headcannon that when ast was pregnant for zephyr hiccup was so excited and nervous that he hardly could sleep, so he just, talked with zephyr still in the belly. For hours and hours ab literally everything, like, how was his day, what he did as a chief that day or week, how he loved his wife, how he missed toothless, ideas for future projects, literally EVERYTHING and with details. and every time he talked to zeph he calmed down enough to fall in a completely peaceful sleep without even finishing his own sentences.

all while astrid was sleeping. and she never really had a chance to see the moment because she was always asleep, (i also headcannon that she was pretty sleepy during zeph's pregnancy) until one day she ended up waking during one conversation and found it just so freaking cute that she decided to pretend to be asleep to hear it, and i'm absolutely sure she just fell in love with him all again at the moment

Astrid woke suddenly to the cries of her youngest child, immediately resulting in her stumbling out of bed towards the sound. As she threw open the bedroom door, she was greeted with the sight of Nuffink sitting on his bed, wide awake with tears running down his little face. “Nuffink?” she asked with concern, coming to perch on the side of his bed and pulling him into a hug. “What’s wrong?”

Next to them, Zephyr was sitting up in her own bed, rubbing at her eyes. “He woke up saying that he was scared.”

Astrid looked down at Nuffink, whose tear-stained face was pressed against her chest, wetting the fabric of her night tunic. “Is that true, Nuffink?” The little boy nodded. “What are you scared of, sweetheart?” She began stroking his scruffy blonde hair to comfort him.

Nuffink pulled back slightly to stare up at her with his big, green eyes that were identical to his father’s, his bottom lip jutted out. “I miss daddy. I dreamt that he disappeared and I got scared.”

Astrid blinked with surprise. “Daddy will be back soon, don’t worry. He has just gone to visit Uncle Dagur and then he will be sailing right back. He might even be here tomorrow.”

At that, Nuffink sniffled. “Really? So he will be coming back soon?”

Astrid nodded. “He will be. It was just a nightmare, okay.”

A relieved smile replaced the look of sadness on Nuffink’s face and he held on to her tightly. “Okay, mama.” She rocked him for a few moments, before maneuvering to put him back into his bed when he gripped onto her shoulders. “Mama, can I sleep in your bed with you? Please?”

Astrid paused. Normally they didn’t allow the children to sleep in their bed. The last few times had resulted in them taking up most of the room, a foot in Astrid’s face and Hiccup literally being pushed out of bed. But then again it was just a once off and the fact that Hiccup was not there meant that there would be more room. She thought for a moment before nodding, deciding that if it would help Nuffink sleep better then it was probably worth it. Behind her Zephyr sat up again, doing an excited little jiggle. “Me, too?”

With a playful roll of her eyes, Astrid nodded again, giving her daughter an amused look when she started bouncing with glee. She pulled Nuffink into her arms, holding him on her front while backing up towards Zephyr so the little girl could jump on her back, clinging on to her shoulders tightly. Juggling the two Haddock children that were attached to her, Astrid stumbled back towards her bed, dumping them both on top of it and causing them both to giggle.

“All right, you two. Under the covers and no wriggling around. It’s time to sleep, not play.”

The two children immediately quietened down and snuggled up to her, listening intently to the lullaby she was humming. It wasn’t long until their breathing slowed, accompanied by the occasional muscle twitch which indicated that they were both now fast asleep, thankfully. Astrid joined them soon after, unbeknown to what they would all be waking up to later that morning.

Astrid awoke to the familiar feeling of long, slender arms wrapping around her, making her eyes flutter open. Nuffink and Zephyr were also waking up, rubbing at their eyes before settling on their father. “Daddy!” they cried, leaping over Astrid in a flurry of limbs. He laughed, catching the two children and pulling them off Astrid to hug them both tightly.

“Hey kiddo’s. You con mama into letting you guys sleep in the bed, huh?” he asked amusedly.

They nodded, looking very pleased with themselves as they tried to talk over each other, telling their father all about what they’d been doing during his absence. Hiccup chuckled, before looking down at Astrid and giving her a soft smile which she returned.

“I’m glad you are back,” she told him truthfully.

“Me, too,” he replied softly.

I headcanon this is why Nuffink keeps banging his head for no reason :D And after a while Astrid gets so used to it because he never stopped, so she no longer comments when he does it again. But in the beginning she was really furious with Tuffnut :^D
