Is it invalid to worry about your environmental impact as a person who lives on this planet (especially when loads of other people seem to live in ignorant bliss or openly just do not care)?
Not at all.
But as disabled people* I really think we should allow ourselves those accommodations we need/that would make our lives easier.
Bottled body wash lathers easier and saves you that tiny bit of energy while you're washing up? Can't seem take care of your bar of soap so it runs out fast because it's always wet and actively makes your bathroom harder to clean? You deserve to preserve your energy and keep yourself clean. Use it.
Bottled water means your executive dysfunction won't get in the way of you getting hydrated? Means you can keep water by your bed so you don't have to endure the physical pain of walking to the kitchen? Means your OCD symptoms won't prevent you from drinking water for hours-days at a time? You deserve to drink water without stressing. Drink it.
Paper plates and plastic utensils mean you get to eat without having to worry about dishes + prevents you from having an overwhelming sink full of every dish you own covered in rotting, smelly food that may even attract bugs and cause them to breed in your sink? You deserve to eat freely and live in a clean and safe environment. Use them.
Can't wash clothes on the regular let alone cleaning rags due to energy/executive function, ability, finances, ect.? Use paper towels. For whatever reason you need them. Spills so you don't take up your only clean towel and risk it sitting + developing mold and mildew. Wiping off your counters. Dusting. Drying your dishes. Drying your hands. I literally do not give a fuck. Use them!
Use frozen vegetables that come in plastic bags and frozen meals that come in single use plastic and floss sticks and plastic cups and precut fruit and veg and whatever little necessary 'convenience' you can think of that makes your life easier. Just because you Technically, Physically can pull it off doesn't mean you should and it's important we think about the consequences of our actions even if we're the only ones really impacted by them. You're important. And for a lot of us, these things are what makes the difference between Getting Things Done At All and sitting in shame because we can't bring ourselves to make our own everything and do everything the long or right way. We put too much pressure on ourselves to make up for what abled people aren't doing themselves. If Anybody deserves a break it's us.
Don't misconstrue this as discouragement from doing what you can or whatever, but I need all of us to be a lot more realistic about what impacts our lives and which trade offs are worth it for our own sake.
It's unfortunate that we don't have options for more sustainable resources when it comes to taking care of ourselves, but it shouldn't fall on us to choose between a significantly more difficult life or feeling guilt free. Advocate where you can for better treatment of the planet, and until that can happen-- non-disabled people can and should pick up the slack for us. They literally have that option and the impact they face is an infinitesimal inconvenience compared to the real health/quality of life consequences that build up in such a severe way over time. We deserve that little bit of leeway.
*disabled includes both physical and mental ailments on this post btw

Cozy Corner Domaystic--Prompt: 3. Grocery Shopping, 18. Snow Day, 21. Road trip (sort of)
Charred Steak
A Butchlander fic
Tumblr media
Sypnopsis: Butcher is in charge of taking care of Homelander.
Tags: Fluff?, non-canon anything, partially-depowered Homelander, depressive, one-shot, not proof read i die like this.
word count: 1.5k words
This is the forth time he’s heard this song on the radio, one can only tolerate the same country cover before been driven insane but is better than nothing, their car only had an old stereo and he rather not drive in silence with this company, they’ve arrived to their cabin and found it more than just barren, ordered to stay out of sight and hidden until further notice so it was just functional not comfortable but at least it'll do, the snow was piling up and the sun had begun to set-- all Butcher wanted was anything in his stomach and a drink to warm him up, then worry about tomorrow and the road.
Leaving the cargo behind he headed to the nearest town over an hour away, in normal circumstance he wouldn’t dare leave this guy alone but now he can’t go anywhere, he’s bound to the ground like any other sad sod in the world should-- or at least for the most part, but he’s not complaining he himself doesn’t want to do anything, he’s rotting away on his passenger seat or the floor, the most he’s spoken this whole drive to the middle of nowhere America had been to complain about the amount of ads on the radio then over this song.
But Butcher pays him no mind.
This drive is short compared to the last few days, the song just an annoying reminder.
The supermarket is a little small, but he can at least take a breather in aisle dillydalling as he reads the ingredients and cooking instructions, he was no gourmand much less Gordon Ramsey so he would eat anything.
Homelander much the same--he had no taste for food not eating much either, losing weight to a worrisome degree even his bosses had ordered him to feed him, so he stuffed the trolley with a decent variety of things in hopes he liked something, he ignored the ringing on his phones, too exhausted to deal with the rest of the boys after such a long drive, just wanting to get back and eat.
He picks two packs of steaks seeing which was the best deal, he should buy the cheapest chuck knowing Homelander doesn’t deserve anything but dollar store steak but he puts the T-Bone on the trolley nevertheless, he can’t really brush away the image of Homelander’s distraught, how dead he was, after all these days bound together Homelander feel more like a husk dressed and bleached than his archnemesis.
Reading his shopping list he got he milk, the hot cocoa, enough water for a month, he got the bread, butter, canned chili and beans, too many cans that at some point he’s unsure if they will eat it all, toilet paper, frozen vegs and lots of steak, he shouldn’t be buying candies... Homelander seemed to despise anything with fructose unless its coke.
But he still throws a few in there.
Butcher almost wishes the snow buries his car and leaves him stranded if that meant he can stay away from the blond.
But he makes it to the cabin, he looks up and sees no smoke.
He ran as if his life depended on it, his mind only remembers the Homelander of the past, he’s gone and he’s fucked.
The door slams open and he’s taunting the air with his gun but all there is a mess hovering a dwindling flame, wrapped in a blanket and shivering, his foot sticking out and blue.
“You’ll get hypothermia that way… don’t you know how to keep a fire going?”
Homelander doesn’t reply, his eyes yearn to light up but he’s just there immobile on the ground and if his head hadn’t move just a second prior he would had thought it was a corpse.
Homelander doesn’t move when Butcher fixes the fireplace again, but he will pretend to not have noticed that the man squinted and smiled as the warmth enveloped him, he catchest that odd look in his eyes as he touches him to put that poor foot back inside the quilt.
Butcher does his things, putting things away wishing he would help or talk but all Homelander wants to do is sit by the fire like a cat.
“They said on the radio that the snow storm is only going to get worse… we will be stranded so if you want anything I didn’t get at the shops you better speak up now.”
Homelander says nothing.
“You… whatevah…”
Homelander doesn’t do anything, Butcher can fix their temporary residency for a couple days without protest.
He looks at his watch and realizes that Homelander hasn’t eaten or drank anything for hours, he looks at the man grunting as he forces himself to care for him, picking him up from the ground and finally earning a response from the man, he looks at Butcher wincing at him trying to push him away but while there is strength that doesn’t match those thin arms, he’s still weak.
Dragging him up, the man looks away from him-- he looks more angry than ashamed
“I’m gonna make dinner. Be useful and set the table.”
Homelander stood there as Butcher looks back at him and for some disturbing amount of time Homelander stood frozen, but without making a sound he floats and helps him out, he moves smoothly and quicker than most but not in a manner that seemed natural for him.
“Is that… good enough?” His voice is so dry, it hurts to listen, he nods for putting a table wasn’t rocket science– what are you making?”
Butcher grins surprised to hear the bastard wanting to chit-chat.
“Steak and veggies.” He says bluntly.
“Better than slim jims and whisky…”
He sounds normal for a second which gets Butcher to turn around, he much rather listen to this version of him instead of the corpse tied to him.
“You got milk but no whisky… Did you forget?”
Butcher eyes light up in horror, the snow so thick outside he knows it probably not a good idea to travel anymore not at this hour.
“You did get slim jims…”
“Is better if I stay sober if am s’ppose to be stuck ‘ere with you until I get my next orders.”
Homelander smile is more somber than Butcher wants to witness-- he can tell he's bullshiting him so his hearing isn't all gone, this situation is dire but he still looks at the disheveled blonde with a bit of anxiety, his suit long gone replaced by dark coloured sweats, missing a sock and a beard that's gone from scratchy to scruffy, Homelander has been docile for the most part, Butcher becoming his nurse bathing him, washing his hair, shaving that god awful beard... he’s been comatose for weeks, waking up and being no different than a vegetable, moved from coast to coast away from Vought and their minions, Butcher has gotten uncomfortably familiar with Homelander, so when he acts alive its great but it annoys him.
It was weird for Homelander to talk or move this much these days-- Butcher almost gotten accustomed to the potato sack, he can't tell if Homelander will act out but Butcher has learned some tricks to keep him tame.
He lowers the flame letting the steak sizzle and crisp and the veggies boil without supervision for a moment, as he maneuvers around Homelander to take a pack of Werther’s candy from the pantry, Homelander watchest him closely as he rips the candy open.
“You've been a good boy. Haven't tried to run in a whole week… thought you deserved a treat”
“Twisted ankles hurt so much more than I expected it… simpler to break them… what’s the point of running if it’ll hurt afterwards... don't get me started on sore knees."
“You won’t run anymore, right?” Butcher teases Homelander, pressing the cream coloured candy in-between his fingers lifting it towards Homelander’s mouth– you’ll be a good sweet boy for daddy and stay right where I tell ya to stay, right?”
“Is not like I can leave you.” He looks out the window– is also snowing quite a bit… we both can’t leave each other either way."
“So you’ll be a good boy and behave?"
“yes, daddy” He says mockingly.
Butcher presses the creamy candy on the blond’s lip his tongue stretching and catching those calloused fingers, Butcher knows he shouldn’t get to know him more, he hates the bastard, but as the man suckles on his fingers, remembering bittersweet memories-- Homelander is so sensitive to the pain, so sensitive to everything else too... he'll do anything not to feel pain but something else.
It was wrong, it was sick but Butcher found it cathartic, more cathartic than the bruise on Homelander’s neck... now a sweet shade of olive, his mouth watered at the thought of being trapped together.
Homelander smiled crushing the candy as Butcher’s fingers escape those sharp toothers, still sharp enough to rip bone clean, he knows well... he got the stiches to remind him.
“I don’t like well-done steak.”
“Youse get what you get.”
“You don’t like well-done either.”
“Fuck.”
The snow piles up, Butcher and Homelander eat in silence, the snow piles up outside, and the two stare at their plates in awkward silence.
Butcher smiles just a tad as the man can only muster a sizzle on the meat.
“See you do like it well-done, luv.”
“Gives it some flavor… you forgot to season it.”
“Butter and salt is enough.”
“Your people colonized the whole world for spices—
“Shut up and eat your steak!”
Homelander smiles, chewing loudly as Butcher wishes he’ll go back to being silent.

Pairing: Jackson Wang x f.reader
Genre: Fluff, Boyfriend!Jackson
WC: 0.5k
Summary: 11.15am (Grocery Shopping)
A/N: Thanks to BuzzFeed Thirst Tweets & Complex Snacked for providing top tier Jackson content hehe. Totally inspired by real events, this is me being accurate af lmao. 🌊🌙⭐️
-----------------------------------------
11.15am (Grocery Shopping)
Dating Jackson meant that you treasured every moment you had together. Owing to his busy schedule, even having him to yourself for an hour felt like a luxury. But often he had chores piled up that needed to be done in that same one hour. And so you'll had made it into a habit to do the most routine things together- from visiting the laundromat to cleaning the house. And he loved doing these domestic things with you, as he was able to shed the skin of being the famous star- Jackson Wang and instead was just Wang Jiaer around you. It meant doing most things together- with puppy Wang following you around everywhere you went. But grocery shopping was the one time you'll split up completely. He turns to the left aisle, you to the right aisle.
Jackson's grocery list
Almond Milk (1 carton)
Pasture raised eggs (2 dozen)
Avocados 3
Zucchini 1
Squash 1
Kale 1
Bell Peppers 3
Broccoli 2
Onions 6
Garlic (more is always better)
Extra lean (90%) beef 1
Salmon 1
Y/N's grocery list
Ramen (nongshim spicy red)
Whole Wheat Bread
Penne Pasta
Parmesan Cheese
Potatoes
Onions
Garlic (more is always better)
Tomatoes
Mushrooms
Chillies
Coke
Clearly, one could see how your food choices could be simply described as veg-junk-spicy and his as non veg-organic-bland. You'll were poles apart, in your palates and had made your peace with the fact. With you, wearing a mask everytime he cooked something that gave off a pungent smell while he rolled his eyes & refused to kiss you when you'd just eaten something spicy that led to your skin feeling on fire.
But before you made it to the cash counter, you smiled at the oppositely laid out carts as you noticed some things in his cart that belonged to you & vice versa. Snacks & desserts held the key to both your hearts. In his cart were your all time favourites- choco pie, lindt & nutella. And you'd curated a list of his childhood treats from China such as rabbit milk candy, shanzha & sunflower seeds.
You knew each other's preferences perfectly & had managed to rub off the taste on the other as well. You could tell in the way he smiled, a grin stretching from ear to ear that he was pleased with your decisions & you chuckled fondly, seeing that he had managed to remember your cravings.
"You do realize we've both picked the cereal and ice cream?" You giggled & said.
"Never too much of those, am I right?" He replied as he shrugged & walked forward to pay the bill as you shook your head & followed him, interlinking your hand into his as he squeezed your hand tight. And while he made small talk with the cashier, you captured a mental snapshot of this perfect little outing, for this was just as joyful and memorable as any other grand date you'd been on. Life with your boyfriend was truly "La Dolce Vita"- a sweet boy, with a sweet tooth & a shopping bag filled with sweets.
"Why so impatient, princess?" He asked as he noticed you tapping your feet & nudging him with your elboe to rush things along. So you smirked & whispered softly in his ear, "I'm just eager to go home & eat some ice cream. Preferably off your abs, like that genius Ahgase suggested in the BuzzFeed thirst tweets video."
"Should've known it was you!! Why go to such great lengths when you could've just asked babe." He crooned back, his gaze so sultrily that you were worried he'd devour you right then & there. And you stood there frozen, as red as the Hawthorne berries in your hand. Waiting & bidding the time, till you finally got home.
Jackson & Y/N's grocery list
Big white rabbit creamy candy
Roasted sunflower seeds (spiced flavor)
Shanzha (dried hawthorne berries)
Lotte Choco Pie
Nutella
Lindt Liquor Chocolates
BR Bavarian Chocolate Ice Cream
Kellogg's Frosted Flakes
THE END. 🌊🌙⭐️

meal plan text asmr
i normally have breakfast at work because of my proton pump inhibitor. tomorrow i wfh the morning to do a training so i’ll be having sesame toast with a boiled egg, feta, and whatever pickle and veg looks good. then for the rest of the week’s breakfasts i have one yogurt (lucas found me the icelandic coffee yogurt!!) and friday morning tbh, probably the last of my ezekiel toast with communal work peanut butter unless i pick up cottage cheese/yogurt. today i worked remotely at a coffee shop and i grabbed a bad scone, RIP. (adding to shopping list: ezekiel bread, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, bananas, the icelandic coffee yogurt but that’s only at whole foods.)
at work right now i’ve been having paramount (local brand) k cups that corey gifted me. i got him a gift card for the new downtown coffee shop so he can grab it between his bus job (he herds teenagers for the school public bus program. his real title is abussador :)) and he got me k cups for my work. i froth half and half to dress up the k cup, and my coworker brought in half and half she needs used up, so i don’t need to bring mine. (another week before i have to buy more.) i hate using the disposables and am considering literally committing to work french press like an absolute psycho—i just can’t get myself enough time before work to make and bring it from home and the refillable k cups will do but are gross. if you have to survive a keurig at work i recommend nasty refillables + steaming and frothing milk. i have half a bag of not great beans at home. I’ve been spending more on nicer beans for home and it has been worth it, but I am still not quite sure what I like. (on shopping list: coffee beans, decaf beans for winter evening treats.)
came home with a coffee shop noise pollution migraine and made myself cheese ramen with cilantro, sesame seeds, green onion, and a side of this week’s pickled carrot slaw. ramen made two servings for me. it was the last of my shin black and third to last slice of ramen cheese. my cilantro will last another weekend and i have at least week’s worth of parsley and green onions. (adding to the shopping list: shin black, cheese singles, frozen corn, and since i’m thinking about it, shredded mozz for buldak/corn cheese.)
for lunches wednesday-friday i will have dumplings from the freezer (the ones i made and some other ones i have), leftover ramen, and a carrot and cucumber salad (my last two fresh salad vegetables, but i will probably wait out purchasing more). to prep tonight: jar of dumpling sauce, salad. (dumplings are already on my shopping list when i see some that look good. adding dumpling wrappers—making and freezing them was so worth it, but i felt like making the dough wasn’t.)
complicating factor: i should make myself something sweet to keep me out of the vending machines at work. at home i’ve been having what i believe to be yaourti me meli (greek yogurt, walnuts, honey, cinnamon?) but i’m out. i’d like to make a second french yogurt cake to compare it to the other recipe, but again, out. i would also also like to make a coffee cake type food for someone coming over saturday afternoon. do i make a little loaf cake with what i have tonight to get me through the week and then a second thing then? do i have friday plans? if i bake a little quick bread or pound cake for myself tonight it will really cut down on my food ruminations. (adding to shopping list: greek yogurt, walnuts, honey, dried fruit, butter.. baking supplies need inventorying but i’m almost sure i have enough of the basics.)
what am i having for dinners? i need to minimize the chance that i spend any non-grocery money before next week—i will be having a crazy week and likely blowing money i don’t have. tonight i’m having leftover cannellini beans cacio e pepe (‼️ make this ‼️). i have enough beans (although running low) to continue having beans meals, but i really really really desire to put my beans meals on potatoes. (‼️ fusion jacket potatoes ‼️ make this ‼️). matias made these perfect black beans with pork and salsa verde and it’s all i can think about. can i pull this off with freezer bacon… i have enough of a serrano to get me through. (adding to shopping list: russet potatoes, garlic, sour cream, avocado, cheap canned black beans, decent looking dried black beans, slightly nice italian brand butter beans and cannellini beans, bell pepper, tomatillos, tomatoes, mexican oregano, sweet potato, pork?? i will put this on my list but never buy it.)
i would also like to make salmon rice bowls with avocado, pickled veg/carrot slaw, cucumbers, etc. to use up my freezer salmon. i would prefer to wait to do this til i’m keeping salad greens (leftover salmon for salads is key for a working woman…)
in two weeks i will make something for a certain someone’s birthday and batch up some granola. i’ve been wanting to try making coffee granola. i also have to make a lasagna before the end of winter this year or i must be executed.
what i’m bringing to work tomorrow for the rest of the week: salad, bags of dumplings, ramen, cilantro (packed separately), one boiled egg, one yogurt, dumpling sauce and any other condiments that look good, and a sweet if i can pull it off.
the question i can only answer for myself tomorrow at 4pm: am i going to the grocery store?

Depression meals: can they be good and comforting?
So, this is going to be a bit of a long post and I hope this is helpful to someone.
We know that sometimes we really don't have the energy to go and actually make a proper meal, but regardless we are all worthy of love and of a comforting meal. We are after all battling against a relentless enemy and especially because of this we should be properly nourished.
I am not going to waste time with useless tips, but I am going to delve immediately into the details.
First of all I would say to invest in a good freezer. A lot of shops have pre-made frozen meals that you can store and chuck in the microwave whenever you feel hungry. Not only that, if/when you have enough spoons you can prepare stuff and store it in containers.
I currently have stuff like:
Soup
Pasta
Frozen vegs (the ADHD tax 😓)
Chicken nuggets
Fish fingers
Frozen gyoza (I love them to bits)
Fries/chips
It's ok if you don't prepare from scratch, sometimes we are all very low on spoons/energy and really. Never feel guilty about not doing it from scratch, it's ok. Food is food and if this is what makes you eat there is nothing wrong.
If you have a little bit of money on the side I would invest on an air fryer, really, best gift ever from my MIL, it cooks pretty much anything and consumes less time and energy than an oven, although if you are steaming veggies pouches pls use the microwave, the air fryer makes them a little too dry for my taste.
Anyway, now that I have made this little premise, this is a non-comprehensive list of comforting depression meals that I have made.
SOUP
Grab a bag of instant soup, put its content in a bowl, pour boiling water on it, stir well and add a slice of bread. It literally takes 3 minutes top.
GYOZA NOODLES
You will need frozen gyoza and instant noodles. Prepare the noodles as per package (usually pour some boiling water on them and let them stand for 5 mins. Prepare the gyoza as per package (put them in a bowl, pour cold water over them and microwave for 3-4 mins). Pour the gyoza and the water in the noodles.
TUNA SALADS
No need to prepare much here, they come already prepared with tuna, pasta and veggies. They can be found fairly everywhere, below an example
Tumblr media
CHICKEN NUGGETS
Take a frozen package of nuggets, chuck them in the air fryer (or the oven), let them cook and then enjoy. If you want to add some veggies just microwave one of the steam bags, add some salt and you are good to go.
FISH FINGERS
Same preparation as the nuggets.
***
I will add more as I recall them, but hope you have something a bit more comforting and hope this could help you.

Recipes for Dove (and others, too)
Tumblr media
This is a small selection of recipes that I put together for @dove-da-birb. They are some of the recipes that I and my family use, mainly vegetarian, but also with a few non-vegetarian options. I tend to adapt these a bit when I make them, usually adding more of the seasonings and aromatics, but the recipes are a good basis to build off of.
The recipes are from The Ultimate Vegetarian Cookbook, The Paleo Diabetes Diet Solution, and a couple websites (which I've linked).
Recipe Websites I Often Use
The 1940s Experiment - A website containing a variety of recipes from 1940s Wartime Britain. They can be a little hit-or-miss, but I linked a few of my favourites below. They're definitely rather British in nature, so may or may not appeal. Many of the recipes are wither vegetarian, or have a vegetarian option.
Just One Cookbook - A HUGE collection of Japanese recipes, from mains, to sides, to desserts, to a whole lot of other dishes. There are a lot of recipes that I've enjoyed from here!
Sides and Starches
Tattie Scones (Tippitiwychett) - I LOVE this recipe. It's just a really good starch to have with a meal!
Mock Black Pudding (The 1940s Experiement) - One of the many "mock" foods of the era, this is a fried, seasoned oat patty. It's nice with either veggies and a protein for dinner, or with eggs and tomatoes for a savoury breakfast.
Lemon Garlic Pasta (Pinch and Swirl) - Just a nice, simple pasta recipe. I generally add some spinach towards the end of the cooking process to wilt a little, and it's also really tasty if made (significantly) spicier. Roasting the garlic beforehand also adds another layer of richness to the dish, but it's not necessary.
Mains (Vegetarian)
Mushroom risotto (Recipe Tin Eats) - I posted about this the other day, but it's a really rather nice recipe if you enjoy risotto and/or mushrooms :)
Mock Goose (the 1940s Experiment) - Not goose, but a baked lentil dish! It's surprisingly nice, especially topped with cheese in the last few minutes of baking.
Mock Crab (The 1940s Experiment) - Again, not crab, but a cheesy scrambled egg dish. It's nice on toast as a quick lunch, with some fresh veg as a side. I would definitely recommend using less margarine/butter, as it can get a bit too oily otherwise.
Masoor Dahl (Choosing Chia) - This is an alright basis for this recipe, but I usually add about double the amount of seasoning (if not more). It's a quick recipe, though, so it's nice in that way.
Tofu Katsu Curry (Okonomi Kitchen) - I'm a HUGE fan of curries, especially Japanese curries. This recipe, with breaded tofu cutlets, is a nice recipe, and I often use it. I usually just make triangles, rather than the "cutlet" shape suggested on the website, and I also make "family style" curry (as in this recipe). (Also, Okonomi Kitchen is another website with a lot of good vegetarian/vegan dishes!)
Curried Squash Soup - I don't remember what this exact recipe is like, but you can alter the seasoning to suit your tastes ^w^ (Using frozen, cubed squash is a really good option here!)
Tumblr media
Vegetarian Bolognese - You can use canned beans instead of dried, and though they won't have the bay leaf flavouring, it's a quicker way to make this sauce. I'd also recommend adding some heat, either with pepper flakes, fresh hot peppers, or canned chipotles.
Tumblr media
Roasted Ratatouille - You can of course just use normal diced tomatoes for this. It won't have the same smokiness, but it's still just as good!
Tumblr media
Mains (non-Vegetarian)
Greek-Style Turkey Burgers - My family makes these into meatballs, usually. They also need more seasoning than is called for in the recipe, by quite a bit. (Mint is also a nice addition to these!)
Tumblr media
Baked Haddock with Peppers and Tomatoes - This recipe is more me just putting the concept in this collection, of white fish baked in a chunky tomato sauce. It's always just a nice, simple meal to have, especially with some rice or wild rice.

Do you have any tips/suggestions for helping someone transition to vegetarianism? books/zines you like or cooking tools/spices/etc that made it easier to practice? or a cooking technique you think is essential to master? I didn't eat very much meat to begin with, so removing meat hasn't been difficult, but I am trying to reduce my egg/dairy consumption which has been a bit harder.
thank you!
Sorry it has taken me so long to get to this!
My first bit of advice is to not beat yourself up over missteps in your goal. Being absolutist about veganism is boring and annoying.
The first vegan cookbook that was given to me was Vegan Vittles. My cooking has moved way beyond that, but it was simple and pretty good with basic techniques. There might be a better books now, there probably is.
The most important things about vegan cooking is having a well stocked kitchen, which is expensive upfront, but a great value over time if you stop eating out.
Staple tools for me include: tofu press, cast iron skillet, dutch oven, sheet pan, a good knife, parchment paper, and a my 20 year old Food processor.
The trick to making good tasting vegan food is to build flavors, and that takes time. Here's are some useful things that help: miso, soy sauce/tamari/liquid aminos, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, tomato paste, and a variety of veg broths. Some combination of these end up in most things I cook. Oh, and also Vegenaise and regular non sweetened non-dairy yogurt. We use the yogurt like sour cream because vegan sour cream is mostly trash.
Grains, legumes, and nuts are fun and all cultures have unique ways to make then from quinoa, spelt, rice, barley, lentils, chickpeas, beans of all types, lentils. People think beans give you gas, but that's because they don't eat them enough to acclimate the body's microbiom and gut health. The reason a product like Beano works is because it breaks the complex carbohydrates down for you.
Seeds and nuts are great, but kind of expensive. Only buy ones you know you like or will use.
Frozen veggies! We have so many and they are so useful, less waste, and cheaper. We keep frozen broccoli, corn, spinach, peas, and a veggie mix on hand. Toss them in an instant soup on a lazy day, add as a side, there's lots of way to use them.
Techniques: sauteing vegetables, roasting vegetables, pressing tofu (this is why a tofu press is soooo much easier!), a few different tofu marinades, tossing tofu in corn starch and frying to make them crispy, getting to know what vegetable cook faster than others, being able to make a soup with whatever you have in the kitchen, get a couple of sauces or dressing down like a lemon tahini dressing that can go on salads or veggies. Learn what's in seasonal regionally and learn to cook it.
I hope that helps!

This probably isn’t the question for you, but I trust your judgment.
Is there anything more I can do to save money right now, without causing extra damage to the environment? I know that in many cases the cheaper option is the more eco-friendly one (like veganism, cooking from scratch, don’t use heat/electricity unless needed) but I still feel really bad buying food in plastic.
My family is really struggling right now and I know that the plastic bags our frozen vegetables come in, for example, is only minimal compared to the waste caused by large industries but I still feel really bad about it. The alternative is buying unpackaged fresh vegetables but not only would that be too expensive but I’d fear not eating it in time and creating food waste.
After typing that all out I suppose my questions, more accurately are ‘Are there any cheap eco-friendly tips that you have?’ and ‘how does one manage climate anxiety?’.
Thanks
All you can really do the best you're able to in your circumstances. I try to avoid waste as much as I can too but my frozen veg still comes in plastic bags, like yours. You do what you can afford to do, that's really all anyone can ask of you. You're right, its better to avoid food wrapped in plastic but it really is pretty minimal, and if you're not able to avoid it then there is really nothing else to be done.
In terms of tips, we all know that what you buy is more important than anything else, and as a vegan you're already doing more than most. If you can, buying in bulk can reduce packaging, things like composting can reduce food waste, thrifting non-food items of course, good insulation in your home, avoiding driving and flying where you can, using eco-friendly energy suppliers, power saving around the home any way you're able to.
These are all small steps and they do add up, but based on what you've told me it sounds like you'll already be doing most of this. This sort of hyper-responsibility you're feeling is the result of climate anxiety I'd guess, and I'm afraid I don't have much advice on a personal level, but you can find a couple of good articles on this here and here. I hope it helps a little bit.

8 tips for healthy eating
These 8 practical tips cover the basics of healthy eating and can help you make healthier choices.
The key to a healthy diet is to eat the right amount of calories for how active you are so you balance the energy you consume with the energy you use.
If you eat or drink more than your body needs, you'll put on weight because the energy you do not use is stored as fat. If you eat and drink too little, you'll lose weight.
You should also eat a wide range of foods to make sure you're getting a balanced diet and your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs.
It's recommended that men have around 2,500 calories a day (10,500 kilojoules). Women should have around 2,000 calories a day (8,400 kilojoules).
Most adults in the UK are eating more calories than they need and should eat fewer calories.
1. Base your meals on higher fibre starchy carbohydrates
Starchy carbohydrates should make up just over a third of the food you eat. They include potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and cereals.
Choose higher fibre or wholegrain varieties, such as wholewheat pasta, brown rice or potatoes with their skins on.
They contain more fibre than white or refined starchy carbohydrates and can help you feel full for longer.
Try to include at least 1 starchy food with each main meal. Some people think starchy foods are fattening, but gram for gram the carbohydrate they contain provides fewer than half the calories of fat.
2. Eat lots of fruit and veg
t's recommended that you eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and veg every day. They can be fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced.
3. Eat more fish, including a portion of oily fish
Fish is a good source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals.
Aim to eat at least 2 portions of fish a week, including at least 1 portion of oily fish.
Oily fish are high in omega-3 fats, which may help prevent heart disease.
Oily fish include:
salmon
trout
herring
sardines
pilchards
mackerel
Non-oily fish include:
haddock
plaice
coley
cod
tuna
skate
hake
4. Eat less salt: no more than 6g a day for adults
Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke.
Even if you do not add salt to your food, you may still be eating too much.
About three-quarters of the salt you eat is already in the food when you buy it, such as breakfast cereals, soups, breads and sauces.
5. Get active and be a healthy weight
As well as eating healthily, regular exercise may help reduce your risk of getting serious health conditions. It's also important for your overall health and wellbeing.
Being overweight or obese can lead to health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease and stroke. Being underweight could also affect your health.
6. Do not get thirsty
You need to drink plenty of fluids to stop you getting dehydrated. The government recommends drinking 6 to 8 glasses every day. This is in addition to the fluid you get from the food you eat.
All non-alcoholic drinks count, but water, lower fat milk and lower sugar drinks, including tea and coffee, are healthier choices.
Try to avoid sugary soft and fizzy drinks, as they're high in calories. They're also bad for your teeth.
7. Do not skip breakfast
Some people skip breakfast because they think it'll help them lose weight.
But a healthy breakfast high in fibre and low in fat, sugar and salt can form part of a balanced diet, and can help you get the nutrients you need for good health.
A wholegrain lower sugar cereal with semi-skimmed milk and fruit sliced over the top is a tasty and healthier breakfast.

Everything I had in Fortune Deli
Fortune Deli is a petite Café/restaurant located in the mid of Vellore city. It is a part of a star hotel 'Fortune park' which belongs to ITC group of companies. Deli has a limited menu of their in-house chef’s choice.
Here is an account of everything I had in this particular restaurant with their price. (Everything I had are vegetarian so I have no idea about Non veg in there)
Let’s start with the appetiser.
Tumblr media
Chilli cheese fries
It was classic frozen French fries garnished with chilli flakes and grated cheese, it sounds just as how I’ve described. It wasn’t anything special or unique, if you want French fries with mild variation you can go for this or else I wouldn’t recommend (without gst ₹100)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cheesy nachos and Pommes poutine
The cheesy nachos were really good, flavoured nachos with tomato and onion salsa with spice packed baked with cheese was great flavourful treat.
The poutine was disappointing, Poutine is a dish that has to be served with potato fries with loads of gravy on it with fresh cheese garnish where this was barely coated with gravy and didn’t have much to do with the taste. I’d not recommend trying this here.
When I ordered pommes gratin I got served with the same poutine, when asked about it they refused to agree that they both are the same.
Tumblr media
Veg platter
A serving of variety of fries such as cheesy potato shots, potato wedges, tandoori and spring rolls with 3 different condiments to go with the mains. Fried food is always good.
Tumblr media
Paneer satay
Cottage cheese skewers grilled with spices coated and served with peanut butter as side. It tasted good, would recommend.
Tumblr media
Veg biriyani thali combo
Vegetable biriyani served with onion raitha, paneer butter masala and Gulaab jamun for desert. The spices were perfect and each element complimented the other. Budget friendly, good quantity food.
Tumblr media
Chinese combo
Veg fried rice served with mushroom manchurian, sweet and sour chilli sauce, spring rolls and rasgulla for desert. Mild flavours and great portion size.
Tumblr media
Cold coffee
Classic cold coffee, mediocre portion size but tasted good.
Now for the prices of all the dishes listed above (without gst):
Chilli cheese fries - ₹100
Pommes poutine/gratin - ₹100
Paneer satay - ₹140
Veg platter - ₹180
Veg biriyani combo - ₹145
Chinese veg combo - ₹120
Cold coffee - ₹130
Why should you go to Fortune deli?
They have a good ambience in there, warm welcoming waiters. Good portion of food within budget. Limited menu.
Reasons to not go :
If you want any food out of the top list, the portion is small and the price is high especially for chaat. Food takes about 40mins to be served from the time you order. Not much variations of food.

Made a sweet n sour curry variation— it was meant to be a pineapple chicken, but I had a few missing ingredients (namely uh the chicken) and so I played around with it a bit.
No chicken to coat and cook, so instead I threw in boiled potatoes and sweet potato. I'm really becoming the boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew potion concocter, eh! But I'm moving next week, so this was less of a 'let's go get ingredients!' thing, and more of a chance to use up what's in the fridge so I have to carry and move less stuff.
So we made the sauce as is:
Base:
Sauté chopped onions: heat them in oil on low heat until they're a bit soft
Add spices to it: garlic powder, whatever else your heart fancies in small doses: I used some cinnamon powder and some cayenne. Your salts and peppers.
The sweet n sour bit of the sauce:
Pineapple juice (loads), brown (or w/e) sugar, vinegar, soy sauce (all in equal quantities) and some flour (about half of the sugar, etc.). Technically, the recipe called for cornflour, but if you give it a good five minutes to cook properly, flour is okay.
I also used some of the sweet potato boiling water because it's also kinda sweet and I didn't have as much pineapple. Chicken broth would also do, but like I said. No chicken in my fridge rn.
Keep whisking as you add each bit in so you get an actual sauce without lumps of flour/sugar or stuff settling in layers.
Pro tip: if the flour is the last thing you add, you can taste the proportions as you add stuff. Too sweet? Add more soy. Too much vinegar? More of everything, sorry, you're fucked
Cooking:
Into the base of sautéd onions, add the boiled (and cut, because I'm not a heathen) vegetables: for me it was potatoes and sweet potatoes, but I also had some frozen veg so that went in. Bell peppers n stuff is lovely with this. My pot's (potatoes; this did not look like I thought it would in my head) were soft enough from boiling so honestly I sort of ended up just coating them.
Then add in the sauce, keep stirring, add more broth of choice if you like. If you've got too much pineapple sweetness, then actually do add non-sweet broth. How much is really you vibing it and sizing up your onions: the minute you've got too much water and not enough onion, you will taste the water; the unfortunate truth of cooking is that water is cool, but water is not food. If you want more quantity of food, you uh, need more quantity of food (this was for me, I am bad at proportions).
If you'd like a thicker, more jam-like texture, then firstly the stickiness of pineapple juice from a pineapple helps with that (I got one of those pre-cut ones from the grocer's, they tend to release juice over time). Secondly, go for less liquid, but also remember to account for the fact that some will evaporate because you're cooking.
Sorry if you're smarter than this; if you check the premises of this blog (pinned post) this is basically cooking for dummies. For idiots. For vengeful, low-skilled bastards that want to make something so good, it makes everyone in their life who has doubted their cooking re-think their whole life so far. Such idiots are often so focused on the revenge part of this dish that we forget little details. Like. Water boils when you heat it and then there's less water.
I ended up also adding a finishing sweet and sour (possibly Thai; I can't remember bc it is 2 am) sauce I was enticed to buy at the grocer's even though it was 10 days before I move house. How we all fall. So anyway, I must use the sauce, and in lieu of just coating cooked chicken/shrimp/other meat or veg, I just kinda threw it into the sauce.
Again, this is all optional because it's cupboard-emptying stuff, but I threw in some flax seeds on top, and honestly, when serving, I have also enjoyed it with a dollop of mayonnaise and a small cut of a cheddar cheese slice, but I don't really think using mayo in everyday cooking is a great idea? But also, I had soft-boiled eggs, which also did a fantastic and really fancy-looking job of drizzling into the stew at the very end ('plating', if I may be so bold (<- sucks at plating)). That's vengeful cooking, baby!
And of course, me being me, I finished it with rice. My whole existence is stews for rices. I bought a 3 kg pack of rice because it was 1) long grain (my mum nods in approval) and on discount. But. 10 DAYS BEFORE I MOVE. So yeah, rice bonanza. I am having so much rice. Living a real regal life out here.
And that's the dish! Revenge may be best served cold but please for the love of god have this while it's still hot and mmm so yummy.
Pics tomorrow maybe (though it'll be of a reheat) because it was mmm so yummy that I never took a picture.
(Quick rice tip: water : rice 2:1, + maybe a quarter glass of water extra to keep it from burning if anything fucks up, 18 mins on the timer, start at high heat, when you hear the boiling, turn it down to medium (that's like a 5 on a numbered stove, think 6 o'clock) and then just taste and monitor when you've got around 4 mins left. People say rice is hard, please, rice loves you and it's very easy give it a chance.)
Update:
Tumblr media
With some sesame sprinkled because why not. Extra flavour. Lovely eh?
