Cryptid of the Day: Ninki Nanka
Description: Throughout West Africa, there’s an oral history of large, reptilian creatures called the Ninki Nanka. The beast is said to live in swamps & abduct lost children. In 2006, an expedition was conducted by the Centre for Fortean Zoology, though only sightings were collected

Tumblr media
“Swamp Dragon” © Davey Baker, accessed at his ArtStation here
[The ninki nanka is an example of what I was talking about with the fantasies about Africa influencing its cast of monsters. If you ask a cryptozoologist, a ninki nanka is some sort of giant reptile, maybe a dinosaur or monitor lizard. If you ask an actual Mandinka person, they will tell you that it’s a powerful and intelligent being, controller of weather and blesser of kings. Much more interesting than just another relict swamp dinosaur that fits better with paleontology that went out of date in the 1960s.]
Ninki Nanka CR 14 LN Dragon This great draconic creature has four short legs and is slung low to the ground. It is covered with black scales, with flecks of golden and silver scales among them. It has two long horns growing from its head.
A ninki nanka is an aquatic tropical dragon that meddles in the affairs of the people who live in its wide territory. It rarely deigns to interfere in the lives of commoners, but feels very strongly about the rulership of the people who live there. A ninki nanka considers itself a kingmaker, and if it is not consulted to give its authorization to the local king, it will make life difficult for the people that king rules. Ninki nankas have a variety of magic powers, which they can use to bless those they approve of and vex those they do not. If a ninki nanka is particularly impressed with a potential mortal ruler, it will bestow a magical scale upon them that enhances their Charisma and can conjure great treasures…at the cost of the ninki nanka being able to check in on them whenever the dragon wishes.
A ninki nanka views combat as an interesting challenge and diversion at times, but usually only uses a fraction of its power. Typically it tries to just kill enemies with its jaws and horns, or blast them with its rainbow breath, which carries multiple types of destructive energy. Anyone who survives the ninki nanka’s initial assault is seen as more worthy, whereupon the dragon begins to draw upon its magical powers. Ninki nankas do not hesitate to flee from a losing fight, but will return later and call upon allies to help it take revenge.
Ninki nankas come in all alignments, but most of them are lawful. Good ninki nankas only support kings who are good to their subjects, and evil ninki nankas value might and cunning about kindness and mercy. There are a few chaotic ninki nankas; these bestow their favor on potential rulers who will shake up and change their societies, whether for better or worse depending on the moral alignment or the whims of the dragon. Like most dragons, ninki nankas value treasure, and those wishing to court their favor usually give them gifts. It eats gold and other precious metals, incorporating them into its scales. When a ninki nanka is slain, a treasure value equal to the normal amount for a creature of its CR can be extracted from its hide with a successful DC 25 Craft (metalworking) or Survival check. There are few creatures strong enough to simply hunt ninki nankas for their hides.

One of these is always the Nobility domain, but the other two domains vary between individuals. The ninki nanka can only choose an alignment domain if its alignment matches the domain. A ninki nanka can use the 1st and 2nd level spells as spell like abilities at will, the 3rd, 4th and 5th level spells as spell-like abilities 3/day, and the 6th and 7th level spells as spell like abilities 1/day. If two of its domains grant the same spell, it increases the amount of times it can use this to the next step. For example, if a ninki nanka has both the Liberation and Luck domain, it would be able to use break enchantment and freedom of movement at will. Rainbow Breath (Su) As a standard action, a ninki nanka can breathe multicolored energy in a 60 foot line. Any creature in the area takes 3d8 points of acid damage, 3d8 points of cold damage, 3d8 points of electricity damage, 3d8 points of fire damage and 3d8 points of sonic damage. A ninki nanka can use this ability three times per day, but must wait 1d4 rounds between uses. Scale of Splendor (Su) A ninki nanka can shed a single scale as a full round action, which acts as a rod of splendor for a single individual designated by the ninki nanka. A ninki nanka can view whoever carries the scale at will as per a scrying spell (Will DC 24 negates). This functions for any creature who holds the scale, whether they are designated to use it or not. A ninki nanka can only have one scale of splendor at a time. The scale is an object with a hardness of 6 and 5 hit points.

November's other mythological/folklore creature coloring page was the Ninki Nanka which is from folklore around the gambia river in the republic of gambia. I'm endlessly fascinated by the convergent evolution of folklore between world cultures- almost everywhere has a lake monster myth of some kind that fills a similar purpose (usually to warn children/people of swimming in a dangerous area) but their descriptions vary wildly based on the environment/culture that birthed them (and the ambient wildlife to a certain extent- but I think just reducing folklore monsters to "oh well scary real animal lives here so it must be from that" is kind of flattening to the depths of human creativity too).
These are said to live in swamps and eat/swallow naughty children who might wander into their territory. Descriptions vary* -it's often described as "dragon like" (which is real subjective, because what is a dragon really? it depends) with the body of a crocodile, horse or giraffe-like head, horns and a huge mouth. Hippos have huge mouths and are considerably more terrifying than crocodiles when you really look at them (they just seem to have better pr) so I ended up incorporating elements of hippos, crocodiles and then taking some liberties to make it into more of its own thing and less a chimeric looking thing (more dragon-y).
prints will be available in my kofi shop | to see art sooner & get lots of neat rewards, consider becoming a patron! | please do not repost
*another thing i love about folklore is you get lots of different iterations of the same idea even within one culture too! there is almost never one canon idea/concept, just lots of different versions that are all correct and valid.

Ninki Nanka
With the body of a crocodile, neck of a giraffe and three strong horns, the Ninki Nanka lurks in the swamps of Western Africa. Unlike other myths, the Ninki Nanka preys exclusively on children, and the child that disobeys can shortly expect to become the Ninki Nanka’s victim.
In some accounts the Ninki Nanka is more draconic than anything else, however it is difficult to find an accurate portrayal of the creature as myth states that any who see it die. This death can either come quickly, or within four years of seeing it, however once you see the Ninki Nanka your death is inevitable.

24! Ninki Nanka!
Didn’t get very far with this one, but still wanted to upload him. At this point I was still working on Tortoise and Eastern, while still trying to keep up with the rest of the challenges. I hadn’t done any new digital drawings in a while, So I decided to make this one digital. But all the problems piled up, and I couldn’t get much further than a sketch and some very simple shadows.
The Ninki Nanka is a dragon from the swamps, but I didn’t know how to really express that other than making a background. So I decided to drop this and focus on my future drawings more.

Are the Ninki Nanka, Jabberwocky and/or Jabberwocky in Dracones Mundi?
Ninki Nanka is in a 'maybe' pile, as in it's got as far as my "I have notes about it" but not as far as "I have written a detailed chapter about it". At this point my 'maybe' pile is my 'probably not' pile, as I aim to finish this project as soon as I can - the reason I haven't done more on Ninki Ninka is I cannot find very many resources on it.
The Jabberwock, as far as I am aware, was invented purely by Lewis Carroll, and I tend not to put direct fan-dragons in Dracones Mundi itself - with the exception of maybe a luck dragon inspired by Michael Ende's Neverending Story, although I might just have a throwaway line saying that leucistic stollenwyrms (catlike dragons from Europe) can be called 'luck dragons' (luck dragons were white/pink/pearlescent dragons with leoline faces in the book, so a white dragon with a catlike face may be similar enough? Die Unendlichegeschichte is a German story so stollenwyrms/tatzelwyrms would tie into that).
The Jabberwock poem may have been based on legends of the Sockburn Wyrm and the Lambton Wyrm (both 'local legends' for me as I'm from the north of England), and I have included those wyrms in Dragones Mundi already (English Groundwyrm being a subspecies of European Lindwyrm).
The Jabberwocky Poem starts thus:
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.
Which, according to this website (which is better at analysing language than I am!) means it was boiling, and the lithe badgerlike animals in the ground were writhing and scratching around - this could mean that the jabberwock itself was poisoning the land in a similar way to a basilisk of legend.
Aside from this, we know the jabberwock burbles (dragons in Dracones Mundi can rumble, so I imagine burbling is an option too!) has 'eyes aflame' (dragons in my book have eyeshine) and jaws that bite (classic for crocodylomorphs). The line 'claws which catch' gives me pause, as dragon paws in Dracones Mundi are not very dexterous. The wyverns have paws which can grab branches and perhaps grab prey, but most of my dragons have very crocodylian paws, made for walking, digging and paddling moreso than 'catching'. A jabberwock in Dracones Mundi would therefore either be a lindwyrm (to bring the poem back to it's inspirations) or a wyvern (so it can have 'claws that catch').
The very famous John Tenniel illustration of the jabberwock gives it the '4 legs 2 wings' configuration of a firedrake, but due to the un-crocodylomorph' body stance and rodent-like teeth, it would not fit into the same family as other firedrakes in the project.

[WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN]
Before its cancellation, plans for a fourth and potentially final season of Martin Mystery was in the works from Marathon Media and years later, they were eventually leaked out and later confirmed to be true from the creators:
Tumblr media
• Season 4 in a change of pace, would've been serialized by having stories that would span multiple episodes and make mini-arcs with them comparing it to the fifth and final season of Totally Spies!, another show of theirs.
• In one of the mini-arcs, we would have saw the return of the Gatekeeper who was last seen in the Season 2 finale which ended on a cliffhanger with him infiltrating the Center with the storyline picking that up with Martin and Billy uncovering it in a conspiracy within the Center itself.
• Others that would've happened were Jenni and returning characters Michelle Dubois, Darla and Kaitlin becoming new agents for the Center, an episode set in Chinatown that would've been an homage to John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China, creatures such as the Jersey Devil, mermaids that steal souls and the Ninki Nanka were to be included but in their own different ways, it was going to be revealed that the Center was founded by the first President Of The United States themselves, George Washington himself.
• A new character that would've been introduced and be added to the main cast is Troy — a british gymnast who died of a broken neck back in the 80s but is accidentally brought back to life by Diana and is now a corpse without half of his body and a snapped neck that is has to use duc tape to keep said head up. No, seriously.
• Now one major storyline that would've changed the show and recontextualize it is that while Martin figures it all out by himself, Diana discovers that M.O.M. is in fact her mother and his step-mother. The latter is already on thin ice and working her way to the top with the help of Martin after the Octavia Paine incident but at the end of one of the mini-arcs, Diana discovers this to her shock, disbelief and horror, only be immediately "caught" and kidnapped by M.O.M. who appears right behind her out of the shadows in her room. M.O.M. reveals that she wiped her family's memories of her and has kept them in stasis in order to keep their relationship from interfering with her role as head of the Center, leading to more of M.O.M.'s character being fleshed out which shows her as a strict and morally grey but loving and caring woman who will equally do anything to keep the Center afloat and anything to keep her family safe to which she's called out on by Diana for all of the things that she's been through and all of the things that's happened to her, leading M.O.M. to question herself. To show what kind of drama we're dealing with and were to be dealing with, an episode would've ended with just M.O.M. and Diana driving in a car with the former driving and the latter sitting next to her, Diana apologizes for everything that has just happened and M.O.M. says she know she is and that she's her daughter and nothing will ever change that, she'll always love and care for her no matter what and nothing will ever change that as well but from this point forward to she don't know when, her trust is something Diana is going to have to earn back. Diana hangs her head down in shame as M.O.M. drives off emotionless.
Oh, and M.O.M.'s real name is revealed to be Olivia Lombard.

Nightmare Fuel: Iterations of the Boogeyman in (Almost) Every Country
Tumblr media
Kids playing up? Sometimes positive reinforcement isn’t going to cut it. Sometimes, you need to bring in the big guns.
The Boogeyman. Krampus. Ninki Nanka. These frightening figures are found all over the world, where they’re available to enforce discipline at a moment’s notice. Luckily, the mere mention of a local boogeyman’s name — the Bunyip in Australia, China’s Grandmother Tiger — is sure to bring an errant preschooler into line before they can be whipped away in a sack/eaten/soul-sucked…

The more I ignore eclipse dreams, the more out of pocket they get like what? 😂 like I know (for me personally) not to take them seriously because they're usually just a representation of how potent the energy is but a great explanation for why it's too much to be controlled for rituals and spell work (it's not impossible though).
But anyways, I had a dream that this guy, who I've never met, and I were fighting a Ninki Nanka in a river.
When it comes to fighting entities solely or with other people, I always win, but I hate dreams like this where I'm in graveyards and eery places because even though I'm lucid dreaming it's not a good feeling to have when you sense you're in somewhere you don't think you should be.
What has been your experience with dreams from this eclipse?
