At what point in time did you see a giant hammer and go “yeah, that’s my main.”
Monster Hunter: World is a 2018 action role-playing game developed and published by Capcom. The fifth mainline installment in the Monster Hunter series, it was released worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2018, with a Windows version following in August 2018. In the game, the player takes the role of a Hunter, tasked to hunt down and either kill or trap monsters that roam in one of several environmental spaces. If successful, the player is rewarded through loot consisting of parts from the monster and other elements that are used to craft weapons and armor, amongst other equipment. The game's core loop has the player crafting appropriate gear to be able to hunt down more difficult monsters, which in turn provide parts that lead to more powerful gear. Players may hunt alone or in a group of up to four players via the game's online multiplayer.
Announced at E3 2017, Monster Hunter: World adopts the series' standard formulas from its older home console roots and recent handheld games to take advantage of the higher processing power provided by modern consoles and computers. Changes made in Monster Hunter: World include creating environmental spaces that are fully connected and removing the "zones" that were necessary for the PlayStation 2 and handheld games, more advanced monster artificial intelligence and physics, a more persistent cooperative multiplayer experience, and a refinement of the game's tutorials and user interface to help with bringing new players into the series. These changes led Capcom to plan for the game's simultaneous release worldwide, since Monster Hunter as a series has generally languished outside of Japan partially due to disparate release schedules. Capcom also opted to support online play between these different geographic regions for similar reasons. The delay for the Windows release was attributed to Capcom seeking to make sure its first foray into the Windows market was optimized for players on computers. By April 2020, updates to the game were synchronized among all platforms.
Monster Hunter: World received critical acclaim upon release, with critics praising how Capcom was able to make the game more accessible to new players and to Western markets, without detracting from the series' core gameplay elements and enjoyable difficulty, and fully taking advantage of the computational capacity of modern consoles to create living ecosystems, with some even calling it the best in the franchise. Monster Hunter: World is the single highest-selling game in Capcom's history, with over 21 million copies shipped by July 2022. A DLC expansion pack, subtitled Iceborne, was released for home consoles in September 2019 and for Windows in January 2020, and reached 10 million sales by December 2022. The next mainline installment, Monster Hunter Rise, was co-developed alongside World and announced for a worldwide release on Nintendo Switch in March 2021, with a Windows version released the following year.

Since E3 is now officially dead, what's your opinion on gaming conventions and their function/place in the industry, etc?
I'm curious about your opinion as someone who works in the game industry and also just a consumer.
Well I'm just a low level employee so I've never gone to big trade shows or conventions / conferences like E3, PAX, or GDC like my bosses or my friends have, my sole experience is with local conventions.
I've never gone to a convention as a visitor either. I've always been an exhibitor in those and man do they get exhausting—it's 3 full days straight of total sensory overload from booming music to gigantic crowds that you can't step away from since you've got to man your booth. That said, these public events are the only ones that will continue on into the future, aside from events like GDC that are more about the trade of game development rather than as marketing for games.
As time passes, I see less and less reasons for closed event trade shows, to be honest. E3's been dead way before this official announcement. As soon as Nintendo pivoted to making their Direct presentations, that was the beginning of the end for E3, since it meant big publishers can stream everything online now while having complete control over the whole show. With E3 being a closed event which essentially relied on game journalists to be their marketing for the public, it was bound to fall behind once social media made following news ever easier.
On the other hand I think conventions still have their place, especially when you show up with a demo. While lining up a bunch of people to go try out your game won't get you nearly as many views as marketing it online, there's just something special to the live interaction (both as part of the audience and as a developer) that builds hype like nothing else does.
Also, the short time between you're allowed in to set up your booth but the visitors aren't allowed in yet is when all the cool perks of being an exhibitor happens. (And the afterparties of course, but those aren't meant to be shared)
One really fond memory I have is back in 2018, Capcom was bringing Devil May Cry 5's demo around the circuit convention, including one I was in. Since I was an exhibitor we were there hours before the audience would be allowed in, which meant that as soon as Capcom finished setting up, DMC5 would be right there without a line.
I put up our posters and laptops as fast as I could and ran on over, only to find two other guys there with one of them already playing the demo. As the first guy finished, clearly an old fan from how quickly they got the hang of Nero, he turned around with this light on his face and said "It's... It's really good!"
And when a series has been gone for ten years with a controversial Western reboot in the middle, it feels so reassuring to see someone who has just as much riding on this as you do tell you it's good while handing you the controller. There's a real spark of magic in that kind of interaction that no Direct can replicate.
I also got to take a selfie with Igarashi of Castlevania fame, hat and all. Fuck yeah.

Did a Potential Overhaul in the Post-Timeskip Cutscenes mess up with 3H's Development? - Development Mystery/Theory
Back in 2021, Nintendo released a video called Fire Emblem : Vol 1 to celebrate the franchise's 30th anniversary. And around 30:35, the video shows the 3H Movie "Rematch", used for Chapter 17 of the Azure Moon and Verdant Wind routes.
With a catch.
It's not the same one that ended up on the final game:
Tumblr media
A glimpse into an alternate reality?
People went wild back when they noticed Edelgard and Claude in this version are using the outfits of their Emperor & Barbsrossa classes rather than the Armored Lord and Wyvern Master ones seen in the game we got, leading to much speculation surrounding what this meant for Three Houses. And it goes without saying that, while unseen, fans suspect that Dimitri uses his Great Lord outfit rather than the High Lord's in this version. So... The heck is up with this movie???
Well, as uncovered by VincentASM from sereneforest.net, it's highly likely this take of the movie shown in the promotional Nintendo/FE video is from an early build of the game. A build so early, that Edelgard skin and eyes were more saturated, and characters still didn't use unique palettes when using generic classes (which was incidentally used in February's JP Nintendo Direct of 2019).
Tumblr media
Your call as for which version looks better.
It doesn't just end there though; if Three Houses' datamine is anything to go by - namely, the internal order the classes have in the code - we can find evidence that can answer why the endgame lord classes were used in this variation rather than the "middle ones" early on: simply put, Armored Lord, High Lord, and Wyvern Master did not exist during most of 3H' development. In turn, this explains why the Flame Emperor Class - Edelgard's enemy-only class for Part 1 - is internally, a model swap of her Emperor class rather than Armored Lord's: the latter didn't exist during development of Part 1, so Emperor was used as a base instead.
With this evidence uncovered and the answer giving resolution to the promotional footage shown, hopes waned down for the future of 3H, and everyone moved on.
This raises two questions I haven’t seen anyone point out before, though.
How much (if any) did this change mess up the post-timeskip movies? Is it the reason why the Silver Snow Theorem happened?
To explain these inquiries further, I'll go into greater detail about each one:
1. Two Types of Animated Movies.
Tumblr media
Corporate needs you to find the differences between these two pictures.
Three Houses uses 2 types of animated movies for important scenes. The first one (see the one on the left), was done in-house by KT through pre-rendering shenanigans with the 3H engine. Meanwhile, the second one (on the right) was outsourced to SANZIGEN.
The distinction between both is relevant because the movie showcased in the FE Castle Conversations video - as well its final version - belong to the former category. Meaning that, should the character designs get tweaked during development, in the best case scenario, as far IS & KT were concerned, swapping models should be enough to keep things up to date, which might as well be what happened with the "Rematch" movie once the House Leader's main post-timeskip designs were swapped.
But what about tweaking the other type of movies, though? The ones commissioned to the animation studio? I can't imagine the whole process being cheap in their case, more so given that 8 out of the 11 movies commissioned to SANZIGEN feature the 3H lords post-timeskip:
Tumblr media
What's important here is that ☆ = Doesn't feature any 3H lord in any capacity.
Granted, the smartest course of action in this instance would've been to simply commission the post-timeskip movies near the end of development to avoid consistency/revision issues, for which there is a plausible chance that’s the case. After all, in the E3 2018 trailer for the game - which was the first instance we ever saw footage of it - the only animated movie outsourced seen was the one from the intro.
But... What if that’s not the case?
Call me paranoid if you want, but I raise this worry for a reason-
2. "The Theorem of What?????"
Tumblr media
Love this banner so much.
A few months ago I did a breakdown on how 3H distributes it's movies across routes, and if there's anything that stood up a ton besides the predictable stuff, is that the game followed a clear pattern which determined which routes would get the most movies, versus which ones would get screwed instead. In my breakdown, I coined this pattern "The Silver Snow Theorem" which proposes the following:
"The amount of movies and fullscreen CGs present in a route’s main story by Part 2, is directly and inversely proportional respectively, to how much the narrative follows Silver Snow’s story beats."
And as a refresher, Silver Snow matters to the development of Three Houses because: A. That's the first route the developers worked on; and B. was used as the basis for the other 3:
Which route specifically did you create in the beginning to establish the world-building? Kusakihara: It was one of the two paths in the Empire route—the one fans refer to as the “church route”: “Silver Snow” [...] afterwards, we had Koei Tecmo’s scripting team start work on the nitty-gritty of the other house leaders and the story of their respective routes.
While Silver Snow having this much influence over the Part 2 movies is noticeable in hindsight, truth be told, I did initially brush it off as just a side effect of being used as a template for development. Looking back now though, a part of me now wonders if the Part 2 movies were first commissioned once Silver Snow was late into development and AM and VW had been already decided to borrow a ton from the route’s first half. Because if that’s the case, then there might have been cutscenes outsourced to SANZIGEN that did feature Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude with their second post-timeskip lord classes rather than one ones fans are most familiar with.
But then, it was decided during development that the house leaders would rather use different outfits instead. And this might have caused problems with budget since changing those outsourced cutscenes ain’t an easy task compared to the ones KT made in-house.
Tumblr media
Like, seriously.
Goes without saying that all this is merely conjecture. But I feel it’s worth making the question because, to reiterate, the Silver Snow Theorem highlights that the more a route follows Silver Snow’s story beats to a tee, the more animated cutscenes (and less CGs) it gets. And given evidence points out the lord’s main post-timeskip classes fans are familiar with were a late addition… I guess y’all know where I’m going by now.
I usually don’t make threads focusing on fan theories and stuff, but this has been in my mind for a long while so I wanted to see what you guys think about it. Do you think more movies with the lord’s 2nd classes got made before the outfit swap was made? Or perhaps the issue the devs ran with that caused the Silver Snow Threorem might be due to something else entirely…? Also, what's y'all's opinion on SANZIGEN's movies compared to the ones done by KT?

Todays rip: 25/01/2024
Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that
Season 3 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips Volume A
Ripped by Grambam36, Twonko
youtube
Late last year, we received official confirmation that the Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3, was no more. The signs were everywhere, as they'd failed to hold any meaningful event past the pandemic and were fumbling even before then, yet it was still kind of sad to see the news spelled out officially - that the gaming community's Christmas Day was going away forever, in favor of the more condensed, streamlined, and in general a lot less charming Summer Games Fest. And yeah, the excitement for game reveals and trailers is still prominent with Keighley's shows, though a tool he may be, but...there was a sort of memetic energy to the E3 shows in particular, the per-company press conferences that were always subtly coated in delicious cringe, those are now effectively lost. Though the show may be lost, the memories remain - and I'll always remember just how fun each of the SiIvaGunner channel's per-show channel events were, from Season 1 to Season 4 Episode 1.
I did indeed cover a rip related to the E3 show once before on here, with Take Me Home, Country Snow - a rip focusing on the ever-memetic quality of Bethesda's Todd Howard. That's a well-spread joke in the gaming community, yet Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that focuses on far more of an in-joke, one finally meeting its natural endpoint after years of build-up: Ridley, before his debut in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, being criticized as being far too big to be fit for the game's roster. "Bigley" became a minor meme on the Miiverse forums on Wii U/3DS, and it was just generally a very funny idea to spread about - that a character was simply too massive to ever possibly be able to be used in fighting.
It's likely that Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that wasn't even made with the intention of releasing after Ridley's reveal during Nintendo's 2018 E3 show, but withholding the rip to release it with the perfect timing just adds to the joke even further - the visuals of the rip present Ridley as the surprise new character, only to reveal that his character size is so astronomically big that the game literally cannot load him into a match. The rip's audio joke itself is initially based on a Season 1 classic, Vs. Meta Horat, mashing up Ridley's theme with The Nutshack theme, before taking on a very patently Twonko twist - you may recognize his name from Crompton Racing, and back when he was still with the channel he was one of the biggest proponents and contributors to making Jake Paul a recurring joke on the channel. The rip effectively turns into a - funny enough - BIGGER version of Vs. Meta Horat, still featuring The Nutshack prominently, but overriding it with It's Everyday Bro and other sources. Most notably, and funniest to me personally, is the line iconic to many Smash Bros. fans of the time before Ultimate's release - "RIDLEY'S BIG AS SHIT!".
I talked yesterday about the feeling of, admiring rips and media in general from a distance - that I'm able to love rips like Guilty Eyes Creeper despite holding no real attachment to the Love Live franchise or its music. Yet with clips from Shokio's old infamous Ridley discussion video, that voicebyte that was heard so often in so many hilarious contexts before even the release of Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS, it does feel oh so rewarding to feel fully in-on-the-joke with Too big, huh, my nuts are too big how about that. The signature styles of the two rippers of course helps make it an immensely fun listen, but it really was just the comedic timing of the moment and execution of the joke that sealed the deal for this becoming one of my favorite 2018 rips.

Was recently replaying some of the No More Heroes games on Switch, and remembered the hype leading up to No More Heroes III. Do you remember any speculation or theories about the game leading up to it's release? I remember the big one was a leaked screenshot from one of the visual novel segments showing what seemed to be Young Harman Smith.
WARNING: This post contains spoilers for No More Heroes 3 as well as Flower, Sun, and Rain.
I remember that! I don't blame folks for thinking that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I recall thinking it might be Aramata from Moonlight Syndrome, not that it would make much sense if it was.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I recall a few other theories. A lot of people--including myself--were expecting appearances by the likes of Kusabi or Kuroyanagi. This speculation came from the end of the first NMH3 trailer from E3 2019 when Sylvia was calling out codenames at the end.
Tumblr media
"The Tiger has awakened . . . red, green, dark, black, blood."
In The 25th Ward remake, as well as a few other stories Suda has written recently, many characters were given color codenames to represent them. Midori Midorikawa, a boss in NMH3, went by Green. Kuroyanagi goes by Black, etc. Of course, perhaps people--including myself-- just jumped the gun because now this can basically be a way of describing the alien goons and the multi-colored blood they tend to spill out.
Tumblr media
A lot of us were also giving credence to Travis Strikes Again and how so many characters appeared in the visual novel segments, thinking everything was going to merge even more-so in NMH3. Although, Suda has said that he originally was going to have more connections, before they got cut.
Tumblr media
I like to think is mostly because Suda can't retain rights to NMH so he'd probably rather wait for an IP he actually owns to encompass what he's established before. Either way, not a lot of this world-merging stuff really makes sense, so these days I'll take it or leave it. Suda has also stated he considers TSA a 'commemorative' title to Grasshopper, hence having so many characters invited to make cameos and such.
Here's one possible example of a removed cameo, the fine folks at believeinthe.net data-mined NMH3 and found a lot of unused emails. Here's one of them;
Tumblr media
People that played Flower, Sun, and Rain can think of one particular talking alligator!
Tumblr media
Screenshot from AdrianVG's dual-playthrough of FSR
I recall another theory, while not directly related to games outside of NMH, that Travis was going to essentially make amends with past villains like Destroyman and Kimmy in order to form his own team to take on Fu and his cronies. And not only that, but every new friend he'd make would utilize the NMH motel as their home base. This came from early previews showing Bad Girl and Shinobu had their own rooms there as well.
Tumblr media
We thought this because one of the taglines from an earlier trailer;
Tumblr media
From the first NMH3 Nintendo Direct Trailer, October 2020
"The Hood" as in people from Santa Destroy. Travis' hood. Didn't really happen, as Travis primarily fought everyone by himself. There was no real team-up until the near-end of the game.
Tumblr media
I just remembered one last theory, that Tokio Morishima was in the game. This came from the very first piece of gameplay we saw all the way back in 2019.
Tumblr media
From the NMH3 trailer first shown at The Game Awards 2019
I understand why people thought this, the spiky hair did remind me of Tokio.
Tumblr media
Of course, what people didn't know at the time was that it was Henry, who was redesigned by Takashi Miyamoto, lead artist for The Silver Case and The 25th Ward.
Tumblr media
At the very least, we did get to see previously established characters appear in NMH3, such as Midori Midorikawa, who Suda first wrote about back in 2018. Although the first time she was visually depicted was in the manga adapting that original story he wrote about 3 years later, but several months before No More Heroes 3 released.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Kamui! At least a version of him, that whole thing is kind of finnicky. Also Notorious, from the Fire Pro Wrestling World DLC on PS4/PC.
Tumblr media
These were the only theories I could recall myself. There could be more, but these were the ones I was most privy to. Thanks for your question!

Tactician Magician ✨📚
For my very first post on my Tumblr blog I want to write about my dear husband Robin and how we came to be: In non-Fire Emblem Awakening lore, aka the real world, it all began when I saw Robin in his Smash Brothers reveal trailer in my middle school years. I remember being so in awe when I saw him floating down after casting Elwind at Captain Falcon, and I thought he looked so amazing and like a moth to a flame. I was instantly drawn to him. In the very beginning, I kept my crush on the tactician Magician to myself because I thought people would believe me to be a loon, and because of that train of thought for the longest time, I repressed my feelings for Robin as I forced myself to ship a pairing that left quite a bittersweet taste in my mouth. That ship was Robcina, and whenever I saw shipart of them together, it felt as if my heart broke a void filled, but I persisted in forcing myself to ship it even though it hurt me. Overtime I curshed on actual guys and some other characters, but I don't think my crush on Robin ever truly left, even though it felt that way, and from time to time I thought about him, but it was one fateful day on March 8th, 2018 that Nintendo teased Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at the end of one of their directs, and it made me remember how much I loved playing as Robin in Smash 4, but then something else stirred within, and it was a feeling of worry and sadness. I thought in my head "why am I worried Robin won't come back to roster?" before Nintendo revealed that EVERONE was coming back my mind raced a little and I wished Robin would come back because not only was he an amazing addition to the roster, but my crush on him came flooding back like Niagara Falls. I truly realized how much he meant to me as the time came when Ultimate was revealed in June of 2018 at E3 by then I secretly drew ship art of Robin and myself, but I wasn't fully public about it yet as it felt more like a self indulgence. Fast forward to May 12th, 2020 I stumbled upon a post by the instagram account lovnmm_selfshipping and they had an art even for selfshipping and at first I contemplated about it, but then I posted my first doodle of Robin and I together! Posting it I felt happy and others seem to love us and the bond we shared! And then one after another I started to draw Robin and I more and more where he just became my muse and I realized I always loved Robin~ I will admit that our realtionship isn't all smooth sailing as we've had bumps in the road from shippers and a ship scare in FEH (people saying it was canon even though it's not) we've stuck by each other and the fact a sweet humble tactician like him chose me to be his wife I couldn't feel more honored and proud to bear that title and be his~ 💜💚🐺🐾

One thing I'm currently obsessed with: The Smash Bros. displays at this year's Nintendo Live event :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If these look familiar to you, that's because these are the same displays that were shown back in E3 2018, when Smash Ultimate was first revealed :3
These photos were taken from the official Nintendo of America Twitter account.
Okay a day later and I am still thinking about this
Gosh I wish I was here, I would take pictures with all the displays

I hesitated to watch that gameplay showcase of Tears of the Kingdom at first because I really didn't want any more spoilers for the game, Nintendo is... REALLY bad about spoiling everything before a game launches, like they gave away almost everything in BOTW, and they were really good about TOTK for a change.
But i'm glad I watched it, I am incredibly hyped now. After we got our first look at the game in E3 2018 I was excited but every look at the game after kind of made me apprehensive. But now that I see more gameplay and less story, i'm excited again, especially now that I know there's even more crazy and creative shit we can do. One of the best things about BOTW was seeing how inventive we could be in solving problems in the game. Now it feels like that's going to be the entire point of the game and I love it.
I actually started replaying BOTW two days ago, and that's also kind of helping my hype, because man I love that game... I kind of forgotten exactly why for a while there, the big open world to explore was certainly part of it, but it's really all about the advanced tricks you can do and how elements and items and physics and enemies all play together, and even unintended things like how doing a shield surf mid jump is almost a bit of a double jump. TOTK is likely going to have so much crazy shit like that, I cannot wait.

My 2024 Nintendo Wishlist | Gaming Instincts
The arrival of a brand new yr is all the time an thrilling time. With the entire of 2024 to look ahead to, meaning a complete lot of time to be excited for what might simply be across the nook. It’s an excessive amount of enjoyable to invest what might come subsequent within the gaming sphere, given how stacked the yr of 2023 was for gaming. Nintendo had a very loaded yr this time round, with entries from flagship collection like Tremendous Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Hearth Emblem, and Pikmin. With these heavy-hitters already at bat the yr prior, it may be comprehensible to anticipate 2024 to be a a lot quieter affair altogether.  Nonetheless, that doesn’t imply the Nintendo fan in me can’t provide you with issues to be enthusiastic about within the coming yr. Understand that the next are simply my opinion with a wholesome dosage of copium. Right here’s what I hope to see from Nintendo in 2024.
3. Metroid Prime 4 Information
The story of Metroid Prime 4 is an extended and attempting story. Being introduced again in 2017 through the 2017 Nintendo Direct (and likewise through the Change’s heyday), Metroid Prime 4 has since then sunken beneath the waves of growth hell. However to say simply that might solely be telling half the story. When introduced, Metroid Prime 4 was manned by collection producer Kensuke Tanabe and developed by Bandai Namco Studios of Singapore and Japan. Followers of the Metroid Prime video games will discover that this workforce doesn't embody Retro Studios, the workforce liable for the Prime Trilogy.Prime takes a departure from the collection’ facet scrolling roots, ditching the 2D platforming airplane and elevating the collection with the first-person shooter perspective; and this inventive distinction occurred by happenstance. The Texas-based studio occurred to be creating a third-person capturing journey recreation with a feminine protagonist that caught Shigeru Miyamoto’s consideration in spite of everything different Retro tasks did not impress him.  Retro Studios would then undergo a studio culling, shedding staff and canceling tasks to prioritize Metroid Prime. Regardless of rocky setbacks and the criticism of skeptics, the modern first-person journey recreation would develop into the most effective promoting Metroid recreation of all time till Metroid Dread. However Metroid is a collection that all the time appears to face obstacles within the growth pipeline. In 2018, Metroid Prime 4 was purported to be continuing as deliberate, no less than based on then Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime. Although he prefaced his statements with phrases like “effectively into growth” and “continuing effectively,” the shortage of footage to indicate off at that yr’s E3 had followers anxious. These issues could be based later in 2019 when Nintendo EPD common supervisor Shinya Takahashi gave the unlucky information of Metroid Prime 4’s venture restart. In line with Takahashi, the work Bandai Namco Singapore and Japan had achieved as much as that time was lower than the corporate’s excessive requirements. Although Takahashi did say that the choice was not made simply, the restart was in the end known as for in the long run. On this darkish time, Takahashi assured followers that Metroid Prime’s unique builders could be introduced again to deal with the monumental process. However “introduced again” is getting used loosely right here. The Retro Studios that crafted the unique Metroid Prime Trilogy just isn't the Retro Studios that exists right this moment. The first Retro expertise behind these video games, designer/director Mark Pacini and artwork director Todd Keller, left Retro Studios in 2008 shortly after Metroid Prime 3: Corruption launched. So as to add onto this, Retro Studios has been on the hunt since 2020 for key builders and expertise they might add to their workforce to help within the growth of Metroid Prime 4. The diploma of positions Retro was in search of confirmed each how far again Metroid Prime 4’s launch date was doubtlessly pushed and the way critical Retro was in making Prime 4 a actuality. Although devs have come and gone via the years of 2020 to 2023, Retro and its workers are arduous at work on Metroid Prime 4, backed up with each trade veterans and untested but passionate builders. Nintendo stays tightlipped on Metroid Prime 4’s state of affairs and progress, however little clues right here and there present that the sport may very well be on its means quickly. In 2022, Retro up to date their Twitter (or X) banner with idea artwork of Samus that was model new. There are additionally fewer general Retro job listings, which might point out that the sport presently has all the mandatory expertise it must thrive.    Curiously, the Metroid Prime Trilogy was remastered and launched in early 2023 with out prior fanfare or announcement. In line with a German video games score board and an environmental artist who labored on the remaster at Retro, the remastered trilogy had been achieved for some time, way back to 2021, which means Retro and Nintendo had been sitting on this recreation for some time. Whether or not the remaster launch was to pave the way in which for Prime 4 or one other of Nintendo’s inane enterprise choices, we are able to’t say for certain, but it surely exhibits that Nintendo hasn’t forgotten in regards to the collection that made a reputation for itself within the West. Hopefully 2024 is when Metroid Prime 4 makes its grand return.
2. Hearth Emblem Remakes
Tumblr media
I’m an enormous Hearth Emblem fan. The collection regained its footing again in 2012 with the immense success of Awakening and secured its place as one in all Nintendo’s flagship franchises. That was additionally across the time I got here on board with turn-based technique collection and have by no means gotten off ever since. Although I've been enjoying Hearth Emblem titles for the final 12 years, within the eyes of collection veterans, I'm nonetheless a little bit of a novice. And no, I don’t imply within the sense of HOW I play (Traditional/Arduous for me, thanks very a lot. I’m not THAT a lot of a grimy informal), however WHAT I performed.   Awakening was the thirteenth recreation within the collection, and I’ve performed each subsequent recreation since, together with all of the spinoffs like Warriors and Tokyo Mirage Classes. (Heroes is a mainline recreation by the way in which. Sorry, I don’t make the principles.) I'd like to play all of the earlier titles, however all the pre-3DS video games are locked behind ageing {hardware} that's not accessible via simple means, no less than legally. This lack of accessibility additionally permeates to recreation design as effectively, as sure points of the older titles have aged like milk resembling map design, help mechanics, stock administration, and many others.  These revered, basic video games are held again by limiting {hardware} and design, and a few are even cordoned off by way of the language barrier, just like the famend fourth and fifth video games within the collection.Giving these older video games a contemporary facelift could be a superb method to breathe life into Hearth Emblem’s older catalog and provides a method to attraction to each collection oldtimers and newcomers alike—and Hearth Emblem is not any stranger to remakes. Hearth Emblem 11, 15, and 12 have been remakes of Hearth Emblem 1, 3, and a couple of respectively.  Additionally, if rumors are to be believed, Hearth Emblem developer Clever Programs might doubtlessly be at work on a remake of Hearth Emblem 4. This information got here across the time the leaks for Hearth Emblem Interact surfaced on the web which have been all later confirmed to be true.Clever Programs is presently working to ship a remaster of Paper Mario and the Thousand 12 months Door and I don’t understand how that can have an effect on Hearth Emblem. However I’ll be damned if I can’t no less than dream a bit.
1. New Nintendo Console
Undoubtedly, a brand new Nintendo console is on most individuals’s bingo playing cards for 2024. The Change has been out since 2017 and it isn’t precisely ageing all that gracefully. Efficiency is weak throughout the board and newer video games can hardly make a splash on Nintendo’s {hardware}. Simply have a look at how Mortal Kombat 1 appears on this factor. It’s hideous.
Tumblr media
Followers have been speculating for years at this level for Nintendo’s subsequent huge factor, developing with modern names like “the subsequent Change” or the “Change Professional”. Although wholly uncreative, what Nintendo followers are cooking isn’t solely with out cause. Nintendo is famend for his or her exceptional method to console growth, adopting the “blue ocean” technique. Coined by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne, this methodology mainly means to look at a present given house and set up a marketplace for an expertise and/or product that both is unexplored or no different competitor is presently delivering, therefore the “blue ocean” moniker. The Nintendo Change does precisely that. Although weak in specs, its twin mode of operation makes it an expertise that neither Microsoft nor Sony can rival or match. The Change was so forward of its time it successfully rendered the DS line of handhelds out of date (although handheld consoles have been already hanging on by a thread). What we wish from Nintendo is easy: an improved Change. A console that may maintain the ergonomic design and performance of the Change whereas boasting higher inside {hardware} could be a dream come true.  The Change has had run over the past seven years and an upgraded model being introduced in 2024 will maintain the nice instances rolling for even longer. 2024 is just simply getting began and I can’t wait to see what this yr has in retailer for us. Since this essay is 10.5k words, I've included the first section below the cut and a link to the Substack article.
A special thanks to Ubisoft ANZ for not only supplying an early copy of Mirage for me to review, but for inviting me to the game’s Sydney launch party this past Thursday. I had a brilliant time and adored meeting the amazing content creators, eating the delicious food, getting pushed outside because of fire alarm shenanigans, and having a ridiculously long 1-on-1 chat with Mirage’s narrative director, Sarah Beaulieu. Thanks for flying halfway across the planet to come and visit us!
INTRO
I have been simultaneously dreading and getting cautiously optimistic for this game for months now, but mostly I’ve been going out of my way not to think about it. My thought process was that when October 2023 came about, I wanted to go into Assassin’s Creed Mirage as neutrally as possible, because my relationship with Assassin’s Creed over the past few years has been turbulent to say the least. The first game I was around for the release of was Origins in 2017, for which I was monstrously hyped. Then when Odyssey was revealed at E3 in 2018, I crashed for I immediately hated it, decrying it along with hundreds of others online. When Valhalla came about in 2020, I simply did not care for it in the slightest. Both for Valhalla by itself, and for Assassin’s Creed as a brand.
I had entered my jaded phase, for I had played two games in a row of a thing I had recently fallen out of love with, and it was a bitter thing to experience. On top of that, I had quietly resigned myself, as had many others in my circle of friends, to never getting back the Assassin’s Creed we liked, and instead we would get more games that built entire countries with 60 hour campaigns. For back then, Assassin’s Creed wasn’t the only franchise Ubisoft was transforming. Post-Origins, their philosophy seemed to be to make everything bigger, better, and endless. A Unity within an Odyssey. I decided to cut my losses and squat on my “section” of the franchise that I liked the most, which are the 18th century games, and thought that would be enough to content me and that I would move on and find new obsessions to take the place that had been occupied by Assassin’s Creed.
Tumblr media
Burying my hopes and dreams for Assassin’s Creed in 2020. (Assassin’s Creed III, 2012 (Ubisoft))
Then mid-2020 happened. Ubisoft’s management were hit by claims of rampant bullying and sexual harassment that stretched all the way to the top of the company. Many high profile people were fired, but for this story, the two big names were Valhalla’s game director Ashraf Ismail, and Ubisoft’s CCO Serge Hascoët. If you weren’t around then, know it was a massive event. With Hascoët in particular gone, there came some hope that these changes would not only turf out abusers and change the general company culture for the better (the results have been mixed to say the least), but be felt in the way Ubisoft made its games. But if their games were going to change, then we’d have to wait for a few years as development pipelines had the chance to catch up.
When Mirage was revealed in September 2022, that cynicism Odyssey and Valhalla had left me with still had me in its grip. I watched the cinematic trailer and kind of felt nothing. Later when I had time to reflect on my emotions it felt both freeing and really fucking terrible. I didn’t care about this thing that had had me in some kind of death grip for six and a half years by then. I could watch this promise of a thing dangled before me and be fine in the thought that I had moved on. But that realisation of detachment felt bad. Because this franchise was the one that got me into video games beyond Nintendo party games in the first place. It was the thing that led me to meet wonderful people and open doors to opportunities like the Mentor’s Guild and Star Player programs, and having my work featured in For Honor not once, but twice.
But I didn’t want to think about that either. I put Mirage to the back of my brain and went on with my life. Mirage would come out eventually, and if it looked good, I’d play it.
And that was my headspace until about a week ago when I went to that launch party. Mirage is here, and boy do I have a lot to say about it.
Tumblr media
Basim ibn Is’haq, protagonist of Mirage. He has a nice face :) (Assassin’s Creed Mirage, 2023 (Ubisoft))
As a TL;DR review: Mirage is a solid AC game fans have been clamouring for for years. The gameplay loop is fun and engaging and fully committed to delivering the Assassin fantasy. The story likewise is good, but not great. It has memorable characters in Basim and Roshan and does reach some great dramatic moments, even if I found that its beats didn’t land as fully as they wanted. I highly recommend it for fans of Classic Creed. For New Creed fans/players who are looking for adventures like Odyssey, this game might not be for you as it exchanges country-sized maps for a single, dense urban environment (and whilst the map outside of Baghdad is large, it is mostly empty like Origins’ desert regions), has done away with character dialogue choices and romances, banished the focus on magic and mythology, and leans fully into the stealthy Assassin fantasy rather than the build-based branches of Assassin, Warrior, or Ranger you could spec into as Kassandra or Alexios. However, if you’re after some open world action adventure, historical tourism, and/or look to murder a bunch of pixel people, there’s a good chance you’ll have fun :)
This review has been split into two parts — a non-spoiler review that goes over gameplay and my general feelings on the narrative without going into details, and a longer, spoiler filled review that will be less focused on gameplay mechanics and more on narrative. I have marked where the spoiler section starts in bold and with a large page break. Feel free to come back and read my analysis on the spoiler sections once you have finished the game, as I have loads to say about it.

Bro I saw a post on Twitter where they said that Pyra and Mythra being in Smash Ultimate was a "waste of slot" and it made me go ughhhhhh
Like come on just let it go they were revealed two years ago at 2021 and it's already 2023, just move on and accept that reality LOL And besides, before Smash Ultimate was even revealed at E3 2018, weren't there a lot of people who wanted the both of them (As well as Rex!) to be in the game? 🙃
Sorry for the rant LOL I just sometimes wonder why a lot of people take the funny crossover fighting game so seriously. Like it's just Smash Bros., relax!
P.S. The fact that Pyra and Mythra were first revealed in a Nintendo Direct in February 2021 makes me feel so old like time is so fast, dang.

Spellcaster university switch
Tumblr media
Spellcaster university switch series#
There’s a level of polish that coats the entire game, including the hub world (a nice addition to what a typical ‘Party Plaza’ has looked like in previous games. While the overall premise of Super Mario Party is cutesy (aside from the truly friendship-ending minigames), the menus this time around are slick and more ‘grownup-like’ than before. The Menus, Hub World And Finishing Touches This seamless integration is something we didn’t realize we’ve wanted since the beginning. On the surface, it is set up like past entries, but rather than hitting a button to enter ‘Practice Mode’ and hoping you remember the instructions, the practice is built right in. The Minigame Instructions And Practice Mode Are AmazingĪs a complete surprise, one of the standouts from our short dive into Super Mario Party was the minigame instructions hub. Whether its in the small details strewn through the different boards or the water droplets after cascading down white water rapids in the new River Survival Mode, it shows that this game wasn’t an afterthought for the Big N. This should come as no surprise, but Super Mario Party is truly beautiful. Check out games like Undeads vs Humans, Dwarven Skykeep, Autumn Leaves, Potion Tycoon, Fantasy Town Regional Manager, Drinks Company Tycoon. Is there any new about this I'm interested into purchasing this game on gog as soon as it supports a controller 5. Nintendo Switch taken by author via Super Mario Party Our dev is working on switch version, so we should have this option one day. Here are three reasons to stay hyped and pick up your copy of Super Mario Party: 1. With promises of back-to-the-basics board game modes to newer, inventive ways to play (here’s lookin’ at you, Toad’s Rec Room), did Super Mario Party live up to the hype? Nintendo Switch taken by author via Super Mario Party Spellcaster University is now available on Steam for your regional. As a fan of at least some of these genres, I tried my hands on what is being referred to as a Hogwarts simulator.
Spellcaster university switch series#
The last two entries into the series were the worst of the bunch, and Mario’s board-game-meets-game-show franchise needed a reboot. Now fully launched, Spellcaster University defies simple genre classifications, being a mix of a deck-based engine builder, a tower builder and a management sim. When Super Mario Party was announced at Nintendo’s E3 2018 Direct, we were ecstatic.
