HD with all the anime I still want to watch and maybe rewatch. For self-hype, I will list the ones I'd like to (re)watch! 12 picks, one per month.

I watched The Darkest Hour Part 1 for the first time since forever. Didn't right away remember the name of the first episode and I was thinking what was the name of the episode.

And then suddenly out of nowhere I remember the slogan of the whole series 4:

Now... Where the hell did that come from? (In my mind, I mean.)

I guess back in 2011 I was really looking forward to the new series for Merlin (surprise) and just kept seeing the poster and slogan everywhere.

Which is interesting cause I didn't find any poster in my blog. I guess I thought they were too dull to reblog

The knight transformation montage was hilarious. It's like some weird exhibition. " How to make a knight step by step" or something. Arthur's face was gold.

" I can't believe you talk me into this." Little friendship moment. Merlin did go to Gwen for help a lot in the early days. Gwen's too nice a person to refuse Merlin's various weird requests xd.

Merlin's face when he heard that Arthur's cooking was so funny. He had zero confidence. (and he's right)

They were so happy together ~~ I love blue cloak Arthur so much. It's nice that in the end he actually enjoyed being a nameless person in the crowd, cheering with his friends.

The secret smiles in the throne room. Still so young and carefree. Everything is perfect and nothing hurts.

His excuse was actually not that bad XD. He knew a magic beast + a demonstration of knightly behaviour could easily get his father on board. He’s just acting shifty lol. It was good that Uther sat at the far end of the table.

Merlin just couldn't help it xd. He almost knocked over a goblet and Uther just glanced up at him without saying anything. I like this weird tolerance between Merlin and Uther. It's a miracle Uther hadn't gotten rid of Merlin (and Merlin hadn't killed Uther). Why's Merlin serving Uther dinner though? He didn't even have a personal servant?

My favourite. Their silent communication was so cute. Everything was in their faces. A simple and effective show of how much they knew each other and how comfortable they were of being friends. And being young. It's always fun when they were being sneaky in front of Uther (or Gaius). I love Merlin's happy grin at the end! He enjoyed it so much.

Also, why did Arthur have to look like this eating some fruits? I'm dying. 🫠

Arthur x Gwen

I have my issue with the way their romance was portrayed but there were a lot of good scenes in this episode. Arthur and Gwen looked insanely gorgeous. Especially Gwen.

The awkward "good night" between them was quite cute. Arthur was trying to be a decent human being. Gwen was probably still wondering why she got herself into this mess. Perhaps they also suddenly remembered the fact that they were staying with the person they had interest in.

" Would it kill you to say please and thank you once in a while?" (which Arthur didn't learn at all...).

I love how calm Arthur was through the whole thing. He didn't raise his voice once. His tone at first could be interpreted as a little threatening, but it was still soft. I like that he asked twice if Gwen had anything else to say. He actually wanted to know. And he admitted his fault instantly. (He went into the wrong way afterwards but he was trying...)

Unlike Merlin, Gwen actually understood the possible outcome of defying royalty. She was scared when she scolded Arthur. But Arthur proved it again that he wouldn't force Gwen's obedience and respect.

This is how she could admit that she wanted to make Arthur feel bad a little with a tentative smile. She was more certain now that she could say what she want in front of Arthur. They had status differences but they could still stand on equal footing. It's lovely. (Also the way Bradley said " Oh really" was so funny xd love him)

Then at dinner Gwen could jibe him lightheartedly and smiled at Arthur's indignant response. They're so cute.

The first kiss!!

It was so gorgeous. I was still mad that Arthur ordered Merlin to get a mattress the scene before and frankly the kiss was a bit impromptu. But the kiss itself was too perfect I can't complain.

Merlin rewatch -- S1E4: The Poisoned Chalice

Merlin & Arthur end scene

This scene is the reason I love this episode so much.

It started with Arthur casually dropping by the infirmary. I liked that small smile when he spotted Merlin not dying on the bed but sitting upright and eating. He then noticed Gaius and gave him a little nod. Good kid. (Also that short brown jacket suited him so well!)

Another gorgeous shot with them looking into each other's eyes ~ A hint of teasing was still in Arthur's voice when he said " Still alive then." but his expression and his movement were very gentle. Then he just turned all honest and soft. When he reminded Merlin to work the next day there was none of the usual demanding tone even though he bulged his eyes and try to look threatening.

I also liked that he played down his attribution in this save-Merlin mission, just like he didn't brag about his heroic deed to Morgana earlier. " A half-decent servant is hard to come by," he said. Just a roundabout way to praise Merlin's courage. He probably didn't think his achievement was nearly as brave as Merlin's. Merlin was an incompetent servant yet was willing to drink poison for him. Whereas Arthur had all the skills he needed for the quest and only survived because of an unknown sorcerer's help.

Merlin didn't think that, of course, so he called Arthur back and they had this gorgeous exchange.

The lines were so simple yet conveyed so much. It might be the first time they truly stood on equal ground. They were always casual with each other of course, but it felt like a new level. Before, it was "a brave, funny peasant" or " a prat but good-hearted prince". Now, they were two persons who were willing to risk their lives for one another, despite the restriction of their respective rank, and they recognised this shift in their relationship in this short exchange! Beautiful, beautiful scene.

One thing I like about Bradley James is that he played comedy very straight. It always felt natural and in character. Not that other actors were out of character, but Bradley was particularly... consistent? He didn't have different "modes", serious, mature, comical, silly,… He changed his acting style more subtly and everything was very organic. I also like the way he delivered the lines. (I have a strong preference in this matter) Never too over the top even if the scene is dramatic. Whether it’s a emotional or comical scene, never once did I feel weird when listening to him.
