I love angel so much ahhh!! She’s so funny pls.
Can we get more of her smart era? She’s book smart right? She acts so dumb at times (I say lovingly) that it kind of catches them off guard when she just says something so smart or they see her exam results and she’s averaging 100% lol
pls imagine there’s an issue w one of their cars and they can’t figure it out, everyone is tense and snippy and after an hour she’s just like “well have you guys checked this yet?” and the engineers are all too nice to say anything ab how she doesn’t know anything ab cars so they just check it out to please her but then that’s actually the issue and it’s a total legally blonde moment where they’re asking how she knew what was wrong and she’s just like “what? like it’s hard? it was making a weird sound and i could hear it while he was lapping during practice. y’all didn’t notice?”
people not knowing she’s in school at all because she’s traveling with the boyfriends and taking online courses. they all assume she’s online shopping or reading fashion articles when she’s working her laptop during race weekends, but then she aces all her exams and oscar and lando throw her a party to celebrate her spring semester ending and everyone is like wait what do you mean she’s in university?? and then they found out she’s first in her class and they’re asking what she does and she’d try to explain what she’s studying but they have no fucking clue what she’s talking about because it’s something crazy like molecular biology or astrophysics.

I hope these questions don't annoy you, but whats it like working in a lab?
I'm considering the same career path cause I really like my lab classes so far
Not annoying! from what ive seen there are 3 or so types of labs, which are labs in the hospital, which are obviously a faster pace (did half of my preceptorship in one), reference labs, which get a fairly high volume since they're doing testing everybody's sending out for (did other half of my preceptorship in one), and privately owned labs which pick up samples from clinics urgent cares nursing homes etc (both of my jobs have been with private labs).
I like it! It's very routine. I have my set of tasks i do when i clock in and my set of tasks i do at the end of the night and in between I'm just sticking samples on the machines and releasing results. and there is imo enough variation to it to keep it interesting - troubleshooting failed qc, or double checking criticals, or having to do manual difs. if you're liking undergrad lab work I'm assuming you're doing stuff like pcr and gels and micro plates? which is a lot of what molecular departments do in a lab besides micro which is micro. I currently work in the core portion of a lab, which is hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and chemistry. You really only break out the microscope for urinalysis and hem. we have a micro department that handles all the cultures, and a molecular department that does molecular testing. lots of labs have small micro factions and do lots of micro send out instead. the last lab i worked at did that. the hospital i did my preceptorship at would do plating, but then send all the plates out to be read and send out all the blood culture tubes to be cultured elsewhere. the lab I'm currently at does most cultures in house.
re: education to work in a lab you have to be ASCP certified. After I got my biology degree, I enrolled in texas tech's CLS certification program, which was 3 semesters of classes (preceptorships were the majority of the coursework the last semester). I didn't mind doing it because I was a fresh graduate and I didn't want to Career Hunt or go to grad school. so 3 sems to get a guaranteed job sounded great to me. Since I had my bio degree, I had most of the baseline credits out of the way. chem biochem ochem cell bio genetics etc etc. And the 3 sems I did were lab specific courses like blood banking, clinical chemistry, molecular methods, immunology, phlebotomy, lab management, clinical micro and hematology. there are tons of post bachelor's cls programs, and tons of them are delivered online so that you can chip away at it part time while working.
A nice thing about it is that you can get work literally anywhere. I moved to a town with a population of 90k. Applied for 3 jobs as a brand new graduate. and got 3 offer letters. the payscale's pretty variable, depending on where you are, but it is nice to know that i'm certified in like. 47 states and could get some sort of job in any of them no problem. i think once you've been certified a year you can get cali state certification, which is the route a lot of people go since cali is on the high end of the pay scale. it'll depend on what the lab you're at is like, obviously, but it is pretty difficult to get day shift positions since what a lot of places do is open internal applications for any night/evening shift people who want to move up. I work an evening shift of 2pm to 11pm and i really like it. A very common complaint i see is that there's no like... career ladder. if you're a bench tech. you're a bench tech. which sometimes gets parlayed into section leader, or section manager, but that's a years of experience thing.
My plan is to work in the same place for a couple of years so I feel more experienced, and then to take a few travel contracts which are shorter term higher pay. again, they're available pretty much anywhere, but sometimes the tradeoff is lower compensation or a worse shift or being in the middle of nowhere america. but i think it'll be fun to get paid to bop around the country for awhile. I like my job and I like that it's very secure, but I do plan to go back to school for Something Else at some point and probably shift careers. My review: good thing to do in your twenties! good thing to have under your belt in general. very dependable.
if you have other questions in general or about anything I said you can 100% msg me! Ik I had a lot of trouble finding info when I was looking into this as an undergrad

hey!! sorry if this ask is random, (ive sent you an ask before, but idk if you remember :P) i just wanted to ask about biomed as a subject in uni since im planning on pursuing it too!!
what kinds of things do you learn?? (the course syllabus is so vague. so vague) like i see topics like musculoskeletal system and chemical biomed but what EXACTLY goes in it?
any textbooks/resources that you’d recommend?? every college recommends like 10 books of their own and there’s so many online but which ones are actually useful??
on that note, any place i can get secondhand textbooks from??
some tips you absolutely HAVE to know as a biomed student?
if you’ve reached there, how do you plan for a dissertation/thesis paper? Just an outline of the steps if you could :D
thanks so much for your time and support and hope you have a great day/night!!
Hi!! unfortunately tely I have the memory of a fish unless you're in my face all the time, so I dont remember you but you are always welcome in my inbox regardless!!
there quite a lot to unpack in this so I might make it into several posts for the sake of length but I'll tag you in each part!
what kinds of things do you learn?? (the course syllabus is so vague. so vague) like i see topics like musculoskeletal system and chemical biomed but what EXACTLY goes in it?
this is a good question, biomed is an incredibly broad degree when it comes to science, which is what makes biomed graduates desirable in loads of different fields. I can give you a quick breakdown of the variety of modules I did over the years to show you how!!
Anatomy and physiology :
Does what it says on the tin, we looked at different parts of the anatomy more specifically different organs systems and looked at their normal functions in a healthy person as well as possible pathologies/diseases of the systems eg different lung diseases when we did respiratory systems etc. the diseases ranged from those that can be inherited to those that you develop due to lifestyle or those caught by pathogens so it covered a huge amount.
Research skills / lab skills:
The greatest opportunity you will get to play with lab equipment. The professors will set up series of investigations you can do so you can get a feel for how different equipment in the lab works since university will have a lot more specialist equipment than you’re used to - this will definitely come in hand if you take on a practical dissertation project as it will build your confidence with the machines!
Biochemistry :
A lot of people on my course found this the hardest of all the modules we studied, since it has a lot more chemistry compared to the rest of the course which is heavily biology focused. In biomchem we looks at molecular structures and thier interactions with each other, biological molecules like water, glucose, lipids etc, to understand why these chemicals have certain properties and how the human body is adapted to utilise them.
Cell biology:
Another straight forward one - where anatomy and physiology looked at organs and organ systems, cell biology is focused on the function of individual cells and how they’re adapted to their functions. There’s a lot more details to the internal structure of the cell and how they join together and communicate etc
As the years go on the modules will split into more specialised subjects but still build on the more basic ones I explained above:
Tissue science /histology / histopathology :
Like cell biology, you study cells and tissues, but you also look at diseases - this includes things like cancer and the physical changes that cells undergo as they become tumours and you look at the grading /staging system for cancers. You also look at a lot of autoimmune disorders - diseases where the body is attacking itself - and see how that effects tissue structure. You are likely to get lab sessions looking at diseased tissues.
Infection science / immunity :
All diseases under the sun, with a bit of a heavier focus on those you get from pathogens. You’ll look at several examples for each type, viral, bacterial, fungal etc and look at the effect they have on tissues, organs and the person as a whole - you are likely to get case studies where they tell you the patients symptoms and some test results and ask for a possible diagnosis. A lot of time spent looking at the immune system in more detail - there is always more detail
Medicinal chemistry :
This topic was all about the body and drug interactions so this is where doing biochemistry really helped as we looked at functional groups on drugs and how some were more or less suited for the compound etc. we looked at the process of clinical trials, formulation of drugs, played around with exploring their 3D structure with cool software - very different from the other topics but just as interesting for sure
Blood science / haematology:
Probably one of my favourites because my professor was amazing but it is exactly what it says. We study the blood from how the cells form (including red and white blood cells) disorders of the blood like sickle cell, leukaemia etc, how the shape of cells is affected by the different diseases etc etc. we also spend a lot of time looking at blood testing and lab results since a lot of people in biomed will go on to work in hospital labs - this is one of the more relevant topics towards career progression if you want to avoid further studies. Because we look at lab reports you’ll also get a fair amount of case studies in this topic too.
Medical genetics :
I took this as an optional module so you may not (or at least not go into as much detail) on this but medical genetics was spent looking at DNA and chromosomes and how inherited disorders can arise as well as the importance of coding and non-coding regions of DNA and gene therapy
Parasitology:
Another optional module, but covered briefly in infection science, it goes into parasites in a lot more detail - this different types, how they spread, where they spread, the symptoms, the treatment etc - not for the faint of heart there are many a picture of worms in places where there shouldn’t be worms that are permanently seared into my brain
Overall the modules are broad but there is definite overlap between each one and things you learn in one module you may come across in another. All of them were very interesting and you may study them across multiple years (but it would be the advanced syllabus the following year) so your knowledge on it will become well rounded as it gradually builds.
This is pretty long so I’ll answer your thesis and textbook questions in a second post today! I hope this helped and feel free to ask more questions if you like.

BSc Biomed part 2
this is in response to this ask here.  From @multifaceted-musings
any textbooks/resources that you’d recommend?? every college recommends like 10 books of their own and there’s so many online but which ones are actually useful?? on that note, any place i can get secondhand textbooks from??
we didnt have any required reading for our course, which you’ll find is true in many science degrees but there were definitely some crowd favourites that I recommend.
for starters, places to get cheap/free books:
b-ok.org - also known as z libraries
you can download pdf versions of pretty much all textbooks you can think of for free - if you make an account you can do 10 downloads in a day.
if you want cheap physical copies, i used alibris but be warned that it tends to be older editions as its second hand textbooks, but the science is just as good. I got 6 textbooks for £30 where the original retail value of them would have been upwards of £500.
recommendations:
Dacie and Lewis practical haematology textbook (found on z library) - excellent for finding protocols and methods for a huge variety of experiments.
clinical biochemistry by Nessar Ahmed (z-library)
Manual of laboratory and diagnostic tests by Denise D Wilson (z-library) - good for reference ranges needed for lab reports and also gives the reason for the test and possible causes of high and low values - includes blood test results and urine test results.
molecular biology of cancer - Lauren Pecorino - she guest lectured for us and was amazing, I love her textbook
anything by Nessar Ahmed (they do the whole oxford range of textbooks)
if you have to use SPSS, any manual or guide that has pictures is going to be your greatest ally
all textbooks are useful in a science degree and you will find yourself scouring tons of them for information, and its fine if its an obscure textbook you found on a deep dive translated from the a different countries medical journal, as long as its legit its all good.
your university log in details will also get you access to a number of websites so you can read journals more recently published on spaces like Elselvier which is a big publisher of all things science. Talk to your librarians about what kind of access you have to these online databases. I found that some journals were still restricted but putting them into z-library or sci-hub will usually get you free access!
