giving pokemon teams to d20 characters!

hello chat and welcome to aloe shoves their hyperfixation onto everything they enjoy! making pokemon teams for fictional characters has always been a fun past time for me that i enjoy greatly so i wanted to apply that to dimension 20! i plan on doing every season once i’ve watched it, starting with all the intrepid hero seasons before moving on to side quest seasons

(also i finally decided to post these after @jadelion made posts sharing their team picks, so go check those posts out as there are some great choices! i also wouldnt be inspired to finally post these without him doing so first! i made my list completely independent of hers so if there's the same pokemon its purely coincidental lol)

first i want to talk about some guidelines i’ve given myself for this, which will apply to future posts as well:

only 4 pokemon per team - this keeps things more easy and makes them feel closer to mid-game trainers rather than fully stacked end-game ones. or feel like gym leaders maybe? it also helps with rule 2…

try to have no repeat pokemon - this just keeps things unique between seasons but sometimes a pokemon is a perfect fit for more than one person but for the most part everyone gets unqiue pokemon and there are almost no doubles

low to no legendaries on teams unless for a good reason - same goes for shinies but im more lenient on the shiny rule lol

i made a lot of these these like 3 months ago as of posting this - some choices may be outdated or the character has changed enough that a choice may not fit as well but i didnt want to change it lol (this is solely for the fantasy high kids tbh)

Lycanroc - representing Tracker, again i made these before junior year so trackerbees was still a thing but i imagine it can count for cassandra also since it’s a night themed pokemon. don't know which form of lycanroc she would have though Solrock - she was given solrock during her time with Helio, and while i know sunflora exists i think solrock makes a little more sense, since she was a chosen of Helio she would be at an elevated status and therefor have a better pokemon if that makes sense? it also pairs with... Lunatone - representing her change to Cassandra, a goddess of night. there's like cool symbolism with her pokemon now wow isn't that so cool and awesome!! Unown ("?") - a question mark unown to represent Yes? (and the other Yes forms) along with her cool question mark staff! can also ALSO symbolize doubt with cassandra

Fig

Toxitricity (Low Key) - low key form gives the vibes of a bass and Fig plays the bass! toxitricity would help fig practice her instrument and come up with music. also literally called “the punk pokemon”

Obstagoon - similar reasoning, obstagoon has The Vibes that fit along with also being a sort of rock n roll pokemon

Moltres - representing Ayda, i imagine Ayda gifted it to her once they became girlfriends :)

Mimikyu - a pokemon known for its imitation of another pokemon, very much fits into Fig’s actor feat and her high deception and her not wanting to be her real self sometimes

Fabian

Dhelmise - big connection to his father and being a pirate, his father probably gifted it to him as his first pokemon

Marowak (Alolan) - fun idea i had for this is he originally just had a cubone with him during freshman year, but once he went to Fallinel and learned about the power of dance it evolved into an alolan marowak! it's a fire dance pokemon of course he would have it lol

Sirfetch'd - representing his mother and also his general fencing/fighter style that he works with

Tentacruel - just a cool ass water pokemon i feel he would have, also vaguely pirate-y with big kraken vibes

Riz

Pikachu - detective pikachu go brrrrr i imagine he would have gotten a pichu when very young, and it's evolved over time! it would wear a tiny detective hat as well because um i said so

Inteleon - super spy/gun pokemon also go brrrr, very much a reference to his father and just the general super spy-ness of Riz and Pok in junior year especially

Togekiss - ok this one feels very out of place and i forgot why it was here originally BUT i think it's to represent like a guardian angel sort of? again another reference to Pok because i love Pok and think he's very cool

Voltorb - he's the ball. this is a pokeball pokemon. are we starting to connect the dots

Adaine

Politoad - representing Boggy of course, nothing much else to say

Espeon - a very psychic pokemon representing her oracle powers, it would be fun to think that she had an eevee that simply evolved into an espeon once Adaine realized that she in fact was the elven oracle!

Delphox - another powerful psychic pokemon, again this is just vibes and it's a cool pokemon and adaine is a very cool character lol

Audino - these pokemon are known for being able to hear super well and know how their trainers are feeling from listening to their heartbeat. a gift given by Jawbone to help with Adaine's anxiety but still a good member of her team regardless

Gorgug

Archen - "i'm Cloaca, i suck!"

Gogoat - a grassy pokemon which can sorta represent the tree he lives in but also intended to represent Zelda in some ways (again i wrote these before junior year came out). it would help him carry around a lot of scraps for tinkering

Rotom - found in the village near the Nightmare King's forest, this rotom had gotten lost in the forest and, with no tech from solace nearby, couldn't find a way home. gorgug rescued it and lets it inhabit the Hangvan a lot

Rillaboom - another grassy pokemon but this one is also a drummer! can we take a wild guess as to why i picked this one. for it's drumming ability. because. because gorgug is a drummer.

have a better option that would fit a PC better? please tell me i would love to hear everyone's takes on this!

Libra Placement Observations

(This picture doesn't belong to me in any way) (These may apply to 7th house placements too. Please tell me if it does)

Libra Sun:

~I've said it before and I'll say it again. Libra Sun is the least worst debilitated placement amongst all other debilitations. Okay, don't thrash me in the comments just yet. Hear my explanation out first.

Imagine looking at the sun. You can't, right? Exactly. It's too bright for your eyes. Sun is exalted in Aries, meaning, it is the brightest in that particular sign BUT Sun is debilitated in Libra, meaning, it can't shine as bright and is rather dull than all other signs, i.e., it is easier to look at. It doesn't hurt your eyes, it's rather pleasing to your eyes than when Sun is in other signs.

This is why manyyyyyy celebrities or even the popular kids at school generally have Libra Sun (Strictly Sidereal). They are pleasing to look at, a soothing balm to your eyes.

~Libra Sun people are ✨gifted✨ when it comes to Art. Any sort of art: Dance, Music, Painting. Generally, I've noticed them to be good in painting but yes, some art form. They have a knack for it.

~Libra Sun people are very diplomatic? Balanced? They are allergic to conflicts? I mean, they do stand up whenever required, and are not scared of bitch slapping someone. When I say they hate conflict, I mean they are the people least likely to start a conflict out of boredom or start ruckus. Well, at least not deliberately. Haha. (unless there is an aspect of Rahu/Mars on it)

~And why the hell are Libra Sun people sooooo prettyyyy. Like, every time I meet a pretty girl, she's mostly a Libra or Leo something. Popular, Pretty.

~Libra Sun gives me Elena Gilbert vibes from The Vampire Diaries. The way she actually gives selfless vibes but everything ends up revolving around her. The way it feels like she wants to give up for others but everybody ended up giving up their everything for her.

~Since Sun represents our ego, Sun being in Libra, in the sign of its enemy Venus, we could say that a person might face with a lot of bruises on their ego since Sun, the king, is now a mellow, soft person. Sun has lowered down, it's at its lowest. A sunset. Meaning, your partnerships, friends, maybe romantic partners might bruise your ego in some way.

After all, it is a debilitation for some reason. The adversities are going to be there. Oh and why the bruising ego? This is because Libra Sun people have high, and I mean HIGH, tendencies to look for validation elsewhere.

They don't feel enough if they don't receive this validation from either their peers or their loved ones. It's what keeps them going. Like a response that this is the right way, that 'their' way is the right way.

As a result, I'd suggest, not confirm, not declare, SUGGEST that these people may suffer from self esteem issues, maybe in their formative years. That is why certain Libra Sun people may have a reputation of 'pick me' because they crave validation and, erhm, they may go to quite some extents to receive that.

For example, Dan Humphrey from Gossip Girl. The poster kid for Libra Sun. Validation= creating Gossip Girl. Going to any extent= putting up just anything on there for everyone to see for the sake of I don't even know what.

But like I said, this may happen just in the formative years. They grow more mature with time since Malefic planets (like Sun) improve as time passes.

Libra Moon:

~Well, Libra Moon: An easy aspect since Moon feels comfortable in under the rulership of Venus, making the influence of Venus on Moon or the mind very apparent as these people love "love". Ah, what I mean to say is they love the idea of love, not just romantic but also platonic, or harmonious.

~One thing you will find common in every Libra placement is the concept of harmony, peace, love and balance. Some might say that there's justice also but that's a concurrent theme of Aries people too so, I won't talk about it here. (though I will wherever necessary)

~Ah, well. Libra Moon people are excellent mediators or middlemen. I can guarantee that without no doubt. You guys can actually be the "break the ice" dude in you friend circle. Or the "mom" of the group. Not even kidding. Like, I can BET on this one.

I mean, one person who can actually survive a trio is a Libra Moon person. Trios break like crazy quick but Libra Moon person, they'd be like "Hold my cup and you two? Sit." They'd resolve the conflict so swiftly, I'm like "mommy, where were you my whole life?"

~Well, I don't know if it's even an observation but you don't want a casual relationship much, that just bores you. You want a love whose presence makes your heart thump out of your body, who shallows your breathe, who makes goosebumps trail your skin with their touch.

Basically, these people aren't too prone to be playboys/playgirls. They like passion or they'd be much happier being single. If they feel they don't love someone, they'd leave that person because according to them, what's the point of a relationship with no love. "I'd rather be single and sad than tilly-tally with some guy who doesn't make my heart race."

~It's like, their life is on an auto-pilot and they enjoy life being that way. Relaxed. Not obsessing over and wanting to exert their control on people/situations. Just going with the flow, as long as no one oversteps the boundaries Libra Moon person has drawn, they pretty much love their peace.

~Why do Libra Moon people have a thing for Aries placements?

~Also an advice, don't make the perfect image you've drawn of yourself in your head screw with the real person you are. I know you want to be the most aesthetically pleasing person or the prettiest girl ever or the most charming guy ever, but if you take these wishes too personally to your heart, you'll create a disharmonious whirlpool in your head which will suck your peace in and leave you scarred.

Libra Mercury:

~I guess you know by now what I am going to say about this placement. haha.

~I'll start with an example before I start rambling about you guys. Oh and if you want me to change my style of writing observations, do let me know so I can keep writing the way I do. haha. (Cardi B vibes)

~Okay so, when I say Libra Mercury, I picture a period drama with corset-wearing women who speak with great calmness, soothingness and elegance. Someone without a single rude nerve on their tongue.

Like when we say that certain person's voice just brings peace to my heart, for me or according to me, they classify as Libra Mercury.

~But, if I put my picture of Libra Mercury in today's generation, I'd say maybe scratch out the elegance part. I mean, I don't wanna stereotype. Women or people, they cuss. Everybody these days cusses but I'd, umm, maybe word it this way.

You probably won't hear a Libra Mercury person cussing out in a way which would make the angels cry. I just maybe don't want to picture that but I don't know. Maybe I'm biased. (Let me know if I am)

~Balancing act is 2nd nature of any Libra placement. Great lawyers, diplomats, counsellors, basically people working in dispute solving scenarios, such cases, Libra Mercurians have quite an advantage to be very honest. They know how to say the toughest of things in the most neutral syntax ever.

Ever heard Anna Hathaway talk? She's a Sidereal Libra Mercury and goodness does that woman calm my very existence. The mannerism, the tone she addresses people with. Sheer elegance.

Like, they aren't very direct with their speech, the way diplomats aren't. They'll convey their point across with such subtlety that would leave their message loud and clear and yet amazed at how they worded it so gracefully.

~Back to the balancing act, I guess Libra Mercury people wouldn't prefer a partner who is very harsh spoken. They, again, love harmonious speech. Balance. Don't underdo or overdo. They won't obsessively message you, like spam you, but they won't either ghost you off too. Just like the scales. Balanced.

~And, somehow, they always end up saying the most pleasing things. They can lie too due to their people pleasing tendencies if the mercury is afflicted. Like, the sweet talkers. The people who 'talk' their way to the top. Reminds me of a certain Libra Mercury. Any guesses?

Kim Kardashian. Yes, she's a Libra Mercury and yes, she definitely seems like a sweet talker to me. Ever noticed how her voice is a little higher pitched than her sisters? It's the influence of Venus on Mercury as being in Libra. Venus is a feminine planet.

But, it's different than Taurus Mercury, mind you. Taurus Mercury have a low pitched yet soft voice. Libra Mercurians could have a high pitched voice.

Take for example:

Zendaya. She's a Libra Mercury baby. Excellent voice. Ever heard her high notes? Superb. And then take. Adele. She's a Taurus Mercury. Oh god, I just loveeee her voice. Like, ugh😮‍💨

Now compare the two's voices. Zendaya's is like raspy, sooth. Adele's is like strong, firm and piercing my dying heart.

my idea is

y/n You like video games & played (poppy playtime) before & And watch The GameToons channel.

When y/n died. they reincarnated to Frowny Fox

They were pleased Because Frowny Fox was their favorite character

My idea is to summarize the story.

After you realize that you Die and become Frowny Fox

y/n Decisions to live a happy and adventurous life

first: You tried to find out if there was a guide and Find a screen

shows you your level and your advantages

Kind of reminds you of undertale

secondly: Fix your body.

You search for a laboratory & you Find the materials to Fix Yourbody.

And you have found a shoulder bag

thirdly: Look for Frowny Fox project ownership papers And destroy the backup copy

Even if you were a rejected toy It is better to be completely free From the factory and CEO

you expected it to be difficult, But you found it easy surprisingly.

You said to yourself: Okay makes sense After all I know the law of the universe GameToons

Fourthly: Find a way out of the factory After you left a message to Hoppy Hopscotch the only and true friend to Frowny Fox

fifthly: What is your goal?

Simply You help people of all ages: like

Abuse Children

Fix parents' relationship with their children however if the parents Don't change

After the intervention of the authorities

Children who are bullied or do not have self-confidence or Autistic children.

This is a thought that buzzed in my head like a bee

After Frowny Fox became famous.

The evil CEO ordered To catch that toy

The evil CEO asked how this happened and how Frowny Fox escaped from his factory

Evil CEO: Oh if I knew this would happen and mumbles

Wilson: sir

Evil CEO: What do you want

Wilson: I checked the cameras Like what you asked about Frowny Fox

Evil CEO: Did you find something?

Wilson: Seemingly Frowny Fox went to a laboratory. then he went to Records.

Wilson: I went to check the Records room.

Wilson: I discovered that he took The original papers of the Frowny Fox project ownership papers And he destroyed the backup copy But he left something out

Evil CEO: Let me see

It was a USB With files

The files were How to fix & update: the reject toys and the forgotten toys And a hair growth formula file for the CEO.

while the USB contains a film of Smiling Critters.

The movie is about There is an evil character Take control of CatNap It makes him create nightmares for children

In this adventure with Smiling Critters With children who save CatNap from the control of the evil one.

Wilson: Explain the situation that Frowny Fox was The newest Smiling Critter is invented but he was rejected.

But that won't stop Frowny Fox from move forward.

the Evil OC and toys were shocked When they knew that Frowny Fox was the business partner with the CEO.

Then the Evil OC went to a meeting room With some of Workers.

Tyranno Kenzan (Hassleberry) Headcanons 🦖💥

Because the inner machinations of my mind urge me to go feral, as I do, over this boy. Enjoy my madness.

He's very familiar with plant life, to the point of knowing their scientific names and being able to recognize edible plants and herbs in the wild. He's confused Syrus and Jaden many times by picking a plant seemingly at random and munching on it as they walk back to the dorms.

He has this innate ability to sense when it's going to rain/storm, both because of his leg tensing/aching and he gets HORRID migraines when the weather changes significantly. And he despises them. He doesn't like being dizzy.

Doubly, his leg cramps far more that he gives off, but he doesn't want to bring it up most of the time. Jim's the only one that's noticed, because Karen will nuzzle her head against Tyranno's leg when it's sore.

He gives such blatant neurodivergent vibes, like that is an autistic man right there!!! but the notable parts of it are him being the type to communicate with/subconsciously stim through growls and grunts, especially when trying to focus, and he chews stuff (his necklace, fingernails, pencils, random ass stick he found outside-)

He really likes creature feature films!!! He has a small collection of collectors edition copies of movies in the genre, and outside of Jurassic Park, his favorite is the original Godzilla.

On the subject of movies, he cries so easily at them. Like during any peak emotional moment, my man would be tearing up without THINKING ABOUT IT

He has an internal list of all of his friends' birthdays, music tastes and food preferences ^^ as the token mom friend does

If the others are ever running late for something, he'll just scoop them up and start SPRINTING, like man's got no chill, he WILL lift you like a bag of cement onto his shoulder and RUN

He absolutely HATES VR headsets, they only make his migraines come back, and they're also too high-tech for him,,

He can talk to Karen. Like, the two have full on conversations while Jim's doing something nearby. Jim would be working on homework and in the background its back and forth growling.

Every. Single. Time. They go to the beach, he will run off and start digging a hole in the sand. No purpose, he just digs. And usually Jim and O'Brien join him!

I imagine he was raised in a home that operated on the "take care of your own stuff first, but help when you can" discipline, and while he's happy to do stuff for his buds, they're not immune to a lecture on responsibility every now and then

He has a dino-themed apron and he's a stress baker, something Judai and the others discovered during his first exam season.

Additionally, I imagine he started spending more time with Prof. Sartyr (the Ra dorm leader) after their duel, where they get to cook together and he expands on his already decent homemaker skills.

Yes I said homemaker skills, that man is a malewife and a PROUD one and I will stand by it.

I was informed by some lovely Discord people that he has some fascination with mob/yakuza films, and I can't unsee the idea of him throwing in some gangster phrases mid-duel. Like he comes out with the "swimming with the fishes" and everything.

(Which, sidenote, I also imagine he was super offended by the one Society of Light duelist who talked like a gangster and got a little snobby about it-)

He signs his name by drawing a little dinosaur in the "R" of "Tyranno". I know he does he told me himself.

Similar to the stuff with Karen, he's the kind of person to respond to animal noises with similar noises. Like, he meows back at Pharaoh when he meows.

He has a horrible poker face, and is generally not a great liar. He's easy to read since he's such a physically emotive person.

Rock. Collection. He absolutely has a small pile of rocks with fossils on them in his room somewhere.

I wrote most of these a long time ago but some are newer as a result of me needing to chill~ School is hell, I almost wish I was at Duel Academy instead,,

Thoughts on aftg/star trek?

oh god. so many!

vulcan andrew. he fits the mold pretty well, except for the violence. I could see him similar to spock in that case, a half vulcan, which would add to the way hes kind of seen as an unpredictable character by the upperclassmen -- working with the idea that people who are both terran and vulcan dont fit perfectly into easy behavior stereotypes. im thinking a lot about the pocket book "mindshadow" where spock's "inconsistencies" get expored. in an aftg to tos recast, id put him as spock.

that brings me to neil, who i think in said recast is a really solid kirk. There's this one tumblr post by @/na-nanu talking about kirk's alienation, and one line that has stuck with me ever since i read it: "Kirk, while personable, is a fairly Vulcan human." this strikes me as so so neil. until they really get to know him better, the upperclassmen tend to read neil in opposition to andrew. neil, to those outside, is the more personable of the two, the one who feels. as we all know, neil and andrew are incredibly similar -- which is why i referenced that quote just now. like kirk, neil takes andrew as he is, and never asks for more than he can give.

more kirk qualities: neil is ride or die (literally) for his team, self-sacrificing and quick-witted. he's not afraid to lie or trick his way into getting what he wants. lets be honest, both of these men love a good ruse.

going back to andrew for a moment, the way andrew is talked about as unfeeling and monstrous rings a very similar bell to the way terrans talk about vulcans and their lack of emotional display. kirk can read spock better than anyone, sound familiar?

this gets its own bullet point because i dont know where to put it. not all of my thoughts on aftg/st are so matchy-matchy (like, trying to make things line up), but i think the episode "The Enemy Within" and Neil-Nathaniel-Only-One-Of-Them-Can-Survive-Both-Of-Them-Want-To-Live have got some interesting similarities. Nathaniel dying in that basement too, and such.

I feel like people might want to cast Kevin as McCoy, because of McSpirk, and how they're the main trio. but because of Spock and Bones' frequent disagreements, similarities, and general vibes i really see him as Aaron, who's more explosive then Kevin when it comes to Andrews apathy. Bones and his wife and kid back home are also kind of Katelyn-esque.

renee and uhura... i think that this parallel works if spock/andrew, vulcan andrew what have you, is at the core of this thing. theres a lot of similarities for everyone, but god. he's the reason i'm even thinking about tos and aftg together. the "unlikely" friendship, everyone thinking they have a thing, bonding over a shared activity (but its music instead of beating the shit out of each other)

i can really imagine andrew getting into star trek. its a really good "what if?" show that i think he'd enjoy, given his feelings on the zombie apocalypse. renee could definitely get into the morality aspect as well. i can see them talking about the questions in the epsodes, like "so what would you do if your evil clone tried to take over the ship?" and the like. Andrew seeing himself in Spock, seeing someone who also can only deal with his emotions on the lowest volume, and him being loved nonetheless. Maybe seeing a little bit of his not-boyfriend-nothing Neil in Kirk.

another thing about spock/andrew. they are both surprisingly open! I'd have to go back and look to find the exact post, but someone made a great post about how kirk is actually not that forthcoming about his past/life, while spock, if you literally just ask him, will tell you a lot! this i think is hilariously similar to neil being seen as the more open one, when he is actually so cagey and full of false pasts, while andrew will answer most questions. people just never seem to ask (until neil, ofc).

There's definitely more where this came from, so ill add on to this later, but im battling a bit of a headache right now and need to end it here. Thank you so so much for the ask, im excited to hear what you think!!!!!!!!

* He is a very cool character with his hair style that he changes frequently and his unique style

* He has a cool vibe, he seems like a bit of a shy person for being cool

* Crazier than Shiba in fights. Doesn't get angry quickly but can be pretty tough

* He's also quite loyal. We all know that Shibaman and him were with Todoroki from the very beginning and they never left him alone.

* No matter how tough and wild he may seem, I think he is very kind hearted, soft and funny to those he loves.

* For him, I think someone between would be great, rather than someone too serious or too loud.

* Someone who is calm but knows how to have fun, is not afraid to say what she thinks, helpful and cheerful.

Metal band story devlog 9: let’s write some characters

I think a good exercise worth doing is starting a story from every conceivable avenue. A musician I really like has gone on record as to prove themselves doing this. If you’re not familiar with the work of Andrew Huang, now’s your time to go to his youtube channel and start watching his stuff. literally, start anywhere. He even has a short sci-fi series where he makes music in space, I digress.

similarly, I think from my list of projects I’ve started stories from every corner imaginable: I’ve started with the world, with the characters, with a vague plot, a vibe, an iconic scene that I built around, prompts, doodles, the corpses of other stories, a format, dnd characters, so on and so forth I won’t go into details otherwise we’ll be here all day. What I’m getting at is that sometimes when you have your themes, world and other bullshit figured out it can be easy for characters to feel in service of the story. They kind of need to be but personally I find that when a character is just themselves, the situations that aren’t boring end up feeling much more interesting than if they were written around the world they inhabit. So today we’re going to try to extrapolate our themes into personality traits while making sure there’s a bunch of other stuff going on.

So let's get started. Here's our first theme from the last devlog: How much of the soul of art and music gets lost in translation?

Let’s go back to when we discussed the sensibilities of metal and classical music. There are two things to note here: how does the unapologetic intense self expression of heavy metal react when met with the calm exterior of classical music? In my experience, while this is nowadays changing, classical musicians tend to be more calm and collected, borderline tactical in their approach to music. The desire for the divine aspect of music doesn’t seem to vibe that well with the intensity and fun of most metal music. The difference here is that even when classical music is having fun and poking at the music, it’s still a very choreographed thing. Sure, you see that in metal too but it doesn’t feel that way. No one is saying that metal is improv, but historically speaking classical musicians need to loosen up a little. What does all of this mean practically? here are some traits we can already associate with our musicians:

metal musicians in the story: loud, spontaneous, rude, unapologetic, escapist, funny, introspective

classical musicians in the story: applied, calm, tactical, silly in a fun way, social, restrained, professional, empathetic, anxious, perfectionist

to note: these traits are not universal and not exclusive. Part of writing people and not characters is understanding that no one can be summarized by a list of attributes, these are merely general guidelines. In reality every character with one trait will also display the opposing one.

How do our musicians bounce off each other? How confrontational are they? do they have other emotional aspects to them that override what’s going on in certain situations? for example: maybe someone has a problem with authority because they were mistreated in some way and that overshadows their empathy or ability to escape through the music? This is where I also consider the more personal attributes they have that are unrelated to the music. Keep in mind, when we write a character based on a hobby, we’re backtracking to that character. This hobby or interest of theirs says something about them and that thing is not always the same.

Who does art/music belong to?

This one is interesting because it asks a very vague question, the answer to which could say something about you. Maybe you think that art is deeply personal and perhaps you might have trouble engaging with the more emotional aspects of art because you don’t want to feel exposed. Or you maybe think art is for other people, which might say something about a need for validation or self worth or maybe neither of those things: maybe you’re just here to make the world a nicer place and it makes you happy when art helps with that. Maybe you’re torn! and that also says something: you’re struggling with the need to see art for others and whatever ramifications thereof, and making something for yourself. surely that’s bound to be an interesting conversation…

How much does inspiration really matter?

To me this is the most telling about discipline and control. And I think this journal entry from some time ago explains my thoughts well:

As adults, we’re expected to relentlessly pursue happiness and have everything figured out. This shows up the most in our music and fiction, in how we struggle to think of things or if we do, we struggle to see them as having value. This is why discipline is important in art. art wants to be made and doesn’t expect us to wait for permission from inspiration to make it. The control we have over how we choose to see things makes things harder or easier for us.

I think the band should have 4 members. the drummer, the bassist and guitarist, the vocalist and the non sequitur- the classical musician. I think I'm going to expand the definition of classical to encompass more varied genres from around the world– that should give the music a more Igorrr-esque feel.

I’m not sure about what their genders will be, but here are the initial overviews of the characters:

member A: the stranger, newcomer. Realistically this will be the classical musician and the newcomer position will be helpful to present things from a fresh point of view, so it would make sense to learn about pre-existing things that would not usually be spoken of. A comes from a scholar/professional training background and this shows in how initially they value the showmanship more than the music. they act as the glue that holds the band together and the inciting event that sets forward the motions of the story, the main essence of that reflecting how inspiration is fleeting. the tactical discipline of classical training, while doing them a disservice for being able to speak honestly through their work, does wonders when it comes to ideation and management. A is a little stream of water that carves through the mountain. they’re stubborn, but very shy when it comes to certain things. repressed, but effective.

member B: i’d like this to be the drummer, but we’ll see. It would be cool if B was the most introspective of the 4, breaking the stereotype of the dumb drummer. I’d like to also base the idea of them on the drummer of fall of eden, (see devlog 2) who is a med student. should be very interesting talking about how these two very large aspects of their life struggle for control of their time. B has a loud personality because how could they not? they’re a drummer. they’re studying a profession where they mainly talk to people and help them. they’re confident in themselves and that’s a very admirable trait– until you realize they’re a bit full of themselves. they're also a bit awkward around people, they haven’t quite figured out that part just yet. loud, but shy.

member C: the guitarist. soft spoken, very silly, morbid in the best and worst ways. C is perpetually going through some shit. they’re the type of person who will show up hours late to a gathering and say “sorry, I was microwaving my socks” and not be kidding or exaggerating in any way. ADHD to the bone, a shining example of “out of sight, out of mind” and how that applies to emotions. (will need to research that some more) C deals with their self worth all the time, and frequently feel like an impostor because they were never professionally trained to play the guitar. To them, music isn’t just about the audience or the product. It's about having a good time, escapism or not. passionate, but lost.

member D: by far the most exposed to the limelight, the lead singer of the band is also the lyricist. They are the most emotionally charged of the bunch, handling some anger issues that frequently put a wedge between them and the people they love. they’re also impressively fragile, and i’m thinking they would have some friction with A when they start suggesting changes to the musical style because that’s something the consistency of which brings them comfort. spontaneous, rude and unapologetic. they’re the kind of person to yell at you for an hour only to then apologize and make you pizza.

I think that’s pretty decent for the main cast. Obviously there are other characters at play but I’ll figure those out as I write the script. they’ll be given a similar treatment, but will only serve specific bits and scenes in the story.

next week, we’ll hopefully be drafting up some designs.

The server here is my coffee day girl, a one-off pin-up character (technically a two-off one), swirls and all!

The pod she’s working in is named “It’s Bean” which is a joke only for me really. Back in high school I made a comedic RPG Maker game and - not even as a joke, I just liked the song that much, the main overworld theme was One Week by Barenaked Ladies. Not even a tacky midi version as was the style at the time, just straight up the MP3. The epilogue scene where you return to the main town after beating the final boss played an acoustic version I downloaded, I took it quite seriously. So it became a sort of mini meme among my immediate friendship group after someone was like “god the music makes me laugh every time, I’ll be listening to a befitting Gerudo Valley midi while exploring the desert area or a pleasant Koopa Troopa Beach midi while exploring the seaside area and then you go back to the main town and out of nowhere “IT’S BEEN-””.

Cammie vacantly shlooourping the coffee at the end after being in severe pain beforehand - and the imagined circumstances that bridged the time between the last panel of the coffee pod scene and the first panel of the music shop scene - are one of my fave daft visual gags from over the years.

#136 - Dinner

Time to come up with Cammie’s family, what fun! There’s always the temptation to go ironic and have them be utterly unlike her, but she’s such a beacon of positivity I just didn’t want to betray those vibes, so they’re all pretty much as full of energy or kindness as she is. Naturally the joke is that Cammie is more interested in a dog than a relationship, but the fact that she’s uninterested in a relationship is still true to her character, not just for joking’s sake.

The general plot here was just that I wanted to do an extended christmas scene that would hopefully evoke all the cosy vibes I associate with christmas from my own family’s ones over my life.

#137 - Family

And here we see Cammie’s brothers! There’s nothing concretely referencial here in particular but I definitely channeled memories of growing up with my own older brother and younger sister coming up with the wholesome flashbacks. I did design everyone’s adult appearance beyond just Riley and then designed their younger selves, but unfortunately Hubert and Jay still haven’t shown up beyond these flashbacks so not for this trivia, alas!

Hubert has an Orange Squish (mentioned plenty of times in Cammie Comic trivia at this point I’m sure) soda brand pencil case, like those old 7up ones. Do they still make those? They probably did ones in other brands too but I had a 7up one.

#138 - Merry

Not too much to say here, naturally Cammie’s mum takes more cues from Cammie for her design, but Cammie got her curls from Dad! Designing family members is fun, lol.

No big meaning behind anyone’s names, just chose ones I liked really that all kinda tied in with the idea of “is it easy enough to believe these people would name their child Chamomile?” lol.

#139 - While

ONE of Cammie’s family members at least had to share her trademark forehead hair swirlies, they’re cartoon characters, c’mon! Riley here has a more subtle version of them. Probably the only thing subtle about him.

Just a few more drips and drabs of poor Bri’s slightly turbulent childhood here, just to flesh out her and Cammie’s early relationship a bit.

Boy the speech bubbles sure are crowding everything on this one huh? One of my bad habits with comicing that I’m trying to be more conscious of these days. But it’s one way to make the Christmas special cosy!

#140 - Wonderful

If I was doing cosy family christmas comics I had to take the opportunity to draw a big ol’ spread of roast dinner. Like me and any self-respecting person they have a mountain of roast potatoes, the best roast dinner food.

Grumpy Cammie is another favourite Cammie I have ever drawn.

It’s a tired old joke but, including in the previous one where it was highlighted, 12-going-on-13-year-old Cammie’s niece Jody has already entered her teenage mono-syllabic phase, with her only dialogue in the whole arc being non-verbal noises.

#141 - Desserts

A little more development for Brianna here, because I wanted to explain how someone who doesn’t seem like the sort to actively pursue such responsibility might end up running their own business. And then another “don’t let Cammie near fire” joke of course.

The sitting room area here was (lazily, but you don’t know that), based on the layout of the sitting room at my Mum’s house back when I was in Uni, felt like the obvious choice since I associate christmasses there with the first time my partner Molly joined us.

The post-foods “just hanging out” christmas mood was an important time for me to cover as well - adults watching TV and chatting while children do things with stuff they got sort of in the vicinity. Jody is eating a Terry’s Chocolate Orange to complete the experience, naturally! (It’s not Terry’s though, it’s Dawn French’s Jody’s.)

some things about my writing that i never talk about:

• i like writing connected shit. if you want to connect our shit, let me know. i used to write a lot of mumu rp when i was younger. shit is like crack to me. for ease, i have the james family, the band volcano girl, the barton legacy, my group of criminals, the golden ranch, and the religious disasters, lucien, louis, maeve and tate. • i attach music to most starter and memes. this isn't a plot or anything, more so a vibe attached to my muse or just the general vibe of the threads kick off dialogue. i used to use emotionsbaggagecheck which often came with a song to help brighten your day. • i am going to put more effort into my muse page than i need to and i apologize. i try to make it easy to navigate so you can access the exact information you are looking for but there's also a lot of little goodies in there for if you want to learn more about a character. • i don't like writing smut, however with partners i am comfortable with, i am happy to write what i have dubbed 'smut adjacent'. this is a narratively satisfactory skip, without a fade to black per se. this describes emotions and thoughts with a few saucy lines sprinkled in. i am also more than happy to discuss my muses sex preferences, kinks and whatever outside of the thread if that helps those who like to write smut. • some of my muses have interesting dynamics that piss of those who are strict about representation. some characters that have been brought to me claiming white washing or racism or bad rep include: angel wilson (last name, this is because her step father adopted her when she was little), graceland kaya (first name, who kept her turkish last name, however her parents were obsessed with elvis), dodie and cleo prince (they are sisters, but they are step sisters actually). romeo moretti burton (last name?who was adopted by the burton's when he was four because his mother was mama burton's best friend and she passed away. this one confuses me because he still has his mother's last name?). • i have a lot of cowboys. twelve to be exact. and i imagine i will add more in the future. i make no apologies. i watched yellowstone and it changed me as a person. the cool thing about the cowboys is that they can also be massively connected. i have two writing partners who write with multiple characters from this group and one of which even has multicharacter threads with my cowboys. • i post a lot of ooc posts. especially talking about what tv shows and films i am watching (keats watches), what music i am listening to (keats listens), what video games i am playing (keats plays) and even what threads i am reading that i did not write (keats writes)! they are all tagged with ooc, so i you don't want to see them, it's easy as pie to block that tag.

- exile, Taylor Swift: AHHHHH!!! This is my favorite folklore song. It's so emotional and the lyrics are beautiful. The subtle crescendo the song has as it goes on gets me everytime, and the dual pov about the end of a relationship feels so natural and melancholic (and it's dair).

- Enchanted, Taylor Swift: Do I need to explain this one?

- Remember Fall in Montreal, Roo Panes: The soothing vocals and the theme of pain and wistfulness of long distance relationships is *chef's kiss*

- Rivers and Roads, The Head and the Heart: GROWING PAINS!!! The feeling of growing out of the people you once loved is always painful, and this song really captures the essence of that. It's understated, but powerful.

- Remember That Night?, Sara Keys: While I don't connect with this song on an emotional level, something about this song intrigues me. Maybe it's the instrumental music or the Vibes, but this song is, like, an enigma to me.

- R.I.P. 2 my youth, The Neighborhood: Something something kids experience the same situations adults do and it fucks them up. I remember sending @terrainofheartfelt something about this song and how I related it to gg. I think the lyrics are clever and that they resemble a lot of things that kids actually go through.

- right where you left me, Taylor Swift: This song. THIS SONG!!! It definitely hits a fear of mine about being left behind while everyone in my life is moving on. It's scary and it's soul-crushing. You want to move on with your life, too, and experience the world and all it has to teach, but you're just stuck in a singular moment in your life *shudders*.

- It's Nice to Have a Friend, Taylor Swift: I did this one on another ask, but it's just that good to me. I love everything about it. The lyrics, the instrumental music, the vocals, and the style of Taylor's lyrics (brief and abrupt, as if you were seeing the culmination of memories and history that lead up to the ending relationship). It's Perfection.

- invisible string, Taylor Swift: I find the song comforting, and I think it's just a good listen.

- In the Stars, Benson Boone: The song is evocative, and the crescendo to the chorus was impacting. A very nice song, overall.

- IDK You Yet, Alexander 23: The hopeless romantic in me just gets this song. Wondering about the person who you'll find in the future, and you can't help but slightly idealize this figment of your imagination. idk this song speaks to me on a romantic level (which is rare because not many songs do really. There are a lot that make me emotional, but not many that I relate to). Also, it has acoustic guitar. Automatic A+ from me.

- Ireland, Liza Anne: this woman UNDERSTANDS me. This entire song is like a daydream to me, and it definitely relates to my dreams of living in Ireland.

- Cherry Wine, Hozier: It's Hozier.

- Cambridge, 1923, Jóhann Jóhannsson: This is just instrumental music, but I love it so much. Generally speaking, I adore the music from "The Theory of Everything", but this piece was an amazing opener. It embodies wonder and light and it makes me feral.

- coney island, Taylor Swift ft. the Nationals: Amazing, on all accounts. Like with exile, the subtlety is what makes this song for me. It proves that you can have emotional breakthroughs without grand announcement. Also, it's a work of lyrical genius, and whenever the chorus comes, I start singing my heart out.

- champagne problems, Taylor Swift: Just typing this song caused a little watering in my eye. It's such a heartbreaking song where neither party is happy. The bridge is one if Taylor's best, and it hits the note of not being ready for that kind of change. Even though I've never gone through something like this, I do relate to it because I get pretty scared whenever a big change comes. The instrumental, the ENDING, the lyrics; it's a lot.

- Crazier Things, Chelsea Cuttler (with Noah Kahan): I really like the Vibe of this song. It's light and pretty and it makes me feel happy (and it's one of my few dair songs that I don't connect with Taylor <3). The style of the song is great, and I love the way the sing makes me feel. Also, I adore Noah Kahan and his music, so... there you go.

Some thoughts about Spotify's "AI" DJ:

The DJ doesn't seem like an issue compared to other generative "AI", it's not using data sets of stolen intellectual property, and I've seen it being applauded as the Right Kind of AI. However, I want to consider what potential harm it might be doing, to the consumer users of Spotify, and the musicians on the platform.

The way people use Spotify differs from person to person, but I've spoken to many people whose use of Spotify is mostly listening to the various playlists provided by Spotify. They're already curated by genre or vibe, so it's pretty easy for the consumer to find something that fills their need. This is, however, harder on the musicians who now have to spend a significant effort trying to get onto those playlists.

The DJ seems to be a continuation of this, except using an "AI" to at least act as a presenter of what is essentially a mix of your most played songs and some artists who play similar music. I would not be surprised if there is large adoption of DJ, that they might add a chatbot function to ask your mood or what genre you want to hear right now, although I can't imagine it getting any more complex than that. It's just merging Playlist Listening, with a high-tech looking interface, trying to cash in on "AI" hype. This will likely mean more people listening to Spotify playlists rather than non-Spotify curated playlists, meaning it's even more important for artists to get on them.

Another thing I want to highlight is that I find the use of "AI" assistance to curate a near endless stream of content worrying. This isn't new, this is just another algorithm like those used by social media and youtube, to capture our attention, and encourage addiction. Having a little DJ pal to do your thinking for you, slopping "good enough" content suggestions into your music trough, is eroding agency away from consumers. Spotify doesn't care about music, it cares about getting the most engagement.

There is also the threat that "AI" generated music, away from all the expenses of labour costs, will likely become a thing, and the way they will sneak it into the ears of consumers will be through the use of things like Spotify DJ. Mindful consumption is required to make sure that the musicians, who are already getting a shit deal by having to use a platform that undervalues their work, do not have that work further undervalued, or are pushed out of the profession entirely.

a fruitful first shoot day | a tale of perseverance despite the odds

dated: 230318

a late start:

i had truly prepared everything for our first shoot day with the utmost care, making sure to ask everybody about their schedules and confirm the game-plan for the day and everything, but due to an unfortunate mix of unforeseen personal matters that needed to be taken care of and traffic, one of our actors was delayed and consequently, our shoot day started a good couple of hours later than we initially intended it to.

mini briefing and setting up:

we quickly got to work as soon as we gathered, though, starting off by setting up our 'camera' (in actuality an iPhone) and the main star of our first shoot day: the projector. after we had set it all up, i actually gave the whole team (both actors and crew) a small presentation-like briefing on what we were hoping to achieve with this project and how we would go about it.

i discussed the aesthetics we were going for, the locations we were hoping to hit, and tried my best to give them all a clear general idea of the direction we were going for so that they could in turn help me realise my vision.

getting to work:

after the short presentation, we got to work in earnest by taking all the shots i had in mind for the projector. it was mainly experimenting with different kinds of backgrounds to figure out which ones worked best with the vibe i was going for, and which ones actually looked the best on camera (since a lot of the backgrounds simply proved to be too dark or too bright).

i also fed the korean lyrics one line at a time to my actor, making sure to break down the pronunciation into simple syllables so that it’d be easy for him to memorise, but it was still (admittedly) quite a struggle since it took us a good five minutes of repeating one line back and forth for it to really stick, & only THEN could we shoot it.

once i was satisfied with the amount of lipsync clips we had shot, i decided to make use of the projector to take some cool shadow shots for the flashback portion of our music video with both actors.

this led to quite a frustrating bit of fiddling with the angle of the camera because we were shooting in the confined little space that is my bedroom, and the camera angle had to be set very specifically to capture shadows produced by the projector but not the camera or cameraperson (me) themselves.

we actually experimented with quite a LOT of different angles and approaches to shooting the shadow scenes, but they ultimately turned out looking just the way i had imagined them to be, much to my satisfaction.

off to a good night's rest for tomorrow (shoot day 2):

by the time i was mostly satisfied with the amount of footage we had shot for our first day, it was around 2 at night and all of us were understandably tuckered out, so despite wanting to shoot just a couple more lip-sync lines, we all treated ourselves to some delivered ice-cream and called it a day.

all in all, it proved to be quite a fruitful first shoot day, and i was left hoping for the best for the second day as well.

My 4444-word review of NEO TWEWY (with personal illustration + heavy spoilers)

My overall critical score for the game is 7.5/10, while my personal enjoyment score is 8.5/10. This review is posted as I have 80% completed the game, got the secret ending and achieved the Angel psychic rank. I’ll first start with the main pros and cons as follows.

PROS:

- Enjoyable as a whole, still upholding the first game’s spirit in world building and sharing the same backbone - which was mostly revealed in the Secret Reports, it’s impossible to grasp the story without reading them.

- The new cast and new game is charming in their own way

- The old cast’s return is one of the biggest highlights for sure, it was fun and impactful. Everyone stays true to themselves and also had their own stories wrapped up nicely.

- Boss designs are cool, new pins are fun to use and collect

- The connection between the old and new cast is well written and executed, including but are not limited to the tension between the old and new protagonist, the weird but fun interaction between the 2 Composers, the new friendships revealed and formed

- Sho being in the main cast is something so uniquely TWEWY and uniquely Sho

- Still good music

- Still many fun side quests, some of them really uphold the same quirky spirit of the old game and some are surprisingly touching

- Many new nice stores and yummy looking foods to explore

- The map is really easy to memorize for me, it’s fun to travel around the “current” Shibuya to see all the differences compared to the past

- The social network is crazy and interesting to read through

- Has an anti-frustration system to help 100% complete the game more easily and earn money faster, so post-game is relatively managable.

- Overall, I really feel the efforts the team poured into making this as their passion project, not just during the development process but for all the last 14 years. They showed the vision of what they wanted to make, at the same time giving something to both the old as well as new fans.

CONS:

- The biggest problem with the game is scenario writing. The story is so heavily back-loaded. The director himself thought it would be better to balance out the tension flow by adding more at the beginning but gave in to the scenario writer in the end, probably due to time pressure. This results in an underwhelming execution of characterization and lots of wasted potentials for the first half of the game.

- I struggle to view it as a stand-alone game, since the backstory and the old cast both play such an important role in the core of the game. If someone plays this game without having played the OG, they can only enjoy it on surface value at best.

- The new cast is nice but most of them aren’t quite as intriguing as the old cast, maybe it’s cuz they’re all too nice deep down that they lack a little bit of an edge, of that batshit craziness that everyone in the OG used to have? I think some characters (Fret, Nagi) ended up weaker in terms of characterization because the writer is too afraid of making them unlikeable – which kind of backlashed cuz they only became likable in the most expectable way to cater for a specific group of fans. I would have wished for the other team leaders to be more crazy too, had they not suffered 30+ loops of the Game…

- The CAMERAWORK IS HELL.

- Gameplay does get tedious at certain points with all the time travels.

- Shiba is so badly written as a villain, some Shinjuku characters should be given more screentime cutting into Shiba’s– like Hishima or Kaie or even, Hazuki (though his limited presence also solidified his importance).

- Some of the main character designs, for example Beat’s hairstyle and his food reactions are hilariously bad. What’s the point of covering up most of his unique facial features?

- Some of the minor/side characters’ design are too cool for them to have such a small role (eg: Ayano, Eiru). Ryoji did get much screentime but is nowhere as fun as Makoto was.

- Overall the scope of this game is made a little too big for the team to handle as perfectly as the last game that was very compact, it felt somewhat rushed in development too so the missing pieces are clearly there in the final picture

The entry fee versus paying for it all in the end

An important difference between the Neo game and the original Shibuya game was that the Shibuya rule asked for an entry fee that is the Player’s most important asset, stated as a chance the Composer gives them to reexamine themselves. Meanwhile, the Shinjuku rule neither encourages nor allows personal growth and ultimately aims to erase as many Players as possible. It’s a pity we were never introduced to the full Shinjuku rulebook, as it seems like the system there focuses more on building up power and a grand government to compare with the individuality-driven system of Shibuya.

When you have to compare the new game and the original game (OG), this is an important factor to consider. Also, the OG has a serious storyline running through and through, locked with a different partner/GM creating unique atmosphere for each week and you don’t get to see your old partners again until the end. NEO’s team system does not allow such deep insight and communication between the Players. All of your teammates are always there throughout, the dynamic does change with each new addition but it is not as prominent as a partner change.

Another important factor is how the OG was built from scratch for a new platform as “something no one has ever seen before”, while Neo recycled a lot of old unused ideas from the previous development (check out this interview for more details). The development team for NEO lacks 2 key members and had a change of writer so the final product is not as strongly bound together as the last game.

The new cast is definitely inspired by today’s teenagers (from the view of creators), compared to the old cast they’re more sociable and always seem to take whatever works for them despite feeling unstable inside. They are all innocent and genuinely nice kids, avoiding to hurt each other to a degree that they end up keeping some sort of distance. They’re also unable to communicate at deeper levels, always stagnant at this half-baked stage of equilibrium without any motivation to get to the core of things. That is the cost of entering the game without an entry fee, without even dying or having a reason to be there/to fight seriously. These kids were stolen from the RG into a Game that was decidedly the worst environment for them to change or develop, just wandering around cluelessly to find a way “out” until tragedies started to unfold one by one and they ended up being charged the total sum of the price for their actions – ultimately losing everything in the end.

That is, I believe, a story arc which can resonate more to the youth of today rather than of my generation. If the message of the old game was to “listen”, enjoy life to the fullest and accept to trust others, the message of the new game is to “speak up” from the inside, trying to understand yourself and take actions instead of just going with the flow and finally, to take responsibility for such actions.

If Neku was handpicked by the Composer for being the special one with an all-dense soul to ensure victory of the game then Rindo was just a normal kid chosen out of random by Kubo to be his back-up plan, who just happened to have a high enough imagination to awaken the incredible power from his pin. Rindo was then officially chosen by the Composer as Josh picked up and handed the pin to him again, this time not as Josh’s personal Proxy – but as the Proxy to represent the normal people of Shibuya and via whom he could gamble if humans can fight for their own fate.

The underworld heroine and the hero with little of his own

Shoka is for me a refreshing and layered heroine. She’s the kind of character that took at least 3 trials of creators to form as a complete individual – that included Nomura who gave her the base design and Reaper background, Gen who gave a more cunning touch and the writers who made her English dialogues more punchy. Dishonesty equals “tsundere” is such a cliché, so the English writers tried really hard to avoid that trope in my opinion, while still letting her good intention come through.

She serves as the character who is informed of everything the players should have known, and there was almost nothing she could do about it. Almost. Until she met Rindo.

They were drawn to each other by sharing a state of “not having anything of their own”. They both started out with not being able to truly know themselves, Shoka even hated her RG life but also managed to mature from that stage before Rindo. She must have vibed with Shiki’s love and passion in the Gatto Nero threads, initiating her connection with Shibuya and understanding herself more. With Shoka as Swallow, they were able to open up to each other and offer mental support… but was still not getting to the centre of their problems because for all this time, Shoka could not tell Rindo the most important things about herself.

How did Shoka feel when she met Rindo at the UG? She probably didn’t want to hope that he would live the day until she witnessed the Twisters’ potentials. From the very beginning, they were both incredibly conscious of each other and also constantly frustrated that the person they happened to “notice” was such a condescending bitch/a clueless loser. The Shinjuku Reapers are overall quite drunk in power and uncompassionate to Players, Shoka included. She is also a master of dissociation, which results in her constant boredom, tone swings, haughtiness and subconsciously distancing herself from the friend – the boy she cares about – from false hope, as she judged from facts that it was a hopeless situation where nothing could ever be. Maybe she is naturally a bit of a chameleon just like her name suggests (Shoka 紫陽花 = hydrangea, the color-changing flower), so putting on an act and always dissociating herself from what’s important was easy, while hiding her contradiction was impossible. It was the ex-Reaper Beat who broke it out to her, that she should decide whether she really cared and wanted to do something for a change. He knew how it felt like to cross that line, and knew she wanted to too.

Shoka is endeared by many of the Shinjuku Reapers and has shown independent acts of kindness (the Shinjuku ghost), proving that her kind and truthful side is as real as her harsh and dishonest side – which makes her a nice mirror to the previous heroine Shiki, who also embraced a dichotomy of self-complex and self-love within her character. In the end, she was the first of the new cast to ultimately accept all that is important to her and independently made the decision to help save Shibuya despite all costs.

She was jealous at Rindo’s interaction with Tsugumi and Kanon but remained silent cuz she wasn’t at a place to have any say about it. She also didn’t reveal about Swallow because that would only add an awkward irrelevance to their current situation, as she was too ready to face erasure at the end of the Game. She only wished to “play a game” with him, be it FanGo or the Reapers’ Game. The tension that the team could only feel at the end, she’s felt it the entire time. The song “DIVIDE” is applicable to not just one bond in the game, but it always makes me think of theirs. There is always a “divide” between her and Rindo throughout the course of their journey, as the living and the dead, as a Player and Reaper, as someone who has a place to return to and someone who doesn’t, someone who knows little but wields too much power and someone who knows a lot despite not being able to do much.

To be honest, maybe I didn’t grow any affection for the new main cast from Rindo’s perspective but from Shoka’s. Since I started to sympathize with Shoka, I started to see the boy in a more “real” way. The real Rindo, behind his peaceful façade with others, would lash out on Shoka for her unfairly harsh attitude while none of the others cared. He could also subtly feel that mantle of unspoken secrets from her, her own contradictions, the unresolved chemistry between themselves – and not knowing what to do with it rather than to feel angry with all the unfairness he could not process. (As a Libra too, he’s triggered the most by unfairness!)

It is actually a positive development as he’s at least “reacting” to something strongly now rather than to keep evading his problems. During my replay, I clearly saw the difficult situation Shoka was in, her remaining harshness after the Motoi incident was due to her internal struggle with a mission to save her own life, versus a chance to really be with the team. Her decision was to do both at the risk of losing favour from both sides. Rindo started to accept her layer by layer, as the person who resonated the most to her contradicting nature from the start and knew that via learning her resolve, he has learnt his too.

Later into the game, she even got too much of his attention. Maybe even without knowing she’s Swallow, he’s familiar with her thinking direction and Swallow had always been closer to him than any other friend. It was only after she had to betray her important ones twice that she could start being truly honest. The scene when she died a 2nd time left a strong impression in me, the little reveal let Rindo know that he is also losing Swallow as he’s losing Shoka – and that only death could drive the last secret out of her. Her final “Later, loser” echoed through Rindo as it was the final truth, with only him remaining to hear it: they had actually, already lost everything.

Rindo was the boy who never dared to face all that matters to him until he lost it all, fighting an unfair battle in the faith that they would somehow still win. Shoka was the girl who always knew what was dear to her, but never dared to think she could be together with them ever after and still threw her all into a battle she knew was losing. I think they stir each other on naturally to fill out their gaps, similar to what the Shibuya game partner systerm would have aimed for. The end reward was a little divine intervention to help close up the divide between them once and for all.

During the game there was not enough space to process anything personal so at the ending when they officially became “friends”, it was an important affirmation of their bond. Some people complained it was friendzoning but it’s not, they just have arrived at the perfect place to start something more. “From now on, we will truly be together” – I read it as that kind of message.

The heroine from a lost battle, with her story taken away

After reading the secret reports and playing the game to be surprised of how small a role Tsugumi had in the main game despite being the “Hype-chan” thought to be a major character of the next TWEWY installment, many fans would feel sad at a missed opportunity to see the Shinjuku arc in full depiction.

It was shown clearly that, a Shinjuku arc was very carefully planned out and is a vital part of the whole story, yet it could not be made due to various circumstances behind the development scene. I would assume, that the team were not able to make a TWEWY game that ended on a despairing note, but it already happened in their mind, thus becoming a mental burden that forced them to break away from it and started the game anew with NEO. A significant part of NEO became the healing arc for the Shinjuku characters, especially for Tsugumi though I really wished more emphasis should have been placed on her rather than Shiba. We didn’t even get to see her brother – Shinjuku’s Conductor who had a vital role and instead was given the clueless Shiba, who had absolutely no idea what’s going on all the way until the last day in NEO. It’s as if Tsugumi has had her story stolen away from her, because her own battle ended with a saddening loss.

I think every time the game creators look at Tsugumi, they would feel that sadness too. Maybe to them, she is a bigger character than what is seen by the fans, as despite their failed effort to depict her story, she’s lived in their mind for all these years through periods of destruction, healing and rebuild. Though it is a pity we could not get to experience the full scope of the Shinjuku story, the creators was clear about the place they wished for it to arrive at.

Individuality, connection and the social network

The team system adapted from Shinjuku rulebook does not allow much room for personal development, as the team dynamic is closer to a work relationship forced to bear results, than a spiritual bond to max out all corners of understanding as found in the partnership system. The old Shibuya system allowed only 1 winner and 1 week limit per game, while the new rule declares for a 1 winning team and only the team at last place will be erased – the other teams will enter another loop. Furthermore, whichever team to challenge the unwinnable Ruinbringers will face the risk of ending up dead last followed by erasure. As a result, the longest-standing teams are most likely not the strongest ever recorded, but the ones who have figured out a strategy to simply survive until something changes, enjoying their newly found social constructs while they are at it. Basically, it is a system to hypnotise players into the illusion that they are still “living”.

Therefore, we as players would not get to the core of each Player individually as fast and directly as we did in the last game. The Twisters were able to stand out not because they’re powerful, they only started to have a real chance after growing enough to each form a meaningful and personal connection to another teammate. It did not come as a team, nor did it intiate from the existing friendship between Rindo and Fret. In fact, I did not find much solidity or anything truly note-worthy about the main team and new characters within themselves until they started clashing with other team members, Reapers and new recruits from week 2 onwards. Rindo found his personal development with Shoka (via a clash with Motoi and pretty much a mini dating sim between them), then via the confrontation of his role with Neku; Fret found his with Kanon then Nagi, the team learned about the real Neku via Beat, Neku entered the UG via Coco’s wish to save Tsugumi… it was not the team but their personal links that empowered them to fight and solve each of their problems.

The other team leaders may have failed because they did not form such personal links, after 30+ hopeless loops Fuya’s team all fell apart to pursue their own interest even at the cost of erasure, Motoi quit his KOL façade to work like a dog for the Reapers (probably to save just his own ass not his team), while Kanon dropped her tricks to find changes via honest cooperation in acceptance of a fair loss. The despairing note in that is huge without making much of a scene because their failure didn’t happen at their best effort to “win”, but in their last attempt to find a way “out”. Even Shiba got his way “out” in the end thanked to his personal friendship with Hishima and Tsugumi.

Something has shifted in the mindset of the game creators in the last 14 years, as both games are about “connection vs individuality” but the last game focuses more on connection between just individuals and this one on the overall network that is formed out of those individual connections.

The introduction of Beat into the main cast was truly the bridge between old and new, they helped each other out in several turns before officially recruiting him. Beat is a character whom a lot of fans including myself have felt somewhat concerned about after Neku disappeared from the RG, so when the new kids welcomed Beat with warm and organic interaction and Beat seemed happy, I started to feel like I wanted to help them out too! I think the overall team chemistry is enjoyable enough for new players, but I could warm up to the new kids more from the pov of a returning character – whom I’m glad to be Beat, as the older brother figure who is genuinely kind, fun, serious and upbeat at the same time; who is needed and needs the kids in return.

The social network is a fun and refreshing feature. You can read all of the crazy tidbits about Shibuya and the links each character have formed with the town people, it’s also fun to visualize how the characters act off screen. Characters’ profiles provide extra insight into their background too, like how it reveals Tsugumi has been friend with Coco during her time in the RG. During the game when not all characters have showed up, you can sometimes guess which empty spot will belong to whom. For example there is a 1 character linking to Neky that is not linked to anyone else, so I could guess that was Joshua, and that another character linking only to Joshua was probably Hazuki, hinting that the 2 Composers are related before either of them even showed up.

Hazuki only showed up for 5 minutes, but his presence is so vital and true to the game that I think he is the most memorable out of the new cast. The two Composers have such an intriguing bond, with their yin/yang or phoenix/dragon themes, opposite color design, the sempai/kouhai tone and the way they keep some sort of distance/work relationship as if it’s mandatory between Higher beings, yet at the same time they can talk so casually because they are truly equal – and different from one another. I have written a separate meta on them here.

Some people pointed out, that all Shinjuku characters’ names and themes are based off Hanafuda cards and the Phoenix in Hanafuda belongs to the Paulownia suit – which is Joshua’s name flower. This is so interesting because it feels like the creators somehow saw it as a sign to interweave the Shibuya and Shinjuku storylines together. Though it doesn’t come out much on the surface, it’s fascinating nonetheless considering both Josh and Haz had at some point interfered with the other town’s affairs.

“Shibuya tour with Haz” was such a special scene, as it happened between 2 characters who do not/no longer have a reason to care about Shibuya, on the subject of what is worth saving about Shibuya. Hazuki carried out the purification of Shinjuku and stepped in to restore Shibuya just as part of his job and unlike Hanekoma or Joshua who both possess profound understanding of humanity, he really didn’t know humans at all. Rindo’s irrational wish invoked in him a sense of curiosity, to try gambling on something irrationally and learning a bit of what his senior have experienced. With all the pieces put together, it provides an overview on Higher beings as a whole, and that Joshua and Hanekoma are really the odd ones out with Hazuki being somewhere in between them and the rest.

The old friends

It’s easy to have returning characters overshadow the new cast as they have already matured out of their personal story arc and stayed in our hearts for all this time. In the end, I have managed to enjoy both the old and new cast separately and altogether, and they will both find their own place in our memory of this game for the long term.

Sho is truly as crazy as ever, the game wouldn’t be the same if Sho is any less of what he is. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like Neky or Beat is younger than Nagi at all, with moments when it seems like Neky has aged 14 years instead of 3 years. His friendship with Coco surprised me pleasantly, and their interaction together with Beat was fun to watch. Rhyme’s found a new dream and her friendship with Kaie is precious too, especially considering that she can still talk to him online after the game ended. Josh and Neku’s interaction suggested that they have resolved the past and are on equal terms now, they even parted ways in good spirit and I don’t feel any worry about them like I did before.

Neku and Shiki’s reunion scene was beautiful, theirs is such a special bond that it has grown and supported them even without being able to see each other. I am so happy to see them all again and that they stay true to who they are, albeit looking more grown up, cooler and happier than ever before.

Overall, NEO can’t become a classic on par with the OG, but is definitely a good sequel and a good game in its own rights. I’m happy with whether or not there will be a 3rd game to complete the 3 monkeys theme, but if there will be – I hope the creators can really find the time to learn from the last 2 games and start over with a fresh mindset and strong core.
