It really grates my gears when people try to handwave or excuse the Professor’s neglect of Arven by saying that “Arven was their motivation. Can’t you tell? They had his picture in their lab! And the AI said that they loved him all along! The ‘neglect’ only started when they died!”

No. They were neglectful parents. Period. It didn’t start when they died, and loving Arven does not make it any less abusive.

Because yes, neglect is one of the four widely accepted forms of child abuse.

Do you know what I see when I look at that photo in the Zero Lab? I see a parent who hasn’t seen their child in literal years. Because if they had, why would they not have updated their photograph of him? They’re ‘doing it for him’ yes, I can grant you that, but they’re ‘doing it for’ the small child that he was when they left him.

And people seem to be overlooking the fact that you can love someone and still abuse them??? Like, it’s not always a conscious thing??? The Professor may have loved him, but they were always so emotionally and physically unavailable that Arven has zero memory of them paying him attention as a child.

Even when they were home, they didn’t act like a parent. All he remembers is being alone with his dog, always.

It wasn’t ‘working long hours to afford the necessities’. It wasn’t ‘putting in long hours and coming home in time to feed him and put him to bed’. It was ‘I am on the cusp of a scientific breakthrough and nothing will stop me from achieving this’.

Do you know what we call it in the real world when a single parent ignores their child in favour of pursuing their own career goals?

Neglect.

on her first day on the job, actually before even clocking in, she made her first arrest like the badass she is.

she has an extremely strained relationship with her parents, who are both therapists. they are openly unsupportive of her career choice — even ashamed to claim her as their daughter.

omniglot (english, spanish, cantonese, tagalog, french), she is fluent in the first four languages and can read/knows french enough to understand.

she taught herself french just so she could follow the aaron thorsen case.

that's how determined / committed she can be.

before joining the police academy she was a psychology major in college.

she completed the dea covert operations training academy & has already worked a few (short-term) undercover cases.

she is idealistic and sees people (initially) in a good light, but she is not a complete pushover. when pushed, she will shove if she feels the other is not correct.

Rei’s only living family member that isn’t further up in the family tree. He was busy at home when the accident happened and was one of the first few people on the scene after help was called. While Rei was in the hospital, he often visited her when he got the chance and was actually there with her when she woke up.

He was a third-year at Yasogami at the time of the accident; this means he would be a graduate when Rei starts school. As mentioned, Yamato was the only one out of the three elder members of the family that gave Rei the care and attention that their parents didn’t. He was excited to have a sister so it made him really upset when their parents didn’t share the same sentiment. For her sake, he took up the mantle so that Rei was still cared for.

This definitely added onto the stress of keeping up in school. Having to balance caring for his sister and doing his school work was a lot. Adding the death of their parents on top of that was much more weight on his shoulders. Luckily a lot of it was eased when their paternal aunt took them in. She was much more attentive to both of them compared to their parents and was appalled to hear about how much Rei was neglected.

Life became easier for the both of them from then on. When P5′s timeframe comes around and Rei eventually moves to Tokyo with assistance from the Kirijo Group, she was able to bring her brother along. The two keep in contact with their aunt and their Inaba friends. Yamato attends university while Rei kickstarts her maid cafe career.
