#most libraries are public

Near the place I currently live there is this small library run by this guy who will let you borrow book with no late fees or anything. He has been running it for ten years thanks to donations and also he sells tiny cactuses. He also teaches math and physics for free. Like people here love him. He graduated top of his class in college and now he’s just running a library and teaches people and takes care of plants and I’m reminded that some people are just good because they’re.

A state senator in the district where I work has co-sponsored a bill requiring public libraries in my state to automatically provide a list of all materials checked out by patrons age 16 and under to their parents within 24 hours of checkout. Hopefully the bill dies in committee. Barring that, I hope our governor vetoes it as soon as it reaches his desk.
I cannot even begin to tell you how asinine this bill is. How dangerous this bill is.
"But parents have a right to know what their kids are checking out of the library."
Sure, maybe you do. I don't give a fuck about your rights as a parent. The issue is whether I, as a public librarian, who follows a professional code of ethics, is under any obligation to provide that information to you. Your rights as a parent are not my concern. I don't answer to you. Your children aren't some half-witted partial-people -- they're either patrons or they aren't. And if they are, they have a right to privacy in the public library.
I'm not your ally in conducting surveillance over your child. It's not my job to make it easier for you to gather intel about your kids. That's called parenting, dude.
A child who knows their parent will be emailed a list of the materials they check out is not experiencing free, unfettered access to information. Full stop. Please pause for a moment and consider the dire consequences of this requirement.
If you want to bring your child to the library and monitor their checkouts, I won't get in your way. But, between you and me, the best thing you can do for your child is to bring them to the library and let them discover it on their own. Get out of their way. Let them browse and investigate and check out a million books and read only one of them twelve times in a row. Let them roam the shelves like they are starving and the books are food.
Stop telling them which books to read or not read. Stop sneering when they select a book from the shelf and deem it "too easy" for them, or "too difficult." If your kid is enthusiastic about an author or a series or a topic, rejoice! Enthusiastic people are the best people!
Let your toddlers pull a dozen books off the shelf -- don't worry, we pay people to put them back. Let them wander with reckless abandon. Let them make noise. We made this space for them. It's theirs. Nothing in the library can hurt them except your undeserved sense of self-importance and your prejudices. We made this space for them. Please get out of the way and let them discover it.

I dont think most of the islands would have internet connection, or at least not widely available or easily accessible. 4 year old tails not knowing much about the internet or caring about it until he and sonic end up on the mainlands and in a public library and he discovers the Joy of Internet. whole new world has opened up baby and he is tapping away at that keyboard

Dear grantees who want to work with a public library:
We don't need to know the history of your project.
We don't need to hear about "liberatory spaces" or the "coloniality of learning".
We certainly don't need to hear about "feminisms" (are there more than one?), "methods of survivance" (why not "survival"?), or "intersectional positionality in the world" ("positionality"? Are you ok?).
We need to hear about what people will actually be DOING at the event you are proposing to hold at the library.
xoxo
A librarian
PS: Please do yourself a favor and touch grass.

No I actually hate people who say that “libraries are useless,” “no one uses libraries anymore,” and “libraries should be defunded!” Many communities, especially communities with a lot of poverty (most places) would be severely damaged if their public library shut down.
I could write an entire essay about how much communities rely on their libraries, and it still wouldn’t be enough to describe how helpful they are. Also, I started working at a library, so I know how untrue the “no one uses libraries anymore!” argument is, which is also anti-intellectual.
My job is still fucking hard, but this is the only job I’ve had where I’m not severely underpaid. This is also the only job I’ve had where I’m not treated like absolute garbage. When people say shit like this, it’s basically saying that countless people who work in libraries should lose their jobs.

thinking about how our librarian gal probably has to wear clear retainers for her piercings because yknow..working with kids means dealing with parents complaints and dress code yadda yadda yadda which means the first time you and Benjamin go out on a date or bump into eachother outside of work you have your real piercings in and he almost has a heart attack because you look so hot

interesting how the internet archive has the eagle of the ninth as a tv series from the seventies and as a radio program from 2010 and as the full text of the book in FRENCH... but not the original book :(

i really like crimson peak by the way! i don’t enjoy horror, i sometimes get scared just by reading wikipedia summaries of horror movies, but i went to see it in cinemas (alone!) because i love del toro, so i was actually relieved that it turned out to not be a horror. i definitely found it really scary though
That is entirely fair, and I'm glad you like it!
I like some things that fall more clearly under the general Horror umbrella- Mama (2013) comes to mind, if we're focusing on Del Toro, and about half of Cabinet of Curiosities -but I, too, am more likely to see a Gothic than a straight horror movie.
I almost didn't see CPeak- I'm not usually aware of coming attractions unless they breach containment onto my Tumblr dash, because I don't go to the movies often and thus miss a lot of trailers. But some friends saw it and said, "no, you NEED this in your life," so...I went! Alone, just like you. I actually remember the theatre (AMC Times Square) because of its gorgeous old domed ceiling covered in murals.
I also remember leaving afterwards and feeling like I just got hit by a bus full of Seen(TM).
It was a good day.

Interesting. Fresno County Library is just...without a library app for now.
From the article linked:
"The San Joaquin Valley Library System alerted patrons on its social media stating that due to a disagreement between its primary library software provider and a third-party contractor, who they say provided components for the ValleyCat mobile app, the software is now offline.
"As a result, it says the developer is working to create its own app."
So now, that patrons are back to using the library website, at a time when more of us than ever are using mobile devices and tablets.
I wonder if we'll see more of this in the future.

Re: Dykes to Watch Out For, you should absolutely not check out Anna's Archive ;)
I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but they have several options that may be it?
I definitely didn't recover my zlib link and just downloaded it (eyes emoji)

I love finding things other peoples used as bookmarks in library books. An old receipt, a peice of a cereal box, a scrap peice of math homework. Most recently i found a peice of packaging from a pack of socks. Its so sweet like... Why didnt you finish the book? Look how far you got. Look at this random person ill never know, leaving a little present for the next person. For me. I hope you enjoy the next book friend

Gott Fucking Damn It! i think i found a solution to my 'adhd brain refuses to read' problem and the answer was fucking libraries!
hear me out. this is what ive got thus far for my brain's issues and how it helps:
Can't read because theres no urgency and time isnt real? Return date is a free deadline
Can't be a true deadline without consequences? Well the nice librarian will certainly be disappointed if its late, bonus if theres a wait list and other people want to read it
Trouble with impulse buying books you might want to read but are unsure? Library is free, you can impulse take out the book and return it if its not for you
Can't do stuff without a space transition to say you should do the thing? Gotta Physically go there so you have time to shift tasks
Space too noisy? Not wanting people bugging you? Need a weird corner to vibe in? Library social code has you covered
go to your local library! At least see if it works for you
