Friday mystery object #472 answer
The answer to last week's #FossilFriday mystery object from the Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo, plus a little about the evolution of hyenas and the taxonomic fun that labels can present.
Last week I gave you this 6 million year old fossil skull to have a go at identifying: The specimen is on display in the geology galleries of the Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo (which is well worth a vist). However, this did mean the photos provided weren’t quite as good as I’d like, particularly notable being the lack of a scale bar (sorry!) Even without a scale, consensus…

Okay here’s a mystery object for you. Do you know what it is - I didn’t.
I picked it up off the footpath this morning. I often pick odd things up on my early morning walk to or from gym but this one stumped me. It’s made of metal.
As soon as Steve saw it he said - it’s a rear view mirror mount for a ute. How does he ‘always’ know these things! He’s as good as Google!

Found a mystery object at Goodwill. It's copper, hollow, no markings. Kinda spoke to me. Worth the $2 for a desk fidget.

After today this is no longer an image on a screen or a hand held toy. It’s now a real object whose size you cannot comprehend unless you’ve seen one. It’s dirty, it’s used, and it’s a Real Thing.

devotion not as worship. but as recognition. as "i want to stand with you, and beside you." as learning. as understanding. as "i want to know you." as "i am making the choice to get to know you." as persistence. as care. as "you are knowable." as "you are lovable." devotion not as idolatry. but devotion as mortality. as a reflection. "you and i, together. equals. partners." devotion as accompaniment. devotion as humanity.

Tourism poster for Mystery Flesh Pit National Park, 1980
From an area tourism book of the era: "While the rural areas of west Texas are known for their sparse populations, one tourist attraction seems to continually generate a steady stream of visitors around vacation seasons. The titular "Mystery Flesh Pit" has been a wellspring of fascination for geologists, biologists, sociologists, engineers and the general public alike. Guests are advised to book age-appropriate tours and activities well in advance of their visit, though the pheromonal discharges and the overall agitation level of the MFP can vary with short notice. Visitors should be advised to be prepared for changes in schedule & availability."

Bonus: Mystery Object
And this is the end! Granted for those of you who have done this book, I’m sure you noticed I skipped over a lot of prompts (like the one with the sounds). This is because I felt they were kind of pointless.
But yeah, this is my completed Pocket Scavenger!

Friday mystery object #469 answer(ish)
A possible answer to last week's mystery object. It's a tricky one, that may require a change of perspective to work out!
Last week, I gave you this devilishly difficult genuine mystery object to have a go at identifying: At first glance, it looks like it should be the occipital (the bone at the very back of the skull) of an Ostrich, or other very large bird. The bone is thin and dense (typical for a bird) and the overall shape and size looks like it might fit. However, none of the details of the bony sutures fit…

That animated bottle of Kikkomon Soy Sauce is a Funco Pop product. I kinda want one.
Oh believe me, I know. I'm not a Pop collector by any means but I do keep up with the new releases because I'm honestly kind of amused by the weird multilayered capitalism that goes into collectible figurines of forgotten advertising mascots. I've had the McDonalds Meal Squad Funko Pops sitting in my drafts folder for a while now because I can't think of a caption weirder than their blank-eyed grins; most "objects with eyes" I just say are Mimics but these are something worse. Haunted? Lingering spirits of a million discarded packages? Beings from beyond in yet another botched "we have chosen a form you would find appealing"?
