If the Wonderful PreCure Cures don't shapeshift into dogs, we'll at least have Shasha & Milo as a viable alternative.
Oh, and they got an english version, too!

I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits

Sashiko Jacket
1850-1899 (Meiji Era)
Japan
Sashiko is a quilting technique that uses a running stitch to reinforce and prolong the life of a textile or to join together recycled pieces of cloth into a new garment. Japanese farmers used the technique to create warmer and more durable fabrics, and decorative sashiko stitching developed from this practical function. This robe’s embroidered design is dominated by three variations on the pattern of interlocking circles, called shippō-tsunagi. The bottom band features a design of waves.

i’d like to read about non-white aro experiences (as well as experiences of aro people from outside the US and UK). i don’t think there are enough explicitly non-white conversations about aromanticism. i remember seeing a demographic poll a long time ago, with a majority of aromantic tumblr identifying as white, but non-white aros exist!
i want to hear from people who can’t/won’t come out because of cultural expectations or language barriers. people who use different words to describe their aromanticism. people who experience isolation from the aro community because they aren’t white (enough). i want to hear about aromanticism from new angles!
of course, no one is ever obligated to reveal their ethnicity or race online. but if anyone has seen writing on diverse aro experiences or if they want to share their own experiences, i’d like to read about other perspectives! (pls send stuff my way)

“glorification of an imagined unified Western Traditional Culture as the single objective best culture is a fascist red flag” and “a lot of modern vernacular architecture is boring, actively harmful to the mental health of people who live around it, destroying older buildings that had more personality, and shoddily built + as bland as possible for the ever profit-focused needs of capitalism” are concepts that can coexist
like. yes, be wary of Roman Statue Profile Pics decrying “modernity” on Twitter, but the idea that IKEAfying the world is somehow Progressive and if you don’t like it you MUST be far-right is just. bizarre

kickstarter
As told/shared by mutual @princess-unipeg, there's an upcoming Roller Derby-themed Magical Girl series entitled Wheels & Roses, by Pearl Low and Orange Blossom Studios on Kickstarter. So far, it looks promising and the team is quite stacked!
Even if you don't have money to support it, just spreading the word about the project will be enough!

At first I thought this might be an early April Fool's Day prank but...the Japanese Imperial Family are finally joining social media!
Tumblr media
The Imperial Household Agency, the organization that controls the imperial family, have been debating joining social media for years and I didn't think it would ever actually happen. They have announced that their Instagram account will become active on April 1st, hence the April Fool's Day prank thing. For the time being, this will be their only social media but they are also considering Twitter and Facebook.
My excitement dimmed a little when I read that the account will only post about Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. The extended family's events are so rarely covered and this would have been a great way to stay up to date about them. The IHA says that they are also considering expanding the scope of the family that is featured so I hope that changes sooner rather than later.
Sorry about the non tiara post but I was so surprised I had to share. As always if you are interested in the JIF, I recommend following @ImperialJPNfan on Twitter. There are also rumors that the state visit from Japan to the United Kingdom that was postponed due to the pandemic will finally take place in June so everyone cross your fingers!

From @anthyvarietyhour: "When Nicktoons was airing Yugioh Zexal and other anime (Danball Senki, Digimon, etc), they had a page on their website where they wrote character bios, had games, and chatrooms. These pages are obviously gone, and from captures I could find on the Internet Archive, the games and chatrooms don't appear to be functional anymore.
However, what IS available are the character bios! I'm unsure if there are any for Zexal II, these are just what I found while looking.
Something funny to note is that Nicktoons must have really liked Zexal/really wanted to market it, because this has more profiles than any of the other series. Lines up with how often I remember seeing ads for it."
Thank you very much for the submission and trivia!

Fireman's Coat
Late 19th Century to Early 20th Century
Japan
Japanese firemen's coats are reversible. When fighting fires, the coat was worn as shown, together with close-fitting trousers, a hood, and gloves. Saturated with water, these garments gave protection against flames. A bold, legible pattern on the back identified the fireman’s brigade. For festive occasions, the pictorial side faced outward. This coat shows the Toad Spirit offering to teach the robber Jiraya magic, provided he used it only to benefit humanity.

Um…hello! Your art is like a HUGE inspiration to me how you draw everyone is so unique, I love it! So I just wanted to ask what inspired you and your art to what it is today?
(hopefully I explained that correctly ;w;)
oh my gosh, thank you! :D :D :D I've been feeling pretty down about my art lately, so this was a super nice message to wake up to! one of the easiest traps to fall into is forgetting that other people are seeing your art without all the baggage and hangups that your brain has given it, and sometimes...they might actually like it? hmm. 🤔 (seriously though, that really is incredible to hear, thank you! 💕)
inspiration is really really hard to put into words. so I apologize if none of this makes sense! :') a lot of it comes from looking at things I like, trying to break down what it is that I like about them, and smooshing all those pieces together into some kind of amalgamated homunculus. I'll see something that uses a lot of straights vs curves, go "ooh", and then just start throwing those in there until it is fully absorbed into the gelatinous mess that is Developing An Artstyle. or I'll see some pretty soft-style shading, go "ooh", and then decide I'm not meshing with it and try something else. just, like, being open and trying different things and seeing what sticks, I guess!
overall, I would say I was mostly shaped by the Western media landscape of the early 2000s, when anime was becoming more mainstream and starting to show influence on Western cartoons; I think particular works that influenced me were Sailor Moon, Utena, the works of Takahashi Rumiko, Samurai Jack, Batman Beyond, and Bone. (there's also the French movie Princes et Princesses -- which is itself a homage to The Adventures of Prince Achmed -- which...yeah, you can basically take one look at it and see the effect it had on me.) and there are probably a lot of other things that I didn't consciously realize!
on a more philosophical level, one of my teachers once said to me that "the art that you like to look at isn't necessarily the art that you should be doing". which is something I try to hold onto! I had been trying really hard at the time to be, like, a more realistic traditional-style painter, and was getting really frustrated because that kind of art isn't fun for me to do. it wasn't until I gave myself permission to actually try out different things and not lock myself into what I thought was the kind of art I should be doing, that I realized I actually just like drawing little dudes making weird faces at each other! (I definitely still have some hangups about this, but I am getting better at it! ...I hope!)
